RESUMO

Chiral organic molecules offer a promising platform for exploring circularly polarized lasing, which, however, faces a great challenge that the spatial separation of molecular chiral and luminescent centers limits chiroptical activity. Here we develop a helically chiral supramolecular system with completely overlapped chiral and luminescent units for realizing high-performance circularly polarized lasing. Adaptive helical chirality is obtained by incorporating chiral agents into organic microcrystals. Benefiting from the efficient coupling of stimulated emission with the adaptive helical chirality, the supramolecular microcrystals enable high-performance circularly polarized lasing emission with dissymmetry factors up to ~ 0.7. This work opens up the way to rational design of chiral organic materials for circularly polarized lasing.

RESUMO

We report the monolithic fabrication of twin microtube cavities by a nanomembrane origami method for achieving collective coupling of 3D confined optical modes. Owing to the well-aligned twin geometries, two sets of 3D confined optical modes in twin microtubes are spectrally and spatially matched, by which both the fundamental and higher-order axial modes are respectively coupled with each other. Multiple groups of the coupling modes provide multiple effective channels for energy exchange between coupled microcavities illustrated by the measured spatial optical field distributions. The spectral anticrossing and changing-over features of each group of coupled modes are revealed in experiments and calculations, indicating the occurrence of strong coupling. In addition, the simulated 3D mode profiles of twin microcavities confirm the collective strong coupling behavior, which shows good agreement with experiments. The collective coupling of 3D confined resonant modes promises broad applications in multichannel optical signal processing, nanophotonics, and 3D non-Hermitian systems.

RESUMO

Stimulated Raman scattering offers an alternative strategy to explore continuous-wave (c.w.) organic lasers, which, however, still suffers from the limitation of inadequate Raman gain in organic material systems. Here we propose a metal-linking approach to enhance the Raman gain of organic molecules. Self-assembled microcrystals of the metal linked organic dimers exhibit large Raman gain, therefore allowing for c.w. Raman lasing. Furthermore, broadband tunable Raman lasing is achieved in the organic dimer microcrystals by adjusting excitation wavelengths. This work advances the understanding of Raman gain in organic molecules, paving a way for the design of c.w. organic lasers.

RESUMO

Manipulating photons in artificially structured materials is highly desired in modern photonic technology. Nontrivial topological structures are rapidly emerging as a state-of-art platform for achieving unprecedented fascinating phenomena of photon manipulation. However, the current studies mainly focus on planar structures, and the fabrication of photonic microstructures with specific topological geometric features still remains a great challenge. Extending the topological photonics to 3D microarchitectures is expected to enrich the photon manipulation capabilities and further advance the topological photonic devices. Here, a femtosecond laser direct writing technique is employed to fabricate 3D topological Möbius microring resonators from dye-doped polymer. The high-quality-factor Möbius microring resonator supports a unique spin-orbit coupled lasing at very low threshold. Due to the spin-orbit coupling induced geometric/Berry phase, the Möbius microrings, in striking contrast with ordinary microrings, output laser signals with all polarization states. The manipulation of miniaturized coherent light sources in the fabricated Möbius microrings represents a significant step forward toward 3D topological photonics that offers a novel design philosophy for functional photonic and optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Efficient radiative recombination is essential for perovskite luminescence, but the intrinsic radiative recombination rate as a basic material property is challenging to tailor. Here we report an interfacial chemistry strategy to dramatically increase the radiative recombination rate of perovskites. By coating aluminum oxide on the lead halide perovskite, lead-oxygen bonds are formed at the perovskite-oxide interface, producing the perovskite surface states with a large exciton binding energy and a high localized density of electronic state. The oxide-bonded perovskite exhibits a ≈500 fold enhanced photoluminescence with a ≈10 fold reduced lifetime, indicating an unprecedented ≈5000 fold increase in the radiative recombination rate. The enormously enhanced radiative recombination promises to significantly promote the perovskite optoelectronic performance.

RESUMO

Imperceptible electronics will make next-generation healthcare and biomedical systems thinner, lighter, and more flexible. While other components are thoroughly investigated, imperceptible energy storage devices lag behind because the decrease of thickness impairs the area-specific energy density. Imperceptible supercapacitors with high area-specific capacitance based on reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline (RGO/PANI) composite electrodes and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/H2 SO4 gel electrolyte are reported. Two strategies to realize a supercapacitor with a total device thickness of 5 µm-including substrate, electrode, and electrolyte-and an area-specific capacitance of 36 mF cm-2 simultaneously are implemented. First, the void volume of the RGO/PANI electrodes through mechanical compression is reduced, which decreases the thickness by 83% while retaining 89% of the capacitance. Second, the PVA-to-H2 SO4 mass ratio is decreased to 1:4.5, which improves the ion conductivity by 5000% compared to the commonly used PVA/H2 SO4 gel. Both advantages enable a 2 µm-thick gel electrolyte for planar interdigital supercapacitors. The impressive electromechanical stability of the imperceptible supercapacitors by wrinkling the substrate to produce folds with radii of 6 µm or less is demonstrated. The supercapacitors will be meaningful energy storage modules for future self-powered imperceptible electronics.

RESUMO

METHODS: Ovalbumin was used to induce allergic asthma following administration of YFP for one week in mice, to collect the lung tissues, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BLFA), and feces. The pathological state, tight-junction proteins, inflammatory and oxidative stress-associated biomarkers, and TLRs/NF-κB signaling pathway of the lung tissues were evaluated by HE staining, immunofluorescence, ELISA, and WB, separately. RT-PCR was used to test oxidative stress-associated genes. Leukocyte counts of BLFA and intestinal microbiota were also analyzed using a hemocytometer and 16S rDNA-sequencing, separately. RESULT: YFP ameliorated the lung injury of the mouse asthma model by inhibiting peribronchial and perivascular infiltrations of eosinophils and increasing tight-junction protein expression. YFP inhibited the decrease in the number of BALF leukocytes and expression of inflammatory-related genes and reversed OVA-induced TLRs/NF-κB signaling pathway activation. YFP ameliorated the level of oxidative stress in the lung of the mouse asthma model by inhibiting MDA and promoting the protein level of GSH-PX, SOD, CAT, and oxidative-related genes. ATG5, Beclin1, and LC3BII/I were significantly upregulated in asthma mice, which were greatly suppressed by the introduction of YFP, indicating that YFP ameliorated the autophagy in the lung of the mouse asthma model. Lastly, the distribution of bacterial species was slightly changed by YFP in asthma mice, with a significant difference in the relative abundance of 6 major bacterial species between the asthma and YFP groups. CONCLUSION: Our research showed that YFP might exert antiasthmatic effects by inhibiting airway allergic inflammation and oxidative stress level through suppressing autophagy.

RESUMO

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging kind of laser material, yet they remain a challenge in the controlled fabrication of crystal nanostructures with desired morphology for tuning their optical microcavities. Herein, the shape-engineering of pure MOF microlasers was demonstrated based on the coordination-mode-tailored method. The one-dimensional (1D) microwires and 2D microplates were selectively fabricated through changing the HCl concentration to tailor the coordination modes. Both the single-crystalline microwires and microplates with strong optical confinement functioned as low-threshold MOF microlasers. Moreover, distinct lasing behaviors of 1D and 2D MOF microcrystals confirm a typical shape-dependent microcavity effect: 1D microwires serve as Fabry-Pérot (FP) resonators, and 2D microplates lead to the whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities. These results provide a special pathway for the exploitation of MOF-based micro/nanolasers with on-demand functions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study is to describe the blood lipid levels of patients diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and to analyze the correlation between blood lipid levels and the prognosis of COVID-19 patients. METHODS: In the clinical retrospective analysis, a total of 228 adults infected with COVID-19 were enrolled between January 17, 2020 and March 14, 2020, in Changsha, China. One thousand one hundred and forty healthy participants with matched age and gender were used as control. Median with interquartile range and Mann-Whitney test were adopted to describe and analyze clinical data. The Kaplan-Meier (KM) curve and Cox regression analysis were used to analyze the correlation between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and the severity of COVID-19. RESULTS: Compared with control, COVID-19 patients showed significantly lower levels of total cholesterol (TC) [median, 3.76 vs 4.65 mmol/L, P = 0.031], triglyceride [median, 1.08 vs 1.21 mmol/L, P <  0.001], low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) [median, 2.63 vs 2.83 mmol/L, P <  0.001], and HDL-C [median, 0.78 vs 1.37 mmol/L, P <  0.001], while compared with non-severe patients, severe COVID-19 patients only presented lower levels of HDL-C [median, 0.69 vs 0.79 mmol/L, P = 0.032]. In comparison with patients with high HDL-C, patients with low HDL-C showed a higher proportion of male (69.57% vs 45.60%, P = 0.004), higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) (median, 27.83 vs 12.56 mg/L, P <  0.001) and higher proportion of severe events (36.96% vs 14.84%, P = 0.001). Moreover, patients with low HDL-C at admission showed a higher risk of developing severe events compared with those with high HDL-C (Log Rank P = 0.009). After adjusting for age, gender and underlying diseases, they still had elevated possibility of developing severe cases than those with high HDL-C (HR 2.827, 95% CI 1.190-6.714, P = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: HDL-C level was lower in COVID-19 adult patients, and low HDL-C in COVID-19 patients was correlated with a higher risk of developing severe events.

RESUMO

Miniaturized lasers with high spectral purity and wide wavelength tunability are crucial for various photonic applications. Here we propose a strategy to realize broadband-tunable single-mode lasing based on a photoisomerization-activated intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) process in coupled polymer microdisk cavities. The photoisomerizable molecules doped in the polymer microdisks can be quantitatively transformed into a kind of laser dye with strong ICT character by photoexcitation. The gain region was tailored over a wide range through the self-modulation of the optically activated ICT isomers. Meanwhile, the resonant modes shifted with the photoisomerization because of a change in the effective refractive index of the polymer microdisk cavity. Based on the synergetic modulation of the optical gain and microcavity, we realized the broadband tuning of the single-mode laser. These results offer a promising route to fabricate broadband-tunable microlasers towards practical photonic integrations.

RESUMO

Thermally activated delayed-fluorescent (TADF) materials are anticipated to overcome triplet-related losses towards electrically driven organic lasers. Thus far, contributions from triplets to lasing have not yet been experimentally demonstrated owing to the limited knowledge about the excited-state processes. Herein, we experimentally achieve reverse intersystem crossing (RISC)-boosted lasing in organic microspheres with uniformly dispersed TADF emitters. In these materials, triplets are continuously converted to radiative singlets through RISC, giving rise to reduced losses in stimulated emission. The involvement of regenerated singlets in population inversion results in a thermally activated lasing; that is, the lasing intensity increases with increasing temperature, accompanied by accelerated depletion of the excited-state population. Benefiting from the suppression of triplet accumulations by RISC processes, a high-repetition-rate microlaser was achieved.

RESUMO

In this work, we demonstrate a stimulated emission-controlled photonic transistor on a single organic triblock nanowire composed of alternate energy donor and acceptor. The population of acceptor excitons was engineered by energy transfer to achieve enhanced fluorescence, which was further amplified by the stimulated emission of the donor and the optical feedback in the nanowire microcavities, yielding a remarkable nonlinear amplification of the acceptor emission. On this basis, a prototype of photonic transistor with high nonlinear gain at very low pump energy was achieved. The results will provide a useful enlightenment for the rational design of novel all-optical switches with desired performances.

RESUMO

Wavelength switchable micro/nanoscale laser is essential to construct various ultracompact photonic devices. However, traditional semiconductors as the gain media generally provide only monochromatic laser output due to their continuous energy band structures. For luminescent conjugated molecules, the broad emission band usually contains a series of vibronic peaks, which is very helpful for extending the lasing spectrum to several different wavelengths. Here we propose a novel strategy to realize wavelength switchable lasers based on the controlled competition of dual-wavelength vibronic lasing in single-component organic microcrystals. The vibrationally structured fluorescence property of the single-crystal organic microdisks brings dual-wavelength lasing at different vibronic bands. Their relative optical gain intensity was modulated by controlling the population on the certain vibronic level of the ground state with varied temperature, which consequently enabled the reversible switching of the dual-wavelength vibronic lasing. The results point out a promising route to the rational design of miniaturized lasers and other photonic elements with desired performances.

RESUMO

The very broad emission bands of organic semiconductor materials are, in theory, suitable for achieving versatile solid-state lasers; however, most of organic materials only lase at short wavelength corresponding to the 0-1 transition governed by the Franck-Condon (FC) principle. A strategy is developed to overcome the limit of FC principle for tailoring the output of microlasers over a wide range based on the controlled vibronic emission of organic materials at microcrystal state. For the first time, the output wavelength of organic lasers is tailored across all vibronic (0-1, 0-2, 0-3, and even 0-4) bands spanning the entire emission spectrum.

RESUMO

Wavelength tunable micro/nanolasers are indispensable components for various photonic devices. Here, we report broadband tunable microlasers built by incorporating a highly polarized organic intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) compound with a supramolecular host. The spatial confinement of the ICT dye generates an optimized energy level system that favors controlled population distribution between the locally excited (LE) state and the twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) state, which is beneficial for significantly broadening the tailorable gain region. As a result, we realized a wide tuning of lasing wavelength in the organic supramolecular microcrystals based on temperature-controlled population transfer from the LE to TICT state. The results will provide a useful enlightenment for the rational design of miniaturized lasers with desired performances.

RESUMO

We report a case of H7N9 avian influenza pneumonia in a pregnant woman who developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) managed with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). A 29-year-old, 27 week pregnant woman developed rapidly progressive pneumonia with bilateral infiltrates on chest x-ray and was confirmed to have influenza A (H7N9) infection. Her condition deteriorated and she developed ARDS which was managed with veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) and treated with antimicrobials. Her clinical symptoms and oxygenation gradually improved and the ECMO was discontinued on the 19t day. Unfortunately, she suddenly died a few days later, due to a presumed pulmonary embolism. Based on our experience, ECMO may be useful to manage pneumonia due to H7N9 avian influenza and ARDS in pregnant women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite decades of extensive studies, the morbidity and mortality for acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) remained high. Particularly, biomarkers essential for its early diagnosis and prognosis are lacking. METHODS: Recent studies suggest that alveolar macrophages (AMs) at the exudative phase of ALI/ARDS initiate, amplify and perpetuate inflammatory responses, while they resolve inflammation in the recovery phase to prevent further tissue injury and perpetuated inflammation in the lung. Therefore, proteins relevant to this functional switch could be valuable biomarkers for ALI/ARDS diagnosis and prognosis. We thus conducted comparative analysis of the AM proteome to assess its dynamic proteomic changes during ALI/ARDS progression and recovery. RESULTS: 135 proteins were characterized to be differentially expressed between AMs at the exudative and recovery phase. MALDI-TOF-MS and peptide mass fingerprint (PMF) analysis characterized 27 informative proteins, in which 17 proteins were found with a marked increase at the recovery phase, while the rest of 10 proteins were manifested by the significantly higher levels of expression at the exudative phase. CONCLUSIONS: Given the role of above identified proteins played in the regulation of inflammatory responses, cell skeleton organization, oxidative stress, apoptosis and metabolism, they have the potential to serve as biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis in the setting of patients with ALI/ARDS.

RESUMO

Sepsis is the host immune imbalance following infection and leads to organ dysfunction, with highly complicated pathophysiology. To date, sepsis still lacks effective therapies with high mortality rates. Recently, numerous studies have highlighted the potential of NLRP3 inflammasome as a therapeutic target during sepsis. NLRP3 inflammasome is a protein complex that could induce the activation of caspase-1 and the following release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1ß and IL-18. It was demonstrated that NLRP3 inflammasome was involved in the development and progression of sepsis. In contrast, inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation could mitigate the inflammatory response, protect organ function, and improve outcomes and mortality. This paper illustrated the activation pathways of the NLRP3 inflammasome and its possible molecular mechanisms in the pathophysiology of sepsis. Meanwhile, the beneficial effects of inhibiting NLRP3 activation in sepsis-related organ damage were also presented. In addition, the diverse role of NLRP3 inflammasome in bacterial clearance was addressed. Of note, several herbal extracts targeting NLRP3 inflammasome in the treatment of sepsis were emphasized. We hope that this paper could provide a basis for further drug research targeting NLRP3 inflammasome.

RESUMO

Synthetic photonic materials exploiting the quantum concept of parity-time (PT) symmetry lead to an emerging photonic paradigm-non-Hermitian photonics, which is revolutionizing the photonic sciences. The non-Hermitian photonics dealing with the interplay between gain and loss in PT synthetic photonic material systems offers a versatile platform for advancing microlaser technology. However, current PT-symmetric microcavity laser systems only manipulate imaginary parts of the refractive indices, suffering from limited laser spectral bandwidth. Here, an organic composite material system is proposed to synthesize reconfigurable PT-symmetric microcavities with controllable complex refractive indices for realizing tunable single-mode laser outputs. A grayscale electron-beam direct-writing technique is elaborately designed to process laser dye-doped polymer films in one single step into microdisk cavities with periodic gain and loss distribution, which enables thresholdless PT-symmetry breaking and single-mode laser operation. Furthermore, organic photoisomerizable compounds are introduced to reconfigure the PT-symmetric systems in real-time by tailoring the real refractive index of the polymer microresonators, allowing for a dynamically and continuously tunable single-mode laser output. This work fundamentally enhances the PT-symmetric photonic systems for innovative design of synthetic photonic materials and architectures.
