Observation of Varroa destructor behavior in capped worker brood of Africanized honey bees.

The behavioral activity of Varroa destructor was observed using transparent cells. Mite oviposition started at 45.0 ± 25.0 h post capping, followed by the next eggs laid at regular 27.3 ± 2.0 h intervals. On the prepupa, mites were found to feed often and there was no preference for a specific segment as a feeding site. During the pupal stage the mite fed less often and almost always at the same point. Varroa showed a preference for defecation in the posterior part of the cell. A significant association was observed between the position of the feeding point in the pupa and the defecation site on the cell wall. Displacement behavior was observed in 71 % of the infested bee larvae and a major change in the free space available for varroa in the cell occurred when the prepupa molted into a pupa.

Meckel's Enterolith Causing Small Bowel Obstruction: A Useful Solution to a Unique Problem.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. Its course is usually benign but may also result in complications requiring surgical intervention. A diverticulum may also permit the removal of intraluminal objects without bowel resection and anastomosis. A woman in her 50s was found to have a mechanical small bowel obstruction secondary to an intraluminal mass within the terminal ileum. On exploration, an MD was encountered proximal to the mass. A diverticulectomy was performed after maneuvering the enterolith into the diverticulum. Meckel's diverticulum with an associated enterolith is a rare cause of small bowel obstruction. Historic imaging may show long-standing stones in the bowel lumen and provide a diagnostic clue. Diverticulectomy may be performed to reduce the risks of small bowel resection and anastomosis. This technique can be used for other intraluminal objects requiring removal in the presence of an MD.

Programa educativo para la formación humanista de estudiantes de tecnología de la salud / Educational program for the humanistic formation of health technology student

Introducción: El desarrollo de las ciencias médicas en Cuba y el mundo, con actualizados conocimientos científicos y tecnológicos, requiere de la formación de un profesional portador de una vocación humanista que le permita cumplimentar los modos de actuación que la sociedad demanda. Objetivo: Revisar la propuesta de programa educativo para la formación humanista del estudiante de tecnología de la salud. Desarrollo: Se presentó la sistematización teórica de los estudios más actualizados sobre las categorías formación y formación humanista, con la explicación de la propuesta específica de programa educativo para la formación humanista del estudiante de tecnología de la salud, que incluye cursos electivos, acciones de extensión universitaria y una variada propuesta pedagógica para su implementación. Conclusiones: El programa educativo para la formación humanista del estudiante de tecnología de la salud constituye una propuesta pedagógica abierta, dinámica y flexible, que busca ayudarlo a ampliar su horizonte personal para que asuma su propia postura axiológica ante la sociedad. Ello implica un compromiso consciente y gratificante con su cultura, origen, y misión social y humana. También contribuye con la creación de vínculos interdisciplinarios entre contenidos académicos y axiológicos dispersos en disímiles asignaturas, y fomenta los lazos colaborativos entre los educadores(AU)

Introduction: The development of medical sciences in Cuba and in the world, with updated scientific and technological knowledge, requires the training of professionals with a humanistic vocation that allows them to complete the performance modes demanded in society. Objective: To review the proposal of an educational program for the humanistic training of the health technology student. Development: The theoretical systematization of the most updated studies on the categories of training and humanistic training was presented, with the explanation of the specific proposal of an educational program for the humanistic training of the health technology student, which includes elective courses, university outreach actions, and a varied pedagogical proposal for its implementation. Conclusions: The educational program for the humanistic training of the health technology student constitutes an open, dynamic and flexible pedagogical proposal that aims to help the student broaden her or his horizon so that she or he assumes her or his own axiological position within society. This implies a conscious and gratifying commitment to her or his culture, origin, and social and human mission. It also contributes to the creation of interdisciplinary links between the academic and axiological contents distributed in different subjects, and fosters collaborative ties between educators(AU)

Valoracion de la absorcion de D-xilosa en ninos con giardiasis asintomatica / Evaluation of D-xilosa absorption in childrens with asymptomatic giardiasis

Se estudiaron 51 ninos con giardiasis asintomatica todos ellos bien nutridos y sin patologia que pudiese alterar la absorcion intestinal, cuantificando la excrecion urinaria de D-Xilosa, en orina recolectada durante cinco horas, inmediatamente despues de haber administrado una dosis de 0,5 g/kg de peso. La cuantificacion de la xilosuria se realizo de acuerdo a la tecnica descrita por Roe Rice, debidamente estandarizada por los autores. 22 ninos del estudio presentaron malabsorcion de la D-Xilosa (menos de 16// de la cantidad ingerida) y tres de ellos en un grado extremo (menos del 10//). El grupo control conformado por ninos sanos, tuvo en su generalidad valores normales en la excresion urinaria (16 al 33//). Esta prueba tiene una alta especificidad, aunque su sensibilidad apenas llega al 43//.
