RESUMO

Plastic pollution and food waste are two global issues with much in common. Plastic containers were introduced as a practical and easy remedy to improve food preservation and reduce the risk of creating waste, but ironically, to address one problem, another has been made worse. The spread of single-use containers has dramatically increased the amount of plastic that has to be discarded, and the most urgent task is now to find a solution to what has become part of the problem. An innovative way around it consists of promoting the valorization of food residues by turning them into novel materials for packaging. Although the results are promising, the aim of completely replacing plastics with biodegradable materials still seems far from being achieved. This review illustrates the main strategies adopted thus far to produce new bioplastic materials and composites from waste resources and focuses on the pros and cons of the food recovery process to look for the aspects that represent an obstacle to the development of the circular food economy on an industrial scale.

RESUMO

The present paper describes the preparation and characterization of novel microbeads from alginate filled with nanoclay such as halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). HNTs were used as support for the growth of layered double hydroxide (LDH) crystals producing a flower-like structure (HNT@LDH). Such nanofiller was loaded with grapefruit seed oil (GO), an active compound with antimicrobial activity, up to 50% wt. For comparison, the beads were also loaded with HNT and LDH separately, and filled with the same amount of GO. The characterization of the filler was performed using XRD and ATR spectroscopy. The beads were analyzed through XRD, TGA, ATR and SEM. The functional properties of the beads, as nanocarriers of the active compound, were investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy. The release kinetics were recorded and modelled as a function of the structural characteristics of the nanofiller.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of layered solids applied in many application fields. The study of synthetic methods able to control the interlayer composition and morphology of LDH is an open issue. The urea method, which exploits the thermal decomposition of urea, is known for yielding highly crystalline LDH in the carbonate form. This form is highly stable and, to replace carbonate ions with more easily exchangeable anions, a second step is required. In this work, we modified the urea method to obtain MgAl and ZnAl LDH in the chloride or nitrate form through a one-step synthesis. The effects of the urea/(Al + M(II)) molar ratio (R), reaction time and metal salt concentrations were deeply investigated. We found that LDH in chloride and nitrate forms can be prepared from solutions of metal salts not exceeding 1 M by adjusting R and maintaining the reaction time at 48 hours. The morphology of these products was found to depend on the R value and on the metal salts used in the synthesis. A high R value and nitrate salts favoured the formation of sand-rose crystals, while chloride salts induced the formation of plate-like crystals. The crystal growth mechanism and the parameters influencing the morphology are discussed with reference to ZnAl LDH by monitoring the synthesis over time.

Enhancing the antibacterial activity of old antibiotics by a multitarget approach, such as combining antibiotics with metal nanoparticles, is a valuable strategy to overcome antibacterial resistance. In this work, the synergistic antimicrobial effect of silver nanoparticles and antibiotics, immobilized on a solid support, was investigated. Nanometric layered double hydroxides (LDH) based on Zn(II) and Al(III) were prepared by the double microemulsion technique. The dual function of LDH as an anionic exchanger and support for metal nanoparticles was exploited to immobilize both silver and antibiotics. Cefazolin (CFZ), a ß-lactam, and nalidixic acid (NAL), a quinolone, were selected and intercalated into LDH obtaining ZnAl-CFZ and ZnAl-NAL samples. These samples were used for the growth of silver nanoparticles with dimension ranging from 2.5 to 8 nm. Silver and antibiotics release profiles, from LDH loaded with antibiotics and Ag/antibiotics, were evaluated in two different media: water and phosphate buffer. Interestingly, the release profiles are affected by both the acceptor media and the presence of silver. The synergistic antibacterial activity of LDH containing both silver and antibiotics were investigated on gram-positives (Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae) and gram-negatives (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and compared with the plain antimicrobials and LDH containing only antibiotics or silver.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have received great attention for years in numerous fields. Controlled and flexible layer composition, as well as the vast assortment of possible anionic guests, and easy adaptability for multipurpose applications, have been some of the many reasons behind their extraordinary success. However, versatility does not only involve the composition or the dimensions of the crystals but also their morphology. Aside from conventional hexagonal, flat structures, three-dimensional assemblies have been reported with architectures closely resembling those of flowers. The possibility of interconnecting the LDH nanosheets in rosette-like geometries has arisen the interest in finding new ways to control, modulate, and guide the particle growth obtaining hierarchical structures to be adapted to specific targets. This review is focused on describing the different strategies implemented to build flower-like assemblies, and on investigating their applications, looking for specific advantages of the use of a three-dimensional architecture over a bi-dimensional one.

New organic derivatives of α-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) were prepared by reaction of a gel of nanocrystalline ZrP with 1,2,7,8-diepoxyoctane (diepoxide), leading to the formation of P-O-C bonds. A series of compounds having composition Zr(O3POH)2-2x(O3POCH2CH(OH)(CH2)4CH(OH)CH2OPO3)x (hereafter indicated as ZrP(dep)x) were obtained by varying the diepoxide/Zr molar ratio in the range 0.25-1. The samples were characterized by elemental, thermal and X-ray powder diffraction analysis. The reaction turned out to be nearly quantitative, the x values of ZrP(dep)x being in the range 0.16 to 1.0. The interlayer distance slightly increased with increasing x, going from 12.7 to 13.2 Å. Interestingly, the materials easily intercalated alkanols at room temperature, both from liquid and vapor phases; it is noteworthy that ZrP(dep)0.30 was able to reversibly take up 42 wt% ethanol from the vapor phase, in agreement with the presence of available free space both in the interlayer and in the intercrystal region. Geometrical structural models in which the α-ZrP layers are connected by the dep chains were proposed to support the obtained results.
