RESUMO

In this Letter, we demonstrate that the far-field terahertz (THz) beam generated from a Ti:Sapphire two-color laser-induced filament can exhibit a conical or Gaussian distribution, depending on the filtering experimental conditions. Using both an incoherent Golay cell detector and a two-dimensional coherent electro-optic detection covering the 0.2-2.6 THz spectral range, in our experimental conditions, we provide evidence that the conical emission is due to photo-induced carriers in the silicon filter, typically used to block the remaining pump laser light. Moreover, the low-frequency THz beam retrieves an almost $ {{\rm TEM}_{00}} $TEM00 Gaussian spatial distribution when the silicon filter is preceded by a large bandgap ceramic filter, which stops the pump beam, thus preventing the carrier generation in the silicon filter.

RESUMO

Digital holography (DH) is a promising method for non-contact surface topography because the reconstructed phase image can visualize the nanometer unevenness in a sample. However, the axial range of this method is limited to the range of the optical wavelength due to the phase wrapping ambiguity. Although the use of two different wavelengths of light and the resulting synthetic wavelength, i.e., synthetic wavelength DH, can expand the axial range up to several hundreds of millimeters, its axial precision does not reach sub-micrometer. In this article, we constructed a tunable external cavity laser diode phase-locked to an optical frequency comb, namely, an optical-comb-referenced frequency synthesizer, enabling us to generate multiple synthetic wavelengths within the range of 32 µm to 1.20 m. A multiple cascade link of the phase images among an optical wavelength ( = 1.520 µm) and 5 different synthetic wavelengths ( = 32.39 µm, 99.98 µm, 400.0 µm, 1003 µm, and 4021 µm) enables the shape measurement of a reflective millimeter-sized stepped surface with the axial resolution of 34 nm. The axial dynamic range, defined as the ratio of the axial range ( = 2.0 mm) to the axial resolution ( = 34 nm), achieves 5.9 × 105, which is larger than that of previous synthetic wavelength DH. Such a wide axial dynamic range capability will further expand the application field of DH for large objects with meter dimensions.

RESUMO

We report on the wavefront correction of a terahertz (THz) beam using adaptive optics, which requires both a wavefront sensor that is able to sense the optical aberrations, as well as a wavefront corrector. The wavefront sensor relies on a direct 2D electro-optic imaging system composed of a ZnTe crystal and a CMOS camera. By measuring the phase variation of the THz electric field in the crystal, we were able to minimize the geometrical aberrations of the beam, thanks to the action of a deformable mirror. This phase control will open the route to THz adaptive optics in order to optimize the THz beam quality for both practical and fundamental applications.

RESUMO

We propose a topological beam-shaping strategy of terahertz (THz) beams using geometric phase elements made of space-variant birefringent slabs. Quasi-monochromatic THz vortex beams are produced and characterized both in amplitude and phase from the reconstructed real-time two-dimensional imaging of the electric field. Nonseparable superpositions of such vortex beams are also obtained and characterized by two-dimensional polarimetric analysis. These results emphasize the versatility of the spin-orbit electromagnetic toolbox to prepare on-demand structured light endowed with polarization-controlled orbital angular momentum content in the THz domain, which should find many uses in future THz technologies.

RESUMO

Wavefront characterization of terahertz pulses is essential to optimize far-field intensity distribution of time-domain (imaging) spectrometers or increase the peak power of intense terahertz sources. In this paper, we report on the wavefront measurement of terahertz pulses using a Hartmann sensor associated with a 2D electro-optic imaging system composed of a ZnTe crystal and a CMOS camera. We quantitatively determined the deformations of planar and converging spherical wavefronts using the modal Zernike reconstruction least-squares method. Associated with deformable mirrors, the sensor will also open the route to terahertz adaptive optics.

RESUMO

We report on the second harmonic generation (SHG) of a near-infrared pulse in a zinc telluride crystal through the Pockels effect induced by an intense terahertz pulse. The temporal and angular behaviors of the SHG have been measured and agree well with theoretical predictions. This phenomenon, so far overlooked, makes it possible to generate second harmonic through cascading of two second-order nonlinear phenomena in the near-infrared and terahertz ranges. We also show how this cascading process can be used to sample terahertz pulses.

RESUMO

We demonstrated fast three-dimensional transmission terahertz computed tomography by using real-time line projection of intense terahertz beam generated by optical rectification in lithium niobate crystal. After emphasizing the advantage of intense terahertz pulse generation for two-dimensional spatio-temporal terahertz imaging, peak-to-peak amplitudes of pulsed terahertz electric field have been used to obtain a series of projection images at different rotation angles. Then a standard reconstruction algorithm has been employed to perform final three-dimensional reconstruction. Test samples including a medicine capsule have been investigated with a total acquisition time to only 6 minutes.

RESUMO

Coupling optical and thermal properties of a terahertz (THz) thermal converter based on the Seebeck effect provides an unsupplied room-temperature measuring device dedicated to THz power metrology. Performance characteristics such as broadband response (0-30 THz), high sensitivity (<25 µW·Hz(-0.5)), and the possibility to develop an internal absolute self-calibration estimated at 9.93 W·V(-1) are reported. Advantages and drawbacks of this THz powermeter are discussed.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional terahertz computed tomography has been used to investigate dried human bones such as a lumbar vertebra, a coxal bone, and a skull, with a direct comparison with standard radiography. In spite of lower spatial resolution compared with x-ray, terahertz imaging clearly discerns a compact bone from a spongy one, with strong terahertz absorption as shown by additional terahertz time-domain transmission spectroscopy.

RESUMO

We demonstrated fast terahertz spectral computed tomography by using real-time line projection of a terahertz beam. Two types of cross-sectional images of continuously rotating samples have been measured in only a few seconds. From temporal data, a peak-to-peak sinogram and cross sections have been reconstructed using a filtered backprojection algorithm. Using fast Fourier transform from temporal data, spectral cross sections of the sample have been obtained.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Shisha which was formally popular mostly in the Eastern Mediterranean region is now gaining popularity globally and has become a trending tobacco product in Nigeria. The increasing popularity of shisha is possibly driven by the attractive flavours and the misperception that it is safer than traditional cigarettes. Since the media plays a significant influence on public awareness, perception and understanding of various issues, this study sought to explore the coverage of shisha use by five national newspapers in Nigeria. METHODS: Five newspapers were selected based on their website traffic (online readership). The software NVIVO 12 was used to organise the content of the articles into themes. RESULTS: Between 2014 and 2018, we found 30 relevant publications about shisha. Some newspaper articles reported that shisha smoking was gaining popularity among youths, especially in tertiary institutions across the country. Similarly, some misconceptions about the safety of smoking shisha among shisha users was reported. Addiction to shisha was also reported as being so common that many shisha users were no longer satisfied with just visiting nightclubs and shisha cafes but now own the shisha paraphernalia. There were also reports that the tobacco in shisha was in some instances being replaced or mixed with other hard drugs like marijuana. Subtle advertisement of shisha lounges, which is a violation of the Nigeria National Tobacco Control Act, was also observed. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need for increased sensitization of the public through the media on the dangers of shisha smoking and other tobacco product use. There is also a need for a national survey to determine the prevalence of shisha use in Nigeria.

RESUMO

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopic (THz-TDS) imaging is an interesting new tool for nondestructive testing and other applications. However, the current speed of image acquisition is relatively low, making it difficult to use for moving objects. In this paper, we propose a real-time THz-TDS line scanner based on electro-optical time-to-space conversion and line focusing of a THz beam. The proposed system functions as a color scanner in the terahertz spectral region with fast line-scanning and has been successfully used to image objects, which are moved on a translation stage. The achieved THz-TDS imaging rate is 23,200 pixels per second. This proposed THz-TDS line scanner has the potential to become a powerful tool for monitoring moving objects in various real-world applications.

RESUMO

Hemicyanine Langmuir-Blodgett films have been elaborated and characterized using stationary and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Depending on the experimental conditions, especially the pH of the water subphase, the absorption spectra of the films indicate the presence of non-fluorescent H-aggregates in the monolayer. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements revealed three mono-exponential decay times: a very short one (20-23 ps) attributed to an excited intramolecular charge transfer state and two longer ones (100-120 ps and 400-590 ps) attributed to the photoisomerization of the chromophores.

RESUMO

We demonstrate the potential of a new optical imaging system to directly obtain a longitudinal slice of a biological sample. The system, based on a single-shot optical correlator, operates a time-to-space conversion and an optical time-gating by sum-frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal. Owing to the high speed acquisition of the technique, internal structures of in-vivo tissues can be imaged at video rate. With this apparatus, we recorded longitudinal images of ex vivo mouse ear and in vivo human skin with a depth resolution of approximately 15 microm.

RESUMO

We demonstrate microscopic time-resolved two-dimensional (2D) imaging that is based on a femtosecond amplifying optical Kerr gate (fs-amp OKG). The contribution of the optical nonlinear effects to the transverse imaging performance and the limit of the transverse resolving power are investigated. The optical Kerr effect in the excited state with amplification, used in the fs-amp OKG, does not deteriorate the quality of the time-resolved image at transverse resolutions up to at least 5.5 microm. We obtain a femtosecond-time-resolved 2D image of a microscopic object with a transverse resolution of 1.7 microm.
