RESUMO

We present a precision analysis of the ^{136}Xe two-neutrino ßß electron spectrum above 0.8 MeV, based on high-statistics data obtained with the KamLAND-Zen experiment. An improved formalism for the two-neutrino ßß rate allows us to measure the ratio of the leading and subleading 2νßß nuclear matrix elements (NMEs), ξ_{31}^{2ν}=-0.26_{-0.25}^{+0.31}. Theoretical predictions from the nuclear shell model and the majority of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) calculations are consistent with the experimental limit. However, part of the ξ_{31}^{2ν} range allowed by the QRPA is excluded by the present measurement at the 90% confidence level. Our analysis reveals that predicted ξ_{31}^{2ν} values are sensitive to the quenching of NMEs and the competing contributions from low- and high-energy states in the intermediate nucleus. Because these aspects are also at play in neutrinoless ßß decay, ξ_{31}^{2ν} provides new insights toward reliable neutrinoless ßß NMEs.

RESUMO

We present an improved search for neutrinoless double-beta (0νßß) decay of ^{136}Xe in the KamLAND-Zen experiment. Owing to purification of the xenon-loaded liquid scintillator, we achieved a significant reduction of the ^{110m}Ag contaminant identified in previous searches. Combining the results from the first and second phase, we obtain a lower limit for the 0νßß decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}>1.07×10^{26} yr at 90% C.L., an almost sixfold improvement over previous limits. Using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations, the corresponding upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass are in the range 61-165 meV. For the most optimistic nuclear matrix elements, this limit reaches the bottom of the quasidegenerate neutrino mass region.

RESUMO

The T2K experiment has observed electron neutrino appearance in a muon neutrino beam produced 295 km from the Super-Kamiokande detector with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. A total of 28 electron neutrino events were detected with an energy distribution consistent with an appearance signal, corresponding to a significance of 7.3σ when compared to 4.92±0.55 expected background events. In the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata mixing model, the electron neutrino appearance signal depends on several parameters including three mixing angles θ12, θ23, θ13, a mass difference Δm(32)(2) and a CP violating phase δ(CP). In this neutrino oscillation scenario, assuming |Δm(32)(2)|=2.4×10(-3) eV(2), sin(2)θ(23)=0.5, and Δm322>0 (Δm(32)(2)<0), a best-fit value of sin(2)2θ(13)=0.140(-0.032)(+0.038) (0.170(-0.037)(+0.045)) is obtained at δ(CP)=0. When combining the result with the current best knowledge of oscillation parameters including the world average value of θ(13) from reactor experiments, some values of δ(CP) are disfavored at the 90% C.L.

RESUMO

New data from the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment produce the most precise measurement of the neutrino mixing parameter θ23. Using an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV and a data set corresponding to 6.57×10(20) protons on target, T2K has fit the energy-dependent νµ oscillation probability to determine oscillation parameters. The 68% confidence limit on sin(2)(θ23) is 0.514(-0.056)(+0.055) (0.511±0.055), assuming normal (inverted) mass hierarchy. The best-fit mass-squared splitting for normal hierarchy is Δm32(2)=(2.51±0.10)×10(-3) eV(2)/c(4) (inverted hierarchy: Δm13(2)=(2.48±0.10)×10(-3) eV(2)/c(4)). Adding a model of multinucleon interactions that affect neutrino energy reconstruction is found to produce only small biases in neutrino oscillation parameter extraction at current levels of statistical uncertainty.

RESUMO

The T2K off-axis near detector ND280 is used to make the first differential cross-section measurements of electron neutrino charged current interactions at energies ∼1 GeV as a function of electron momentum, electron scattering angle, and four-momentum transfer of the interaction. The total flux-averaged ν(e) charged current cross section on carbon is measured to be ⟨σ⟩(ϕ)=1.11±0.10(stat)±0.18(syst)×10⁻³8 cm²/nucleon. The differential and total cross-section measurements agree with the predictions of two leading neutrino interaction generators, NEUT and GENIE. The NEUT prediction is 1.23×10⁻³8 cm²/nucleon and the GENIE prediction is 1.08×10⁻³8 cm²/nucleon. The total ν(e) charged current cross-section result is also in agreement with data from the Gargamelle experiment.

RESUMO

We present results from the first phase of the KamLAND-Zen double-beta decay experiment, corresponding to an exposure of 89.5 kg yr of (136)Xe. We obtain a lower limit for the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of T(1/2)(0ν)>1.9×10(25) yr at 90% C.L. The combined results from KamLAND-Zen and EXO-200 give T(1/2)(0ν)>3.4×10(25) yr at 90% C.L., which corresponds to a Majorana neutrino mass limit of <(120-250) meV based on a representative range of available matrix element calculations. Using those calculations, this result excludes the Majorana neutrino mass range expected from the neutrinoless double-beta decay detection claim in (76)Ge, reported by a part of the Heidelberg-Moscow Collaboration, at more than 97.5% C.L.

RESUMO

The T2K Collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to 3.01×10(20) protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, 205±17 (syst) events are expected to be detected while only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum, assuming three neutrino flavors and normal mass hierarchy yields a best-fit mixing angle sin2(θ23)=0.514±0.082 and mass splitting |Δm(32)(2)|=2.44(-0.15)(+0.17)×10(-3) eV2/c4. Our result corresponds to the maximal oscillation disappearance probability.

RESUMO

The T2K experiment observes indications of ν(µ) → ν(e) appearance in data accumulated with 1.43×10(20) protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with |Δm(23)(2)| = 2.4×10(-3) eV(2), sin(2)2θ(23) = 1 and sin(2)2θ(13) = 0, the expected number of such events is 1.5±0.3(syst). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7×10(-3), equivalent to 2.5σ significance. At 90% C.L., the data are consistent with 0.03(0.04) < sin(2)2θ(13) < 0.28(0.34) for δ(CP) = 0 and a normal (inverted) hierarchy.

RESUMO

The detection of electron antineutrinos produced by natural radioactivity in the Earth could yield important geophysical information. The Kamioka liquid scintillator antineutrino detector (KamLAND) has the sensitivity to detect electron antineutrinos produced by the decay of 238U and 232Th within the Earth. Earth composition models suggest that the radiogenic power from these isotope decays is 16 TW, approximately half of the total measured heat dissipation rate from the Earth. Here we present results from a search for geoneutrinos with KamLAND. Assuming a Th/U mass concentration ratio of 3.9, the 90 per cent confidence interval for the total number of geoneutrinos detected is 4.5 to 54.2. This result is consistent with the central value of 19 predicted by geophysical models. Although our present data have limited statistical power, they nevertheless provide by direct means an upper limit (60 TW) for the radiogenic power of U and Th in the Earth, a quantity that is currently poorly constrained.

RESUMO

Intravenous perfluorocarbon emulsion (IV-PFC) has been shown to provide hemodynamic protection from gas embolism (Venous-VGE or arterial-AGE). The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism of PFC protection from controlled VGE by quantifying the effects of IV-PFC emulsion on pulmonary elimination of nitrogen (N2). All rabbits received an intravenous pretreatment of PFC emulsion (Oxygent, 2.7 g/kg) or saline, then either a continuous room air infusion (0.25 ml/kg for 10 minutes) or a bolus of air (0.8 ml/kg within 10 seconds) through the femoral vein. Expiratory N2 peaked higher with PFC infusion immediately after air injection. The recovery to baseline of end tidal N2 was faster for PFC-treated animals (40 +/- 4.7 vs. 58 +/- 6.5 minutes). In PFC-treated animals, expired CO2, O2, arterial pressure and central venous pressure returned to baseline faster than the saline group. This study demonstrated that PFC increased pulmonary N2 washout. Correspondingly, PFC treatment better preserved the animals' hemodynamics after VGE injury. The use of IV-PFC promises to be a breakthrough non-recompression therapy for gas embolism in the treatment of Decompression Sickness (DCS) and in surgery.

RESUMO

Membranous glomerulopathy, de novo or recurrent, in the allograft kidney is a recognized, albeit uncommon, clinical entity. We examined the records of 936 renal allograft recipients in a seven and one-half year period. De novo membranous glomerulopathy developed in six patients. The mean onset of nephrotic-range proteinuria after transplantation was at 18.1 months (with a range of from 4 to 30 months). De novo membranous glomerulopathy did not adversely affect graft survival. Twenty-five patients were transplanted for end-stage renal disease caused by membranous glomerulopathy. The rate of recurrence of membranous glomerulopathy in patients who did not lose their allograft to rejection in the immediate posttransplant period was 7%. Additional prednisone therapy to the standard immunosuppressive protocol did not appear to be beneficial. One patient, who developed a recurrence of the original lesion, received an HLA-identical kidney. Onset of nephrotic-range proteinuria occurred four weeks post-transplant. Recurrent membranous glomerulopathy has been reported in five other patients. In the two recipients of living related allografts nephrotic-range proteinuria developed within two weeks of the transplant. Patients with end-stage renal disease caused by membranous glomerulopathy who receive a living related allograft, especially one that is HLA-identical, may be at a higher risk for morbidity and for early recurrence. We recommend caution in the use of a living related transplant for patients with end-stage renal disease caused by membranous glomerulopathy.

RESUMO

The impending no-reflow (NRF) state was studied in the rat hindlimb to identify possible biochemical mediators producing the no-reflow phenomenon. After 5 hours of ischemia, the venous effluents draining the ischemic limb and the contralateral nonischemic limb were collected for three 30-minute time periods. Thromboxane B2 (TxB2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and 6-ketoprostaglandin F1 alpha, the stable metabolite of prostacyclin (PGI2), were measured by radioimmunoassay. Venous outflow rate, distal skin perfusion assessed by dermofluorometry, and histology of muscle and skin were examined in control limbs, ischemic limbs, and limbs with impending no reflow. The no-reflow state was characterized by a significantly decreased venous outflow (less than 0.01 ml per minute), decreased skin perfusion (index of fluorescence of 15 percent in no-reflow limbs versus 70 percent in reflow limbs), and absence of thrombosis of the vasculature. The no-reflow state also was associated with 2.4 times more thromboxane B2 and 1.5 times more 6-ketoprostaglandin F1 alpha than that observed in ischemic limbs with reflow. The biosynthesis of vasodilating prostaglandin E2 in the no-reflow state, however, was only 40 percent of the prostaglandin E2 measured in limbs with reflow. We propose that the impending no-reflow state may reflect a state of global microcirculatory "agonal" vasoconstriction, most probably due to an overabundant release of the vasoconstrictor thromboxane relative to the vasodilating prostaglandin E2 and prostacyclin. The likelihood of specific biochemical mechanisms producing the no-reflow state suggests that pharmacologic agents may be able to reverse the impending no-reflow state to improve tissue survival.

RESUMO

The Kamioka Liquid scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector is used in a search for single neutron or two-neutron intranuclear disappearance that would produce holes in the -shell energy level of (12)C nuclei. Such holes could be created as a result of nucleon decay into invisible modes (inv), e.g., n--> 3v or nn--> 2v. The deexcitation of the corresponding daughter nucleus results in a sequence of space and time-correlated events observable in the liquid scintillator detector. We report on new limits for one- and two-neutron disappearance: tau(n--> inv) > 5.8 x 10(29) years and tau (nn--> inv) > 1.4 x 10(30) years at 90% C.L. These results represent an improvement of factors of approximately 3 and >10(4) and over previous experiments.

RESUMO

We present results of a study of neutrino oscillation based on a 766 ton/year exposure of KamLAND to reactor antineutrinos. We observe 258 nu (e) candidate events with energies above 3.4 MeV compared to 365.2+/-23.7 events expected in the absence of neutrino oscillation. Accounting for 17.8+/-7.3 expected background events, the statistical significance for reactor nu (e) disappearance is 99.998%. The observed energy spectrum disagrees with the expected spectral shape in the absence of neutrino oscillation at 99.6% significance and prefers the distortion expected from nu (e) oscillation effects. A two-neutrino oscillation analysis of the KamLAND data gives Deltam(2)=7.9(+0.6)(-0.5)x10(-5) eV(2). A global analysis of data from KamLAND and solar-neutrino experiments yields Deltam(2)=7.9(+0.6)(-0.5)x10(-5) eV(2) and tan((2)theta=0.40(+0.10)(-0.07), the most precise determination to date.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Concerns regarding the safety of silicone gel breast implants have motivated many patients with complications from their silicone breast implants to search for alternatives for breast reconstruction. Although autogenous tissue has been used for primary breast reconstruction after mastectomy, few studies have described its use in the patient in whom silicone-implant breast reconstruction has failed. METHODS: Between 1988 and 1993, 33 patients who had previous unsuccessful breast reconstruction with silicone breast implants underwent implant removal and autogenous tissue reconstruction. Preoperative evaluation included implant-related problems, such as capsular contracture, pain, and loss of implant shell integrity. Systemic symptoms that developed after implantation also were evaluated. Three types of myocutaneous flaps were used for breast reconstruction: the latissimus dorsi pedicle flap, the transverse rectus abdominis free flap, and the superior gluteus maximus free flap. Follow-up evaluation was done for both implant-related problems and issues related to patient satisfaction after autogenous tissue reconstruction. RESULTS: The overall flap survival rate for 33 women who underwent flap reconstruction was 94%. All flap losses occurred in the first nine flaps. Ninety-two percent of patients felt their autogenous tissue reconstructions were aesthetically superior to their previous implant reconstruction. All but one patient felt complete resolution in their chest wall discomfort and pain. Eighty-one percent of patients with systemic symptoms also felt improvement in their systemic symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Autogenous tissue reconstruction from multiple areas of the body is an effective and aesthetically superior alternative for the patient who no longer desires the silicone implant option.

RESUMO

The mechanism that sustains chloride-depletion metabolic alkalosis is presumed to be a stimulation of renal acidification, so that the elevated filtered bicarbonate load that attends hyperbicarbonatemia is completely reabsorbed. However, such enhancement of renal bicarbonate reabsorption is not necessary to maintain hyperbicarbonatemia if the filtered bicarbonate load is not increased owing to a concomitant reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). To assess the relative contributions of enhanced renal bicarbonate reabsorption and reduced GFR in the maintenance of chloride-depletion alkalosis in humans, selective hydrochloric acid depletion was induced in five normal subjects. Plasma bicarbonate concentration increased by 27% (25.3 +/- 0.1 to 32.1 +/- 0.3 mEq/liter, P less than 0.005), whereas the rate of renal bicarbonate reabsorption increased by only 17% (2.7 +/- 0.1 to 3.2 +/- 0.2 mEq/min, P less than 0.05) owing to a 10% reduction in GFR (93.2 +/- 4.4 to 84.3 +/- 4.1 ml/min, P less than 0.01). Thus, in chloride-depletion metabolic alkalosis in humans, the increase in plasma bicarbonate concentration is not attended by a commensurate increase in filtered bicarbonate and rate of renal bicarbonate reabsorption. Both a reduction in GFR and an enhancement of renal bicarbonate reabsorption contribute to maintenance of the alkalotic state.

RESUMO

An instrument to measure the stigma perceived by people with HIV was developed based on the literature on stigma and psychosocial aspects of having HIV. Items surviving two rounds of content review were assembled in a booklet and distributed through HIV-related organizations across the United States. Psychometric analysis was performed on 318 questionnaires returned by people with HIV (19% women, 21% African American, 8% Hispanic). Four factors emerged from exploratory factor analysis: personalized stigma, disclosure concerns, negative self-image, and concern with public attitudes toward people with HIV. Extraction of one higher-order factor provided evidence of a single overall construct. Construct validity also was supported by relationships with related constructs: self-esteem, depression, social support, and social conflict. Coefficient alphas between .90 and .93 for the subscales and .96 for the 40-item instrument provided evidence of internal consistency reliability. The HIV Stigma Scale was reliable and valid with a large, diverse sample of people with HIV.

RESUMO

We present a search for direct CP violation in B+/--->J/psiK+/- and B+/--->psi(2S)K+/- decays. In a sample of 9.7x10(6) B&Bmacr; meson pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we have fully reconstructed 534 B+/--->J/psiK+/- and 120 B+/--->psi(2S)K+/- decays with very low background. We have measured the CP-violating charge asymmetry to be [+1.8+/-4.3(stat)+/-0.4(syst)]% for B+/--->J/psiK+/- and [+2.0+/-9. 1(stat)+/-1.0(syst)]% for B+/--->psi(2S)K+/-.
