RESUMO

The rapid advancements in nanotechnology in the field of nanomedicine have the potential to significantly enhance therapeutic strategies for cancer treatment. There is considerable promise for enhancing the efficacy of cancer therapy through the manufacture of innovative nanocomposite materials. Metallic nanoparticles have been found to enhance the release of anticancer medications that are loaded onto them, resulting in a sustained release, hence reducing the dosage required for drug administration and preventing their buildup in healthy cells. The combination of nanotechnology with biocompatible materials offers new prospects for the development of advanced therapies that exhibit enhanced selectivity, reduced adverse effects, and improved patient outcomes. Chitosan (CS), a polysaccharide possessing distinct physicochemical properties, exhibits favorable attributes for controlled drug delivery due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. Chitosan nanocomposites exhibit heightened stability, improved biocompatibility, and prolonged release characteristics for anticancer medicines. The incorporation of gold (Au) nanoparticles into the chitosan nanocomposite results in the manifestation of photothermal characteristics, whereas the inclusion of silver (Ag) nanoparticles boosts the antibacterial capabilities of the synthesized nanocomposite. The objective of this review is to investigate the recent progress in the utilization of Ag and Au nanoparticles, or a combination thereof, within a chitosan matrix or its modified derivatives for the purpose of anticancer drug delivery. The research findings for the potential of a chitosan nanocomposite to deliver various anticancer drugs, such as doxorubicin, 5-Fluroacil, curcumin, paclitaxel, and 6-mercaptopurine, were investigated. Moreover, various modifications carried out on the chitosan matrix phase and the nanocomposite surfaces to enhance targeting selectivity, loading efficiency, and pH sensitivity were highlighted. In addition, challenges and perspectives that could motivate further research related to the applications of chitosan nanocomposites in cancer therapy were summarized.

RESUMO

Metal-organic frameworks are porous polymeric materials formed by linking metal ions with organic bridging ligands. Metal-organic frameworks are used as sensors, catalysts for organic transformations, biomass conversion, photovoltaics, electrochemical applications, gas storage and separation, and photocatalysis. Nonetheless, many actual metal-organic frameworks present limitations such as toxicity of preparation reagents and components, which make frameworks unusable for food and pharmaceutical applications. Here, we review the structure, synthesis and properties of cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks that could be used in bioapplications. Synthetic methods include vapor diffusion, microwave-assisted, hydro/solvothermal, and ultrasound techniques. The vapor diffusion method can produce cyclodextrin-based metal-organic framework crystals with particle sizes ranging from 200 nm to 400 µm. Applications comprise food packaging, drug delivery, sensors, adsorbents, gas separation, and membranes. Cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks showed loading efficacy of the bioactive compounds ranging from 3.29 to 97.80%.

RESUMO

A novel eco-friendly adsorbent was fabricated by mixing mushroom-derived cadmium sulfide and polyethyleneimine-functionalized biochar that was fabricated from coffee waste with a chitosan biopolymer. The green-synthesized CdS/PEI-BC/CTS composite was analyzed using several characterization methods to identify its morphological, compositional, and structural characteristics. In addition, the adsorption property of the composite was investigated for hexavalent chromium as a model for anionic heavy metals. The best adsorption conditions to efficiently adsorb Cr(vi) onto CdS/PEI-BC/CTS were scrutinized in the batch mode. The experimental results elucidated that the higher adsorption efficacy for Cr(vi) was 97.89% at pH = 3, Cr(vi) concentration = 50 mg L-1, CdS/PEI-BC/CTS dose = 0.01 g, and temperature = 20 °C. The impact of co-interfering anionic species on Cr(vi) adsorption was identified in simulated wastewater. The recycling property of the CdS/PEI-BC/CTS composite was assessed for ten runs to ensure the applicability of the green composite. The adsorption mechanism and interaction types were proposed on the basis of kinetic and isotherm studies, along with analysis tools. The mechanistic study proposed that the Cr(vi) adsorption onto CdS/PEI-BC/CTS occurred via chemical and physical pathways, including protonation, electrostatic interactions, reduction, and coordination bonds.

RESUMO

Eco-friendly and renewable composite beads were constructed for efficient adsorptive removal of Cr (VI) ions. Attapulgite (ATP) clay decorated with cetylpyridinium bromide (CPBr) was impregnated into cellulose acetate (CA) beads, which were formulated through a simple and cost-effective solvent-exchange approach. FTIR, XRD, SEM, Zeta potential, and XPS characterization tools verified the successful formation of ATP-CPBr@CA beads. The composite beads displayed a spherical and porous shape with a positively charged surface (26.6 mV) at pH 2. In addition, higher adsorption performance was accomplished by ATP-CPBr@CA composite beads with ease of separation compared to their components. Meanwhile, equilibrium isotherms pointed out that the Langmuir model was optimal for describing the adsorption process of Cr (VI) with a maximal adsorption capacity of 302 mg/g. Moreover, the D-R isotherm model verified the physical adsorption process, while adsorption data obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Further, XPS results hypothesized that the removal mechanism involves adsorption via electrostatic interactions, redox reaction, and co-precipitation. Interestingly, the ATP-CPBr@CA composite beads reserved tolerable adsorption characteristics with a maximum removal present exceeding 70% after reuse for seven successive cycles, proposing its feasible applicability as a reusable and easy-separable candidate for removing heavy metals from aquatic bodies.

RESUMO

Since enormous amounts of antibiotics are consumed daily by millions of patients all over the world, tons of pharmaceutical residuals reach aquatic bodies. Accordingly, our study adopted the Fenton catalytic degradation approach to conquer such detrimental pollutants. (Ce0.33Fe) MIL-88A was fabricated by the hydrothermal method; then, it was supported on the surface of g-C3N4 sheets using the post-synthetic approach to yield a heterogeneous Fenton-like (Ce0.33Fe) MIL-88A/10%g-C3N4 catalyst for degrading the tetracycline hydrochloride drug. The physicochemical characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed using FT-IR, SEM-EDX, XRD, BET, SEM, and XPS. The pH level, the H2O2 concentration, the reaction temperature, the catalyst dose, and the initial TC concentration were all examined as influencing factors of TC degradation efficiency. Approximately 92.44% of the TC was degraded within 100 min under optimal conditions: pH = 7, catalyst dosage = 0.01 g, H2O2 concentration = 100 mg/L, temperature = 25 °C, and TC concentration = 50 mg/L. It is noteworthy that the practical outcomes revealed how the Fenton-like process and adsorption work together. The degradation data were well-inspected by first-order and second-order models to define the reaction rate. The synergistic interaction between the (Ce0.33Fe) MIL-88A/10%g-C3N4 components produces a continuous redox cycle of two active metal species and the electron-rich source of g-C3N4. The quenching test demonstrates that •OH is the primary active species for degrading TC in the H2O2-(Ce0.33Fe) MIL-88A/10%g-C3N4 system. The GC-MS spectrum elucidates the yielded intermediates from degrading the TC molecules.

RESUMO

The adsorptive removal of amphoteric antibiotics like doxycycline (DOX) is a difficult task because of the electrostatic repulsion between these amphoteric molecules and adsorbents. For this purpose, a zwitter adsorbent was fabricated by incorporating zwitter ZIF-67/MIL-88A binary MOF into the matrix of alginate (Alg); in addition, the surface of the beads was modified by polydopamine (PDA). The batch experiments implied the super-high adsorption efficacy of ZIF-67/MIL-88A@Alg@PDA toward DOX attained 384.61 ±â€¯5.08 mg/g at a neutral pH medium, 25 °C, and using 0.02 g. The isotherm analysis implied the physisorption of DOX onto ZIF-67/MIL-88A@Alg@PDA, while the kinetic analysis denoted the chemisorption of DOX. The results of XPS, Zeta potential, and Lab experiments identified the types of physical and chemical interactions between ZIF-67/MIL-88A@Alg@PDA and DOX. The durability of the ZIF-67/MIL-88A@Alg@PDA beads was inspected by the recycling test, clarifying that the DOX adsorption aptitude declined by 12.22 mg/g. In addition, the measured leaching concentrations of cobalt and iron from leaching test were 0.008 and 0.098 mg/L. The ionic strength of ZIF-67/MIL-88A@Alg@PDA, implying an enhancement in the DOX removal (%) from 83.51 to 93.50 % by raising the NaCl concentration from 0.2 to 1.0 mol/L. Therefore, our study could provide a simple procedure to overcome the electrostatic repulsion that retard the adsorption process of the amphoteric drugs onto charged adsorbents with positive or negative charges. Additionally, this procedure could also generate an electrostatic interaction between the zwitter adsorbents and the amphoteric drugs at specific pH media when they are in a zwitterionic nature.

RESUMO

Worldwide industrialization has grown at a rapid pace, contaminating water resources, particularly with phenolic pollutants that pose a risk to aquatic systems and human health. The goal of this study is to create an inexpensive magnetic composite that can effectively remove nitrophenol (o-NP) using adsorptive means. In this instance, a nonanyl chitosan (N-Cs) derivative was synthesized and then combined with activated petroleum coke (AP-coke) and magnetic Fe3O4 to boost its adsorbability towards o-NP and to facilitate its separation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and zeta potential were employed to characterize the magnetic composite. The experimental results indicated that the Fe3O4/AP-coke/N-Cs composite possesses a greater affinity toward o-NP with a maximal efficiency reached 88% compared to 22.8, 31.2, and 45.8% for Fe3O4, AP-coke and N-Cs, respectively. The equilibrium adsorption data coincided with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 291.55 mg/g at pH 6, whereas the pseudo second order kinetic model offered the best fit to the experimental data. Besides, the developed adsorbent preserved satisfactory adsorption characteristics after reuse for five successive cycles. The proposed adsorption mechanism involves the H-bonding, π-π interaction, hydrophobic interactions and electron donor-acceptor interactions. These findings hypothesize that the constructed magnetic composite could efficiently remove nitrophenols from polluted water with high performance and ease-separation.

RESUMO

A novel flower-like CuNiMn-LDH was synthesized and modified, to obtain a promising Fenton-like catalyst, Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH, with a remarkable degradation of Congo red (CR) utilizing H2O2 oxidant. The structural and morphological characteristics of Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH were analyzed via FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM-EDX, and SEM spectroscopy. In addition, the magnetic property and the surface's charge were defined via VSM and ZP analysis, respectively. Fenton-like experiments were implemented to investigate the aptness conditions for the Fenton-like degradation of CR; pH medium, catalyst dosage, H2O2 concentration, temperature, and the initial concentration of CR. The catalyst exhibited supreme degradation performance for CR to reach 90.9% within 30 min at pH 5 and 25 °C. Moreover, the Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH/H2O2 system revealed considerable activity when tested for different dyes since the degradation efficiencies of CV, MG, MB, MR, MO, and CR were 65.86, 70.76, 72.56, 75.54, 85.99, and 90.9%, respectively. Furthermore, the kinetic study elucidated that the CR degradation by the Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH/H2O2 system obeyed pseudo-first-order kinetic model. More importantly, the concrete results deduced the synergistic effect between the catalyst components, producing a continuous redox cycle consisting of five active metal species. Eventually, the quenching test and the mechanism study proposed the predominance of the radical mechanism pathway on the Fenton-like degradation of CR by the Fe3O4@ZIF-67/CuNiMn-LDH/H2O2 system.

RESUMO

This study intended to fabricate a novel Fenton-like catalyst by supporting the rod-like MIL-88A and the magnetic tin ferrite nanoparticles (SnFe2O4) on the MXene sheets (MIL-88A/SnFe2O4@MXene). The well fabrication and determination of the MIL-88A/SnFe2O4@MXene properties were investigated using SEM, XPS, VSM, Zeta potential, XRD, and FTIR tools. The Fenton-like degradation reaction of CR by MIL-88A/SnFe2O4@MXene was thoroughly studied to identify the optimal proportions of the catalyst components, the impact of CR and H2O2 concentrations, as well as the effect of raising the temperature and the pH medium of the catalytic system and the catalyst dosage. Kinetics studies were executed to analyze the decomposition of CR and H2O2 using First-order and Second-order models. Furthermore, the degradation mechanism was proposed based on the scavenging test that proceeded in the presence of chloroform and t-butanol, in addition to the XPS analysis that clarified the participation of the containing metal species: Fe, Sn, and Ti, and the formation of a continual redox cycle. The obtained intermediates during the CR degradation were defined by GC-MS. A recyclability test was performed on MIL-88A/SnFe2O4@MXene during five runs of the Fenton-like degradation of CR molecules. Finally, the novel MIL-88A/SnFe2O4@MXene Fenton-like catalyst could be recommended as a propitious heterogeneous catalyst with a continuous redox cycle and a recyclability merit.

RESUMO

The aggravated problem of lead pollution, especially in aquatic environments, necessitates the development of eminent adsorbents that could radically solve this environmental problem. Hence, a new composite was constructed based on iota carrageenan (i.Carr), graphene oxide (GO) and magnetite (Fe3O4) for removing noxious Pb2+ ions. The GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr composite was characterized by VSM, SEM, XPS, XRD, FTIR and Zeta potential. The removal of Pb2+ ions attained a quick equilibrium of almost 30 min with a removal efficiency reaching 93.68 %. The removal of Pb2+ was boosted significantly, in the order of GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(1:1) > GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(1:3) > GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(3:1). Moreover, acquired experimental data fitted the pseudo 2nd order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model with a maximal monolayer adsorption capacity reached 440.05 mg/g. Notably, after five adsorption runs, the composite maintained its removal efficiency exceeding 74 %. The assumed adsorption mechanisms of Pb2+ onto GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr were complexation, precipitation, Lewis acid-base, and electrostatic attraction forces. Overall, the GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr composite elucidated the auspicious adsorbent criteria, comprising fast adsorption with high performance, ease-separation and tolerable recyclability, advising its feasible use to decontaminate water bodies from hazardous heavy metals.

RESUMO

Water pollution is a dreadful affair that has incessantly aggravated, exposing our planet to danger. In particular, the persistent nitro aromatic compound like nitrophenols causes anxiety to the researchers due to their hazardous impacts, excessive usage, and removal difficulty. For this purpose, a novel multi-featured composite was constructed based on κ-Carrageenan (κ-Carr), MOF (MIL-125(Ti)), and magnetic Fe3O4 for efficient adsorptive removal of o-nitrophenol (o-NP). Interestingly, BET measurements revealed the high surface area of Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) of about 163.27 m2/g, while VSM showed its excellent magnetic property (20.34 emu/g). The comparison study pointed out the synergistic effect between Fe3O4, κ-Carr, and MIL-125(Ti), forming a composite with an excellent adsorption performance toward o-NP. The adsorption data obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and Freundlich isotherm model was better fitted than Langmuir and Temkin. Furthermore, Langmuir verified the supreme adsorption capacity of o-NP onto Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) since the computed qmax reached 320.26 mg/g at pH 6 and 25 °C. Furthermore, the XPS results postulated that the adsorption mechanism pf o-NP proceeded via H-bonding, π-π interaction, and electron donor-acceptor interactions. Interestingly, Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) composite retained good adsorption characteristics after reusing for five cycles, suggesting its viable applicability as an efficient, renewable, and easy-separable adsorbent for removing nitro aromatic pollutants.

RESUMO

Water pollution is an aggravating dilemma that is extending around the world, threatening human survival. Strikingly, the notorious heavy metals like hexavalent chromium ions (Cr6+) cause environmental problems raising awareness of the essentials for finding feasible solutions. For this purpose, the self-floating Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA microbeads were prepared for removing Cr6+. The morphological, thermal, and composition characteristics of Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA microbeads were analyzed using XRD, FTIR, TGA, SEM, XPS, and zeta potential. Notably, the adsorption aptitude of Cr6+ was enhanced by raising the MWCNTs proportion to 5 wt% in microbeads. The Cr6+ adsorption onto Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA fitted Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models with qm of 384.62 mg/g at pH 3 and 298 K. The adsorption process was described kinetically by the pseudo-2nd order model. More importantly, the adsorption of Cr6+ onto Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA occurred via electrostatic interactions, inner/outer sphere complexations, ion exchange, and reduction mechanisms. Besides, the cycling test showed the remarkable reusability of Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA floatable microbeads for five subsequent cycles. The self-floating Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA microbeads in this work provide essential support for the potential applications for the remediation of heavy metals-containing wastewater.

RESUMO

In this study, a multi-featured adsorbent was developed for the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) ions. Herein, aminated graphene oxide (GO-NH2) was firstly synthetized and incorporated into cellulose acetate beads (CA) which were followed by surface amine-functionalization process. Varies characterization tools such as FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, TGA, XRD, BET, XPS and zeta potential were employed to ensure the successful fabrication of GO-NH2@CA-NH2 composite beads. An enhancement in the adsorption performance was attained, while the adsorption equilibrium was closely gotten within only 60 min. Therefore, the adsorption capacity was boosted with increasing GO-NH2 ratio in the beads matrix from 10 to 25%. Furthermore, the adsorption process agreed with Freundlich isotherm model with a supreme adsorption capacity of 410.21 mg/g at pH 2, while data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Besides, thermodynamic studies denoted that the adsorption process was endothermic, randomness and spontaneous. The composite beads retained better adsorption characteristics for seven sequential cycles with ease of separation. The proposed adsorption of Cr6+ onto GO-NH2@CA-NH2 surface occurred via the electrostatic interactions, reduction process and coordinate-covalent bonds. These findings hypothesize that the fabricated GO-NH2@CA-NH2 beads could be act as easy-separable and reusable adsorbent for efficient adsorption of Cr6+ ions.

RESUMO

The jeopardy of the synthetic dyes effluents on human health and the environment has swiftly aggravated, threatening human survival. Hence, sustained studies have figured out the most acceptable way to eliminate this poisonous contaminant. Thereby, our investigation aimed to fabricate montmorillonite/magnetic NiFe2O4@amine-functionalized chitosan (MMT-mAmCs) composite as a promising green adsorbent to remove the cationic methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) dyes from the wastewater in neutral conditions. Interestingly, MMT-mAmCs composite carries high negative charges at a wide pH range from 4 to 11 as clarified from zeta potential measurements, asserting its suitability to adsorb the cationic contaminants. In addition, the experimental study confirmed that the optimum pH to adsorb both MB and CV was pH 7, inferring the ability of MMT-mAmCs to adsorb both cationic dyes in simple process conditions. Furthermore, the ferromagnetic behavior of the MMT-mAmCs composite is additional merit to our adsorbent that provides facile, fast, and flawless separation. Notably, the as-fabricated composite revealed an auspicious adsorbability towards the adsorptive removal of MB and CV, since the maximum adsorption capacity of MB and CV were 137 and 118 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the isotherm and kinetic investigatins depicted that the adsorption of both cationic dyes fitted Langmuir and Pseudo 2nd order models, respectively. Besides, the advanced adsorbent preserved satisfactory adsorption characteristics with maximal removal efficacy exceeding 87% after reuse for ten consecutive cycles. More importantly, MMT-mAmCs efficiently adsorbed MB and CV from real agricultural water, Nile river water and wastewater samples at the neutral pH medium, reflecting its potentiality to be a superb reusable candidate for adsorptive removal cationic pollutants from their aquatic media.

RESUMO

Removal of pharmaceutical wastes, especially antibiotics from aquatic systems is an imperative issue from both human-health and ecological perspectives. Herein, zwitterionic UiO-66/ZIF-8 binary MOF/polydopamine@cellulose acetate composite (UiO-66/ZIF-8/PDA@CA) were fabricated in the form of floated beads for the adsorptive removal of tetracycline (TC). The formulated composite beads were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, Zeta potential and XPS analysis tools. Under optimum adsorption conditions, the UiO-66/ZIF-8/PDA@CA composite beads demonstrated large specific surface area, good adsorption performance with a relatively short equilibrium time (60 min) and ease separation. Furthermore, the adsorption data fit Temkin > Langmuir > Freundlich with a maximal adsorption capacity of 290.69 mg/g at 25 °C, while the adsorption kinetics were well-described by pseudo-second order kinetics. The thermodynamics studies refereed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Besides, the floated UiO-66/ZIF-8/PDA@CA beads displayed better adsorption property for eight reuse cycles with a maximal removal (%) reached 67%, reflecting its promising applicability as reusable adsorbent for efficient removal of antibiotics from water bodies.

RESUMO

In this study, a novel magnetic organic-inorganic composite was fabricated. Chitosan, sulfacetamide and ethylacetoacetae were used to prepare a new Sulfacetamide-Ethylacetoacetate hydrazone-chitosan Schiff-base (SEH-CSB) with a variety of active sites that capable of forming coordinate covalent bonds with Cr(VI). This was followed by modification of the formed SHE-CSB with NiFe2O4 to obtain the magnetic Chitosan-Schiff-base composite (NiFe2O4@SEH-CSB). NiFe2O4@SEH-CSB was characterized using FTIR, zeta potential, SEM, VSM and XPS. Results clarified that SHE played a crucial role in the removal of Cr(VI). The removal of Cr(VI) on NiFe2O4@SEH-CSB was found to be more fitted to pseudo-second order kinetics model and Freundlich isotherm. Besides, the maximum adsorption capacity of NiFe2O4@SEH-CSB towards Cr(VI) was found to be 373.61 mg/g. The plausible mechanism for the removal of Cr(VI) by NiFe2O4@SEH-CSB composite suggested the domination of coulombic interaction, outer-sphere complexation, ion-exchange, surface complexation and coordinate-covalent bond pathways. The magnetic property enabled easy recycling of NiFe2O4@SEH-CSB composite for seven sequential cycles.

RESUMO

New multi-featured adsorbent beads were fabricated through impregnation of sulfonated graphene (SGO) oxide into cellulose acetate (CA) beads for fast adsorption of cationic methylene blue (MB) dye. The formulated SGO@CA composite beads were thoroughly characterized by several tools including FTIR, TGA, SEM, XRD, XPS and zeta potential. The optimal levels of the most significant identified variables affecting the adsorption process were sequential determined by the response surface methodology (RSM) using Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken designs. The gained results denoted that the surface of SGO@CA beads displayed the higher negative charges (- 42.2 mV) compared to - 35.7 and - 38.7 mV for pristine CA and SGO, respectively. In addition, the floated SGO@CA beads demonstrated excellent floating property, fast adsorption and easy separation. The adsorption performance was accomplished rapidly, since the adsorption equilibrium was closely gotten within 30 min. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity was greatly improved with increasing SGO content from 10 to 30%. The obtained data were followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model and agreed with Langmuir adsorption isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity reached 234.74 mg g-1. The thermodynamic studies designated the spontaneity and endothermic nature of MB dye adsorption. Besides, the floated beads exposed acceptable adsorption characteristics for six successive reuse cycles, in addition to their better adsorption selectivity towards MB dye compared to cationic crystal violet and anionic Congo red dyes. These findings assume that the formulated SGO@CA floated beads could be used effectively as highly efficient, easy separable and reusable adsorbents for the fast removal of toxic cationic dyes.

RESUMO

The huge development of the industrial sector has resulted in the release of large quantities of phosphate anions which adversely affect the environment, human health, and aquatic ecosystems. Naturally occurring biopolymers have attracted considerable attention as efficient adsorbents for phosphate anions due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, environmentally-friendly nature, low-cost production, availability in nature, and ease of modification. Amongst them, alginate-based adsorbents are considered one of the most effective adsorbents for removing various types of pollutants from industrial wastewater. The presence of active COOH and OH- groups along the alginate backbone facilitate its physical and chemical modifications and participate in various possible adsorption mechanisms of phosphate anions. Herein, we focus our attention on presenting a comprehensive overview of recent advances in phosphate removal by alginate-based adsorbents. Modification of alginate by various materials, including clays, magnetic materials, layered double hydroxides, carbon materials, and multivalent metals, is addressed. The adsorption potentials of these modified forms for removing phosphate anions, in addition to their adsorption mechanisms are clearly discussed. It is concluded that ion exchange, complexation, precipitation, Lewis acid-base interaction and electrostatic interaction are the most common adsorption mechanisms of phosphate removal by alginate-based adsorbents. Pseudo-2nd order and Freundlich isotherms were figured out to be the major kinetic and isotherm models for the removal process of phosphate. The research findings revealed that some issues, including the high cost of production, leaching, and low efficiency of recyclability of alginate-based adsorbents still need to be resolved. Future trends that could inspire further studies to find the best solutions for removing phosphate anions from aquatic systems are also elaborated, such as the synthesis of magnetic-based alginate and various-shaped alginate nanocomposites that are capable of preventing the leaching of the active materials.

RESUMO

During COVID-19 crisis, water pollution caused by pharmaceutical residuals have enormously aggravated since millions of patients worldwide are consuming tons of drugs daily. Antibiotics are the preponderance pharmaceutical pollutants in water bodies that surely cause a real threat to human life and ecosystems. The excellent characteristics of chitosan such as nontoxicity, easy functionality, biodegradability, availability in nature and the abundant hydroxyl and amine groups onto its backbone make it a promising adsorbent. Herein, we aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of recent published research papers regarding the removal of antibiotics by chitosan composite-based adsorbents. The structure, ionic form, optimum removal pH and λmax of the most common antibiotics including Tetracycline, Ciprofloxacin, Amoxicillin, Levofloxacin, Ceftriaxone, Erythromycin, Norfloxacin, Ofloxacin, Doxycycline, Cefotaxime and Sulfamethoxazole were summarized. The development of chitosan composite-based adsorbents in order to enhance their adsorption capacity, reusability and validity were presented. Moreover, the adsorption mechanisms of these antibiotics were explored to provide more information about adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. Besides the dominant factors on the adsorption process including pH, dosage, coexisting ions, etc. were discussed. Moreover, conclusions and future recommendations are provided to inspire for further researches.

RESUMO

Herein, we report a new metal-organic framework (MOF)-based composite beads adsorbent made via incorporating UiO-66 MOF, carboxylated graphene oxide (GOCOOH) into sodium alginate for efficient removal of methylene blue dye, and Cu2+ ions. The successful fabrication of the synthesized UiO-66/GOCOOH@SA composite beads was confirmed by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, zeta potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis and BET measurement. The incorporation of both UiO-66 and GOCOOH into SA beads greatly increased their adsorption efficiency for the removal of both MB and Cu2+ with maximum adsorption capacities of 490.72 and 343.49 mg/g, respectively. The removal process of both MB and Cu2+ follows the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich isotherm model. A plausible adsorption mechanism was discussed in detail. Regeneration tests clarified that the removal efficiencies toward both MB and Cu2+ remained higher than 87% after five cycles. These results reveal the potentiality of UiO-66/GOCOOH@SA beads as an excellent adsorbent.
