RESUMO

A precision measurement of the ß^{+} decay of ^{8}B was performed using the Beta-decay Paul Trap to determine the ß-ν angular correlation coefficient a_{ßν}. The experimental results were combined with new ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell-model calculations to yield the second-most precise measurement from Gamow-Teller decays, a_{ßν}=-0.3345±0.0019_{stat}±0.0021_{syst}. This value agrees with the standard model value of -1/3 and improves uncertainties in ^{8}B by nearly a factor of 2. By combining results from ^{8}B and ^{8}Li, a tight limit on tensor current coupling to right-handed neutrinos was obtained. A recent global evaluation of all other precision ß decay studies suggested a nonzero value for right-handed neutrino coupling in contradiction with the standard model at just above 3σ. The present results are of comparable sensitivity and do not support this finding.

RESUMO

We present the first measurement of the α-ß-ν angular correlation in the Gamow-Teller ß^{+} decay of ^{8}B. This was accomplished using the Beta-decay Paul Trap, expanding on our previous work on the ß^{-} decay of ^{8}Li. The ^{8}B result is consistent with the V-A electroweak interaction of the standard model and, on its own, provides a limit on the exotic right-handed tensor current relative to the axial-vector current of |C_{T}/C_{A}|^{2}<0.013 at the 95.5% confidence level. This represents the first high-precision angular correlation measurements in mirror decays and was made possible through the use of an ion trap. By combining this ^{8}B result with our previous ^{8}Li results, we demonstrate a new pathway for increased precision in searches for exotic currents.

RESUMO

Nuclear isomer effects are pivotal in understanding nuclear astrophysics, particularly in the rapid neutron-capture process where the population of metastable isomers can alter the radioactive decay paths of nuclei produced during astrophysical events. The ß-decaying isomer ^{128m}Sb was identified as potentially impactful since the ß-decay pathway along the A=128 isobar funnels into this state bypassing the ground state. We report the first direct mass measurements of the ^{128}Sb isomer and ground state using the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer at Argonne National Laboratory. We find mass excesses of -84564.8(25) keV and -84608.8(21) keV, respectively, resulting in an excitation energy for the isomer of 43.9(33) keV. These results provide the first key nuclear data input for understanding the role of ^{128m}Sb in nucleosynthesis, and we show that it will influence the flow of the rapid neutron-capture process.

RESUMO

The electroweak interaction in the standard model is described by a pure vector-axial-vector structure, though any Lorentz-invariant component could contribute. In this Letter, we present the most precise measurement of tensor currents in the low-energy regime by examining the ß-ν[over ¯] correlation of trapped ^{8}Li ions with the Beta-decay Paul Trap. We find a_{ßν}=-0.3325±0.0013_{stat}±0.0019_{syst} at 1σ for the case of coupling to right-handed neutrinos (C_{T}=-C_{T}^{'}), which is consistent with the standard model prediction.

RESUMO

The rare-earth peak in the r-process abundance pattern depends sensitively on both the astrophysical conditions and subtle changes in nuclear structure in the region. This work takes an important step towards elucidating the nuclear structure and reducing the uncertainties in r-process calculations via precise atomic mass measurements at the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap. ^{158}Nd, ^{160}Pm, ^{162}Sm, and ^{164-166}Gd have been measured for the first time, and the precisions for ^{156}Nd, ^{158}Pm, ^{162,163}Eu, ^{163}Gd, and ^{164}Tb have been improved considerably. Nuclear structure has been probed via two-neutron separation energies S_{2n} and neutron pairing energy metrics D_{n}. The data do not support the existence of a subshell closure at N=100. Neutron pairing has been found to be weaker than predicted by theoretical mass models. The impact on the calculated r-process abundances has been studied. Substantial changes resulting in a smoother abundance distribution and a better agreement with the solar r-process abundances are observed.

RESUMO

We report the mass measurement of ^{56}Cu, using the LEBIT 9.4 T Penning trap mass spectrometer at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. The mass of ^{56}Cu is critical for constraining the reaction rates of the ^{55}Ni(p,γ) ^{56}Cu(p,γ) ^{57}Zn(ß^{+}) ^{57}Cu bypass around the ^{56}Ni waiting point. Previous recommended mass excess values have disagreed by several hundred keV. Our new value, ME=-38626.7(7.1) keV, is a factor of 30 more precise than the extrapolated value suggested in the 2012 atomic mass evaluation [Chin. Phys. C 36, 1603 (2012)CPCHCQ1674-113710.1088/1674-1137/36/12/003], and more than a factor of 12 more precise than values calculated using local mass extrapolations, while agreeing with the newest 2016 atomic mass evaluation value [Chin. Phys. C 41, 030003 (2017)CPCHCQ1674-113710.1088/1674-1137/41/3/030003]. The new experimental average, using our new mass and the value from AME2016, is used to calculate the astrophysical ^{55}Ni(p,γ) and ^{56}Cu(p,γ) forward and reverse rates and perform reaction network calculations of the rp process. These show that the rp-process flow redirects around the ^{56}Ni waiting point through the ^{55}Ni(p,γ) route, allowing it to proceed to higher masses more quickly and resulting in a reduction in ashes around this waiting point and an enhancement to higher-mass ashes.

RESUMO

We report the determination of the Q(EC) value of the mirror transition of (11)C by measuring the atomic masses of (11)C and (11)B using Penning trap mass spectrometry. More than an order of magnitude improvement in precision is achieved as compared to the 2012 Atomic Mass Evaluation (Ame2012) [Chin. Phys. C 36, 1603 (2012)]. This leads to a factor of 3 improvement in the calculated Ft value. Using the new value, Q(EC)=1981.690(61) keV, the uncertainty on Ft is no longer dominated by the uncertainty on the Q(EC) value. Based on this measurement, we provide an updated estimate of the Gamow-Teller to Fermi mixing ratio and standard model values of the correlation coefficients.

RESUMO

We report the first direct measurement of the (14)O superallowed Fermi ß-decay QEC value, the last of the so-called "traditional nine" superallowed Fermi ß decays to be measured with Penning trap mass spectrometry. (14)O, along with the other low-Z superallowed ß emitter, (10)C, is crucial for setting limits on the existence of possible scalar currents. The new ground state QEC value, 5144.364(25) keV, when combined with the energy of the 0(+) daughter state, Ex(0(+))=2312.798(11) keV [F. Ajzenberg-Selove, Nucl. Phys. A523, 1 (1991)], provides a new determination of the superallowed ß-decay QEC value, QEC(sa)=2831.566(28) keV, with an order of magnitude improvement in precision, and a similar improvement to the calculated statistical rate function f. This is used to calculate an improved Ft value of 3073.8(2.8) s.

RESUMO

Using the Penning trap mass spectrometer TITAN, we performed the first direct mass measurements of (20,21)Mg, isotopes that are the most proton-rich members of the A = 20 and A = 21 isospin multiplets. These measurements were possible through the use of a unique ion-guide laser ion source, a development that suppressed isobaric contamination by 6 orders of magnitude. Compared to the latest atomic mass evaluation, we find that the mass of (21)Mg is in good agreement but that the mass of (20)Mg deviates by 3 σ. These measurements reduce the uncertainties in the masses of (20,21)Mg by 15 and 22 times, respectively, resulting in a significant departure from the expected behavior of the isobaric multiplet mass equation in both the A = 20 and A = 21 multiplets. This presents a challenge to shell model calculations using either the isospin nonconserving universal sd USDA and USDB Hamiltonians or isospin nonconserving interactions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon forces.

RESUMO

Recent high-precision mass measurements of 9Li and 9Be, performed with the TITAN Penning trap at the TRIUMF ISAC facility, are analyzed in light of state-of-the-art shell model calculations. We find an explanation for the anomalous isobaric mass multiplet equation behavior for the two A=9 quartets. The presence of a cubic d=6.3(17) keV term for the J(π)=3/2(-) quartet and the vanishing cubic term for the excited J(π)=1/2(-) multiplet depend upon the presence of a nearby T=1/2 state in 9B and 9Be that induces isospin mixing. This is contrary to previous hypotheses involving purely Coulomb and charge-dependent effects. T=1/2 states have been observed near the calculated energy, above the T=3/2 state. However, an experimental confirmation of their J(π) is needed.

RESUMO

The first direct mass measurement of {6}He has been performed with the TITAN Penning trap mass spectrometer at the ISAC facility. In addition, the mass of {8}He was determined with improved precision over our previous measurement. The obtained masses are m({6}He)=6.018 885 883(57) u and m({8}He)=8.033 934 44(11) u. The {6}He value shows a deviation from the literature of 4σ. With these new mass values and the previously measured atomic isotope shifts we obtain charge radii of 2.060(8) and 1.959(16) fm for {6}He and {8}He, respectively. We present a detailed comparison to nuclear theory for {6}He, including new hyperspherical harmonics results. A correlation plot of the point-proton radius with the two-neutron separation energy demonstrates clearly the importance of three-nucleon forces.

RESUMO

Penning trap mass measurements of short-lived nuclides have been performed for the first time with highly charged ions, using the TITAN facility at TRIUMF. Compared to singly charged ions, this provides an improvement in experimental precision that scales with the charge state q. Neutron-deficient Rb isotopes have been charge bred in an electron beam ion trap to q=8-12+ prior to injection into the Penning trap. In combination with the Ramsey excitation scheme, this unique setup creating low energy, highly charged ions at a radioactive beam facility opens the door to unrivaled precision with gains of 1-2 orders of magnitude. The method is particularly suited for short-lived nuclides such as the superallowed ß emitter 74Rb (T(1/2)=65 ms). The determination of its atomic mass and an improved Q(EC) value are presented.

RESUMO

We present written naming norms from 153 young adult Dutch speakers for 1397 photographs (the BOSS set; see Brodeur, Dionne-Dostie, Montreuil, & Lepage, 2010; Brodeur, Guérard, & Bouras, 2014). From the norming study, we report the preferred (modal) name, alternative names, name agreement, and average object agreement. In addition, the data base includes Zipf frequency, word prevalence and Age of Acquisition for the modal picture names collected. Furthermore, we describe a subset of 359 photographs with very good name agreement and a subset of 35 photos with two common names. These sets may be particularly valuable for designing experiments. Though the participants typed the object names, comparisons with other datasets indicate that the collected norms are valuable for spoken naming studies as well.

RESUMO

This field trial evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with 16 mg/kg (based on total dry matter intake) of monensin sodium on bulk tank milk fat percentage (MFP) of commercial dairy herds. Interactions between monensin and nutritional factors on MFP were studied. The trial was conducted in 47 Holstein dairy herds in Québec, Canada, between November 2005 and May 2006. The herd was the unit of interest. Enrolled herds were followed for a 7-mo period. Monensin treatment was randomly allocated in a crossover design where monensin was supplemented to the lactating dairy cow diet for a consecutive 12-wk period. Twenty-four herds were allocated to monensin treatment for the first period of trial, and 23 herds were allocated for the second period. Diet composition and ration physically effective particle level were collected every 8 wk. Milk fat percentage data were retrieved from weekly bulk tank measures. Data were analyzed in linear mixed models using repeated measures within herd where MFP was considered the outcome variable. In addition to the main effect of monensin treatment, the following covariates were forced a priori into all statistical models: treatment period, weekly herd mean parity, and weekly herd mean days in milk. The majority of herds were fed a total mixed ration (n = 29) and were housed in tie-stalls (n = 42). Monensin significantly decreased bulk tank MFP by 0.12 percentage points. The reduction of MFP associated with monensin was larger for herds having a diet high (>39.7%) in nonfiber carbohydrates, having a low level of physically effective particles in ration (>45.0%; >or=8 mm), and not feeding dry hay as first meal in the morning. Significant interactions between monensin and nutritional factors on bulk tank MFP were related to nonfiber carbohydrate and fiber concentrations in the diet.

RESUMO

The mechanisms responsible for the perception of illusory modal figures are usually studied by presenting entire Kanizsa figures at stimulus onset. However, with this mode of presentation, the brain activity generated by the inducers (the 'pacmen') is difficult to differentiate from the activity underlying the perception of the illusory figure. Therefore, in addition to this usual presentation mode, we used an alternative presentation mode. Inducer disks remained permanently on the screen and the illusory figure was induced by just removing the notches from the disks. The results support the heuristic value of this alternative mode of presentation. The P1 deflection of the visual evoked potentials (VEPs) was found to be greater for the illusory modal figure than for its control and for an amodal figure. This modulation is one of the earliest direct evidences for a low-level processing of illusory forms in the human brain. Meanwhile, larger N1s were obtained for the control figures than for the illusory figures in the notch mode of presentation. While this new type of N1 modulation could shed some light on the stage of processing indexed by this deflection, several propositions are put forward to account for the P1 and N1 variations found.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Episodic memory is significantly impaired in people with schizophrenia. The precise cause of this impairment has yet to be determined, as the formation of episodic memories is dependent on other processes, some of which also show impairment in schizophrenia. One such process is closure, that is, the filling-in of missing information. Failure to close adequately incomplete stimuli may cause people with schizophrenia to store inadequate or piecemeal representations in memory. METHODS: Forty people with schizophrenia and 21 healthy comparison subjects participated in the study. The experiment was divided into six blocks, each of which involved both an encoding and a recognition phase. During the encoding phase, 20 figures were presented sequentially and participants had to determine whether each was symmetric or asymmetric. These figures were either complete or fragmented at three different levels. In subsequent recognition phase, 40 abstract figures (20 new and 20 old) were presented. All figures were complete in this phase. RESULTS: Memory performance of both groups was affected similarly by fragmentation, with an additional increase in performance afforded by a slight fragmentation for participants with schizophrenia. CONCLUSION: Slight fragmentation may have induced a perceptual difficulty that was mild enough to increase visual processing without compromising it. Closure was thus not involved in the episodic memory deficit of people with schizophrenia.

RESUMO

A case combining Christmas disease and tricuspid atresia is presented. A severe coagulation defect in a hypoxic, polycythemic patient poses an added grave risk to major surgery. In the presence of marked and worsening symptoms, however, major surgery can be performed in these difficult cases. Close liason with a skilled hematology department is essential. Minimal tissue dissection is advised, and the usefulness of a reversed saphenous vein conduit is described.

RESUMO

TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science (TITAN) constitutes the only high precision mass measurement setup coupled to a rare isotope facility capable of increasing the charge state of short-lived nuclides prior to the actual mass determination in a Penning trap. Recent developments around TITAN's charge breeder, the electron beam ion trap, form the basis for several successful experiments on radioactive isotopes with half-lives as low as 65 ms and in charge states as high as 22+.
