RESUMO

In this work, a functional covalent gel material is developed to resolve the severe dendritic growth and hydrogen evolution reaction toward Zn/electrolyte interface in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). A covalent gel layer with superior durability forms homogeneously on the surface of Zn foil. The covalent gel with triazole functional groups can uniformize the transport of Zn2+ due to the interactions between Zn2+ ions and the triazole groups in the covalent gel. As a consequence, the symmetrical battery with triazole covalent gel maintains stable Zn plating/stripping for over 3000 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2 , and the full cell combined with a V2 O5 cathode operates steadily and continuously for at least 1800 cycles at 5 A g-1 with a capacity retention rate of 67.0%. This work provides a train of thought to develop stable covalent gels for the protection of zinc anode toward high-performance ZIBs.

Aqueous zinc metal batteries (ZMBs) are a promising sustainable technology for large-scale energy storage applications. However, the water is often associated with problematic parasitic reactions on both anode and cathode, leading to the low durability and reliability of ZMBs. Here, a multifunctional separator for the Zn-V2 O5 batteries by growing the coordination supramolecular network (CSN:Zn-MBA, MBA = 2-mercaptobenzoic acid) on the conventional non-woven fabrics (NWF) is developed. CSN tends to form a stronger coordination bond as a softer cation, enabling a thermodynamically preferred Zn2+ to VO2 + substitution in the network, leading to the formation of VO2 -MBA interface, that strongly obstructs the VO2 (OH)2 - penetration but simultaneously allows Zn2+ transfer. Moreover, Zn-MBA molecules can adsorb the OTF- and distribute the interfacial Zn2+ homogeneous, which facilitate a dendrite-free Zn deposition. The Zn-V2 O5 cells with Zn-MBA@NWF separator realize high capacity of 567 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 , and excellent cyclability over 2000 cycles with capacity retention of 82.2% at 5 A g-1 . This work combines the original advantages of the template and new function of metals via cation metathesis within a CSN, provides a new strategy for inhibiting vanadium oxide dissolution.

Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) contains rich bioactive ingredients and secondary metabolites; hence, it has been used as medicine and food product. This study systematically quantified the nutrient contents, the total content of phenolic acids (TPC), flavonoids (TFC), and triterpenoids (TTC) in seven different cultivars of bitter gourd. This study also estimated the organic acid content and antioxidative capacity of different cultivars of bitter gourd. Although the TPC, TFC, TTC, organic acid content, and antioxidative activity differed significantly among different cultivars of bitter gourd, significant correlations were also observed in the obtained data. In the metabolomics analysis, 370 secondary metabolites were identified in seven cultivars of bitter gourd; flavonoids and phenolic acids were significantly more. Differentially accumulated metabolites identified in this study were mainly associated with secondary metabolic pathways, including pathways of flavonoid, flavonol, isoflavonoid, flavone, folate, and phenylpropanoid biosyntheses. A number of metabolites (n = 27) were significantly correlated (positive or negative) with antioxidative capacity (r ≥ 0.7 and p < 0.05). The outcomes suggest that bitter gourd contains a plethora of bioactive compounds; hence, bitter gourd may potentially be applied in developing novel molecules of medicinal importance.

Grafting is widely used to enhance the phenotypic traits of tomatoes, alleviate biotic and abiotic stresses, and control soil-borne diseases of the scion in greenhouse production. There are many factors that affect the healing and acclimatization stages of seedlings after grafting. However, the role of light has rarely been studied. In this study, we compared the effects of artificial light and traditional shading (under shaded plastic-covered tunnels) on the recovery of grafted tomato seedlings. The results show that the grafted tomato seedlings recovered using artificial light had a higher healthy index, leaf chlorophyll content, shoot dry weight, and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and water use efficiency (WUE) compared with grafted seedling recovered using the traditional shading method. Transcriptome analysis showed that the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of grafted seedlings restored using artificial light were mainly enriched in the pathways corresponding to plant hormone signal transduction. In addition, we measured the endogenous hormone content of grafted tomato seedlings. The results show that the contents of salicylic acid (SA) and kinetin (Kin) were significantly increased, and the contents of indoleacetic acid (IAA) and jasmonic acid (JA) were decreased in artificial-light-restored grafted tomato seedlings compared with those under shading treatments. Therefore, we suggest that artificial light affects the morphogenesis and photosynthetic efficiency of grafted tomato seedlings, and it can improve the performance of tomato seedlings during grafting recovery by regulating endogenous hormone levels.

BACKGROUND: Severe renal dysfunction is common among liver transplant (LT) candidates and often prompts simultaneous liver-kidney transplantation (SLKT) consideration. In view of 2017 United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) criteria for SLKT, we investigated the likelihood and predictors of renal recovery among patients who met the aforementioned criteria yet received liver transplant alone (LTA). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed relative renal recovery (RRR; increase in eGFR to >30 ml/min) in adult LTA recipients between 1/2009 and 1/2019. RESULTS: Of 1165 LT recipients, 54 met 2017 UNOS criteria, with 37 receiving LTA. RRR occurred in 84% of LTA recipients, none of whom had pre-LT eGFR <20 ml/min. Sustained RRR (>180 days) occurred in 43% of patients. While prolonged pre-LT severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 ml/min) predicted failure to have sustained RRR (HR .19 per 90-day, CI .04-.87, p < .005), having an eGFR measurement of >30 ml/min within 90 days pre-LT (HR 5.52, CI 1.23-24.79, p .01) associated with achieving sustained RRR. Sustained RRR was protective against the composite outcome of renal replacement therapy, kidney transplant, and death (HR .21, p .01). CONCLUSION: LT candidates who meet 2017 UNOS criteria for SLKT yet undergo LTA can still have relative renal recovery post-LT, exceeding 80% on short-term follow-up and 40% on long-term follow-up. eGFR trends within 90 days pre-LT can predict sustained renal recovery, which appears protective of adverse outcomes. These recovery rates advocate for applying the more restrictive criteria for SLKT outlined in this article and increasing utilization of the safety net (SN) policy for those who do not meet the proposed criteria.

BACKGROUND: At present, many indicators reflect the clinical disease activity of ulcerative colitis (UC). However, commonly used inflammatory markers do not show good utility for indicating endoscopic disease activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR), inflammatory markers, and complete blood count (CBC) related parameters in patients with UC as simple, non-invasive, and independent markers of endoscopic activity (EA). METHODS: We retrospectively collected extensive data from the hospital medical records of 386 patients who presented with UC to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University (Urumqi, China) from 2018 to 2022 January. The Mayo endoscopic score (MES) was used to evaluate endoscopic disease activity. All included patients were defined as the MES-All group; those with extensive colitis (E3) were defined as the MES-E3 group. Demographics, laboratory parameters, endoscopic results, the extent of disease, and drug history were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: For patients in the MES-All or MES-E3 group, hs-CRP, CAR, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were significantly higher in EA UC patients than in those with mucosal healing. The mean platelet volume (MPV) and lymphocyte to monocyte ratio were significantly lower in active disease than in the patient's remission (p < 0.001). ROC analysis showed that in the MES-All and MES-E3 groups, the cutoff values of hs-CRP activity under endoscopy were 5.32 mg/L (AUC 0.850, sensitivity 77.6%, specificity 81.9%) and 5.16 mg/L (AUC 0.902, sensitivity 86.9%, specificity 85.4%) respectively, and the cutoff values of CAR were 0.14 (AUC 0.853, sensitivity 76.8%, specificity 84.8%) and 0.18 (AUC 0.904, sensitivity 81.8%, specificity 89.6%) respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that hs-CRP, CAR, NLR, and PLR identified UC EA, while decreased MPV reflected inflammatory activity in the UC mucosa. CONCLUSION: Especially in patients with extensive colitis, hs-CRP and CAR are closely related to EA and show a higher diagnostic value compared to the related CBC parameters. The aforementioned indicators are simple and non-invasive independent markers that reflect the EA in UC.

Micro-LED display is considered to be the most promising display technology, and naked-eye 3D display represents the most advanced frontier of display. Naked-eye 3D micro-LED display has both the advantages of micro-LED display and the characteristics of naked-eye 3D display. Only conceptual solutions for 3D micro-LED display have been reported so far. The effect of luminescence distribution and the direction of micro-LED devices on crosstalk in the naked-eye 3D display is not clear. In this paper, we first investigated the chip-shaping effect on the emission characteristics, mainly the luminescence distribution and direction of the micro-LED, and then we investigated the influence of luminescence distribution and direction of micro-LED on the pixel crosstalk in naked-eye micro-LEDs 3D display. Our work should advance the micro-LED display, especially the micro-LED 3D display.

Vanishing bile duct syndrome is an acquired destruction of interlobular bile ducts. This type of drug-induced liver injury has been associated with other medications and requires practitioners' awareness of potential hepatotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is the predominant form of chronic liver disease worldwide. This study was designed to investigate the proportion and characteristics of MAFLD within the general Chinese population and to identify the contributory risk factors for liver fibrosis among MAFLD individuals. METHODS: The participants were recruited from a cohort undergoing routine health evaluations at the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University between May 2019 and March 2023. The diagnosis of MAFLD was based on the established clinical practice guidelines. The fibrosis-4 index score (FIB-4) was employed to evaluate hepatic fibrosis, with a FIB-4 score of ≥1.3 indicating significant fibrosis. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to determine risk factors associated with significant hepatic fibrosis in MAFLD. RESULTS: A total of 22,970 participants who underwent comprehensive medical examinations were included in the analysis. The overall proportion of MAFLD was 28.77% (6608/22,970), with 16.87% (1115/6608) of these patients showing significant fibrosis as assessed using FIB-4. Independent risk factors for significant liver fibrosis in MAFLD patients were male (odds ratio [OR] = 0.676, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.558-0.821), hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positivity (OR = 2.611, 95% CI: 1.557-4.379), body mass index ≥23.00 kg/m2 (OR = 0.632, 95% CI: 0.470-0.851), blood pressure ≥130/85 mmHg (OR = 1.885, 95% CI: 1.564-2.272), and plasma glucose ≥5.6 mmol/L (OR = 1.815, 95% CI: 1.507-2.186) (all P <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of MAFLD in an urban Chinese population is 28.77%. About 16.87% of MAFLD patients presented with significant liver fibrosis.

Diabetic wound treatment continues to be a significant clinical issue due to higher levels of oxidative stress, susceptibility to bacterial infections, and chronic inflammatory responses during healing. We rationally developed and synthesized an ultra-small carbon dots (C-dots) loaded with zinc single-atom nanozyme (Zn/C-dots) with the aim of promoting wounds healing by nanocatalytic treatment, especially targeting its complex pathological microenvironment. Zinc single atoms and C-dots form a dual catalytic system with higher enzymatic activity. Furthermore, the Zn/C-dots nanozyme effectively enters cells, accumulates at mitochondria, and removes excess ROS, protecting cells from oxidative stress damage and limiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, hence reducing inflammation. Zinc can synergistically increase the antibacterial action of C-dots (the effective antibacterial rate of 100 µg/mL Zn/C-dots was above 90 %). Unlike traditional C-dots, Zn/C-dots can cause endothelial cell migration and the formation of new blood vessels. In vitro cytotoxicity, blood compatibility, and in vivo toxicity studies of Zn/C-dots show that they are biocompatible. We subsequently utilized the Zn/C-dots nanozymes to treat diabetic rats' chronic wounds for external use, combining them with ROS-responsive hydrogels to create an antioxidative system (H-Zn/C-dots). The hydrogels anchored the Zn/C-dots nanozymes to the wound, allowing for long-term treatment. The results revealed that H-Zn/C-dots can considerably reduce inflammation, accelerate angiogenesis, collagen deposition, and promote tissue remodeling at the diabetic wound site. After 14 days, the wound area had decreased to approximately 9.19 %, making it a potential treatment. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: An ultra-small carbon dot with a zinc single-atom nanozyme was designed and manufactured. Zn/C-dots possess antibacterial, ROS-scavenging, and angiogenesis activities. In vivo, the multifunctional ROS-responsive hydrogel incorporating Zn/C-dots could speed up diabetic wound healing.

With the increasing number of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the improved recognition of nutritional therapy, research on low-potassium (LK) fruits and vegetables for CKD patients has gained global attention. Despite its already commercial availability primarily in Japan, public awareness remains limited, and cultivation methods lack a comprehensive strategy. This review offers an extensive examination of the developmental significance, current cultivation techniques, and existing limitations of functional LK fruits and vegetables with the objective of providing guidance and inspiration for their exploitation. Additionally, this review investigates various factors influencing K content, including varieties, temperature, light, exogenous substances, harvest time, and harvest parts, with a focus on optimizing production methods to enhance potassium utilization efficiency (KUE) and decrease the K content in plants. Finally, the review outlines the shortcomings and prospects of research on LK fruits and vegetables, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary research (in agriculture technology, medicine, and business) for patients with CKD and the future development of this field.

Dopamine is a small molecule inspired by the dopamine motif of mussel foot proteins, and PDA is formed by the self-polymerization of dopamine. Under the UV-irradiation,PDA would be oxidized by reactive oxygen species (ROS) which were produced by photocatalytic reactions on TiO2 surfaces,thus regulating the adhesion behavior of endothelial cells (ECs) TiO2 inhibited platelet (Plt) adhesion after UV exposure. Polydopamine (PDA)-TiO2 micropatterns (P-PDA-TiO2) were prepared by magnetron sputtering and photolithography. This micropatterns successfully achieves selective adhesion of Plt and ECs. The selective adhesion of ECs disappears after vacuum reduction. In contrast to conventional cell patterning strategies, P-PDA-TiO2 can easily achieve pattern separation of ECs and Plts and provide a new concept for building complex blood-contacting devices.

The decreased quality of leafy vegetables and tipburn caused by inappropriate light intensity are serious problems faced in plant factories, greatly reducing the economic benefits. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively understand the impact of light intensity on the growth and quality of different crops and to develop precise lighting schemes for specific cultivars. Two lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars-Crunchy and Deangelia-and one spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) cultivar-Shawen-were grown in a plant factory using a light-emitting diode (LED) under intensities of 300, 240, 180, and 120 µmol m-2 s-1, respectively. Cultivation in a solar greenhouse using only natural light (NL) served as the control. The plant height, number of leaves, and leaf width exhibited the highest values under a light intensity of 300 µmol m-2 s-1 for Crunchy. The plant width and leaf length of Deangelia exhibited the smallest values under a light intensity of 300 µmol m-2 s-1. The fresh weight of shoot and root, soluble sugar, soluble protein, and ascorbic acid contents in the three cultivars increased with the increasing light intensity. However, tipburn was observed in Crunchy under 300 µmol m-2 s-1 light intensity, and in Deangelia under both 300 and 240 µmol m-2 s-1 light intensities. Shawen spinach exhibited leaf curling under all four light intensities. The light intensities of 240 and 180 µmol m-2 s-1 were observed to be the most optimum for Crunchy and Deangelia (semi-heading lettuce variety), respectively, which would exhibit relative balance growth and morphogenesis. The lack of healthy leaves in Shawen spinach under all light intensities indicated the need to comprehensively optimize cultivation for Shawen in plant factories to achieve successful cultivation. The results indicated that light intensity is an important factor and should be optimized for specific crop species and cultivars to achieve healthy growth in plant factories.

As CO2 emissions increase and the global climate deteriorates, converting CO2 into valuable chemicals has become a topic of wide concern. The development of multifunctional catalysts for efficient CO2 conversion remains a major challenge. Herein, two porous organic polymers (NPOPs) functionalized with covalent triazine and triazole N-heterocycles are synthesized through the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. The NPOPs have an abundant microporous content and high specific surface area, which confer them excellent CO2 affinities with a CO2 adsorption capacity of 84.0 mg g-1 and 63.7 mg g-1, respectively, at 273 K and 0.1 MPa. After wet impregnation and in situ reductions, Ag nanoparticles were supported in the NPOPs to obtain Ag@NPOPs with high dispersion and small particle size. The Ag@NPOPs were applied to high-value conversion reactions of CO2 with propargylic amines and terminal alkynes under mild reaction conditions. The carboxylative cyclization transformation of propargylic amine into 2-oxazolidinone and the carboxylation transformation of terminal alkynes into phenylpropiolic acid had the highest TOF values of 1125.1 and 90.9 h-1, respectively. The Ag@NPOP-1 was recycled and used five times without any significant decrease in catalytic activity, showing excellent catalytic stability and durability.

Plants often suffer from hypoxic stress due to flooding caused by extreme weather. Hypoxia usually leads to restricted oxygen supply and alters metabolic patterns from aerobic to anaerobic. Cucumber roots are fragile and highly sensitive to damage from hypoxic stress. The purpose of this study was to investigate the regulatory mechanism of exogenous calcium alleviating hypoxic stress in cucumber through transcriptome and small RNAs analysis. Three treatments were performed in this paper, including untreated-control (CK), hypoxic stress (H), and hypoxic stress + exogenous calcium treatment (H + Ca2+). A large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, 1,463 DEGs between CK vs H, 3,399 DEGs between H vs H + Ca2+, and 5,072 DEGs between CK vs H + Ca2+, respectively. KEGG analysis of DEGs showed that exogenous calcium could activate hormone signaling pathways (ethylene, ABA, IAA and cytokinin), transcription factors (MYB, MYB-related, bHLH, bZIP, and WRKY), calcium signaling and glycolysis pathway to mitigating hypoxic stress in cucumber seedlings. Additionally, miRNA and their target genes were detected and predicted between treatments. The target genes of these miRNAs revealed that auxin, cellulose synthase, and mitochondrial ribosomal related genes (Csa2G315390, Csa6G141390, Csa4G053280, and Csa6G310480) probably play in the improvement of the hypoxic tolerance of cucumber seedlings through exogenous calcium application. In short, our data adds new information to the mechanism of exogenous calcium mitigation of hypoxic stress injury in cucumber seedlings at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels.

Replacing rockwool with more sustainable materials, such as coir, is an effective measure to improve the sustainability of soilless cultivation in the greenhouse. To comprehensively assess the feasibility of coir before using it widely, coir was compared to rockwool as a cucumber cultivation substrate to evaluate its performance on mineral elements in the substrates, drainage, and in the plants. Plant growth, amino acids, and flavor substances of cucumber fruits were also compared between the two substrates. Compared to rockwool, coir significantly increased the LAI and yield of cucumber crops as well as contents of Ca, Mg, S, Cl and Zn in leaves and fruits. Contents of P, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, Zn, and B in the substrate were higher for coir while those of Fe, Cu, and Mn in the drainage lower. Moreover, coir also significantly increased contents of amino acids (His, Leu, Ile, Phe, Lys, Asp, Glu and Pro) and flavor substance (TC, PS, TP, CLL, CuB, and LA) in cucumber fruits. Our results demonstrated the potential of coir as a replacement of rockwool to improve sustainability of soilless cultivation in the greenhouse.

With the development of the economy and society, more attention is being paid to energy costs and the potential environmental pollution caused by vegetable cultivation. The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of zero discharge of nutrient solutions on cucumber growth, leaf photosynthesis, and the yield and quality of cucumber under greenhouse conditions. The results show that zero discharge treatment did not change plant height, stem diameter, internode length, leaf area, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), transpiration rate (Tr), and leaf relative chlorophyll content on the most measurement days. Only Pn and relative chlorophyll content were significantly reduced after 16 days of treatment but soon recovered over time. Cucumber plants can adapt to treatment circumstances over the course of days. Leaf mineral element contents showed significant differences on some treatment days compared to the control, and trace elements of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Mo can be appropriately supplied during the treatment days. The cucumber yield and fruit quality in the zero discharge treatment did not change during the whole experimental period. This study confirmed that the irrigation method of a nutrient solution with zero discharge can be applied in cucumber cultivation practices. The strict management of irrigation strategy, plant growth, and greenhouse climate are very important for zero discharge cultivation. The cultivation method with zero discharge of nutrient solution can reduce the energy costs of disinfection, save water and fertilizers, and reduce the environmental pollution in cucumber cultivation.

Frequent earthquakes in strong earthquake areas pose a great threat to the safety operation of electric power facilities. There exists a pressing research need to develop an assessment method for the seismic risk of substations, i.e., the hubs of power system networks. In this study, based on Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA), Probabilistic Seismic Demand Model (PSDM) and reliability theory, a vulnerability model for a substation is obtained, based on considering the relationships between Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) and four seismic damage states (complete, extensive, moderate, and slight.) via a probabilistic approach. After an earthquake, the scope of influence and PGA distribution are evaluated using information recorded by the seismic observation stations, based on using interpolation or an empirical formula for the PGA attenuation. Therefore, the seismic risk can be evaluated by combining ground motion evaluation and the pre-built vulnerability model. The Wuqia- Kashgar area of Xinjiang was selected as the study area; it is an Earthquake-prone area, and one of the starting points for new energy transmission projects in China. Under a hypothetical earthquake (MS 7.9), the seismic risk of the substations was evaluated. The results show that: this method is able to give the probabilities of the four damage states of the substations, four substations close to the epicenter only have a probability of slight damage (45%-88%) and other substations are safer.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has a long history of application in blood contact materials, but it often suffers from insufficient anticoagulant properties. Recently, we have revealed the photocatalytic effect of TiO2 also induces anticoagulant properties. However, for long-term vascular implant devices such as vascular stents, besides anticoagulation, also anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperplastic properties, and the ability to support endothelial repair, are desired. To meet these requirements, here, we immobilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the surface of TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2-NTs) to obtain a composite material with enhanced photo-induced anticoagulant property and improvement of the other requested properties. The photo-functionalized TiO2-NTs showed protein-fouling resistance, causing the anticoagulant property and the ability to suppress cell adhesion. The immobilized AgNPs increased the photocatalytic activity of TiO2-NTs to enhances its photo-induced anticoagulant property. The AgNP density was optimized to endow the TiO2-NTs with anti-inflammatory property, a strong inhibitory effect on smooth muscle cells (SMCs), and low toxicity to endothelial cells (ECs). The in vivo test indicated that the photofunctionalized composite material achieved outstanding biocompatibility in vasculature via the synergy of photo-functionalized TiO2-NTs and the multifunctional AgNPs, and therefore has enormous potential in the field of cardiovascular implant devices. Our research could be a useful reference for further designing of multifunctional TiO2 materials with high vascular biocompatibility.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to describe interruptions in the pediatric ambulatory setting and to assess their impact on perceived physician communication, patient satisfaction and recall of provided physician instructions. METHODS: An observational study was performed at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Pediatric Gastroenterology clinic. Participation consisted of video recording the clinic visit and the caregiver completed post-visit surveys on communication and satisfaction. Video recordings were coded for interruptions, which were divided into 3 main categories: Visit Associated, Pediatric Associated, and Unanticipated. An interruption rate was calculated and correlated with the following outcome variables to assess the impact of interruptions: caregiver satisfaction, caregiver perception on the quality of physician communication, and caregiver instruction recall. RESULTS: There were 675 interruptions noted in the 81 clinic visits, with an average of 7.96 (σ = 7.68) interruptions per visit. Six visits had no interruptions. The Patient was the most frequent interrupter. Significantly higher interruption rates occurred in clinic visits with younger patients (<7 years old) with most of the interruptions being Pediatric Associated interruptions. There was minimal correlation between the clinic visit interruption rate and caregiver satisfaction with the communication, caregiver perception of quality of communication, or caregiver instruction recall rate. CONCLUSION: The effect of interruptions on the pediatric visit remains unclear. Interruptions may be part of the communication process to ensure alignment of the patient's agenda. Additional studies are needed to help determine the impact of interruptions and guide medical education on patient communication.
