RESUMO

Violence against women is a phenomenon that involves at least 35% of women worldwide. Violence can be sexual, physical, and/or psychological, perpetrated by the partner, another family member, or a stranger. Violence is a public health problem because its consequences include higher morbidity, higher mortality, and short and long-term physical and psychological health diseases. Most studies prove an association between any type of violence and some chronic pain diagnoses but no one has done a complete collection of this evidence. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate whether this association is statistically significant, including the largest number of studies. Through the inclusion of 37 articles, the association has been demonstrated. Compared with no history of violence, women who did experience violence showed 2 times greater odds of developing chronic pain. The impact of violence was significant also on fibromyalgia separately, but not on pelvic pain.PROSPERO registrationPROSPERO CRD42023425477.

RESUMO

The Italian mafia organizations represent a subculture with values, beliefs, and goals that are antithetical to and undermining of the predominant society. The conduct of individual members includes such extreme violence for material gain, it may at least superficially suggest a severe personality disorder. Since the first edition of the DSM and into the 21st century, various terms have been used, sometimes interchangeably, but over time inconsistently, to designate the mentality and practices of mafia members. Only recently has the psychology of mafia members become a focus of serious scientific study. For the first time, investigators for the present study applied instruments, including the PCL-R, to examine for character psychopathology and specifically degrees of psychopathy in male and female mafia members, 20 female and 21 male members. Results showed some gender difference with the women having a higher score on Factor 1, in contrast to men who showed a lower score. Psychopathy and personality disorder were not found to be associated with membership in the mafia for either gender. Some psychopathic traits and gender differences warrant further research. Meanwhile these findings are consistent with a mentality characterized by beliefs and practices determined by a deviant culture rather than psychopathology.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The health education impact Questionnaire (heiQ) measures eight self-management skills in people with chronic conditions. It seems to be important to provide cross-cultural evidence on its properties in non-English healthcare contexts. The present study assessed the psychometric properties of the heiQ in Italian adults with chronic conditions. METHODS: Two hundred ninety-nine individuals with a chronic condition (mean age = 61.4 years, 50.16% females) completed the heiQ and the Medical Outcomes Study-Short Form (SF-36). Confirmatory factor analyses, Composite Reliability Indices, and bivariate correlations were performed. RESULTS: Structural validity based on 8 correlated factors with good fit was in line with previous research. Concurrent validity was confirmed, as shown by moderate associations between the scores on the Constructive attitudes and approaches, Self-monitoring and insight, Health directed activities, Social integration and support, and Emotional distress subscales and the scores on SF-36 Physical functioning, General health perceptions, Vitality, Social functioning, Perceived mental health and Role limitations due to physical and emotional problems subscales. CONCLUSIONS: The Italian heiQ has strong properties and it can be used routinely also in the Italian healthcare services.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Digital communication technologies can overcome physical, social and psychological barriers in building romantic relationships. Online romance scams are a modern form of fraud that has spread in Western societies along with the development of social media and dating apps. Through a fictitious Internet profile, the scammer develops a romantic relationship with the victim for 6-8 months, building a deep emotional bond to extort economic resources in a manipulative dynamic. There are two notable features: on the one hand, the double trauma of losing money and a relationship, on the other, the victim's shame upon discovery of the scam, an aspect that might lead to underestimation of the number of cases. OBJECTIVES: This paper presents a scoping review of the quantitative and qualitative evidence on this issue, focusing on epidemiological aspects, relational dynamics, and the psychological characteristics of victims and scammers. METHODS: A literature scoping review was conducted using electronic databases and descriptors. Studies were included if they had analyzed the phenomenon in any population or the relationship dynamics characterizing it through whatsoever typology of design. Scoping reviews are a form of knowledge synthesis, which incorporates a range of study designs and wide eligibility criteria to comprehensively summarize evidence with the aim of informing practice, programs, and policy and providing direction to future research priorities. RESULTS: Twelve studies were included. Sixty-three percent of social media users and 3% of the general population report having been a victim at least once. Some psychological variables appear to be associated with the risk of being scammed, such as female gender, middle-age, higher levels of neuroticism, tendencies to the romantic idealization of affective relations, sensation seeking, impulsiveness and susceptibility to addiction. We analyse literature limitations and future directions. CONCLUSION: Since this emerging phenomenon is still largely unrecognized, understanding the psychological characteristics of victims and scammers will allow at-risk personality profiles to be identified and prevention/intervention strategies to be developed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Parental incarceration can produce serious effects on the offspring's mental health. The presence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in prisoners' offspring is understudied and the few literature data showed heterogeneous evidence, with some studies suggesting that about 25% of prisoners' offspring have PTSD and other reporting much lower prevalence rates around 2-3%. There is no systematic review and meta-analysis about PTSD in prisoners' offspring. OBJECTIVES: The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide a first quantitative synthesis of the prevalence of the PTSD diagnosis in prisoners' offspring. Moderator variables of the effect sizes were assessed, including offspring's and parents' gender, offspring's generational cohort (children/adolescents versus adults), reasons for parental incarceration (political/war versus crime), and country type (Western versus Non-Western countries). METHODS: A systematic review and a meta-analysis were conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. Studies were included if they assessed the presence of a PTSD diagnosis in child, adolescent or adult offspring of prisoners through a diagnostic classification system, a clinician-administered interview or a self-report questionnaire, if they reported data necessary to calculate the effect sizes or the authors were available to provide them. Studies might have been based upon any design except review, single-case, case series, and case reports. Outcomes might have been measured at any time after parental incarceration. Parental imprisonment was defined as any kind of custodial confinement of a parent by the criminal justice system, including being held as a prisoner of war or for political reasons.Independent reviewers searched published/unpublished studies through electronic databases and additional sources and extracted the data. A random-effect meta-analysis was carried out by calculating the effect sizes as event rates. Heterogeneity was examined by the I2 and the Q statistics. Moderators were assessed through meta-regressions. RESULTS: Six studies (2512 participants) were included. Fifteen percent of prisoners' offspring had PTSD, as shown by a significant mean effect size of 0.14 without evidence of publication bias (95% CI: 0.081 - 0.249, p< 0.001). There were no significant differences on the mean effect sizes between the studies on adults and those on children/adolescents [Q(1) = 0.00, p = .999], between the studies on parents incarcerated for political/war reasons and those for crime [Q(1) = 0.00, p = .979], and between the studies conducted in Western and non-Western countries [Q(1) = 0.854, p = .355]. While offspring's gender was not related to the effect sizes [ß = -0.01, 95% CI: -0.02 - 0.02, p = .452], parents' gender was significantly and positively associated with the effect sizes suggesting that in studies with higher percentages of incarcerated mothers, the prevalence of offspring's PTSD was higher [ß = 0.01, 95% CI: 0.0 - 0.01, p = .019]. CONCLUSION: PTSD is a serious mental health condition among prisoners' offspring, particularly when mothers are incarcerated. The present findings point out the importance of thorough assessment and timely intervention/prevention strategies implemented by professionals of mental health settings and detention systems. The cross-sectional design of the studies does not allow causal conclusions to be drawn about the effect of parental incarceration as a risk factor for PTSD. Other variables related to parental incarceration may explain these findings. This limitation points out the importance of further longitudinal research.

RESUMO

No study investigated whether the presence of specific medical comorbidities is associated with the type of traumatic event, in particular with terrorist attack (TA). In a group of subjects with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the current study investigated the association between the types of traumatic event (TA vs. other traumatic event [OTE]) and medical comorbidities, controlling for sex and PTSD duration. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale, and the Davidson Trauma Scale were administered to 84 subjects diagnosed with PTSD. Thirty-nine were victims of TA and 45 victims of OTE. TA was associated with higher prevalence of neoplasms (ß = 2.60, p = 0.02). Females were more protected than males from circulatory system comorbidities (ß = 1.47, p = 0.04), while PTSD duration was associated with higher prevalence of such comorbidities (ß = 0.005, p = 0.01). Females showed a higher prevalence of neoplasms than males (ß = 2.50, p = 0.02). Female sex was protective against metabolic syndrome (ß = -1.79, p = 0.02). Patients with PTSD due to TA and female patients should be considered for their higher prevalence of neoplasms, while male patients and those with higher symptom duration should be monitored for circulatory disease and metabolic syndrome. Symptom duration might be associated with circulatory and metabolic disease. Implications for tailored and timely psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic intervention for PTSD are discussed focusing on these specific medical comorbidities.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the long-term efficacy and safety of polydimethylsiloxane injection (Macroplastique® , Cogentix Medical, Orangeburg, New York, USA) for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI), with a minimum follow-up of 3 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is an observational analytical prospective cohort study conducted in a single uro-gynaecological unit. All consecutive women with urodynamically confirmed pure SUI treated with the Macroplastique procedure, were included. Data regarding patient outcomes (International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form, Patient Global Impression of Improvement, and patient satisfaction scores), objective cure rates, and adverse events were collected during follow-up. Uni- and multivariable analyses were performed to investigate outcomes. Multiple logistic regression was performed to identify factors involved in the risk of failure of the procedures or recurrence of SUI. RESULTS: In all, 85 women had the Macroplastique procedure. At the 3-year follow-up, all 85 (100%) patients were available for the evaluation. We did not find any significant change in the surgical outcomes during this time. At 3 years after surgery, 42 of 85 patients (49%) declared themselves cured (P = 0.67). Similarly, at the 3-year evaluation, 40 of 85 patients (47%) were objectively cured. There was no significant deterioration of objective cure rates over time (P = 0.3). A history of radical pelvic surgery and a low surgeon's skill were significantly associated with the risk of failure of Macroplastique. The multivariate analysis confirmed these findings; a previous history of radical pelvic surgery and a low surgeon's skill independently predicted the subjective and objective failure of Macroplastique. CONCLUSIONS: The 3-year results of this study showed that Macroplastique could be an acceptable alternative for the treatment of SUI with stable results over time and a negligible complication rate.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Overactive bladder (OAB) can frequently exert a negative effect on female sexual function. Mirabegron, a ß3 receptor agonist, improves OAB symptoms, but there are very few information about its role on female sexual dysfunction (FSD). Aim of the study was to assess the impact of Mirabegron on FSD in women affected by OAB. METHODS: Fifty sexually active women suffering from idiopathic OAB were included in the study. Patients were assessed by means of a urogynecologic physical examination and were asked to complete the 3-day voiding diary, the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire- Short Form (ICIQ-SF), the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire and VAS, before and 12 weeks after treatment with Mirabegron. In addition, at the same time points, patients underwent uroflowmetry with the measurement of post- void residual volume (PVR). RESULTS: At baseline all patients were affected by OAB symptoms, with 49/50 patients (98%) presenting with FSD. At 12- weeks follow- up, OAB symptoms improved significantly in all patients, with 59.5% of subjects achieving a complete urinary continence. FSFI Total Score significantly improved in 42/50 patients (84%) from 18.9 ± 4.3 to 21.8 ± 4.5 (p < 0.0001). Sixteen cases (32%) presented with no FSD. Also mean ± SD scores of ICIQ-SF and VAS significantly improved (from 17.1 ± 5 to 7.9 ± 4.8 and from 3.9 ± 1.2 to 6.9 ± 1.2 respectively, p < 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Mirabegron not only is able to control urinary symptoms in women with OAB, but also induces a significant improvement in their sexual life.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Physical Health Status is a neglected outcome in clinical practice with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and a systematic review is lacking. OBJECTIVE: The current study presents the first systematic review and meta-analysis summarizing the evidence on (a) perceived Physical Health Status, Bodily Pain and Role Limitations due to Physical Problems in patients with OCD compared with controls, (b) age, gender, severity of OCD symptoms, study publication date, study methodological quality as moderators of perceived Physical Health Status. METHODS: Case-control studies were included if they (a) compared OCD patients with healthy/general population participants as controls, and (b) used validated self-report instruments. Two reviewers searched electronic databases, contacted corresponding authors, and examined reference lists/conference proceedings/theses. RESULTS: Fourteen studies were included. A large significant negative effect size without publication bias showed that controls reported higher perceived Physical Health Status than patients with OCD. Medium and small effect sizes favouring controls emerged for Role Limitations due to Physical Problems and Bodily Pain, respectively. Higher age, females percentage, and publication date were associated with larger effect sizes; higher OCD severity and methodological quality were associated with smaller effect sizes. CONCLUSION: Perceived Physical Health should be evaluated and addressed by clinicians during treatment, particularly with older, female and less severe patients. Lifestyle interventions might be implemented.

RESUMO

In the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) literature, no study assessed differences in symptom clusters among victims of terrorist attacks (TA) as compared with victims of other traumatic events. Due to the intentional nature of the harm infliction, TA may be expected to produce more severe symptoms, particularly avoidance, since this cluster was found to be a severity marker and a maintenance factor of the disorder. As several patients delay treatment-seeking, duration of untreated illness (DUI) is another problem potentially influencing PTSD severity. The current study explored differences in PTSD symptom clusters as a function of the traumatic event type (TA compared with other events), DUI, and sex. One hundred-eight patients with primary PTSD were administered The Clinician Administered PTSD Scale. Mean DUI was approximately 12 years, irrespective of the event type. Patients who had experienced TA had significantly more severe Avoidance/Numbing symptoms and general PTSD severity than those who had experienced other events. No significant effects emerged for DUI and sex on all clusters. Timely recognition and intervention on PTSD may include community psychoeducation programs about its symptoms. Tailored intervention on TA-related PTSD may focus on Avoidance/Numbing by including medication and psychotherapeutic approaches for this symptom cluster.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of retropubic tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) 17 years after implantation for the treatment of female pure stress urinary incontinence (SUI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in two urogynaecological units in two countries. All consecutive women with urodynamically proven pure SUI treated by TVT were included. Patients with mixed incontinence and/or anatomical evidence of pelvic organ prolapse were excluded. Data regarding subjective outcomes (International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form, Patient Global Impression of Improvement, and patient satisfaction scores), objective cure (stress test) rates, and adverse events were collected during follow-up. Univariable analysis was performed to investigate outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 52 women underwent TVT implantation. At 17-year follow-up, 46 women (88.4%) were available for the evaluation. We did not find any significant change in surgical outcomes during this time. At 17 years after surgery, 41 of 46 women (89.1%) declared themselves cured (P = 0.98). Similarly, at 17-year evaluation, 42 of 46 women (91.4%) were objectively cured. No significant deterioration in objective cure rates was observed over time (P for trend 0.50). The univariate analysis did not find any risk factor statistically associated with the recurrence of SUI. Of the 46 women, 15 (32.6%) reported the onset of de novo overactive bladder at 17-year follow-up. No other late complications were reported. CONCLUSIONS: The 17-year results of this study showed that TVT is a highly effective and safe option for the treatment of SUI.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The sense of dignity is a multifactorial feeling influenced also by the healthcare context. PDI-IT is a tool that measures this construct, but its psychometric characteristics have not been adequately investigated in patients which are not experiencing and End- Of-Life condition. The aim of this study is to examine the psychometric characteristics of PDI-IT in a group of non-terminal chronic patients and to verify the instrument's invariance with respect to the individual characteristics of patients. METHODS: A multicentric study was conducted on 421 patients undergoing ambulatory care or hospitalized in specialized medical, surgical and oncological areas. The study of the PDIIT validity in this population was achieved by structural equation (SEM) models; reliability was assessed by Cronbach's Alpha, whereas invariance was studied through multigroup analysis. RESULTS: Findings show an excellent reliability and confirm the monodimensionality of the theoretical structure. After the model optimization interventions, fit indices point out a good data fitting on the reference model. The instrument is invariant with respect to individual characteristics (sex and age) but does not appear to be appropriate for all chronic patients. DISCUSSION: Although with some cautions about the state of progression of the disease, PDIIT seems to be a valid and reliable tool, useful in measuring the sense of dignity even in populations of chronic patients. Future research should address the development of a short form of the tool.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, the number of patients supported by informal caregivers has substantially increased. In the Italian healthcare context, informal caregivers' experience of care is a new under-recognized construct, and no assessment tool is available. Measuring caregivers' experience is important since in Italy the relationship between doctors and patients/relatives is still considered asymmetrical. The current study presented development and initial psychometric properties of the Health Services and Caregiver Experience questionnaire (HSCE), a self-report tool of caregivers' global experience for inpatient clinical care, including factor structure, reliability and its relations with measures of coping strategies and family strain. METHODS: The HSCE was administered to a total of 503 informal caregivers of inpatients admitted at an Italian University Hospital (mean age = 48.08 years, SD = 14.82, females = 61.40%). Family Strain Questionnaire-Short Form (FSQ-SF) and Coping Orientations to Problems Experience-New Italian Version (COPE-NVI) were administered to a subgroup of participants. First-grade relatives were 73.10%, whereas 13.20% were second-grade relatives and 13.70% were home-watch caregivers. RESULTS: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses showed a structure with a single factor, which explained 64.80% of the total variance. All the items had salient loadings. In the two subsamples, HSCE had excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.95-0.97). Positive moderate correlations were found between HSCE and FSQ-SF scores (r = 0.45, p < .05), between HSCE and COPE-NVI scale scores, including COPE-NVI positive attitude and COPE-NVI problem solving scores (rs' range = 0.51-0.57, p < .05). Moreover, a positive large correlation between HSCE and COPE-NVI social support scores emerged (r = 0.72, p < .05). Correlations were not significant between HSCE scores and COPE-NVI turning to religion and avoidance strategies. CONCLUSIONS: The HSCE resulted to have good psychometric properties. Better caregivers' experience correlated with stronger family strain but also with better problem solving and social support. The study expanded knowledge on caregiver's experience in Italy and indicated that HSCE is a valid and reliable tool to measure this under-recognized construct in Italy.

RESUMO

The issue of the assessment of work-related stress has stimulated in recent years, the production of several theoretical paradigms and assessment tools. In this paper we present a new scale for the assessment of organizational well-being and work-related stress specific for healthcare organizations (Work-related Stress Assessment Scale - WSAS). The goal of the authors is to examine the psychometric properties of the scale, so that it can be used in the healthcare setting as a work-related stress assessment tool. The answers of 230 healthcare professionals belonging to different roles have been analyzed. The study was realized in 16 Units of the University Hospital "S. Maria alle Scotte "of Siena. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed the presence of five factors with good internal consistency and reliability, "relationship to the structure of proximity" (α = 0.93) "change" (α = 0.92), "organization of work "(α = 0.81)," relationship with the company / Governance "(α = 0.87)" working environment "(α = 0.83). The analysis of SEM (Structural Equation Models) has confirmed the goodness of the factor solution (NNFI = 0.835, CFI = 0.921, RMSEA = 0.060). The good psychometric qualities, the shortness and simplicity of the scale WSAS makes it a useful aid in the assessment of work-related stress in health care organizations.

RESUMO

Violent situations are unfortunately very frequent in women and children all over the world. These experiences have long-term consequences for adult physical and psychological health. One of the most reported is chronic pain, defined in various sub-diagnoses and present in all types of violence. Unfortunately, the etiology of this condition is not clear and neither are the predisposing factors. The aim of this scoping review is to examine the literature trends about the probable risk factors of chronic pain in violence victims. Considering a bio-psycho-social model, it is possible to hypothesize the presence of all these aspects. The results will be discussed in the present article.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is significantly affected, regardless of the stage of the disease, as regards the physical, psychological and social functioning dimension. Big-Five personality traits can affect patients' HRQoL and willingness to take treatment options. Illness denial consists of denial of negative emotions, resistance to change and conscious avoidance. Poorer HRQoL can predict a higher risk of hospitalization and mortality, and broadly a worse adjustment to the dialytic therapy. Thus, a clearer knowledge of the psychological variables associated with a worse HRQoL in the predialysis stage might improve the intervention planning. No study investigated illness denial and personality traits simultaneously. We investigated the role of illness denial and Big-Five personality traits in the domains of HRQoL in predialysis patients with CKD. METHODS: One hundred adults (mean age: 75.87 years) with CKD participated. The Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short form, the Italian version of Ten Item Personality Inventory Revised, the Illness Denial Questionnaire, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form-Y were administered. RESULTS: Illness denial was associated with increased HRQoL related to symptoms/problems, effect and burden of CKD and cognitive functions domains, and it was a predictor of higher HRQoL in the last three domains mentioned above. Extraversion was related to better work status and sexual function; agreeableness was linked to elevated cognitive function, quality of social interaction and sexual function; conscientiousness was related to better sexual function; neuroticism was linked to improved cognitive and sexual functions; in the end, openness to experience was related to fewer symptoms and problems. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study which simultaneously assessed Big-Five personality traits and illness denial in different domains of HRQoL of CKD patients. Personalised psychological interventions aimed at improving HRQoL in this population might focus on specific illness denial processes and personality traits.

RESUMO

Mobile health platforms have shown promise in the management of various mental health conditions (including stress, anxiety, and depression) and cognitive behavioral strategies emerged as a popular and effective option offered by the platforms. This paper presents the protocol of a study aimed to test the effectiveness of a mobile platform that uses cognitive-behavioral strategies for stress self-management in the Tuscany region (Italy). The mobile app is adapted to the specific needs of each vulnerable population for which it is designed: young and older people, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs. The app will be evaluated on the following outcomes: (i) perceived susceptibility and severity of the pandemic situation, perceived benefits, and costs of preventive health behaviors, (ii) knowledge about Covid-19 preventive behaviors and negative consequences of social distancing, (iii) stress and psychopathological symptoms (i.e., anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress symptoms) and cognitive distortions. If successful, we expect that the platform could give various groups clinical benefits by providing symptom self-monitoring and early intervention, consolidating the number of mental health programs available, and decreasing barriers to treatment-seeking. This population-level approach has the potential to improve mental health outcomes in pandemic periods for many people.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: After the declaration of the pandemic status in several countries, the continuity of face-to-face visits in psychiatric facilities has been delayed or even interrupted to reduce viral spread. Little is known about the personality factors associated with medication beliefs and adherence amongst individuals with mental illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. This brief report describes a preliminary naturalistic longitudinal study that explored whether the Big Five personality traits prospectively moderate the effects of medication beliefs on changes in adherence during the pandemic for a group of outpatients with psychosis or bipolar disorder. METHODS: Thirteen outpatients undergoing routine face-to-face follow-up assessments during the pandemic were included (41 observations overall) and completed the Revised Italian Version of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory, the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire, the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8-item and the Beck Depression Inventory-II. RESULTS: Participants had stronger concerns about their psychiatric medications rather than beliefs about their necessity, and adherence to medications was generally low. Participants who had more necessity beliefs than concerns had better adherence to medications. People scoring higher in Conscientiousness and Neuroticism traits and more concerned about the medication side effects had poorer adherence. CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary data suggest the importance of a careful assessment of the adherence to medications amongst people with psychosis/bipolar disorder during the pandemic. Interventions aimed to improve adherence might focus on patients' medication beliefs and their Conscientiousness and Neuroticism personality traits.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: After a diagnosis of infertility, an increasing number of couples turns to the Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR) to achieve a pregnancy. A diagnosis of infertility has a negative impact on the individual's well-being and it can increase the risk of anxious-depressive symptoms, stress, and low self-esteem. Data associated with infertility-related Quality of Life (QoL) are lacking in men. Little is known about men's experience of infertility and its treatments during the pandemic. Among the variables potentially associated with infertility-related QoL, the role of obsessive beliefs is neglected, although preliminary studies considered perfectionistic traits. METHOD: One hundred and fifty-one participants were included. Eighty men (mean age: 40.83 years) were attending a MAR pathway. Of these, 50 men (67.5%) were undergoing homologous MAR and 30 men (37.5%) were undergoing heterologous MAR. A control group consisting of 71 subjects (mean age: 36.69 years), paired by age, marital status, and number of children, was drawn from the general population. The Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire-46, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-20, and the Fertility Quality of Life Questionnaire were administered. RESULTS: High levels of anxiety, depression and stress were moderately associated with lower infertility-related Quality of Life. For men undergoing homologous MAR, perfectionism beliefs represented a vulnerability factor for a lower fertility-related QoL, while for men undergoing heterologous MAR, high thought control beliefs represented a risk factor for a lower fertility-related QoL. CONCLUSIONS: A focus on the obsessive beliefs should be included in the psychological treatment of infertile men, specifically perfectionism in homologous MAR and control of thoughts in heterologous MAR. Therefore, psychological assessment and support interventions should be personalized according to the MAR pathway and be focused on men's cognitive features in order to improve their QoL during the MAR pathway.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) includes different symptoms: re-experiencing, avoidance of reminders and numbing, and hyperarousal. Although questionnaires are widely used, clinician-administered interviews provide a more comprehensive exploration of symptoms. Few studies examined the convergence between clinician-rated and patient-reported general severity and symptoms, with mixed findings. We explored the association between clinician-rated and patient-reported general severity and symptoms and the moderator role of gender in PTSD patients referred to a specialized outpatient service. DESIGN AND METHODS: The Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale and Davidson Trauma Scale were administered to 56 patients. FINDINGS: Patients classified by clinicians as with higher avoidance/numbing symptoms and women classified with higher hyperarousal symptoms reported higher general severity. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The assessment of the patients reporting high severity should focus on hyperarousal, particularly for women.
