Morphological studies typically avoid using osteological samples that derive from captive animals because it is assumed that their morphology is not representative of wild populations. Rearing environments indeed differ between wild and captive individuals. For example, mechanical properties of the diets provided to captive animals can be drastically different from the food present in their natural habitats, which could impact cranial morphology and dental health. Here, we examine morphological differences in the maxillae of wild versus captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) given the prominence of this species in comparative samples used in human evolution research and the key role of the maxilla in such studies. Size and shape were analysed using three-dimensional geometric morphometric methods based on computed tomography scans of 94 wild and 30 captive specimens. Captive individuals have on average larger and more asymmetrical maxillae than wild chimpanzees, and significant differences are present in their maxillary shapes. A large proportion of these shape differences are attributable to static allometry, but wild and captive specimens still differ significantly from each other after allometric size adjustment of the shape data. Levels of shape variation are higher in the captive group, while the degree of size variation is likely similar in our two samples. Results are discussed in the context of ontogenetic growth trajectories, changes in dietary texture, an altered social environment, and generational differences. Additionally, sample simulations show that size and shape differences between chimpanzees and bonobos (Pan paniscus) are exaggerated when part of the wild sample is replaced with captive chimpanzees. Overall, this study confirms that maxillae of captive chimpanzees should not be included in morphological or taxonomic analyses when the objective is to characterise the species.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the thickness of acellular extrinsic fibre cementum (AEFC) at four root positions of anterior and posterior teeth with special focus on functional aspects. Furthermore, the correlations between cementum thickness and chronological age and sex are investigated. BACKGROUND: While numerous studies confirm continuous cementum apposition with age, masticatory forces as well as physiological and orthodontically induced tooth movements also have the potential to affect tooth cementum thickness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Undecalcified teeth were embedded in resin and transverse-sectioned in the cervical third of the root. Two sections per root were selected, and digital images at four positions were obtained (mesial, distal, oral, and vestibular) using light microscopy. The AEFC thickness of 99 teeth (anterior = 66, posterior = 33, male = 54, female = 45) were measured in both sections. The differences in mean values between root positions and the association of root position variation with tooth type, age, sex, and subject as well as the overall effects of age and sex were analysed using a mixed model. RESULTS: First incisors and canines showed the greatest mean AFEC thickness, in contrast to premolars which had the lowest values. Differences were found across the four root positions, with a pattern varying considerably between anterior and posterior teeth and between maxilla and mandible in the anterior teeth. An interaction between root position and subject pointed to the existence of an individual component in the variation of AEFC thickness across the four root positions. There was an age trend with an almost linear increase in cementum thickness of 1 µm per year. Overall, females tended to exhibit a significantly lesser AEFC thickness compared to males. CONCLUSIONS: Distinct differences in the pattern of thickness values across the four root positions in anterior and posterior teeth support the assumption that the AEFC is strongly affected by functional processes. In addition to sex-specific differences and age-related trends, the root position variation of AEFC thickness varies from individual to individual.

AIM: To assess the impact of the timing of soft-tissue augmentation (STA) on mean buccal bone changes following immediate implant placement (IPP) in the anterior maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with a failing tooth and intact buccal bone wall in the anterior maxilla (15-25) were enrolled in this randomized controlled trial. Following single IIP and socket grafting, they were randomly allocated to the control group (immediate STA performed during the same surgical procedure) or the test group (delayed STA performed 3 months later). Implants were placed with a surgical guide and immediately restored with an implant-supported provisional crown. Changes in bone dimensions were assessed using superimposed CBCT images taken prior to surgery and at 1-year follow-up. Clinical outcomes were registered at 1-year follow-up. RESULTS: Twenty patients were randomized to each group (control: 16 females, 4 males, mean age 57.6; test: 9 females, 11 males, mean age 54.2). Ten patients in the control group and 13 patients in the test group had a thick bone wall phenotype. Estimated marginal mean horizontal buccal bone loss at 1 mm below the implant shoulder was -0.553 and -0.898 mm for the control and test group, respectively. The estimated mean difference of 0.344 mm in favour of the control group was not significant (95% CI: -0.415 to 1.104; p = 0.363). Also at all other horizontal and vertical levels, no significant differences could be observed between the groups. The combination of socket grafting and STA enabled counteraction of any buccal soft-tissue loss (≥ 0 mm) at 1 mm below the implant shoulder in 82% of the patients in the control group and in 75% of the patients in the test group (p = 1.000). The clinical outcome was favourable in both groups, yet implants in the control group demonstrated slightly less marginal bone loss (median difference 0.20 mm; 95% CI: 0.00-0.44; p = 0.028). CONCLUSION: In patients with an intact and mainly thick buccal bone wall in the anterior maxilla, the timing of STA following IIP had no significant impact on mean buccal bone loss. OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical performance of single crowns in the posterior maxilla supported by either 11-mm long implants combined with maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) surgery or by 6-mm long implants during a 10-year follow-up period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were randomly allocated to receive one 11-mm long implant in combination MFSA or to receive one 6-mm long implant without any grafting. Twenty-one implants in 20 patients were placed in the 6-mm group and 20 implants in 18 patients were placed in the 11-mm group. Both groups were followed by clinical and radiographic examinations up to 10 years. Patients' satisfaction was also scored before treatment. RESULTS: Two patients died and eight patients moved during the follow-up. Two patients lost an implant in the 6-mm group and one implant was lost in the 11-mm group (implant survival 89.5% and 90.9%, respectively). From loading to 10 years' follow-up, mean ± SE marginal bone loss in the 6-mm group and 11-mm group was 0.18 ± 0.10 mm and 0.26 ± 0.12 mm, respectively, without a significant difference between the groups at 10 years (p = .650). In both groups, indices scores for plaque, calculus, gingiva and bleeding were low as well as mean pocket probing depth. Patients' satisfaction at 10 years was high in both groups; mean overall satisfaction in the 6-mm group and 11-mm group was 9.6 ± 0.6 and 9.2 ± 0.8, respectively (p = .168). CONCLUSIONS: Placement of 6-mm implants or 11-mm implants combined MFSA are equally successful during a 10-year follow-up period when applied for supporting a single restoration.

OBJECTIVES: Intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH) increases systemic bone mass. However, the effect of PTH on osseous and soft tissue healing around implants in osteoporosis patients remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of PTH on tissue healing around implants in ovariectomized rats and to compare systemic and intraoral administration routes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Implants were placed at the healed sites of ovariectomized rats 3 weeks after maxillary first molar extraction. Rats were randomly divided into two groups that received either daily systemic subcutaneous or local intraoral PTH administration. Maxillae were dissected to examine bone architectures with micro-computed tomography images. Histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses were performed to evaluate osseous and soft tissue healing around the implants. RESULTS: Regardless of the administration route, PTH significantly increased bone area and the numbers of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes in the first and second inside and outside areas of implant threads, in addition to decreasing the number of sclerostin+ osteocytes. However, the intraoral PTH administration route was superior to the systemic route by significantly improving bone quality and promoting collagen production in the connective tissue around implants. CONCLUSIONS: Parathyroid hormone administration promoted both osseous and soft tissue healing around implants, irrespective of administration route. Interestingly, intraoral administration improved the evaluated parameters more than systemic administration. Thus, the intraoral route could become a useful treatment strategy for implant treatment in osteoporosis patients.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate esthetic parameters in the anterior maxillary region by comparing single-piece zirconia versus titanium narrow-diameter implants. Additionally, clinical, radiological and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty implants (tissue level implant) were placed in 30 patients in the maxillary esthetic sector. Depending on randomization, a zirconia (test) or titanium implant (control) was placed. Esthetic, clinical, and radiological parameters, including the implant crown esthetic index (ICAI), pink esthetic score (PES), probing pocket depth, bleeding on probing, plaque index, and marginal bone levels, were evaluated at 12, 36 and 60 months after loading. RESULTS: Sixty months after crown placement, no significant differences were found between groups. The ICAI values were 5.25 ± 4.21 and 4.50 ± 2.98 for the test and control groups, respectively. The corresponding PES values were 7.44 ± 1.93 and 7.43 ± 1.74 for the test and control groups, respectively. There were no significant intergroup differences for the rest of the parameters evaluated. CONCLUSION: It can be suggested that monotype zirconia implants may serve as a potential alternative to titanium implants in selected clinical scenarios. While the results demonstrated comparable esthetic, clinical, and radiological aspects for zirconia implants as compared to titanium implants after a 5-year follow-up period, further research with larger sample sizes and longer-term follow-up is recommended.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the long-term outcomes of full-arch rehabilitation using immediate dental implant placement and continuous functional loading with full-fixed dental prostheses (FFDPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six patients received temporary implants (n = 327) at maxillary augmentation with calvarial bone. A provisional acrylic FFDP was immediately loaded onto these implants. After 6 months, the temporary implants were replaced with definitive implants (n = 326) and immediately loaded with a second provisional FFDP (N = 55). Subsequently, a baseline radiograph was taken following a 6-month healing period. The second bridge was then substituted with a definitive FFDP. Primary outcomes included peri-implant marginal bone level (MBL) and definitive implant survival. Secondary outcomes evaluated provisional implant and prostheses survival, complications, and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: The provisional implants had a survival rate of 97.9%. One patient was excluded from further analysis due to loss of temporary implants and first FFDP. The definitive implant survival rate after 10 years was 92.2%, with a moderate but significant decrease in MBL between baseline radiography and 10 years later (-0.08 ± 0.18 vs. -0.24 ± 0.44). However, large individual variations were observed, with 65.8% of implants showing no bone loss and 9.2% showing loss ≥0.5 mm. Sinusitis was experienced by 14.3% of patients upon surgery. Patient satisfaction was high or reported no issues after protocol completion (80%). One patient lost all six definitive implants and definitive FFDP 8.2 years after implant placement. CONCLUSIONS: The described protocol can be regarded as a long-term, highly successful method for full-arch rehabilitation of atrophied maxillae while enabling continuous masticatory and speaking functionality.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the esthetic outcome, as well as clinical, radiographic, and volumetric tissue alterations 1 year after immediate implant placement (IIP) with connective tissue grafting (CTG) versus dual-zone concept (DZ) at sites with thin labial bone in the esthetic zone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized clinical trial included 30 patients treated with IIP simultaneous with either CTG or DZ (n = 15 each). Pink esthetic score (PES) was assessed 6 months after crown placement as the primary outcome. Amount of bone labial to the implant, labio-palatal ridge reduction, and crestal bone changes were measured via CBCT after 1 year. Volumetric analysis of linear labial soft tissue contour, interdental, and mid-facial soft tissue level changes, and total volume loss (mm3) were measured after 1 year. RESULTS: Similar PES was observed in the CTG (12.53 ± 1.13) and DZ (12.13 ± 1.55) groups, with no significant difference (p = 0.42). Likewise, there were no statistically significant differences found between the two groups in labio-palatal bone reduction (mm&%), interdental papillae, and mid-facial gingival levels (p > 0.05). However, the mean vertical crestal bone changes in the CTG and DZ groups were -1.1 ± 0.6 mm and 0.2 ± 1.0 mm, respectively, with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.0002). Moreover, CTG revealed less linear and total volume (mm3) loss in the labial soft tissue which was statistically significant compared to DZ (p = 0.007). CONCLUSION: Both groups demonstrated the same PES, nevertheless, volumetric analysis revealed twice total labial volume loss in DZ compared to CTG. It might be concluded that the use of CTG with IIP caused less horizontal reduction in the supra-implant complex compared to the DZ.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the radiological and histological outcome after horizontal guided bone regeneration (GBR) with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) alone or in combination with particulate autogenous bone (PAB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen edentulous patients with an alveolar ridge of ≤4 mm were included in this split-mouth randomized controlled trial. Horizontal GBR with a graft composition of 100% DBBM (100:0) on one side and 90% DBBM and 10% PAB (90:10) on the other side were conducted in all patients. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was obtained preoperatively, immediately postoperative, and after 10 months of healing. Width and volumetric changes in the alveolar process were measured on CBCT. Implants were placed after 10 months of graft healing where biopsies were obtained for histomorphometrical evaluation. RESULTS: The gained widths were 4.9 (±2.4) mm (100:0) and 4.5 (±2.0) mm (90:10) at 3 mm from the top of the crest, and 5.6 (±1.3) mm (100:0) and 4.6 (±2.1) mm (90:10) at 6 mm from the top of the crest. The mean volumetric reductions were 32.8% (±23.8) (100:0) and 38.2% (±23.2) (90:10). Histomorphometry revealed that mean percentages of bone were 50.8% (±10.7) (100:0) and 46.4% (±11.3) (90:10), DBBM were 31.6% (±12.6) (100:0) and 35.4% (±14.8) (90:10), and non-mineralized tissue were 17.6% (±11.7; 100:0) and 18.2% (±18.2) (90:10). No significant differences were evident between in any evaluated parameters. CONCLUSIONS: There were no additional effects of adding PAB to DBBM regarding bone formation, width changes, or volumetric changes after 10 months of graft healing.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze changes in bone dimensions and their modulating factor in bone dimensions 6 months after horizontal ridge augmentation using autogenous bone grafts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with horizontally atrophic alveolar ridges of a single edentulous tooth at the maxillary anterior site were divided into two groups based on the fixation position of the bone block during ridge augmentation surgery (H0, vertical distance from the upper edge of the bone block to the alveolar crest). Patients were classified into a crestal level (CL) group if H0 ≤ 1 mm and a sub-crestal level (SCL) group if H0 > 1 mm. The width and height of the alveolar ridge were recorded using CBCT both before and 6 months after the augmentation procedure. RESULTS: The CL group comprised 20 patients with 23 implants, whereas the SCL group comprised 18 patients with 22 implants. All the augmentation sites exhibited vertical bone resorption. Vertical bone resorption in the SCL group (1.94 ± 2.11 mm) was significantly higher than that of the CL group (0.61 ± 0.64 mm). The SCL group showed significantly lower horizontal bone gain than the CL group (SCL: 1.02 ± 2.30 mm; CL: 3.19 ± 3.17 mm) at the cervical level. Peri-implant marginal bone loss increased significantly in the SCL group (1.00 ± 2.71 mm) compared to the CL group (0.64 ± 0.40 mm). CONCLUSION: The bone height decreased after horizontal ridge augmentation using autogenous onlay grafting. The fixation position of the bone block was a modulating factor. The SCL group showed more vertical bone loss, less horizontal bone gain 6 months after surgery, and more marginal bone loss after restoration.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the morphological characteristics of the anterior maxillary nasopalatine canal and the width of the buccal bone using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in 150 adults in Northern Cyprus. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 150 participants, and their anterior maxillary morphometric measurements (eg, length of the nasopalatine canal and anteroposterior diameter of the nasal foramen) were taken using CBCT with the scanning parameters of 90 kvP, 24 s, 4 mA, voxel size 0.3 mm, and field of view 10×6 cm. The shapes of the nasopalatine canal (NPC) were categorized into 4 types: cylindrical, hourglass, funnel-shaped, and banana (54%, 20.6%, 18.6%, and 4%, respectively). RESULTS The findings showed a clear link between the shape of the NPC and the horizontal dimensions of the anterior maxilla's morphometric properties. In general, decreased horizontal bone dimensions were found in the premaxilla at the banana- and funnel-shaped type for the nasopalatine canal. Also, the anteroposterior diameter of a nasal foramen in the hourglass shape was significantly larger in diameter than all other shapes. Additionally, the morphology of the nasopalatine canal is influenced by its shape. The sagittal cross-section has shown significant correlations with the sizes of the incisive foramen, nasal foramen, and the length of the nasopalatine canal. CONCLUSIONS The study found a correlation between the shape of the NPC and the horizontal dimensions of the anterior maxilla's anatomy. The measurements of NPC in a North Cyprus population slightly differ from the established standards found in the existing literature. Conducting more extensive studies with a larger number of CBCT images will offer additional insights.

BACKGROUND The greater palatine foramen (GPF) is anatomically located distal to the third maxillary molar tooth, midway between the midline of the palate and the dental arch. The GPF contains the major palatine artery, vein, and nerve, traversing the palatine sulcus. This study aimed to evaluate the anatomical position of the GPF in 93 women and 67 men at a single center in Cyprus using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on 160 CBCT scans. Measurements of the GPF's horizontal and vertical diameters, distances from GPF to the incisive foramen, posterior nasal spine, anterior nasal spine, and midaxillary suture, and positional relationships to molars were recorded. Statistical analyses compared these measurements between males and females. RESULTS The study included 93 females and 67 males with an average age of 46.6 (±11.6) years. Significant sex differences were observed in most GPF measurements, with males showing larger dimensions such as the anterior nasal spine, posterior nasal spine, mid-maxillary suture, and incisive foramen to the GPF. The GPF was predominantly located in the third molar region (96.25% on the right, 96.9% on the left). The left GPF showed a significantly larger horizontal diameter than the right (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS There was a significant difference in the average distances from the anterior nasal spine, posterior nasal spine, mid-maxillary suture, and incisive foramen to the GPF, as well as in the size of the GPF, between males and females. Recognizing these variations enhances clinical planning and reduces the risk of complications.

RESUMEN

The nasopalatine canal (NPC), an interosseous conduit in the anterior maxilla, plays a crucial role in various dental procedures, such as implant placement, orthodontics, and surgical interventions. Accurate anatomical characterization of the NPC is essential to avoid complications, as its morphometric variations can impact the nasopalatine nerve and vascular structures within the canal. Traditional radiography techniques are limited in displaying the canal's detailed anatomy due to issues like magnification and distortion. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), with its superior imaging quality and reduced radiation exposure, has become the preferred method for NPC evaluation. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the published literature on the variations in anatomy and dimensions of the NPC using CBCT. A complete literature search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and ProQuest electronic databases. The following keywords were used alone or combined: CBCT, measurements [(nasopalatine canal length), (incisive foramen), (foramina of Stenson), (buccal bone plate), gender, plane as (oblique measurements), or (sagittal or axial). Papers were manually searched utilizing their reference titles. Research selection was restricted to the time of publication but not to the type of tested publication from different countries or sex and NPC parameter measurements. Fourteen full-length papers were included. Parameters like NPC length and diameters of incisive foramen (IF) and foramina of Stenson (FS) were generally higher in males than females, with significant differences noted across most studies. NPC dimensions are influenced by sex, with males typically exhibiting larger measurements. Additionally, NPC dimensions vary among different populations.

BACKGROUND This retrospective study from a single center in Cyprus aimed to assess labial (buccal) and palatal bone thickness in 6 anterior maxillary teeth of 120 adults using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS The CBCT scans of 120 patients (720 teeth) were examined, with scanning parameters of 90 kvP, 24 s, 4 mA, voxel size 0.3 mm, and field of view of 10×6 cm. All maxillary incisors were categorized into 3 distinct points in terms of buccal (B) and palatal (P) points, with points B1 (buccal) and P1 (palatal) 4 mm below the cementoenamel junction; points B2 and P2 at the midpoint between the labial and palatal alveolar crest plane extending to the root apex; and points B3 and P3 at the root apex. Evaluation was done by measuring the distance from these points to the labial and palatal alveolar bone. RESULTS When the thicknesses were measured between all 6 points and labial and palatal bone, the thickness of point B3 of tooth 13 in men was significantly higher than that in women. At points P1, P2, and P3 for teeth 11 and 13, the palatal bone thickness of men was significantly higher than that of women. At points P2 and P3 of tooth 12, the palatal bone thickness of men was significantly higher than that of women. CONCLUSIONS The study found a correlation between alveolar bone thickness and patient sex in the North Cyprus population. Alveolar bone thickness in the anterior maxillary should be considered in implant treatment and orthodontic techniques.

BACKGROUND The nasopalatine canal (NPC), or incisive canal, is located in the midline of the palate, posterior to the maxillary central incisors. Its anatomy is important in prosthetic dentistry procedures. This study aimed to assess the anatomical morphology of the NPC according to age, sex, and dental status using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in 335 patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective cross-sectional study, a total of 335 patients were recruited and categorized according to sex, age, and dental status. Individual CBCT images were analyzed in the sagittal, coronal, and axial planes. Also, we recorded the dimensions and morphological shape of the NPC and adjacent buccal bone plate (BBP) under standardized conditions. The associations between sex, age group, NPC shapes and types, and presence of central incisors were assessed. A significance level was set at P<0.05. RESULTS Mean labio-palatal and mediolateral measurements of the incisive foramen were 5.13±1.45 mm and 3.21±0.96 mm, whereas the mean diameter of Stenson foramen was 2.57±1.25 mm, and the total length of the NPC was 11.79±2.50 mm. Funnel, Y, and round-shaped canals were the most prevalent shapes of the NPC in sagittal, coronal, and axial planes. BBP was greater in men, with P=0.011, P=0.000, and P=0.001 at BBP1, BBP2, and BBP3, respectively. CONCLUSIONS NPC and BBP parameter values were slightly higher among male patients. NPC parameters increased with older age. The crest width of BBP decreased with older age and after missing maxillary central incisor teeth.

BACKGROUND Understanding the root canal morphology is important for successful endodontic treatment. This retrospective cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) study aimed to compare the adult maxillary premolars (MP), root, and canal morphology among a Saudi Arabian subpopulation based on Vertucci and Ahmed classifications. MATERIAL AND METHODS Scans of 1336 MP - 656 first premolars (MFP) and 680 second premolars (MSP) - were analyzed for the number of roots, morphology of the canals, and symmetry among them. The data were grouped based on the traditional preestablished Vertucci system and newer instantaneous code-based Ahmed classification. Comparative analysis was done using the chi-square test. RESULTS Two roots were common in MFP with 84.4% of the population, followed by those with 1 root and those with 3 roots. In MSP, single roots were more common. The results were non-significant with P values of 0.859 and 0.471, respectively. Most of these MFP had Type IV Vertucci configuration/²TNB¹P¹ Ahmed et al code (TN-tooth number, B-buccal canal, P-palatal canal). In MSP, Type I Vertucci/¹TN¹ Ahmed et al code was most common. However, the results were not statistically significant for the PM with P values of 0.997 and 0.732, respectively. Sex-based difference among them for the roots and root canals was also non-significant. Symmetry among PM in opposite quadrants was 87.1% in MFP and 90% in MSP. CONCLUSIONS Two roots with Type IV (²TNB¹P¹) and 1 root with Type I (¹TN¹) were most common in MFP and MSP, respectively. Symmetry among opposing PM was high.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anatomical characteristics of patients with unilateral impacted canine teeth compared to a control group. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) records were retrospectively analyzed. MATERIAL AND METHODS CBCT records of 64 patients with unilateral impacted canine teeth (57.8% female and 42.2% male) and 64 controls (59.4% female and 40.6% male) were retrospectively analyzed. On the CBCT images, intermolar width, arch length, arch perimeter, palatal width in the molar region at cementoenamel junction, palatal width in the molar region at the crest, palatal width in the molar region measured from mid-root level, nasal cavity width, and palatal depth were evaluated. RESULTS In the palatal width measurement from the mid-root variable, the measurement of labially positioned canines was significantly lower than the control group (P<0.05). In terms of intermolar width, the labial positioned impacted canines' values were lower than in the control group. There was a significant difference in terms of the perimeter variable and both palatinally and labially positioned impacted canines were significantly lower than in the control group (P<0.05). All parameters were compared according to sex, and measurements of male patients were significantly higher than in female patients (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS A labially impacted canine was strongly linked to a decrease in mid-root palatal and intermolar widths. Additionally, impacted canines positioned both palatally and labially were found to result in a reduced arch perimeter. Moreover, male patients with impacted canines exhibited notably greater anatomical measurements compared to female patients.

AIM: The present study was designed to compare, on cone-beam computed tomography imaging, the skeletal and dental effects of the SARPE (Surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion) and MISMARPE (Minimally Invasive Surgical and Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample of adult patients with transverse maxillary deficiency (TMD) was divided into two groups, and scans were obtained preoperatively (T0) and immediately after completion of expansion (T1). The posterior and anterior linear transverse distances of the maxilla and the angulation of the maxillary first molars were evaluated. The data were entered into a generalized estimating equations model to verify the postoperative effects of the different techniques. RESULTS: None of the techniques caused any appreciable change in the angulation of the molars. The skeletal changes were similar, with significantly greater gains in the nasal fossa and intermaxillary distance when using the MISMARPE. CONCLUSION: The technique can be an effective and lower morbidity alternative to SARPE.

OBJECTIVE: To compare changes in the maxillary posterior structure as seen in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images resulting from facemask therapy using skeletal (miniplate/FM) anchorage versus tooth-borne anchorage (RME/FM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 20 patients divided into the miniplate/FM group (nine patients aged 9.5 ± 1.4 years) and the RME/FM group (11 patients aged 9.2 ± 1.4 years). CBCT images before and after facemask therapy were evaluated to assess changes in the maxillary posterior structure. RESULTS: The miniplate/FM group had greater advancement of the maxilla and midface compared to the RME/FM group (p < .05). Specifically, there was about three times more advancement of the pterygomaxillary suture in the miniplate/FM group than in the RME/FM group (p < .05). Moreover, the advancement of the pterygomaxillary suture was about half the advancement of A point in the miniplate/FM group, while only about 25% in the RME/FM group. Finally, the miniplate/FM group showed an increase in the transverse dimension of the posterior and superior parts of the maxilla (p < .05). CONCLUSION: There was greater forward movement of the pterygomaxillary suture with facemask therapy using the skeletal anchorage compared to tooth-borne anchorage, leading to a more significant advancement of the maxilla and midface.

INTRODUCTION: Palatal displacement of maxillary anterior teeth is common in clinical practice. Previous studies have reported that the labial bone around palatally-displaced incisors is thinner than that around normally-placed teeth. Therefore, it is necessary to elucidate alveolar bone changes after alignment to guide orthodontic treatment. In this study, we investigated the alveolar bone changes around palatally-displaced maxillary lateral incisors before and after treatment, and the effects of extraction and age using cone-beam computed tomography. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 55 patients with unilateral palatally-displaced maxillary lateral incisors were included. Three-dimensional alveolar bone changes were measured at three levels (25%, 50% and 75% of the root length) using cone-beam computed tomography. Group comparisons were made between displaced and control teeth, extraction and non-extraction groups, and adult and minor groups. RESULTS: After orthodontic treatment, labiopalatal and palatal alveolar bone widths decreased at all measured levels. Labial alveolar bone width increased significantly at P25, but decreased at P75. Concavity decreased, while tooth-axis angle, tooth length, B-CEJ and P-CEJ increased. Changes in LB and LP at P75, B-CEJ and P-CEJ were statistically significant. After treatment, the tooth-axis angle on the PD side increased by 9.46°. The change in tooth-axis angle on the PD side was significantly smaller, and LB and LP decreased more at P75, in the extraction group. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the control teeth, alveolar bone thickness and height for the displaced teeth decreased more significantly after treatment. Tooth extraction and age also influenced alveolar bone changes.
