RESUMO

This study evaluated bond strength of glass fiber posts to root dentin using push-out (PO) and diametral compression (DC), testing glycolic acid as a conditioner and varying dentin moisture. An additional aim was to test whether DC can be an alternative test to PO for bond strength assessment. Eighty bovine teeth were divided into eight groups (n = 10) defined by the use of either 37% glycolic acid or 37% phosphoric acid (PA) on moist or wet dentin before bonding with either Adapter SingleBond/RelyX ARC or One Step Plus/Duo-Link Bisco. Each tooth provided discs with an internal diameter of 2 mm, external diameter of 5 mm, and height of 2 mm, which underwent PO and DC. Finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out on 3D models. When analyzing PO results through linear regression, the highest values of bond strength were observed using glycolic acid on wet dentin in the cervical and middle thirds of the teeth. Analyzing DC results, the only statistical influence on values was the dental thirds. The scatterplot of the DC results and the PO bond strength values indicated no relationship between the results of the two tests (r = 0.03; p = 0.64). PO test detected more sensitive changes in bond strength values than DC.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the antimicrobial action, cytotoxicity, cleaning ability, and erosion of dentine of hypochlorous acid (HClO) obtained from an electrolytic device at two different concentrations (Dentaqua) and three concentrations of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). METHODS: Microbiological test-The root canals of sixty single-rooted extracted human teeth were inoculated with Enterococcus faecalis and divided into 6 groups (n = 10), according to decontamination protocol: DW (control); 1% NaOCl; 2.5% NaOCl; 5.25% NaOCl; 250 ppm HClO and 500 ppm HClO. The colony-forming units were counted to evaluate the decontamination potential of each group, calculating the reduction in bacterial percentage. Cytotoxicity test-Cytotoxicity was evaluated after inoculation of the same tested protocols in fibroblastic cells for 3 min, calculating the cell viability percentages. Specifical statistical analysis was performed (α = 5%). Cleaning ability and erosion-Fifty-six single-rooted bovine lower incisors were divided into seven groups of 8 roots each, being the test groups 1% NaOCl; 2.5% NaOCl; 5,25% NaOCl; 250 ppm HClO and 500 ppm HClO, and a negative and positive control. Negative control was not contaminated, and the other groups were inoculated with Enterococcus faecalis. SEM images were ranked as from the cleanest to the least clean. Erosion was also assessed, being ranked from the least to the most eroded dentine. RESULTS: The highest bacterial reduction was observed in experimental groups, with no statistical differences between them (p > 0.05). The highest number of viable cells was observed in control group, followed by 250 ppm HClO and 500 ppm HClO groups, with statistical differences between them (p < 0.05). 1% NaOCl; 2.5% NaOCl; 5.25% NaOCl and 500 ppm HClO displayed the cleanest areas. All sodium hypochlorite groups displayed erosion with higher ranks with greater concentration, while hypochlorous acid did not display any erosion regardless the concentration. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to conclude that HClO obtained from an electrolytic device presented high antimicrobial activity and low cytotoxicity in both tested concentrations. 500 ppm HClO did not display erosion and showed great cleaning ability. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The use of 500 ppm hypochlorous acid may reduce unfavorable behavior of sodium hypochlorite whilst maintaining its antimicrobial action.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasonic activation (US) over glycolic acid on microhardness, cohesive strength, flexural strength, and fracture resistance of root dentin, comparing with conventional final irrigation protocols. METHODS: Samples were obtained from 140 extracted bovine teeth and distributed into four test groups: microhardness (50 teeth), cohesive strength (15 teeth), flexural strength (15 teeth), and fracture resistance (60 teeth). In all four tests, specimens were subdivided into five groups, according to final irrigation protocols: G1: distilled water (DW); G2: 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA); G3: 17% glycolic acid (GA); G4: 17% EDTA + US; and G5: 17% GA + US. The duration time of each protocol was set in 1 min. After irrigation protocols, the Vickers tester was used to evaluate microhardness and the universal testing machine was used to evaluate the cohesive strength, flexural strength, and fracture resistance of the root dentin. One-way ANOVA test and the Tukey HSD were used for multiple comparison tests in all evaluations (α = 5%). RESULTS: In general, groups 2 (EDTA), 4 (EDTA + US), and 5 (GA + US) promoted the highest reduction of microhardness, being statistically different from other groups (p < 0.05). Cohesive strength, flexural strength, and fracture resistance data revealed that no differences between groups were observed (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The association of GA and US results in microhardness reduction, with no influence on cohesive strength, flexural strength, and fracture resistance of the root dentin. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The use of US over GA has no influence on some mechanical properties of root dentin.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The development of filler biomaterials with high hyaluronic acid concentrations, cohesiveness, and elastic modulus has become an option for chin augmentation, as the balance of these rheological properties promotes high lifting capacity, providing minimally invasive perceptible improvements in patient appearance. PRESENTATION OF CASE: The present study reviewed clinical and anatomical aspects of patients referred for chin augmentation and created a flowchart to assertively diagnose patients with an indication of Juvéderm® Volux™ for defining the lower third of the face. DISCUSSION: The chin is vital for facial proportions and attractiveness perception. Its relevance to facial appearance is noticed the most when chin size is less than ideal, making other facial areas seem larger or smaller. The adjacent soft tissues of the neck and jaw appear prematurely aged when chin projection or width is inadequate. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers have a confirmed history of safe and effective use for treating facial volume loss or deficiency. CONCLUSION: Juvéderm® Volux™ is a safe, effective, and long-lasting alternative for restoring and creating facial volume and sculpting, shaping, and contouring the chin and jaw.

RESUMO

Background: The numerous techniques for identifying adulthood require research testing the accuracy of each method in different populations. This study verified the accuracy of the third molar maturity index (I3M) proposed by Cameriere et al. (2008) for diagnosing the age of majority in a southern Brazilian population sample. Material and Methods: Panoramic radiographs of patients with dental element 38 treated at the School of Dentistry of the University of Passo Fundo (UPF), RS, Brazil, were analyzed. The patients were separated into age groups between 15.00 and 22.99 years. The Cameriere (2008) method was applied to each radiograph. The study sample comprised 671 individuals, with 385 women (mean age 19.67 ± 2.05) and 286 men (mean age 19.5 ± 2.11). Results: The original cut-off value of I3M≤0.08 classified individuals younger and older than 18 years. ROC curve plotting resulted in an overall accuracy of 0.69 and 0.84 for women and men, respectively. The most favorable cut-off value for southern Brazilian men was 0.06, and women showed better results with an I3M adjusted to 0.13. The new cut-off values produced an accuracy of 0.78 for women and 0.84 for men. The original cut-off point to the I3M (0.08) was not the most appropriate for the studied sample. Conclusions: Thus, index adjustments to 0.13 for women and 0.06 for men may improve method performance among southern Brazilian individuals. RESUMO

Aim: to evaluate the occurrence of maxillofacial infection cases, which were treated at local hospital, identifying the main risk factors that determine the need for hospitalization of patients and the factors associated with staying length. Methods: A retrospective review of 191 records of patients with maxillofacial infection of odontogenic origin was performed, statistically evaluated by frequency and percentage of involvement, p values (based on the chi-square test) and odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Among all the 191 patients, 31 had some harmful habits, such as smokers (13%) and alcoholics (1%). In addition, 39 patients reported some general health problem, such as systemic arterial hypertension (8.3%), depression (6.8%), diabetes (3.6%) and some immunosuppression (1.57%). Involvement of infection in deep facial spaces was present, with 119 patients presenting a deeper infection (62.3%) and 72 patients a superficial infection (37.7%). The most prevalent clinical signs and symptoms in the initial evaluation were pain (91.1%) and edema (90.1%), followed by erythema/hyperemia (44.5%), trismus (37.7%), abscess (30.9%), cellulitis (27.7%), f istula (16.8%), fever (16.8%), dysphagia (11%), dehydration (9.9%), odynophagia (7.9% ) and dyspnea (3.7%). Pulp necrosis was considered a risk factor for treatment in a hospital environment (0.032) and root canal treatment decreases the risk of hospitalization (p=0.002). Considering the evaluated patients, 146 (76.4%) were admitted and 45 (37.7%) were not admitted for hospitalization after initial clinical evaluation. Conclusion: there is a high occurrence of maxillofacial infection cases of dental origin, considering that involvement of infection in deeper facial spaces, as well as presence of pain, edema, erythema/hyperemia, trismus, abscess, cellulitis and pulp necrosis, represent the main risk factors for hospitalization and staying length

AND "phosphoricacid" OR/AND "glycolicacid" OR/AND "hybridlayer" OR/AND "universal adhesive system".

The hybrid layeri s defined by the interdiffusion zone of the adhesive polymer and the dental substrate. Universal adhesive systems are materials that have been created with the aim of replacing the tooth structure that has been lost in order to reduce this area of adhesive interaction and the demineralized spaces of dentin. The aim of the following study is to perform a literature review on the influence of universal adhesives and the use of glycolic acid as a dental conditioning agent. A search was conducted in the current literature in the following databases: PubMed, Scielo, Medline and Google Scholar in English and Portuguese using the search terms: "adhesive systems" AND "phosphoric acid" AND "glycolic acid" AND "hybrid layer" OR "universal adhesive system". Research using glycolic acid as a dental conditioning agent has shown that the substance has potential and effectiveness, considerably reducing the region of collagen fibers exposed for the fusion of the universal adhesive. Glycolic acid used as a conditioning agent for enameland dent inproved to be effective and promising, considering that the hybrid layer was presented with less thickness without altering the dentin structure. However, further research his needed usinggly colic acid together with the universal adhesive system, for short, medium and long term.

RESUMO

Several variables can influence the treatment and outcome of orthognathic surgery, one of which is the angle of the mandibular ramus. The objective of this study is to analyze the upper airways (UA) of patients prior to orthognathic surgery, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to correlate their volume with the angle of the mandibular ramus. DICOM (Digital Image Communication in Medicine) images of a radiology clinic were used, with a survey of 124 full face CBCT scans, from 2015 to 2018, and the measurement of the total volume in mm³ through software. To obtain the values of the angle of the mandibular ramus, images obtained from medical reports were used, through morphological evaluation. The values were tabulated and subsequently statistical analysis was performed using the ANOVA test to assess the differences between the mean airway volumes (mm³) according to gender, age and mandibular ramus angle. However, the angle of the ramus did not influence the volume of the UA, but a greater average of UA volume was observed in male individuals and in individuals over 34 years of age. There is no evidence that it is possible to measure or predict the volume of the UA by evaluating the angle of the mandibular ramus. (AU)

(AU)

RESUMO

This study evaluated the incidence of unfilled second mesiobuccal (MB2) canals and periapical lesions in first maxillary molars using CBCT e-Vol DX software. Hence, 326 CBCT images of first maxillary molars of patients undergoing endodontic treatment were selected. The e-Vol DX software performed a retrospective review of these images, recording the presence or absence of MB2 canals, filling, and periapical lesions in first maxillary molars. Specific statistical analysis was performed at a 5% significance level. Unfilled MB2 canals were highly frequent in first maxillary molars and significantly associated with periapical lesions in the mesiobuccal root of these teeth (p<0.05). The CBCT e-Vol DX software effectively detected MB2 canals, and unfilled canals may be associated with periapical lesions.

Stafne's bone defect was considered for a long time as a bone cyst because it presents radiographically in a radiolucent, circumscribed form, with delimited borders and, in almost all cases, unilateral. Nowadays it is known that it is a depression and / or bone cavity caused by the accommodation of the submandibular gland or part of it and / or its adjacent tissues in the posterior region of the mandible, or in the anterior region in rarer cases by the accommodation of the sublingual gland. Therefore, the objective of this work is to carry out a brief literature review of the more specific characteristics and their variations of this anatomical anomaly. Searches were performed in journals of scientific articles published in electronic databases: PubMed, Scielo and Academic Google, containing scientific articles from the last ten years in English and Portuguese. The data show that the stafne bone defect has a predilection for males, it is asymptomatic, as it is an anatomical alteration, does not require treatment, therefore it is up to the dental surgeon to be aware, once panoramic to investigate other circumstances, and that many Sometimes it ends up leading the dental professional to perform misdiagnosis or mutilating tests such as a biopsy, which are unnecessary in this situation because this anatomical variation has characteristics that are very similar to cysts.

RESUMO

Periodontal disease is an infectious-inflammatory disease caused by the presence of bacteria in the dental biofilm, leading in many cases to tooth loss. The objective of this work is to report a clinical case of generalized periodontal disease. Female patient, sought the Dental Clinic of the University of Passo Fundo, complaining that her upper dental arch was increasingly "crooked" and felt a little "mobility". , being diagnosed with stage II periodontitis, due to the pandemic, the patient was only able to return to the Dental Clinic after 5 months, when new exams were carried out, with an increase in the probing depth reaching 7mm in some sites, having a new diagnosis periodontal disease, periodontitis stage III of the disease. The patient's treatment plan consisted of adapting the oral environment, through oral hygiene guidance, prophylaxis, supragingival and subgingival scaling. After 6 months of follow-up, it can be noted that the proposed treatment it was not satisfactory, because, after doing a new periogram, there was no regression of the disease. as for oral hygiene, the patient did not cooperate with the treatment and the installation of orthodontic appliances was not recommended. Periodontal maintenance along with the patient's cooperation is essential to achieve successful periodontal treatment, but in the following case report there was no success in periodontal therapy, and the patient's lack of cooperation could be one of the reasons. (AU)

The upper airspace is essential to understand the physiology and pathogenesis of its obstruction, complementary exams based on images have been used to evaluate the upper airspace. The objective of this study was to evaluate, by means of computed tomography, the upper airways (UAS), in relation to anatomical variables, emphasizing the gonial angle and comparing it with volume in mm³, sex and age. A total of 124 computed tomography scans were analyzed using DICOM files (digital image communication in medicine) made available by a radiology clinic using the ITK-snap program (version 3.6.0), upper airway volumes, sex, age and gonial angle values on both the right and left sides were tabulated in a table in the Excel 2010 program of the Microsoft Office 2010 package, and subsequently analyzed in the SPSS software with statistical analysis using the Levene Test and also the ANOVA test, to obtain of the results. The values found for the gonial angle did not indicate a significant difference. However, the present work confirms that within each of these groups there is a homogeneity of variances, corroborating the results reported in the literature. However, regarding the volume of the upper airways, we found that in men and in individuals aged over 34 years, the volume is greater.(AU)

The formation of oral structures occurs due to ectomesenchymal cell proliferation, which will originate an anatomical structure known as peri coronal follicle, which undergoes apoptosis after complete formation of the dental crown, causing its eruption. In some cases, there may be impaction of the tooth as a result of an alteration in the reduced epithelium of the enamel organ, which prevents epithelial self-destruction. These changes may be associated with blood type which, based on scientific findings, can prove a correlation between human diseases and the ABO blood system. Thus, the present research project aims to find out if there is a relationship between the anatomical structure of the peri coronal follicle and the dentigerous cyst, comparing it with the blood typing of the individuals who carry it. The research is descriptive with data collection of cases of peri coronal follicle and dentigerous cyst, sent to the histopathological laboratory of the University of Passo Fundo. The prevalence of the ABO blood system found for the anatomical alteration of the peri coronal follicle was A+ and for the pathological structure of the dentigerous cyst it was O+. The other classes, AB, were presented in a smaller percentage, with B+, B-, A- only in the peri coronal follicle, as well as O-. These results conclude that blood typing can establish a predisposition for odontogenic findings, requiring further research to confirm the clinical diagnosis. (AU)

(AU)
