Demographers have studied the Japanese mortality pattern since Japan became the most longevous population worldwide, half a century ago. Nutrition and lifestyle were considered by epidemiologists, gerontologists and other scientists as the most important reasons explaining the Japanese superiority. In Okinawa, the mortality pattern is even more exceptional, but few demographers have pointed out this exception. Other scientists proposed different explanations - for example some genetic characteristics, less salt and more animal protein in the food, a mild climate, a higher level of activity, a better consideration of the oldest in the population and, globally speaking, a more traditional lifestyle. At the end of the 1980s, lower improvements of mortality among young adults were identified in Okinawa. In 2002, Okinawa fell from the 4th to the 26th place in the ranking of the 47 Japanese prefectures by male life expectancy. This has been considered by the population of Okinawa as a 'shock'. Our in-depth analysis of available life tables and associated mortality rates proves that the population of Okinawa is divided into two groups of generations: those born before World War II and those born after. The older generations clearly experience a highly favourable mortality pattern, whereas the younger generations show mortality levels that are definitively higher compared to mainland Japan. This contribution considers which factors may explain such a situation, including the plausible invalidation of the age of some oldest in the population. We plea for in-depth demographic age validation that will enhance all scientific findings so far and boost the exceptional longevity in Okinawa.

INTRODUCTION: The United Kingdom (UK) and world's population is aging with patients living longer, often with many co-morbidities. It is expected that patients of extreme old age would have poor outcomes following trauma; however, this assumption is not clearly evidenced. This study aims to present the outcomes of patients aged 100 or older admitted to a single hospital trust following admission for orthopaedic trauma. METHOD: A prospective cohort of patients aged 100 years and over admitted to the trauma and orthopaedic departments of two hospitals within the same trust between 2008 and 2022 was reviewed. Age was median 101 years (100-106 years). Outcome measures were length of stay, survival, complications and change in accommodation. RESULTS: 80 patients met the inclusion criteria (71female, 9 male). Mean age at discharge was 102.5 years with survival mean 4.2 years. 2 patients with peri-prosthetic fracture survived a further 5 years. Mean length of stay was 17 days. 57 patients returned to their original place of residence. 72 patients (90 %) survived the acute hospital admission. CONCLUSION: Survival rates for patients aged over 100 years were high and most returned to the previous place of residence. This study supports the surgical management of trauma and helps inform patients and families expectations for mortality risk.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional pilot study evaluated the impact of age on masticatory performance among individuals aged 65 to 106 years, as part of the Heidelberg Dental Centenarian Study (HD-100Z) conducted in South-Western Germany. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 31 centenarians were recruited, alongside 31 individuals each from the age groups 75-99 and 65-74, matched based on sex, prosthetic status, and number of teeth. Masticatory performance was assessed using a two-colored chewing gum test and digital image processing. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to assess the effect of age, sex, number of teeth, type of prosthesis on the masticatory performance. RESULTS: Masticatory performance, as measured by the standard deviation of hue in the chewing gum test, decreased significantly in centenarians compared to individuals aged 75-99 years (-0.112, p = 0.037) and those aged 65-74 years (-0.274, p < 0.001). The effects of sex, number of teeth, and type of prosthesis on masticatory performance were not significant associations (p ≥ 0.135). CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that age may have a significant influence on masticatory performance in the studied age groups, challenging previous notions that aging itself has little impact on masticatory ability. The inclusion of centenarians in the study highlights the need for further investigation into masticatory function in age groups reaching up to 100 years or more. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study contributes to the understanding of how ageing affects oral function, which may guide dental treatment approaches for older individuals, and set the stage for more in-depth investigations in this field in the future.

BACKGROUND: With the rapid increase in population longevity, more clinical attention is being paid to the overall health of long-lived people, especially centenarians. Subjective health, which is the perception of one's health status, predicts both mortality and declining physical function in older adults. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related to subjective health among centenarians and near-centenarians (ages ≥95) living in a rural area of South Korea. METHODS: A total of 101 participants were enrolled from four different regions (Gurye, Gokseong, Sunchang, and Damyang), known as the Longevity Belt in Korea. Variables assessing physical and mental health, including the results of blood tests, were examined. Factors associated with good subjective health were identified with logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Fifty-six participants (59.6%) were subjectively healthy among the centenarians and near-centenarians. Logistic regression analysis revealed that depressive mood was the only factor associated with subjective health and was negatively correlated. The regression model explained 39% of the variance in subjective health. CONCLUSIONS: These findings emphasize the importance of mental health at very advanced ages. Because depressive mood negatively correlates with subjective health, more attention is needed to prevent and manage mood symptoms of people of advanced ages, including centenarians.

OBJECTIVE: This study, based on the China Hainan Centenarians Cohort Study (CHCCS), aims to comprehensively describe the characteristic of daytime, night and total sleep duration, sleep quality and different sleep mode of Hainan centenarians and their associations with activity of daily living (ADL) functions. METHOD: The baseline data of CHCCS was used. ADL function was evaluated the Bathel index, sleep quality was evaluated by Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), sleep status including daytime, night and total sleep duration as well as sleep quality and sleep mode. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to explore the association between sleep status and ADL disability and ADL moderate & severe disability. RESULTS: A total of 994 centenarians were included in this study with the age range 100-116 years old. Compared with the centenarians who sleep 6-9 h at night and < 2 h in the daytime, the adjusted OR between sleep > 9 h at night and sleep ≥ 2 h in the daytime and ADL disability was 2.93 (95% CI: 1.02-8.44), and adjusted OR of ADL moderate & severe disability was 2.75 (95% CI: 1.56-4.83). Compared with centenarians who sleep for 7-9 h and have good sleep quality, centenarians who sleep for > 9 h and have poor sleep quality have an increased risk of ADL moderate & severe disability (OR = 3.72, 95% CI: 1.54-9.00). CONCLUSION: Relation between sleep duration and ADL disability was more significant compared with sleep quality in Hainan centenarians. Poor sleep quality can aggravate the relationship between sleep duration and ADL moderate & severe disability.

BACKGROUND: With rapidly rising life expectancy and ageing populations, interest has grown in the survival patterns and ages at death at the highest ages. In Scandinavia, the accumulation of very old population segments coupled with long-established, high-quality population registers permit meaningful analysis. METHODS: This study is based on individual level data from extinct Norwegian birth cohorts using data obtained from the Norwegian Civil Register System. We assess trends in the ages at death of centenarians in Norway for cohorts born between 1870 and 1904 for evidence of any secular increase using quantile regression. RESULTS: We observed that there is no upward trend in centenarian lifespans, in line with recent observations in Sweden, but contrary to the upward trend at the very highest percentiles as observed in Denmark. CONCLUSIONS: The available evidence suggests that the stagnation in centenarian lifespans may be partly due to the failure to find ways of dealing with neurodegenerative diseases.

BACKGROUND: Centenarians often represent one of the best examples of aging successfully. However, the role of body composition or hydration status assessed with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is poorly explored in this population. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to better understand the use and the role of BIA for evaluating body composition and hydration status in centenarians. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the literature up to the 1st of May, 2022 for published articles providing data on BIA to evaluate body composition parameters or hydration status in centenarians. Data were summarized descriptively because a meta-analysis was not possible due to the scarcity of available studies. RESULTS: Among 2222 articles screened, four were eligible including 291 centenarians (mean age: 100.5 years) who were mainly women (88%). In one study, BIA overestimated fat-free mass and underestimated fat mass when compared to deuterium oxide dilution. Another study carried out in Italy including 14 centenarians found a significant correlation between BIA and fat-free mass evaluated using anthropometric tools. In one study, BIA showed a significant agreement with anthropometric measures of fat mass. In the same sample, sarcopenia and dehydration, evaluated with BIA, had a high prevalence. CONCLUSION: BIA may be used for assessing body composition in centenarians, but research is limited to a few studies suggesting the need of future research in this area.

INTRODUCTION: With increasing age, neuropathological substrates associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) accumulate in brains of cognitively healthy individuals-are they resilient, or resistant to AD-associated neuropathologies? METHODS: In 85 centenarian brains, we correlated NIA (amyloid) stages, Braak (neurofibrillary tangle) stages, and CERAD (neuritic plaque) scores with cognitive performance close to death as determined by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. We assessed centenarian brains against 2131 brains from AD patients, non-AD demented, and non-demented individuals in an age continuum ranging from 16 to 100+ years. RESULTS: With age, brains from non-demented individuals reached the NIA and Braak stages observed in AD patients, while CERAD scores remained lower. In centenarians, NIA stages varied (22.4% were the highest stage 3), Braak stages rarely exceeded stage IV (5.9% were V), and CERAD scores rarely exceeded 2 (4.7% were 3); within these distributions, we observed no correlation with the MMSE (NIA: P = 0.60; Braak: P = 0.08; CERAD: P = 0.16). DISCUSSION: Cognitive health can be maintained despite the accumulation of high levels of AD-related neuropathological substrates. HIGHLIGHTS: Cognitively healthy elderly have AD neuropathology levels similar to AD patients. AD neuropathology loads do not correlate with cognitive performance in centenarians. Some centenarians are resilient to the highest levels of AD neuropathology.

Human genomic analysis and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified genes that are risk factors for early and late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD genes). Although the genetics of aging and longevity have been extensively studied, previous studies have focused on a specific set of genes that have been shown to contribute to or are a risk factor for AD. Thus, the connections among the genes involved in AD, aging, and longevity are not well understood. Here, we identified the genetic interaction networks (referred to as pathways) of aging and longevity within the context of AD by using a gene set enrichment analysis by Reactome that cross-references more than 100 bioinformatic databases to allow interpretation of the biological functions of gene sets through a wide variety of gene networks. We validated the pathways with a threshold of p-value < 1.00 × 10-5 using the databases to extract lists of 356 AD genes, 307 aging-related (AR) genes, and 357 longevity genes. There was a broad range of biological pathways involved in AR and longevity genes shared with AD genes. AR genes identified 261 pathways within the threshold of p < 1.00 × 10-5, of which 26 pathways (10% of AR gene pathways) were further identified by overlapping genes among AD and AR genes. The overlapped pathways included gene expression (p = 4.05 × 10-11) including ApoE, SOD2, TP53, and TGFB1 (p = 2.84 × 10-10); protein metabolism and SUMOylation, including E3 ligases and target proteins (p = 1.08 × 10-7); ERBB4 signal transduction (p = 2.69 × 10-6); the immune system, including IL-3 and IL-13 (p = 3.83 × 10-6); programmed cell death (p = 4.36 × 10-6); and platelet degranulation (p = 8.16 × 10-6), among others. Longevity genes identified 49 pathways within the threshold, of which 12 pathways (24% of longevity gene pathways) were further identified by overlapping genes among AD and longevity genes. They include the immune system, including IL-3 and IL-13 (p = 7.64 × 10-8), plasma lipoprotein assembly, remodeling and clearance (p < 4.02 × 10-6), and the metabolism of fat-soluble vitamins (p = 1.96 × 10-5). Thus, this study provides shared genetic hallmarks of aging, longevity, and AD backed up by statistical significance. We discuss the significant genes involved in these pathways, including TP53, FOXO, SUMOylation, IL4, IL6, APOE, and CEPT, and suggest that mapping the gene network pathways provide a useful basis for further medical research on AD and healthy aging.

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of geriatric hip fractures yields improved functional outcomes with decreased morbidity and mortality. Cohort studies have suggested that the older patients within the geriatric age group have worse outcomes with surgery, However, these studies inherently report inflated risks due to poor handling of confounders and have inadequately age-stratified their geriatric population. AIM: This study aims to investigate the effect of age alone on the 1-year mortality and functional status of geriatric patients after hip fracture surgery. METHODS: This is a retrospective single institution cohort study based on the prospectively-maintained registry of hip fracture patients. 2603 patients aged 60 years and above were treated surgically under a geriatric-orthopaedic hip fracture pathway from January 2014 to December 2018. Patients were split into two age groups: ultra-old (≥ 85 years) vs old (< 85 years). Baseline demographics and the ASA (American Society of Anaesthesiologists) status and the Modified Barthel's Index (MBI) were obtained at admission and 1 year after the fracture. Adverse outcomes from the fracture and surgery were recorded during a follow-up period of minimally 2 years. A 2:1 matching process based on the gender, fracture type, ASA status, CCI and MBI categories was conducted. RESULTS: There were 1009 and 515 patients in the old and ultra-old age groups, respectively. 1-year mortality was similar for both age groups (4.0% ultra-old vs 3.6% old, p = 0.703). 30-day morbidity was similar except for higher rates of postoperative pneumonia in the ultra-old (14.0 vs 6.3%, p < 0.001). MBI scores at 1-year were lower in the ultra-old (severe dependence: 16.4 vs 10.0%; p = 0.001). Ultra-old patients were less likely to be community ambulant at 12 months (21.2 vs 36.0%) with the deterioration in ambulatory status significant after correction for baseline status (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The 1-year mortality of surgically-managed geriatric hip fracture patients older than 85 years of age is not determined by age alone. Patients aged 85 years and above are at higher risk for pneumonia postoperatively. Ultra-old hip fracture patients with an intertrochanteric fracture are more likely to have poorer function at 1 year after hip fracture surgery.

BACKGROUND: As a natural source of support for the elderly, the family is an important channel for achieving a sense of security, happiness, and worthiness in old age. In this study, we analysed the characteristics of intergenerational support in families of centenarians and explored the impact of the number of family generations on intergenerational support. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey between April 2020 and January 2021 among 62 elderly people aged 99+ in Rugao, China, one of six 'longevity cities' in the world. Assisted by the researchers, centenarians completed questionnaires with details pertaining to general demographics, intergenerational support, and other aspects. We used a logistic regression model to analyse the influence of the number of family generations on intergenerational support that the centenarians received with respect to economic, living, and emotional aspects. RESULTS: Centenarians were primarily recipients of care in their families, and received intergenerational support mainly for their declined physical functions and limited self-care ability. The study results revealed that the greater the number of generations comprising the family, the greater was the intergenerational life care and emotional comfort provided for centenarians by the family. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we found a positive effect of the number of family generations on intergenerational support for centenarians. The government and society should promote the tradition of respecting, caring for, and honouring the elderly while paying close attention to the dynamic changes in the family structure of centenarians in promoting high-quality and sustainable development of the people, economy, and society.

According to the United Nations population profile, the number of individuals aged 60 and over in high-income nations is expected to rise from 302 million to over 366 million between 2019 and 2030, so there is an increasing emphasis on nutrition and health in older people. Numerous studies have demonstrated the crucial role that gut microbiota plays in maintaining human health. As a model of healthy aging, centenarians have different gut microbiota from ordinary elderly people. The core microbiome of centenarians in various countries has shown some common characteristics, which are worth further exploration. In this review, the significance of the human gut microbiota to health is briefly discussed, and the characteristics of the gut microbiota of long-lived senior persons of different ages and in different countries are described. Moreover, this review lists dietary interventions and fecal microbiota transplantation. In the end, it discusses the pros and cons of using probiotics to enhance the health of seniors through focused management of the gut microbiota. It aims to pave the way for further investigation into the nexus between gut microbiota, probiotics, and longevity, and then to reveal the underlying mechanism to promote longevity. KEY POINTS: ⢠Gut microbial structure in different age groups and the characteristics of gut microbiota in centenarians. ⢠Dietary interventions, fecal transplants, and probiotics target the modulation of gut microbiota for healthy aging.

INTRODUCTION: Our retrospective study evaluates head CTs performed in our Hospital in the last 11 years (2009-2019) in centenarian patients. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the correlation between reasons for examination and CT findings in emergency and to evaluate if there was the expected involution of the brain by analyzing some non-emergency neuroradiological parameters (NENP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 62 Head CTs performed on patients aged 100 and over were reviewed. They were evaluated emergency CT findings and NENP (leukoencephalopathy, enlargement of the ventricular volume, presence of vascular calcifications). For comparison, NENP were also assessed in two relatively younger populations of 62 patients aged between 65-70 (called "65-70") and 85-90 ("85-90"). RESULTS: In cases of suspected traumatic brain lesions, 11.9% (n = 5/42) of centenarians showed a cerebral bleeding; as concerns suspected stroke we found a higher concordance between clinical suspicion and CT features, 46.6% (n = 7/15). As regards NENP, no significant differences were found with respect to the "85-90" population in terms of severity of leukoencephalopathy, enlargement of the ventricular volume and presence of vascular calcifications. CONCLUSIONS: In emergency, CT plays a pivotal role in defining an immediate diagnosis and from a medico-legal point of view, resulting together with clinical observation the main strategy in the management of centenarians. By the analysis of NENP we may support that centenarians' brains on CT are similar to those of "85-90".

Supercentenarians, people who have reached 110 y of age, are a great model of healthy aging. Their characteristics of delayed onset of age-related diseases and compression of morbidity imply that their immune system remains functional. Here we performed single-cell transcriptome analysis of 61,202 peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), derived from 7 supercentenarians and 5 younger controls. We identified a marked increase of cytotoxic CD4 T cells (CD4 cytotoxic T lymphocytes [CTLs]) as a signature of supercentenarians. Furthermore, single-cell T cell receptor sequencing of 2 supercentenarians revealed that CD4 CTLs had accumulated through massive clonal expansion, with the most frequent clonotypes accounting for 15 to 35% of the entire CD4 T cell population. The CD4 CTLs exhibited substantial heterogeneity in their degree of cytotoxicity as well as a nearly identical transcriptome to that of CD8 CTLs. This indicates that CD4 CTLs utilize the transcriptional program of the CD8 lineage while retaining CD4 expression. Indeed, CD4 CTLs extracted from supercentenarians produced IFN-γ and TNF-α upon ex vivo stimulation. Our study reveals that supercentenarians have unique characteristics in their circulating lymphocytes, which may represent an essential adaptation to achieve exceptional longevity by sustaining immune responses to infections and diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Results from studies investigating life satisfaction, positive affect and happiness of near-centenarians (95+) and centenarians are inconsistent. This is the first systematic review to summarise the extant literature on the subjective well-being of this unique age group. METHOD: Seven electronic databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science and the Cochrane database for systematic reviews) were systematically searched. Subjective well-being was defined as life satisfaction, positive affect and happiness. A narrative synthesis of relevant articles was undertaken. RESULTS: Of 28 studies eligible for inclusion in this review, 20 predominantly examined life satisfaction, 11 positive affect and 4 happiness. Sex and other demographic variables were not significant predictors of subjective well-being. In contrast, greater perceived health was significantly associated with higher levels of life satisfaction and positive affect. Fatigue and visual impairment were significantly correlated with lower levels of life satisfaction and positive affect. However, there was considerable heterogeneity in the findings on physical, cognitive and social associations, mediators and moderators. CONCLUSION: The large discrepancy of results in the literature may be explained by methodological differences between studies. Centenarian research needs a clearer definition of life satisfaction, positive affect and happiness as their operationalisation is inconsistent. An international consortium of centenarian studies could facilitate cross-cultural comparisons on subjective well-being. Future research should be directed towards interventions that promote subjective well-being in the oldest-old.

The current study explored a sub-sample of 57 narrative focused on childhood religious experiences from the Oklahoma Oral History Project. Analyses identified three primary themes connected to childhood religiosity, including transmission, accessibility, and socializing. First, transmission of religiosity during childhood dependent upon a parent or grandparent. A second theme involved accessibility, which highlighted various advantages and disadvantages regarding child and family ability to attend religious services. Such opportunities and barriers were centered upon three subthemes involving rurality, transportation, and infrastructure. Finally, socializing represented a third theme. In particular, church attendance during childhood created unique opportunities for early-life socializing with family, friends, and neighbors. As a whole, key themes indicate that religiosity during childhood may be vital to the early formation of social opportunities and connections that may support positive and adaptive developmental processes in human longevity. Findings have implications relative to advancing conceptual understanding of the impact of childhood religious experience on developmental outcomes among long-lived adults.

OBJECTIVE: The number of older people is estimated to increase from 524 million in 2010 to 1.5 billion in 2050. The factors and models of human longevity and successful aging are questions that have intrigued individuals for thousands of years. For the first time, the current study was designed to investigate the relationships between sex hormones, bone turnover, abdominal obesity, nutritional status and centenarian longevity in the oldest females. METHODS: The China Hainan Centenarian Cohort Study was performed in 18 cities and counties of Hainan Province using standard methodology in 500 centenarian females and 237 oldest females aged between 80 and 99 years. RESULTS: Centenarians were inversely associated with the geriatric nutritional risk index [Exp(B) (95% CI): 0.901 (0.883-0.919)] and abdominal obesity [Exp(B) (95% CI): 0.719 (0.520-0.996)] and positively associated with prolactin [Exp(B) (95% CI): 1.073 (1.044-1.103)], progesterone [Exp(B) (95% CI): 44.182 (22.036-88.584)], estradiol [Exp(B) (95% CI): 1.094 (1.071-1.119)], osteocalcin [Exp(B) (95% CI): 1.041 (1.028-1.054)], ß-crossLaps [Exp(B) (95% CI): 63.141 (24.482-162.848)] and parathyroid [Exp(B) (95% CI): 1.022 (1.013-1.031)] hormone levels (P < 0.05 for all). The geriatric nutritional risk index and abdominal obesity were inversely associated with luteinizing hormone [ß coefficient (95% CI): - 0.001 (- 0.002 to 0.001)]; Exp(B) (95% CI): 0.985 (0.974-0.996)], follicle-stimulating hormone [ß coefficient (95% CI): 0.000 (- 0.001 to 0.000)]; Exp(B) (95% CI): 0.990 (0.985-0.996)], osteocalcin [ß coefficient (95% CI): - 0.001 (- 0.001 to 0.000)]; Exp(B) (95% CI): 0.987(0.977-0.997)] and ß-crossLaps [ß coefficient (95% CI): - 0.100 (- 0.130 to 0.071)]; Exp(B) (95% CI): 0.338 (0.166-0.689)] levels (P < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Centenarian longevity had inverse relationships with nutritional status and abdominal obesity and positive relationships with sex hormones and bone turnover. Nutritional status and abdominal obesity had inverse relationships with sex hormones and bone turnover. Increased sex hormones and bone turnover may be representative of centenarian longevity. Optimizing nutritional status and avoiding abdominal obesity may increase sex hormones and bone turnover and promote centenarian longevity and successful aging.

BACKGROUND: Genetic research on longevity has provided important insights into the mechanism of aging and aging-related diseases. Pinpointing import genetic variants associated with aging could provide insights for aging research. METHODS: We performed a whole-genome sequencing in 19 centenarians to establish the genetic basis of human longevity. RESULTS: Using SKAT analysis, we found 41 significantly correlated genes in centenarians as compared to control genomes. Pathway enrichment analysis of these genes showed that immune-related pathways were enriched, suggesting that immune pathways might be critically involved in aging. HLA typing was next performed based on the whole-genome sequencing data obtained. We discovered that several HLA subtypes were significantly overrepresented. CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicated a new mechanism of longevity, suggesting potential genetic variants for further study.

BACKGROUND: older patients with hip fractures are arbitrarily classified as octogenarians, nonagenarians and centenarians. We have designed this study to quantify in-hospital mortality and complications among each of these groups. We hypothesised that the associations between age and in-hospital mortality and complications are continuously increasing, and that these risks increase rapidly when patients reach a certain age. METHODS: this research is a retrospective cohort study using nationwide database between 2010 and 2018. Patients undergoing hip fracture surgery, and aged 60 or older, were included. The associations between patient age, in-hospital mortality and complications were visualised using the restricted cubic spline models, and were analysed employing multivariable regression models. Then, octogenarians, nonagenarians and centenarians were compared. RESULTS: among a total of 565,950 patients, 48.7% (n = 275,775) were octogenarians, 23.0% (n = 129,937) were nonagenarians and 0.7% (n = 4,093) were centenarians. The models presented three types of association between age, in-hospital mortality and complications: (i) a continuous increase (mortality and respiratory complications); (ii) a mild increase followed by a steep rise (intensive care unit admission, heart failure, renal failure and surgical site hematoma) and (iii) a steep increase followed by a limited change (coronary heart disease, stroke and pulmonary embolisms). CONCLUSION: we identified three types of association between age and clinical outcomes. Patients aged 85-90 may constitute the upper threshold for age categorisations, because the risk of in-hospital complications changed dramatically at that stage. This information can improve clinical awareness of various complications and support collective decision-making.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to analyze the distribution of serum uric acid (SUA) level based on more than 1000 centenarians and to explore the association with three common diseases including hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia. METHODS: All the 1002 centenarians from the CHCCS were included. Household survey was conducted. RESULTS: The mean SUA level of centenarians was 329.04 ± 97.75 µmol/L and the prevalence of hyperuricemia in centenarians was 26.5%. There was no statistical difference in the distribution of SUA levels among centenarians with or without hypertension/diabetes. For dyslipidemia, there was an independent positive association. The risk of dyslipidemia among those with hyperuricemia was 1.646 (95%CI: 1.078-2.298) compared with those who didn't have hyperuricemia. By comparing different subtypes of dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia was positively associated with hypertriglyceridemia and low-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, with the corresponding ORs of 2.553 (95%CI: 1.282-5.083) and 1.927 (95%CI: 1.273-2.917) respectively, while there was no statistically significant association with hypercholesterolemia 0.998 (95%CI: 0.574-1.732). CONCLUSIONS: There was no relation between SUA with hypertension or diabetes, while there was independently and positively association with hypertriglyceridemia and low-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia. The health benefits of controlling SUA in centenarians still require evidence based on prospective studies.
