BACKGROUND: Although there are solid findings regarding the detrimental effect of alcohol consumption, the existing evidence on the effect of other dietary factors on breast cancer (BC) risk is inconclusive. This study aimed to evaluate the association between dietary patterns and risk of BC in Spanish women, stratifying by menopausal status and tumour subtype, and to compare the results with those of Alternate Healthy Index (AHEI) and Alternate Mediterranean Diet Score (aMED). METHODS: We recruited 1017 incident BC cases and 1017 matched healthy controls of similar age (±5 years) without a history of BC. The association between 'a priori' and 'a posteriori' developed dietary patterns and BC in general and according to menopausal status and intrinsic tumour subtypes (ER+/PR+ and HER2-; HER2+; and ER-/PR- and HER2-) was evaluated using logistic and multinomial regression models. RESULTS: Adherence to the Western dietary pattern was related to higher risk of BC (OR for the top vs the bottom quartile 1.46 (95% CI 1.06-2.01)), especially in premenopausal women (OR=1.75; 95% CI 1.14-2.67). In contrast, the Mediterranean pattern was related to a lower risk (OR for the top quartile vs the bottom quartile 0.56 (95% CI 0.40-0.79)). Although the deleterious effect of the Western pattern was similarly observed in all tumour subtypes, the protective effect of our Mediterranean pattern was stronger for triple-negative tumours (OR=0.32; 95% CI 0.15-0.66 and Pheterogeneity=0.04). No association was found between adherence to the Prudent pattern and BC risk. The associations between 'a priori' indices and BC risk were less marked (OR for the top vs the bottom quartile of AHEI=0.69; 95% CI 0.51-0.94 and aMED=0.74; 95% CI 0.46-1.18)). CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm the harmful effect of a Western diet on BC risk, and add new evidence on the benefits of a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, oily fish and vegetable oils for preventing all BC subtypes, and particularly triple-negative tumours.

Twenty-two landrace-derived inbred lines from the Spanish Barley Core Collection (SBCC) were found to display high levels of resistance to a panel of 27 isolates of the fungus Blumeria graminis that exhibit a wide variety of virulences. Among these lines, SBCC145 showed high overall resistance and a distinctive spectrum of resistance compared with the other lines. Against this background, the main goal of the present work was to investigate the genetic basis underlying such resistance using a doubled haploid population derived from a cross between SBCC145 and the elite spring cultivar Beatrix. The population was genotyped with the 1,536-SNP Illumina GoldenGate Oligonucleotide Pool Assay (Barley OPA-1 or BOPA1 for short), whereas phenotypic analysis was performed using two B. graminis isolates. A major quantitative trait locus (QTL) for resistance to both isolates was identified on the long arm of chromosome 6H (6HL) and accounted for ca. 60% of the phenotypic variance. Depending on the B. graminis isolate tested, three other minor QTLs were detected on chromosomes 2H and 7H, which explained less than 5% of the phenotypic variation each. In all cases, the alleles for resistance derived from the Spanish parent SBCC145. The position, the magnitude of the effect observed and the proportion of phenotypic variation accounted for by the QTL on 6HL suggest this is a newly identified locus for broad-based resistance to powdery mildew.

Wegener's granulomatosis belongs to the group of small vessel vasculitis associated with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies characterized by granulomatous inflammation and necrotising vasculitis in various organs with particular involvement of the upper and lower respiratory tracts and kidneys. Wegener's granulomatosis is a rare disorder in childhood and early diagnosis of this disease is critical to the long-term prognosis of the disease. The presence of positive cytoplasmic antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody staining or a high titre of proteinase 3 antibodies were added as new criteria of vasculitis in childhood. This article presents a case of Wegener's granulomatosis, with the presence of anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibodies with cytoplasmic pattern with absence of anti-proteinase 3 antibodies and presence of high levels of anti-cathepsin G antibodies, rarely described in Wegener's granulomatosis.

The pool of Western Mediterranean landraces has been under-utilised for barley breeding so far. The objectives of this study were to assess genetic diversity in a core collection of inbred lines derived from Spanish barley landraces to establish its relationship to barleys from other origins, and to correlate the distribution of diversity with geographical and climatic factors. To this end, 64 SSR were used to evaluate the polymorphism among 225 barley (Hordeum vulgare ssp. vulgare) genotypes, comprising two-row and six-row types. These included 159 landraces from the Spanish barley core collection (SBCC) plus 66 cultivars, mainly from European countries, as a reference set. Out of the 669 alleles generated, a large proportion of them were unique to the six-row Spanish barleys. An analysis of molecular variance revealed a clear genetic divergence between the six-row Spanish barleys and the reference cultivars, whereas this was not evident for the two-row barleys. A model-based clustering analysis identified an underlying population structure, consisting of four main populations for the whole genotype set, and suggested further possible subdivision within two of these populations. Most of the six-row Spanish landraces clustered into two groups that corresponded to geographic regions with contrasting environmental conditions. The existence of wide genetic diversity in Spanish germplasm, possibly related to adaptation to a broad range of environmental conditions, and its divergence from current European cultivars confirm its potential as a new resource for barley breeders, and make the SBCC a valuable tool for the study of adaptation in barley.

The STS marker MWG699/TaqI is closely linked to the vrs1 locus and has been proposed as a marker of domestication in barley. This study included 257 cultivated barleys of both two- and six-rowed varieties, mainly from the western Mediterranean region. These included many landraces from the Spanish barley core collection, Moroccan landraces, and a set of accessions from other European countries. Restriction analysis of amplified DNA revealed three alleles, as previously described. Most of the two-rowed entries had the same allele, type K. Six-rowed entries showed both types A and D. Indeed, type D was widespread among Spanish landraces and commercial varieties from central Europe. It was also found in some two-rowed landraces originating from Spain and Morocco. Barleys with the D haplotype were predominantly winter types, whereas the A haplotype was evenly distributed among spring and winter types. These results support the existence of two different genetic sources among six-rowed Spanish landraces.

Growth reduction or cessation is an initial response of Atriplex nummularia L. cells to NaCl. However, A. nummularia L. cells that are adapted to 342 and 428 mM NaCl are capable of sustained growth in the presence of salt. Cells that are adapted to NaCl exhibit a reduced rate of division compared to unadapted cells. Unlike salt adapted cells of the glycophyte Nicotiana tabacum L., A. nummularia L. cells do not exhibit reduced rate of cell expansion after adaptation. However, the cell expansion rate of unadapted A. nummularia L. cells is considerably slower than that of unadapted glycophyte cells and this normally low rate of cell expansion may contribute to the enhanced capacity of the halophyte to tolerate salt. Turgor of NaCl adapted cells was equivalent to unadapted cells indicating that the cells of the halophyte do not respond to salt by osmotic "over adjustment" as reported for the glycophyte tobacco (Binzel et al. 1985, Plant Physiol. 79:118-125).

Transgenic sorghum plants have been obtained after microprojectile bombardment of immature zygotic embryos of a drought-resistant sorghum cultivar, P898012. DNA delivery parameters were optimized based on transient expression of R and C1 maize anthocyanin regulatory elements in scutellar cells. The protocol for obtaining transgenic plants consists of the delivery of the bar gene to immature zygotic embryos and the imposition of bialaphos selection pressure at various stages during culture, from induction of somatic embryogenesis to rooting of regenerated plantlets. One in about every 350 embryos produced embryogenic tissues that survived bialaphos treatment; six transformed callus lines were obtained from three of the eight sorghum cultivars used in this research. Transgenic (T0) plants were obtained from cultivar P898012 (two independent transformation events). The presence of the bar and uidA genes in the T0 plants was confirmed by Southern blot analysis of genomic DNA. Phosphinothricin acetyltransferase activity was detected in extracts of the T0 plants. These plants were resistant to local application of the herbicide Ignite/Basta, and the resistance was inherited in T1 plants as a single dominant locus.

A peptide (molecular mass 50 kilodaltons) that is immunologically related to tobacco osmotin was detected in cells of the halophyte Atriplex nummularia. This protein was constitutively expressed in both unadapted and NaCl-adapted cells. A predominant osmotin-like peptide (molecular mass 24 kilodaltons) was also found in culture media after cell growth. Two unique A. nummularia cDNA clones, pA8 and pA9, encoding osmotin-like proteins have been isolated. The pA8 and pA9 inserts are 952 and 792 base pairs and encode peptides of 222 and 224 amino acids, respectively. The peptide deduced from pA8 has a molecular mass of 23,808 daltons and theoretical isoelectric point of 8.31, whereas the peptide derived from pA9 has a molecular mass of 23,827 daltons and an isoelectric point of 6.88. Unique transcripts were detected by the inserts of the cDNA clones, two (1.2 and 1.0 kilobases) by pA8 and one (0.9 kilobase) by pA9. The pA8 transcripts were constitutively accumulated in unadapted and NaCl-adapted cells, whereas the mRNA levels were up-regulated by abscisic acid treatment. The level of pA9 mRNA was induced by NaCl treatment and increased in cells as a function of NaCl adaptation. Southern analysis of the genomic DNA indicated the presence of osmotin-like multigene families in A. nummularia.

Assessment of dormancy inception, maintenance and release was studied for artificially dried immature seeds harvested throughout seed development in the barley cv. Triumph and its mutant line TL43. Each was grown in Spain and Scotland under low and high dormancy inducing conditions, respectively. Both TL43 and Triumph followed a similar pattern of release from dormancy across the seasons, although seeds of TL43 were able to germinate at an earlier seed development stage. Abscisic acid (ABA) content was also studied in immature grains throughout the seed development period. Total amount of ABA in seeds of Triumph and TL43 was higher in plants grown in Scotland than in Spain. However, no clear genotypic differences in ABA pattern in the course of grain development could be detected whilst significant genotypic differences were observed for germination percentage (GP). Endogenous ABA content alone throughout grain development did not explain genetic differences in GP within environments. Environmental and genetic differences in dormancy were also observed on mature seeds throughout the after-ripening period. The initial germination (GP(0)) played a key role in the sensitivity to ABA of post-harvest mature seeds. For the same after-ripening stage, TL43 was more insensitive to exogenous ABA than Triumph. However, ABA responses in seeds of the two genotypes with similar GP(0) at different after-ripening stages were comparable. Therefore, differences in exogenous ABA sensitivity of post-harvest mature grain of these two genotypes seemed to be determined by, or coincident with, the initial germination percentage.

A population comprising 102 doubled haploid lines were produced from a cross between Beka, a barley cultivar widely grown in Spain, and Logan, a north American cultivar with inherently low protein content, a character considered to derive from the cultivar Karl. The intentions were to determine whether low-nitrogen malting barleys could be developed in Spain, and if genetic factors that influenced protein content were similarly expressed in widely diverse environments, i.e. northeastern Spain and eastern Scotland. An extensive map comprising 187 molecular markers was developed. Expressed sequence-tagged-derived markers were used in addition to anonymous simple sequence repeats to determine the potential for identifying candidate genes for quantitative trait loci (QTLs), and 22 such markers were mapped for the first time. There was transgressive segregation for both yield and protein content, and the gene for low protein from Logan was not expressed in the Scottish environment. In 2002, high yield was associated with earlier heading date in Spain, while late heading at the Scottish site was associated with greater lodging and lower thousand-kernel weight. These appeared to be possible pleiotropic effects of a factor detected on chromosome 2H. Using information from a consensus map, it was shown that this locus on 2H was in the region of the photoperiod response gene Eam6. A QTL explaining 18% of the variation in grain protein content was detected on chromosome 5H in a region in which a gene for nitrate reductase was previously observed. No effect on grain protein was associated with chromosome 6H, which has been suggested as the location of the low protein gene from Karl. However, it is likely that Karl contained more than one genetic factor reducing protein, and we postulate that the gene on 6H may have been lost during the breeding of Logan.

El proposito de este estudio fue estimar la validez de contenido y la confiabilidad por mitades de la prueba de logoaudiometria adaptada al español colombiano para la poblacion infantil de Santafe de Bogota de 3.5 a 10 años basada en la prueba Northwestern University Children's Perception of Speech: NU-CHIPS (Elliot y Katz, 1980). Esta investigacion se inscribe en el area de la medicion audiologica y adopto un diseño de tipo descriptivo correlacional. Se tomo una muestra de 64 niños, 47 con audición normal y 17 con hipoacusia neurosensorial bilateral entre moderada y severa. La prueba fue aplicada a esta poblacion en un contexto cerrado de respuesta. Los resultados obtenidos sugirieron un alto grado de validez mediante el balance fonetico del instrumento a traves de expertos y de la aplicacion empirica de la prueba piloto y la confiabilidad por la correlacion existente entre las variables analizadas a traves de las pruebas estadisticas correlacionales Spearman Brown y Kuder Richardson 20, los cuales no arrojaron diferencias significativas en la ejecucion de la prueba por los sujetos con relacion a los datos normativos de la prueba originalel propósito
