RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to determine the effects on the colour of adding increasing concentrations of graphene to orthodontic fixed retainer adhesives and to evaluate changes in optical transmission during light curing and the resultant degree of conversion. Two different types of adhesives commonly used for fixed retainers were investigated: A packable composite (Transbond) and a flowable composite (Transbond Supreme). Graphene was added to the adhesives in three different concentrations (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 wt%). Adhesives without graphene addition were set as control groups. A Minolta colourimeter was used to measure the colour and translucency parameters. Irradiance transmitted during curing was quantified using MARC Light Collector. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to record degree of conversion. Data were statistically analysed with the Student's t-test and one-way ANOVA with Tukey's tests (α = 0.05). The findings showed that incorporating graphene darkened the adhesive colour significantly and reduced translucency. As the graphene concentration reached 0.1 wt%, samples became opaque; yet, no adverse effect on degree of conversion was observed. The addition of graphene reduces optical transmission of lingual retainer adhesives; the effect increases with graphene concentration.

This study evaluated the effect on adhesive layer thickness, bond strength, and adhesive failure pattern of the application of universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal) using either manual or rotary brush in dentin previously impregnated with bioceramic sealer (Sealer Plus BC) using a manual brush, at 24 h and 1 year. Eighty-eight bovine crowns were divided into four groups (n = 22) according to the intervention: (i) use of bioceramic sealer and adhesive application using manual brush, (ii) use of bioceramic sealer and adhesive application using rotary brush, (iii) use of resin sealer and adhesive application using manual brush, and (iv) use of resin sealer and adhesive application using rotary brush. Subsequently, specimens were restored with a composite resin (Filtek Z-250). Adhesive layer thickness was evaluated using confocal microscopy. Bond strength was assessed using the microtensile bond strength test, and adhesive failure pattern was evaluated under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA/Tukey tests. Specimens where a rotary brush had been used exhibited lower adhesive layer thickness. Specimens treated with resin sealer and using a manual brush showed lower bond strength values and a higher occurrence of adhesive failures at 24 h and 1 year than specimens treated with bioceramic sealer and using rotary brush for adhesive application.

This study evaluated bond strength of glass fiber posts to root dentin using push-out (PO) and diametral compression (DC), testing glycolic acid as a conditioner and varying dentin moisture. An additional aim was to test whether DC can be an alternative test to PO for bond strength assessment. Eighty bovine teeth were divided into eight groups (n = 10) defined by the use of either 37% glycolic acid or 37% phosphoric acid (PA) on moist or wet dentin before bonding with either Adapter SingleBond/RelyX ARC or One Step Plus/Duo-Link Bisco. Each tooth provided discs with an internal diameter of 2 mm, external diameter of 5 mm, and height of 2 mm, which underwent PO and DC. Finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out on 3D models. When analyzing PO results through linear regression, the highest values of bond strength were observed using glycolic acid on wet dentin in the cervical and middle thirds of the teeth. Analyzing DC results, the only statistical influence on values was the dental thirds. The scatterplot of the DC results and the PO bond strength values indicated no relationship between the results of the two tests (r = 0.03; p = 0.64). PO test detected more sensitive changes in bond strength values than DC.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of n-propyl gallate as pre-treatment for resin-dentin bond strength. The dentin pre-treatments evaluated included propyl gallate of concentrations 0.1% (w/v), 1.0% (w/v), and 10.0% (w/v), as well as glutaraldehyde 5.0% (v/v), and distilled water as a control treatment. Dentin specimens were prepared for Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) (n = 3/pre-treatment). Pre-treatments were actively applied to dentin blocks before performing the adhesive procedure to composite resin. Microtensile bond strength to dentin (µTBS) (n = 8/pre-treatment) was determined after 24 h and 6 months of storage. Data were submitted to a two-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's post hoc test. As for FT-IR, propyl gallate 1%-treated specimens presented higher water, carbonate, collagen, and amide absorbance rates compared to other tested groups, while specimens pre-treated with glutaraldehyde and distilled water presented similar absorbance curves. Regarding µTBS, all concentrations of propyl gallate resulted in statistically significant higher bond strength values than distilled water at 24 h. After 6 months of storage, propyl gallate 0.1% was the only group that maintained µTBS over time. Propyl gallate 0.1% might be a suitable dentinal pre-treatment due to being able to present chemical bonds with demineralized dentin and providing resin-dentin bond stability after 6 months of storage.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of four different strategies for bonding a CAD/CAM resin nanoceramic restoration (Lava Ultimate, 3M) to the dentin surface using a universal adhesive (Scotch Bond Universal, 3M) and adhesive resin cement (RelyX Ultimate, 3M) on the shear bond strength (SBS) and failure mode. The strategies comprised: (i) immediate sealing, immediate bonding; (ii) immediate sealing, bonding after 2 weeks with provisional restoration; (iii) immediate sealing with flowable resin composite reinforcement and bonding after 2 weeks with provisional restoration; and (iv) no immediate sealing, and bonding after 2 weeks with provisional restoration. After bonding, all the specimens were thermocycled, shear tests were performed using a universal testing machine, and failure modes were determined using stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy. The highest mean SBS was recorded with immediate sealing, immediate bonding strategy. Most adhesive failures with exposed dentinal tubules were noted in specimens exposed to bonding after 2 weeks with no immediate sealing, which was associated with the lowest SBS. Mixed failures predominated in all immediate dentin sealing groups. Immediate sealing with universal adhesives improves SBS, particularly in the single-visit approach, which has shown significantly better performance, whereas the provisional phase has a negative effect.

This study evaluated the effects of two chlorophyll derivatives, sodium copper chlorophyllin (Cu-Chl) and sodium iron chlorophyllin (Fe-Chl), on the bond strength between a self-curing luting agent (4-META/MMA-TBB resin) and dentin. Five aqueous primers containing 35% 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate with 0.007% Cu-Chl, 0.07% Cu-Chl, 0.007% Fe-Chl, 0.07% Fe-Chl, or neither Cu-Chl nor Fe-Chl (no-Chl) were prepared. The extracted human dentin surfaces were etched with 10% phosphoric acid (10PA), primed, and bonded to a resin block using the 4-META/MMA-TBB resin. A conventional etching agent (10-3) and 10PA without primer (PA/no-primer) were used as controls. The microtensile bond strength was determined after 48 h. The arithmetic medians for 20 stick specimens were calculated and statistically analyzed using a nonparametric Steel-Dwass test (α = 0.05). The maximum bond strength was achieved in the 0.007% Cu-Chl group, followed by those in the 0.07% Cu-Chl, 0.07% Fe-Chl, 10-3, 0.007% Fe-Chl, no-Chl, and PA/no-primer groups. No significant difference was observed between 0.007% Fe-Chl, 0.07% Fe-Chl, and 10-3. The bond strength to dentin etched with 10PA was influenced by the type and concentration of the chlorophyll derivatives applied. Cu-Chl rather than Fe-Chl should be useful as a component of surface treatment agents for bonding 4-META/MMA-TBB resin to dentin.

BACKGROUND This study evaluated the effects of milling (CADCAM), 3D printing, preparation taper angles (10-degree and 20-degree), auxiliary retentive features (groove and box), and provisional cement types (conventional and resin-based) on the adhesive failure stress of 3-mm short provisional crowns (PC). The research was motivated by the need to understand how digital dentistry technologies impact the retention and durability of provisional crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 160 working models (3D-printed) and PCs [80 milled (CopraTemp)/80 printed (Asiga)] were fabricated from two 10- and 20-degree typodont master models and two 20-degree 3D-printed master models (groove and box), simulating a 3 mm high all-ceramic short PC. After provisional cementation with conventional (Kerr TempBond) and resin-based (ProviTemp) cements, 16 subgroups (n=10 each) underwent thermocycling (10 000 cycles; 5-55°C) and pull-off tests on a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test. RESULTS Conventional cement failed at lower stress for milled (47.68 to 73.54) and printed (48.40 to 77.91) as compared to resin cement for milled (104.2 to 137.27) and printed (184.85 to 328.84), respectively, with significant differences. Increased taper and groove decreased failure load except for the printed PC/resin cement combination. Use of proximal box preparation increased retention significantly. Except for 20-degree taper cemented with conventional cement, the differences in auxiliary retentive features for milled and printed provisional crowns were statistically significant at P≤0.05. CONCLUSIONS 3D-printed PC, resin-based cement, 10-degree taper, and proximal box preparation were associated with higher retention than milled, conventional cements, 20-degree taper, and vertical groove.

BACKGROUND Modification of the glass fiber post (GFP) with titanium dioxide or silver particles can improve the durability and reliability of dental treatments for ensuring long-term success. This research assessed the tensile bond strength (TBS) of an adhesive system used for cementing GFPs into root dentin following the incorporation of nanoparticles of titanium dioxide (NTiO2) and silver (NAg). MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty human maxillary canines were prepared to create a 10-mm intra-radicular space for post placement from the cementoenamel junction. The specimens were randomly allocated into 2 groups (a non-thermocycling group and a thermocycling group). Each group was divided into 3 subgroups (10 samples each) according to the adhesive system used (adhesive system devoid of any addition, adhesive system including 1% NAg, and adhesive system infused with 1% NTiO2). TBS tests were conducted and recorded in MPa using a Universal Testing Machine, with an axial load applied at a rate of 0.5 mm/min until failure. The TBS for both groups (non-thermocycling and thermocycling) was measured in megapascals (MPa), and the failure type was recorded. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test with P.

BACKGROUND This study investigates the effect of artificial aging of direct resin nanohybrid composites on mean bond strength values for veneer ceramic samples. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ninety direct nanohybrid composite resin (Tetric N-Ceram) cylindrical discs were divided into 5 groups (n=18 each) based on aging cycles (thermocycling), as follows: TC=no aging (control), T1=850, T3=2500, T6=5000, and T12=10000 cycles, representing 1, 3, 6, and 12 months of clinical usage, respectively. Lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS e.max Press) cylindrical discs were cemented to resin discs using resin cement (Variolink N) after surface treatments (ceramic etching, silaning, composite abrasion). Differences in means between subgroups were calculated using one-way ANOVA, followed by the Tukey honestly significant differences post hoc test. Differences were considered statistically significant with a P value ≤0.05. RESULTS The highest SBS between ceramic and aged composite was observed at 1 month (m=20.35) but did not differ significantly from the control group (m=20.97). For all other subgroups (3, 6, 12 months) SBS was significantly less than that of the control (P≤0.05). At 1 and 3 months, cohesive failures were more common, whereas adhesive failures were more common in 6- and 12-month-old composites. CONCLUSIONS SBS of aged composites was less than that of non-aged composites, with SBS decreasing proportionally as the resin aged. When cementing a ceramic restoration over existing composite restorations, those older than 1 month should be removed and replaced with new ones.

Red-fluorescing dentine indicates bacterial contamination [Caries Res 2002; 36: 315-319]. We investigated effect of removal of red fluorescent dentine caries on shear bond strength and fracture mode of 4 adhesive approaches. Sixty-five carious teeth and 50 noncarious controls were distributed into 4 groups: Clearfil™ self-etch (CSE), OptiBond™ FL total etch (OTE), Scotchbond™ Universal total etch (STE) and self-etch (SSE). Samples were excited at 405 nm and viewed through 530 nm filter. Carious samples were ground flat exposing strongly red-fluorescing (StrongRF) dentine, on which a composite cylinder was placed, using one of 4 adhesives. After 22 h in water, shear bond strength and fracture mode were analysed. StrongRF was removed; composite cylinders were placed on weakly red-fluorescing (WeakRF) dentine and tested as described above. Finally, red-fluorescing dentine was removed, and composite cylinders were placed on non-fluorescing (NonRF) dentine and tested. Composites were placed at 3 corresponding heights in controls. After 22 h in water, shear bond strength testing and fracture mode analysis were performed. Differences were tested using Mann-Whitney or Wilcoxon tests (p ≤0.05). Median (Q1, Q3) shear bond strength on StrongRF was SSE 14.4 (9.2, 18.2) MPa >CSE 10.2 (6.4, 17.3) MPa >STE 9.1 (6.9, 11.2) MPa >OTE 6.8 (4.0, 10.8) MPa. Shear bond strength increased statistically significantly for all adhesives on WeakRF: SSE 19.8 (13.6, 24.3) MPa >STE 19.5 (12.7, 23.1) MPa >CSE 17.5 (12.0, 22.5) MPa >OTE 15.8 (11.9, 20.9) MPa. Only STE 25.6 (22.4, 29.1) MPa and CSE 22.1 (17.6, 24.6) MPa were significantly different on NonRF compared to WeakRF. For controls tested at corresponding depths, superficial shear bond strength was OTE 18.7 (16.0, 22.1) MPa >STE 18.4 (12.0, 25.9) MPa >CSE 18.1 (12.7, 20.7) MPa >SSE 13.0 (9.6, 17.8) MPa. This was significantly higher compared to StrongRF except for SSE. Central shear bond strength was not significantly different to WeakRF, deep shear bond strength was significantly lower for SSE and CSE but higher for OTE compared to carious. Conclusion: StrongRF dentine should be removed for higher shear bond strength, but WeakRF dentine can often be preserved without compromising adhesive bond strength.

This study aimed to investigate adhesive shear bond strength (SBS) on an ultrafine-grained niobium alloy (UFG-Nb) that is a potential dental implant material. SBS of three adhesive systems combined with three composites to UFG-Nb was compared to corresponding SBS to Ti-6Al-4V and to zirconia. Specimens of the substrates UFG-Nb, Ti-6Al-4V and zirconia with plane surfaces were sandblasted with Al2O3, cleaned and dried. Three adhesive systems (Futurabond U, Futurabond M + , Futurabond M + DCA; all VOCO GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany) were applied each on specimens of each substrate and light cured. One composite (BifixSE, BifixQM, GrandioSO; all VOCO GmbH) was applied and light cured resulting in 27 groups (n = 10) for all substrate-adhesive-composite-combinations. SBS was measured after 24 h of storage. To simulate aging equally prepared specimens underwent 5000 thermocycles before SBS measurement. There was no significant difference in SBS within the non-aged groups. Among the artificially aged groups, GrandioSO-groups showed a greater variance of SBS than the other composites. All significant differences of corresponding UFG-Nb-, Ti-6Al-4V- and zirconia-groups with same adhesive-composite-combination (ACC) were observed between UFG-Nb and zirconia or Ti-6Al-4V and zirconia but never between the two metallic substrates. The similarity between these materials might show in their adhesive bonding behavior. As there were no differences comparing corresponding groups prior to and after artificial aging, it can be concluded that aging does not affect SBS to UFG-Nb, Ti-6Al-4V and zirconia using the tested ACCs. Adhesive bonding of established ACCs to UFG-Nb is possible resulting in SBS comparable to those on Ti-6Al-4V and zirconia surfaces.

This study aimed to evaluate the microleakage of light-cured and self-cured adhesives on enamel surfaces selectively etched with Er, Cr: YSGG laser or 35% phosphoric acid. A total of 60 class V cavities were prepared 1 mm above the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ). The specimens were randomly divided into six groups. Group 1: Clearfil SE Bond with no conditioning, Group 2: Tokuyama Universal Bond with no conditioning, Group 3: Clearfil SE Bond conditioned with 35% phosphoric acid, Group 4: Tokuyama Universal Bond conditioned with 35% phosphoric acid, Group 5: Clearfil SE Bond conditioned with Er, Cr: YSGG laser and Group 6: Tokuyama Universal Bond conditioned with Er, Cr: YSGG laser. Microleakage was evaluated qualitatively (visually) and quantitatively (ImageJ). The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS V23 and submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon tests. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. In all evaluation methods, the microleakage scores exhibit significant differences (p*<0.001). Group 1 and Group 3 exhibited similar and lower microleakage values than the Group 5. In the occlusal margin, the microleakage values were similar in Group 2, Group 4, and Group 6, whereas in the gingival margin Group 4 showed significantly lower leakage compared to Group 2. Regardless of the etching protocols and adhesive systems used, less microleakage was observed on the occlusal surface than on the gingival surface. Phosphoric acid etching provides better results than laser etching for enamel surface treatment on both occlusal and gingival surfaces.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at comparing the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) and interfacial adaptation of a modern self-curing and a light-curing restorative bulk-fill composite to a conventional composite applied with the layering technique. METHODS: Forty-eight occlusal cavities were divided in three main groups (16/group) based on tested materials: (i) STELA, bulk-fill self-curing restorative (STELA, SDI Ltd.); (ii) 3 M-BULK, bulk-fill composite (Filtek One Bulk-Fill, 3 M Oral Care); and (iii) 3 M-CTR, a conventional composite (Filtek Supreme XTE, 3 M Oral Care). These were used in combination with their adhesives in self-etch (SE) or etch-and-rinse (ER) mode. Specimens stored in artificial saliva (24 h or 12 months) were evaluated for MTBS and fractography. The interfacial analysis was performed through confocal microscopy. ANOVA and Fisher's LSD post hoc tests were performed with a level of significance of 5%. RESULTS: All the tested materials applied in ER mode presented (24 h) greater bond strength than in SE mode. Although all materials showed a significant drop in the bond strength after prolonged storage, STELA showed the highest bonding performance and interfaces with few gaps. 3 M-BULK had the lowest bond strength and an interface with several voids and gaps. CONCLUSIONS: All materials were affected by interface degradation and bonding reduction over prolonged aging. However, their use in combination with adhesives applied in ER mode may offer greater immediate bonding performance. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The use of restorative light-curing bulk-fill composites may generate gaps at the bonding interface and voids. STELA may represent a suitable alternative to avoid such issues.

PURPOSE: The main aim of the present study was to carry out a scoping review on the differences in degree of conversion of monomers regarding several types resin cements, indirect restorative materials, and light-curing procedures used in dentistry. METHOD: A bibliographic review was performed on PubMed using the following search items: "degree of conversion" OR "filler" AND "resin cement" OR "inorganic cement" AND "organic" OR "radiopacity" OR "refractive" OR "transmittance" OR "type" AND "resin composite." The search involved articles published in English language within the last thirteen years. A research question has been formulated following the PICO approach as follow: "How different is the degree of conversion of monomers comparing several types of resin-matrix cements?". RESULTS: Within the 15 selected studies, 8 studies reported a high degree of conversion (DC) of the organic matrix ranging from 70 up to 90% while 7 studies showed lower DC values. Dual-cured resin-matrix cements revealed the highest mean values of DC, flexural strength, and hardness when compared with light- and self-polymerized ones. DC mean values of resin-matrix cements light-cured through a ceramic veneer with 0.4 mm thickness were higher (~ 83%) than those recorded for resin-matrix cements light-cured through a thicker ceramic layer of 1.5 mm (~ 77%). CONCLUSIONS: The highest percentage of degree of conversion of monomers was reported for dual-cured resin-matrix cements and therefore both chemical and light-induced pathways promoted an enhanced polymerization of the material. Similar degree of conversion of the same resin-matrix cement were recorded when the prosthetic structure showed a low thickness. On thick prosthetic structures, translucent materials are required to allow the light transmission achieving the resin-matrix cement. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The chemical composition of resin-matrix cements and the light-curing mode can affect the polymerization of the organic matrix. Thus, physical properties of the materials can vary leading to early clinical failures at restorative interfaces. Thus, the analysis of the polymerization pathways of resin-matrix cements is significantly beneficial for the clinical performance of the restorative interfaces.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the dentin bond performance of various resin luting cement (RLC) systems combined with universal adhesives in different luting strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three self-adhesive resin luting cements (SRLCs) were used with universal adhesives as primers. Twelve specimens per group were prepared to measure shear bond strength (SBS) under distinct luting strategies in etch-&-rinse and self-etch modes. Regarding luting strategies, the bonded specimens were categorized into four groups based on tooth primer application and the curing mode of the SRLC paste: (i) with light irradiation of the tooth primer (wL) + dual-cure mode (DC) of the SRLC paste, (ii) wL + self-cure mode (SC) of the SRLC paste, (iii) without light irradiation of the tooth primer (woL) + DC mode of the SRLC paste, and (iv) woL + SC mode of the SRLC paste. Specimens were also subjected to different storage conditions: 24 h in water (baseline condition) and 10,000 cycles of thermal cycling. RESULTS: Luting strategy, storage condition, and SRLC system type significantly influenced dentin SBS values in both etching modes. Notably, certain SRLCs exhibited significantly higher dentin SBS when the primer was light-irradiated compared with no primer irradiation. CONCLUSION: Most SRLCs demonstrated higher dentin bond strength with light-irradiated primers, suggesting potential enhancement of dentin bond performance via primer light irradiation.

OBJECTIVES: The first aim of this study was to determine whether there is a difference in degree of conversion (DC) of touch-cure cements polymerized by self-curing with adhesive or dual-curing under reduced light. The second aim was to compare interfacial adaptation of zirconia restoration cemented using touch-cure cements self-cured or dual-cured by reduced light. METHODS: The DC of touch-cure resin cements with adhesive was measured continuously using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Experimental groups differed depending on touch-cure cement. Each group had three subgroups of polymerization method. For subgroup 1, the DC was measured by self-curing. For subgroups 2 and 3, the DCs were measured by dual-curing with reduced light penetrating 3 mm and 1 mm zirconia blocks, respectively. For interfacial adaptation evaluation, Class I cavity was prepared on an extracted third molar, and zirconia restoration was fabricated. The restoration was cemented using the same cement. Groups and subgroups for interfacial adaptation were the same as those of the DC measurement. After thermo-cycling, interfacial adaptation at the tooth-restoration interface was evaluated using swept-source optical coherence tomography imaging. RESULTS: The DC of touch-cure cement differed depending on the measurement time, resin cement, and polymerization method (p < 0.05). Interfacial adaptation was different depending on the resin cement and polymerization method (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: For touch-cure cement, light-curing with higher irradiance presented a higher DC and superior interfacial adaptation than light-curing with lower irradiance or self-curing. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although some adhesives accelerate the self-curing of touch-cure cement, light-curing for touch-cure cement is necessary for zirconia cementation.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate the shear bond and flexural strength fatigue behavior of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (4YSZ) repaired using different resin composites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cylindric specimens of 4YSZ were obtained for the bond strength (Ø = 6 mm, 1.5 mm of thickness) and biaxial flexural strength (Ø = 15 mm, 1 mm of thickness) fatigue tests and divided into 3 groups according to the repair resin composite: EVO (nanohybrid), BULK (bulk-fill), and FLOW (flowable). The zirconia surface was air-abraded with alumina particles, a 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) primer was applied, and the resin composite was build-up over the zirconia. Fatigue shear bond strength and flexural fatigue strength tests were performed (n = 15). One-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests were carried out for both outcomes, besides scanning electron microscopy and finite element analysis. RESULTS: The repair material affected the fatigue shear bond strength of zirconia ceramic. The BULK group (18.9 MPa) depicted higher bond strength values than FLOW (14.8 MPa) (p = 0.04), while EVO (18.0 MPa) showed similar results to both groups. No effect was observed for the mechanical behavior (p = 0.53). The stress distribution was similar for all groups. CONCLUSION: The repair of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (4YSZ) ceramics with bulk-fill resin composites was the best option for high fatigue bond strength. However, the fatigue mechanical performance was similar regardless of the applied repair material. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The repair of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (4YSZ) monolithic restorations may be performed with nanohybrid and bulk-fill resin composites in order to promote longevity in the treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of the water glass treatment to penetrate zirconia and improve the bond strength of resin cement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Water glass was applied to zirconia specimens, which were then sintered. The specimens were divided into water-glass-treated and untreated zirconia (control) groups. The surface properties of the water-glass-treated specimens were evaluated using surface roughness and electron probe micro-analyser (EPMA) analysis. A resin cement was used to evaluate the tensile bond strength, with2 and without a silane-containing primer. After 24 h in water storage at 37 °C and thermal cycling, the bond strengths were statistically evaluated with t-test, and the fracture surfaces were observed using SEM. RESULTS: The water glass treatment slightly increased the surface roughness of the zirconia specimens, and the EPMA analysis detected the water glass penetration to be 50 µm below the zirconia surface. The application of primer improved the tensile bond strength in all groups. After 24 h, the water-glass-treated zirconia exhibited a tensile strength of 24.8 ± 5.5 MPa, which was significantly higher than that of the control zirconia (17.6 ± 3.5 MPa) (p < 0.05). After thermal cycling, the water-glass-treated zirconia showed significantly higher tensile strength than the control zirconia. The fracture surface morphology was mainly an adhesive pattern, whereas resin cement residue was occasionally detected on the water-glass-treated zirconia surfaces. CONCLUSION: The water glass treatment resulted in the formation of a stable silica phase on the zirconia surface. This process enabled silane coupling to the zirconia and improved the adhesion of the resin cement.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic activation of etch-and-rinse and self-etch adhesive systems on the bond strength of resin cement to irradiated root dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty human maxillary anterior teeth were distributed into 8 groups (n = 10), according to the type of adhesive system used (etch-and-rinse and self-etch), the ultrasonic activation of the adhesive systems, and the dentin condition (irradiated or non-irradiated - 70 Gy). Endodontic treatment was performed followed by fiberglass post-space preparation. After fiberglass posts' luting, the roots were transversely sectioned on dentin discs and submitted to the push-out bond strength test (0.5 mm/min). The fractured specimens were analyzed under a stereomicroscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for failure mode classification. One of the dentin discs was analyzed under SEM to evaluate the characteristics of the adhesive interface. RESULTS: Irradiated specimens had lower bond strength than non-irradiated specimens (P < 0.0001). Ultrasonic activation of both adhesive systems increased the bond strength of the resin cement to irradiated dentin (P < 0.0001). Radiotherapy significantly affected the failure mode in the middle (P = 0.024) and apical thirds (P = 0.032) (adhesive failure). CONCLUSION: Non-irradiated specimens had a more homogeneous adhesive interface. When ultrasonically activated, both adhesive systems showed a greater number of resinous tags, regardless of the dentin condition. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ultrasonic activation of adhesive systems is a feasible strategy to enhance fiberglass posts retention in oncological patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of four different photoactivation protocols (according to "photoactivated faces" - mesial/distal, cervical/incisal or center - and "photoactivation time" - 6-3 s) of a high-power photo activator (Valo Cordless®-Ultradent) on the shear bond strength (SBS) between metal brackets and dental enamel and on the degree of conversion (DC) of an orthodontic resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 40 bovine incisor crowns were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n = 10). The brackets were bonded with Transbond XT® resin using 4 protocols according to the "photoactivation protocol" factor (which was subdivided into photoactivated faces and photoactivation time): V3C = 3 s + center; V6C = 6 s + center; V3M3D = 3 s on mesial + 3 s on distal; V3C3I = 3 s on cervical + 3 s on incisal. All the samples were stored for 4 months (water,37ºC) and then subjected to a SBS test (100KgF,1 mm/min). 40 resin discs were made to evaluate the monomer degree of conversion. Data from the SBS and DC were assessed by One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%). Bond failures were analyzed according to the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) and evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis test (5%). RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference (p = 0.008) in the One-way ANOVA result for SBS values between all groups, but the protocols showed statistically similar results (p ≥ 0.05-Tukey's tests) concerning the photoactivated faces (V6C, V3M3D and V3C3I) and photoactivation time (V3C and V6C) factors individually. There was no statistically significant difference (p ≥ 0.05) in the One-way ANOVA result for DC values. CONCLUSION: The SBS and DC values will vary depending on the protocol applied. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: It is possible to maintain the bracket fixation quality with the use of a high-power LED photo activator associated with a shorter photoactivation time. However, it is assumed that not all types of protocols that might be applied will provide quality bonding, such as V3C, V3M3D and V3C3I, which may - depending on the SBS and DC values - affect the final treatment time, due to brackets debonding, or increase of possibility of damage to dental enamel during bracket removal. Clinical studies are suggested to confirm the hypotheses of this research.
