BACKGROUND: Designing competency-based education (CBE) programmes is a priority in global nursing education for better nursing care for the population. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), object-based education (OBE) remains mainstream in pre-service nursing education programmes. Recently, the Ministry of Health developed a self-assessment tool and quantitatively compared the clinical competency of CBE- and OBE-trained nurses. This study aimed to qualitatively triangulate the results of self-evaluation by exploring perception of supervisors, incumbent CBE-, and OBE-trained nurses in comparison with the competence of the two types of nurses, and to identify influential factors or barriers to their competence in clinical settings. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach with conventional content analysis was applied. Twenty interviews with clinical supervisors who oversaw both CBE- and OBE-trained nurses, 22 focus group discussions (FGDs) with CBE-trained nurses, and 21 FGDs with OBA-trained nurses currently working in health facilities were conducted. Participants of the FGDs were selected from the participants of the DRC self-assessment competency comparison study where there was no statistically significance between CBE- and OBE-trained nurses in the demographic characteristics. Data were analysed in terms of the competencies identified by the Ministry of Health. RESULTS: The supervisors recognised that the CBE-trained nurses had stronger competencies in professional communication, making decisions about health problems, and engaging in professional development, but were weak in clinical skills. This study identified challenges for supervisors in assuring standardised care in health facilities with OBE- and CBE-trained nurses, as well as barriers for CBE-trained nurses as a minority in the workplace in demonstrating their competencies. CONCLUSIONS: The study results support the Ministry of Health's policy to expand CBE in pre-service education programmes but reveal that its slow implementation impedes full utilisation of the acquired competencies at health facilities. Implementation could be accelerated by strengthening cooperation among the Ministry of Health's three human resource departments, and developing and implementing a well-planned, legally binding, long-term CBE reform strategy, including an approach to the Continuing Professional Development system.

PURPOSE: Bullying of leaders is an underexplored topic in organizational research. To fill this knowledge gap, the aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of bullying of leaders and to examine whether holding a formal leadership position influences the relationships between exposure to bullying and the outcomes job satisfaction and depression. METHODS: Data from two separate surveys were employed: (1) A cross-sectional occupation specific sample comprising 678 Norwegian child welfare social workers; (2) A nationally representative probability sample of 1,608 Norwegian employees with two time-points (6 months' time-lag). RESULTS: Analyzing multiple indicators of workplace bullying, holding a formal leadership position had no impact on the initial risk of being bullied. Analyses of prospective data showed that leaders report a somewhat stronger increase in levels of bullying over time compared to non-leaders, although the effect size was small. With exception of a small buffering effect on the cross-sectional association between exposure to bullying behaviors and job satisfaction in the second sample, holding a leadership position had no effect on the strength of the association between bullying and outcomes. CONCLUSION: The findings show that leaders have the same risk of being bullied and are influenced by bullying in roughly the same manner as non-leaders. Organizational measures and interventions against bullying should therefore consider leaders as a risk group in line with other employees.

PURPOSE: Professional Identity Formation (PIF) is crucial for high-quality patient care and physician well-being. Few empirical studies examined PIF in residency from the perspective of supervisors. In GP residency, residents are supervised with an 'end in mind' that remains unexplored. To encourage supervisors to reflect on their teaching behaviours, this study investigated GP clinical supervisors' perceptions of PIF outcomes in GP residency. METHODS: Applying qualitative description, focus group interviews were conducted between spring and autumn 2019. Using a semi-structured interview guide, supervisors' perceptions of PIF outcomes were explored. In an iterative coding process applying constant comparison, a thematic analysis was performed of focus group transcripts. RESULTS: We conducted eight focus groups with 55 supervisors at four training institutes across the Netherlands. Half of the supervisors were female. GP supervisors tend to address the 'poor GP' when prompted to address the 'good GP'. PIF outcomes in GP residency should revolve around taking ownership in patient care, self-care and the persistence of GP as a profession. CONCLUSION: PIF can be challenged by a lack of positive language. Supervisors' strong beliefs regarding ideals of the profession potentially compromise PIF when they do not resonate with residents' beliefs, resulting in poor educational alliance.

BACKGROUND: Medical student master's theses are often carried out as research projects, and some are published as research papers in journals. We investigated the percentage of master's theses conducted by 5th -year students at the Medical Degree Program at Lund University, Sweden, that subsequently served as the basis for research publications. In addition, we explored both student and supervisor experiences with the publishing process. METHODS: A cohort of four semesters of student data covering the period from 2019 to 2020 (n = 446) was searched in PubMed, Embase and the Web of Science to assess whether they had been published as research papers. Surveys were sent to students (n = 121) and supervisors (n = 77) to explore their experiences with the publishing process. RESULTS: We found that 33% (149 of 446) of the students in the 2019-2020 cohort subsequently published their theses, and 50% of these students were listed as first authors. Most students published original research. Students (n = 21) and supervisors (n = 44) reported that the publishing process was time-consuming and that students needed multilevel support from supervisors to achieve successful publication. The publishing process was reported by 79% of the students to have led to additional learning. Most of the papers (126 of 149, 85%) had a clinical or patient-oriented focus. CONCLUSION: A high percentage of the student publications in which students are listed as first authors require engagement from both students and supervisors. Supervisors play an essential role in supporting students in a successful publication process. Most of the published papers were either clinical or patient-oriented research.

PURPOSE: Supervisors play a crucial role in sustainable employment of employees with a work disability. The 'Mentorwijs' (literal translation: Mentorwise) training was developed to train supervisors in knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to guide these employees. This study evaluated the effect of 'Mentorwijs' on employees' employment and supervisors' behavioral outcomes. METHODS: Register- and questionnaire data were obtained from 73 employees and 1,526 matched controls to measure employment (≥ 1/month, ≥ 12 h/week and ≥ 3 consecutive months (≥ 1 h/month)) during a 12-month follow-up period. Questionnaire data were obtained from 127 supervisors who followed the 'Mentorwijs' training, to assess their knowledge, self-efficacy, intention to adopt and applied behaviors. RESULTS: Employment for ≥ 1 h/month did not significantly improve after 3 (ß = 0.05; CI=-0.07-0.16), 6 (ß = 0.07; CI=-0.04-0.18), 9 (ß = 0.08; CI=-0.02-0.18) and 12 (ß = 0.01; CI=-0.08-0.10) months among employees whose supervisors followed 'Mentorwijs' compared to those who did not. Significant effects were found after 8 months (ß = 0.11; CI = 0.01-0.21). Comparable effects were found for employment ≥ 12 hour/week and ≥ 3 consecutive months (≥ 1 hour/month). Supervisors' knowledge and self-efficacy significantly improved as a result of 'Mentorwijs', but no effects were found for intention to adopt and applied behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: 'Mentorwijs' is a promising training to improve the guidance of employees with a work disability. Further research is needed to examine how long-term effects of 'Mentorwijs' on employment can be sustained.

PURPOSE: Individuals living with chronic physical or mental health/cognitive conditions must make decisions that are sometimes difficult about whether to disclose health information at work. This research investigated workers' decisions to not to disclose any information at work, disclosure to a supervisor only, co-workers only, or to both a supervisor and co-workers. It also examined personal, health, and work factors associated with disclosure to different groups compared to not disclosing information. METHODS: Employed workers with a physical or mental health/cognitive condition were recruited for a cross-sectional survey from a national panel of Canadians. Respondents were asked about disclosure decisions, demographics, health, working experience, work context, and work perceptions. Multinomial logistic regressions examined predictors of disclosure. RESULTS: There were 882 respondents (57.9% women). Most had disclosed to both co-workers and supervisors (44.2%) with 23.6% disclosing to co-workers only and 7% to a supervisor only. Age, health variability, and number of accommodations used were significant predictors of disclosure for all groups. Job disruptions were associated with disclosure to supervisors only and pain and comfort sharing were associated with co-worker disclosure. CONCLUSION: The findings highlight that disclosure to co-workers is common despite being an overlooked group in workplace disclosure research. Although many similar factors predicted disclosure to different groups, further research on workplace environments and culture would be useful in efforts to enhance workplace support.

Background: Clinical education is considered a vital aspect of education of health science students. Attributes of clinical educators play a crucial role in determining the outcome of clinical teaching and learning. A good clinical educator ensures that students get maximum benefits of the clinical learning experience. Objective: To determine the ratings of physiotherapy students on clinical education attributes of lecturers and clinical supervisors. Methods: The study was conducted with 81 clinical physiotherapy students from two universities in Ghana. Two copies of McGill clinical teachers' evaluation (CTE) tool were used to obtain students' ratings on their clinical supervisors' and lecturers' clinical education attributes. Independent t-test was used to compare the means of students' level of study and ratings regarding the clinical education attributes of clinical supervisors and lecturers. Results: Students had a high rating on their clinical education attributes of supervisors and lecturers with a mean score of (121.22±18.12) and (122.11±16.71), respectively. Rating on clinical education attributes of supervisors (p=0.111) and lecturers (p=0.124) did not differ significantly between the different levels of study. Conclusion: Clinical physiotherapy students rated the clinical education attributes of their lecturers and supervisors high.

BACKGROUND: Adoption of electronic health care records (EHRs) has proliferated since 2000. While EHR transitions are widely understood to be disruptive, little attention has been paid to their effect on health professions trainees' (HPTs) ability to learn and conduct work. Veterans Health Administration's (VA) massive transition from its homegrown EHR (CPRS/Vista) to the commercial Oracle Cerner presents an unparalleled-in-scope opportunity to gain insight on trainee work functions and their ability to obtain requisite experience during transitions. OBJECTIVE: To identify how an organizational EHR transition affected HPT work and learning at the third VA go-live site. DESIGN: A formative mixed-method evaluation of HPT experiences with VHA's EHR transition including interviews with HPTs and supervisors at Chalmers P. Wylie VA Outpatient Clinic in Columbus, OH, before (~60 min), during (15-30 min), and after (~60 min) go-live (December 2021-July 2022). We also conducted pre- (March 2022-April 2022) and post-go live (May 2022-June 2022) HPT and employee surveys. PARTICIPANTS: We conducted 24 interviews with HPTs (n=4), site leaders (n=2), and academic affiliates (n=2) using snowball sampling. We recruited HPTs in pre- (n=13) and post-go-live (n=10) surveys and employees in pre- (n=408) and post-go-live (n=458) surveys. APPROACH: We conducted interviews using a semi-structured guide and grounded prompts. We coded interviews and survey free text data using a priori and emergent codes, subsequently conducting thematic analysis. We conducted descriptive statistical analysis of survey responses and merged interview and survey data streams. KEY RESULTS: Our preliminary findings indicate that the EHR transition comprehensively affected HPT experiences, disrupting processes from onboarding and training to clinical care contributions and training-to-career retention. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding HPTs' challenges during EHR transitions is critical to effective training. Mitigating the identified barriers to HPT training and providing patient care may lessen their dissatisfaction and ensure quality patient care during EHR transitions.

Competency-based assessment is undergoing an evolution with the popularisation of programmatic assessment. Fundamental to programmatic assessment are the attributes and buy-in of the people participating in the system. Our previous research revealed unspoken, yet influential, cultural and relationship dynamics that interact with programmatic assessment to influence success. Pulling at this thread, we conducted secondary analysis of focus groups and interviews (n = 44 supervisors) using the critical lens of Positioning Theory to explore how workplace supervisors experienced and perceived their positioning within programmatic assessment. We found that supervisors positioned themselves in two of three ways. First, supervisors universally positioned themselves as a Teacher, describing an inherent duty to educate students. Enactment of this position was dichotomous, with some supervisors ascribing a passive and disempowered position onto students while others empowered students by cultivating an egalitarian teaching relationship. Second, two mutually exclusive positions were described-either Gatekeeper or Team Member. Supervisors positioning themselves as Gatekeepers had a duty to protect the community and were vigilant to the detection of inadequate student performance. Programmatic assessment challenged this positioning by reorientating supervisor rights and duties which diminished their perceived authority and led to frustration and resistance. In contrast, Team Members enacted a right to make a valuable contribution to programmatic assessment and felt liberated from the burden of assessment, enabling them to assent power shifts towards students and the university. Identifying supervisor positions revealed how programmatic assessment challenged traditional structures and ideologies, impeding success, and provides insights into supporting supervisors in programmatic assessment.

BACKGROUND: After a Design Team (DT) conducted a workforce health assessment of correctional supervisors, they selected sleep as an intervention priority, given its numerous health and work consequences. Existing workplace sleep interventions are designed with little worker input, but participatory solutions that incorporate workers' lived experiences and root causes of poor sleep may be more relevant, appropriate, and acceptable to end-users, resulting in better uptake. METHODS: The DT met bi-monthly to complete the Intervention Design and Analysis Scorecard (IDEAS) tool to brainstorm interventions that address root causes of poor sleep, and evaluate, rank, and select interventions for implementation. We conducted a qualitative review of meeting notes and worksheets from each IDEAS step, and present our findings on root causes and prioritized solutions. RESULTS: The DT consisted of two university researchers and seven members of a correctional supervisors' union, with 5-9 participants attending each meeting. IDEAS Steps 1-5 were completed in eight meetings over six months. Root causes of poor sleep included mind/body and environmental disruptions, and insufficient time. Three solutions were proposed: training on sleep hygiene, meditation, and sleep debt management; a sleep-tracking smartphone app; and a shared overtime policy based on splitting one 8-hour shift between two supervisors. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first known application of IDEAS to address sleep, and targeting root causes may result in more efficacious interventions for sleep improvement. Moreover, because IDEAS guides DTs in selecting solutions with the greatest perceived health benefits, reach, cost-effectiveness, and feasibility, it may result in more successful implementation.

PURPOSE: For employees with a work disability adequate daily guidance from supervisors is key for sustainable employability. Supervisors often lack expertise to guide this group of employees. Mentorwijs (literal translation: Mentorwise) is a training for supervisors to improve the guidance of employees with a work disability. The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of employees with a work disability regarding: (1) the guidance from their supervisors (who followed the Mentorwijs training), (2) which differences they notice in the guidance due to the Mentorwijs training, and (3) what kind of aspects they consider important in their guidance to achieve sustainable employability. METHODS: A qualitative study was performed with semi-structured (group) interviews among twenty-one employees with a work disability. Thematic analysis was performed to analyze the data. RESULTS: Themes that followed from the interviews were: (1) work tasks and conditions can facilitate or hinder sustainable employability: (2) relationships among employees and with supervisors can affect sustainable employability; (3) a desire for new opportunities and challenges; and (4) a need for supervisor skills to facilitate sustainable employability, i.e. appreciation, availability of help, dealing with problems, listening, attitude and communication. According to employees, changes were mainly noticed in supervisor skills. CONCLUSIONS: Employees with a work disability were very satisfied with the guidance of supervisors who followed the Mentorwijs training. To improve sustainable employability, training of supervisors should focus more on adequate work conditions, providing employees opportunities to learn new work tasks and improving supervisors' skills regarding appreciation, attitude and communication.

Promoting research integrity practices among doctoral candidates and early career researchers is important for creating a stable and healthy research environment. In addition to teaching specific technical skills and knowledge, research supervisors and mentors inevitably convey research practices, both directly and indirectly. We conducted a scoping review to summarise the role of mentors in fostering research integrity practices, mentors' responsibilities and the role that institutions have in supporting good mentorship. We searched five different databases and included studies that used an empirical methodology. After searching, a total of 1199 articles were retrieved, of which 24 were eligible for analysis. After snowballing, a total of 35 empirical articles were selected. The review discusses various themes such as the importance of good mentorship, poor mentorship practices, virtues and qualities of mentors, responsibilities and activities of mentors, group mentoring and responsibilities of the institution in supporting good mentorship. This review demonstrates the importance of mentors instilling responsible research practices and attitudes, and promoting research integrity among their mentees. Mentors are responsible for providing explicit guidance and for acting as good role models. The review highlights how poor mentorship can have a bad impact on the research climate. In addition, the review highlights the important influence that institutions can have in supporting mentorship.

AIM: This study aimed to identify and compare age stereotypes of registered nurses and supervisors in clinical inpatient settings. DESIGN: Generic qualitative study using half-standardized interviews. METHOD: Nineteen face-to-face interviews and five focus groups (N = 50) were conducted with nurses of varying levels at a hospital of maximum medical care in Germany between August and November 2018 and were subjected to structured qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: Reflecting the ageing process and cooperation in mixed-age teams, nursing staff and supervisors defined similar age stereotypes towards older and younger nurses reminiscent of common generational labels 'Baby Boomers' and Generations X. Their evaluation created an inconsistent and contradictory pattern differing to the respective work context and goals. Age stereotypes were described as both potentially beneficial and detrimental for the individual and the cooperation in the team. If a successfully implemented diversity management focuses age stereotypes, negative assumptions can be reduced and cooperation in mixed-age teams can be considered beneficial. CONCLUSION: Diversity management as measures against age stereotypes and for mutual acceptance and understanding should include staff from various hierarchical levels of the inpatient setting.

OBJECTIVES: Doctors who wish to become general practitioners (GPs) in China are required to attend and complete general practice resident training. In the early stages of the standardized GP training system, GP training supervisors play important roles. This study aims to explore how GP residents perceive their GP supervisors, factors that affect GP residents' satisfaction level, as well as to offer suggestions based on the implications of this study. DESIGN: We conducted a mixed quantitative and qualitative study. Firstly, with respect to the quantitative research, we conducted a survey to investigate training satisfaction through questionnaires, then extracted and analyzed the factors that influence training satisfaction. In the qualitative study, we conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews using qualitative research criteria (COREQ)--a 32-item checklist for interviews. PARTICIPANTS: Participants in the quantitative survey included 1172 GPs whose training time wasbetween 2008 and 2017. Afterwards, 100 participants were selected from this sample , filtered by stratified random sampling and by having provided extreme answers on the quantitative survey (less than 5% of the total sample). They were chosen for the qualitative research to conduct a more detailed investigation., This stratified random sampling was based on residents' grades, regions, and training levels (city level or county level). Extreme answers were identified as answers of "extremely good" or "extremely bad" to questions from the initial comprehensive survey of 1172 participants. Consequently, 30 participants with extreme answers were found, while the remaining 70 participants in the interviews were selected by stratified random sampling. Ultimately, this sample of participants met our information collection and sample estimation requirements. RESULTS: The results show that satisfaction with GP theoretical training supervisors, GP hospital-based training supervisors, and GP community-based training supervisors differed. Considering long-term averages, the hierarchy of satisfaction is as follows: GP theoretical training supervisors > GP community-based training supervisors > GP hospital-based training supervisors. GP hospital-based training supervisors need to improve their conception of GPs, teaching methods and conscientiousness. GP community-based training supervisors need to improve their teaching methods, knowledge of clinical theory and practice ability. CONCLUSIONS: On the one hand, teams of GP supervisors in China have gradually been established over time. On the other hand,the satisfaction tendencies of residents with respect to their GP supervisors are quite different, and teams of GP supervisors must be promoted and improved.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, optometry students have traditionally undertaken their clinical training in short-block rotations at University-led teaching clinics in metropolitan locations. Demand for clinical placements is growing as the number of optometry students steadily increases. As such, universities and clinical education providers must look for more diverse methods of student placement. Extended clinical placements in community-based settings are one alternative: a model similar to the longitudinal clerkships in medicine. This study aimed to explore the experience of extended clinical placements from the perspective of the optometrists who supervised students. It also sought to determine whether there were differences in views between metropolitan and rural practitioners. METHODS: This mixed methods study included a survey and interviews with optometrists who had previously supervised Deakin University optometry students on an extended 26-week (2 x 13-weeks) clinical placement. Lines of enquiry focused on; the benefits and challenges associated with extended placements; areas for improvement; duration of the placement; and willingness to supervise further students. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Braun and Clarke's 6 step method of thematic analysis with a qualitative descriptive approach. RESULTS: Supervisors felt that hosting a student prompted greater reflective practice and critical appraisal of clinical decisions. The extended nature of the placement was thought to foster greater immersion in the clinical setting and community for the students and establish a stronger relationship between supervisor and student. Supervisors recognised the importance of role-modelling and mentoring the next generation of optometrists however noted that taking on a student was a sizeable commitment. Willingness to host a student was not dependent on the supervisor's location (rural vs metropolitan) p = 0.57. However, interviews uncovered motivations that were unique to supervisors residing in rural locations, such as succession planning. CONCLUSION: Overall, supervisors were positive about the value of student extended clinical placement in optometry and felt that it was a fulfilling and professionally beneficial experience. Lack of time and financial remuneration were the key downsides highlighted. Schools of optometry might carefully consider engaging in discussion about the duration of such placements, but 26 weeks was considered appropriate by supervisors.

BACKGROUND: The number of students enrolled in health courses at Australian universities is rising, increasing demand for clinical placements. Optometry students have historically undertaken clinical training in short-block rotations at university-led teaching clinics in metropolitan locations. This is changing, with some optometry programs adopting extended placements. These placements are conducted in community-based practices, with many incorporating a rural component to the training. This study explored factors which influence placement success and satisfaction from the perspective of optometry students. METHODS: Nine focus groups were undertaken with 42 final year optometry students upon completion of a 26-week placement (of which at least half was undertaken in a non-metropolitan area, or area where a shortage of optometrists has been identified). Focus groups were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was conducted according to Braun and Clarke's 6 step method. RESULTS: Four key themes were identified during analysis. 'Changing identity', related to how the students grew both personally and professionally, with the extended placement being considered the vital component that allowed students to begin thinking of themselves as clinicians. The theme 'Dealing with complex dynamics and circumstances' predominantly described instances where the student-supervisor relationship was strained, resulting in high levels of anxiety made worse by a perceived lack of university support. 'Optometrist under instruction', related to students feeling that the placement was an ideal opportunity to trial the everyday reality of work without the obligation of an ongoing commitment or employment contract. Finally, the theme 'Rural practice is more rewarding', was about a chance to seek different experiences, meet new people and challenge themselves professionally. CONCLUSION: While the majority of students enjoyed their placement and felt that it was the key component of their training that equipped them for future practice, it is clear that universities and placement providers must provide both students and supervisors thorough and explicit guidance covering placement expectations. Furthermore, student support systems should be embedded into placement programs to ensure where issues arise, they are dealt with promptly and successfully. It is vital that ongoing professional development and pedagogical training for supervisors underpins continued accreditation.

BACKGROUND: Studies report that medical graduates are not prepared for practice as expected, and interventions have been developed to prepare them for practice. One such intervention is the assistantship, which provides hands-on opportunities to hone clinical skills and undertake responsibilities under supervision. The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMed) is Singapore's newest medical school, and students undergo a Student Assistantship Programme (SAP) to prepare for practice as junior doctors (PGY1). This study evaluated the SAP from the students' and clinical supervisors' perspectives. METHODS: Students completed online questionnaires to assess readiness for practice before and after SAP, and a subsample were interviewed about their experiences of SAP and its impact on their preparedness for PGY1. In addition, after our graduates had begun work as PGY1 doctors, their clinical supervisors completed an online questionnaire and were interviewed about the perceived benefits of SAP and the attributes of our graduates as junior doctors. RESULTS: Fifty (96%) students completed the pre-SAP questionnaire and 46 (92%) completed the post-SAP questionnaire. Levels of preparedness increased post-SAP (mean scores range pre-SAP: 2.38 to 4.32 vs post-SAP: 3.08 to 4.48); so did opportunities to undertake PGY1 duties (pre-SAP: 56% vs post-SAP: 96%), and hands-on experience in medical emergencies (pre-SAP: 76% vs post-SAP: 89%).Experience of acute care situations increased except "paracetamol overdose". Readiness to be first respondents in ten acute situations improved (statistically significant for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation, gastrointestinal bleed, sepsis, and adverse drug reactions). Three themes emerged from twenty-five student interviews: learning about the work environment, opportunities to learn in a safe environment, and enhancing SAP for future students. Thirty-three supervisors completed the questionnaire, and 70% rated SAP positively in preparing students for PGY1. Eight supervisors interviewed shared positively about the content, timing, and duration of SAP; and suggested future SAPs help students to develop coping and reflective skills. CONCLUSIONS: The SAP improved students' preparedness and experience across clinical areas, and students felt the SAP helped bridge undergraduate curriculum and work, provided opportunities to hone their skills and learn from junior doctors. Most clinical supervisors rated the SAP effective in preparing students for PGY1. This is the first formal evaluation of an assistantship in Singapore, and the findings are encouraging from the perspective of students and PGY1 supervisors.

BACKGROUND: Medical degree programs use scholarly activities to support development of basic research skills, critical evaluation of medical information and promotion of medical research. The University of Sydney Doctor of Medicine Program includes a compulsory research project. Medical student projects are supervised by academic staff and affiliates, including biomedical science researchers and clinician-academics. This study investigated research supervisors' observations of the barriers to and enablers of successful medical student research projects. METHODS: Research supervisors (n = 130) completed an anonymous, online survey after the completion of the research project. Survey questions targeted the research supervisors' perceptions of barriers to successful completion of projects and sources of support for their supervision of the student project. Data were analysed by descriptive statistics and using manifest content analysis. Further quantitative investigation was made by cross-tabulation according to prior research supervision experience. RESULTS: Research supervisors reported that students needed both generic skills (75%) and research-based skills (71%) to successfully complete the project. The major barrier to successful research projects was the lack of protected time for research activities (61%). The assessment schedule with compulsory progress milestones enabled project completion (75%), and improved scientific presentation (90%) and writing (93%) skills. Supervisors requested further support for their students for statistics (75%), scientific writing (51%), and funding for projects (52%). Prior research supervision experience influenced the responses. Compared to novice supervisors, highly experienced supervisors were significantly more likely to want students to be allocated dedicated time for the project (P < 0.01) and reported higher rates of access to expert assistance in scientific writing, preparing ethics applications and research methodology. Novice supervisors reported higher rates of unexpected project delays and data acquisition problems (P < 0.05). Co-supervision was favoured by experienced supervisors but rejected by novice supervisors. CONCLUSIONS: Both generic and research-related skills were important for medical student research project success. Overall, protected research time, financial and other academic support were identified as factors that would improve the research project program. Prior research supervision experience influences perceptions of program barriers and enablers. These findings will inform future support needs for projects and research supervisor training for the research supervision role.

This content analysis of open-ended survey responses compares and contrasts perceptions on supervision from supervisors with experience providing direct peer support services (PS) and supervisors without experience providing direct peer support services (NPS).A 16-item online survey was distributed via the National Association of Peer Supporters (N.A.P.S.) listserv and through peer networks and peer run organizations. Responses from 837 respondents, across 46 US states, were analyzed. Four open ended questions assessed supervisors' perceptions on differences supervising peer support workers (PSW) as compared to other staff, important qualities of PSW supervisors, roles when supervising a PSW, and concerns about PSWs in the organization. Among NPS and PS, three major differences in themes emerged: the knowledge required of supervisors, understanding of the role of the PSW, and supervisors' beliefs regarding PSW competencies. PS have a more nuanced understanding of the peer support worker role and the impact of lived experience in the role.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this project was to evaluate the experiences of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) trainees in a regional centre who participated in a psychodynamic psychotherapy written case supervision group with three co-supervisors. METHOD: A web-based survey was sent to RANZCP trainees. Descriptive statistics were performed, and written feedback was analysed. RESULTS: A total of 8 of 10 eligible trainees completed the survey. All respondents stated that the group met their training needs. The average rating of feeling understood by supervisors was 91 (maximum 100). Positive feedback was received about the variety and breadth of experience provided by the co-supervisors. Trainees felt that 1:1 supervision was important to complement group supervision. CONCLUSIONS: The supervision group model with three co-supervisors is competently meeting the training needs of RANZCP trainees as well as providing a deep learning experience. This model may be of use in other services, particularly in regional settings.
