RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the effects of feeding dried bergamot pulp to rabbits on animal performance and meat quality. Thirty rabbits were assigned to two groups (balanced for body weight, 804.4 ± 2.35 g) and fed individually for 60 days a basal diet (control) or the basal diet in which part of the cereals was replaced with 10% of dried bergamot pulp (DBP). There were no effects of DBP on growth performance, carcass yield, or the crude protein and ether extract composition of meat. The concentrations of α-linolenic acid (C18:3 n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5 n-3) increased in the longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle (p < 0.01 and p = 0.021, respectively) after integrating dried bergamot pulp into the diet, leading to higher levels of total of ω-3 fatty acids (p < 0.01) compared to the control treatment. The inclusion of dried bergamot pulp improved the oxidative stability in meat (p < 0.001), where TBARS values were lower after 4 and 7 days of refrigerated storage (p < 0.001) in the DBP group than in the control group. Finally, feeding dried bergamot pulp to rabbits improves meat quality without negatively influencing growth performance.

RESUMO

To determine the effects of dietary inclusion of bergamot pulp and olive leaves on pork quality, thirty-six barrows (Apulo-Calabrese; 112.5 ± 7.40 kg initial bodyweight) were randomly assigned to four experimental treatments and fed for 100 days a control diet (control group) or a diet similar to the control diet in which part of the cereals were replaced with 20 % (DM on the diet fed) of ensiled bergamot pulp (dry matter on the diet fed, EBP group) or olive leaves (OLL group) or a 1:1 mixture of both by-products (BPOL group). In the present study, the dietary administration of by-products did not influence the accumulation of IMF (P > 0.05) in meat. As for individual fatty acids, no differences were observed among groups. However, the dietary supplementation of bergamot pulp tended to increase (P = 0.073) the level of α-linolenic acid in meat. In raw and cooked meat TBARS values were higher (P < 0.001) in the Control group than in EBP, OLL and BPOL groups. The integration of 20 % of bergamot pulp and/or olive leaves by-products increased the levels of tocopherol and phenolic compounds in the diets, positively influencing the shelf life of meat. No effect of diet was observed on animal performance. The results of present study indicated mainly that partial replacement of cereals with 20 % DM on the diet fed of ensiled bergamot pulp and olive leaves, either alone or in combination, in the pig's diet led to greater oxidative stability of the meat.

RESUMO

The main objective of this study was to evaluate if high dietary levels of almond hulls could influence performance and meat oxidative stability in lambs. Twenty lambs, at an average body weight of 28.8 ± 0.30 (SD) kg, were divided into two experimental groups and fed ad libitum for 40 days either with a control diet (cereal-based concentrate, control group) or with a similar diet in which part of the cereals was replaced with 40% of almond hulls on a dry matter basis (AH40 group). Dietary AH did not affect dry matter intake but reduced final body weight, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio or carcass weight. In meat, TBARS values were lower (P < 0.001) in the AH40 group than in control group. The partial replacement of cereals with 40% almond hulls in the diet negatively affecting the growth parameters of the animals but can improve meat shelf-life by reducing lipid oxidation.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of different amounts of ensiled olive cake, a major pollutant from olive oil production, in the fattening diets of 30 Apulo-Calabrese pigs as a strategy to partially substitute the traditional cereal-based diet and improve animal performance and meat fatty acid composition. The animals, during a fattening period of 120 days, were fed with three dietary treatments containing increasing levels of ensiled olive cake: 0% (C), 20% (OC20) and 40% (OC40) on dry matter. No effect of the dietary treatment was found on the animal performance and proximate meat analysis results. The inclusion of ensiled olive cake in the diet led to differences in the fatty acid (FA) profile of intramuscular fat, with a higher proportion of monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA; p < 0.001) and oleic acid (C8:1n-9, p < 0.001) and a lower concentration of polyunsaturated (PUFA, p < 0.001) and linoleic acid (C18:2n-6, p < 0.001). In conclusion, the supplementation of ensiled olive cake at up to 40% in the diets of fattening pigs could represent a useful strategy in Mediterranean areas to naturally improve the nutritional value of meat and valorise a by-product of the olive industry, reducing its environmental impact and promoting the exploitation of this local feed resource according to the principles of the circular economy.

RESUMO

Almond hulls (AH) were fed to lambs to study effects on performance and meat quality. Thirty Sarda lambs were allotted to three experimental groups and fed for 40 days either a cereal-based concentrate diet (control) or diets in which cereals were replaced with 15% (AH15) or 30% (AH30) almond hulls on a DM basis. Diets did not affect final body weight, dry matter intake, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio or carcass weight. Replacing part of the cereal mix (i.e., barley and maize) with AH did not affect meat fatty acid profiles. After 5 and 7 days of refrigerated storage respectively for cooked and raw meat, AH15 and AH30 treatments reduced meat lipid oxidation (P < 0.001). Our results suggest feeding almond hulls up to 30% in fattening lamb diets can improve meat oxidative stability without compromising growth performance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We report the development, implementation, and results of a sustainable region-wide mass-casualty management prehospital training program implemented by the Regione Lombardia emergency medical services (EMS) agency AREU in Italy. METHODS: The educational program learning objectives are: (1) command and control, communications, and resource management; (2) mass casualty triage and the START triage protocol; (3) on-scene management; (4) Regione Lombardia and AREU Mass Casualty standard operating procedures; and (5) inter-agency communications and relations. For each course edition data on participants' summative assessment, participants' feedback and costs were collected. RESULTS: Between June 26, 2013, and December 31, 2020, a total of 84 editions of the provider training event were delivered, training an overall 1329 prehospital providers; 1239 (93%) passed the summative assessment and were qualified as being operationally "ready." Regarding participant feedback, the overall program was rated 4.4 ± 0.7 out of 5. The overall cost of running the provider program during the study period was €321 510 (circa US $382 000). The average cost per edition was €3828 and €242 per participant. CONCLUSIONS: We have described a simple yet interactive simulation and blended-learning approach, which has yielded good pass rates, good participant satisfaction, and contained costs to systematically train emergency medical service personnel.

RESUMO

This work investigated the effects of feeding ensiled bergamot pulp to pigs on meat and salami quality. Eighteen pigs were assigned to two experimental treatments and fed a cereal-based concentrate diet (control) or the same diet in which ensiled bergamot pulp replaced 15% dry matter of the diet fed (BP). The BP treatment increased α-linolenic acid (+250%; P < 0.05), docosapentaenoic acid (+62%; P < 0.05), docosahexaenoic acid (+43%; P < 0.05) and consequently n-3 PUFA (+15%; P < 0.01) in meat. In salami, the content of α-linolenic acid, total PUFA and n-3 PUFA increased (+320%, +25% and + 258%, respectively) by feeding the BP diet (P < 0.001). The inclusion of bergamot pulp in the diet did not alter the oxidative stability in raw and cooked meat and colour descriptors. In salami, TBARS values were lower after 5 days of storage (P < 0.001) in BP group (1.54 vs 2.96). Finally, dietary supplementation with ensiled bergamot pulp to pigs improved the nutritional value of meat and meat products.

RESUMO

An investigation was carried out on the effect in pig diet of supplementation with exhausted bergamot by-product, stemming from pharmaceutical industry after extraction of phenolic compounds, on growth performance and on the quality of meat and meat products. Twenty pigs were assigned to two dietary treatments and fed a conventional concentrate (control) or a concentrate including exhausted bergamot by-product at the level of 15% on a DM basis (EB). No significant differences between dietary treatments were found for final weight (p = 0.243), carcass weight (p = 0.679), dry matter intake (p = 0.321). In EB pork, the proportion of docosapentaenoic acid was significantly increased (p < 0.05); it tended to have a greater proportion of n-3 PUFA (p = 0.09), and the n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio was lower in EB treatment (p = 0.01). In salami from EB pigs fed, the proportion of α-linolenic acid and the total n-3 PUFA were higher than in the control group (p < 0.001). In salami, the TBARS value was lower after 5 days of storage (p < 0.001) in the EB group. Therefore, the present results suggest that the inclusion of exhausted bergamot by-product in pig diet resulted in a qualitative improvement of meat and meat products.

RESUMO

[reaction: see text] The binding tendencies toward carboxylates of a trifurcated receptor containing three copper(II)-cyclam subunits have been investigated in pure water, through the displacement of a fluorescent indicator. The receptor is tailor-made for the recognition of tricarboxylates, e.g., citrate, whose three negatively charged oxygen atoms interact with the three coordinatively unsaturated Cu(II) centers.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess whether different grazing management affect animal performance and meat fatty acid composition. Thirty-five lambs were divided into three groups: 12 lambs grazed from 9 am to 5 pm (8 h group); 11 lambs grazed from 9 am to 1 pm (4hAM group) and 12 lambs grazed from 1 pm to 5 pm (4hPM group). The trial was conducted over 72 days. The 8 h lambs had greater DMI (P<0.0005) and final body weight (P<0.05) than the 4hPM and 4hAM lambs while carcass weight was not different between the three groups. The meat of the 4hPM lambs contained greater (P<0.05) percentages of polyunsaturated fatty acids, C18:2 cis-9 trans-11 and lower saturated fatty acids and C18:0 than the meat of the 8 h and 4hAM lambs. It is concluded that allowing lambs to graze during the afternoon rather than during 8 h does not compromise the carcass yield and results in a healthier meat fatty acid profile.

RESUMO

A new approach to the use of micelles in the fluorescent sensing of metal cations is proposed and applied to the case of Hg(2+). We demonstrate how it is possible to transform a system from an ON-OFF to an OFF-ON sensor by changing the length of the chain used to lipophilise a ligand that resides inside TritonX-100 micelles together with pyrene as the fluorophore. Three tetrathia-monoaza macrocyclic ligands have been synthesised with the same ring but functionalised on the nitrogen atom with a methyl (C1-NS4), an n-butyl (C4-NS4) or an n-dodecyl (C12-NS4) chain. The three ligands have been fully characterised in water containing TritonX-100 micelles by means of potentiometric titrations and their apparent protonation and complexation constants with Hg(2+) were determined. On the basis of the distribution diagrams obtained, the more lipophilic C12-NS4 has been developed as an ON-OFF fluorescent sensor for mercury: working at pH<4, in the absence of Hg(2+) the ligand is inside the micelles, protonated and non-quenching, while on addition of mercury the [C12-NS4Hg](2+) complex forms which remains inside the micelles and is quenching. On the other hand, the ligand of intermediate chain length, C4-NS4, can be used to obtain an OFF-ON sensor at 7.07.0 the ligand is unprotonated, it stays inside the micelles and is quenching, while addition of Hg(2+) in the 7.0-9.5 pH range results in the formation of [C4-NS4Hg](2+), which is hydrophilic enough to leave the micelles and to be released into the bulk solution where it is no longer capable of quenching pyrene fluorescence. Additional studies on C1-NS4, C3-NS4 and C8-NS4 indicate that the optimal chain length to observe this OFF-ON behaviour is C(3)-C(4).

RESUMO

A new series of ligands, containing one (L1H(2)-L4H(2)) or two (L5H(4)-L6H(4)) 1,4,8,11-tetraaza-5,7-dione units and functionalized with a propargyl group on the C atom between the C=O moieties, has been synthesized. Protonation constants for the ligands and formation constants of their Cu(2+) complexes have been determined in water, and the coordination geometry of the complexes existing at various pH values has been investigated by coupled pH-metric and spectrophotometric titrations. Ligands capable of simple uptake of Cu(2+) with the formation of neutral, square-planar complexes containing the -2-charged diamino-diimido donor sets and ligands containing further coordinating groups (quinoline or pyridine) capable of single and double cation translocation have been investigated. The role of the substituents on the amino groups and the structural role played by the propargyl group have been examined as regards Cu(2+) complexation and translocation. In the double-translocating ligand L6H(4), when the two Cu(2+) ions move inside the diamino-diamido donor set, the slim propargyl group allows an unprecedented folding of the whole ligand with apical coordination of one pyridine to form a five-coordinate, square-pyramidal Cu(2+) ion. The crystal and molecular structures of this unusual [L6Cu(2)] complex have been determined by X-ray diffraction. Finally, oxidation of Cu(2+) to Cu(3+) has been studied by cyclic voltammetry in water, which revealed that the redox reaction occurs only when the copper cation is within the diamino-diimido compartment. Moreover, both functionalization of the primary amines with bulky substituents and apical coordination of Cu(2+) make access to the 3+ oxidation state more difficult and disrupt the reversibility of the electrochemical process.

RESUMO

A micellar approach is proposed to build a series of systems featuring an "off-on-off" fluorescent window response with changes in pH. The solubilizing properties of micelles are used to self-assemble, in water, plain pyrene with lipophilized pyridine and tertiary amine moieties. Since these components are contained in the small volume of the same micelle, pyrene fluorescence is influenced by the basic moieties: protonated pyridines and free tertiary amines behave as quenchers. Accordingly, fluorescence transitions from the "off" to the "on" state, and viceversa, take place when the pH crosses the pK(a) values of the amine and pyridine fragments. To obtain an "off-on-off" fluorescent response in this investigation we use either a set of dibasic lipophilic molecules (containing covalently linked pyridine and tertiary amine groups) or combinations of separate, lipophilic pyridines and tertiary amines. The use of combinations of dibasic and monobasic lipophilic molecules also gives a window-shaped fluorescence response with changes in pH: it is the highest pyridine pK(a) and the lowest tertiary amine pK(a) that determine the window limits. The pK(a) values of all the examined lipophilic molecules were determined in micelles, and compared with the values found for the same molecules in solvent mixtures in which they are molecularly dispersed. The effect of micellization is to significantly lower the observed protonation constants of the lipophilized species. Moreover, the more lipophilic a molecule is, the lower the observed logK value is. Accordingly, changing the substituents on the basic moieties or modifying their structure, tuning the lipophilicity of the mono- or dibases, and choosing among a large set of possible combination of lipophilized mono- and dibases have allowed us to tune, almost at will, both the width and the position along the pH axis of the obtained fluorescent window.

RESUMO

AIMS: In about 30% of patients with syncope, the responsible mechanisms remain unrecognised. Nevertheless, the possibility of an arrhythmic aetiology remains, however, difficult to rule out. METHODS: We therefore monitored with an implantable loop recorder (ILR, Reveal Plus, Medtronic) 34 subjects (60+/-15 years) with at least two unexplained syncopal episodes and negative neurological and cardiovascular work-up. RESULTS: During a follow-up of 7+/-4 months, syncope occurred in 11 subjects. In nine of them the mechanisms responsible for these events were identified by ILR monitoring: marked bradycardia or asystole (n=6), atrial fibrillation with wide QRS tachycardia (n=1) and sinus rhythm with fine artifacts likely to be due to muscle contractions (n=2). Pre-syncope occurred in seven patients: advanced atrioventricular block (n=3), sinus tachycardia (n=1), and wide QRS tachycardia (n=1) were documented. Thus, when considering all 18 patients with recurrences, a diagnosis was achieved in 53% of subjects. Recognition of the rhythm disorder in seven patients with syncope and four patients with pre-syncope guided patient management. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that ILR monitoring facilitates the identification of mechanisms responsible for recurrences and therapeutic management in subjects with syncope or pre-syncope and negative traditional neurological and cardiovascular work-up.
