RESUMO

The performance of ethanethiol removal in an anoxic lab-scale bio-scrubber was investigated under different operating parameters and conditions for 300 days. The removal efficiency (RE) of ethanethiol was examined as a function of inlet concentration, empty bed residence time (EBRT) and spray density of irrigation. The results showed the best operation conditions and operation characteristics of the bio-scrubber for this study were at an inlet concentration of 150 mg/m3, a spray density of 0.23 m3/m2 h and an EBRT of 90 s. An average RE of 91% and elimination capacity (EC) of 24.74 g/m3 h was found for all inlet ethanethiol concentrations. Variations in spray density higher than 0.23 m3/m2 h had no effect on ethanethiol RE at different ethanethiol concentrations. The average experimental yield values were closer to the YET/NO3- theoretical value of 0.74 when the main product was elemental sulphur (So). This indicates that So and other forms of sulphur were formed rather than sulphate (SO42-) as the end product. Furthermore, growth kinetics for bio-degradation were evaluated in batch culture experiments using the Monod model, and bio-kinetic parameters of µmax, Ks, Yxs and qmax were obtained as 0.14 1/h, 1.17 mg/L, 0.52 gx/gs and 0.26 gs/gx h, respectively.

RESUMO

This study investigates the impact of transportation vehicles on air pollution emissions in Istanbul, a metropolitan city in Türkiye. The TIMES (The Integrated MARKAL-EFOM System) Model has been used to determine the current level of air pollutants coming from the transportation sector, make future estimates, and assess the impact of various scenarios on air pollution emissions. Air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, particulate matter, and non-methane volatile organic compounds are included in the model. The amount of air pollution emissions discussed in this research were 74, 68, 13, 5, and 2 kt for NOx, CO, VOC, SO2, and PM, respectively, in the base year of 2016. In 2055, these emissions have shifted to 190, 98, 26, 8, and 5 kt, respectively. This means that emissions are predicted to increase between 1.4 and 2.6 times. According to model results, individual measures could decrease potential air pollution emissions for 2055 by up to 13 %. When all of the actions done within the pollutants of the study are combined, the total amount of emissions has decreased by 30.2 %, 24.3 %, 18.8 %, 5.3 % and 21.4 % for NOx, CO, VOC, SO2, and PM, respectively. This research emphasizes how critical it is to address metropolitan areas' transportation-related air pollution. The number of such studies dealing with air pollution parameters using the TIMES Model is very few, and it is expected that this study will create important outputs for similar studies.

RESUMO

For sustainable water management, the treatment and reuse of industrial wastewater are becoming increasingly important. There have been many studies on color removal, especially from textile wastewater. However, there are deficiencies in the literature regarding highly alkaline caustic recovery and reuse in the plant. For this reason, this study examines caustic-containing textile wastewater treatment and the reuse potential of the obtained caustic chemicals with a pilot-scale ceramic membrane system. During operations, only an ultrafiltration membrane, a nanofiltration membrane, and combined ultrafiltration + nanofiltration membranes were put to use. Chemical oxygen demand, total hardness, color, total organic carbon, sodium ion concentration, and pH tests were applied to samples, and temperature and flux were recorded throughout all operations. The obtained results showed that for ultrafiltration + nanofiltration cycles, the overall average removal efficiencies were 67, 71, 42, and 92% for total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, total hardness, and color respectively. For only ultrafiltration cycles, the overall average removal efficiencies were 22, 36, 25, and 63% for total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, total hardness, and color, respectively. Sodium values in the input wastewater were around 12 mg/L on average, and nanofiltration membrane output values changed to between 7 and 11 mg/L. Based on the sodium concentration differences between inflow and outflow samples, the permeate of ceramic membrane systems has potential for reuse in facilities.

RESUMO

The removal performance of dimethyl sulphide (DMS) by anoxic laboratory-scale bio-scrubber was studied under different operation conditions for 315 days. DMS removal in bio-scrubber system was performed by controlling and changing the operation parameters, including inlet concentration, empty bed residence time (EBRT) and spraying density (SD) of irrigation. Best conditions in the system were achieved for SD of 0.18 m3/m2 h within EBRT of 40 s at an inlet gas concentration of 150 mg/m3 in which 93% of waste gas stream was removed in the bio-scrubber column and bio-degradation in the bio-reactor tank led to 89% of DMS removal from the transferred bio-reactor, while 91.5% of input chemical oxygen demand (COD) was successfully removed. The use of closer values of the average experimental yield to the theoretical value (YNO3/NO3 -) of 0.74 led to the production of elemental sulphur (S°) and other sulphur forms rather than sulphate (SO42-) , which was also was recognized as a pale-yellow coloured substance of S° that appeared within the biomass.

RESUMO

Many studies have discussed the biotreatment of ethanethiol (ET) under aerobic conditions. However, O2 free conditions offer bio-conversion of ET gas into elemental sulphur and/or sulphate using [Formula: see text] as electron acceptor, and this has been not studied. In this study, an anoxic biotrickling filter was tested in lab-scale conditions with ET/[Formula: see text] ratio 0.74 and 0.34 mole/mole to remove malodorous ET waste gas. The study examined the effect of three operational parameters: ET inlet concentrations (150, 300, 800, and 1500 mg/m3), trickling velocities (0.12, 0.18, 0.24, 0.3, and 0.45 m/h), and empty bed residence times (30, 60, 90, and 120 s). It found that the effect of trickling velocity on removal efficiency depended on inlet concentrations; 0.24 m/h trickling velocity resulted in efficient ET removal (higher than 90.8% for 150 mg/m3 of inlet concentration) while 0.45 m/h trickling velocity could only achieve a removal of 80.6% for 1500 mg/m3 of inlet concentration at fixed EBRT 60 s. Increasing the EBRT up to 60 s was adequate to achieve removal efficiency, i.e. 92 and 80% for ET inlet concentrations 150 and 1500 mg/m3 respectively, and the maximum elimination capacity was 75.18 g/m3/h at 0.45 m/h. Overall, the anoxic conditions enhanced the low oxidation rates of ET in an anoxic biotrickling filter despite mass transfer limitations and poor solubility of ET.

RESUMO

The broad objective of this study was to develop CO2, PM, SOx, CO, NOx, VOC, NH3 and N2O emission inventory of organic and inorganic chemicals, mineral products, metallurgical, petroleum refining, wood products, food industries of Turkey for 2010 for both co]ntrolled and uncontrolled conditions. In this study, industries were investigated in 7 main categories and 53 sub-sectors and a representative number of pollutants per sub-sector were considered. Each industry was evaluated in terms of emitted emissions only from industrial processes, and fuel combustion activities were excluded (except cement industry). The study employed an approach designed in four stages; identification of key categories; activity data & emission factor search; emission factor analyzing; calculation of emissions. Emission factor analyzing required aggregate and firm analysis of sectors and sub-sectors and deeper insights into underlying specific production methods used in the industry to decide on the most representative emission factor. Industry specific abatement technologies were considered by using open-source documents and industry specific reports. Regarding results of this study, mineral industry and iron & steel industry were determined as important contributors of industrial emissions in Turkey in 2010. Respectively, organic chemicals, petroleum refining, and pulp & paper industries had serious contributions to Turkey's air pollutant emission inventory from industrial processes. The results showed that calculated CO2 emissions for year 2010 was 55,124,263 t, also other emissions were 48,853 t PM, 24,533 t SOx, 79,943 t NOx, 31,908 t VOC, 454 t NH3 and 2264 t N2O under controlled conditions.

RESUMO

This paper focuses on the toxicity evaluation and source apportionment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in three monitoring stations in Istanbul, Turkey. A total of 326 airborne samples were collected and analyzed for 16 PAHs and Total Suspended Particles (TSP) for the period of September 2006-December 2007. The total average PAH concentrations were 100.7±61.3, 84.6±46.7 and 25.1±13.3 ng m(-3) and the TSP concentrations were 101.2±53.2, 152.3±99.1, 49.8±18.6 µg m(-3) for URB1, URB2 and RUR stations, respectively. Benzo(a)Pyren (BaP) toxic equivalency factors to PAH concentration values were calculated indicating that the health risk of BaP and DiBenz(a,h)Anthracene (markers of traffic emissions) have the highest contribution compared to all of the other species measured at the sampling sites. In order to determine PAH sources, two different source apportionment techniques were applied to the measurements; diagnostic ratios (DR) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). The results of the two applications were compatible indicating the vehicle emissions - especially diesel engines - as the major source for urban stations.
