OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk of DM and evaluate the impact of SLE therapies on the risk of developing DM in patients with SLE. METHODS: Electronic database searches of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were performed from inception to February 2023. Cohort and cross-sectional studies that analyzed the risk of DM in patients with SLE were included. The associations between diabetes and antirheumatic agents, such as antimalarials and glucocorticoids, were analyzed in cohort studies. Data were pooled using fixed- or random-effects meta-analysis to estimate pooled odd ratios (OR), relative risks (RR), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023402774). RESULTS: A total of 37 studies (23 cross-sectional and 14 cohort studies) involving 266 537 patients with SLE were included. The pooled analyses from cross-sectional studies and cohort studies did not show an increased risk of DM in SLE patients (OR = 1.05, 95% CI 0.87-1.27; p = 0.63 and RR = 1.32, 95% CI 0.93-1.87; p= 0.12, respectively). However, several cohort studies consistently demonstrated a reduced risk of diabetes with antimalarials, while glucocorticoid use has been associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes. Age, sex, hypertension, and immunosuppressants have not been identified as risk factors for DM in SLE patients. CONCLUSIONS: Although there was no increased risk of DM in patients with SLE compared with controls, HCQ users or adherents had a decreased risk, whereas glucocorticoid users had an increased risk.

BACKGROUND: Studies examining the association between in utero Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure and child neurodevelopmental outcomes have produced varied results. METHODS: We aimed to assess neurodevelopmental outcomes among normocephalic children born from pregnant people enrolled in the Zika in Pregnancy in Honduras (ZIPH) cohort study, July-December 2016. Enrollment occurred during the first prenatal visit. Exposure was defined as prenatal ZIKV IgM and/or ZIKV RNA result at enrollment. Normocephalic children, >6 months old, were selected for longitudinal follow-up using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (BSID-III) and the Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE-2). RESULTS: One hundred fifty-two children were assessed; after exclusion, 60 were exposed and 72 were unexposed to ZIKV during pregnancy. Twenty children in the exposed group and 21 children in the unexposed group had a composite score <85 in any of the BSID-III domains. Although exposed children had lower cognitive and language scores, differences were not statistically significant. For ASQ:SE-2 assessment, there were not statistically significant differences between groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study found no statistically significant differences in the neurodevelopment of normocephalic children between in utero ZIKV exposed and unexposed. Nevertheless, long-term monitoring of children with in utero ZIKV exposure is warranted. IMPACT: This study found no statistically significant differences in the neurodevelopment in normocephalic children with in utero Zika virus exposure compared to unexposed children, although the exposed group showed lower cognitive and language scores that persisted after adjustment by maternal age and education and after excluding children born preterm and low birth weight from the analysis. Children with prenatal Zika virus exposure, including those normocephalic and have no evidence of abnormalities at birth, should be monitored for neurodevelopmental delays. Follow-up is important to be able to detect developmental abnormalities that might not be detected earlier in life.

Tuning the anionic site of catalyst supports can impact reaction pathways by creating active sites on the support or influencing metal-support interactions when using supported metal nanoparticles. This study focuses on CO2 hydrogenation over supported Cu nanoparticles, revealing a 3-fold increase in methanol yield when replacing oxygen anions with hydrides in the perovskite support (Cu/BaTiO2.8 H0.2 yields ~146 mg/h/gCu vs. Cu/BaTiO3 yields ~50 mg/h/gCu). The contrast suggests that significant roles are played by the support hydrides in the reaction. Temperature programmed reaction and isotopic labelling studies indicate that BaTiO2.8 H0.2 surface hydride species follow a Mars van Krevelen mechanism in CO2 hydrogenation, promoting methanol production. High-pressure steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) studies suggest that Cu/BaTiO2.8 H0.2 possesses both a higher density and more active and selective sites for methanol production compared to Cu/BaTiO3 . An operando high-pressure diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS)-SSITKA study shows that formate species are the major surface intermediates over both catalysts, and the subsequent hydrogenation steps of formate are likely rate-limiting. However, the catalytic reactivity of Cu/BaTiO2.8 H0.2 towards the formate species is much higher than Cu/BaTiO3 , likely due to the altered electronic structure of interface Cu sites by the hydrides in the support as validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Multicomponent catalysts can be designed to synergistically combine reaction intermediates at interfacial active sites, but restructuring makes systematic control and understanding of such dynamics challenging. We here unveil how reducibility and mobility of indium oxide species in Ru-based catalysts crucially control the direct, selective conversion of CO2 to ethanol. When uncontrolled, reduced indium oxide species occupy the Ru surface, leading to deactivation. With the addition of steam as a mild oxidant and using porous polymer layers to control In mobility, Ru-In2O3 interface sites are stabilized, and ethanol can be produced with superior overall selectivity (70%, rest CO). Our work highlights how engineering of bifunctional active ensembles enables cooperativity and synergy at tailored interfaces, which unlocks unprecedented performance in heterogeneous catalysts.

A mixed-valence oxotrimer metal-organic framework (MOF), Ni-MIL-127, with a fully coordinated nickel atom and two iron atoms in the inorganic node, generates a missing linker defect upon thermal treatment in helium (>473 K) to engender an open coordination site on nickel which catalyzes propylene oligomerization devoid of any cocatalysts or initiators. This catalyst is stable for ∼20 h on stream at 500 kPa and 473 K, unprecedented for this chemistry. The number of missing linkers on synthesized and activated Ni-MIL-127 MOFs is quantified using temperature-programmed oxidation, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to be ∼0.7 missing linkers per nickel; thus, a majority of Ni species in the MOF framework catalyze propylene oligomerization. In situ NO titrations under reaction conditions enumerate ∼62% of the nickel atoms as catalytically relevant to validate the defect density upon thermal treatment. Propylene oligomerization rates on Ni-MIL-127 measured at steady state have activation energies of 55-67 kJ mol-1 from 448 to 493 K and are first-order in propylene pressures from 5 to 550 kPa. Density functional theory calculations on cluster models of Ni-MIL-127 are employed to validate the plausibility of the missing linker defect and the Cossee-Arlman mechanism for propylene oligomerization through comparisons between apparent activation energies from steady-state kinetics and computation. This study illustrates how MOF precatalysts engender defective Ni species which exhibit reactivity and stability characteristics that are distinct and can be engineered to improve catalytic activity for olefin oligomerization.

This paper presents software for calculating the optimal mass of samples with complex compositions (e.g. supported metal catalysts) for X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and scattering measurements. The ability to calculate the sample mass and other relevant parameters needed for an XAS measurement allows experimentalists to be better prepared in terms of detector selection, energy range of scan and overall time needed to complete the measurement, thus increasing efficiency. CatMass builds on existing sample mass calculators allowing users to determine the optimum sample preparation, collection geometry, usable energy range for a scan and approximate edge step of the absorption event. Visualization tools present the absorption calculation results in a format familiar to XAS experimentalists, with the added ability to save calculations and plots for future reference or recalculation. CatMass is a program broadly applicable in catalysis and is helpful for users with complex samples due to composition/stoichiometry or multiple competing elements.

The Systemic Lupus International Clinics (SLICC)-Frailty Index (FI) is associated with adverse outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, to our knowledge, its association with bone mineral density (BMD) and vertebral fractures (VF), has not been investigated using a standardized methods. Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between frailty assessed by SLICC-FI, and BMD and VF in Mestizo women with SLE. Adult women were included in this cross-sectional study. Information concerning the risk factors for VF and BMD in the lumbar spine and total hip was acquired. SLICC-FI was assessed at baseline. A semi-quantitative method was utilized to evaluate the prevalence of VF on lateral thoracolumbar radiographs. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), SLE duration, cumulative glucocorticoid dose, bisphosphonate use, and BMD measurements. We included 202 women with SLE (mean age [SD] = 43.3 [13.6] years). The mean (SD) SLICC-FI value was 0.14 (0.09). Eleven (5.4%) patients were categorized as robust, 62 (30.7%) as relatively less fit, 84 (41.6%) as least fit, and 45 (22.3%) as frail. Both univariate and multivariate models showed associations between frailty (defined as SLICC-FI > 0.21) and prevalent VF in the entire population (OR 5.76, 95% CI 2.53-13.12; P < 0.001) and in the premenopausal group (OR 4.29, 95% CI; P = 0.047). We also found an association between the SLICC-FI and low BMD. In conclusion, frailty assessed by SLICC-FI might be associated with VF and low BMD in mestizo females with SLE.

The aims of this study were in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients: 1) to compare the metabolomic profile of insulin resistance (IR) with controls and 2) to correlate the metabolomic profile with other IR surrogates and SLE disease variables and vitamin levels. In this cross-sectional study, serum samples were collected from women with SLE (n=64) and gender- and age-matched controls (n=71), which were not diabetic. Serum metabolomic profiling was performed using UPLC-MS-MS (Quantse score). HOMA and QUICKI were carried out. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay. In women with SLE, the metabolomic Quantose score significantly correlated with HOMA-IR, HOMA2-IR, and QUICKI. Although concentrations of IR metabolites were not different between SLE patients and controls, fasting plasma insulin levels were higher and insulin sensitivity lower in SLE women. Interestingly, the Quantose IR score was significantly correlated with complement C3 levels (r=0.7; p=0.001). 25 (OH)D did not correlate with any metabolite or the Quantose IR index. Quantose IR may be a useful tool for IR assessment. There was a possible correlation between the metabolomic profile and complement C3 levels. The implementation of this metabolic strategy may help develop biochemical insight into metabolic disorders in SLE.

BACKGROUND: Low disease activity state (LDAS) has been linked to a significant reduction in flares and damage accrual in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); however, the effect of LDAS on the risk of vertebral fractures (VFs) in subjects with SLE is unknown, considering that low bone mineral density (BMD) and VF are frequent in SLE. OBJECTIVE: to evaluate whether achieving LDAS ≥50% of the observation time prevents new VF and BMD changes in Mestizo women. METHODS: We carried out a longitudinal, observational, and retrospective study. Mestizo women with SLE were included for a median of an 8-year follow-up. LDAS was described as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) score ≤4, prednisone ≤7.5 mg/day, and stable immunosuppressive therapies. BMD measurements and lateral thoracic and lumbar radiographs for a semiquantitative analysis for VF were assessed at baseline and during the follow-up. Uni- and multivariable interval-censored survival regression models were carried out. RESULTS: We included 110 patients: 35 (31.8%) had new VF. A total of 56 patients (50.1%) achieved LDAS ≥50% of the time during the follow-up and achieved a significantly lesser risk of incident VF (HR = 0.16; 95% CI, 0.06-0.49). After adjusting by age, BMI, menopause, prevalent VF, baseline BMD, cumulative glucocorticoid use, and anti-osteoporotic therapy, LDAS-50 was significantly related to a decrease in the risk of a new VF (HR = 0.39; 95% CI, 0.16-0.98). There was no association between LDAS and BMD measurement changes. When only patients on LDAS but not in remission (n = 43) were evaluated for the risk of incident VF, both uni- and multivariate analyses were significant (HR = 0.12; 95 CI, 0.04-47; p = 0.001, and HR = 0.26; 95% CI, 0.7-0.88; p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: LDAS ≥50% of the time was significantly associated with a diminished risk of new VF in Mestizo women with SLE, even in patients not in remission. However, LDAS did not help modify BMD changes over time.

Sustainable production of rare earth elements (REEs) is critical for technologies needed for climate change mitigation, including wind turbines and electric vehicles. However, separation technologies currently used in REE production have large environmental footprints, necessitating more sustainable strategies. Aqueous, affinity-based separations are examples of such strategies. To make these technologies feasible, it is imperative to connect aqueous ligand structure to ligand selectivity for individual REEs. As a step toward this goal, we analyzed the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of four lanthanides (La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) complexed by a common REE chelator, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to determine the aqueous-phase structure. Reference structures from density functional theory (DFT) were used to help fit the EXAFS spectra. We found that all four Ln-EDTA coordination complexes formed 9-coordinate structures with 6 coordinating atoms from EDTA (4 carboxyl oxygen atoms and 2 nitrogen atoms) and 3 oxygen atoms from water molecules. All EXAFS fits were of high quality (R-factor < 0.02) and showed decreasing average first-shell coordination distance across the series (2.62-2.57 Å from La-Nd), in agreement with DFT (2.65-2.56 Å from La-Nd). The insights determined herein will be useful in the development of ligands for sustainable rare earth elements (REE) separation technologies.

The study aimed to analyze the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on mortality rates in patients with systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARD) in Mexico. We selected SARD-related deaths using National Open Data and Information from the Ministry of Health, Mexico, and ICD-10 codes. We assessed the observed compared to the predicted mortality values for 2020 and 2021, employing trends from 2010 to 2019 with joinpoint and prediction modelling analyses. Among 12,742 deaths due to SARD between 2010 and 2021, the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) increased significantly between 2010 and 2019 (pre-pandemic) (annual percentage change [APC] 1.1%; 95% CI 0.2-2.1), followed by a non-significant decrease during the pandemic period (APC 13.9%; 95% CI 13.9-5.3). In addition, the observed ASMR of 1.19 for 2020 for SARD and of 1.14 for 2021 were lower than the predicted values of 1.25 (95% CI 1.22-1.28) for 2020 and 1.25 (95% CI 1.20-1.30) for 2021. Similar findings were identified for specific SARD, mainly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or by sex or age group. Interestingly, the observed mortality rates for SLE in the Southern region of 1.00 in 2020 and 1.01 in 2021 were both significantly greater than the predicted values of 0.71 (95% CI 0.65-0.77) in 2020 and 0.71 (95% CI 0.63-0.79). In Mexico, the observed SARD mortality rates were not higher than the expected values during the pandemic, except for SLE in the Southern region. No differences by sex or age group were identified.

BACKGROUND: The influence of the work environment on missed care and service quality has been well documented. However, available evidence concerning this relationship comes mostly from developed countries. Few studies have been conducted in low- or middle-income countries. We assessed the relationship between the work environment and missed nursing care in highly specialised hospitals in Mexico. METHODS: We conducted an observational cross-sectional study with data collected from January 2019 to February 2020 in 11 highly specialised hospitals (n = 510 nurses). We estimated missed nursing care utilising the MISSCARE questionnaire and used the Practice Environment Scale-Nursing Work Index instrument to assess the work environment. After describing the main attributes of the study sample according to the type of work environment, we constructed five adjusted fractional regression models, the first concerning the overall index of missed care, and the others pertaining to its various dimensions. RESULTS: The sample analysed was balanced as regards adjustment variables according to the type of work environment. The adjusted estimates confirmed an inverse relationship between the missed care index and enjoying an enhanced, or favourable, work environment. Overall, the difference was 9 percentage points (pp); however, by dimension of missed care, the major differences between enhanced and attenuated, or unfavourable, work environments were registered for basic care, followed by patient education and discharge planning (4pp) and individual needs (8pp). CONCLUSIONS: The work environment determines the frequency of missed nursing care, both overall and by dimension. Nursing managers need to create short- and mid-term strategies favouring positive work environments in order to improve working conditions for nursing professionals.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalizations due to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) incur substantial resource use. Hospitalization trends provide a key benchmark of the disease burden. However, there is little long-term data in Mexico. Therefore, we evaluated Mexican hospitalization trends for SLE during 2000-2019. METHODS: Hospitalization trends of SLE were studied using data from 2000 to 2019 releases of the National Dynamic Cubes of the General Direction of Health Information, which provides data on hospitalization discharges in Mexico. Patients aged ≥15 years hospitalized during the study period with a principal discharge diagnosis of SLE (ICD-10 code M32) were included. RESULTS: From 2000 to 2019, there were 17,081 hospitalizations for SLE, of which 87.6% were in females and 87% in subjects aged 15-44 years. From 2000 to 2019, the age-standardized hospitalization rate for patients with SLE increased from 0.38 per 100,000 persons to 0.65 per 100,000 persons with an average annual percentage change (APC) of 2.9% (95% CI 6.2-63.2). Although there was a significant uptrend from 2000 through 2011, there was a significant decline from 2011 to 2019 (APC: -4.8%, 95% CI -7.0% to -2.5%). Similar trends were identified in subjects aged 15-44 years and in both sexes. The length of stay and inpatient mortality decreased between 2000-2009 and 2010-2019. CONCLUSIONS: Although there was a substantial increase in SLE hospitalizations in 2000-2019, in 2011-2019, a decreased trend was reported in younger patients and in females and males. The length of stay was also reduced.

Most prospective studies of bone mineral density (BMD) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients have been of relatively short duration, with a maximum of 6 years. To describe long-term changes in BMD in women with SLE and identify risk factors associated with BMD loss. We retrospectively evaluated 132 adult Mexican-Mestizo women with SLE who underwent dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Demographic and clinical data were collected and BMD at the lumbar spine (L1-L4) and total hip were collected at baseline and during the follow up. At baseline, the mean age of participants was 43.4 ± 12.5 years, 50.8% had osteopenia and 11% osteoporosis. The median follow-up was 13 (IQR 10.2-14.0) years. During follow up, 79% of patients used glucocorticoid (GCT). The mean percentage of changes in BMD during follow up were: - 14.03 ± 11.25% (- 1.49%/year) at the lumbar spine, and - 15.77 ± 11.57% (- 1.78%/year) at the total hip, with significant changes (p < 0.001 for both comparisons). Multivariate analysis showed older age, GCT use at baseline, and transition to the menopause during the follow-up were significantly associated with greater reductions in BMD. This retrospective longitudinal study found significant BMD loss at the lumbar spine and hip. Older age, menopausal transition and GCT use were independently associated with BMD decline in women with SLE.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence on the relationship between resilience and medication adherence in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients is lacking. We aimed to examine the impact of resilience on medication adherence in SLE patients. METHOD: In a cross-sectional analysis SLE outpatients were assessed for resilience (Connor-Davison Resilience Scale, CD-RISC), depressive symptoms (CES-D) and medication adherence (Compliance Questionnaire for Rheumatology [CQR]). The disease activity index (mexSLEDAI) and damage (SLICC Damage Index) were administered. Factors independently associated with adherence were identified using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Of the 157 patients, 152 (96.8%) were female with a median age of 45.9 (IQR: 39.0-55.5) years and disease duration of 14 (IQR: 10.0-19.0) years. Medication adherence (CQR ≥80%) and depressive symptoms were found in 74.5% and 43.9% of patients, respectively. Adherent patients had a lower CES-D score and a higher CD-RISC score. In the multivariate analysis adjusting for demographic and clinical confounders, resilience and older age protected against non-adherence (OR 0.96, [95% CI 0.94-0.99] and OR 0.96 [95% CI 0.93-0.98], respectively). CONCLUSION: In SLE patients, resilience and older age, which possibly associated with better medication adherence, may protect against non-adherence.

Zeolites are widely applied supports for metal catalysts, but molecular sieves with comparable structures-silicoaluminophosphates (SAPOs)-have drawn much less attention and been overlooked as supports for atomically dispersed metals. Now, we report SAPO-37 as a support for atomically dispersed rhodium in rhodium diethylene complexes, made by the reaction of Rh(η2-C2H4)2(acetylacetonate) with the support and anchored by two Rh-O bonds at framework tetrahedral sites, as shown by infrared and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra. The ethylene ligands were readily replaced with CO, giving sharp νCO bands indicating highly uniform supported species. A comparison of the spectra with those of comparable rhodium complexes on zeolite HY shows that the SAPO- and zeolite-supported complexes are isostructural, providing an unmatched opportunity for determining support effects in catalysis. The two catalysts had similar initial room-temperature activities per Rh atom for ethylene conversion in the presence of H2, but the SAPO-supported catalyst was selective for ethylene hydrogenation and the zeolite-supported catalyst selective for ethylene dimerization; correspondingly, the catalyst on the SAPO was more stable than that on the zeolite during operation in a flow reactor.
