BACKGROUND: Alopecia X in Pomeranians is caused by a hair cycle deregulation, associated with downregulation of key regulatory genes of the Wnt and Shh pathways, and stem-cell markers. However, the pathogenesis remains unclear. p63 is an important transcription factor correlated with the aforementioned hair cycle modulating genes. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to highlight possible changes of p63 immunohistochemical expression within the hair follicles in canine alopecia X compared with normal skin. ANIMALS: Skin biopsies from 19 alopecia X-affected and six control Pomeranians were analysed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serial histological sections of skin biopsies harbouring anagen, telogen and kenogen hair follicles were immunohistochemically evaluated for differences in p63 expression in the affected and control samples. RESULTS: Dogs with alopecia X had a significantly decreased immunoexpression of p63 in telogen and kenogen hair follicles. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The decrease of p63 immunoexpression observed in canine alopecia X suggests an involvement of p63 in hair cycle.

Since early autumn 2016, Mass Mortality Events (MME) have drastically impacted the population of the fan mussel Pinna nobilis in the Mediterranean Sea. Haplosporidium pinnae, a newly described Haplosporidian species, has been considered the causative agent of the mortality outbreaks in association to opportunistic bacterial pathogens. In the present study, we first reported a cytological description of H. pinnae in moribund specimens of P. nobilis which were collected in the Gulf of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Italy) during summer 2018. Different life-cycle stages of the parasite, including uni- and binucleate cells, small plasmodia, big multinucleate plasmodia and sporocysts with spores, were detected in all the examined animals and most of the parasite cells were present in gills, mantle and digestive gland, while the spores were found only in the latter organ. Histology and molecular biology were also performed, confirming the nature of the infectious agent, as already reported in the area. Additionally, molecular study revealed the presence of bacteria from the Mycobacterium ulcerans - M. marinum complex but no evident macroscopical or microscopical lesions, just as no bacteria referred to Mycobacterium were observed by histology. In conclusion, the present study aimed to provide further contributions to the understanding of the mortality of P. nobilis, pointing to the role of the cytological method of investigation both for diagnostic and epidemiological purposes, and discussing the current epidemic situation in the Adriatic sea.

The identification of avian poxvirus and avian papillomavirus associated with cutaneous lesions in griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) by histopathology, electron microscopy and PCR analysis is reported. Sequence analysis of the fpv140 gene revealed 99% identity to two poxviruses obtained from a white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) and a common buzzard (Buteo buteo). Partial sequence of the papillomavirus L1 gene showed sequence similarity to papillomavirus LI genes from African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) (69% identity), duck (Anas platyrhynchos) (68% identity), and yellow-necked francolin (Francolinus leucoscepus) (66% identity). To date, this is the first identification of avian poxvirus and papillomavirus in griffon vultures and the first evidence of infection of both viruses in live wild birds.

Despite the wide distribution of wild boar populations in Italy and the increase of its diffusion in urbanized areas, only one case report has described the occurrence of Echinococcus granulosus s.l. in a wild boar from Marche (Central Italy). The present study investigated the presence of E. granulosus sensu lato with an epidemiological survey on wild boars from central Italy that had been killed during hunting season. Seven hundred sixty-five (765) adult wild boars were examined during the 2016-2017 hunting season. Of these animals, 1.0% (8/765) were positive to E. granulosus s.l. with a fertility of 0.3% (2/765), and 2.9% animals (22/765) were positive for the metacestode stage of Taenia hydatigena (Cysticercus tenuicollis), while 0.5% (4/765) showed mixed infection (E. granulosus s.l. + T. hydatigena). Sixteen hydatids were found, of which 12.5% were fertile, 37.5% were sterile, 31.3% were caseous, and 18.8% were calcified. Eight hydatids (two fertile and six sterile cysts) were molecularly characterized by analysis of the mitochondrial gene, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1), and the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1). Hydatids found in wild boars were characterized as E. granulosus sensu stricto (G1 genotype). The present survey represents the first epidemiological study on cystic echinococcosis in wild boar in Italy which highlights the need for more extensive epidemiological investigations to determine the causal factors, economic impact, and public health importance of the disease in this livestock-wildlife setting.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are brominated flame retardants. Biomonitoring studies have shown widespread presence of PBDEs in humans and their accumulation in food chain cause concern to human health, especially for foetus and infant development. The early-life stages are generally considered more sensitive to exposure to toxic compounds than juvenile or adults. For this reason the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the three most environmentally relevant BDE (BDE- 47, 99 and 209) on zebrafish embryos. The fish embryo toxicity (FET) OECD tests on zebrafish were performed followed by histopathogical examination to assess morphological changes. The gene expression of the thyroid stimulating hormone ß (Tshß), the transport proteins transthyretin (Ttr) and thyroxine-binding globulin (Tbg) as well as the enzyme iodothyronine deiodinase 1 (Dio1) was also assessed by Real-time PCR. BDE-47 and BDE-99 showed an increase of the severity of the effects at the lower concentrations while for the BDE-209 the effects were higher to the high concentrations. Although all compounds did not show any acute toxicity for none of the concentrations tested, they reported interesting sub-acute lesions, including yolk and pericardial edema, tail and head malformation, reduced and extremely reduced heart beat rate, blood stasis and spinal curvature, with the highest percentage recorded for BDE-209. Cardiac edema, damage of eye structure and hydrocephaly were confirmed also by histophatological examination. Furthermore, a toxic and dose-dependent liver vacuolization in BDE-209 was observed in all experimental groups. Although no statistically significant difference in gene expression was observed, BDE-209 up-regulated only Dio1 while the other congeners induced Tshß, Ttr, Tbg and Dio1. Overall, this research highlighted that exposure to BDE-47, BDE-99 and BDE-209 at realistic concentrations caused lethal and sub-lethal alterations and impaired genes involved in thyroid hormones homeostasis leading to abnormal development of zebrafish embryos.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations have highlighted the controversial role of Wnt/ß-catenin pathway activation in human cutaneous melanoma. Survivin has been proposed as a valid prognostic marker for invasive and metastatic melanomas and lymph node melanoma metastasis in human cutaneous melanoma and is a promising therapeutic target. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of survivin and ß-catenin in canine cutaneous melanocytic tumours, in order to understand their prognostic significance. METHODS: Twenty-one melanocytic tumours (10 melanocytomas and 11 melanomas) were investigated by immunohistochemistry using specific anti-survivin and anti-ß-catenin antibodies. A semi-quantitative method was used to analyse the results; ß-catenin immunolabelling in neoplastic cells was evaluated as cytoplasmic, membranous or nuclear. The number of survivin-positive cells was counted within ~1000 neoplastic cells. Results were related to histopathological features, evaluated in haematoxylin- and eosin-stained slides, and to the clinical data obtained through a telephone survey with referring veterinarians. RESULTS: Despite a low level of expression in the majority of cases, ß-catenin was found to be correlated strongly with malignant behaviour (P < 0.01). An overexpression of nuclear survivin was statistically related to histological features of malignancy, presence of metastasis and death related to melanoma spread (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: The low nuclear ß-catenin expression, mainly found in metastatic cases, would indicate that ß-catenin activation may have only limited importance in the development or progression of canine cutaneous melanoma. The correlation of nuclear survivin expression with malignancy would indicate that survivin is possibly a useful prognostic marker and therapeutic target in canine melanoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Survivin has been identified as one of the most cancer-specific molecules, with a dual function of apoptosis inhibitor and orchestrator of cell division. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Based on our recent results obtained during the study of the role of survivin in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, we investigate its potential role in maintenance of stemness in both the normal canine hair follicle and related tumours. METHODS: We performed a simultaneous evaluation, by immunofluorescence, of the expression of survivin and CK15. CK15 was selected as a marker for epidermal and hair follicle stem cells, based on its ability to identify hair follicle stem cells in the normal hair follicle and in canine follicular tumours. In this study, six cases were selected from the cases of hair follicle tumours evaluated in previous studies, based on the highest immunoreactivity for survivin and CK15. Three samples of healthy canine skin were also included as a normal control. RESULTS: A partial co-localization of the molecules was observed in normal hair follicles, as well as in trichoepitheliomas and trichoblastomas. In particular, a different co-expression was observed in relationship to the hair follicle cycle stage. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: These findings suggest that survivin could play an important role in the maintenance of the hair follicle cycle as well as in tumour initiation and maintenance of cancer stem cells.

Two boa constrictors (Boa constrictor imperator) presented with paresis of the trunk originating cranial to the cloaca. Radiographs were consistent with proliferative bone lesions involving several vertebrae. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated the presence of lytic/expansile lesions. Computed tomography-guided biopsies of the lesions were performed without complications. Histology was consistent with bacterial osteomyelitis and osteoarthritis. Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella sp. and Pseudomonas sp.) were isolated from cultures of the biopsies. Medical treatment with specific antibiotics was attempted for several weeks in both cases without clinical or radiographic improvements. The animals were euthanized, and necropsy confirmed the findings observed upon CT. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of the use of CT-guided biopsies to evaluate proliferative vertebral lesions in snakes. In the present report, CT-guided biopsies were easily performed, and both histologic and microbiologic results were consistent with the final diagnosis.

Mast cell tumours (MCTs) are common malignant neoplasms in dogs, for which prognosis and therapeutic decisions are based on histological features and proliferation markers. Autophagy is a cellular catabolic process responsible for degrading cytoplasmic components to maintain homeostasis, alterations in which are frequently linked to tumour growth and progression. This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence of autophagy in canine MCTs and to verify its value as a prognostic indicator for dogs with the disease. Beclin-1 and LC3B expressions were investigated using immunohistochemistry, and autophagy was ultrastructurally characterised. The autophagic phenomenon was successfully visualised in neoplastic mast cells under transmission electron and immunoelectron microscopy. MCTs from dogs that died due to the disease showed higher positivity for Beclin-1 and dogs with MCTs presenting a LC3B granular immunohistochemical pattern had a significantly shorter post-surgical survival. The occurrence of autophagy is an indicator of poor prognosis. Future studies are needed to elucidate the specific mechanisms and open new opportunities to treatments targeting this cancer cell advantage.

Glyphosate (Gly), a systemic and non-selective post-emergence herbicide used worldwide, has emerged as a pollutant. However, its toxic effects are debated by regulatory authorities. In addition, in the aquatic environment, often the presence of pollutants is associated with a hypoxia condition that could change their toxicological effects. We used zebrafish embryos to evaluate the toxic effects of Gly and its mechanisms in a hypoxic condition chemically induced by cobalt chloride (CoCl2). We found that Gly induced toxicity in a time and concentration-dependent manner. The toxicity of Gly was determined at 96 h post fertilization as a lethal concentration (LC), and LC10, LC20, and LC50 values were 85.7, 97, and 122.9 mg/L, respectively. When Gly was combined with CoCl2 the toxicological endpoints were lower than values referred to the Gly alone indicating the worse effects of chemical hypoxia on Gly toxicity. Histological observations were performed at 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg/L for Gly both alone and in combination with 10 mM CoCl2. Fisher's exact test showed significant differences in the presence of hepatic and gut inflammation at 75 and 100 mg/L of Gly both alone and in combination with CoCl2. To deeply investigate the effects of hypoxia on Gly toxicity we decided to test the lowest dose of Gly, 50 mg/L, alone or in combination with CoCl2 10 mM on liver glycogen storage and oxidative stress. Again the results obtained indicate the worse effects of chemical hypoxia on Gly toxicity. Thus Gly toxicity could be reconsidered in light of the damage it causes to the liver and intestines and its effect in combination with factors that induce chemical hypoxia.

The elongated soft palate is an abnormality that characterizes most brachycephalic dogs and contributes to the brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). Palatoplasty is routinely performed in brachycephalic dogs; several surgical techniques exist. The use of surgical instruments such as monopolar electrocoagulation, CO2 or diode laser, bipolar vessel sealing device and harmonic shears has become routine to reduce the operating time, the intraoperative risk of bleeding and the postoperative oedema. This prospective study aimed to compare the histomorphological effect of a CO2 laser and LigaSure device in palates of dogs undergoing palatoplasty. Twenty owned brachycephalic dogs were included, 10 palatoplasties were performed using CO2 laser and 10 using LigaSure™ device. The dogs were positioned in sternal recumbency. A transoral approach was performed: the elongated soft palate was grasped with Allis forceps and brought rostrally, the palatoplasty was performed using the tonsillar crypts as anatomical landmarks. Surgical specimens were routinely fixed in 10â¯% formalin. Two sections perpendicular to the surgical margins were trimmed from each sample, paraffin-embedded and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Tissue damage induced by the two types of surgical devices was graded (1-4, from minimal to severe) and the depth of thermal injury measured in µm on captured images (using an image analysis program - ImageJ). Mean values and standard deviations (SD) were calculated based on six measurements for each sample. The tissue damage was graded 3.7±0.48 in group LigaSure™ and 2.8±1 in group Laser. The mean depth of thermal injury was 874.94±184.92 µm in the LigaSure™ group and 451,76±137,86 µm in the Laser group. The comparison between the two groups showed significant lower grade and extension of thermal injury in the palate samples obtained with CO2 laser (p<0.05). Additionally, there is a lack of literature that correlates the histological changes with the clinical outcomes of the different palatoplasty methods in brachycephalic dogs. By comparing histological changes and clinical outcomes, we aim to provide valuable insights for optimizing the surgical approach for palatoplasty in brachycephalic dogs, ultimately improving postoperative outcomes for these patients.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an important cell population in the bone marrow microenvironment. MSCs have the capacity to differentiate in vitro into several mesenchymal tissues including bone, cartilage, fat, tendon, muscle, and marrow stroma. This study was designed to isolate, expand, and characterize the differentiation ability of sheep bone marrow-derived MSCs and to demonstrate the possibility to permanently express a reporter gene. Bone marrow was collected from the iliac crest and mononuclear cells were separated by density gradient centrifugation. Sheep MSCs cell lines were stable characterized as CD44+ and CD34- and then transfected with a green fluorescent protein (GFP) reporter gene. The GFP expression was maintained in about half (46.6%) of cloned blastocysts produced by nuclear transfer of GFP+ sheep MSCs, suggesting the possibility to establish multipotent embryonic cells' lines carrying the fluorescent tag for comparative studies on the differentiation capacity of adult stem cells (MSCs) versus embryonic stem cells. We found that sheep MSCs under appropriate culture conditions could be induced to differentiate into adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteoblast lineages. Our results confirm the plasticity of sheep MSCs and establish the foundation for the development of a pre-clinical sheep model to test the efficiency and safety of cell replacement therapy.

The Mexican Goodeid, Zoogoneticus tequila, is considered nearly extinct in the wild and it is maintained in captivity by the nonprofit international "Goodeid Working Group." The unique Italian colony has produced about 180 fish so far. The observable diseases were registered and some fish were submitted, immediately after spontaneous death, to necroscopic and histopathologic exams. Encountered diseases included the following: 7 cases of scoliosis (2 males and 5 females); 2 fish with a similar congenital deviation of ocular axis; 1 adult male with left corneal opacity, presumably of traumatic origin; 1 female fish with a large subocular fluid-filled sac, histologically referable to a lymphatic cyst, similarly to the eye sacs of a Goldfish variety (Carassius auratus) called bubble eye; and 1 female fish with recurrent abdominal distension consequent to distal bowel dilation and thinning, associated with complete mucosal atrophy, and comparable to intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndromes described in humans and various animal species. The absence of infectious or parasitic diseases, as well as the low incidence of diseases potentially related to environmental alterations or nutritional disorders such as spinal deformities, suggests the adequacy of breeding management techniques of Z. tequila for its conservation and reintroduction in to the original habitat in the near future.

This report describes the pathological findings in a 15-year-old spayed female Domestic Shorthaired cat with a pulmonary adenocarcinoma characterized by feline lung-digit syndrome (FLDS) and unusual tongue metastasis. Felis catus papillomavirus type 3 (FcaPV-3) DNA was amplified from the lingual sample but not from samples of the pulmonary mass or digital or splenic metastatic lesions, indicating the presence of FcaPV-3 in the oral cavity but not suggesting a role for FcaPVs in tumour pathogenesis. FLDS is a clinical entity in which primary lung tumours present because of metastatic digital lesions. In humans, tongue metastasis may be a rare initial presentation of lung cancer, whereas, to the best of our knowledge, tongue metastasis of feline tumours has not been reported. Although lingual metastases are rare, the present findings serve to remind clinicians that metastatic manifestations of primary lung tumours in cats may involve multiple extrapulmonary sites, including the tongue.

BACKGROUND: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are common environmental contaminants that represent an important risk factor of reproductive disorders in chronically exposed human populations. However, it is not known whether a short accidental exposure of embryos to PCBs before implantation might influence their further development and whether the effect might be reversible. METHODS AND RESULTS: To this aim, in vitro-matured sheep blastocysts were incubated with 2 or 4 µg/ml Aroclor 1254 (A1254), a mixture of 60 PCB congeners for 48 h after which blastocyst proliferation and ability for outgrowth in vitro were assessed. Blastocysts exposed to A1254 showed: (i) reduced proliferation and cell number (particularly in the inner cell mass compartment); (ii) accumulation of vacuoles and lipid droplets, diffused mitochondrial damage and up-regulation of autophagy markers (ATG6 and LC3), all signs indicative of deregulated autophagy, and (iii) massive cell death. Although exposed embryos resumed growth following A1254 removal, their subsequent development remained severely perturbed. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that short exposure of blastocysts to PCBs leads to its damage characterized by deregulated autophagy and subsequent cell death.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma (OSA) represents the most common canine primary bone tumour. Despite several pathways have been investigated so far, few molecules have been identified as prognostic tools or potential therapeutic targets, and there is still the need to find out molecular pathways with specific influence over OSA progression to facilitate earlier prognosis and treatment.Aims of the present study were to evaluate the immunohistochemical pattern and levels of expression of a panel of molecules (survivin, ß-catenin, caspase 3 -inactive and active forms- and p53) involved in cell cycle and apoptosis regulation in canine OSA samples, known to be of interest in the study also of human OSA, and to detect specific relations among them and with histological tumour grade, disease free interval (DFI) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Nuclear ß-catenin immunostaining was detected in normal osteoblasts adjacent to the tumour, and in 47% of the cases. Cytoplasmic and/or membranous immunostaining were also observed. Nuclear survivin and p53 positive cells were found in all cases. Moderate/high cytoplasmic ß-catenin expression (≥10% positive cells) was significantly associated with the development of metastasis (P = 0.014); moderate/high nuclear p53 expression (≥10% positive cells) was significantly associated with moderate/high histological grade (P = 0.017) and shorter OS (P = 0.049). Moderate/high nuclear survivin expression (≥15% positive cells) showed a tendency toward a longer OS (P = 0,088). CONCLUSIONS: The present results confirmed p53 as negative prognostic marker, while suggested survivin as a potential positive prognostic indicator, rather than indicative of a poor prognosis. The detection of nuclear ß-catenin immunostaining in normal osteoblasts and the absent/low expression in most of the OSAs, suggested that this pathway could not play a major role in oncogenic transformation of canine osteoblasts. Further studies are needed to confirm these hypotheses.

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous glands are specialized cutaneous adnexal glands, which work under constant hormonal control to produce sebum. They can give rise to several proliferative lesions, such as hamartoma, hyperplasia and neoplasms (adenoma, epithelioma and carcinoma). Their nomenclature is currently confusing, both in veterinary and in human medicine, owing to the difficulty of differentiating between some of these lesions. METHODS: The present study used immunohistochemistry to determine the expression levels and patterns of survivin and Ki67 in five samples of normal canine skin and 44 cases of canine cutaneous lesions with sebaceous differentiation (10 hamartomas, nine hyperplasia, eight adenomas, eight epitheliomas and nine carcinomas). RESULTS: In normal glands, survivin, as well as Ki67, was expressed in scattered reserve cells. In hamartomas, survivin was more highly expressed than in normal skin, indicating a possible role of this molecule in the pathogenesis of these congenital lesions. In tumours, a moderate or high level of survivin and Ki67 expression (more than two and four and more than two positive cells, respectively) were significantly correlated with a malignant histotype, infiltrative growth and a moderate or high number of mitoses (more than two). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: The level of survivin expression increased with increasing malignancy, designating survivin as a new diagnostic marker in the assessment of malignancy of sebaceous tumours.

Histological approach to long-term culture on collagen type I permits the evaluation of vasculogenic mimicry morphological features and the identification of endothelial-like cell-specific antigens. Here, we show the preparation of collagen type I solution, the embedding and the sections cutting of D17 osteosarcoma cells long-term culture, and then the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining to identify endothelial-like structure. Moreover, we provide the protocols for periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining to evidence glycoproteins and CD31 immunohistochemistry to exclude the presence of this endothelial marker, as per definition by vasculogenic mimicry concept. This method allows to consider long-term culture as tissue, promoting the deeper study of vascular-like structures in vitro.

Dead specimens provide valuable data for the conservation of threatened species, allowing investigations of mortality, health conditions, and demographic parameters. The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a semiaquatic carnivore listed as endangered in Italy. In 2009, we started the first post mortem (PM) study of otters in Italy, through collaborative research between mammal ecologists and veterinary pathologists, using standardized protocols. Twenty-eight otters, mostly collected between 2009 and 2017, were examined. Most otters were males (67%), between 1 and 3 years old (64%), and predominantly in good nutritional condition. Adult males were significantly larger than adult females (p < 0.02), as expected for the species, although both sexes appeared to be smaller than otters examined in Central−northern Europe. The youngest sexually mature female was 3 years old. Road traffic collisions were the major cause of death, especially in young individuals, and mainly occurred in autumn−winter, particularly for females. Investigations of the scene of death contributed to revealing factors forcing otters to travel out of the water and move over the road, suggesting appropriate measures to reduce vehicle collision risk. Other causes of death included blunt chest trauma of uncertain origin, dog and conspecific attacks, or diseases of infectious or non-infectious origin, such as ulcerative gastritis, pleuropneumonia and peritonitis. Other diagnosed diseases included lymphoma. Ecto- and endoparasites were rarely detected, although we report the first documentation of heartworm and Ixodes hexagonus infestation in Italian otters. It is important to continue comprehensive, standardized PM investigations of otters in Italy to define baseline health, biometric and demographic parameters, collect biological samples for comparative analyses, and to reduce road-kill mortality. The present study suggests that the timely collection of carcasses and collaborative and coordinated research efforts are essential for obtaining useful data for the conservation of otters.

Mammary gland tumours have a significant impact on the health of dogs, requiring diagnostic tools to support clinicians to develop appropriate therapeutic strategies. Sonoelastography is an emerging technology that is able to define the stiffness of the tissue and has promising applications in the evaluation of mammary gland lesions. In the present study, strain elastography (STE) and shear-wave (SWE) elastography were compared in 38 mammary nodular lesions for their ability to define the histopathological features of canine mammary lesions. Among the techniques, SWE showed better repeatability (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.876), whereas STE was found to be only acceptable (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.456). Mammary nodular lesions showed a wide range of tissue stiffening with a similar mean value for STE and SWE in benign (4 ± 0.3 and 115.4 ± 12.6 kPa, respectively) and malignant lesions (3.8 ± 0.1 and 115.5 ± 4.5 kPa, respectively). A significant correlation was found between lesion fibrosis and STE (STE-I: r = 0.513, p < 0.001; STE-R: r = 0.591, p < 0.001) or SWE-S (r = 0.769; p < 0.001). In conclusion, SWE was reliable and correlated with fibrosis and was similar for both benign and malignant lesions, suggesting that other collateral diagnostic techniques should be considered in conjunction with SWE to characterize mammary nodular lesions in dogs.
