Doping of organic semiconductors: impact of dopant strength and electronic coupling.

Molecular doping: The standard model for molecular p-doping of organic semiconductors (OSCs) assumes integer charge transfer between OSC and dopant. This is in contrast to an alternative model based on intermolecular complex formation instead. By systematically varying the acceptor strength it was possible to discriminate the two models. The latter is clearly favored, suggesting strategies for the chemical design of more efficient molecular dopants.

A metal-directed self-assembled electroactive cage with bis(pyrrolo)tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF) side walls.

A straightforward synthesis of a bis(pyrrolo)tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF)-based tetratopic ligand bearing four pyridyl units is described. The first example of a TTF-based self-assembled cage has been produced from this redox-active ligand through metal-directed synthesis with a cis-coordinated square-planar Pt(II) complex. The resulting cage corresponds to a trigonal-prismatic structure, as shown by X-ray crystallography. A UV-vis titration indicated that the electron-rich cavity can be used to incorporate one molecule of tetrafluorotetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQF(4)).

N-aryl pyrrolo-tetrathiafulvalene based ligands: synthesis and metal coordination.

A straightforward general synthetic access to N-aryl-1,3-dithiolo[4,5-c]pyrrole-2-thione derivatives 6 from acetylenedicarbaldehyde monoacetal is depicted. In addition to their potentiality as precursors to dithioalkyl-pyrrole derivatives, thiones 6 are key building blocks to N-aryl monopyrrolo-tetrathiafulvalene (MPTTF) derivatives 10. X-ray structures of four of these thiones intermediates, reminiscent of the corresponding MPTTF derivatives, are provided. When the aryl group is a binding pyridyl unit, the MPTTF derivative 10a can coordinate M(II) salts (M = Pt, Pd). The first examples of metal-directed orthogonal MPTTF-based dimers 11-14, obtained through coordination of 10a to cis-blocked square planar Pt or Pd complexes are described. Studies on the parameters influencing the dimer construction are presented, as well as first recognition properties of the resulting electron-rich clip for C(60).

Synthesis and supramolecular organization of regioregular polythiophene block oligomers.

The self-assembly of functional polythiophenes was studied by a bottom-up approach "from molecule to polymer". The synthesis and the X-ray structure of 2,5-dibromo-3-styryl and 3-2',3',4',5',6'-pentafluorostyryl-thiophenes revealed a supramolecular arrangement controlled by pi-pi interactions between the aromatic rings. A [2 + 2] photocyclization reaction in the solid state of (E)-1-2',5'-dibromo-3'-thienyl-2-pentafluorophenylethene triggers the formation of a rare cycloadduct comprising thiophene rings. The X-ray analysis confirmed its rctt stereochemistry. The synthesis of P3HT-b-P3ST and P3HT-b-P3STF block oligomers was achieved by a GRIM method in good yields. An indirect proof of well-defined nanostructured organization was provided by the partial photocyclization of pendant styryl moieties under UV irradiation.

Monitoring the formation of TTF dimers by Na+ complexation.

The formation of the two dimeric species [(TTF)2]+* and (TTF+*)2 can be monitored by complexation of Na+ on a calix[4]arene-TTF assembly.

X-ray structural investigation of nonsymmetrically and symmetrically alkylated [1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene derivatives in bulk and thin films.

A detailed structural study of the bulk and thin film phases observed for two potential high-performance organic semiconductors has been carried out. The molecules are based on [1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene (BTBT) as conjugated core and octyl side groups, which are anchored either symmetrically at both sides of the BTBT core (C8-BTBT-C8) or nonsymmetrically at one side only (C8-BTBT). Thin films of different thickness (8-85 nm) have been prepared by spin-coating for both systems and analyzed by combining specular and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. In the case of C8-BTBT-C8, the known crystal structure obtained from single-crystal investigations is observed within all thin films, down to a film thickness of 9 nm. In the case of C8-BTBT, the crystal structure of the bulk phase has been determined from X-ray powder diffraction data with a consistent matching of experimental and calculated X-ray diffraction patterns (Rwp = 5.8%). The packing arrangement of C8-BTBT is similar to that of C8-BTBT-C8, that is, consisting of a lamellar structure with molecules arranged in a "herringbone" fashion, yet with lamellae composed of two head-to-head (or tail-to-tail as the structure is periodic) superimposed molecules instead of only one molecule for C8-BTBT-C8. As for C8-BTBT-C8, we demonstrate that the same phase is observed in bulk and thin films for C8-BTBT whatever the film thickness investigated.

Synthesis and characterization of isomerically pure anti- and syn-anthradiindole derivatives.

Synthesis, isolation, and characterization of isomerically pure syn- and anti-anthradiindole (ADI) derivatives are described. The anti- and syn-ADI structures are demonstrated by (13)C NMR spectroscopy and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The spectroscopic and electrochemical properties as well as the stability of these newly synthesized π-conjugated systems are evaluated and supported by quantum-chemical calculations.

A BPTTF-based self-assembled electron-donating triangle capable of C60 binding.

A kinetically stable self-assembled redox-active triangle is isolated. The resulting electron-donating cavity, which incorporates three BPTTF units, exhibits a remarkable binding ability for electron-deficient C(60), supported by a favorable combination of structural and electronic features.

Dimers of anthrathiophene and anthradithiophene derivatives: synthesis and characterization.

Synthesis, isolation, and characterization of derivatives of an anthrathiophene dimer (TOTBAT) and of anthradithiophene oligomers (ADTO), possessing octylthiophene units on their backbone, are described. These semiconductors are prepared through oxidative copper(II) chloride coupling. The spectroscopic properties and stability of these newly synthesized semiconductors were evaluated and supported by quantum-chemical calculations.

Synthesis of isomerically pure anti-anthradithiophene derivatives.

The regiospecific total synthesis and characterization of anti-isomers of 2,8-dialkylanthradithiophenes are described. The "anti" structure of the ADT derivatives is demonstrated by (13)C NMR as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction.

In situ characterisation of a microorganism surface by Raman microspectroscopy: the shell of Ascaris eggs.

Intestinal nematodes are very common human parasites and a single species, Ascaris lumbricoïdes, is estimated to infect a quarter of the world's population. A sticky external layer covers their eggs. This work shows that Raman vibrational confocal spectroscopy is able to give information on the biochemical composition of the shell of Ascaris eggs. The biochemical localised characterisation of Ascaris eggs was performed directly on the eggs in their aqueous environment. The studied parasites came from two origins: dissections of adult females and extractions from biosolid sludges. The presence of mucopolysaccharides, proteins and chitin in the shell was demonstrated. The presence of ascaroside compounds was shown particularly via the narrow and intense bands from the organised long CH2 chains. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the latter have been observed in Raman vibrational spectra of microorganisms. Hydration of the shell was different depending on the intensity of the colour of the sludge eggs. Knowledge of the biochemical structural properties of egg surfaces would be useful to understand the egg adhesion phenomena on vegetables contaminated by reused wastewater.
