The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a global pandemic, resulting in considerable morbidity and mortality. Tocilizumab, an inhibitor of IL-6, has been widely repurposed as a treatment of severely ill patients without robust evidence supporting its use. In this study, we aimed to systematically describe the effectiveness of treatment and prevention of the cytokine storms in COVID-19 patients with tocilizumab. In this multicentered retrospective and observational cohort study, 65 patients with COVID-19 receiving tocilizumab and 130 not receiving tocilizumab were propensity score matched at a ratio of 2:1 based on age, sex, and comorbidities from January 20, 2020 to March 18, 2020 in Wuhan, China. After adjusting for confounding, the detected risk for in-hospital death was lower in the tocilizumab group versus nontocilizumab group (hazard ratio = 0.47; 95% confidence interval = 0.25-0.90; p = 0.023). Moreover, use of tocilizumab was associated with a lower risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome (odds ratio = 0.23; 95% confidence interval = 0.11-0.45; p < 0.0001). Furthermore, patients had heightened inflammation and more dysregulated immune cells before treatment, which might aggravate disease progression. After tocilizumab administration, abnormally elevated IL-6, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and activated partial thromboplastin time decreased. Tocilizumab may be of value in prolonging survival in patients with severe COVID-19, which provided a novel strategy for COVID-19-induced cytokine release syndrome. Our findings could inform bedside decisions until data from randomized, controlled clinical trials become available.

Intestinal fibrosis is a common complication of inflammatory bowel disease. There is still a lack of effective drugs for the prevention or treatment of intestinal fibrosis. Heat shock protein 47 (HSP47) plays a key role in the development of intestinal fibrosis. In this study we investigated the therapeutic potential and underlying mechanisms of fraxinellone, a degraded limonoid isolated from the root bark of Dictamnus dasycarpus, in the treatment of intestinal fibrosis. Intestinal fibrosis was induced in mice by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) treatment. DDS-treated mice were administered fraxinellone (7.5, 15, 30 mg·kg-1·d-1, i.g.) for 45 days. We showed that fraxinellone administration dose-dependently alleviated DSS-induced intestinal impairments, and reduced the production of intestinal fibrosis biomarkers such as α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), collagen I, hydroxyproline, fibronectin and laminin, and cytokines such as TGF-ß, TNF-α and IL-ß. We then established in vitro intestinal fibrosis cell models in SW480 and HT-29 cells, and demonstrated that treatment with fraxinellone (3, 10, 30 µM) significantly relieved TGF-ß-induced fibrosis responses by inhibiting the TGF-ß/Smad2/3 signaling pathway. Molecular docking suggested that the fraxinellone might disrupt the interaction between HSP47 and collagen, which was confirmed by coimmunoprecipitation experiments. SPR analysis showed that fraxinellone had a high affinity for HSP47 with a Kd value of 3.542 × 10-5 M. This study provides a new example of HSP47-collagen intervention by a natural compound and has important implications for the clinical treatment of inflammation-induced issue fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Diagnostics to identify tuberculosis infection are limited. We aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy and safety of ESAT6-CFP10 (EC) skin test for tuberculosis infection in Chinese adults. METHODS: We conducted 2 randomized, parallel-group clinical trials in healthy participants and tuberculosis patients. All participants were tested with the T-SPOT.TB test, then received an EC skin test and tuberculin skin test (TST). The diameter of skin indurations and/or redness at injection sites were measured at different time periods. A bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) model was established to assess the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection using an EC skin test. RESULTS: In total, 777 healthy participants and 96 tuberculosis patients were allocated to receive EC skin test at 1.0 µg/0.1 mL or 0.5 µg/0.1 mL. The area under the curve was 0.95 (95% confidence interval [CI], .91-.97) for the EC skin test at 1.0 µg/0.1 mL at 24-72 hours. Compared with the T-SPOT.TB test, the EC skin test demonstrated similar sensitivity (87.5, 95% CI, 77.8-97.2 vs 86.5, 95% CI, 79.5-93.4) and specificity (98.9, 95% CI, 96.0-99.9 vs 96.1, 95% CI, 93.5-97.8). Among BCG vaccinated participants, the EC skin test had high consistency with the T-SPOT.TB test (96.3, 95% CI, 92.0-100.0). No serious adverse events related to the EC skin test were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The EC skin test demonstrated both high specificity and sensitivity at a dose of 1.0 µg/0.1 mL, comparable to the T-SPOT.TB test. The diagnostic accuracy of the EC skin test was not impacted by BCG vaccination. CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION: NCT02389322 and NCT02336542.

Atherosclerosis, accompanied by inflammation and metabolic disorders, is the primary cause of clinical cardiovascular death. In recent years, unhealthy lifestyles (e.g., sedentary lifestyles) have contributed to a worldwide epidemic of atherosclerosis. Exercise is a known treatment of atherosclerosis, but the precise mechanisms are still unknown. Here, we show that 12 weeks of regular exercise training on a treadmill significantly decreased lipid accumulation and foam cell formation in ApoE-/- mice fed with a Western diet, which plays a critical role in the process of atherosclerosis. This was associated with an increase in ß-hydroxybutyric acid (BHB) levels in the serum. We provide evidence that BHB treatment in vivo or in vitro increases the protein levels of cholesterol transporters, including ABCA1, ABCG1, and SR-BI, and is capable of reducing lipid accumulation. It also ameliorated autophagy in macrophages and atherosclerosis plaques, which play an important role in the step of cholesterol efflux. Altogether, an increase in serum BHB levels after regular exercise is an important mechanism of exercise inhibiting the development of atherosclerosis. This provides a novel treatment for atherosclerotic patients who are unable to undertake regular exercise for whatever reason. They will gain a benefit from receiving additional BHB.

BACKGROUND: Since December, 2019, Wuhan, China, has experienced an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 have been reported but risk factors for mortality and a detailed clinical course of illness, including viral shedding, have not been well described. METHODS: In this retrospective, multicentre cohort study, we included all adult inpatients (≥18 years old) with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from Jinyintan Hospital and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital (Wuhan, China) who had been discharged or had died by Jan 31, 2020. Demographic, clinical, treatment, and laboratory data, including serial samples for viral RNA detection, were extracted from electronic medical records and compared between survivors and non-survivors. We used univariable and multivariable logistic regression methods to explore the risk factors associated with in-hospital death. FINDINGS: 191 patients (135 from Jinyintan Hospital and 56 from Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital) were included in this study, of whom 137 were discharged and 54 died in hospital. 91 (48%) patients had a comorbidity, with hypertension being the most common (58 [30%] patients), followed by diabetes (36 [19%] patients) and coronary heart disease (15 [8%] patients). Multivariable regression showed increasing odds of in-hospital death associated with older age (odds ratio 1·10, 95% CI 1·03-1·17, per year increase; p=0·0043), higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score (5·65, 2·61-12·23; p<0·0001), and d-dimer greater than 1 µg/mL (18·42, 2·64-128·55; p=0·0033) on admission. Median duration of viral shedding was 20·0 days (IQR 17·0-24·0) in survivors, but SARS-CoV-2 was detectable until death in non-survivors. The longest observed duration of viral shedding in survivors was 37 days. INTERPRETATION: The potential risk factors of older age, high SOFA score, and d-dimer greater than 1 µg/mL could help clinicians to identify patients with poor prognosis at an early stage. Prolonged viral shedding provides the rationale for a strategy of isolation of infected patients and optimal antiviral interventions in the future. BACKGROUND: No specific antiviral drug has been proven effective for treatment of patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Remdesivir (GS-5734), a nucleoside analogue prodrug, has inhibitory effects on pathogenic animal and human coronaviruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in vitro, and inhibits Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV-1, and SARS-CoV-2 replication in animal models. METHODS: We did a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial at ten hospitals in Hubei, China. Eligible patients were adults (aged ≥18 years) admitted to hospital with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, with an interval from symptom onset to enrolment of 12 days or less, oxygen saturation of 94% or less on room air or a ratio of arterial oxygen partial pressure to fractional inspired oxygen of 300 mm Hg or less, and radiologically confirmed pneumonia. Patients were randomly assigned in a 2:1 ratio to intravenous remdesivir (200 mg on day 1 followed by 100 mg on days 2-10 in single daily infusions) or the same volume of placebo infusions for 10 days. Patients were permitted concomitant use of lopinavir-ritonavir, interferons, and corticosteroids. The primary endpoint was time to clinical improvement up to day 28, defined as the time (in days) from randomisation to the point of a decline of two levels on a six-point ordinal scale of clinical status (from 1=discharged to 6=death) or discharged alive from hospital, whichever came first. Primary analysis was done in the intention-to-treat (ITT) population and safety analysis was done in all patients who started their assigned treatment. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04257656. FINDINGS: Between Feb 6, 2020, and March 12, 2020, 237 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to a treatment group (158 to remdesivir and 79 to placebo); one patient in the placebo group who withdrew after randomisation was not included in the ITT population. Remdesivir use was not associated with a difference in time to clinical improvement (hazard ratio 1·23 [95% CI 0·87-1·75]). Although not statistically significant, patients receiving remdesivir had a numerically faster time to clinical improvement than those receiving placebo among patients with symptom duration of 10 days or less (hazard ratio 1·52 [0·95-2·43]). Adverse events were reported in 102 (66%) of 155 remdesivir recipients versus 50 (64%) of 78 placebo recipients. Remdesivir was stopped early because of adverse events in 18 (12%) patients versus four (5%) patients who stopped placebo early. INTERPRETATION: In this study of adult patients admitted to hospital for severe COVID-19, remdesivir was not associated with statistically significant clinical benefits. However, the numerical reduction in time to clinical improvement in those treated earlier requires confirmation in larger studies. The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with the death of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.All clinical and laboratory parameters were collected prospectively from a cohort of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia who were hospitalised to Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital (Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China) between 25 December 2019 and 7 February 2020. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age ≥65 years (OR 3.765, 95% CI 1.146­17.394; p=0.023), pre-existing concurrent cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases (OR 2.464, 95% CI 0.755­8.044; p=0.007), CD3+CD8+ T-cells ≤75 cells·µL−1 (OR 3.982, 95% CI 1.132­14.006; p<0.001) and cardiac troponin I ≥0.05 ng·mL−1 (OR 4.077, 95% CI 1.166­14.253; p<0.001) were associated with an increase in risk of mortality from COVID-19 pneumonia." has been corrected to: "Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age ≥65 years (OR 3.765, 95% CI 1.201−11.803; p=0.023), pre-existing concurrent cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases (OR 2.464, 95% CI 1.279−4.747; p=0.007), CD3+CD8+ T-cells ≤75 cells·µL−1 (OR 3.982, 95% CI 1.761­9.004; p<0.001) and cardiac troponin I ≥0.05 ng·mL−1 (OR 4.077, 95% CI 1.778­9.349; p<0.001) were associated with an increase in risk of mortality from COVID-19 pneumonia. In a sex-, age- and comorbid illness-matched case-control study, CD3+CD8+ T-cells ≤75 cells·µL-1 and cardiac troponin I ≥0.05 ng·mL-1 remained as predictors for high mortality from COVID-19 pneumonia.We identified four risk factors: age ≥65 years, pre-existing concurrent cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases, CD3+CD8+ T-cells ≤75 cells·µL-1 and cardiac troponin I ≥0.05 ng·mL-1 The latter two factors, especially, were predictors for mortality of COVID-19 pneumonia patients.

Although emerging data demonstrated mortality of young COVID-19 patients, no data have reported the risk factors of mortality for these young patients, and whether obesity is a risk for young COVID-19 patients remains unknown. We conducted a retrospective study including 13 young patients who died of COVID-19 and 40 matched survivors. Logistic regression was employed to characterize the risk factors of mortality in young obese COVID-19 patients. Most of the young deceased COVID-19 patients were mild cases at the time of admission, but the disease progressed rapidly featured by a higher severity of patchy shadows (100.00% vs 48.70%; P = .006), pleural thickening (61.50% vs 12.80%; P = .012), and mild pericardial effusion (76.90% vs 0.00%; P < .001). Most importantly, the deceased patients manifested higher body mass index (odds ratio [OR] = 1.354; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.075-1.704; P = .010), inflammation-related index C-reactive protein (OR = 1.014; 95% CI = 1.003-1.025; P = .014), cardiac injury biomarker hs-cTnI (OR = 1.420; 95% CI = 1.112-1.814; P = .005), and increased coagulation activity biomarker D-dimer (OR = 418.7; P = .047), as compared with that of survivors. Our data support that obesity could be a risk factor associated with high mortality in young COVID-19 patients, whereas aggravated inflammatory response, enhanced cardiac injury, and increased coagulation activity are likely to be the mechanisms contributing to the high mortality.

Clinical data have shown that pulmonary interstitial fibrosis is likely to occur in the later stages of viral pneumonia. While viral infections are thought to cause chronic pulmonary interstitial inflammation and pulmonary fibrosis, it remains unclear if they promote pulmonary fibrosis by epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In this study, human epithelial cell line A549 has been used to model the infection of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Their differences were compared and the possible infection mechanisms analyzed by randomly assigning cells to one of five treatments. Exposure of the LMP1 is thought to be the key gene during EBV-induced EMT in the A549 cells. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay analysis revealed that the EBV infection was associated with the induction of a number of cytokines (interleukin-8 [IL-8], IL-13, tumor necrosis factor-α, and transforming growth factor-ß) and dexamethasone (DXM) could significantly prevent the phenotypic changes, and partly the mechanisms related with the IL-13 pathway. Surprisingly, different results were seen with the RSV infection as the A549 cells still displayed an epithelial morphology but the levels of E-cadherin, α-SMA, vimentin, and fibronectin did not change. This is the first study demonstrating the different reactions induced by different viruses, and the protective effects of DXM on the EBV-induced EMT in the A549 cells by partially inhibiting the IL-13 pathway. These findings suggest a novel mechanism, by which DXM or anti-IL-13 may delay the progression of pulmonary fibrosis by preventing the progress of EBV-induced EMT.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a risky cardiovascular disease with limited treatment options. Various pan or type-selective histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are reportedly atheroprotective against atherosclerosis (AS); however, the key effectors and the main cellular processes that mediate the protective effects remain poorly defined. Here, we report that PPARγ (Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma), a transcription factor actively involved in lipid metabolism with strong tissue protective and anti-inflammation properties, is a critical mediator of the anti-AS effects by HDAC inhibition. We showed that a well-known pan-HDAC inhibitor TSA (Trichostatin A) reduced foam cell formation of macrophages that is accompanied by a marked elevation of PPARγ and its downstream cholesterol efflux transporter ABCA1 (ATP-binding membrane cassette transport protein A1) and ABCG1. In an AS model of ApoE-/- mice fed on high-fat diet, TSA treatment alleviated AS lesions, similarly increased PPARγ and the downstream cholesterol transporters and mitigated the induction of inflammatory cytokine TNFα and IL-1ß. Exploring the potential cause of PPARγ elevation revealed that TSA induced the acetylation of C/EBPα (CCAAT enhancer binding protein alpha), the upstream regulator of PPARγ, through which it increased PPARγ transactivation. More importantly, we generated a strain of PPARγ/ApoE double knockout mice and demonstrated that lack of PPARγ abrogated the protective effects of TSA on foam cell formation of peritoneal macrophages and the AS pathogenesis. Taken together, these results unravel that C/EBPα and PPARγ are the HDAC-sensitive components of an epigenetic signaling pathway mediating foam cell formation and AS development, and suggest that targeting C/EBPα/PPARγ axis by HDAC inhibitors possesses therapeutic potentials in retarding the progression of AS and the related cardiovascular diseases.

Vascular invasion is considered as the critical risk factor of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To reveal the molecular mechanisms underlying macrovascular invasion (MaVI) in HCC, we performed an iTRAQ based proteomic study to identify notably dysregulated proteins from eight HCC patients with differential vascular invasion and further confirmed them in the other 53 HCC patients. Forty-seven proteins were found significantly down-regulated in HCC with MaVI. More importantly, 30 of them were not changed in HCC without MaVI. Gene ontology analysis of these 47 proteins shows the top three enriched biological processes are urea cycle, gluconeogenesis, and arginine biosynthetic process. We validated nine remarkably dysregulated candidates in HCC patients with MaVI by Western blot including eight down-regulated proteins (CPS1, ASS1, ASL, ARG1, BHMT, DMGDH, Annexin A6, and CES1) and one up-regulated protein (CKAP4). Furthermore, dysregulation of CPS1, ASL, and ARG1, key enzymes involved in urea cycle, together with Annexin A6 and CES1, major proteins in regulating cholesterol homeostasis and fatty acid ester metabolism, was verified using immunohistochemical staining. The significant down-regulation of urea cycle generates clinically relevant proteomic signature in HCC patients with macrovascular invasion, which may provide possible insights into the molecular mechanisms of metastasis and new therapeutic targets of HCC.

INTRODUCTION: Carbon monoxide (CO) released from CORM-2 has anti-inflammatory function, but the critical molecule mediating the inflammation inhibition has not been elucidated. Previous studies indicate that CORM-2 can activate Nrf2, a key transcription factor regulating host defense against oxidative stress and inflammation-related disorders. In this study we use Nrf2 knockout mice to determine the role of Nrf2 in mediating the CO anti-inflammatory action. METHODS: We compared CORM-2's inhibiting effect on pro-inflammatory cytokine expressions (TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 and iNOS) in primary peritoneal macrophages, mouse liver and brain tissues from Nrf2(+/+) and Nrf2(-/-) mice. We further assayed the inflammatory cell infiltration in both liver and brain tissues of the Nrf2(+/+) and Nrf2(-/-) mice. Finally, we examined CORM's influence on mouse mortality in a mouse sepsis model. RESULTS: Our results showed that CORM-2 dramatically inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in Nrf2(+/+) mice, but not in Nrf2(-/-) mice. Furthermore CORM-2 substantially decreased LPS-induced mouse mortality of Nrf2(+/+) mice, but not of Nrf2(-/-) mice. CONCLUSION: We conclude that Nrf2 is indispensable for CORM-2 inhibition of LPS-induced inflammation.

Inflammatory changes in the cerebral network are present in early mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative disease, Alzheimer disease (AD), and aging brain. We intended to verify that these are likely due to an activation of NADPH oxidase (NOX) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Apocynin (APO) an inhibitor of NOX is potential to ameliorate these changes. Rehmannia complex (Reh) a famous prescription in China and the triterpene acids (TTA) isolated from Reh may relieve the isoproterenol (ISO) induced chronic inflammation in the brain, compared with APO. Rats were administered with ISO for 10 days and astrocytes were incubated with ISO for 24 h. Changes in neural MMP (matrix metalloproteinase), Cx43, AQP4 (aquaporin 4), NFκB, IκBß, and p-PERK (PKB like kinase) were conducted and intervened with APO, Reh and TTA, in vivo and in vitro, respectively. An increased MDA and upregulated NOX subunit p47phox, ETA, PERK in association with abnormal MMP-2/9 and Cx40/43 were found in cerebral tissue of ISO-injected rats. Astrocytes incubated with ISO exhibited upregulated APQ4, IκBß, NFκB and p-PERK/PERK and downregulated Cx43. These were significantly abrogated by APO and Reh, in vivo, and APO and TTA in vitro. In conclusion, neural damages induced by ISO were characterized by inflammatory changes in cerebral tissue and astrocytes, which were blunted significantly by APO, Reh and TTA, respectively. Reh and TTA are potential in alleviating the early pathogenesis in neurodegenerative changes in AD in the clinical settings through suppressing NOX and ER stress in the brain.

Immobilized microbial technology has recently emerged as a prominent research focus for the remediation of heavy metal pollution because of its superior treatment efficiency, ease of operation, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. This study investigated the adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of Cd2+ solutions by Lactobacillus plantarum adsorbed immobilized on distiller's grains biochar (XIM) and Lactobacillus plantarum-encapsulated immobilized on distiller's grains biochar (BIM). The findings reveal that the maximum adsorption capacity and efficiency were achieved at a pH solution of 6.0. Specifically, at an adsorption equilibrium concentration of cadmium at 60 mg/L, XIM and BIM had adsorption capacities of 8.40 ± 0.30 mg/g and 12.23 ± 0.05 mg/g, respectively. BIM demonstrated noticeably greater adsorption capacities than XIM at various cadmium solution concentrations. A combination of isothermal adsorption modeling, kinetic modeling, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses showed that cadmium adsorption by XIM primarily involved physical adsorption and pore retention. In contrast, the adsorption mechanism of BIM was mainly attributed to the formation of Cd(CN)2 crystals.

BACKGROUND Refeeding syndrome (RFS) and starvation-associated injuries are significant complications in malnourished patients. Severe weight loss after obesity surgery is frequently associated with malnutrition, consequently increasing the likelihood of RFS and starvation-related injuries as postoperative complications. RFS and starvation-induced injury in a single patient has rarely been reported. In this paper, we present, for the first time, a case of hepatic injury attributed to both refeeding syndrome and starvation-induced hepatic injury in a malnourished woman following bariatric surgery. CASE REPORT A 27-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital for severe malnutrition after sleeve gastrectomy. Her body mass index (BMI) dropped from 37.2 kg/m² to 12.4 kg/m² 1 year after surgery. After nutritional supplementation, her liver enzymes levels increased significantly, with severe hypophosphatemia suggesting the development of RFS. During the calorie restriction treatment for RFS, the patient unexpectedly exhibited the recurrent increase of liver enzyme levels and severe reduction in body weight, albumin, and hemoglobin, which is considered to be caused by starvation-induced injury during the treatment of RFS. Following precise nutritional re-supplementation, her liver enzyme levels were dramatically decreased, with significant elevated hemoglobin and albumin levels at discharge and during the follow-up visit. CONCLUSIONS Chronic malnutrition and extreme weight loss can occur following bariatric surgery. Our report highlights the potential for RFS and starvation-related liver injuries as postoperative complications for high-risk patients after bariatric surgery. Liver injury can occur in both RFS and starvation-induced hepatitis. Nutrition initiation and supplementation should be carefully balanced in high-risk patients during nutritional treatments.

The spread of grape leaf diseases has a negative impact on the sustainable development of agriculture. Diseases induced by Uncinula necator significantly affect the quality of grapes. Bacillus biocontrol agents have been proven effective in disease management. However, limited research has been conducted on the impact of biocontrol agents on the assembly and potential functions of plant phyllosphere microbial communities. This study used high-throughput sequencing combined with bioinformatics analysis and culture omics technology for analysis. The results showed that biocontrol bacteria B. subtilis utilized in this study can significantly reduce the disease index of powdery mildew (p<0.05); concurrently, it exhibits a lower disease index compared to traditional fungicides. A comprehensive analysis has revealed that biocontrol bacteria have no significant impact on the diversity of phyllosphere fungi and bacteria, while fungicides can significantly reduce bacterial diversity. Additionally, biocontrol agents can increase the complexity of fungal networks and enhance the degree of modularity and stability of the bacterial network. The results also showed that the biocontrol agents, which contained a high amount of B. subtilis, were able to effectively colonize the grapevine phyllosphere, creating a microenvironment that significantly inhibits pathogenic bacteria on grape leaves while enhancing leaf photosynthetic capacity. In conclusion, biocontrol agents significantly reduce the grape powdery mildew disease index, promote a microenvironment conducive to symbiotic microorganisms and beneficial bacteria, and enhance plant photosynthetic capacity. These findings provide a basis for promoting biocontrol agents and offer valuable insights into sustainable agriculture development.
