Venus, unlike Earth, is an extremely dry planet although both began with similar masses, distances from the Sun, and presumably water inventories. The high deuterium-to-hydrogen ratio in the venusian atmosphere relative to Earth's also indicates that the atmosphere has undergone significantly different evolution over the age of the Solar System. Present-day thermal escape is low for all atmospheric species. However, hydrogen can escape by means of collisions with hot atoms from ionospheric photochemistry, and although the bulk of O and O2 are gravitationally bound, heavy ions have been observed to escape through interaction with the solar wind. Nevertheless, their relative rates of escape, spatial distribution, and composition could not be determined from these previous measurements. Here we report Venus Express measurements showing that the dominant escaping ions are O+, He+ and H+. The escaping ions leave Venus through the plasma sheet (a central portion of the plasma wake) and in a boundary layer of the induced magnetosphere. The escape rate ratios are Q(H+)/Q(O+) = 1.9; Q(He+)/Q(O+) = 0.07. The first of these implies that the escape of H+ and O+, together with the estimated escape of neutral hydrogen and oxygen, currently takes place near the stoichometric ratio corresponding to water.

Real-time synchrotron diffraction has been used to monitor the phase transformations of highly exothermic, fast self-propagating solid combustion reactions on a subsecond time scale down to 100 milliseconds and in some instances to 10 milliseconds. Three systems were investigated: Ti + C --> TiC; Ti + C + xNi --> TiC + Ni-Ti alloy; and Al + Ni --> AlNi. In all three reactions, the first step was the melting of the metal reactants. Formation of TiC in the first two reactions was completed within 400 milliseconds of the melting of the Ti metal, indicating that the formation of TiC took place during the passage of the combustion wave front. In the Al + Ni reaction, however, passage of the wave front was followed by the appearance and disappearance of at least one intermediate in the afterburn region. The final AlNi was formed some 5 seconds later and exhibited a delayed appearance of the (210) reflection, which tends to support a phase transformation from a disordered AlNi phase at high temperature to an ordered CsCl structure some 20 seconds later. This new experimental approach can be used to study the chemical dynamics of high-temperature solid-state phenomena and to provide the needed database to test various models for solid combustion.
RESUMO
The goal of this paper is to understand the processes by which solar wind electrons are energized in the Martian magnetosphere and how this compares to processes at Venus and Earth. Each is unique in the source of its magnetic field topology and how this influences electron energization. To achieve this goal, 24 million spectra spanning 13 years have been examined using the electron spectrometer from the Mars Express spacecraft between about 12,000 km and about 250 km altitude, and from all latitudes and local times. The top 10 largest differential energy flux at energies above the differential energy flux peak have been found: seven spectra from the magnetosheath near noon, three from the dark tail (the largest two from the middle and ionospheric edge of the magnetosheath). Spectral comparisons show a decade range in the peak of the electron distributions; however, all distributions show a similar energy maximum dictated by solar wind/planet interaction. Similarly derived, the largest Venus spectrum occurred near the magnetosheath bow shock and had the same shape as the most intense Mars inner magnetosheath spectrum. The Mars and Venus dayside spectra compared to the Mars nightside spectrum that included an enhanced optical signal attributed to discrete "auroral" precipitation show a similar shape. These spectra are also compared to a selected auroral zone electron spectra from the Earth. The Mars and Venus results suggest that there is no more energy needed to generate electrons forming the nightside precipitation than is gained during the solar wind/planet interaction.

The design and capabilities of a novel Quick scanning Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (QEXAFS) monochromator are presented. The oscillatory movement of the crystal stage is realized by means of a unique open-loop driving scheme operating a direct drive torque motor. The entire drive mechanics are installed inside of a goniometer located on the atmospheric side of the vacuum chamber. This design allows remote adjustment of the oscillation frequency and spectral range, giving complete control of QEXAFS measurements. It also features a real step-scanning mode, which operates without a control loop to prevent induced vibrations. Equipped with Si(111) and Si(311) crystals on a single stage, it facilitates an energy range from 4.0 keV to 43 keV. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra up to k = 14.4 Å(-1) have been acquired within 17 ms and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra covering more than 200 eV within 10 ms. The achieved data quality is excellent as shown by the presented measurements.

A fast X-ray chopper capable of producing ms long X-ray pulses with a typical rise time of few µs was realized. It is ideally suited to investigate the temporal response of X-ray detectors with response times of the order of µs to ms, in particular, any kind of ionization chambers and large area photo diodes. The drive mechanism consists of a brushless DC motor and driver electronics from a common hard disk drive, keeping the cost at an absolute minimum. Due to its simple construction and small dimensions, this chopper operates at home lab based X-ray tubes and synchrotron radiation sources as well. The dynamics of the most important detectors used in time resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy, namely, ionization chambers and Passivated Implanted Planar Silicon photodiodes, were investigated in detail. The results emphasize the applicability of this X-ray chopper.

After complicated distal radius fractures with persistent symptoms, a variety of radiological methods may be indicated, including plain films, magnification views, examination under stress and arthrography. CT accurately differentiates abnormalities of the distal radio-ulnar joint and aids in deciding on surgical treatment. Demonstration of degenerative changes and of subluxations is much more satisfactory in the third plane, since there is no superimposition.

Forty fractured calcanei (13 without and 27 with involvement of the joint) were examined by CT and the angle of the hind foot measured. Following a typical compression fracture there is a negative calcaneus-valgus angle, i.e. varus deformity of the tuberosity fragment. The sustentaculum angle is increased. There are changes in the talo-calcaneal and calcaneo-cuboidal angles. The length ratio of calcaneus to talus is reduced. Reproducible measurements make it possible to compare the results of operative correction and of changes in shape following conservative treatment, e.g. during weight-bearing.

The absence of soft tissue superimposition on bone makes CT greatly superior to conventional radiographs, even using special views, for demonstrating the hind foot. Views derived from both methods are compared. Semicoronary and transverse planes have been defined in relation to specific points in the tarsus. In the semicoronary plane, the calcaneus-valgus angle varies from +10 degrees (valgus) to -10 degrees (varus) and the sustentaculum angle varies from 18 to 28 degrees. In the transverse plane, the plantar talocalcaneal angle is 60 degrees to 70 degrees and the calcaneal-cuboidal angle is 20 degrees to 35 degrees. These values are based on measurements of 62 normal feet. They are valuable for judging quantitatively posttraumatic deformities, displacement of fragments and operative results.

Nine N metabolism trials were conducted in a N-depletion-repletion regimen using five breed crosses of steers with 0, 25 or 50% Brahman. Three steers from each breed cross (avg initial wt 239 kg) were standardized for 3 wk on an 18% protein diet and depleted for 5 wk on a 7.5% protein diet and then repleted for 4 wk on the 18% protein diet. Nitrogen balance and blood and urinary N metabolites were monitored to determine changes in metabolic status due to changes in dietary N intake. Reduced N intake during the depletion period almost completely inhibited fiber digestion (P less than .01), while ruminal ammonia concentration fell from an average concentration of 156 during standardization to 22 mg/liter (P less than .01) during depletion. Organic matter digestion was depressed (P less than .05) due to the reduced fiber digestion. Absolute amounts of intake, fecal, urinary, absorbed and retained N were severely depressed during depletion. Apparent digestibility of N was reduced from an average of 68% during standardization to 42% (P less than .05) during depletion, but truly digested N was not affected. Nitrogen retained, as a percentage of intake, or absorbed was reduced only during the first week of depletion. Urea N comprised the major identified urinary fraction during standardization and repletion, whereas creatinine was the major fraction during depletion. Brahman-cross steers excreted more urinary N (P less than .1) and retained less N (P less than .13) during repletion than Angus X Hereford steers. Creatinine excretion was also higher (P less than .01) during depletion for Brahman-cross steers. Blood urea and albumin N concentrations were higher (P less than .05) during both depletion and repletion among Brahman crosses. These experiments suggest that blood measurements were more sensitive than N balance to changes in dietary N state and that faster recharge of blood N measurements in Brahman cattle may help mitigate adverse effects of N depletion stress.

Individual consumption of total digestible nutrients (TDN) was measured on 105 two-breed cross cows (Hereford X Angus reciprocal crosses, HA; Simmental X Angus, SA; Simmental X Hereford, SH; Brown Swiss X Angus, BA; Brown Swiss X Hereford BH; Jersey X Angus, JA and Jersey X Hereford, JH) and their three-breed cross calves managed in drylot. Cows were 4 to 6 yr of age and mated to Charolais or Limousin bulls. Cows remained in the drylot for a period of approximately 1 yr (from weaning one year to weaning the next year). Ad libitum consumption of corn silage was allowed for about 4 h each day and fixed amounts of grain and protein supplement were fed as needed. Calf creep feed was provided during the latter portion of lactation. Compared with the average weight of HA cows (454 kg), SA cows were 7% heavier, SH, BA and BH cows were similar, while JH and JA cows were 15 and 22% lighter in weight, respectively. Total intake of TDN by cow and calf for the 365-d drylot period was greatest for the SA group (2,309 kg), exceeding that of the HA group by 11.2%. The JA group consumed 7.2% less than HA, while other groups were similar to HA in TDN intake. Daily intake of TDN for the 365-d period, expressed as a percentage of cow weight and cow weight .75, was highest for the smaller J crosses. The ratio of 365-d TDN intake to 205-d calf weight, a measure of weaning efficiency, averaged 10.0 kg/kg for JH, BH and SH, 10.5 kg/kg for HA and BA and 10.9 kg/kg for JA and SA. When TDN intake was adjusted for cow weight change, crossbred cow group was not a significant source of variation for kg TDN/205-d calf weight.

Birth, weaning, feedlot and carcass traits were evaluated on 1,181 calves sired by Charolais and Limousin bulls out of eight crossbred dam groups (Hereford X Angus, Angus X Hereford, Simmental X Angus, Simmental X Hereford, Brown Swiss X Angus, Brown Swiss X Hereford, Jersey X Angus, Jersey X Hereford). Calves were born in the spring over a 4-yr period during which dams ranged from 3 to 8 yr of age. Charolais-cross calves were 2.7 kg heavier (P less than .01) at birth and had a 9.9% higher (P less than .01) incidence of difficult calvings and 4.6% greater (P less than .05) preweaning death loss than did Limousin crosses. Charolais-sired calves out-gained Limousin-sired calves by 31 g/d (P less than .01) from birth to weaning and were 9 kg heavier (P less than .01) at weaning. After weaning, calves were self-fed a finishing diet and slaughtered as each animal attained an estimated carcass grade of low Choice. Charolais-cross calves gained 60 g/d faster (P less than .01) than Limousin crosses, were fed 6.8 fewer d and were 17.3 kg heavier (P less than .01) at slaughter. Feed efficiency was similar for both sire breeds. On a grade-equivalent basis, Charolais crosses produced 7 kg heavier (P less than .01) carcass and had 22 g more carcass weight per day of age (P less than .01). Charolais crosses had slightly less internal and external fat. Dressing percentage was higher for Limousin cross calves (64.6 vs 63.9%, P less than .01). Longissimus muscle area and carcass cutability were similar for crosses of both sire breeds.

Selection was applied from 1964 to 1978 for increased weaning weight (WWL) or yearling weight (YWL) in two Hereford lines with an Angus line maintained as an unselected control line (CL). Each line was maintained with 50 cows and four sires (two sires selected each year and each used for 2 yr). Traits analyzed were birth weight (BW), preweaning daily gain (WDG), weaning weight (WW), weaning conformation grade (WG), weaning condition score (WC), weaning to yearling daily gain (YDG), yearling weight (YW), yearling conformation grade (YG) and yearling condition score (YC). After 15 yr of selection, a total of 3.22 generations of selection had occurred in both WWL and YWL. Average selection differentials in standard measure per generation for WWL, YWL and CL, respectively, were: BW, .44, .51, .0; WDG, .95, .81, .09; WW, .97, .85, .09; WG, .66, .57, .09; WC, .60, .38, -.02; YDG, .30, .79, .38; YW, .80, 1.05, .25; YG, .63, .62, .34 and YC, .45, .64, .24. The proportionate contribution of sire selection (delta S) to the average midparent selection differential per generation (delta M) was 70% in WWL and 76% in YWL. Selection indexes in retrospect were also calculated.

Selection was applied from 1964 to 1978 for increased weaning weight (WWL) or yearling weight (YWL) in two Hereford lines. An Angus line was maintained as an unselected control line (CL). Each line was maintained with 50 cows and four sires each year (two sires selected each year and used for 2 yr). Primary traits measured in the lines were birth weight (BW), preweaning daily gain (WDG), weaning weight (WW), weaning conformation grade (WG), weaning condition score (WC), weaning to yearling daily gain (YDG), yearling weight (YW), yearling conformation grade (YG) and yearling condition score (YC). Averaged over two methods, estimated genetic responses/generation (in standard deviation units) in WWL and YWL were: BW, .29, .26; WDG, .17, .15; WW, .22, .19; WG, .19, .26; WC, .12, .12; YDG, -.02, .04; YW, .08, .14; YG, .19, .16; YC, -.13, -.03. The realized heritability estimates were .23 and .15 for WW and YW, respectively. The realized genetic correlation between WW and YW was .69. Progeny from crosses of selected WWL and YWL sires to Angus cows had similar feedlot and carcass performance. At the end of the study, milk yield and composition were similar for mature cows in WWL and YWL.

Lifetime productivity of young (2 to 6-yr-old) crossbred cows containing various proportions (0, 1/4, or 1/2) of Braham breeding was evaluated using 188 spring-calving and 154 fall-calving cows. Cows were mated to Limousin sires to produce 1983 through 1986 calf crops. The 1987 calf crops were produced using Limousin and Salers sires. Significant (P less than .10) genotype (crossbred cow group) x environment (season of calving) interactions were found for age at first calf and lifetime calving percentage and mature cow weight. Within the spring calving group, no differences were found between crossbred groups for age at first calf or lifetime calving percentage. However, within the fall-calving group, 0 and 1/2 Braham cows from Angus dams calved earlier than did those from Hereford dams. Age at first calf also tended to increase as proportion of Brahman increased in the fall-calving group. Within the fall-calving group, lifetime calving percentage for 0 and 1/2 Brahman cows from Hereford dams was lower than for those from Angus dams. The opposite was true for the 1/4 Braham crosses. In general, as the proportion of Brahman breeding increased, productivity, measured as weight per calf or weight weaned per year, increased; however, age at first calving increased also as proportion of Brahman increased. All spring-calving groups calved earlier in life (P less than .05) than their respective fall-calving counterparts and with the exception of the 0 Brahman groups, which were similar, spring-calving groups produced a higher (P less than .05) percentage of calves than did the fall groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Productivity of 3-, 4-, and 5-yr-old crossbred cows containing various proportions (0, 1/4, or 1/2) of Brahman breeding out of Angus or Hereford dams was evaluated using 489 spring-calving and 427 fall-calving records collected over a 4-yr period. Cows were bred to Limousin sires for the first 3 yr and to Limousin and Salers sires the 4th yr. Interactions between crossbred cow group and season of calving were not significant. Percentage of cows exposed to breeding that weaned a calf increased (P less than .01) as proportion Brahman breeding increased, was higher (P less than .01) for cows out of Angus dams than for cows out of Hereford dams, and was higher (P less than .01) for spring-calving cows. As the proportion Brahman increased, the percentage requiring assistance at birth decreased, and cows out of Angus dams required less (P less than .05) assistance than those out of Hereford dams. Preweaning ADG, adjusted weaning weight, weaning conformation, weaning condition, and adjusted weaning hip height increased a proportion Brahman breeding increased. Spring-born calves gained .12 kg/d faster (P less than .01) than fall-born calves. However, weight at weaning was similar for the two groups; spring-born calves were weaned at an average age of 205 d, and fall-born calves were weaned at an average age of 240 d. Fall-calving cows were heavier (P less than .05) than spring-calving cows, and 0 and 1/2 Brahman cows were heavier (P less than .01) than 1/4 Brahman cows. These data indicate that Brahman-cross dams can be used to improve reproductive rate and increase preweaning growth rate, and thus weaning weight.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Productivity of 2-yr-old crossbred cows containing various proportions (0, 1/4 or 1/2) of Brahman breeding was evaluated using 203 spring-calving and 171 fall-calving heifers over a 3-yr period. All heifers were mated to Limousin sires. Percentage of cows exposed to breeding that weaned a calf was the only trait for which a significant crossbred cow group x season of calving interaction was found. Preweaning ADG and age-adjusted weaning weight increased as proportion Brahman breeding increased. Age-adjusted weaning weight was similar for the two groups because spring-born calves were weaned at an average age of 205 d and fall-born calves were weaned at an average age of 240 d. For weaning condition scores, an interaction between dam breed and proportion Brahman was detected; scores tended to be greater for calves out of 1/2 Hereford dams than for those out of 1/2 Angus dams, and this difference increased as proportion Brahman increased. Weaning conformation scores were similar for all calves. Age-adjusted weaning hip height increased as proportion Brahman breeding increased. Based on numbers of weaned calves, spring calving was more advantageous than fall calving. Averaged across both calving seasons, weaning weight tended to increase as proportion Brahman increased.

Monthly estimates of 24-h milk yield were obtained on 160 spring-calving and 153 fall-calving crossbred cows containing various proportions (0, 1/4 or 1/2) of Brahman breeding, all bred to Limousin sires. Milk production was measured using weigh-suckle-weigh procedures. Interactions between crossbred group and season of calving were not significant. Across seasons, milk production rarely was affected by proportion of Brahman breeding; however, milk yield, averaged over six monthly measurements, was greater (P less than .10) for cows out of Hereford dams than for cows out of Angus dams. Averaged over six monthly measurements, estimated 24-h milk yield ranged from 5.3 kg for Hereford x Angus to 6.2 kg for Brahman x Hereford cows. Season of calving affected milk yield during the first and fourth measurement periods. Fall-calving cows produced more (P less than .01) milk during the first period whereas spring-calving cows produced more milk during the fourth period. Lactation patterns for the two seasons differed. Spring-calving cows had a more typical lactation curve, whereas the curve for fall-calving cows showed more variability in milk yield throughout lactation. Phenotypic correlations between monthly measurements of 24-h milk yield and calf performance tended to be moderate and positive within the spring group. Correlations for the fall group, although positive, tended to be weaker than those found in the spring group.

Performance to weaning was evaluated on 489 spring-born and 416 fall-born crossbred calves of three proportions of Brahman breeding (0, 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman) over a 3-yr period. The calves were produced by appropriate matings of Angus (A), Hereford (H), Brahman (B), 1/2B-1/2A and 1/2B-1/2H bulls to Angus and Hereford cows. Interactions between proportion of Brahman breeding and season of birth existed (P less than .01) for all traits except birth weight. Birth weights of 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman calves were 1.4 and 3.8 kg heavier (P less than .05), respectively, than 0 Brahman calves. Spring-born calves that were 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman outgained (P less than .05) 0 Brahman calves 36 and 69 g/d, respectively, and were 9 and 18 kg, respectively, heavier (P less than .05) at weaning, whereas preweaning average daily gains and weaning weights were similar among fall-born cross-bred calf groups. Among spring-born calves, 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman calves were 2.6 and 6.6 cm, respectively, taller (P less than .05) than 0 Brahman calves, whereas among fall-born calves 0 and 1/4 Brahman calves had similar hip heights and 1/2 Brahman calves were 3.7 and 2.8 cm taller (P less than .05) than 0 and 1/4 Brahman calves, respectively. Conformation and condition scores were similar for crossbred groups among spring-born calves, whereas conformation and condition scores decreased as proportion of Brahman breeding increased among fall-born calves. These data indicated that genotype X environment interactions are important in beef production and increased proportions of Brahman breeding were advantageous in a spring-calving program but not in a fall-calving program.

Postweaning growth, sexual development and reproductive traits were evaluated over a 3-yr period on 201 spring-born and 180 fall-born crossbred heifers with 0, 1/4 or 1/2 Brahman breeding. The proportion of Brahman breeding X season of birth interaction was significant for five traits (average daily gain weaning to yearling, yearling condition score, percentage of heifers detected in estrus, prebreeding condition score and percentage of heifers that became pregnant) and was not significant for six traits (yearling weight, hip height and conformation score, age and weight at puberty and prebreeding weight. Among spring-born heifers, 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman heifers outgained (P less than .05) 0 Brahman heifers from weaning to yearling by 50 and 66 g/d, respectively; among fall-born heifers, 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman heifers outgained (P less than .05) 0 Brahman heifers by 41 and 104 g/d, respectively. Yearling weight of 1/2 Brahman heifers was 13 and 10 kg heavier (P less than .05), respectively, than 0 and 1/4 Brahman heifers. Yearling hip height of 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman heifers were 1.9 and 5.7 cm taller (P less than .05), respectively, than 0 Brahman heifers. Weight prior to the start of the breeding season were similar among crossbred heifer groups and spring-born heifers were 66 kg heavier (P less than .05) than fall-born heifers. The percentage of heifers that became pregnant was similar among spring-born crossbred heifer groups, whereas among fall-born heifer groups 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman heifers were 25.2 and 49.4 percentage points lower (P less than .05), respectively, than 0 Brahman heifers.
