RESUMO

We present a setup to generate tightly focused Bessel beams that is composed of a half-ball lens coupled with a relay lens. The system is simple and compact compared to conventional imaging of axicons based on microscope objectives. We experimentally demonstrate the generation of a Bessel beam with a 42° cone angle at 980 nm in air with a typical beam length of 500µm and a central core radius of about 550 nm. We numerically studied the effects of the misalignment of the different optical elements and the range of tilt and shift that are acceptable to obtain a regular Bessel beam.

We present an experimental study of the variation of quality factor (Q-factor) of WGM resonators as a function of surface roughness. We consider mm-size whispering-gallery mode resonators manufactured with fluoride crystals, featuring Q-factors of the order of 1 billion at 1550 nm. The experimental procedure consists of repeated polishing steps, after which the surface roughness is evaluated using profilometry by white-light phase-shifting interferometry, while the Q-factors are determined using the cavity-ring-down method. This protocol permits us to establish an explicit curve linking the Q-factor of the disk-resonator to the surface roughness of the rim. We have performed measurements with four different crystals, namely, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and lithium fluoride. We have thereby found that the variations of Q-factor as a function of surface roughness is universal, in the sense that it is globally independent of the bulk material under consideration. We also discuss our experimental results in the light of theoretical estimates of surface scattering Q-factors already published in the literature.

RESUMO

Arbitrary shaping of the on-axis intensity of Bessel beams requires spatial modulation of both amplitude and phase. We develop a non-iterative direct space beam shaping method to generate Bessel beams with high energy throughput from direct space with a single phase-only spatial light modulator. For this purpose, we generalize the approach of Bolduc et al. to non-uniform input beams. We point out the physical limitations imposed on the on-axis intensity profile for unidirectional beams. Analytical, numerical and experimental results are provided.

RESUMO

We report the fabrication for the first time of a strontium fluoride (SrF(2)) whispering-gallery mode resonator with quality factor in excess of 1 billion. The millimeter-size disk-resonator is polished until the surface roughness decreases down to a root-mean square value of 1.2 nm, as measured with a vertical scanning profilometer. We also demonstrate that this ultrahigh Q resonator allows for the generation of a normal-dispersion Kerr optical frequency comb at 1550 nm.

We investigate the early stage of propagation of Bessel-Gauss vortex beams where a transition regime shows a progressive lateral expansion of the main intensity ring before reaching a diffraction-free regime. The eikonal equation is used to characterize the beam structure. The beam is featured by a family of hyperboloids with variable waists, generating a tapered tubular caustic. Our analytical results are in excellent agreement with numerical and experimental results. We show the transition regime can be well eliminated by using hollow input beams.

RESUMO

We describe a novel optofluidic fiber arrangement that allows for nonlinear effects enhancement between fluids and laser light while suppressing the generation of cavitation bubbles. By filling this optofluidic system with toluene and pumping it with a nanosecond microchip laser, we demonstrate the efficient generation of a broadband Raman frequency comb spanning from 532 to more than 1000 nm. It is further shown that the Raman frequency comb dramatically broadens toward broadband continuum light due to the stimulated Raman-Kerr scattering.

Controlling the formation of high aspect ratio void channels inside glass is important for applications like the high-speed dicing of glass. Here, we investigate void formation using ultrafast Bessel beams in the single shot illumination regime. We characterize the morphology of the damages as a function of pulse energy, pulse duration, and position of the beam inside fused silica, Corning Eagle XG, and Corning Gorilla glass. While a large set of parameters allow for void formation inside fused silica, the operating window is much more restricted for Eagle XG and Gorilla glass. The transient formation of a molten layer around voids enables us interpreting the evolution of the morphology with pulse energy and duration.

Microwave photonics systems rely fundamentally on the interaction between microwave and optical signals. These systems are extremely promising for various areas of technology and applied science, such as aerospace and communication engineering, sensing, metrology, nonlinear photonics, and quantum optics. In this article, we present the principal techniques used in our lab to build microwave photonics systems based on ultra-high Q whispering gallery mode resonators. First detailed in this article is the protocol for resonator polishing, which is based on a grind-and-polish technique close to the ones used to polish optical components such as lenses or telescope mirrors. Then, a white light interferometric profilometer measures surface roughness, which is a key parameter to characterize the quality of the polishing. In order to launch light in the resonator, a tapered silica fiber with diameter in the micrometer range is used. To reach such small diameters, we adopt the "flame-brushing" technique, using simultaneously computer-controlled motors to pull the fiber apart, and a blowtorch to heat the fiber area to be tapered. The resonator and the tapered fiber are later approached to one another to visualize the resonance signal of the whispering gallery modes using a wavelength-scanning laser. By increasing the optical power in the resonator, nonlinear phenomena are triggered until the formation of a Kerr optical frequency comb is observed with a spectrum made of equidistant spectral lines. These Kerr comb spectra have exceptional characteristics that are suitable for several applications in science and technology. We consider the application related to ultra-stable microwave frequency synthesis and demonstrate the generation of a Kerr comb with GHz intermodal frequency.

PURPOSE: To determine the factors that lead to changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and their long-term stability. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five hundred twenty-two myopic eyes and 296 hyperopic eyes were enrolled in the study. Pneumotonometry was used to measure IOP once in the preoperative stage and twice in the postoperative stage-1 month after the operation and 1 year later. Ultrasonic pachymetry was used to determine preoperative and intraoperative corneal thicknesses and axial length of the eye, whereas optical pachymetry was used in the preoperative stage and 1 month after surgery. Corneal topography was used to determine the preoperative and postoperative mean curvature of the anterior surface of the cornea over 3 and 5-mm diameter regions. Comparative statistical analysis of the retrospective data series was performed. RESULTS: A highly significant reduction of IOP readings is found after LASIK for both myopic and hyperopic eyes. The reduction is stable 1 year after LASIK. In the case of myopic eyes, the reduction has a highly significant linear correlation with the amount of tissue ablated in the central region of the cornea. CONCLUSIONS: Pneumotonometric IOP readings after LASIK are reduced, without recovering preoperative values even 1 year after surgery, because of flap cutting and tissue removal in the central region of the cornea. The contribution of flap cutting is estimated to be (1.6+/-0.8) mm Hg, whereas ablation contributes an additional (0.029+/-0.003) mm Hg/microm of removed tissue. This effect should be considered when evaluating the accuracy of IOP measurements in LASIK patients who are at risk for developing glaucoma.

RESUMO

We have measured sub-shot-noise quantum correlations of spatial fluctuations in the far-field image of the parametric fluorescence created in a type I beta-barium-borate nonlinear crystal. Imaging is performed at very low light level (0.15 photons per pixel) with an electron multiplying charge coupled device camera. Experimental results overcome the standard quantum limit shot-noise level without subtraction of the variance of the detection noise.
