RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Multiple benefits for both, mother and baby have been reported from immediate skin-to-skin care (SSC). The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of SSC on operative time and blood loss in primary cesarean births for breech presentation. METHODS: A SSC protocol for cesarean birth was implemented in our institution on February 25, 2019. In this single-center retrospective cohort study, we compared the outcomes of planned primary cesarean births for breech presentation at term before and after its implementation. RESULTS: Data from 110 women who had a cesarean birth for breech presentation at term were analyzed, 55 in each group. Group 1 were women who had immediate SSC and Group 2 were women without immediate SSC. Maternal and surgical characteristics, and neonatal outcomes were similar in both groups. The mean operative time was 3.22 minutes shorter in the immediate SSC group compared with the not immediate SSC group (37.13 ± 12.27 vs 40.35 ± 12.23 minutes; P = 0.171). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, immediate SSC following a low-risk cesarean birth for breech presentation neither prolongs the operative time nor increases blood loss during the procedure. Although we were unable to demonstrate a significant reduction in the operative time with the immediate SSC protocol, a decrease of 3 minutes was noted.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: the association between ovarian endometriosis (OE) and endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (EAOC) is extensively documented, and misfunction of the immune system might be involved. The primary objective of this study was to identify and compare the spatial distribution of tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) in OE and EAOC. Secondary objectives included the analysis of the relationship between immunosuppressive populations and T-cell exhaustion markers in both groups. METHODS: TILs (CD3, CD4, and CD8) and macrophages (CD163) were assessed by immunochemistry. Exhaustion markers (PD-1, TIM3, CD39, and FOXP3) and their relationship with tumour-associated macrophages (CD163) were assessed by immunofluorescence on paraffin-embedded samples from n = 43 OE and n = 54 EAOC patients. RESULTS: we observed a predominantly intraepithelial CD3+ distribution in OE but both an intraepithelial and stromal pattern in EAOC (p < 0.001). TILs were more abundant in OE (p < 0.001), but higher TILs significantly correlated with a longer overall survival and disease-free survival in EAOC (p < 0.05). CD39 and FOXP3 significantly correlated with each other and CD163 (p < 0.05) at the epithelial level in moderate/intense CD4 EAOC, whereas in moderate/intense CD8+, PD-1+ and TIM3+ significantly correlated (p = 0.009). Finally, T-cell exhaustion markers FOXP3-CD39 were decreased and PD-1-TIM3 were significantly increased in EAOC (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: the dysregulation of TILs, TAMs, and T-cell exhaustion might play a role in the malignization of OE to EAOC.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of preoperative 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) scan, combined with clinical variables, in predicting complete cytoreduction in selected patients with advanced ovarian cancer. METHODS: We carried out a multicenter, observational, retrospective study evaluating patients who underwent primary cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer in two Spanish centers between January 2017 and January 2022. Inclusion criteria were histological confirmation of invasive epithelial ovarian carcinoma; preoperative International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage III or IV; upfront cytoreductive surgery; and 18F-FDG PET/CT performed 1 month prior to surgery. A modified 18F-FDG PET/CT peritoneal cancer index score was calculated for all patients. Clinical variables and preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT findings were analyzed and a multivariate model was constructed. A predictive score based on the odds ratio of the variables was calculated to determine patient selection. RESULTS: A total of 45 patients underwent primary cytoreductive surgery. Complete resection was achieved in 36 (80%) patients. On multivariate analysis, two clinical variables (age ≥58 years and American Society of Anesthesiology score ≥3) and two preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT scan findings (presence of extra-abdominal lymph node involvement and modified peritoneal cancer index value of 6 or more) were associated with gross residual disease. For this multivariate model predictive of non-complete cytoreduction, the area under the curve was 0.881. A predictive value of ≥5 was the most predictive cut-off for gross residual disease. Complete resection rate was 91.7% in patients with a score of ≤4 and 33.3% in patients with a score of ≥5 points on the predictive score. CONCLUSIONS: In selected patients, a predictive score value ≥5 may be consider as a cut-off point for triaging patients to diagnostic laparoscopy before the primary surgery or neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

RESUMO

Salivary samples were collected over a 24-hr period from one group of six juvenile (7-12 years) and one group of three adult (24-25 years) African elephant females, Loxodonta africana, and the cortisol concentration was measured in unextracted samples by EIA. Samples were collected during May, June, and November 2012 (n = 147) using cotton swabs at 4-hr intervals from 20:00 to 20:00 of the next day (seven samples per animal in each trial). The animals are kept under standard zoo management: the herd is maintained in their indoor enclosures until 10:00 and then released into the outdoor enclosures until 21:00-21:30 (May/June) and 18:30-19:00 (November). No adult elephant bull was present at the zoo during this time. The results demonstrate a clear diurnal pattern of cortisol secretion with the lowest concentration observed at 20:00 (2.03 ± 0.08 ng/ml saliva) and the peak concentrations at 08:00 (5.26 ± 0.35 ng/ml saliva). Although the cortisol values were higher in the adult cows compared to the juvenile cows in the May-June period, the differences were not significant. However, the values obtained in November from the juvenile group were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than the concentrations measured in this group in June. In conclusion, salivary cortisol in zoo elephants follows a circadian rhythm (sleep-wake cycle) adapted to daily zoo husbandry routines.

RESUMO

Monitoring ovarian cycles through hormonal analysis is important in order to improve breeding management of captive elephants, and non-invasive collection techniques are particularly interesting for this purpose. However, there are some practical difficulties in collecting proper samples, and easier and more practical methods may be an advantage for some institutions and/or some animals. This study describes the development and validation of an enzymeimmunoassay (EIA) for progestins in salivary samples of African elephants, Loxodonta africana. Weekly urinary and salivary samples from five non-pregnant elephant cows aged 7-12 years were obtained for 28 weeks and analyzed using EIA. Both techniques correlated positively (r = 0.799; P < 0.001), and the cycle characteristics obtained were identical. The results clearly show that ovarian cycles can be monitored by measuring progestins from salivary samples in the African elephant. This is a simple and non-invasive method that may be a practical alternative to other sampling methods used in the species.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the repeatability of the Zernike coefficients in healthy eyes when monocular accommodation was stimulated at different vergences demands. METHODS: A total of 36 right eyes from healthy volunteers were prospectively and consecutively recruited for this study. Wavefront aberrometry was conducted to objectively characterize the ocular optical quality during accommodation, from the individual's far point to a 5 D accommodation demand in steps of 0.5 D. The repeatability of Zernike coefficients up to the fourth order was assessed by calculating the within-eye repeatability (Sw), the coefficient of repeatability (CR), the coefficient of variation (CV), and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) as an indicator of measurement reliability. RESULTS: Correlation among repeated measurements showed high reliability (ICC > 0.513) for all parameters measured except some fourth-order Zernike coefficients, C(4, -4) (ICC < 0.766), C(4, -2) (ICC < 0.875), C(4, 2) (ICC < 0.778) and C(4, 4) (ICC < 0.811). Greater repeatability and less variability were obtained for high-order Zernike coefficients (CR < 0.154), although an increase in CR in the coefficients analyzed was observed with increasing accommodative demand. No clear trend was evident in CV; however, it was observed that the low-order Zernike coefficients exhibit lower CV (CV < 1.93) compared to the high-order Zernike coefficients (CV > 0). CONCLUSIONS: The reliability of Zernike coefficients up to the fourth order in healthy young individuals demonstrated a strong consistency in measuring terms up to the fourth order, with more variability observed for high-order terms. The Zernike coefficients up to the third order exhibited the highest level of repeatability.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Accommodation mainly affects the lens, a structure of the eyeball that degrades with age. The aim of this work was to study the morphological changes of different ocular structures during accommodation, both in the anterior pole and the posterior pole, which may also be involved in the accommodation process. METHODS: The study will be carried out by stimulating accommodation through lenses of -1.00, -3.00 and -5.00 D starting from the spherical equivalent (M) of each participant in different age groups, from 18 to 66 years. To obtain the M value, aberrometry was achieved, and retinal optical coherence tomography and anterior pole tomography were performed to evaluate the possible structural modifications (central and peripheral), while accommodation was progressively stimulated. RESULTS: It showed that as the accommodative demand increased, morphological changes were produced in retinal thickness, both in the central and peripheral retina, in all age groups. A thinning of the retina was observed in the central 3 mm, while significant progressive thickening was observed closer to the periphery (up to 6 mm from the fovea) as the required accommodative power increased. A decrease in the anterior chamber depth (ACD) and anterior chamber volume (ACV) was observed with increasing lens power. CONCLUSION: Structural changes were observed in the central and peripheral retina, as well as in the ACD and ACV, while progressively greater accommodation was stimulated, showing that these structures were modified in the accommodation process even in advanced presbyopes.

RESUMO

Background and Aims: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and microstructural deterioration of bone tissues, resulting in bone fragility and increased fracture risk. It is the most common bone-related disease in the population. However, the proportion of patients who start treatment but discontinue it during the first year is very high (around 50%). Endeavors are made to promote patient participation in treatment by implementing patient decision aids (PDA), whose function is to help the patient make disease-related decisions. We aim to summarize the characteristics of the currently available PDA for osteoporosis, as well as deciding factors. Methods: Comprehensive review of the literature. Results: Currently, eleven PDAs can be found for osteoporosis. These PDA have different characteristics or options such as information about treatments tailored to patient needs, graphic information of the results (to facilitate understanding), personal histories (learning), tests to check the knowledge acquired, provision of evidence, clinical practice guidelines or a final summary to share with their doctor. Only five of these PDAs can be considered complete since they provide relevant disease information and therapeutic options to the patient, promote patient's reflection and foment patient-physician discussion. Conclusions: This study provides an update on the current state of decision making on osteoporosis and available PDA, which can help engage the patient through shared decision-making by considering, among other things, patient preferences. Physicians should consider PDA, as it may promote adherence and effectiveness of treatment.

RESUMO

Adequate surgical management of malignant endometriosis remains a clinical challenge in gynecology. Age, sonography variables, and tumor biomarkers have been reported as candidates in the clinical decision. This study aims were to analyze the factors of women's age, body mass index, ultrasound features, and tumor biomarkers to predict endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer in a large series of endometriomas and to study the surgical treatment performed in this cohort. In this retrospective study, we reviewed the medical records of patients with ultrasound diagnosis of ovarian cyst classified as endometrioma (benign as well as with risk of malignancy), surgically treated in the endometriosis unit of Hospital Universitario La Paz (Madrid, Spain) between January 2019 and July 2021. According to the final histology examination, the women were clustered as non-endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (OE, benign endometriomas, n = 59) and endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (EAOC) (n = 17). Demographic, clinical, and surgical data were collected from these women. International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) criteria were assessed for the ultrasound examination. The age of the women in the EAOC group was 50.0 [43.0; 63.0] years, which was significantly higher than OE (39.0 [34.0; 46.0] years; p-value < 0.001). In addition, the body mass index for the OE group (24.9 ± 5.3 kg/m2) was significantly higher than for the EAOC group (23.3 ± 4.6 kg/m2; p-value < 0.001). However, the tumor biomarker levels (CA 125, CA 19.9 and He4) were not significantly different among the groups. We performed 51.4% cystectomies and 48.6% adnexectomies, with an association between the adnexectomy and EAOC group (p-value < 0.001). In addition, a significant association was found between ultrasound features suspicious for malignancy and the EAOC group. Conclusively, women's age and ultrasound features, such as papillary projections, septa, and positive echo-Doppler, were the main factors to consider when evaluating the malignancy risk associated with endometriosis.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The covid-19 pandemic has meant a change in working protocols, as well as in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Obstetricians have had to adapt quickly to these changes without knowing how they affected their clinical practice. The aim of the present study was to evaluate how COVID-19 pandemic and PPE can affect operative time, operating room time, transfer into the operating room to delivery time and skin incision to delivery time in cesarean section. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective cohort study. Women with confirmed or suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection having a cesarean section after March 7th, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic were included in the study. For each woman with confirmed or suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection, a woman who had a cesarean section for the same indication during the COVID-19 pandemic and with similar clinical history but not affected by SARS-CoV-2 was included. RESULTS: 42 cesarean sections were studied. The operating room time was longer in the COVID-19 confirmed or suspected women: 90 (73.0 to 110.0) versus 61 (48.0 to 70.5) minutes; p < .001. The transfer into the operating room to delivery time was longer, but not statistically significant, in urgent cesarean sections in COVID-19 confirmed or suspected women: 25.5 (17.5 to 31.75) versus 18.0 (10.0 to 26.25) minutes; p = .113. CONCLUSIONS: There were no significant differences in the operative time, transfer into the operating room to delivery time and skin incision to delivery time when wearing PPE in cesarean section. The COVID-19 pandemic and the use of PPE resulted in a significant increase in operating room time.

RESUMO

Our aim was to study the advantages, complications and obstetrical outcomes of laparoscopic myomectomy (LM) compared with abdominal myomectomy (AM). We conducted a retrospective cohort study at La Paz University Hospital that included LMs and AMs performed between 2012 and 2018, analyzing 254 myomectomies (142 AMs [55.7%] and 112 LMs [43.9%]). The mean number of fibroids was 1.8 ± 1.5 and 3 ± 2.9 for the LM and AM groups, respectively (p < 0.006). The mean size of the largest myoma was 7.6 cm ± 2.7 cm and 10.2 cm ± 5.4 cm for the LM and AM groups, respectively (p < 0.001). LMs were associated with longer surgical times (p < 0.001) and shorter hospitalizations (p = 0.001). There were no significant differences in the intraoperative and postoperative complication rates (p = 0.075 and p = 0.285 for LM and AM, respectively). The subsequent pregnancy rate was higher for the LM group (30.8% vs. 16.8%, p = 0.009), with a vaginal delivery rate of 69% and no cases of uterine rupture.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To study the retinal and choroidal layers in type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) without diabetic retinopathy (DR), using speckle contrast of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images as a tissue biomarker in comparison with healthy subjects. METHODS: OCT Spectralis images of 148 eyes, 84 from DM1 patients without DR signs, and 64 belonging to the control group, were collected. The speckle contrast and thickness of the inner retinal layer (IRL), the outer retinal layer (ORL), and the choroidal layer in the nasal parafoveal area (N3), were prospectively analyzed. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference (p = 0.001) in the IRL thickness between groups was observed, being thicker in the DM1 group. There were no differences in the ORL and choroidal thicknesses between groups. A statistically significant difference (p = 0.02) in the IRL speckle contrast was obtained, being lower in the DM1 group. The maximum speckle contrast was reached in the ORL for both groups, although in the DM1 group, it occurs closer to the choroid, at 64 ± 8 µm (p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Statistically significant differences were found in speckle contrast and thickness between the control and the DM1 group, suggesting an IRL alteration of DM1 patients, supporting the retinal neurodegeneration before DR signs are observed.

RESUMO

Background: The relationship between children's sleep and health has been widely examined; however, research focused on the link between sleep and sensory reactivity in children without medical conditions is relatively new and based on studies with small samples. Hence, we aimed at exploring the association between sleep duration and quality and prevalence of sensory reactivity in a population-based sample of children aged 3-7. Methods: We examined data on 579 school-age children from the InProS project, a cross-sectional population-based study. Children's sleep duration was classified as <10 vs. ≥10 h/day, and sleep quality was measured using the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire, defining poor quality sleep as a score of ≥0.33. The Short Sensory Profile (SSP) was used to classify children with or without sensory reactivity using the cut-off points proposed by W. Dunn for SSP total score and each SSP subscale. Prevalence ratios (PR) using Poisson multiple regression models with robust variance were estimated to examine main associations. Results: Around a third (32.6%; n = 189) slept <10 h/day and 10.4% presented poor sleep quality. The prevalence of sensory reactivity was 29.5% for total SSP (<155), 11.4% for tactile sensitivity (<30), 15% for taste/smell sensitivity (<15), 22.5% for movement sensitivity (<13), 49.1% for under-responsive/seeks sensation (<27), 44.4% for auditory filtering (<23), 12.4% for low energy/weak (<26), and 25.4% for visual/auditory sensitivity (<19). Main findings indicated that poor sleep quality was significantly associated with a greater prevalence of sensory reactivity for SSP total score (PR = 1.27; IC 95%: 1.18; 1.38), tactile sensitivity (PR = 1.09, IC95%: 1.00-1.19), taste/smell sensitivity (PR = 1.18, IC95%: 1.08-1.30), under-responsive/seeks sensation (PR = 1.28, IC95%: 1.20-1.37), auditory filtering (PR = 1.31, IC95%: 1.23-1.39), low energy/weak (PR = 1.14, IC95%: 1.04-1.25) and audiovisual sensitivity (PR = 1.15, IC95%: 1.05-1.26) scores after adjusting for potential confounders. Conclusions: In this study, we observed that poor sleep quality was statistically significantly associated with a higher prevalence of sensory reactivity as measured by the total SSP and almost all SSP subscales. To our knowledge, this is the first time that this association has been explored and reported. Further research from prospective studies is required to confirm these findings.

RESUMO

This study investigates the effect of thyroid hormones on the morphology of hippocampal neurons in adult rats. Hypo- and hyperthyroidism were induced by adding 0.02% methimazole and 1% l-thyroxine, in drinking water from 40 days of age, respectively. When the rats were 89 days old their brains were removed and stained by a modified Golgi method and blood samples were collected in order to measure T4 serum levels. Neurons were selected and drawn using a camera lucida. Our results show that methimazole administration reduces the dendritic branching of the apical shafts of CA3 and CA1 pyramidal neurons mainly by increasing the distance to the first branch point in both types of neurons, and reducing branch points in the radius of 50 microm from the soma in CA1 neurons. Nevertheless, it was observed an increase of apical spine density in CA3 neurons from this group. Thyroxine reduces apical and basal tree of CA3 pyramidal neurons increasing the distance to the first branch point, reducing branch points in the radius of 50 microm from the soma and increases their apical and basal spine density. In CA1 field, thyroxine reduces the number of basal branch points. Both treatments seems to provoke alterations in the same direction reducing the dendritic branching and increasing spine density, although no significances appeared in some of the parameters analyzed. The effects are more evident in thyroxine than methimazole group; and in CA3 neurons than in CA1 neurons. In discussion it is pointed that the increase of spine density could be a mechanism to compensate the functionality reduction that can be provoke by the treatment effect on dendritic branching.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To establish the frequency of JAK2, MPL and CALR mutations in Argentinean patients with BCR-ABL1-negative  myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and to compare their clinical and haematological features. METHODS: Mutations of JAK2V617F, JAK2 exon 12, MPL W515L/K and CALR were analysed in 439 Argentinean patients with BCR-ABL1-negative MPN, including 176 polycythemia vera (PV), 214 essential thrombocythemia (ET) and 49 primary myelofibrosis (PMF). RESULTS: In 94.9% of PV, 85.5% ET and 85.2% PMF, we found mutations in JAK2, MPL or CALR. 74.9% carried JAK2V617F, 12.3% CALR mutations, 2.1% MPL mutations and 10.7% were triple negative. In ET, nine types of CALR mutations were identified, four of which were novel. PMF patients were limited to types 1 and 2, type 2 being more frequent. DISCUSSION: In ET, patients with CALR mutation were younger and had higher platelet counts than those with JAK2V617F and triple negative. In addition, JAK2V617F patients had high leucocyte and haemoglobin values compared with CALR-mutated and triple-negative patients. In PMF, patients with mutant CALR were associated with higher platelet counts. CONCLUSION: Our study underscores the importance of JAK2, MPL and CALR genotyping for accurate diagnosis of patients with BCR-ABL1-negative MPN.

The case report of a 42 years, black skin patient is described, he attended the Peripheral Tumors Surgery Service in Conrado Benítez García Teaching Provincial Cancer Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, due to a hyperpigmented dark lesion in the left side of the scrotum, next to the raphe region, of approximately 4 mm and irregular borders that didn't elevate the skin or hurted. An excision of the lesion was carried out and the histological and pathological study revealed the existence of a melanoma, without ulceration or satelitosis, with radial growth, reason why there was a deep examination of the operated area in search of margins without affectation and the bilateral groin lymph nodes were dried up in a prophylactic way. Then chemotherapy and interferon injections were indicated. The patient maintained a favorable clinical course until a year and a half after the surgery.

RESUMO

A 21-year-old male African elephant (Loxodonta africana) died suddenly with no previous medical history. Grossly, there were severe multifocal epicardial and endocardial hemorrhages of the atria and ventricles, hydropericardium, multifocal pleural hemorrhages, and severe pulmonary congestion and edema. Histologically, there was fibrinoid vasculitis and thrombosis in the heart and lung and myocardial necrosis. Citrobacter freundii was isolated in abundance in pure culture from liver and heart samples. Low levels of multiples types of elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV-6, EEHV-2B, and EEHV-3A) were detected in spleen samples, but not in heart samples. The levels of EEHV DNA found were much lower than those usually associated with acute EEHV hemorrhagic disease, and many other genomic loci that would normally be found in such cases were evidently below the level of detection. Therefore, these findings are unlikely to indicate lethal EEHV disease. Polymerase chain reaction for encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) and toxicology for oleander (Nerium oleander) were negative. Stress, resulting from recent transport, and antimicrobial therapy may have contributed to the death of this animal.

RESUMO

Thyroid hormone is essential for proper development of the mammalian CNS. Previous studies have documented a decrease in the ability of neonatal hypothyroid animals to learn and to habituate to maze tests and an increase in spontaneous activity. However, there is little information about the effects of perinatal (i.e. perinatal and postnatal) hypothyroidism on behaviour. The aim of the present work was to investigate the longitudinal effects of perinatal hypothyroidism on certain aspects of the behaviour in rats. Neuromotor competence was tested at 21, 40 and 60 days, novelty-directed exploratory behaviour and anxiety-related behaviour were evaluated at 40 and 60 days by means of the Boissier tests and associative learning ability was tested at 80 days by means of a step-through passive avoidance task. The persistence of the effects of perinatal hypothyroidism on psychomotor performance was highly dependent on the task examined. Perinatal hypothyroidism caused an increase of locomotor activity as revealed by the total distance travelled in the Boissier test and this increase also comprised a component of decreased anxiety-related behaviour. Methimazole-treated subjects also had higher head-dip scores than controls at 40 days while no differences were observed at 60 days. Finally, our results showed that methimazole-treated rats performed poorly in a passive avoidance learning task.

RESUMO

Previous studies have documented a decrease in the ability of neonatal hypothyroid animals to learn and habituate to maze tests, and an increase in spontaneous activity. However, there is little information about the effects of perinatal (i.e., prenatal and postnatal) hypothyroidism on behaviour. The present study was designed to assess whether perinatal hypothyroidism in rats induces alteration on acquisition and/or short- and long-term retention of a learned response in male Wistar rats. Perinatal hypothyroidism was induced by prolonged (E9-P21) exposure of pregnant and lactating dams to methimazole (administered orally in drinking water, 0.2 mg/ml). Cognitive function was tested at 50 days by means of a step-through passive avoidance task. The effects of perinatal hypothyroidism on the retention of the passive avoidance response are long lasting being, however, highly dependent on the retention after the original training. Our results showed that methimazole-treated rats performed more poorly when retention was tested at long-term (24 h and 7 days) retention interval. Instead, methimazole-treated rats showed longer retrieval latencies than the control ones did when retention was tested at short term (1 h).

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of thyroid function on the activity and exploratory behaviour of male Wistar rats. Dysthyroidism was induced by adding drugs to their drinking water from the ninth day of gestation. This method is not as stressful as daily thyroxine injections or thyroidectomy, and therefore did not affect the analysed behavioural patterns. After weaning, the drugs were administered to the young rats until the end of the experiment. Activity and exploration were measured using the Boissier test, a light-darkness test and an open-field test when they were 77 days old. In order to verify that the animals' motor capacity had not been impaired, a psychomotor battery was used. Chronic hyperthyroidism produced a significant increase in activity, but did not affect exploration. On the other hand, hypothyroidism did not affect activity, but did increase exploration. This increase in exploration was observed in activity-independent behavioural parameters, such as head dipping and glancing.
