INTRODUCTION: Oestrogen deficiency produces oxidative stress (OS) and changes in hippocampal neurons and also reduces the density of dendritic spines (DS). These alterations affect the plastic response of the hippocampus. Oestrogen replacement therapy reverses these effects, but it remains to be seen whether the same changes are produced by tibolone (TB). The aim of this study was to test the neuroprotective effects of long-term oral TB treatment and its ability to reverse DS pruning in pyramidal neurons (PN) of hippocampal area CA1. METHODS: Young Sprague Dawley rats were distributed in 3 groups: a control group in proestrus (Pro) and two ovariectomised groups (Ovx), of which one was provided with a daily TB dose (1mg/kg), OvxTB and the other with vehicle (OvxV), for 40 days in both cases. We analysed lipid peroxidation and DS density in 3 segments of apical dendrites from PNs in hippocampal area CA1. RESULTS: TB did not reduce lipid peroxidation but it did reverse the spine pruning in CA1 pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus which had been caused by ovariectomy. CONCLUSIONS: Oestrogen replacement therapy for ovariectomy-induced oestrogen deficiency has a protective effect on synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus.

RESUMEN

Musca domestica (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Muscidae), popularly known as "housefly", is a highly synanthropic species, with economic, medical-sanitary, veterinary, and forensic importance. It is able to cause damage to health, transmit pathogenic agents, cause infection in domestic animals, and, in its immature stage, cause secondary myiasis. The scavenging habit of its immature stages makes these flies pioneers in colonizing both human and animal carcasses, from the initial stages of corpse decomposition to the final stages. Intrapuparial development studies of all stages of the biological cycle of these insects help estimate pupal age, being useful to forensic entomology to aid in determining the minimum postmortem interval (minPMI). This study describes, morphologically, the external structures of the pupae, under temperatures of 23, 27, and 30 ±â€…1 °C aiming to identify the characteristics that define their developmental stages and estimation of the pupae age of M. domestica. The whole experiment was carried out under laboratory conditions, with relative humidity 60 ±â€…10% and 12 hours of photoperiod. The process of pupariation and pupation including pre-pupae phases were observed; larvae pupae apolysis; early cryptocephalic pupae; late cryptocephalic pupae; phanerocephalic pupae; pharate adult, discriminated by eye color (transparent eyes, pink eyes, and red eyes); and the emergency of adults, which occurred in the intervals of 162-180; 138-144, and 96-102 hr, respectively, being described throughout the metamorphosis of the external morphological characteristics of the pupal stage of M. domestica.

BACKGROUND: The different bony and soft tissue reference points and the micro and macroscopic structures of the knee continue to be the object of focused study and analysis. Upon reviewing the most recent literature, we saw the wide spectrum of studies that seek to define the different anatomical aspects of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to review the most recent publications on the ACL and its morphology in which its microscopic composition and macroscopic anatomy are addressed. RESULTS: The ACL consists of typeI (90%) and typeIII (10%) collagen matrix. Its length ranges from 27 to 38mm and its width from 10 to 12mm. The ACL cross-section area measures an average of 44mm2, and its shape resembles that of an hourglass or a bow tie. ACL bundles have been defined as anteromedial, intermediate, and posterolateral. Femoral and tibial footprints were seen to present a high degree of variability in shape and size. Furthermore, the blood supply is given by the medial genicular artery and innervation by the tibial nerve branches. Additionally, the ACL functionally prevents anterior translation of the tibia and stabilizes against the internal rotation of the tibia and valgus angulation of the knee. CONCLUSIONS: There is great variability in the anatomy of the ACL as well as its attachment sites. At the same time, the shape and size of its footprint has become a factor in determining individualized ACL reconstruction. The persistence of morphological variability in the aging of the ACL and important aspects of surgical planning and decision making with respect to anatomical risk factors suggest that further studies are called for.

INTRODUCTION: Different animal models for Alzheimer disease (AD) have been designed to support the hypothesis that the neurodegeneration (loss of neurons and synapses with reactive gliosis) associated with Aß and tau deposition in these models is similar to that in the human brain. These alterations produce functional changes beginning with decreased ability to carry out daily and social life activities, memory loss, and neuropsychiatric disorders in general. Neuronal alteration plays an important role in early stages of the disease, especially in the CA1 area of hippocampus in both human and animal models. METHODS: Two groups (WT and 3xTg-AD) of 11-month-old female mice were used in a behavioural analysis (nest building) and a morphometric analysis of the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus. RESULTS: The 3xTg-AD mice showed a 50% reduction in nest quality associated with a significant increase in damaged neurons in the CA1 hippocampal area (26%±6%, P<.05) compared to the WT group. CONCLUSIONS: The decreased ability to carry out activities of daily living (humans) or nest building (3xTg-AD mice) is related to the neuronal alterations observed in AD. These alterations are controlled by the hippocampus. Post-mortem analyses of the human hippocampus, and the CA1 region in 3xTg-AD mice, show that these areas are associated with alterations in the deposition of Aß and tau proteins, which start accumulating in the early stages of AD.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Sperm morphology has been used as a prognostic factor in in vitro fertilization, however, in intrauterine insemination (IUI) its predictive role is controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of sperm morphology as isolated parameter of the spermiogram has on the probability of pregnancy in couples that are treated with IUI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study of IUI cycles performed in the Reproductive Medicine Unit of Clínica Las Condes between January 2016 and December 2018. Logistic regression of the following variables: sperm morphology grouped in 0-1%, 2-3% and≥4%, total progressively motile sperm count inseminated, age of the woman and the man. RESULTS: A total of 385 cases were included and clinical pregnancy was diagnosed in 85 of them. When separating into groups of sperm morphology<4% and≥4%, the pregnancy rate was 22% in both groups. The age of the woman was the only statistically significant factor in the logistic regression. The area under the ROC curve of sperm morphology as a predictor of pregnancy was 0.53. CONCLUSIONS: Our study concludes that sperm morphology should not be considered as a single parameter when deciding whether or not a couple can be treated with IUI, eliminating isolated teratozoospermia as a direct indication for in vitro fertilization. It was not possible to determine a cut-off point for sperm morphology that serves as a predictor of pregnancy.

RESUMEN

Based on morphological and molecular characters, we describe a new species of terrestrial breeding frog of the Pristimantisdanae Group from montane forests of La Mar Province, Ayacucho Department in southern Peru, at elevations from 1200 to 2000 m a.s.l. The phylogenetic analysis, based on concatenated sequences of gene fragments of 16S rRNA, RAG1, COI and TYR suggests that the new species is a sister taxon of a clade that includes one undescribed species of Pristimantis from Cusco, Pristimantispharangobates and Pristimantisrhabdolaemus. The new species is most similar to P.rhabdolaemus, which differs by lacking scapular tubercules and by its smaller size (17.0-18.6 mm in males [n = 5], 20.8-25.2 mm in females [n = 5] in the new species vs. 22.8-26.3 mm in males [n = 19], 26.0-31.9 mm in females [n = 30] of P.rhabdolaemus). Additionally, we report the prevalence of Batrachochytriumdendrobatidis (Bd) in this species.


ResumenDescribimos una nueva especie de rana terrestre de desarrollo directo del grupo Pristimantisdanae de bosques montanos procedentes de la provincia de La Mar, departamento de Ayacucho al sur de Perú con rango de distribución altitudinal entre los 1200­2000 msnm, en base a caracteres morfológicos y moleculares. El análisis filogenético basado en las secuencias concatenadas de los fragmentos de genes ARNr 16S, COI, RAG1 y TYR sugiere que la nueva especie es un taxón hermano del clado que incluye a una especie de Pristimantis no descrita de Cusco, Pristimantispharangobates y Pristimantisrhabdolaemus. La nueva especie se asemeja más a P.rhabdolaemus; de la cual difiere por la ausencia de tubérculos escapulares y su menor tamaño corporal (17.0­18.6 mm en machos [n=5], 20.8­25.2 mm en hembras [n=5] en la nueva especie vs 22.8­26.3 mm en machos [n=19], 26.0­31.9 mm en hembras [n=30] de P.rhabdolaemus). Adicionalmente, reportamos la prevalencia de Batrachochytriumdendrobatidis (Bd) en esta especie de Terrarana.

Two new species of Harpalyce are described from Cuba, H.revolutasp. nov. from a serpentine area in the northern part of E. Cuba and H.marianensissp. nov. from calcareous areas in the southern part of E. Cuba. Both have relatively small flowers, with an up to 6 mm long standard, and 2-3 mm long wings. Harpalycemarianensis is further characterized by strongly suberous (corky) young branches of a spongy consistence, deeply furrowed longitudinally, and by leaflets covered with a particular type of orange, apparently disk-shaped, sessile glands abaxially. Harpalycerevoluta, moreover, has suborbicular or broadly elliptic leaflets with a strongly recurved or sometimes revolute margin, secondary veins inconspicuous on either side; the foliar glands, by their morphology and anatomy, are of a different type. An epitype is designated for the name Harpalyce and its type, H.formosa; the distribution of both new species and their close relatives is mapped, and an updated identification key is offered, to cater for all 16 currently recognised Cuban species.


ResumenSe describen dos nuevas especies de Harpalyce para Cuba oriental, H.revolutasp. nov. de las áreas de serpentina del norte y H.marianensissp. nov. de áreas de formaciones calcáreas del sur. Ambas se caracterizan por tener flores pequeñas, con estandarte de hasta 6 mm de largo y alas de hasta 3 mm de largo. Harpalycemarianensis se distingue además por sus ramas jóvenes fuertemente suberosas, de consistencia esponjosa, profundamente surcadas longitudinalmente, y los folíolos cubiertos abaxialmente por un tipo particular de glándulas sésiles anaranjadas. Harpalycerevoluta, por su parte, tiene folíolos suborbiculares o anchamente ovales, con margen fuertemente recurvado o hasta revoluto, con venas secundarias inconspicuas en ambas caras, y glándulas foliares, por su morphología y anatomía, son de un tipo distinto. Se designa un epitipo para el nombre Harpalyce y su tipo, H.formosa. Se presenta un mapa de distribución de las nuevas especies y las relacionadas con ellas y se ofrece una clave de identificación actualizada, que incluye las 16 especies cubanas actualmente reconocidas.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the clinical utility of the radiographic evaluation of the bicipital groove in predicting long head of biceps tendon (LHBT) pathology. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted, and sixty consecutive patients proposed to shoulder arthroscopic surgery were selected. Before surgery, a radiographic evaluation was performed with a supine and a Fisk radiograph. Most supine radiographs (>75%) were non-interpretable and were excluded from the study. As some Fisk radiographs (26.7%) were also non-interpretable, that left 44 interpretable radiographs in the study. These were measured for medial opening angle, total opening angle, width and depth of the bicipital groove. The radiographic measurements and the presence of LHBT pathology, as assessed at arthroscopy, were correlated. RESULTS: Radiographic evaluation of the bicipital groove showed a mean medial opening angle of 53 ±â€¯15° (23-90), a mean total opening angle of 80 ±â€¯26° (30-135), a mean width of 10.3 ±â€¯2.5 mm (6-19) and a mean depth of 4.1 ±â€¯1.5 mm (1-8). Men had higher medial opening angle (60 vs 50°, p = 0.044) and wider grooves (11.9 vs 9.7 mm, p = 0.019). Twenty-five patients (56.8%) were found to have an abnormal LHBT. No correlation was found between the radiographic measurements and LHBT pathology. Only age was correlated with a LHBT lesion (61.8 vs 46.3 years, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that there is no correlation between radiographic morphologic evaluation of the bicipital groove and LHBT pathology.

Holothuria (Lessonothuria) coronatasp. nov. occurs in depths of 5-10 m off the Mexican Pacific coast at the Revillagigedo Archipelago. It is clearly distinguished from other species of the subgenus by the presence of tables with a circular disc and big peripheral holes, sometimes with a second series of peripheral ones, a disc with a spiny or smooth rim and a spire crossed by a single cross-beam, dorsal papillae, and ventral tube feet with curved supporting rods with a spiny edge.


?ResumenHolothuria (Lessonothuria) coronatasp. nov. habita a profundidades de 5­10 m frente a la costa del Pacífico mexicano en el archipiélago de Revillagigedo. Se distingue claramente de otras especies del subgénero por la presencia de tablas con disco circular y grandes orificios periféricos, a veces con una segunda serie de orificios periféricos, disco con borde espinoso o liso y espira con una sola viga transversal, papilas dorsales y pies ambulacrales ventrales con barrotes de soporte curvados, con borde espinoso.

RESUMEN

A new genus and species of treehopper (Membracidae: Centrotinae) from Nicaragua, Kaikaia gaga, is described and illustrated. Kaikaia is particularly notable in having an assemblage of features more characteristic of the Old World centrotine tribe Beaufortianini than currently recognized New World centrotine tribes. Kaikaia lacks cucullate setae of the mesothoracic femora, which are present in the Boocerini and to some extent, the Platycentrini. The new genus also has an additional m-cu crossvein in the forewing, as well as a frontoclypeal shape and overall appearance similar to Platycentrus Stål. Nevertheless, Kaikaia differs from Platycentrus in its narrow, straight shape of the second valvulae, which bear several prominently raised dorsal teeth and an acute projection along the dorsal margin that resemble those of some members of Nessorhinini.

INTRODUCTION: In the pediatric population, computed tomography examination of the upper cervical spine plays an important role in the diagnosis of neurological injuries involving that region. Due to the interconnected nature of the craniofacial structures, a structural change in one is expected to also cause changes in the other structures. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate relationships between atlantodental interval, cervical vertebral morphology, and facial structure in healthy adolescents using cone beam computed tomography. METHODS: Thirty subjects aged 14-20 years (10 males, mean age: 17.2 years; 20 females, mean age: 17.9 years) were included in the study. The anterior, lateral and posterior atlantodental intervals, and vertical and anteroposterior dimensions of the first and second cervical vertebrae were evaluated from cone beam computed tomography images. Facial morphology was evaluated using 7 parameters on lateral cephalometric cone beam computed tomography images and 6 parameters on posteroanterior images. The Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon test were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: Comparisons between males and females showed that most parameters were larger in males, with significant differences in vertical facial dimensions (anterior lower face height: p = 0.05; anterior upper face height: p = 0.001), (distance between the most internal point of the frontozygomatic suture and midsagittal reference plane; p = 0.01), (the distance between the deepest point of the right alveolar maxillar process and midsagittal reference plane; p = 0.001), and C2 vertebral dimensions. The anterior and lateral atlantodental interval values correlated with maxilla position relative to the mandible angle, and the anterior atlantodental interval correlated with lower anterior facial height (p = 0.05). Dimensional measurements of the C1 and C2 vertebrae were correlated with both anterior facial heights and some posteroanterior parameters. CONCLUSION: Sagittal, vertical, and transverse facial dimensions and positions were strongly associated with C1 and C2 vertebral dimensions, and the maxillomandibular relationship may affect atlantodental interval. Therefore, including craniofacial features in assessment of the atlantodental area and vertebral distances in adolescents may be beneficial.

A Chilean 35-year-old male patient with a history of primary infertility made an appointment at the Unit of Reproductive Medicine at Clínica Las Condes, Santiago, Chile. Multiple semen analyses revealed abnormal sperm morphology as the most prevalent finding. Multiflagellated and macrocephalic spermatozoa were observed and indicated a possible macrozoospermic phenotype. The constant presence of abnormal sperm morphology led the scope of the study to include Aurora Kinase C (AURKC) gene sequencing. The patient was diagnosed with a homozygous mutation of this gene. The mutation was detected in exon 6, type c.744C>G+/+ (P.Y248*) variant. As previously described in the Human Gene Mutation Database (HGMD), this pathogenic variant is associated with macrozoospermia. Although this mutation is not the most frequently observed, it is the first of its kind reported in Latin America.

In forensic entomology, the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin) estimative is usually based on the oldest immature recovered from a local of death. The time spent by fly immatures in the intrapuparial period comprises more than 50% of their complete life cycles. An accurate estimate of the duration of this period will improve PMImin estimates. The blow fly Hemilucilia semidiaphana (Rondani 1850) was found in six criminal cases in the city of Curitiba. Even though there is data on the morphology of the larval instars and developmental rate of H. semidiaphana, the intrapuparial period has not been investigated. Here, we provide a detailed description of the intrapuparial morphological changes of H. semidiaphana, which might be useful to estimate minimum PMI. Samples of H. semidiaphana in the intrapuparial period were obtained from immatures reared on an artificial diet in incubators adjusted to 25°C or 20°C temperature regimes. Blow fly puparia of H. semidiaphana were fixed at intervals of 3 and 6 h until emergence of the adult. The external morphological traits of sampled immatures were analyzed using light microscopy. Our analysis of the intrapuparial period of H. semidiaphana provided 21 traits from which nine were age informative. These nine characteristics divide the developmental time (144 h at 25°C and 192 h at 20°C) into smaller sections. The developmental data provided, together with the time line allows a practical way to make interspecific comparisons as well as to estimate the age of H. semidiaphana based on the intrapuparial development.

BACKGROUND: Some authors have suggested that the diminished vascular blood supply, peripheral stability and thickness of the discoid meniscus (DM) would make it more prone to tears. The aims of this study are two-fold: 1) To analyse morphological characteristics by magnetic resonance (MRI), and 2) To correlate the size of the meniscus with the presence of meniscal tears. METHODS: The MRI of patients ≤18 years-old over a period of 5 years were reviewed, and patients with DM were identified. We analysed demographic data, location (medial or lateral), morphology (Watanabe), meniscal tears (Crues classification), pattern, displacement, and other associated findings. Meniscal height and thickness per width (TxW) were also calculated. The correlation between variables: morphology, height and TxW with the presence of meniscal tears were statistically analysed. RESULTS: Six hundred and eighty-five MRI (675 patients) were analysed. Forty-three knees (38 patients, 20 males) were found to have a DM (6.3%). The average age was 12.2±3.8 years (range: 4-18 years). Sixty-three percent had some type of meniscal injury. Patients with complete MD had a higher incidence of injuries (77.3 vs. 47.6%; P=.001). Longitudinal (bucket handle) and complex tears (n ??=11) only occurred in patients with complete DM. DM with tears presented a nonsignificant tendency to have higher meniscal height and higher TxW (6.29±1.26 vs 5.75±.66mm; P=.20 and 107.5±36.02 vs. 91.54±16.5mm2; P=.162). CONCLUSION: The results of this series support the theory that a larger meniscal size would be one of the main predisposing factors for the DM to be injured. Objetivos: Evaluar mediante microscopia quirúrgica la presencia del segundo conducto mesiovestibular (MV2) en el piso de la cámara pulpar de los primeros molares superiores, determinar su abordabilidad, establecer el calibre de lima que llegó al tercio apical y tipificar radiovisiográficamente su morfología se-gún la clasificación de Weine. Materiales y métodos: Se utilizaron 48 primeros molares superiores huma-nos extraídos. Sé tomaron radiovisografías preope-ratorias (Carestream 5200) en sentido orto radial y mesio-distal. Se realizó apertura y se localizó entra-da del MV2 con microscopio quirúrgico (Newton MEC XXI, Argentina) a 16 x. Se cateterizó MV1 y MV2 con limas tipo K #10 y #15 (Dentsply Maillefer). Se cortó raíz distovestibular para mejorar visualización ra-diovisográfica. Se tomó conductometria en sentido mesio-distal para establecer la tipología. Se compa-raron frecuencias y porcentajes mediante test de Chi-cuadrado con corrección de Yates, prueba exac-ta de Fisher y test z para diferencia de proporcio-nes. Se calcularon intervalos de confianza 95% para porcentajes mediante método score de Wilson. Re-sultados: El 54% (26 casos) presentó MV2. De los 26 MV2, el 77% (20 casos) fueron abordables, porcen-taje significativamente mayor al 23% no abordable (z=3,62; P<0,05). Al hacer cateterismo, hubo asocia-ción significativa entre tipo de conducto (MV1 y MV2) y calibre de lima que llegó al tercio apical (Chi-cua-drado=29,12; gl=1; P<0,05). La tipología I (58%) fue significativamente mayor que las tipologías II (21%) y III (21%) (P<0,05 para ambas comparaciones). Con-clusión: El alto porcentaje de piezas que presentó MV2 evidencia la importancia clínica de detectarlo y tratarlo correctamente. Dado el alto porcentaje de piezas donde fue abordable, se concluye que el clíni-co debe tener conocimiento, destreza y la tecnología necesaria para poder abordarlo. Si bien la tipología I (58%) fue la más encontrada, cuando el MV2 termina en foramen independiente (tipo III), su omisión puede conducir al fracaso del tratamiento (AU))


Objectives: To evaluate by surgical microscopy the presence of second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) in the pulp chamber floor of the maxillary first molars, determine its approachability, establish the caliber of the file that reached the apical third, and radiographically typify its morphology according to Weine ́s classification. Materials and methods: 48 extracted human maxillary first molars were used. Preoperative radiovisographies (Carestream 5200) were taken in ortho-radial and mesio-distal direction. Coronal access was made and the entrance of MB2 was located with a surgical microscope (Newton MEC XXI, Argentina) at 16x. MB1 and MB2 were catheterized with K files #10 and #15 (Dentsply Maillefer). Distobuccal root was cut to improve radiovisographic visualization. Conductometry was taken in mesio-distal direction to establish the typology. Frequencies and percentages were compared using Chi-square test with Yates correction, Fisher's exact test and z test for difference in proportions. 95% confidence intervals were calculated for percentages using Wilson score method. Results: 54% (26 cases) presented MB2. Of the 26 MB2, 77% (20 cases) were approachable, a significantly higher percentage than those not approachable (z=3.62; P<0.05). When performing catheterization, there was a significant association between type of canal (MB1 and MB2) and file caliber that reached the apical third (Chi-square=29.12; df=1; P<0.05). Typology I (58%) was significantly higher than typologies II (21%) and III (21%) (P<0.05 for both comparisons). Conclusion: The high percentage of specimens that showed MB2 evidence the clinical importance of detecting and treating it correctly. Given the percentage of pieces where it was approachable (77%), it is concluded that the clinician must have the knowledge, skill and necessary technology to be able to approach it. Although typology I (58%) was the most found, when MB2 ends an independent foramen (type III), its omission can lead to treatment failure (AU)

Phosphorus (P) use efficiency is crucial for sorghum production. P acquisition efficiency is the most important component of P use efficiency. The early-stage evaluation of plant development is a useful tool for identifying P-efficient genotypes. This study aimed to identify sorghum hybrids that are efficient in P use efficiency and assess the genetic diversity among hybrids based on traits related to P acquisition efficiency. Thus, 38 sorghum hybrids and two inbred lines (checks) were evaluated under low and high P in a paper pouch system with nutrient solution. Biomass and root traits related to P efficiency were measured. There was no interaction between genotypes and P levels concerning all evaluated traits. The biomass and root traits, except root diameter, presented smaller means under low P than high P. Efficient and inefficient hybrids under each P level were identified. The genetic diversity assessment grouped these genotypes in different clusters. The hybrids AG1090, MSK326, AG1060, 1G100, AS 4639, DKB 540, and DKB 590 were superior under low-P and high-P. Hybrids SC121, 1236020 e 1167017 presented the lowest means than all other hybrids, under both conditions. The evaluated hybrids showed phenotypic diversity for traits related to P acquisition, such as root length and root surface area, which can be useful for establishing selection strategies for sorghum breeding programs and increasing P use efficiency.


A eficiência do uso do fósforo (P) é fundamental para a produção de sorgo. A avaliação no estágio inicial do desenvolvimento da planta é uma ferramenta útil para a identificação de genótipos eficientes de P. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar híbridos de sorgo que sejam eficientes ao uso de P e avaliar a diversidade genética entre os híbridos com base em características relacionadas à eficiência de aquisição de P. Assim, 38 híbridos de sorgo e duas linhagens (testemunhas) foram avaliados sob baixo e alto P em sistema de pastas de papel com solução nutritiva. Características de biomassa e de raiz relacionadas à eficiência de P foram mensuradas. Não houve interação entre genótipos e níveis de P em todas as características avaliadas. As características de biomassa e raiz, exceto o diâmetro da raiz, apresentaram médias menores sob baixo P em comparação com alto P. Híbridos eficientes e ineficientes sob cada nível de P foram identificados e agrupados quanto à diversidade genética. Os híbridos AG1090, MSK326, AG1060, 1G100, AS 4639, DKB 540 e DKB 590 foram superiores sob baixo-P e alto-P. Os híbridos SC121, 1236020 e 1167017 apresentaram as menores médias que todos os outros híbridos, em ambas condições. Os híbridos avaliados apresentaram diversidade fenotípica para características relacionadas à aquisição de P, como comprimento e área superficial da raiz, o que pode ser útil para estabelecer estratégias de seleção para programas de melhoramento de sorgo e aumentar a eficiência de uso do P.

Las técnicas de doble tinción y transparentación se han usado desde 1897, pero su utilidad ha sido poco explorada en los estudios anatómicos de micromamíferos adultos. No obstante, la combinación de estas técnicas con el análisis alométrico mutivariado posibilita el estudio de esqueletos poscraneales articulados de tales grupos de micromamíferos como los roedores, los cuales son muy limitados ya que casi siempre se enfocan en los cráneos. En este estudio, analizamos y comparamos la morfometría del esqueleto de Neotomodon alstoni con la de Meriones unguiculatus, Phodopus campbelli y Rattus norvegicus. Usamos la técnica de doble tinción y transparentación para analizar las relaciones morfométricas entre estos roedores utilizando sesenta caracteres esqueléticos. Se encontró que tres especies comparten dos correlaciones comunes y compartieron el mismo tipo de crecimiento isométrico en una de ellas; además se encontraron similitudes aparentes entre los patrones de la morfometría de P campbelli con el patrón de osificación descrito para la especie relacionada Mesocricetus auratus. Las diferencias en el crecimiento alométrico pueden representar también diferencias en el ritmo de desarrollo de acuerdo con el tipo de historia de vida de cada especie. Aquí demostramos que tanto la técnica de preparación como el método de análisis morfométricos son herramientas poderosas pero simples, para realizar estudios anatómicos y morfológicos en el laboratorio. Nuestros resultados reflejan las condiciones del desarrollo ontogenético derivados delpropio patrón de heterocronía para cada especie, y además representan la historia evolutiva de este grupo analizado. Sin embargo, consideramos que es deseable más investigación.


SUMMARY: Clearing and staining techniques have been present since 1897, However, their use in anatomical studies of adult micromammals has been limited. When using such techniques in combination with allometric method, it is possible to study articulated skeletons of micromammals, instead of relying only on the skulls, which is important in morphologically complicated groups as the rodents. Research involving multivariate allometric analysis of postcranial skeleton of rodents has been limited and confined to specific items. In this study, we analyzed and compared the morphometry of the skeleton of Neotomodon alstoni with that of Meriones unguiculatus, Phodopus campbelli and Rattus norvegicus. We applied the double staining and clearing technique in order to determine the morphometric relation between these rodents using sixty skeletal characters. We found that three species share two common correlations and one isometric, with apparent similarities between the morphometry patterns of P campbelli with the ossification pattern described for the related species Mesocricetus auratus. The differences in allometric growth could represent differences in the development stages according to the type of life history for each species. In this analysis we confirmed that both the preparation technique and morphometric analysis method, are simple yet verifiable tools for anatomical and morphological studies. Our results reflect the conditions of ontogenetic development derived from the heterochrony pattern for each species, representing the evolutionary history for this group. Therefore, as this approach continues to be discussed, ongoing research is warranted.
