RESUMO

The objective is to reflect on the existing articulation between Aaron Antonovsky's salutogenic theory and Health Promoting Universities, highlighting the challenges for the operationalization of health promotion actions in the Latin American university scenario in the contemporary world. The visible adherence of the ideas of the salutogenic theory to the guiding components of the Health Promoting Universities movement was identified, which has contributed to successful experiences around the world. Practices in the light of salutogenic theory can be considered effective strategies for improving the quality of life in the university setting; however, it is necessary for those involved to detach themselves so that the logic of acting based on a pathogenic process is broken. Furthermore, regional challenges in the Latin American reality must be understood and overcome with the support of public policies.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to investigate data from the scientific literature on patterns of illness due to occupational cancer in Brazil. An integrative literature review was conducted in July 2020 and reviewed in June 2021, with no time restriction, using the Health Science Descriptors "Neoplasms," "Occupational Risks," "Occupational Cancer," and keywords related, which were searched on the following databases: Latin American Literature in Health Sciences, SciELO, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. The search and selection flow followed that recommended by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Statement - 2020. Six manuscripts were selected, published from 1995 to 2019, which described occupational cancer affecting lung, oral cavity, pharynx and larynx, central nervous system, and skin. There was a time gap between the studies, and only the one involving lung cancer results on the most prevalent pattern of illness in the industrial sector, compared to the non-industrial. A shortage of scientific articles on patterns of illness was found. There was a predominance of scientific publications referring to occupational cancer illness related to the industrial sector compared to the number of publications directed to the primary and tertiary productive sectors. It is worth noting the constant need for research and epidemiological surveys to promote surveillance and protective actions aimed at occupational health.

OBJECTIVE: to cross-culturally adapt and assess the content validity evidence of the Cognitive Symptom Checklist-Work-21 for the Brazilian context. METHOD: a psychometric study of cross-cultural adaptation, covering the stages of translation, reconciliation, back-translation, intercultural equivalence assessment and content validity evidence analysis, considering Content Validity Ratio parameters in breast cancer survivors. RESULTS: the translations were equivalent to the original version. Colloquial expressions were modified, tense, verbal adjusted, and two items containing multiple commands were separated. The final version now contains 22 items, presenting semantic, conceptual, idiomatic and experimental equivalences. The pre-test indicated good understanding and ease in the response process. CONCLUSION: the final version was defined as "Lista de verificação de sintomas cognitivos relacionados ao trabalho - 22 itens", showing good linguistic equivalence and strong evidence of content validity in the Brazilian context.

RESUMO

Among healthcare workers, nurses are at exceptionally considerable risk for contracting COVID-19. Regardless of professionals' level of education, Brazilian nursing is one of the healthcare occupations shouldering the highest levels of responsibility and workload. Social support networks to health and nursing can be a strategy to reduce workload and stress and may contribute to implementing the activities and protecting workers' health. This study aimed to map and analyze social support networks at workplaces as informed by frontline nursing professionals working in healthcare units in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza, capitals of the States of Rio de Janeiro and Ceará, respectively. This observational and cross-sectional study used an online data collection instrument based on social network analysis methodology. We recruited 163 participants in two reference services for health professionals suspected or with COVID-19 symptoms. The research question was: "Which category or categories of health professionals have supported you or other colleagues the most in the event of diagnosis or suspicion of COVID-19 among nursing categories? Data were organized by nursing category and city and analyzed through social network analysis using Ucinet©, generating graphs and centrality metrics. Results point to the central relevance of nursing categories in the workplace social support in the pandemic, followed by other health professional categories.

RESUMO

During the COVID-19 pandemic, longstanding issues involving nursing work, which has always involved significant risks of illness and infection, were intensified. It is necessary to acknowledge the risks and nurses' perceptions about the risks qualitatively during the period of the health crisis. The aim of this study was to examine the health repercussions perceived by nursing workers in emergency services during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. This was a qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study. The settings of the study were emergency services with a national scope; the participants were nursing workers. Data were collected via face-to-face virtual calling interviews and analyzed via a content analysis technique, which was supported by IRAMUTEQ software. The formation of textual classes pointed in three thematic directions, from which three categories emerged: nursing workers' exposure, due to a lack of protective equipment, to the risk of being contaminated with, falling ill from, and transmitting the COVID-19 virus; changes in work environments, processes, and relations in response to the pandemic; and physical, mental, and psychosocial alterations perceived by emergency service nursing workers. The exposure to the virus, risk of contamination, and changes in the work environment and relations all resulted in health repercussions, which were perceived as physical, mental, and psychosocial alterations that were described as dietary disturbances, physical fatigue, burnout, increased smoking, anxiety, sleep alterations, fear, exhaustion, stress, social isolation, loneliness, distancing from relatives, and social stigma.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe actions taken by the organizational management of an emergency service due to the COVID-19 pandemic, determined according to the prevalence of cases of infection by the coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and flu-like illnesses. METHODS: Experience report based on a retrospective analysis of the attention for respiratory syndromes in the first semester of 2019 and 2020, in addition to an analysis of documents from the institutional protocols of a federal emergency service.Development: An increase in the number of attendances was observed, representing 7.25% and 19.4% of cases in 2019 and 2020, respectively. This was due to the creation of the Crisis Office, including a multidisciplinary team created to elaborate the plan of action, changes in the physical structure and in the work processes, and training sessions. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: It became clear that the planning, coordination of actions based on the decisions of the Crisis Office, and the dissemination of reliable information, taking into consideration a focal point, were essential for the organization, management of the emergency service, and protection to the workers.

RESUMO

The objective was to identify the existing links between the conceptual proposal of the movement of health-promoting universities (HPU) and the activities carried out to increase the health of workers in higher education institutions. An integrative literature review was conducted in October 2020 in the following databases: LILACS, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Web of Science, and CINAHL and with the Boolean phrase citing, University AND "health promotion." In the initial review, 5351 studies were found, and after removing the repetitions, applying the inclusion criteria, and making the qualitative analysis, a sample of 9 articles was obtained. For the construction of the flowchart with the representation of the eligibility and inclusion of the articles, the PRISMA model was use. The findings were analyzed with the theoretical and conceptual support of the movement of HPU, which made it possible to establish the construction of three categories, to quote: full provision of social, medical, and health services; creating a favorable health environment on campus; and development of health education actions. The movement of HPU is relevant to the contemporary world; however, initiatives to incorporate these practices are still scarce, creating a gap between expectations and reality.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors associated with mental distress among health workers who cared for patients with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study of national scope, carried out between in the second quarter of 2020. A total of 437 health professionals, who filled out an electronic form about sociodemographic data, occupational aspects, psychosocial characteristics of work and mental distress. Multiple logistic regression was performed to analyze the covariables associated with mental distress. RESULTS: There was a predominance of workers on the nursing team (65.0%), female (71.0%), from Southeastern region of the country (68.6%) and with no morbidities (36.2%). The prevalence of mental distress was 61.6%. Job strain was reported by 24% of participants, and the perception of low support from coworkers was described by 52.9%. The final multiple regression model showed that mental distress was associated with females (odds ratio - OR: 1.93; 95%CI: 1.22-3.07), age up to 40 years (OR: 1.64; 95%CI: 1.07-2.52), weekly working hours equal or over 60 hours (OR: 1.87; 95%CI: 1.15-3.11), job strain (OR: 2.45; 95%CI: 1.41-4.40) and low support from co-workers (OR: 3.47; 95%CI: 2.26-5.38). CONCLUSION: Six out of ten participants presented mental distress, which was associated to both individual characteristics and factors related to the work carried out during the pandemic. There is an urgent need to map services that have such characteristics, to outline actions to promote mental health and prevent emotional distress at different levels of health care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence of testing among health workers providing care for suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19. METHODS: This quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted from April to June 2020, using a convenience sample. An online questionnaire was used for collecting sociodemographic, occupational, and clinical data, which were analyzed descriptively. RESULTS: In total, 437 health workers participated in the study, with a predominance of nursing workers (58.68%), women (70.3%), age between 30 and 49 years (54.2%), individuals living in the Southeast region of Brazil (60.54%), working in the public care system (69.11%), and focused on primary care (30.89%). Among the participants, 36% reported comorbidities, 21.1% had symptoms suggestive of COVID-19, and only 27% had undergone some type of COVID-19 testing. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the existence of risk comorbidities and symptoms suggestive of contamination, the frequency of testing was below one third among respondents. The lack of action compromises health surveillance and protection strategies for workers providing care for the population and may favor the contamination of new patients and the community.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Health care personnel (HCP) worldwide are at-risk for contracting the novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Among health care personnel, nurses are at a particularly high risk due to the physical proximity and duration of time spent providing direct care. Documenting accurate rates of COVID-19 infection and deaths among nurses worldwide has been problematic, and many countries such as the USA have no systematic mechanism for collecting this information. Brazil is unique in that it prioritized the implementation of a dedicated database, the Nursing Observatory to collect accurate and timely data regarding COVID-19 and Brazilian nursing personnel. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze COVID-19 infections and deaths among nurses registered in the centralized and dedicated Brazilian database called the Nursing Observatory. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study using secondary data from the Brazilian Nursing Observatory was conducted. PARTICIPANTS: Data are reported for two occupational categories: professional Nurse and technical nurse by country regions. All cases or deaths of professional Nurse and technical nurse registered between the 12th and 31st epidemiological weeks of 2020 were included. METHODS: From a unique numerical identification, the appropriate records of nursing personnel affected by COVID-19 were entered by the Technical Responsible Nurse for each service, according to the condition regarding COVID-19. All suspected, confirmed or unconfirmed infections were considered "cases", and all confirmed or unconfirmed deceased as "deaths". Cases and deaths were analyzed according to the variables: 1. region of the country where the case occurred, 2. nursing category and 3. epidemiological week. Universal protocols for collecting and cleaning data were used throughout the country. Infection and mortality rates (per 100,000) were obtained from the relationship between deaths registered and the population of nursing personnel by category and region. RESULTS: Nursing personnel in the Northern, Northeast and Southeast Regions of Brazil had the highest number of COVID-19 infections and deaths overall with an ascending curve occurring mainly after Epidemiological Week 19. COVID-19 infections and deaths spread later to the Midwest and Southern regions also showing an ascending curve, although the total numbers were less. CONCLUSIONS: All occupational categories of nursing personnel showed higher than expected rates of infection and death. Inequalities and a lack of adequate healthcare resources, hospital beds and Personal Protective Equipment varied by region in Brazil. The politicization of COVID-19 and the lack of a coherent national pandemic plan is a factor to be taken into account. Tweetable abstract: This cross-sectional study shows the evolution of cases and deaths of Brazilian nursing personnel over the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to report the experience of developing pedagogical mediations in a Virtual Learning Environment implemented in a nursing faculty during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: an experience report on the construction of a distance course aimed at graduates and residents of a nursing faculty at a public university located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. RESULTS: the course's conception, operationalization and implementation were the result of a collective work that culminated in a non-formal, virtual and problematic teaching process, which reached a participation rate of 82% of enrolled students. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: even in times of social isolation, the course promoted collaborative learning of knowledge about COVID-19 and strengthened the relationship between professors and students. The possibility of carrying out distance activities based on solid methodological proposals that contradict the content logic often observed in distance learning is emphasized.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to analyze how homeless people live, in times of COVID-19 pandemic, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. METHOD: an ethnographic research that used interviews and observations and articles published in newspapers and magazines of great circulation, using domain analysis. RESULTS: the results tell how the COVID-19 pandemic emerged for the homeless population. Isolation led to emptying the streets and reducing passers-by, damaging their ways of living and their survival tactics. Hunger, thirst, absence of places for bathing and for fulfilling physiological needs became part of their daily lives. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: given the impossibility of having a place to shelter, acquiring food and water and the limitations in carrying out preventive measures, care actions offered by managers to limit the virus to spread, even in this population, are ineffective.

OBJECTIVE: To report the experience of implementation of a clinical equipment of health care production to homeless people, denominated Street Outreach Office. METHOD: Experience report in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. RESULTS: The Street Outreach Office implementation resulted from a demand for health care practices for homeless people. This implementation had intersectoral articulations, causing health professionals to carry out street care practices, which led them to strive for public policies, to rethink their actions in order to increase the resolution of care to this population. CONCLUSION: We should emphasize the importance of health professionals to reinvent their practices, daily, seeking partnerships and acquisition of new knowledge in order to achieve results that can reduce the demands of these individuals throughout their life routes.

Abstract Objective To identify the publications that discussed COVID-19 as an occupational injury and its notification by health workers. Methods The search for this scoping review explored national and international literature, between 2020 and 2021, in English, Portuguese and Spanish, in the databases of the Regional Portal of the Virtual Health Library, in MEDLINE through PubMed and in Capes Journal Portal used: Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL. The texts were imported into EndNote, duplicates were removed and exported to the Rayyan application, and the articles were included in an Excel spreadsheet with the labels: COVID-19 as injuries at work and Notification of COVID-19. Results A total of 5665 studies were identified, excluding 2088 duplicates, resulting in 3577 publications, selected by title and abstract. Of these, 3280 did not meet the inclusion criteria, resulting in 297 articles. Of these, 10 were selected for full text analysis because they dealt with COVID-19 as an injury at work and/or notification of this condition by health workers. Two articles were excluded because they were a literature review, remaining 8 as the study's corpus. Conclusion Although certain countries already recognize COVID-19 as an occupational injury, some workers still have difficulties in relating the SARS-CoV-2 infection with work in health care, characterizing it as an occupational injured. Everyone should be guided and trained regarding the recognition of COVID-19 as an occupational injury and notify its occurrence, since the definition of the infection as a notifiable disease already exists.
