OBJECTIVE: To test the feasibility of objective assessments using the TekScan MatScan pressure mat plantar pressure measurement as a time-effective screening service for Parkinson disease (PD) with and without freezing of gait (FOG) history. DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study. SETTING: Largest medical center in southern Taiwan. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Plantar pressure measurements including average peak pressure (PP), contact area (CA), and pressure-time integral (PTI) in static and dynamic conditions as well as clinical scores during off-medication states. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 103 patients with PD and 22 age- and sex-matched volunteers without PD (N=125). RESULTS: Plantar pressure assessment including PP, CA, and PTI on the total foot areas between participants with PD and controls without PD in the static conditions are similar. Patients with PD presented higher PTI on total foot areas as well as hallux, midfoot area, and medial and lateral heels during dynamic conditions than controls without PD. The PP, CA, and PTI during the static condition and CA during the dynamic condition on the hallux showed statistical significance between PD with and without FOG history. Stepwise logistic regression after controlling with age and body mass index showed only PTI on hallux (static conditions) was significantly associated with the presence of FOG. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in diagnostic accuracy for FOG in PTI was statistically significant (P=.002; area under the curve, 0.71). CONCLUSIONS: FOG screening using the TekScan MatScan pressure mat plantar pressure measurement could serve as a time-effective screening service at the outpatient clinic. Based on our study, PTI may be valuable in auxiliary diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate and compare the therapeutic efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA), between primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) patients, with or without previous parathyroidectomy (PTX). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 21 patients (7 PHPT, 14 SHPT) underwent RFA for hyperparathyroidism (HPT) at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. Five of the 14 SHPT patients had previously received PTX. The laboratory data, volume change of each parathyroid nodule, symptomatic scores, and complications were analyzed and compared between all groups at 1 and 7 days, and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after RFA. RESULTS: After RFA, the volume reduction ratio (VRR) for all patients at the last follow-up was 93.76%, and clinical symptoms significantly improved. At 12 months, all PHPT patients achieved successful treatment of intact PTH (iPTH). In SHPT patients, the mean iPTH value significantly decreased 1-day post-RFA, subsequently exhibiting a transient rebound which proceeded to decrease, with 57.1% reaching successful treatment standards. SHPT patients with PTX showed a lower complication score, shorter ablation time, higher iPTH baseline and outcomes, and lower VRR, compared to patients without PTX. The serum calcium level significantly decreased to normal range in 85.7% of all patients at 12 months. Severe hypocalcemia occurred in 23.8% at 1 week, and all were corrected with calcium supplements. CONCLUSIONS: RFA demonstrates a therapeutic efficacy similar to PTX. It can thus be considered an effective alternative treatment for PHPT, SHPT, or post-PTX patients who are unsuitable for another PTX.

INTRODUCTION: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is recognized as an effective technique for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules (BTNs), although the long-term results are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the residual vital volume increase, regrowth, and new growth over a 2-year period after RFA among different nodule volume groups. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 135 patients with 153 BTNs who underwent ultrasound guided RFA. The BTNs were categorized into small (<10 mL), medium (10-30 mL), and large (>30 mL) according to the initial volume of BTNs prior to ablation. The volume changes of each nodule were analyzed at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after RFA. New growth was defined as the growth in volume not found in the early follow-up on ultrasonography. RESULTS: The initial ablation ratio of all BTNs was 99.67%. The mean volume reduction ratio (VRR) of BTNs was 85.53% after 2-year follow-up. The small nodule group showed a lower VRR compared to the other two groups at the 1-month follow-up, and there was no difference of VRR at the subsequent follow-ups. The incidence of residual vital volume increase was 4.58%. The overall incidence of regrowth was 3.92% and the mean timing of regrowth was 16.71 months. New growth occurred in 18.95% of patients. No further treatment was required in the majority of cases. CONCLUSION: RFA achieved a clinically relevant volume reduction in different sizes of single BTNs which persisted for at least 2 years, thereby preventing the need for retreatment.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) has increased rapidly in recent decades, with a favorable overall prognosis. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound (US)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treating low-risk PTMC in Taiwan. METHODS: This prospective study included patients with PTMC who were ineligible or refused surgery and underwent US-guided RFA between October 2018 and June 2020. US and computed tomography (CT) were performed before RFA to assess tumor lesions and exclude cervical lymph node metastasis. Sequential US follow-up following RFA was performed after 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, and yearly thereafter. Volume reduction ratio (VRR) and complete disappearance rate of tumor at one year were evaluated. RESULTS: 13 PTMCs in 12 patients were enrolled with a mean follow-up of 16.2 ± 8.1 months (range, 1-24 months). The median largest tumor diameter and tumor volume before RFA were 0.76 cm and 0.15 ml (range, 0.02-0.37 ml). The median (interquartile range, IQR) volume and VRR at 12 months post-RFA were 0 (0, 0.03) ml (p = 0.033) and 100% (84.26%, 100%) (p = 0.008). Eight tumors (61.54%) were completely disappeared at 12 months post-RFA and no tumor recurrence, lymph nodes, or distant metastasis were noted. All tumors were successfully treated without complications. CONCLUSION: Minimally invasive US-guided RFA is an effective and safe alternative for low-risk PTMC, resulting a satisfied VRR.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) can develop impulse control disorders (ICDs) while undergoing a pharmacological treatment for motor control dysfunctions with a dopamine agonist (DA). Conventional clinical interviews or questionnaires can be biased and may not accurately diagnose at the early stage. A wearable electroencephalogram (EEG)-sensing headset paired with an examination procedure can be a potential user-friendly method to explore ICD-related signatures that can detect its early signs and progression by reflecting brain activity. METHODS: A stereotypical Go/NoGo test that targets impulse inhibition was performed on 59 individuals, including healthy controls, patients with PD, and patients with PD diagnosed by ICDs. We conducted two Go/NoGo sessions before and after the DA-pharmacological treatment for the PD and ICD groups. A low-cost LEGO-like EEG headset was used to record concurrent EEG signals. Then, we used the event-related potential (ERP) analytical framework to explore ICD-related EEG abnormalities after DA treatment. RESULTS: After the DA treatment, only the ICD-diagnosed PD patients made more behavioral errors and tended to exhibit the deterioration for the NoGo N2 and P3 peak amplitudes at fronto-central electrodes in contrast to the HC and PD groups. Particularly, the extent of the diminished NoGo-N2 amplitude was prone to be modulated by the ICD scores at Fz with marginal statistical significance (r = - 0.34, p = 0.07). CONCLUSIONS: The low-cost LEGO-like EEG headset successfully captured ERP waveforms and objectively assessed ICD in patients with PD undergoing DA treatment. This objective neuro-evidence could provide complementary information to conventional clinical scales used to diagnose ICD adverse effects.

This study aims to construct tissue engineering stents by using the long fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (LFT) technique to develop artery stents. The experimental method combines fibers, the LFT technique, and electrospinning technique. First, the biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol yarns are twisted and coated in polycaprolactone/polyethylene glycol blends through the LFT technique. Next, the weft-knitting and heat treatment are used to establish the stent structure, after which poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is electrospun to coat the stents. The morphology, mechanical, and biological properties of tissue engineering stents are evaluated. The test results indicated that the use of the LFT technique retains the softness of filaments, which facilitates the subsequent weft-knitting process. The coating of blends and electrospinning of PEO have a positive influence on the tissue engineering stents, as demonstrated by the tensile strength of 59.93 N and compressive strength of 6.10 N. Moreover, the in vitro degradation of stents exhibits a stabilized process. The water contact angle is 20.33°, and the cell survival rate in 24 h is over 80%. The proposed tissue engineering stents are good candidates for artery stent structure.

INTRODUCTION: To investigate the structural changes of the brain that correlate with physical frailty and cognitive impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. METHODS: Sixty-one PD patients and 59 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. For each participant, a frailty assessment using Fried's criteria and comprehensive neuropsychological testing using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III and Cognitive Ability Screening Instrument were conducted, and structural brain MR images were acquired for voxel-based morphometric analysis. The neuropsychological testing includes various tests in these five domains: attention, executive, memory, speech and language, and visuospatial functions. Exploratory group-wise comparisons of gray matter volume (GMV) in the PD patients and controls were conducted. Voxel-wise multiple linear regression analyses were conducted for physical frailty-related and cognitive impairment-related GMV changes in the PD patients. Voxel-wise multiple linear regressions were also performed with the five cognitive domains separated using the same model. RESULTS: The PD patients exhibited diffuse GMV reductions in comparison to the controls. In the PD patients, physical frailty-related decreases in GMV were observed in the bilateral frontal and occipital cortices, while cognitive impairment-related decreases in GMV were observed in the bilateral frontal, occipital, and temporal cortices. These regions overlap in the lateral occipital cortex. After the five domains of cognitive functions were analyzed separately, physical frailty-related decreases in GMV still overlap in lateral occipital cortices with every domain of cognitive impairment-related decreases in GMV. CONCLUSION: Reduced GMV in the lateral occipital cortex is associated with cognitive impairment and physical frailty in PD patients. KEY POINTS: • Physical frailty in PD was associated with decreased GMV in the frontal and occipital cortices, while cognitive impairment was associated with decreased GMV in the frontal, temporal, and occipital cortices. • Physical frailty and cognitive impairment were both associated with decreased GMV in the lateral occipital cortex, which is part of the ventral object-based visual pathway. • Decreased GMV in the lateral occipital cortex may serve as a potential imaging biomarker for physical frailty and cognitive impairment in PD.

Hyperkalemia is often associated with cardiac dysfunction. In this study an earthworm extract (dilong) was prepared from dried Pheretima aspergillum powder and its effect against high-KCl challenge was determined in H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells. H9c2 cells pre-treated with dilong (31.25, 62.5, 125, and 250 mg/mL) for 24 hours, where challenged with different doses of KCl treatment for 3 hours to determine the protective mechanisms of dilong against cardiac fibrosis. High-KCl administration induced mitochondrial injury and elevated the levels of pro-apoptotic proteins. The mediators of fibrosis such as ERK, uPA, SP1, and CTGF were also found to be upregulated in high-KCl condition. However, dilong treatment enhanced IGF1R/PI3k/Akt activation which is associated with cell survival. In addition, dilong also reversed high-KCl induced cardiac fibrosis related events in H9c2 cells and displayed a strong cardio-protective effect. Therefore, dilong is a potential agent to overcome cardiac events associated with high-KCl toxicity.

Systemic inflammation induced by bacterial infection is one of several causative agents for cardiovascular disorders in patients with periodontal disease. Experimental results indicate that miRNAs play important roles in systemic inflammation induced by endotoxins. Further evidence states that stem cell based therapy shows potential in the treatment of inflammatory responses induced by sepsis. This study investigates if stem cells show protective effects on cardiomyocyte damage induced by porphyromonas gingivalis-LPS (Pg-LPS) through regulating miRNAs. H9c2 cardiomyoblasts and neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs) were damaged using Pg-LPS in this study. Pg-LPS damaged H9c2 or NRCMs were then rescued using adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC). The experimental results reveal that Pg-LPS treatment is capable of inducing TLR4/NFκB axis activation, cell death signaling and IGF1R/PI3 K/Akt axis suppression. miR181b was downregulated in Pg-LPS damaged H9c2/NRCMs. All markers were improved in H9c2/NRCMs cocultured with ADSC. miR181b mimic and inhibitor confirmed that miR181b plays a central role in regulating the cardio protective effect on Pg-LPS damaged H9c2/NRCMs cocultured with ADSC. miR181b acts as potential therapeutic marker in cardiomyopathy induced by Pg-LPS. Transplantation of adipose-derived stem cells show potential in the treatment of cardiomyopathy induced by porphyromonas gingivalis endotoxin via regulation of miR181b.

BACKGROUND: To identify the vulnerable areas associated with systemic oxidative stress and further disruption of these vulnerable areas by measuring the associated morphology and functional network alterations in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with and without cognitive impairment. METHODS: This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board of KCGMH, and written informed consent was obtained. Between December 2010 and May 2015, 41 PD patients with different levels of cognitive functions and 29 healthy volunteers underwent peripheral blood sampling to quantify systemic oxidative stress, as well as T1W volumetric and resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) scans. Rs-fMRI was used to derive the healthy intrinsic connectivity patterns seeded by the vulnerable areas associated with any of the significant oxidative stress markers. The two groups were compared in terms of the functional connectivity correlation coefficient (fc-CC) and gray matter volume (GMV) of the network seeded by the vulnerable areas. RESULTS: The levels of oxidative stress markers, including leukocyte apoptosis and adhesion molecules, were significantly higher in the PD group. Using whole-brain VBM-based correlation analysis, the bilateral mesial temporal lobes (MTLs) were identified as the most vulnerable areas associated with lymphocyte apoptosis (P < 0.005). We found that the MTL network of healthy subjects resembled the PD-associated atrophy pattern. Furthermore, reduced fc-CC and GMV were further associated with the aggravated cognitive impairment. CONCLUSION: The MTLs are the vulnerable areas associated with peripheral lymphocyte infiltration, and disruptions of the MTL functional network in both architecture and functional connectivity might result in cognitive impairments in Parkinson's disease.

The process of autophagy in heart cells maintains homeostasis during cellular stress such as hypoxia by removing aggregated proteins and damaged organelles and thereby protects the heart during the times of starvation and ischemia. However, autophagy can lead to substantial cell death under certain circumstances. BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kDa protein-interacting protein 3 (BNIP3), a hypoxia-induced marker, has been shown to induce both autophagy and apoptosis. A BNIP3-docked organelle, e.g., mitochondria, also determines whether autophagy or apoptosis will take place. Estrogen (E2) and estrogen receptor (ER) alpha (ERα) have been shown to protect the heart against mitochondria-dependent apoptosis. The aim of the present study is to investigate the mechanisms by which ERα regulates BNIP3-induced apoptosis and autophagy, which is associated with hypoxic injury, in cardiomyoblast cells. An in vitro model to mimic hypoxic injury in the heart by engineering H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells to overexpress BNIP3 was established. Further, the effects of E2 and ERα in BNIP3-induced apoptosis and autophagy were determined in BNIP3 expressing H9c2 cells. Results from TUNEL assay and Immunoflourecense assay for LC3 puncta formation, respectively, revealed that ERα/E2 suppresses BNIP3-induced apoptosis and autophagy. The Western blot analysis showed ERα/E2 decreases the protein levels of caspase 3 (apoptotic marker), Atg5, and LC3-II (autophagic markers). Co-immunoprecipitation of BNIP3 and immunoblotting of Bcl-2 and Rheb showed that ERα reduced the interaction between BNIP3 and Bcl-2 or Rheb. The results confirm that ERα binds to BNIP3 causing a reduction in the levels of functional BNIP3 and thereby inhibits cellular apoptosis and autophagy. In addition, ERα attenuated the activity of the BNIP3 promoter by binding to SP-1 or NFκB sites.

BACKGROUND: Several clinical trials on hypertonic fluid administration have been completed, but the results have been inconclusive. The objective of this study is to summarize current evidence for treating hypovolemic patients with hypertonic solutions by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Major electronic databases were searched from inception through June 2014. We included only randomized controlled trials involving hemorrhagic shock patients treated with hypertonic solutions. After screening 570 trials, 12 were eligible for the final analysis. Pooled effect estimates were calculated with a random effect model. RESULTS: The 12 studies included 6 trials comparing 7.5% hypertonic saline (HS) with 0.9% saline or Ringer's lactate solution and 11 trials comparing 7.5% hypertonic saline with dextran (HSD) with isotonic saline or Ringer's lactate. Overall, there were no statistically significant survival benefits for patients treated with HS (relative risk [RR], 0.96; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.82-1.12) or HSD (RR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.80-1.06). Treatment with hypertonic solutions was also not associated with increased complications (RR, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.78-1.36). Subgroup analysis on trauma patients in the prehospital or emergency department settings did not change these conclusions. There was no evidence of significant publication bias. Meta-regression analysis did not find any significant sources of heterogeneity. CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence does not reveal increased mortality when the administration of isotonic solutions is compared to HS or HSD in trauma patients with hemorrhagic shock. HS or HSD may be a viable alternative resuscitation fluid in the prehospital setting. Further studies are needed to determine the optimum volume and regimen of intravenous fluids for the treatment of trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: It is known that the medicinal herb Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. is widely used as a remedy for diarrhea as well as the symptoms accompanying hypertension and cerebrovascular disorders. Moreover, it has also been reported that Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. has beneficial effects on anti-senescence and neuro-protection. This study focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which the Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. fruits promote neuron regeneration. METHODS: A piece of silicone rubber was guided across a 15 mm gap in the sciatic nerve of a rat. This nerve gap was then filled with various doses of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. fruits to assess their regenerative effect on damaged nerves. Further, we investigated the role of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. fruits in RSC96 Schwann cell proliferation. RESULTS: Our current results showed that treatment with the extract of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. fruits triggers the phosphorylated insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor- phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/serine-threonine kinase pathway, and up-regulated the proliferating cell nuclear antigen in a dose-dependent manner. Cell cycle analysis on RSC96 Schwann cells showed that, after exposure to Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. fruit extract, the transition from the first gap phase to the synthesis phase occurs in 12-18 h. The expression of the cell cycle regulatory proteins cyclin D1, cyclin E and cyclin A increased in a dose-dependent manner. Transfection with a small interfering RNA blocked the expression of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and induced down-regulation both on the mRNA and protein levels, which resulted in a reduction of the expression of the survival factor B-cell lymphoma 2. CONCLUSION: We provide positive results that demonstrate that Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. fruits facilitate the survival and proliferation of RSC96 cells via insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling.

BACKGROUND: The potential benefits of earthworm (Pheretima aspergillum) for healing have received considerable attention recently. Osteoblast and osteoclast activities are very important in bone remodeling, which is crucial to repair bone injuries. This study investigated the effects of earthworm extract on bone cell activities. METHODS: Osteoblast-like MG-63 cells and RAW 264.7 macrophage cells were used for identifying the cellular effects of different concentrations of earthworm extract on osteoblasts and osteoclasts, respectively. The optimal concentration of earthworm extract was determined by mitochondrial colorimetric assay, alkaline phosphatase activity, matrix calcium deposition, Western blotting and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity. RESULTS: Earthworm extract had a dose-dependent effect on bone cell activities. The most effective concentration of earthworm extract was 3 mg/ml, significantly increasing osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, matrix calcium deposition and the expression levels of alkaline phosphatase, osteopontin and osteocalcin. Conversely, 3 mg/ml earthworm extract significantly reduced the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity of osteoclasts without altering cell viability. CONCLUSIONS: Earthworm extract has beneficial effects on bone cell cultures, indicating that earthworm extract is a potential agent for use in bone regeneration.

Brain biological age, which measures the aging process in the brain using neuroimaging data, has been used to assess advanced brain aging in neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson disease (PD). However, assuming that whole brain degeneration is uniform may not be sufficient for assessing the complex neurodegenerative processes in PD. In this study we constructed a multiscale brain age prediction models based on structural MRI of 1240 healthy participants. To assess the brain aging patterns using the brain age prediction model, 93 PD patients and 91 healthy controls matching for sex and age were included. We found increased global and regional brain age in PD patients. The advanced aging regions were predominantly noted in the frontal and temporal cortices, limbic system, basal ganglia, thalamus, and cerebellum. Furthermore, region-level rather than global brain age in PD patients was associated with disease severity. Our multiscale brain age prediction model could aid in the development of objective image-based biomarkers to detect advanced brain aging in neurodegenerative diseases.

Background and aim: Taxol modulates local inflammatory conditions in peripheral nerves, which may impair their regeneration and recovery when injured. This study aimed to determine the effects of rosmarinic acid (RA, a polyphenol constituent of many culinary herbs) on the regeneration of the sciatic nerves in the bridging conduits. Experimental procedure: In the cell study, RA decreased nuclear factor (NF)-κB activity induced by taxol in a dose dependency. In the animal model, taxol-treated rats were divided into 3 groups (n = 10/group): taxol (2 mg/kg body weight for 4 times) and taxol + RA (3 times/week for 4 weeks at 20 and 40 mg/kg body weight) groups. Macrophage infiltration, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) expression levels, neuronal connectivity, animal behavior, and neuronal electrophysiology were evaluated. Results and conclusion: At the end of 4 weeks, macrophage density, CGRP expression level, and axon number significantly increased in the RA group compared with the taxol group. The RA administration unaffected heat, cold plate licking latencies, and motor coordination. Moreover, the 40 mg/kg RA group had significantly larger nerve conduction velocity and less latency compared to the taxol group. This study suggested that RA could ameliorate local inflammatory conditions to augment the recovery of regenerating nerves by accelerating their regrowth and improving electrophysiological function in taxol-treated peripheral nerve injury repaired with the silicone rubber conduit.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We used a traditional Chinese medicine, alpinate oxyphyllae fructus (AOF), to evaluate its effect on Ang II-induced cardiac apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction. Ang II-treated H9c2 cells were administered AOF of 20-100 µg/mL concentrations. Ang II significantly increased TUNEL-positive nuclei in the H9c2 cells, effect was inhibited by AOF administration in both pre-treated and post-treated H9c2 cells. Caspases 9 and 3 activities were increased by Ang II and downregulated by AOF administration, especially in pre-treatment. AOF treatment reversed Ang II-induced mitochondria membrane potential instability in H9c2 cells as observed by JC-1 stain assay. Furthermore, pro-apoptotic proteins Bad and cytochrome c increased and decreased respectively under AOF administration. The levels of p-Bad anti-apoptotic protein were significantly increased after AOF treatment. This study indicates that mitochondrial dependent apoptosis induced by Ang II.

Laminated composites have been commonly applied to all fields. When made into laminated composites, Kevlar woven fabrics are able to provide the required functions. In this study, two types of TPU are incorporated to improve the intralayer features of Kevlar/TPU laminated composites. Hence, the Kevlar/TPU laminated composites consist of firmly bonded laminates while retaining flexibility of the fabrics. Being the interlayer of the laminated composites, the TPU layer provides adhesion while strengthening the tensile property, dynamic puncture resistance, and buffer strength of Kevlar/TPU laminated composites. The test results indicate that with a blending ratio of two types of TRU being 85/15 wt%, the Kevlar/TPU laminated composites exhibit a tensile strength of 18.08 MPa. When the stacking thickness is 1 mm, the tensile strength is improved to 357.73 N with the buffering strength reaching 4224.40 N. Notably, with a thickness being 1.2 mm, the laminated composites demonstrate a dynamic resistance being 672.15 N. In the meanwhile, functional Kevlar fabrics are allowed to keep the fiber morphology owing to the protection of TPU composite films. Considering the composition of protective gear, Kevlar/TPU laminated composites possess a powerful potential and are worthwhile exploring.

In this study, nonwoven fabrics, rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF), Basalt woven fabrics, and an aluminum foil film mold are used to produce multi-functional composite sheets with flame-retardant, sound-absorbing, and electromagnetic-shielding functions. The nonwoven layer is composed of Nomex fibers, flame-retardant PET fibers, and low-melting-point (LMPET) fibers via the needle rolling process. The optimal Nomex fiber/flame-retardant PET fiber/LMPET fiber (N/F/L) nonwoven fabrics are then combined with rigid polyurethane (PU) foam, Basalt woven fabric, and an aluminum foil film mold, thereby producing nonwoven/rigid polyurethane foam/Basalt woven fabric composite sheets that are wrapped in the aluminized foil film. The test results indicate that formed with a foaming density of 60 kg/m3 and 10 wt% of a flame retardant, the composite sheets exhibit electromagnetic interference shielding efficacy (EMI SE) that exceeds 40 dB and limiting oxygen index (LOI) that is greater than 26. The efficient and highly reproducible experimental design proposed in this study can produce multifunctional composite sheets that feature excellent combustion resistance, sound absorption, and EMI SE and are suitable for use in the transportation, industrial factories, and building wall fields.

This study proposes the composites with a sandwich structure that is primarily made by the multi-step foaming process. The staple material is polyurethane (PU) foam that is combined with carbon fibers, followed by a Kevlar woven fabric. The composites are evaluated in terms of puncture resistance, buffer absorption, and electromagnetic wave shielding effectiveness (EMSE). The manufacturing process provides the composites with a stabilized structure efficiently. Serving the interlayer, a Kevlar woven fabric are sealed between a top and a bottom layer consisting of both PU foam and an aluminum film in order, thereby forming five-layered composites. Namely, the upper and lower surfaces of the five-layered sandwiches are aluminum films which is laminated on a purpose for the EMSE reinforcement. The test results indicate that the PU foam composites are well bonded and thus acquire multiple functions from the constituent materials, including buffer absorption, puncture resistance, and EMSE. There is much prospect that the PU foam composites can be used as a protective material in diverse fields owing to a flexible range of functions.
