RESUMO

Ternary CuO/AgO/FSZr photocatalysts were fabricated via the hydrothermal and electrochemical methods with three different CuO loading (1, 3 and 5 wt%), indicated as 1CuO/AgO/FSZr, 3CuO/AgO/FSZr and 5CuO/AgO/FSZr. The photocatalytic reaction was tested towards simultaneous chromium (VI) photoreduction and p-cresol photooxidation and the performance in order as follow: 3CuO/AgO/FSZr > 5CuO/AgO/FSZr > 1CuO/AgO/FSZr > AgO/FSZr > FSZr. CuO/AgO/FSZr photocatalysts showed an improvement in photocatalytic activity compared to AgO/FSZr and FSZr due to the reduction potential of chromium (VI) aligned closer to the conduction band of CuO and provided abundant free active electrons (e-) and holes (h+) with efficient transportation and migration. Interestingly, the 3CuO/AgO/FSZr was established as the best photocatalyst with 98% reduction of chromium (VI) and 83% oxidation of p-cresol simultaneously, owing to its strong corporation between the metal oxides and support and higher total pore volume. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood model were employed for kinetics which followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics model well. Based on the simultaneous photocatalytic mechanism, chromium (VI) and p-cresol were directly reduced and oxidized by e- and h+, respectively. The response surface methodology (RSM) discovered that the quadratic term initial concentration of chromium (VI) is the main significant factor in photocatalytic performance. The optimum parameters for simultaneous photoredox of chromium (VI) and p-cresol predicted from RSM are 9.6 mg L-1 of chromium (VI) concentration, 9.8 mg L-1 of p-cresol concentration and 0.32 g L-1 of catalyst dosage. Under these conditions the error between the predicted and experimental values is only 3.7%. The 3CuO/AgO/FSZr sustained the photocatalytic performance after reused for five cycles and could oxidized various organic pollutants as well as reduced chromium (VI) simultaneously.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is increasingly used for the clinical diagnosis of infectious diseases, but there is a paucity of data regarding the application of mNGS in the early diagnosis of infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical application value of mNGS in the pathogenic diagnosis of IPN. METHODS: Forty-two patients with suspected IPN were prospectively and consecutively enrolled from August 2019 to August 2021. Blood samples were collected for mNGS and microbial culture simultaneously during fever (T ≥ 38.5 °C). For patients who had indications of surgical interventions, peri-pancreatic specimens were collected for mNGS and microbial culture simultaneously during the first surgical intervention to confirm IPN. The clinical performance of mNGS and microbial culture were compared. RESULTS: A total of 21 patients (50.0%) were confirmed to have IPN during hospitalization. The sensitivity of blood mNGS was significantly higher than blood culture (95.2% vs. 23.8%, P < 0.001) in diagnosing IPN. The negative predictive value of blood mNGS was 90.0%. The turnaround time of mNGS was significantly shorter than that of microbial culture [(37.70 ± 1.44) vs. (115.23 ± 8.79) h, P < 0.01] and the average costs of mNGS accounted for 1.7% of the average total cost of hospitalization. The survival analysis demonstrates that the positive blood mNGS result was not associated with increased mortality (P = 0.119). CONCLUSIONS: With more valuable diagnostic performance and shorter turnaround time, clinical mNGS represents a potential step forward in the early diagnosis of IPN.

RESUMO

With the tremendous development of the economy and industry, the pollution of water is becoming more serious due to the excessive chemical wastes that need to remove thru reduction or oxidation reactions. Simultaneous removal of dual pollutants via photocatalytic redox reaction has been tremendously explored in the last five years due to effective decontamination of pollutants compared to a single pollutants system. In a photocatalysis mechanism, the holes in the valence band can remarkably promote the oxidation of a pollutant. At the same time, photoexcited electrons are also consumed for the reduction reaction. The synergistic between the reduction and oxidation inhibits the recombination of electron-hole pairs extending their lifetime. In this review, the binary pollutants that selectively removed via photocatalysis reduction or oxidation are classified according to heavy metal-organic pollutant (HM/OP), heavy metal-heavy metal (HM/HM) and organic-organic pollutants (OP/OP). The intrinsic between the pollutants was explained in three different mechanisms including inhibition of electron-hole recombination, ligand to metal charge transfer and electrostatic attraction. Several strategies for the enhancement of this treatment method which are designation of catalysts, pH of mixed pollutants and addition of additive were discussed. This review offers a recent perspective on the development of photocatalysis system for industrial applications.

RESUMO

A novel Z-scheme titania loaded on fibrous silica ceria (Ti-FSC) was triumphantly fabricated via hydrothermal followed by electrolysis method and evaluated for the visible-light degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). Noticeably, Ti-FSC exhibits as an efficient photocatalyst for CIP photodegradation with 95% as followed by titania loaded on fibrous silica (Ti-FS) (68%), Ti-CeO2 (35%), FSC (47%), FS (22%), and CeO2 (17%). The combination of the inherent merits of Ti loaded on FSC is able to realize the crucial role of Ce in harnessing the high dispersion of Ti, which could beneficial for improving the performance proven by XRD, FESEM, TEM and FTIR. Consequently, high dispersion of Ti on FSC has worthwhile towards the interaction of the Si-O-Ti, Ce-O-Ti, and Si-O-Ti, which could enhance the CIP photodegradation by providing more surface defects, narrowing the band gap, improving electron-hole separation and suppressing electron-hole recombination that revealed by XPS, UV-vis/DRS, Nyquist plots and PL studies, respectively. The scavenger study revealed that the controlling species in the system was hydroxyl radical and holes. A potential Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism for Ti-FSC was deduced from the band structure analysis. The possible photodegradation pathway was proposed based on GCMS analysis. Besides, the acceptable reusability, which exceeded 90% of degradation indicated the great application potential of Z-scheme Ti-FSC in wastewater treatment and others application.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Significant conflicts regarding prophylactic antifungal treatment in acute pancreatitis (AP) exist among current literatures and guidelines. The key to resolving this controversial issue is to identify risk factors for intra-abdominal fungal infection (AFI) among patients with AP. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective cohort of 826 patients with AP between January 2014 to December 2019 was analysed to study the risk factors of AFI. RESULTS: Of the 826 patients with AP, 10 patients (1.2%) developed AFI, including 2 cases in moderately severe AP (MSAP) and 8 in severe AP (SAP). The incidence of AFI was significantly higher in patients with SAP compared with MSAP and mild AP (10.3 vs. 0.8% vs. 0, P < 0.001). SAP patients with AFI were more likely to have multiple organ failure (MOF) (OR = 13.4; 95% CI 1.6-115.5), organ failure lasting more than 1 week (OR = 5.1; 95% CI 1.0-27.0), and surgical intervention within first week of admission (OR = 7.4; 95% CI 1.0-53.6). Multivariable analysis identified MOF (OR = 14.3; 95% CI 1.2-173.8) as the only independent risk factor of AFI. CONCLUSION: MOF might be the indication of prophylactic antifungal therapy in patients with AP.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intra-abdominal fungal infection (AFI) and candidemia are common in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP), but with limited and conflicting reports on their clinical impacts. This study aims to evaluate the clinical impacts of AFI and candidemia in infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN). METHODS: A single-centre, prospective cohort including 235 consecutive patients with IPN between January 2010 and September 2020 was analysed to study the clinical impacts of AFI and candidemia. RESULTS: Of the 235 patients with IPN, 69 patients (29.4%) developed AFI and 13 patients (5.5%) developed candidemia. AFI was associated with higher intestinal leakage rate (27.5% vs 12.7%, P = .006), higher pancreatic fistula rate (53.6% vs 34.3%, P = .006) and longer hospital stays (72 vs 58 days, P = .003), but with similar mortality rate compared with patients without AFI (23.2% vs 24.7%, P = .806). However, candidemia was associated with significantly higher mortality rate compared with patients without candidemia (69.2% vs 21.6%, P < .001). Patients with candidemia had higher rate of multiple organ failure and AFI (69.2% vs 36.5%, P = .018; 69.2% vs 27.0%, P = .001, respectively). Multivariable analysis showed that age ≥ 50 years (OR = 2.8; 95% CI, 1.3-5.8; P = .007), severe category (OR = 11.2; 95% CI, 3.5-35.7; P < .001), multidrug-resistant organisms infection (OR = 2.5; 95% CI, 1.0-6.2; P = .039), candidemia (OR = 11.8; 95% CI, 2.5-56.5; P = .002), step-down surgical approach (OR = 3.2; 95% CI, 1.5-7.0; P = .004) were the independent predictors associated with higher mortality in IPN patients. CONCLUSION: Although AFI did not increase the mortality of IPN, patients with candidemia carried significantly higher mortality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a deadly malignancy of the liver, is considered the third leading reason behind cancer deaths. It is more frequent in men than in women of ages above 50. Liver disease, leading to liver cirrhosis (LC), is mostly caused by alcoholism abuse, reaction diseases of the liver, or viral hepatitis B or C infection. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is considered an effective pro-inflammatory cytokine, which plays a crucial role in the host defense mechanism. Its level is higher in HCC patients than in LC cases, indicating that tumor cells increase the production of cytokines. The X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) gene is a major DNA repair gene. It acts as a scaffold of various activities that are concerned in the repairing method by interacting with components of base excision repair. This study aims to measure the serum concentrations of IL6 and C-reactive protein (CRP) and investigate whether XRCC1 Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln polymorphisms are related to HCC disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Whole-blood DNA was extracted from 123 HCC patients and 123 healthy volunteers. Tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system was performed in the detection of XRCC1 Arg399Gln and Arg194Trp polymorphisms. RESULTS: Serum concentration levels of IL-6 and CRP are significantly higher in patients with HCC than in control subjects. The allelic and genotype frequency distributions of XRCC1 (Arg399Gln and Arg194Trp) are significantly increased in HCC cases compared to healthy volunteers. CONCLUSION: Arg/Gln, Arg/Trp, Gln/Gln, and Trp/Trp genotypes are associated with higher risk HCC than the Arg/Arg genotype.

RESUMO

This study aims to investigate the feasibility of treating olive mill waste water (OMWW) by activated sludge pilot (AS) after its high dilution (1%) by urban waste water (UWW) and to study the effect of polyphenol compounds on the biomass during the treatment. Specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR), mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total polyphenols, were followed up over 100 days. In spite of the polyphenols' high concentration (up to 128 mg·L-1), successful biomass growth of 7.12 g MLVSS.L -1 and activity were achieved. Most of the bacteria (Pseudomonas sp., Klebsiella oxytoca, Citrobacter fereundii, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus sp.) and fungi (Trichoderma sp., Rhizopus sp., Aspergillus niger, Penicillium sp., Fusarium sp., Alternaria) identified in the aerobic basin during the stabilization stage were known to be resistant to OMWW and showed effective adaptation of the biomass to polyphenols in high concentration. COD and polyphenols were highly eliminated (90%, 92% respectively). The sludge volume index in the pilot settling tank was almost constant at around 120 mL.g -1. This suggests the possibility of managing OMWW by simple injection at a given percentage in already functioning conventional AS treating UWW.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) is becoming a serious worldwide threat to public health. However, the impact of MDROs on the outcomes of the patients with infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the roles of MDROs in IPN. METHODS: A prospectively maintained database of 188 patients with IPN between January 2010 and May 2019 was analyzed. The microbiology profile of organisms isolated from wall-off necrosis (WON) was specifically investigated to correlate with the outcomes of the patients. RESULTS: Of the 188 patients with IPN, 108 patients (57.4%) had MDROs detected in aspirates from WON. Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) accounted for 43.5% of the MDROs isolated (60/138), followed by Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumanii (CRAB) (34.8%, 48/138) and Escherichia coli producing an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBLp) (6.5%, 9/138). MDROs infection was associated with higher mortality (35.2% vs 11.3%, P < 0.001), higher rate of hemorrhage (36.1% vs 11.3%, P < 0.001), longer intensive care unit (ICU) stay (23 vs 12 days, P < 0.001), longer hospital stay (68 vs 51 days, P = 0.001) and more hospitalization expenses (45,190 ±â€¯31,680 vs 26,965 ±â€¯17,167 $, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis of predictors of mortality indicated that MDROs infection (OR = 2.6; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0-6.5; P = 0.042), age ≥ 50 years (OR = 2.6; 95% CI, 1.2-5.8; P = 0.016), severe category (OR = 2.9; 95% CI, 1.1-8.0; P = 0.035), bloodstream infection (OR = 3.4; 95% CI, 1.5-7.6; P = 0.049), step-down surgical approach (OR = 2.7; 95% CI, 1.1-6.2; P = 0.023) were significant factors. CONCLUSIONS: MDROs infection was prevalent among patients with IPN and associated with adverse clinical outcomes and increased mortality.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to provide updated and comprehensive evidence on the validity and feasibility of screening tools for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia among the elderly at primary healthcare level. STUDY DESIGN: A review of articles was performed. METHODS: A search strategy was used by using electronic bibliographic databases including PubMed, Embase and CENTRAL for published studies and reference list of published studies. The articles were exported to a bibliographic database for further screening process. Two reviewers worked independently to screen results and extract data from the included studies. Any discrepancies were resolved and confirmed by the consensus of all authors. RESULTS: There were three screening approaches for detecting MCI and dementia - screening by a healthcare provider, screening by a self-administered questionnaire and caretaker informant screening. Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was the most common and preferable tool for MCI screening (sensitivity [Sn]: 81-97%; specificity [Sp]: 60-86%), whereas Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE) was the preferable tool for dementia screening (Sn: 79-100%; Sp: 86%). CONCLUSION: This systematic review found that there are three screening approaches for detecting early dementia and MCI at primary health care. ACE and MoCA are recommended tools for screening of dementia and MCI, respectively.

RESUMO

Fibrous silica-titania (FST) catalysts were synthesized by microemulsion followed by silica seed-crystal crystallization methods under various molar ratios of toluene to water (T/W). The catalysts were characterized by XRD, UV-DRS, FESEM, TEM, AFM, N2 adsorption-desorption, FTIR, and ESR. The results revealed that altering the T/W ratio affected the growth of the silica and titania and led to different size, fiber density, silica-titania structure, and number of hydroxyl groups, as well as oxygen vacancies in the FSTs, which altered their behavior toward subsequent application. Photodegradation of ibuprofen (IBP) are in the following order: FST(6:1) (90%) > FST(5:1) (84%) > FST(7:1) (79%) > commercial TiO2 (67%). A kinetics study using Langmuir-Hinshelwood model illustrated that the photodegradation followed the pseudo-first-order and adsorption was the rate-limiting step. Optimization by response surface methodology (RSM) showed that the pH, initial concentration, and catalyst dosage were the remarkable parameters in photodegradation of IBP. The FST (6:1) maintained its photocatalytic activities for up to five cycles reaction without serious catalyst deactivation, and was also able to degrade other endocrine-disrupting chemicals, indicating its potential use for the treatment of those chemicals in wastewater.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Rising anti-double-stranded (ds) DNA titers have been shown by some, but not all, studies to be predictive of disease flares in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We hypothesized that a rapid and substantial rise in anti-dsDNA titer (anti-dsDNA surge) would be a good predictor of a clinically important SLE flare. METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted in an academic rheumatology practice setting. Our primary endpoint was the occurrence of a severe SELENA-SLEDAI (SS) flare within six months of an anti-dsDNA surge, and secondary endpoints were mild/moderate SS flares, as well as BILAG A and B renal flares. Cases were identified as those patients whose disease course included a surge of anti-dsDNA, defined as an increase of anti-dsDNA titer by the Crithidia luciliae immunofluorescence (CLIF) assay from 0 to 3+/4+, or from 1+ to 4+, within a period of less than 12 months. The date of the anti-dsDNA surge was defined as Day 0. Two control SLE patients were identified for each case and were matched for age, sex, race, and visit date closest to case Day 0, but without an anti-dsDNA surge. Logistic regression models were used to detect associations between anti-dsDNA surges and severe SS flares. RESULT: A higher proportion of cases, compared to controls, experienced a severe SS flare within six months of Day 0 (OR 6.3 (95% confidence intervals 2.0-19.9), p = 0.02). Associations with all flares and hospitalizations for flares were also observed. However, an anti-dsDNA surge was not predictive of a renal flare. CONCLUSION: An anti-dsDNA surge predicts the subsequent development of a severe SS flare within six months. Physicians should closely monitor such patients and treat promptly at the first sign of clinical activity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Standard tools are not sensitive enough for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) early detection. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of dickkopf-1 (DKK1) and soluble Axl (sAxl) and their combined for early differentiating of HCC from premalignant benign liver diseases. METHODS: A total of 210 chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients (55 fibrotic, 45 cirrhotic and 110 HCC) were enrolled. Both DKK1 and sAxl were tested using ELISA for all participants. RESULTS: HCC patients were accompanied by a significant increase (P<0.05) in DKK1 (5.38±2.05 ng/mL) and sAxl (178.02±49.39 ng/mL) compared to patients with fibrosis (2.16±0.6, 97.63±19.71 ng/mL, respectively) and cirrhosis (2.62±0.8, 121.84±34.66 ng/mL, respectively). Both DKK1 (AUC=0.852) and sAxl (AUC=0.882) had a good diagnostic accuracy in separating HCC from all non-HCC patients. Multiplying DKK1 with sAXL yielded values that significantly (P=0.0001) increased in patients who developed HCC (674.3 (434.2-1413.9)) versus fibrotic (204.9 (161.7-262)) and cirrhotic (254.4 (205.4-343.7)) patients. This model improves HCC diagnostic performances [AUC=0.921; sensitivity 90.9%, specificity 87%, PPV 88.5%, NPV 89.7% and efficiency 89.1%]. Elevated DKK1×sAxl values were associated with aggressive tumor features including multiple nodules, large size, Child-Pugh and BCLC late stages. CONCLUSIONS: combined use of DKK1×sAxl is simple and feasible HCC diagnostic model that could enhance HCC diagnostic accuracy and could replace AFP in follow up of patients with premalignant diseases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Several noninvasive predictive models were developed to substitute liver biopsy for fibrosis assessment. AIM: To evaluate the diagnostic value of fibronectin which reflect extracellular matrix metabolism and standard liver functions tests which reflect alterations in hepatic functions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients (n = 145) were evaluated using ROC curves and stepwise multivariate discriminant analysis (MDA) and was validated in 180 additional patients. Liver biochemical profile including transaminases, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, albumin, complete blood count were estimated. Fibronectin concentration was determined using monoclonal antibody and ELISA. RESULTS: A novel index named fibronectin discriminant score (FDS) based on fibronectin, APRI and albumin was developed. FDS produced areas under ROC curves (AUC) of 0.91 for significant fibrosis and 0.81 for advanced fibrosis. The FDS correctly classified 79% of the significant liver fibrosis patients (F2-F4) with 87% sensitivity and 75% specificity. The relative risk [odds ratio (OR)] of having significant liver fibrosis using the cut-off values determined by ROC curve analyses were 6.1 for fibronectin, 4.9 for APRI, and 4.2 for albumin. FDS predicted liver fibrosis with an OR of 16.8 for significant fibrosis and 8.6 for advanced fibrosis. The FDS had similar AUC and OR in the validation group to the estimation group without statistically significant difference. CONCLUSION: FDS predicted liver fibrosis with high degree of accuracy, potentially decreasing the number of liver biopsy required.

RESUMO

Herbicides such as atrazine and humus substances such as fulvic acid are widely used in agricultural sector. They can be traced in surface and groundwater around the agriculture field at concentrations beyond the approved limit due to their mobility and persistence. Bismuth-based photocatalysts activated by visible light are potential materials for removing various organic pollutants from water bodies. These photocatalysts can also be suitable candidates for developing a hybrid membrane with anti-fouling properties. In this study, Bi2WO6 nanoparticles were synthesized via the hydrothermal method and integrated into the cellulose acetate (CA), polyetherimide (PEI), polysulfone (PSF) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymers via physical blending approach. The hybrid membranes were then characterized by FTIR, XPS and FESEM to confirm the chemical bonding, chemical composition and surface morphology of Bi2WO6. Thus, the pure water flux of CA (35.6 L m-2 h-1), PEI (46.56 L m-2 h-1), PSF (6.84 L m-2 h-1), and PVDF (68.47 L m-2 h-1) hybrid membranes has significantly enhanced than the pristine CA, PEI, PSF and PVDF membranes. The significant rejection of atrazine-fulvic acid was observed with hybrid membranes in the order of CA (84.1%) > PVDF (72.7%) > PEI (47.8%) > PSF (37.2%), and these membranes have shown an excellent flux recovery ratio than pristine membranes. Further, electrochemical quantification studies were performed to analyze the removal efficiency of atrazine-fulvic acid from water. In this present work, GO-modified SPE was employed for electrochemical sensing studies. The resultant CA hybrid membrane achieved removal efficiency of 84.08% for atrazine. It was observed that the Bi2WO6 established strong bonding with CA, and PVDF membranes, thus showing a significant removal efficiency and FRR than other hybrid and pristine membranes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We performed a cross-sectional study in Indonesia to evaluate the performance of a single-visit approach of cervical cancer screening, using visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), histology and cryotherapy in low-resource settings. METHODS: Women having limited access to health-care facilities were screened by trained doctors using VIA. If the test was positive, biopsies were taken and when eligible, women were directly treated with cryotherapy. Follow-up was performed with VIA and cytology after 6 months. When cervical cancer was suspected or diagnosed, women were referred. The positivity rate, positive predictive value (PPV) and approximate specificity of the VIA test were calculated. The detection rate for cervical lesions was given. RESULTS: Screening results were completed in 22 040 women, of whom 92.7% had never been screened. Visual inspection with acetic acid was positive in 4.4%. The PPV of VIA to detect CIN I or greater and CIN II or greater was 58.7% and 29.7%, respectively. The approximate specificity was 98.1%, and the detection rate for CIN I or greater was 2.6%. CONCLUSION: The single-visit approach cervical cancer screening performed well, showing See and Treat is a promising way to reduce cervical cancer in Indonesia.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis (IFDVT) is an independent risk factor for recurrent DVT. It has been observed that recurrent DVT correlates with residual thrombus. This study evaluates whether risk of recurrence is related to the amount of residual thrombus following catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) for IFDVT. METHODS: Patients who underwent CDT for IFDVT had their degree of lysis quantified by a reader blind to the patients' long-term clinical outcome. Patients were classified into two groups, ≥50% and <50% residual thrombus. Recurrence was defined as a symptomatic presentation with image verification of new or additional thrombus. RESULTS: A total of 75 patients underwent CDT for IFDVT. Median follow-up was 35.9 months. Sixty-eight patients (91%) had no evidence of recurrence and seven (9%) developed recurrence. Of the patients who had ≥50% (mean 80%) residual thrombus, 50% (4/8) experienced recurrence, but in those with <50% (mean 35%) residual thrombus, only 5% (3/67) had recurrent DVT (P = 0.0014). CONCLUSION: The burden of residual thrombus at completion of CDT correlates with the risk of DVT recurrence. Patients having CDT for IFDVT had a lower risk of recurrence than expected. Successful clearing of acute clot in IFDVT patients significantly reduces the recurrence risk compared to patients with a large residual thrombus burden.

RESUMO

Life cycle assessment was carried out for a conventional wooden furniture set produced in Mardan division of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan during 2018-19. Primary data regarding inputs and outputs were collected through questionnaire surveys from 100 conventional wooden furniture set manufacturers, 50 in district Mardan and 50 in district Swabi. In the present study, cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment approach was applied for a functional unit of one conventional wooden furniture set. Production weighted average data were modelled in the environmental impacts modelling software i.e., SimaPro v.8.5. The results showed that textile used in sofa set, wood preservative for polishing and preventing insects attack and petrol used in generator had the highest contribution to all the environmental impact categories evaluated. Total cumulative energy demand for wooden furniture set manufactured was 30,005 MJ with most of the energy acquired from non-renewable fossil fuel resources.

RESUMO

Nanostructured photocatalysts commonly offered opportunities to solve issues scrutinized with the environmental challenges caused by steep population growth and rapid urbanization. This photocatalyst is a controllable characteristic, which can provide humans with a clean and sustainable ecosystem. Over the last decades, one of the current thriving research focuses on visible-light-driven CeO2-based photocatalysts due to their superior characteristics, including unique fluorite-type structure, rigid framework, and facile reducing oxidizing properties of cerium's tetravalent (Ce4+) and trivalent (Ce3+) valence states. Notwithstanding, owing to its inherent wide energy gap, the solar energy utilization efficiency is low, which limits its application in wastewater treatment. Numerous modifications of CeO2 have been employed to enhance photodegradation performances, such as metals and non-metals doping, adding support materials, and coupling with another semiconductor. Besides, all these doping will form a different heterojunction and show a different way of electron-hole migration. Compared to conventional heterojunction, advanced heterojunction types such as p-n heterojunction, Z-scheme, Schottky junction, and surface plasmon resonance effect exhibit superior performance for degradation owing to their excellent charge carrier separation, and the reaction occurs at a relatively higher redox potential. This review attends to providing deep insights on heterojunction mechanisms and the latest progress on photodegradation of various contaminants in wastewater using CeO2-based photocatalysts. Hence, making the CeO2 photocatalyst more foresee and promising to further development and research.

RESUMO

The coexistence of pharmaceutical compounds and heavy metals in the aquatic environment has resulted in complications in the treatment process and thus, causing uproar among the citizens. The radical-based photocatalysis technology has aroused as an excellent method to eliminate both heavy metal and pharmaceutical compounds in the water. Herein, reported the utilization of the microemulsion technique for the preparation of nanoporous fibrous silica-molybdenum oxide (FSMo) towards simultaneous photocatalytic abatement of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and tetracycline (TC). The FESEM analysis showed the spherical morphology of the FSMo catalyst with dendrimeric silica fiber. The synthesized FSMo catalyst exhibited narrowed bandgap, high crystallinity, and well Mo element dispersion for enhanced photo-redox of Cr(VI) and TC. Remarkably, simultaneous remediation of the Cr(VI) and TC over FSMo demonstrated superior photocatalytic efficiency, 69% and 75%, respectively, than in the individual system, possibly due to the effective separation of photoinduced charges. The introduction of the Mo element to the silica framework via microemulsion technique demonstrated better dispersion of Mo compared to the incipient wetness impregnation method and thus, yielded higher photocatalytic activity towards simultaneous removal of TC and Cr(VI). Besides, quenching experiments revealed the electrons and holes as the active species that play a dominant role in the simultaneous photo-redox of Cr(VI) and TC. Lastly, the FSMo catalyst demonstrated high stability after four continuous cycles of simultaneous photocatalysis reactions, implying its potential as a suitable material for practical wastewater treatments.
