BACKGROUND: In the working population, there are risks of overload due to physical, mental, and emotional demands. No instrument is available in Spanish to measure these three types of work fatigue (WF) separately. This paper adapts the Three-Dimensional Work Fatigue Inventory (3D-WFI) (2015), which is of American origin and measures and differentiates these three different types of WF. It has adequate psychometric properties at its root, as do the subsequent German (2018), Lebanese (2022), and Chinese (2023) adaptations. METHODS: A total of 1100 workers (average age = 40 years) from economic sectors such as security and transportation of valuables, secondary and university educational institutions, and healthcare centers participated. They responded to the 3D-WFI, the Health-Related Quality of Life Index, and the Individual Strength Checklist for concurrent validity effects, together with items with sociodemographic and lifestyle variables. RESULTS: A confirmatory factor analysis with the total sample 3D-WFI supports its three-dimensionality; Cronbach's alpha and Omega values are adequate by dimensions: for physical work fatigue (α = 0.92, Ω = 0.92), for mental work fatigue (α = 0.94. Ω = 0.94), and emotional work fatigue (α = 0.95, Ω = 0.95). The 3D-WFI correlates significantly with the Checklist Individual Strength (0.743), and a pattern of significant relationships is found between WF and antecedent variables (e.g., being exposed to heat and noise, emotional labor, concentration, and workwear), as well as some consequences of WF (for example, mental health, absenteeism, work satisfaction, and sleep quality). CONCLUSIONS: We contribute here to the cross-cultural validity of the 3D-WFI, which can be used reliably and validly in the Chilean and probably Latin American working population. Some WF predictor variables are confirmed, as well as WF impacts on the absenteeism, health, and quality of life among workers.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane block (US-TAP) is an important component of multimodal analgesia in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, although it has certain limitations. To overcome them, surgeons have developed several techniques to perform local anesthetic infiltration under laparoscopic guidance, but no trials evaluating these in transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) hernia repair were conducted till the date. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of a novel laparoscopic-guided local anesthetic infiltration technique (LDAI) with US-TAP in postoperative pain control and analgesic consumption for patients undergoing elective TAPP hernia repair. METHODS: This was a double-blind randomized controlled trial conducted at a single tertiary academic center between 2019 and 2020 on adult patients undergoing elective laparoscopic TAPP inguinal hernia repair. Postoperative pain and analgesic consumption were compared for LDAI vs. US-TAP up to 30 postoperative days. RESULTS: 62 patients were included (31 LDAI, 31 US-TAP). Female gender was significantly higher in the LDAI group (8, 25.81%; US-TAP 0; p = 0.005). Mean anesthetic time (US-TAP group: 142.2 min, SD = 17.7; LDAI group: 127.1 min, SD = 15.5; p < 0.001) and mean operative time (US-TAP group: 117.2 min, SD = 15.9; LDAI group: 103.8 min, SD = 15.2; p < 0.001) were significantly shorter in the LDAI group. Pain scores assessed at the first-hour postoperative, at the moment of discharge, and at 8, 24, and 48 postoperative hours showed no significant differences between both groups. No significant difference was found regarding postoperative analgesic rescue administration in the recovery room and analgesic consumption after discharge between groups. CONCLUSION: LDAI is a safe and effective local anesthetic technique in elective TAPP hernia repair. Pain control is similar to US-TAP block, with shorter anesthesthetic and surgical time and better health resources allocation.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a serious public health issue affecting 9-15% of all pregnancies worldwide. Recently, it has been suggested that extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a role throughout gestation, including mediating a placental response to hyperglycaemia. Here, we investigated the EV-associated miRNA profile across gestation in GDM, assessed their utility in developing accurate, multivariate classification models, and determined the signaling pathways in skeletal muscle proteome associated with the changes in the EV miRNA profile. METHODS: Discovery: A retrospective, case-control study design was used to identify EV-associated miRNAs that vary across pregnancy and clinical status (i.e. GDM or Normal Glucose Tolerance, NGT). EVs were isolated from maternal plasma obtained at early, mid and late gestation (n = 29) and small RNA sequencing was performed. Validation: A longitudinal study design was used to quantify expression of selected miRNAs. EV miRNAs were quantified by real-time PCR (cases = 8, control = 14, samples at three times during pregnancy) and their individual and combined classification efficiencies were evaluated. Quantitative, data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry was use to establish the protein profile in skeletal muscle biopsies from normal and GDM. RESULTS: A total of 2822 miRNAs were analyzed using a small RNA library, and a total of 563 miRNAs that significantly changed (p < 0.05) across gestation and 101 miRNAs were significantly changed between NGT and GDM. Analysis of the miRNA changes in NGT and GDM separately identified a total of 256 (NGT-group), and 302 (GDM-group) miRNAs that change across gestation. A multivariate classification model was developed, based on the quantitative expression of EV-associated miRNAs, and the accuracy to correctly assign samples was > 90%. We identified a set of proteins in skeletal muscle biopsies from women with GDM associated with JAK-STAT signaling which could be targeted by the miRNA-92a-3p within circulating EVs. Interestingly, overexpression of miRNA-92a-3p in primary skeletal muscle cells increase insulin-stimulated glucose uptake. CONCLUSIONS: During early pregnancy, differently-expressed, EV-associated miRNAs may be of clinical utility in identifying presymptomatic women who will subsequently develop GDM later in gestation. We suggest that miRNA-92a-3p within EVs might be a protected mechanism to increase skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity in GDM.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to verify the relationships between sleep problems and both commuting and workplace accidents in workers of both sexes. METHODS: The study was carried out with a sample of workers (n = 2993; 50.2% female) from the Chilean Quality of Life Survey (ENCAVI) 2015-2016, while the rates of both workplace and commuting accidents were extracted from the statistics of the Superintendence of Social Security (SUSESO 2015; 180,036 and 52,629 lost-time accidents, respectively). RESULTS: Chilean workers sleep less than the rest of the people in the country (MW = 7.14 vs. MO = 7.33; t (6789) = - 5.19; p < .001), while the Chilean people as a whole sleep less compared to those of other countries (7.24 h per day). Likewise, it was found that sleep problems are more strongly related to commuting than to workplace accidents. In this vein, sleep quantity can explain 24% of the variance in commuting accidents' rates (Stepwise Method; R2 = .30, F (1.14) = 5.49, p < .05; ß = -.55, p < .05), by using aggregated data with all types of commuting roles (driver of a vehicle, a passenger of public or private transport, or as a pedestrian). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that sleep quantity has a more robust relationship with commuting than workplace accidents, a neglected issue so far. Future prevention programs should emphasize sleep hygiene and focus on commuting to and from work.

The purinergic receptor P2X3 (P2X3-R) plays important roles in molecular pathways of pain, and reduction of its activity or expression effectively reduces chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain sensation. Inflammation, nerve injury, and cancer-induced pain can increase P2X3-R mRNA and/or protein levels in dorsal root ganglia (DRG). However, P2X3-R expression is unaltered or even reduced in other pain studies. The reasons for these discrepancies are unknown and might depend on the applied traumatic intervention or on intrinsic factors such as age, gender, genetic background, and/or epigenetics. In this study, we sought to get insights into the molecular mechanisms responsible for inflammatory hyperalgesia by determining P2X3-R expression in DRG neurons of juvenile male rats that received a Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) bilateral paw injection. We demonstrate that all CFA-treated rats showed inflammatory hyperalgesia, however, only a fraction (14-20%) displayed increased P2X3-R mRNA levels, reproducible across both sides. Immunostaining assays did not reveal significant increases in the percentage of P2X3-positive neurons, indicating that increased P2X3-R at DRG somas is not critical for inducing inflammatory hyperalgesia in CFA-treated rats. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays showed a correlated (R2 = 0.671) enrichment of the transcription factor Runx1 and the epigenetic active mark histone H3 acetylation (H3Ac) at the P2X3-R gene promoter in a fraction of the CFA-treated rats. These results suggest that animal-specific increases in P2X3-R mRNA levels are likely associated with the genetic/epigenetic context of the P2X3-R locus that controls P2X3-R gene transcription by recruiting Runx1 and epigenetic co-regulators that mediate histone acetylation.

The radial acceleration measured in bright galaxies tightly correlates with that generated by the observed distribution of baryons, a phenomenon known as the radial acceleration relation (RAR). Dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies have been recently found to depart from the extrapolation of the RAR measured for more massive objects but with a substantially larger scatter. If confirmed by new data, this result provides a powerful test of the theory of gravity at low accelerations that requires robust theoretical predictions. By using high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations, we show that, within the standard model of cosmology (ΛCDM), satellite galaxies are expected to follow the same RAR as brighter systems but with a much larger scatter which does not correlate with the physical properties of the galaxies. In the simulations, the RAR evolves mildly with redshift. Moreover, the acceleration due to the gravitational field of the host has no effect on the RAR. This is in contrast with the external field effect in modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) which causes galaxies in strong external fields to deviate from the RAR. This difference between ΛCDM and MOND offers a possible way to discriminate between them.

There is increasing evidence that miRNAs, which are enriched in nanovesicles called exosomes, are important regulators of gene expression. When compared with normal pregnancies, pregnancies with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are associated with skeletal muscle insulin resistance as well as increased levels of circulating placental exosomes. Here we investigated whether placental exosomes in GDM carry a specific set of miRNAs associated with skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity. Exosomes were isolated from chorionic villous (CV) explants from both women with Normal Glucose Tolerant (NGT) and GDM pregnancies. Using miRNA sequencing, we identified a specific set of miRNAs selectively enriched with exosomes and compared with their cells of origin indicating a specific packaging of miRNAs into exosomes. Gene target and ontology analysis of miRNA differentially expressed in exosomes secreted in GDM compared with NGT are associated with pathways regulating cell migration and carbohydrate metabolism. We determined the expression of a selected set of miRNAs in placenta, plasma, and skeletal muscle biopsies from NGT and GDM. Interestingly, the expression of these miRNAs varied in a consistent pattern in the placenta, in circulating exosomes, and in skeletal muscle in GDM. Placental exosomes from GDM pregnancies decreased insulin-stimulated migration and glucose uptake in primary skeletal muscle cells obtained from patients with normal insulin sensitivity. Interestingly, placental exosomes from NGT increase migration and glucose uptake in response to insulin in skeletal muscle from diabetic subjects. These findings suggest that placental exosomes might have a role in the changes on insulin sensitivity in normal and GDM pregnancies.

We present a rare injury consisting of a neglected, irreducible, dislocation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint that was diagnosed 4 months after the injury. An open reduction was necessary from the beginning. Patient returned to full activity without pain or disability, so a good prognosis despite the delayed diagnosis was achieved. We are unaware of previous reports in the literature describing this unusual variant.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus causes motor nerve dysfunction and degeneration that may alter the response to neuromuscular blocking drugs. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the risk of residual neuromuscular block (RNMB) induced by rocuronium given in standard doses to patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). DESIGN: A prospective, observational study. SETTINGS: Hospital San Jorge, Huesca and Hospital San Pedro, Logroño, Spain, from December 2011 to June 2012. PATIENTS: T2DM patients with no diabetic neuropathy or neurological symptoms (nâ=â32) and healthy controls (nâ=â39). INTERVENTION: All participants received a single dose of rocuronium 0.6âmgâkg. Neuromuscular block was monitored throughout surgery until a train of four (TOF) ratio of at least 0.9 was achieved. MAIN OUTCOME: Time from rocuronium injection to a TOF ratio of at least 0.9 (DURTOF90). SECONDARY OUTCOMES: Time to reappearance of T1, T2, T3 and T4 of TOF; glycosylated haemoglobin values (HbA1c); correlation between blood glucose control and DURTOF90 in the group of diabetic patients. RESULTS: No significant differences in age, weight, renal function or other characteristics interfering with neuromuscular block were seen between T2DM patients and controls. DURTOF90 was significantly longer in the group of T2DM patients than in the controls (109.86 vs. 84.77âmin, Pâ=â0.001). Times to reappearance of T1, T2, T3 and T4 of TOF were also significantly longer in the T2DM group. No correlation was found between HbA1C and DURTOF90 values. In addition, DURTOF90 did not appear to be related to elevated blood glucose levels. CONCLUSION: Diabetic patients, even in the absence of complications, have an increased risk of RNMB after rocuronium administration compared with those without diabetes. Poorer glycaemic control of diabetes does not appear to increase the risk. Appropriate dose and vigilant monitoring of the neuromuscular blocker is helpful in patients with T2DM.

Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid type 1 channel (TRPV1) is an important endogenous transducer of noxious heat and chemical stimuli and is required during development of inflammatory hypersensitivity. The transcription factor Runx1 is known to play a relevant role in sensory neuron differentiation as it controls the expression of several sensory nociceptive receptors, including TRPV1. Here, we show that Runx1 up-regulates TRPV1 transcription activity by interacting directly with the proximal TRPV1 gene promoter sequence. Importantly, C/EBPß a well-established heterodimer partner of Runx1 also binds to the TRPV1 promoter and cooperates with Runx1 to further stimulate TRPV1 transcription. Our results support a mechanism where Runx1-C/EBPß-containing transcription regulatory complexes are recruited to the TRPV1 gene promoter to modulate TRPV1 expression in dorsal root ganglia neurons.

On 18 October 2019, the Chilean people witnessed an unprecedented social outbreak across most of their country. We argue that a state of anomie is a factor associated with the weakening of states, and an anomic state might negatively influence people's well-being through an increased feeling of irritation. Convenience recruitment via social networks allowed us to form a sample of 194 Chilean participants from the center-south region of the country (M = 36.53 years old, SD = 17.48; 56.7% women). All participants completed testing instruments to measure anomie, irritation, happiness, and political beliefs. Descriptive scores suggest situating Chile in the quadrant of high anomie. Two mediation analyses were conducted. The main results showed a negative indirect effect of the breakdown of the social fabric and leadership on happiness through irritation, although the findings for the former dimension were more robust. Additionally, the breakdown of the social fabric was positively related to the belief that left and right-wing democratic governments are helpless when it comes to fighting delinquency. The breakdown of leadership, on the other hand, was negatively related to political interest. The results should be interpreted with caution due to the limitations of the sample type and the construction validity of some instruments.

PURPOSE: Although the prevalence of community-acquired respiratory bacterial coinfection upon hospital admission in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been reported to be < 5%, almost three-quarters of patients received antibiotics. We aim to investigate whether procalcitonin (PCT) or C-reactive protein (CRP) upon admission could be helpful biomarkers to identify bacterial coinfection among patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. METHODS: We carried out a multicentre, observational cohort study including consecutive COVID-19 patients admitted to 55 Spanish intensive care units (ICUs). The primary outcome was to explore whether PCT or CRP serum levels upon hospital admission could predict bacterial coinfection among patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The secondary outcome was the evaluation of their association with mortality. We also conducted subgroups analyses in higher risk profile populations. RESULTS: Between 5 February 2020 and 21 December 2021, 4076 patients were included, 133 (3%) of whom presented bacterial coinfection. PCT and CRP had low area under curve (AUC) scores at the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis [0.57 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.51-0.61) and 0.6 (95% CI, 0.55-0.64), respectively], but high negative predictive values (NPV) [97.5% (95% CI 96.5-98.5) and 98.2% (95% CI 97.5-98.9) for PCT and CRP, respectively]. CRP alone was associated with bacterial coinfection (OR 2, 95% CI 1.25-3.19; p = 0.004). The overall 15, 30 and 90 days mortality had a higher trend in the bacterial coinfection group, but without significant difference. PCT ≥ 0.12 ng/mL was associated with higher 90 days mortality. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that measurements of PCT and CRP, alone and at a single time point, are not useful for ruling in or out bacterial coinfection in viral pneumonia by COVID-19.

It is well known that the metabolism of alcohol and cognitive functions can vary during the menstrual cycle. Also, both alcohol ingestion and hormonal variations during menstruation have been associated with characteristic changes in electroencephalographic (EEG) activity. The aim of the present study was to determine whether EEG activity during the performance of the Tower of London (TOL) task is affected by previous ingestion of alcohol and whether these EEG patterns vary in relation to different phases of the menstrual cycle. For this purpose, female participants consumed a moderate dose of alcohol or placebo during the follicular and early luteal phases of the menstrual cycle and then, 35 min after liquid ingestion, EEG activity was recorded during the performance of TOL. A deleterious effect of alcohol on TOL performance was potentiated in the follicular phase, related to a higher α1 relative power, probably as a result of the low progesterone levels characteristic of this menstrual phase. These data show the feasibility of examining the interaction of alcohol and menstrual cycle phases on cognitive performance by means of EEG recording, and contribute toward a better understanding of the brain mechanisms that underlie the cognitive changes that occur during the menstrual cycle under the effects of alcohol.

Vitamin D is considered an essential micronutrient for human health that is metabolized into a multifunctional secosteroid hormone. We can synthesize it in the skin through ultraviolet B (UVB) rays or acquire it from the diet. Its deficiency is a major global health problem that affects all ages and ethnic groups. Furthermore, dysregulation of vitamin D homeostasis has been associated with premature aging, driven by various cellular processes, including oxidative stress and cellular senescence. Various studies have shown that vitamin D can attenuate oxidative stress and delay cellular senescence, mainly by inducing the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and Klotho and improving mitochondrial homeostasis, proposing this vitamin as an excellent candidate for delaying aging. However, the mechanisms around these processes are not yet fully explored. Therefore, in this review, the effects of vitamin D on redox regulation and cellular senescence are discussed to propose new lines of research and clinical applications of vitamin D in the context of age-related diseases.

PURPOSE: Dexamethasone is the only drug that has consistently reduced mortality in patients with COVID-19, especially in patients needing oxygen or invasive mechanical ventilation. However, there is a growing concern about the relation of dexamethasone with the unprecedented rates of ICU-acquired respiratory tract infections (ICU-RTI) observed in patients with severe COVID-19. METHODS: This was a multicenter, prospective cohort study; conducted in ten countries in Latin America and Europe. We included patients older than 18 with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 requiring ICU admission. A multivariate logistic regression and propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was conducted to determine the relation between dexamethasone treatment and ICU-RTI. RESULTS: A total of 3777 patients were included. 2065 (54.7%) were treated with dexamethasone within the first 24 h of admission. After performing the PSM, patients treated with dexamethasone showed significantly higher proportions of VAP (282/1652 [17.1%] Vs. 218/1652 [13.2%], p = 0.014). Also, dexamethasone treatment was identified as an adjusted risk factor of ICU-RTI in the multivariate logistic regression model (OR 1.64; 95%CI: 1.37-1.97; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Patients treated with dexamethasone for severe COVID-19 had a higher risk of developing ICU-acquired respiratory tract infections after adjusting for days of invasive mechanical ventilation and ICU length of stay, suggesting a cautious use of this treatment.

Kinetics of permeation through connexin 43-EGFP hemichannels (Cx43-EGFP HCs) were evaluated in divalent cation-free solutions, which enhance HC open probability and thus, allow measurements during initial velocity. Three cations that become fluorescent upon binding to intracellular nucleic acids [ethidium (Etd), propidium (Prd) and 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI)] and Cx43-EGFP or Cx43 wild type HeLa cell transfectants (Cx43-EGFP- and Cx43-WT-HeLa cells, respectively) were used. Levels of Cx43-EGFP at the cell periphery and rate of dye uptake were directly related. The rate of uptake of each dye reached saturation consistent with a facilitated transport mechanism. Before saturation, the relation between rate of uptake and concentration of each dye was sigmoidal with Hill coefficients >1, indicating positive cooperativity of transport at low concentrations. The maximal rate of Etd uptake was not affected by the presence of DAPI and vice versa, but under each condition the apparent affinity constant of the main permeant molecule increased significantly consistent with competitive inhibition or competition for binding sites within the channel. Moreover, Cx43-EGFP and Cx43-WT HCs had similar permeability properties, indicating that EGFP bound to the C-terminal of Cx43 does not significantly alter the permeability of Cx43 HCs to positively charged molecules. Thus, competitive inhibition of permeation through hemichannels might contribute to cellular retention of essential molecules and/or uptake inhibition of toxic compounds.

The decision-making literature distinguishes one maximizing style from another satisficing decision-making style, but it is unknown whether these styles remain stable or are variable depending on the occasion. One way to approach it is to verify eventual generalization of these styles in behavior of people in different decision domains. Some incipient results with University students from the United States and Austria suggest that these styles would remain in three different domains. However, it is unknown if this is the case in adults, other cultures, or vital areas of great relevance, such as health and personal finances. The objective here is to identify if Chilean Latin American participants of different sex and age maintain their decision-making style in five different decision domains. The sample was 343 volunteers, 52.6% men, from two regions of central-southern Chile (Maule and Ñuble), aged between 20 and 90 years (M = 45.47; SD = 16.05), who answered the Maximization Tendency Scale, and 45 items corresponding to five different decision domains: health, life decision, finances, services and experiences, and consumer's good. An apparent coherence of decision-making style-maximizing and satisficing-was obtained in the five domains. The health domain stands out for being the one in which it is maximized and with greater internal homogeneity.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a significant burden on patients and caregivers. How this burden increases as disease progresses has not been well researched. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of caregiver burden and quality of life with Alzheimer's disease severity and disease progression in community-dwelling patients in Germany, Spain, and the UK. METHODS: This was a prospective observational longitudinal study of mild-to-moderate AD patients (assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination, MMSE), and their caregivers. The humanistic burden was assessed using these instruments: [Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity (RAPA), EuroQoL-5-Dimension Level (EQ-5D-5L)] and caregiver-reported [Dependence Scale (DS), EQ-5D-5L, Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI)]. Caregiver-reported healthcare resource use was assessed using the Resource Use in Dementia (RUD) and ad-hoc questions. RESULTS: Of 616 patients recruited, 338 and 99 were followed-up at 12 and 18 months, respectively. The caregiver-reported EQ-5D-5L scores of patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) showed a negative trend over time (baseline: 0.76; 18 months: 0.67) while patient-reported HRQoL remained at 0.85. DS scores tended to worsen. Disease progression was an independent predictor of HRQoL and increased dependence.Mean ZBI score increased over time reflecting an increase in caregiver burden; MMSE being an independent predictor for caregiver burden. Patient resource utilization and caregiver time for caregiving tended to increase over time. CONCLUSION: We found significant association between disease progression and caregiver and patient burden. Independently, both disease-specific outcomes and disease burden measures increased over time, but as disease progresses, we also found incremental burden associated with it.
RESUMO
The end of 2019 was marked by the emergence of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Our problem is centered in the post operative follow up of those patients who underwent an elective procedure immediately before the isolation and those who require an emergency surgery. We outline the measures we have taken to reduce the possibility of spread of the virus.

The world's elderly population is growing, and in Chile they represent 16.2% of the total population. In Chile, old age is marked by retirement, with a dramatic decrease in income that brings precariousness. Older adults are economically, socially, and psychologically vulnerable populations. This condition increases their likelihood of disengaging from their usual social environment, facilitating their isolation, sadness, and discomfort. From the perspective of social identity, well-being (WB) can be explained by two principles: social groups' importance for health and people's psychological identification with those groups. This study analyzes the relationships between belonging to the neighborhood and extra-neighborhood groups and neighborhood social identification with WB. Urban or rural location and gender are measured, and the sample is 1,475 older Chilean adults of both sexes. The results show that the majority are not members of social groups (52%), and the remaining 48% are members of one or two groups or organizations (42.65%). Only 4.47% belong to three groups or organizations. Those who belong to groups obtain higher scores, emotional-mental WB, and positive emotions than older adults who do not belong to any organization. Urban and rural older adults have the same level of WB. Membership in close social organizations (neighborhood councils) or distant ones (clubs for the elderly and religious groups) causes different WB associations. Membership in neighborhood councils reduces gender differences in self-assessment of health. This result supports the idea that participation in heterogeneous groups with a shared sense of belonging to the neighborhood is associated with higher WB and lower perceived loneliness. Social identification with the neighborhood, rather than belonging to the group, had the most widespread impact on WB and health indicators. The variable social identification with the neighborhood was consistently associated with indicators of hedonic WB.
