BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease that affects a wide range of animals, including small ruminants. Sheep and goats are considered as biological indicators for the contamination of the environment with Toxoplasma gondii oocysts. In addition, in countries such as Egypt, where sheep and goat meat is frequently consumed, T. gondii infection in small ruminants may also pose a public health risk. To establish baseline estimates of the prevalence of T. gondii infection in Egyptian small ruminants, we used an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to assess the seroprevalence in 398 sheep from four Egyptian governorates (Cairo, Giza, Dakahlia and Sharkia) and in 100 goats from Dakahlia. The positive and negative agreements of both tests were calculated and the true prevalence was estimated using a Bayesian approach. RESULTS: The true prevalence of antibodies to T. gondii as determined by both tests was higher in Egyptian goats (62%) than in sheep for each province (between 4.1 and 26%). Sheep slaughtered at the Cairo abattoir had the lowest true prevalence (4.1%), while true prevalences in Dakahlia, Giza and Sharkia governorates (26%, 23% and 12%, respectively) were substantially higher. CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of antibodies to T. gondii may indicate an important role of goat and sheep in the transmission of human toxoplasmosis in Egypt, given the habit of eating undercooked grilled mutton.

Trichostrongyle nematodes can be a major threat to the profitability of small ruminant producers depending of the species and intensity of trichostrongyles parasitizing their herd. Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circumcincta, and Trichostrongylus colubriformis are typically the most common and clinically important species. Three lectins (PNA, LCA and AAL) have been reported to bind specifically to eggs from these three genera and therefore could be used to quantify the intensity of each species in individual animals. Peanut agglutinin (PNA) has been the most commonly tested lectin because it selectively binds intensely to eggs of the most pathogenic species, H. contortus. Lens culinaris agglutinin (LCA) and Aleuria aurantia agglutinin (AAL) have shown specificity to T. circumcincta and Trichostrongylus spp. respectively, however, these lectins have only been evaluated using eggs harvested directly from adult females, and not from fecal samples. The purpose of the present study is to describe a method to sequentially stain H. contortus, T. circumcincta and Trichostrongylus spp. fecal eggs with PNA, LCA and AAL, and then evaluate the resultant staining patterns seen with eggs collected from a naturally infected goat shown with PCR to contain H. contortus, T. circumcincta, Ostertagia leptospicularis, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Trichostrongylus axei eggs. These results were also compared with patterns observed with eggs stained with single lectins and double combinations of lectins. The various patterns were then compared to those seen with egg samples collected from an ewe shown to only contain H. contortus. PNA bound intensely and uniformly to all eggs from samples containing only H. contortus eggs; however, some eggs additionally bound LCA and AAL in localized patches of varying size, and a few eggs exhibited intense and uniform binding of all three lectins. Single PNA-staining of goat samples containing the five trichostrongyles species identified most eggs as H. contortus, and triple-staining showed patterns consistent with those seen for H. contortus. Binding of AAL to non-Haemonchus eggs was uniform but showed significant variations in intensity. Lesser staining eggs tended to also stain intensely with LCA, which is consistent with published binding pattern for T. circumcincta. Most eggs that AAL bound intensely to did not bind with LCA, which is consistent with published binding pattern for Trichostrongylus spp. Autofluorescence was observed with the DAPI filter-cube among most non-Haemonchus eggs. This study demonstrates the need for additional field studies to further validate the specificity of these three lectins for use in identifying eggs from the three species of trichostrongyles.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Herba Cox®, a commercial herbal compound containing extracts from Bombax malabaricum, Aegle marmelos, Anethum foeniculum, Resina salvia, Ferula asafoetida and Papaver somniferum, for the treatment of rabbit hepatic coccidiosis. Thirty rabbits were allocated into three groups (10 × 3), the G1 group served as a negative control group, G2 group (positive control group) was infected with 5 × 104 sporulated E. stiedaeoocysts and served as infected-untreated group, and G3 group was infected with 5 × 104 sporulated E. stiedaeoocysts and treated with Herba Cox®, 1 ml/liter of drinking water, starting 7 days before infection and continuing for 4 weeks post-infection. When compared to the infected group (G2), body weight and weight gain were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased, the feed conversion rate was improved and no mortality was detected in infected treated group (G3) and similar to negative control group (G1). In addition, faecal oocyst output and liver enzymes were significantly decreased. Malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, and glutathione concentrations observed in G3 were similar to those in G1. In infected-untreated rabbits (G2), the haemoglobin, lymphocytes, and CD4+/ CD8+ ratio were significantly decreased, while the total leukocyte count, percentage of heterophils, and heterophil/lymphocyte ratio were increased. Significantly more severe histopathological hepatic lesions were observed in G2 when compared to G1 and G3. In conclusion, the obtained results showed that Herba Cox® should be considered a safe and novel effective compound for the treatment of E. stiedae infection in rabbits.
