RESUMO

Two mishaps associated with closed-chest cardiac resuscitation are presented. One-pneumoperitoneum-became evident during life, created considerable diagnostic difficulty, and evoked treatment that possibly hastened the patient's death. The other-cardiac puncture-appeared at autopsy and its mechanism may be unique.

RESUMO

I finished a 100-mile competitive run in hot, humid weather. Because of knee pain, I took therapeutic amounts of aspirin before and throughout the race. Based on empirical evidence, I conclude that aspirin increased by sweat rate, body temperature, and urinary output; inhibited my thirst; abolished my knee pain; and blunted my sense of fatigue. The overall effect was detrimental and predisposed me to heat illness. From the information presented, two potential effects of aspirin have become evident. First, aspirin therapy (approximately 10 or more tablets daily) may be dangerous when combined with physical exertion in the heat. Second, aspirin therapy might reduce the extreme thirst sometimes associated with hyperreninemia. Both hypotheses deserve further study.

RESUMO

Descriptive profiles were developed for 15 members of the United States Women's National Volleyball Training Team. Data were obtained from anthropometric, strength, physiologic, and motor performance domains. Within-group comparisons were made between the six women who were selected for the Pan-American Team and the nine who were not. The Pan-American selectees were taller and heavier and demonstrated greater motor ability than the non-selectees. Strength measurements did not indicate consistent differences between the two sub-groups. The non-selected players had a greater VO2max than those selected. Between-group comparisons on selected variables were made between the subject and other American women volleyball players. The training team subjects were taller and heavier than the comparative groups. The training team group demonstrated lower heart rate MAX (180 beats/min) than the other groups reported, and their VO2max (43.2 ml/kg/min) was within the range of the comparative groups.

RESUMO

This study analyzed the training methods and racing techniques of 12 athletes who have completed 100-mile runs. It showed that use of aspirin during the race can be dangerous if the run takes place in hot weather. No other consistent correlation was evident, however, between the variables examined and the finishing times. The findings suggest that an average marathoner can finish the 100-mile run without modifying his training program.
