RESUMO

Low-grade heat is ubiquitous in the environment and its thermoelectric conversion by the ionic conductors remains a challenge because of the low efficiency and poor sustainability. Here we demonstrate that the thermoelectric performances can be boosted by combining the Soret effect of protons and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction of benzoquinone and hydroquinone in hydrogels. An overall enhancement of thermopower (25.9 mV K-1 ), power factor (5 mW m-1 K-2 ), figure of merit (>2.4) and continuity of power output is achieved. Moreover, an energy-storage function can be achieved by the redox couple, and a retained power output of 27.7 %, or 14 mW m-2 for more than 3 hours is obtained by the re-balance of PCET reactants in the hydrogel after the removal of the temperature gradient.

Dielectric loss is an important way to eliminate electromagnetic pollution. In order to achieve high dielectric loss, a graphene film reduced graphene oxide-N doped graphene (rGO-NG) was constructed from graphene oxide-Ni@polydopamine (GO-Ni@PDA) via thein situsynthesis of hollow graphene spheres between graphene sheets. Thisin situwas achieved by means of electrostatic self-assembly and metal-catalyzed crystallization. Owing to the synergetic effect of multi-nanocavities and multi-defects, the prepared rGO-NG film shows an average shielding effectiveness (SE) of 50.0 dB in the range of 8.2-12.4 GHz with a thickness of 12.2µm, and the SE reflection is only 7.3 dB on average. It also exhibits an average dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) of 23.1, which is 26 and 105 times higher than those of rGO and rGO-Ni, respectively. This work provides a simple but effective route to develop high performance graphene-based materials for application as an electromagnetic interference shielding film in today's electronic devices.

Background and Purpose- The relationship between infarct dimensions and neurological progression in patients with acute pontine infarctions remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the morphometric predictive value of magnetic resonance imaging for early neurological deterioration (END) in acute pontine infarction. Methods- We included all patients admitted to our department having an acute ischemic stroke in the pons. The ventrodorsal length multiplied by thickness was measured as parameters of infarct size. END was defined as an incremental increase in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score by ≥1 point in motor power, or ≥2 points in the total score within the first week after admission. Results- We enrolled 407 patients, and 114 (28.0%) patients were diagnosed with END. Adjusted logistic regression analyses showed the maximum length multiplied by thickness was independently associated with END (odds ratio, 4.580 [95% CI, 2.909-7.210]). The sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve were 77.2%, 79.2%, and 0.843, respectively, in the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of maximum length multiplied by thickness for predicting END. Conclusions- These results suggest that the maximum length multiplied by thickness may be a possible predictor in the evaluation of progression with isolated acute pontine infarction. The extent of the pontine infarction along the conduction tract may contribute to deterioration.

Background: Wnt/ß-catenin signaling has been reported to exert cytoprotective effects in a cellular model of Parkinson's disease (PD). Glutamate excitotoxicity has been suggested to contribute to the pathogenesis of PD, and excitatory amino acid transporters (EAATs) play a predominant role in clearing excessive glutamate. EAAT2 is mainly expressed in astrocytes, which are an important source of Wnt signaling in the brain. Methods: Wnt1-overexpressing U251 astrocytes were indirectly cocultured with dopaminergic SH-SY5Y cells treated with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Cell toxicity was determined by cell viability and flow cytometric detection. Glutamate level in the culture medium was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Western blot analysis was used to detect the expression of Wnt1, ß-catenin, and EAAT2. Immunofluorescence was used to display the expression and translocation of NF-κB p65. Results: 6-OHDA treatment significantly decreased cell viability in both U251 cells and SH-SY5Y cells, inhibited the expression of Wnt1, ß-catenin, and EAAT2 in U251 cells, and increased the glutamate level in the culture medium. Coculture with Wnt1-overexpressing U251 cells attenuated 6-OHDA-induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y cells. Overexpression of Wnt1 decreased the glutamate level in the culture media, upregulated ß-catenin, EAAT2, and NF-κB levels, and promoted the translocation of NF-κB from the cytoplasm to the nucleus in U251 cells. Conclusion: Wnt1 promoted EAAT2 expression and mediated the cytoprotective effects of astrocytes on dopaminergic cells. NF-κB might be involved in the regulation of EAAT2 by Wnt1.

To further improve the cycle performance of gas turbines, a gas turbine cycle model based on interstage bleeding rotating detonation combustion was established using methane as fuel. Combined with a series of two-dimensional numerical simulations of a rotating detonation combustor (RDC) and calculations of cycle parameters, the pressure gain characteristics and cycle performance were investigated at different compressor pressure ratios in the study. The results showed that pressure gain characteristic of interstage bleeding RDC contributed to an obvious performance improvement in the rotating detonation gas turbine cycle compared with the conventional gas turbine cycle. The decrease of compressor pressure ratio had a positive influence on the performance improvement in the rotating detonation gas turbine cycle. With the decrease of compressor pressure ratio, the pressurization ratio of the RDC increased and finally made the power generation and cycle efficiency enhancement rates display uptrends. Under the calculated conditions, the pressurization ratios of RDC were all higher than 1.77, the decreases of turbine inlet total temperature were all more than 19 K, the power generation enhancements were all beyond 400 kW and the cycle efficiency enhancement rates were all greater than 6.72%.

BACKGROUND: Collaboration between humans and computers has become pervasive and ubiquitous, however current computer systems are limited in that they fail to address the emotional component. An accurate understanding of human emotions is necessary for these computers to trigger proper feedback. Among multiple emotional channels, physiological signals are synchronous with emotional responses; therefore, analyzing physiological changes is a recognized way to estimate human emotions. In this paper, a three-stage decision method is proposed to recognize four emotions based on physiological signals in the multi-subject context. Emotion detection is achieved by using a stage-divided strategy in which each stage deals with a fine-grained goal. METHODS: The decision method consists of three stages. During the training process, the initial stage transforms mixed training subjects to separate groups, thus eliminating the effect of individual differences. The second stage categorizes four emotions into two emotion pools in order to reduce recognition complexity. The third stage trains a classifier based on emotions in each emotion pool. During the testing process, a test case or test trial will be initially classified to a group followed by classification into an emotion pool in the second stage. An emotion will be assigned to the test trial in the final stage. In this paper we consider two different ways of allocating four emotions into two emotion pools. A comparative analysis is also carried out between the proposal and other methods. RESULTS: An average recognition accuracy of 77.57% was achieved on the recognition of four emotions with the best accuracy of 86.67% to recognize the positive and excited emotion. Using differing ways of allocating four emotions into two emotion pools, we found there is a difference in the effectiveness of a classifier on learning each emotion. When compared to other methods, the proposed method demonstrates a significant improvement in recognizing four emotions in the multi-subject context. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed three-stage decision method solves a crucial issue which is 'individual differences' in multi-subject emotion recognition and overcomes the suboptimal performance with respect to direct classification of multiple emotions. Our study supports the observation that the proposed method represents a promising methodology for recognizing multiple emotions in the multi-subject context.

BACKGROUND: The association between topographic patterns, risk factors and stroke mechanisms of ICAS in first-ever stroke remains unknown. METHODS: A large sample sized retrospective study was performed on first-ever ICAS ischemic stroke using DWI and MRA. RESULTS: Hypertension (60.92%), cigarette smoking (26.82%), MCA (76.65%) and multiple vessels (65.37%) stenosis, were the major factors favoring different mechanisms. Subcortical lesions were the most occurring topographic patterns (41.4%). The common mechanism was LBO (66.3%). Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between lesion patterns and mechanisms (r = 0.384, P = 0.001). Single mechanism had the higher apoB/apoAI ratio (P = 0.005) and levels of plasma apoB (P = 0.007) compared with multiple mechanisms. The anterior circulation stroke were more multiple mechanisms as compared to the posterior circulation stroke (P = 0.001). LBO was more prevalent in posterior circulation stroke than in anterior circulation stroke (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The topographic patterns of ischemic lesions is helpful in early identification of different mechanisms of ICAS. Monitoring apoB and apoB/apoA1 may help to predict the mechanism of stroke with ICAS. The prevalence of mechanisms differ between anterior and posterior circulation stroke with ICAS.

BACKGROUND: Acute brainstem syndrome (ABS) may herald multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica (NMO), or occur as an isolated syndrome. The aquaporin 4 (AQP4)-specific serum autoantibody, NMO-IgG, is a biomarker for NMO. However, the role of anti-AQP4 antibody in the conversion of ABS to NMO is unclear. METHODS: Thirty-one patients with first-event ABS were divided into two groups according to the presence of anti-AQP4 antibodies, their clinical features and outcomes were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Fourteen of 31 patients (45.16 %) were seropositive for NMO-IgG. The 71.43 % of anti-AQP4 (+) ABS patients converted to NMO, while only 11.76 % of anti-AQP4 (-) ABS patients progressed to NMO. Anti-AQP4 (+) ABS patients demonstrated a higher IgG index (0.68 ± 0.43 vs 0.42 ± 0.13, p < 0.01) and Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Scale (4.64 ± 0.93 vs 2.56 ± 0.81, p < 0.01) than anti-AQP4 (-) ABS patients. Area postrema clinical brainstem symptoms occurred more frequently in anti-AQP4 (+) ABS patients than those in anti-AQP4 (-) ABS patients (71.43 % vs 17.65 %, p = 0.004). In examination of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the 78.57 % of anti-AQP4 (+) ABS patients had medulla-predominant involvements in the sagittal view and dorsal-predominant involvements in the axial view. CONCLUSIONS: ABS represents an inaugural or limited form of NMO in a high proportion of anti-AQP4 (+) patients.

To investigate the temporal expressions of IL-9 and its related cytokines after middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats. IL-9 and its related cytokines in ischemia brain and blood were tested after rats were subjected to transient focal ischemia. Comparing with sham-operated group, the levels of IL-4, TGF-ß, PU.1, IRF4, OX40, NIK, RelB-p52 and IL-9 in experimental groups were significantly higher after middle cerebral artery occlusion. The results showed that expressions of IL-9 and its upstream stimulating factors increased in experimental stroke, and whether they play a role or just a secondary change is awaiting further research.

BACKGROUND: A number of reports have described the presence of tuberculosis (TB) in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) patients. However, a definite association between the two conditions has not been conclusively demonstrated. METHODS: To investigate the association between NMO and TB in a Chinese population, we performed a retrospective review of hospital records of NMO patients, control patients and tuberculosis meningitis (TBM) patients from January 1, 1995 to December 31, 2011. RESULTS: The frequency of preceding/simultaneous active pulmonary TB (PTB) was not significantly different between NMO patients (1.1%) and control groups (2.3% in myasthenia gravis, 1.1% in polymyositis or dermatomyositis, zero in idiopathic facial palsy and viral meningitis/meningoencephalitis). NMO cases differed from TBM cases in terms of demographics, course (recurrent or monophasic), cerebrospinal fluid analysis and magnetic resonance images. Two TBM patients shared partial clinical features with NMO (one of the TBM patients had a longitudinal extensive spinal cord lesion involving the holocord, and the other had optic neuritis before anti-tuberculosis treatment). NMO antibodies were only detected in NMO patients and not in TBM patients with myelitis or optic neuritis. CONCLUSIONS: We could not confirm previous suggestions of the association between PTB and NMO. Direct infection of the central nervous system by TB may mimic NMO in some respects, but whether NMO-like symptoms that develop during the course of TB should be considered and diagnosed as NMO is open to discussion.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) can coexist with non-organ-specific or organ-specific autoimmune diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the features between NMOSD without and with autoimmune diseases, and NMOSD with non-organ-specific and organ-specific autoimmune diseases. METHODS: One hundred and fifty five NMOSD patients without autoimmune diseases (n = 115) and with autoimmune diseases (n = 40) were enrolled. NMOSD with autoimmune diseases were divided by organ-specific autoimmune diseases. The clinical, laboratory and magnetic resonance imaging features between two groups were assessed. RESULTS: Motor deficit was less frequent in NMOSD patients with non-organ-specific autoimmune diseases (p = 0.024). Cerebrospinal fluid white blood cell and protein, serum C-reactive protein and immunoglobulin G were lower in NMOSD patients without autoimmune diseases, while several autoantibodies seropositivity and thyroid indexes were significantly higher in NMOSD patients with autoimmune diseases (p < 0.05). No difference was found in other clinical and laboratory characteristics between different NMOSD subtypes (p > 0.05). NMOSD patients with autoimmune diseases had higher brain abnormalities than NMOSD without autoimmune diseases (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The characteristics between NMOSD without and with autoimmune diseases were similar. NMOSD with autoimmune diseases have high frequency of brain abnormalities.

To enhance the sensitivity of flexible glucose sensors made with 3-aminophenylboronic acid and pyrrole as functional molecules and a carbon tri-electrode as substrate, graphene sponge (GS) and Prussian blue (PB) were used to enhance the charge transfer between the molecularly imprinted cavities and the electrodes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry showed that modifying the electrode with GS and PB significantly reduced the charge transfer impedance and increased the redox current of the sensor. The sensor has a sensitivity of up to 25.81 µA⋅loge (µM)-1⋅cm-2 for the detection of glucose using differential pulse voltammetry in the range of 7.78 to 600 µM, with a low detection limit of 1.08 µM (S/N = 3). When the pH varies in the range of 5.5 to 7.5, the sensor maintains a certain level of stability for glucose detection. The presence of lactic acid, urea, and ascorbic acid had minimal impact on glucose detection by the sensor. After 20 days of storage at room temperature, the sensor maintains 80 % efficiency. This study supports the development of wearable glucose sensors with high sensitivity, specificity, and stability through molecular imprinting.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) shows various brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities with recurrent central nervous system (CNS) attacks, although predominantly affecting the spinal cord and optic nerve. However, NMO with extensive involvement of the brain has infrequently been studied. We investigated the clinical, radiographic features and immunomodulating changes of NMO patients with extensive brain lesions (EBLs) in China. METHODS: NMO patients (including 16 NMO patients with EBLs and 53 NMO patients without EBLs) hospitalized during January 2006 and February 2010 were recruited and analyzed retrospectively. Data of clinical characteristics, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features, laboratory abnormalities, treatment details and outcomes were analyzed. All the patients received the follow-up visits for two years. RESULTS: EBLs in NMO were classified into four categories according to their respective MRI characteristics: 1) Tumefactive-like lesions (n=4, 25%); 2) Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)-like lesions (n=6, 37.5%); 3) Multiple sclerosis (MS)-like lesions (n=5, 31.25%); 4) Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES)-like lesions (n=1, 6.25%). NMO patients with EBLs had higher rates of encephalopathy symptoms (37.5% vs. 5.6%, p = 0.004), homonymous hemianopia (18.8% vs. 0%, p = 0.011) and AQP4 seropositivity (100% vs. 69.8%, p = 0.008) than NMO patients without EBLs (NEBLs). Immunomodulating changes (including the levels of C3, C4, ESR and CRP) were significantly higher in patients with EBLs than those without EBLs. The relapse times in EBLs during the follow-up period were more frequent than those happened in NEBLs (1.88 ± 0.30 vs. 1.23 ± 0.14, p = 0.04). The EDSS scores in EBLs patients were also much higher than those in NEBLs throughout all the whole visits of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of EBLs in NMO may indicate a higher diseases activity and portend a worse prognosis. CRP is a useful marker in monitoring diseases activity. Systemic inflammation may be crucial to the formation of EBLs in NMO.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are chronic neuro-inflammatory diseases believed to arise from complex interactions between environmental and genetic factors. Recently, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in interleukin (IL)-2 and -7 receptor alpha genes have been identified as novel susceptibility alleles for MS in genome-wide association studies. However, similar research on NMO is limited. We aimed to investigate the association of IL2RA SNPs rs2104286 and rs12722489 and IL7RA SNP rs6897932 with Southern Han Chinese NMO and MS patients. METHODS: Frequencies of the three SNPs were examined in Southern Han Chinese mS cases (n=78), NMS cases (n=67) and controls (n=133) using sequencing-based typing. RESULTS: The rs2104286(G) frequency in the IL2RA gene was significantly higher in NMO patients than in controls (p(uncorr)=0.013, p(corr)=0.026, OR:1.942, 95%CI:1.146-3.291). CONCLUSION: The rs2104286 G allele in IL2RA is present at higher frequencies in NMO patients than in healthy controls within a Southern Han Chinese population.Les allèles IL2RA augmentent le risque de neuromyélite optique chez les Chinois Han du sud.

AIM: To investigate the association of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) with acute diffusion-weighted imaging lesion volumes (DIV) and early neurologic deterioration (END) in brainstem infarctions (BSIs). METHODS: 152 patients with acute BSIs were included in this study. The relationship between HbA1c and DIV quartiles was examined. Data considered potentially associated with HbA1c and END after admission and patients' symptomatic changes prior to admission were collected. RESULTS: There was a significant correlation between HbA1c (%) and DIV (Spearman ρ=0.201, p=0.013). The median HbA1c (%) values for successive DIV quartiles (lowest to highest quartile) were as follows: 5.90, 6.35, 6.25, and 7.50 (p=0.033). The incidence of diabetes mellitus had a significant association with DIV quartiles (p=0.042). HbA1c was significantly associated with symptomatic progression prior to admission (p=0.015). 29 patients developed END after admission. Age, HbA1c, systolic blood pressure, and fibrinogen were significantly associated with END. On logistic regression analysis, HbA1c and fibrinogen proved to be independent variables. CONCLUSIONS: HbA1c may be a possible predictor for ischemic severity, early deterioration of acute BSIs, and short-term prognosis. Long-term good glycemic control is very important in BSIs. Further studies are warranted to confirm these results.

The main obstacle of ionic thermo-electrochemical cells (TECs) in continuous power supply lies in a low heat-to-electricity energy conversion efficiency because most TECs work in thermodiffusion mode in which the ions are confined in a liquid/electrolyte media. The introduction of the redox couple onto the electrode surface may overcome the obstacle by resolving the low mass transport rate of ions caused by the redox process occurring near but not on the electrode surface. Herein, the authors demonstrate enhancement of TECs by integrating the redox couple directly onto the electrode surface to maximize the mass transport efficiency. A discontinuous interfacial modification strategy is developed by using a carbon cloth/iron (II/III) phytate as the symmetric electrodes. The gelled electrolyte consisting of a polyacrylamide matrix and phytic acid is shown to promote selective ion diffusion. A synergistic combination consisting of the thermodiffusion effect and redox reactions on the electrode is established in a pre-treated layout. Such TEC affords a high output voltage of 0.4 V, an excellent instantaneous output power density (20.26 mW m-2 K-2 ) and a record-high 2 h output energy density (2451 J m-2 ) under TH = 30 °C with TC = 15 °C, with an ultrahigh Carnot-relative efficiency of 1.12%.

The concept that the immune system plays a central role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO) was indisputable. However, neurodegenerative pathological features including loss of axons and neurons were also found in the lesions of these diseases. α-Synuclein is one of the most abundant proteins in pre-synaptic terminals. Recently, many research show α-synuclein level in CSF may reflect the progression of synaptic dysfunction and neuronal apoptosis. Whether the levels of CSF α-synuclein are changed in MS and NMO patients remain unknown. In this study, CSF α-synuclein was measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in MS (n = 18) patients, NMO (n = 22) patients, Parkinson's disease patients (n = 9), and the controls (n = 11). We found concentration of α-synuclein in MS and NMO patients were significantly higher than Parkinson's disease subgroup and the controls. Both MS and NMO revealed an increased disease disability with increased CSF α-synuclein. Thus, CSF α-synuclein may be reflect injure axons and neurons in inflammatory demyelinating diseases.

BACKGROUND: BAFF (B-cell activating factor of the tumor necrosis factor family) and APRIL (a proliferation-inducing ligand) are two of the major survival factors for B cells. Many studies have shown that BAFF levels were elevated in MS patients. However, whether the levels of CSF BAFF/APRIL increased in NMO patients was still unclear. OBJECTIVE: To measure the CSF BAFF and APRIL concentration of in NMO patients, and explore their relationship with disease activity in NMO. METHODS: CSF BAFF and APRIL was measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in NMO (n = 22), MS (n = 18) patients and controls (n = 14). RESULTS: Concentration of BAFF and APRIL in NMO patients were significantly higher than MS and controls. CSF BAFF and APRIL levels in controls were also lower than MS. Both NMO and MS revealed an increased disease disability with increased CSF BAFF. CSF APRIL was associated with EDSS scores in NMO, but not found in MS. CONCLUSIONS: BAFF/APRIL system considered important for aggressive B cells and T-cell responses, and may stimulates B cells and T cell activation in acute relapse of NMO and MS. In NMO patients, CSF BAFF and APRIL may be key factors of B cell immune response and reflect disease severity.

BACKGROUND: IL-6 is a proinflammatory cytokine which is involved in the maintenance of the humoral response in various autoimmune disorders. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) IL-6 has shown to be increased in neuromyelitis optica (NMO). The soluble form of IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R), which links to IL-6, can activate biological responses in cells. Whether or not sIL-6R is altered in NMO has not been clarified. OBJECTIVE: To measure CSF IL-6 and sIL-6R in NMO and multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, and investigate whether IL-6 and sIL-6R have possible uses as sensitive biomarkers for diseases activity. METHODS: CSF concentrations of IL-6 and sIL-6R were measured by an ELISA in NMO (n = 22) and MS (n = 18) patients, as well as control subjects (n = 14). RESULTS: The concentration of IL-6 levels were higher in NMO compared to MS (p = 0.032) and the controls (p = 0.023). The levels of sIL-6R were also higher in NMO compared to MS (p = 0.002) and the controls (p < 0.001). CSF sIL-6R was associated with an Expanded Disability Status Scale score in NMO (p = 0.005) but not in MS (p = 0.891). In the MS subgroup, sIL-6R concentrations were associated with CSF white blood cells (p = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that CSF sIL-6R was increased in NMO patients, and correlated with clinical presentations.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system with complex pathogeneses. NMO was once considered to be a severe variant of MS. There has been more evidence that a non-synonymous exchange (rs763361/Gly307Ser) in the gene for CD226 is linked to several autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS). However, no studies have investigated the role of rs763361 in the pathogenesis of NMO. OBJECTIVES: The goal of our study is to evaluate the role of CD226 Gly307Ser in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) in Southern Han Chinese. METHODS: Eight-nine NMO patients, 93 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients, and 122 controls (CTLs) were enrolled. The rs763361 alleles of the subjects were determined by sequencing-based typing. RESULTS: The results strongly support that the TT genotypes are associated with NMO but are not significantly correlated with susceptibility for MS. CONCLUSIONS: CD226 Gly307Ser may correlate with risk of NMO in Southern Han Chinese.
