Skin photoaging, resulting from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, is a form of exogenous aging that not only impacts the aesthetic aspect of the skin but also exhibits a strong correlation with the onset of skin cancer. Nonetheless, the safety profile of non-natural anti-photoaging medications and the underlying physiological alterations during the process of photoaging remain inadequately elucidated. Consequently, there exists a pressing necessity to devise more secure interventions involving anti-photoaging drugs. Multiple studies have demonstrated the noteworthy significance of marine biomolecules in addressing safety concerns related to anti-photoaging and safeguarding the skin. Notably, bioactive peptides have gained considerable attention in anti-photoaging research due to their capacity to mitigate the physiological alterations associated with photoaging, including oxidative stress; inflammatory response; the abnormal expression of matrix metalloproteinase, hyaluronidase, and elastase; and excessive melanin synthesis. This review provides a systematic description of the research progress on the anti-photoaging and skin protection mechanism of marine bioactive peptides. The focus is on the utilization of marine bioactive peptides as anti-photoaging agents, aiming to offer theoretical references for the development of novel anti-photoaging drugs and methodologies. Additionally, the future prospects of anti-aging drugs are discussed, providing an initial reference for further research in this field.

Although intravenous bevacizumab (IVBEV) is the most promising treatment for cerebral radiation necrosis (CRN), there is no conclusion on the optimal dosage. Our retrospective study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of high-dose with low-dose IVBEV in treating CRN associated with radiotherapy for brain metastases (BMs). This paper describes 75 patients who were diagnosed with CRN secondary to radiotherapy for BMs, treated with low-dose or high-dose IVBEV and followed up for a minimum of 6 months. The clinical data collected for this study include changes in brain MRI, clinical symptoms, and corticosteroid usage before, during, and after IVBEV treatment. At the 3-month mark following administration of IVBEV, a comparison of two groups revealed that the median percentage decreases in CRN volume on T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery and T1-weighted gadolinium contrast-enhanced image (T1CE), as well as the signal ratio reduction on T1CE, were 65.8% versus 64.8% (p = 0.860), 41.2% versus 51.9% (p = 0.396), and 37.4% versus 35.1% (p = 0.271), respectively. Similarly, at 6 months post-IVBEV, the median percentage reductions of the aforementioned parameters were 59.5% versus 62.0% (p = 0.757), 39.1% versus 31.3% (p = 0.851), and 35.4% versus 28.2% (p = 0.083), respectively. Notably, the incidence of grade ≥3 adverse events was higher in the high-dose group (n = 4, 9.8%) than in the low-dose group (n = 0). Among patients with CRN secondary to radiotherapy for BMs, the administration of high-dose IVBEV did not demonstrate superiority over low-dose IVBEV. Moreover, the use of high-dose IVBEV was associated with a higher incidence of grade ≥3 adverse events compared with low-dose IVBEV.

Mounting evidence suggests that high-fat diet (HFD) consumption increases the risk for depression, but the neurophysiological mechanisms involved remain to be elucidated. Here, we demonstrated that HFD feeding of C57BL/6J mice during the adolescent period (from 4 to 8 weeks of age) resulted in increased depression- and anxiety-like behaviors concurrent with changes in neuronal and myelin structure in the hippocampus. Additionally, we showed that hippocampal microglia in HFD-fed mice assumed a hyperactive state concomitant with increased PSD95-positive and myelin basic protein (MBP)-positive inclusions, implicating microglia in hippocampal structural alterations induced by HFD consumption. Along with increased levels of serum free fatty acids (FFAs), abnormal deposition of lipid droplets and increased levels of HIF-1α protein (a transcription factor that has been reported to facilitate cellular lipid accumulation) within hippocampal microglia were observed in HFD-fed mice. The use of minocycline, a pharmacological suppressor of microglial overactivation, effectively attenuated neurobehavioral abnormalities and hippocampal structural alterations but barely altered lipid droplet accumulation in the hippocampal microglia of HFD-fed mice. Coadministration of triacsin C abolished the increases in lipid droplet formation, phagocytic activity, and ROS levels in primary microglia treated with serum from HFD-fed mice. In conclusion, our studies demonstrate that the adverse influence of early-life HFD consumption on behavior and hippocampal structure is attributed at least in part to microglial overactivation that is accompanied by an elevated serum FFA concentration and microglial aberrations represent a potential preventive and therapeutic target for HFD-related emotional disorders.

RESUMEN

A new C22 polyacetylene, erysectol A (1), and seven isoprenylated pterocarpans, phaseollin (2), phaseollidin (3), cristacarpin (4), (3'R)-erythribyssin D/(3'S)-erythribyssin D (5a/5b) and dolichina A/dolichina B (6a/6b) were isolated from the twigs and leaves of Erythrina subumbrans. Their structures were determined based on their NMR spectral data. Except for 2-4, all the other compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time. Erysectol A was the first reported C22 polyacetylene from plants. Polyacetylene was isolated from Erythrina plants for the first time.

Acquired peripheral hearing loss in midlife is considered the primary modifiable risk factor for dementia, while the underlying pathological mechanism remains poorly understood. Excessive noise exposure is the most common cause of acquired peripheral hearing loss in modern society. This study was designed to investigate the impact of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) on cognition, with a focus on the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a brain region that is involved in both auditory and cognitive processes and is highly affected in patients with cognitive impairment. Adult C57BL/6 J mice were randomly assigned to a control group and seven noise groups: 0HPN, 12HPN, 1DPN, 3DPN, 7DPN, 14DPN, and 28DPN, which were exposed to broadband noise at a 123 dB sound pressure level (SPL) for 2 h and sacrificed immediately (0 h), 12 h, or 1, 3, 7, 14, or 28 days post-noise exposure (HPN, DPN), respectively. Hearing assessment, behavioral tests, and neuromorphological studies in the mPFC were performed in control and 28DPN mice. All experimental animals were included in the time-course analysis of serum corticosterone (CORT) levels and mPFC microglial morphology. The results illustrated that noise exposure induced early-onset transient serum CORT elevation and permanent moderate-to-severe hearing loss in mice. 28DPN mice, in which permanent NIHL has been verified, exhibited impaired performance in temporal order object recognition tasks concomitant with reduced structural complexity of mPFC pyramidal neurons. The time-course immunohistochemical analysis in the mPFC revealed significantly higher morphological microglial activation at 14 and 28 DPN, preceded by a remarkably higher amount of microglial engulfed postsynaptic marker PSD95 at 7 DPN. Additionally, lipid accumulation in microglia was observed in 7DPN, 14DPN and 28DPN mice, suggesting a driving role of lipid handling deficits following excessive phagocytosis of synaptic elements in delayed and sustained microglial abnormalities. These findings provide fundamentally novel information concerning mPFC-related cognitive impairment in mice with NIHL and empirical evidence suggesting the involvement of microglial malfunction in the mPFC neurodegenerative consequences of NIHL.

Acquired peripheral hearing loss (APHL) in midlife has been identified as the greatest modifiable risk factor for dementia; however, the pathophysiological neural mechanisms linking APHL with an increased risk of dementia remain to be elucidated. Here, in an adult male mouse model of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), one of the most common forms of APHL, we demonstrated accelerated age-related cognitive decline and hippocampal neurodegeneration during a 6-month follow-up period, accompanied by progressive hippocampal microglial aberrations preceded by immediate-onset transient elevation in serum glucocorticoids and delayed-onset sustained myelin disruption in the hippocampus. Pretreatment with the glucocorticoid receptor antagonist RU486 before stressful noise exposure partially mitigated the early activation of hippocampal microglia, which were present at 7 days post noise exposure (7DPN), but had no impact on later microglial aberrations, hippocampal neurodegeneration, or cognitive decline exhibited at 1 month post noise exposure (1MPN). One month of voluntary wheel exercise following noise exposure barely affected either the hearing threshold shift or hippocampal myelin changes but effectively countered cognitive impairment and the decline in hippocampal neurogenesis in NIHL mice at 1MPN, paralleled by the normalization of microglial morphology, which coincided with a reduction in microglial myelin inclusions and a restoration of microglial hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF1α) expression. Our results indicated that accelerated cognitive deterioration and hippocampal neuroplastic decline following NIHL are most likely driven by the maladaptive response of hippocampal microglia to myelin damage secondary to hearing loss, and we also demonstrated the potential of voluntary physical exercise as a promising and cost-effective strategy to alleviate the detrimental impact of APHL on cognitive function and thus curtail the high and continuously increasing global burden of dementia. Furthermore, the findings of the present study highlight the contribution of myelin debris overload to microglial malfunction and identify the microglial HIF1α-related pathway as an attractive candidate for future comprehensive investigation to obtain a more definitive picture of the underlying mechanisms linking APHL and dementia.

Objective: The present study aimed to explore the predictive value and prognosis of SYNTAX score, nerve growth factor (NGF), trimethylamino oxide (TMAO), silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1), and apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1) for ischemic heart failure (IHF) patients. Methods: From January 2020 to January 2021, 87 patients diagnosed with IHF in the Sixth Hospital of Wuhan, Affiliated Hospital of Jianghan University, and 42 healthy people were included and analyzed retrospectively. The 87 patients were divided into 3 subgroups according to New York Heart Association (NYHA) heart function classification, as group 1 (n=9, classes I-II heart function), group 2 (n = 7, class III heart function), and group 3 (n = 31, class IV heart function). The levels of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), left atrium diameter (LAD), NGF, TMAO, SIRT1, SYNTAX score, and apoA1 were compared among these groups. Results: The SIRT1 and apoA1 of patients with classes I-II, III, and IV heart function were significantly lower than that of healthy people in the control group, while TMAO and NGF were significantly higher than those of healthy people (all P < .05). The SYNTAX score of grade I-II, grade III, and grade IV groups was significantly lower than that of the healthy group (P < .05). The two groups had no significant difference in the number of coronary artery lesions (P > .05). The SIRT1 and apoA1 of patients with classes III and IV heart function were significantly lower than that of patients with classes I -II heart function, while TMAO and NGF were significantly higher than those of class I-II people (all P < .05). The SIRT1 and apoA1 of patients with class IV heart function were significantly lower than those of patients with class III heart function, while TMAO and NGF were significantly higher than those of patients with class III heart function (all P < .05). After 1 year follow-up of these IHF patients, 22 patients were readmission because of cardiac events, and 6 patients died in hospital or during follow-up. These 28 patients were allocated to the event group, while the rest 59 patients were allocated to the events-free group. The SIRT1 and apoA1 level in event group was significantly lower than those of event-free group, while the TMAO, SYNTAX score, and NGF level were significantly higher than those of the event-free group (all P < .001). Baseline characters and heart function with significant differences (LVEF, LAD and LVEDD) among these groups, and NGF, TMAO, SIRT1, SYNTAX score and apoA1 were enrolled into Logistic regression. SYNTAX score, NGF, TMAO, SIRT1 and apoA1 were independent risk factors for the prognosis of IHF patients (all P < .05). Conclusion: SIRT1, apoA1, TMAO and NGF serum levels in patients with IHF are abnormally expressed and closely related to cardiac function. The levels of SYNTAX score, NGF, TMAO, SIRT1, and apoA can effectively predict adverse events in patients with IHF.

BACKGROUND: The overconsumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) has been repeatedly blamed as being a possible contributor to the global prevalence of emotional problems in modern society. Our group recently demonstrated the deleterious effect of a chronic HFD throughout adulthood on both emotional behavior and neuroplasticity markers in mice. As a heightened preference for palatable HFDs from the time of the juvenile period (when the brain is particularly vulnerable to environmental insults) is universal among populations around the world, a comparison of the consequences of chronic HFDs starting from juveniles or adults will assist in obtaining better knowledge of the impact that chronic HFDs have on mental health, thus potentially leading to the discovery of more effective strategies for reducing the incidence of psychiatric disorders. METHODS: In the present study, male C57BL/6J mice with an initial age of 4 weeks (IA-4 W) or 8 weeks (IA-8 W) were separately assigned to two subgroups and fed either a control diet (CD, 10 kJ% from fat) or HFD (60 kJ% from fat) for 9 months followed by an analysis focused on metabolic, emotional behavioral, and neuroplastic profiles. RESULTS: The results illustrated that, in addition to abnormal glucolipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity, mice on a chronic HFD exhibited increased levels of anxiety and depression-like behaviors and aberrant hippocampal neuroplasticity. When compared with IA-8 W mice, several changes indicating systemic metabolic disturbance and neurobehavioral disorder after chronic HFD consumption were aggravated in IA-4 W mice, accompanied by exaggerated impairments in hippocampal insulin sensitivity and neurogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: These results not only provide in vivo evidence that the juvenile stage is a critical period of vulnerability to detrimental effects of HFD consumption on metabolic and neuronal function but also suggest dampened hippocampal insulin signaling as a potential link between prolonged HFD consumption and negative neurobehavioral outcomes. Considering the substantial burden posed by psychiatric disorders and the high prevalence of HFD among youth, these observations are meaningful for raising awareness of the harmful effects of excessive dietary fat intake and developing strategy for preventing mental disorders.

High-fat diet (HFD) consumption is generally associated with an increased risk of cognitive and emotional dysfunctions that constitute a sizeable worldwide health burden with profound social and economic consequences. Middle age is a critical time period that affects one's health later in life; pertinently, the prevalence of HFD consumption is increasing among mature adults. Given the growing health-related economic burden imposed globally by increasing rates of noncommunicable diseases in rapidly aging populations, along with the pervasive but insidious health impairments associated with HFD consumption, it is critically important to understand the effects of long-term HFD consumption on brain function and to gain insights into their potential underlying mechanisms. In the present study, adult male C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned a control diet (CD, 10 kJ% from fat) or an HFD (60 kJ% from fat) for 6 months (6 M) or 9 months (9 M) followed by behavioral tests, serum biochemical analysis, and histological examinations of both the dorsal and ventral regions of the hippocampus. In both the 6 M and 9 M cohorts, mice that consumed an HFD exhibited poorer memory performance in the Morris water maze test (MWM) and greater depression- and anxiety-like behavior during the open field test (OFT), sucrose preference test (SPT) and forced swim test (FST) than control mice. Compared with age-matched mice in the CD group, mice in the HFD group showed abnormal hippocampal neuronal morphology, which was particularly evident in the ventral hippocampus. Hippocampal microglia in mice in the HFD group generally had a more activated phenotype evidenced by a smaller microglial territory area and increased cluster of differentiation 68 (CD68, a marker of phagocytic activity) immunoreactivity, while the microglial density in the dentate gyrus (DG) was decreased, indicating microglial decline. The engulfment of postsynaptic density 95 (PSD95, a general postsynaptic marker) puncta by microglia was increased in the HFD groups. Histological analysis of neutral lipids using a fluorescent probe (BODIPY) revealed that the total neutral lipid content in regions of interests (ROIs) and the lipid load in microglia were increased in the HFD group relative to the age-matched CD group. In summary, our results demonstrated that chronic HFD consumption from young adulthood to middle age induced anxiety- and depression-like behavior as well as memory impairment. The negative influence of chronic HFD consumption on behavioral and hippocampal neuroplasticity appears to be linked to a change in microglial phenotype that is accompanied by a remarkable increase in cellular lipid accumulation. These observations highlighting the potential to target lipid metabolism deficits to reduce the risk of HFD-associated emotional dysfunctions.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is widely recognized as the third endogenous gas signaling molecule and may play a key role in cancer biological processes. ADT-OH (5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3H-1,2-dithiocyclopentene-3-thione) is one of the most widely used organic donors for the slow release of H2S and considered to be a potential anticancer compound. In this study, we investigated the antimetastatic effects of ADT-OH in highly metastatic melanoma cells. A tail-vein-metastasis model was established by injecting B16F10 and A375 cells into the tail veins of mice, whereas a mouse footpad-injection model was established by injecting B16F10 cells into mouse footpads. We showed that administration of ADT-OH significantly inhibited the migration and invasion of melanoma cells in the three different animal models. We further showed that ADT-OH dose-dependently inhibited the migration and invasion of B16F10, B16F1 and A375 melanoma cells as evaluated by wound healing and Transwell assays in vitro. LC-MS/MS and bioinformatics analyses revealed that ADT-OH treatment inhibited the EMT process in B16F10 and A375 cells by reducing the expression of FAK and the downstream response protein Paxillin. Overexpression of FAK reversed the inhibitory effects of ADT-OH on melanoma cell migration. Moreover, after ADT-OH treatment, melanoma cells showed abnormal expression of the H2S-producing enzymes CSE/CBS and the AKT signaling pathways. In addition, ADT-OH significantly suppressed the proliferation of melanoma cells. Collectively, these results demonstrate that ADT-OH inhibits the EMT process in melanoma cells by suppressing the CSE/CBS and FAK signaling pathways, thereby exerting its antimetastatic activity. ADT-OH may be used as an antimetastatic agent in the future.

BACKGROUND: Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), an enteric coronavirus, has become the major causative agent of acute gastroenteritis in piglets since 2010 in China. RESULTS: In the current study, 91 complete spike (S) gene sequences were obtained from PEDV positive samples collected from 17 provinces in China from March 2020 to March 2021. A phylogenetic analysis showed that 92.3% (84 out of 91) of the identified strains belonged to GII subtype, while 7.7% (7 out of 91) were categorized as S-INDEL like strains and grouped within GI-c clade. Based on a recombination analysis, six of S-INDEL like strains were recombinant strains originated from S-INDEL strain FR/001/2014 and virulent strain AJ1102. In addition, PEDV variant strains (CH/GDMM/202012, CH/GXDX/202010 et al) carrying novel insertions (360QGRKS364 and 1278VDVF1281) in the S protein were observed. Furthermore, the deduced amino acid sequences for the S protein showed that multiple amino acid substitutions in the antigenic epitopes in comparison with the vaccine strains. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, these data provide novel molecular evidence on the epidemiology and molecular diversity of PEDV in 2020-2021. This information may help design a strategy for controlling and preventing the prevalence of PEDV variant strains in China.

BACKGROUND: To discussed the risk factor and the management of vitrectomy for long-term endophthalmitis developing after intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in children. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated the clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of long-term endophthalmitis developing after IOL implantation in children. RESULTS: Four eyes of four children were included in the study. The mean time to endophthalmitis development after IOL implantation was 3.0 ± 0.8 years. The corneal or scleral sutures may have been caused the infection. All 4 patients underwent vitrectomy and received intravitreal antibiotics with or without IOL removal. At the last follow-up, the outcomes were satisfactory; the fundus was clear, the retina remained attached, the visual acuity improved, and there were no severe complications. CONCLUSIONS: The use of scleral sutures and the exposure of conceal sutures may induce the onset of long-term endophthalmitis after IOL implantation. Complete vitrectomy and appropriate use of antibiotics are effective in the treatment of long-term endophthalmitis developing after IOL implantation in children.

In recent years, more attention has been paid to the application of cold plasma (CP) in eliminating foodborne pathogenic bacteria. This work investigated CP effects on inactivation kinetics and cell envelopes of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) and Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis). Bacterial suspensions were treated with dielectric barrier discharge atmospheric CP at 75 kV for different treatment time. Three regression models were tested for estimating inactivation kinetics. Reactive species generated in plasma, the appearance and integrity of bacterial cells, the activity and secondary structure of enzymes in the cell envelope, and molecular docking, were measured for evaluating the envelope damages. Results indicated that Log-linear model was suitable for L. monocytogenes and the Weibull model was suitable for S. Enteritidis. S. Enteritidis was more sensitive to short-lived reactive species (such as OH radicals) in plasma than L. monocytogenes, and the cell envelope of S. Enteritidis was more severely damaged (the increased membrane permeability and leakage of intracellular substances) after plasma treatment. Interestingly, compared with S. Enteritidis, the decrease in the activity of enzymes existing in the cell envelope of L. monocytogenes did not contribute significantly to the death of bacteria. Molecular docking further suggested that the decrease in the enzyme activity might be due to the modification of the enzyme, by the interaction between reactive species in plasma (H2O2) and amino acid residues of the enzyme through the hydrogen bond.

In recent years, the wooden breast condition has emerged as a major meat quality defect in the poultry industry worldwide. Broiler pectoralis major muscle with the wooden breast condition is characterized by hardness upon human palpation, which can lead to decrease in meat value or even reduced consumer acceptance. The current method of wooden breast detection involves a visual and/or tactile evaluation. In this paper, we present a sideview imaging system for online detection of chicken breast fillets affected by the wooden breast condition. The system can measure a physical deformation (bending) of an individual chicken-breast fillet through high-speed imaging at about 200 frames per second and custom image processing techniques. The developed image processing algorithm shows the over 95% classification performance in detecting wooden breast fillets.

To study the dynamic changes of nutrient consumption and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) accumulation in peanut kernels with fungal colonization, macro hyperspectral imaging technology combined with microscopic imaging was investigated. First, regression models to predict AFB1 contents from hyperspectral data ranging from 1000 to 2500 nm were developed and the results were compared before and after data normalization with Box-Cox transformation. The results indicated that the second-order derivative with a support vector regression (SVR) model using competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) achieved the best performance, with RC2 = 0.95 and RV2 = 0.93. Second, time-lapse microscopic images and spectroscopic data were captured and analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and synchrotron radiation-Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) microspectroscopy. The time-lapse data revealed the temporal patterns of nutrient loss and aflatoxin accumulation in peanut kernels. The combination of macro and micro imaging technologies proved to be an effective way to detect the interaction mechanism of toxigenic fungus infecting peanuts and to predict the accumulation of AFB1 quantitatively.

Antimicrobial Photodynamic Treatment (aPDT) is a non-thermal sterilization technology, which can inactivate common foodborne pathogens. In the present study, photodynamic inactivation on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) with different concentrations of curcumin and light dose was evaluated and the mechanisms were also investigated. The results showed that curcumin-based aPDT could inactivate S. aureus cells by 6.9 log CFU/mL in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Moreover, the modified Gompertz model presented a good fit at the inactivation data of S. aureus. Photodynamic treatment caused cell membrane damage as revealed by analyzing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Leakage of intracellular constituents further indicated that cell membrane permeability was changed. Flow cytometry with double staining demonstrated that cell membrane integrity and the activity of nonspecific esterase were destroyed. Compared with the control group, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels caused by photodynamic treatment significantly increased. Furthermore, curcumin-based aPDT reduced S. aureus by 5 log CFU/mL in juices. The color of the juices was also tested using a Chromatic meter, and it was found that b* values were the most markedly influenced by photodynamic treatment. Overall, curcumin-based aPDT had strong antibacterial activity against S. aureus. This approach has the potential to remove foodborne pathogens from liquid food.

Egg white protein (EWP) is susceptible to denaturation and coagulation when exposed to high temperatures, adversely affecting its flavour, thereby influencing consumers' decisions. Here, we employ high-voltage cold plasma (HVCP) as a novel nonthermal technique to investigate its influence on the EWP's flavour attributes using E-nose, E-tongue, and headspace gas-chromatography-ion-mobilisation spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) due to their rapidness and high sensitivity in identifying flavour fingerprints in foods. The EWP was investigated at 0, 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300 s of HVCP treatment time. The results revealed that HVCP significantly influences the odour and taste attributes of the EWP across all treatments, with a more significant influence at 60 and 120 s of HVCP treatment. Principal component analyses of the E-nose and E-tongue clearly distinguish the odour and taste sensors' responses. The HS-GC-IMS analysis identified 65 volatile compounds across the treatments. The volatile compounds' concentrations increased as the HVCP treatment time was increased from 0 to 300 s. The significant compounds contributing to EWP characterisation include heptanal, ethylbenzene, ethanol, acetic acid, nonanal, heptacosane, 5-octadecanal, decanal, p-xylene, and octanal. Thus, this study shows that HVCP could be utilised to modify and improve the EWP flavour attributes.

Twelve hitherto unknown tandem prenylated p-hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives, namely, oberoniamyosurusins A-L, together with five known derivatives, were isolated from an EtOH extract of the whole parts of the plant Oberonia myosurus. Compounds 10, 13, and 17 exhibited moderate inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus ATCC29213 with MIC50 values ranging from 7.6 to 23 µg/mL. To determine the biosynthetic pathway of this class of tandem prenyl-substituted compounds, the full-length transcriptome of O. myosurus was sequenced, yielding 19.09 Gb of clean data and 10 949 nonredundant sequences. Two isoforms of p-hydroxybenzoic acid prenyltransferases were annotated and functionally characterized as the enzymes that might be involved in the biosynthesis of nervogenic acid (13) in Pichia pastoris.

Decontamination of meat is commonly practiced to get rid of or decrease the microbial presence on the meat surface. Dielectric barrier discharge cold atmospheric plasma (DBD-CAP) as innovative technology is a food microbial inactivation technique considered in high regard by food scientists and engineers in present times. However, cold atmospheric plasma application is at the experimental stage, due to lack of sufficient information on its mode of action in inactivating microbes, food shelf-life extensibility, whereas, the nutritional value of food is preserved. In this review, we have appraised recent work on DBD-CAP concerning the decontamination treatment of meat products, highlighting the processing value results on the efficacy of the DBD-CAP microbial inactivation technique. Also, the paper will review the configurations, proposed mechanisms, and chemistry of DBD-CAP. Satisfactory microbial inactivation was observed. In terms of DBD-CAP application on sensory evaluation, inferences from reviewed literature showed that DBD has no significant effect on meat color and tenderness, whereas in contrast, TBARS values of fresh and processed meat are affected. DBD seems economically efficient and environmentally sustainable.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effect and prognostic factors of vitrectomy combined with intravitreal antifungal therapy for posttraumatic fungal endophthalmitis in Eastern China. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who developed fungal endophthalmitis after penetrating ocular trauma at an ophthalmic center in Eastern China. All patients underwent vitrectomy and intravitreal injection of antifungal drugs. RESULTS: Thirty-five patients (35 eyes) were included. Twelve eyes suffered plant trauma, 17 eyes metal trauma, and 6 eyes other trauma. The culture results for all 35 eyes showed filamentous fungi, including Aspergillus in 26 eyes (74.3%). Twenty-three eyes underwent vitrectomy once and 12 eyes were treated twice. Four eyes were iridectomized because of a fungal lesion behind the iris. Fungal endophthalmitis was effectively controlled in 33 eyes (94.3%), whereas 2 eyes were ultimately enucleated. Visual acuity was significantly better after treatment than before treatment (P = 0.0006). According to the preoperative vision, the affected eyes were divided into two groups: group 1A (light perception) and group 1B (better than light perception). The final visual acuity in group 1B was significantly better than that in group 1A (P = 0.0289). CONCLUSIONS: Vitrectomy combined with intravitreal antifungal therapy is an effective treatment for posttraumatic fungal endophthalmitis. Preoperative visual acuity is a significant factor affecting the prognosis of visual acuity.
