We have developed a novel polymer brush surface exhibiting autonomous swelling-deswelling changes driven by the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction, that is, the self-oscillating polymer brush. In this system, the ruthenium tris(2,2'-bipyridine) [Ru(bpy)3] catalyst-conjugated polymer chains are densely packed on the solid substrate. It is expected that the BZ reaction in the polymer brush would be influenced by the immobilization effect of the catalyst. To clarify the effect of the immobilization of the catalyst on the self-oscillating polymer brush, the self-oscillating behavior of the polymer brush was investigated by comparing it with that of other self-oscillating polymer materials, the free polymer, and the gel particle under various initial substrate concentrations. The initial substrate dependency of the oscillating period for the polymer brush was found to be different from those for the free polymer and the gel particle. Furthermore, the oscillatory waveform was analyzed on the basis of the Field-Körös-Noyes model. These investigations revealed that the dense immobilization of the self-oscillating polymer on the surface restricted accessibility for the Ru(bpy)3 moiety. These findings would be helpful in understanding the reaction-diffusion mechanism in the polymer brush, which is a novel reaction medium for the BZ reaction.

The "Just-in-Time system" improves productivity and efficiency through cost reduction while it makes workers work in a standing posture. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of postural hypotension in females during prolonged standing work, and to discuss preventive methods. Twelve female static standing workers (mean age+/-standard deviation; 32+/-14 yr old), 6 male static standing workers (30+/-4 yr old), 10 female walking workers (27+/-7 yr old) and 9 female desk workers (31+/-5 yr old) in a certain telecommunications equipment manufacturing factory agreed to participate in this study. All participants received an interview with an occupational physician, and performed the standing up test before working and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) while working. Although the blood pressure of the standing up test did not differ among the groups, mean pulse rates on standing up significantly increased in every group. Hypotension rates in the female standing workers' group by ABPM were 9 persons of 12 participants (75%) for systolic blood pressure (SBP), and were 11 persons of 12 participants (92%) for diastolic blood pressure (DBP). There were significantly higher than those in the female desk workers' group, none of 9 participants (0%) for SBP and 2 of 9 participants (22%) for DBP. The hypotension rates both male standing and female walking worker groups did not differ. Because all 8 workers who were found to have postural hypotension by the standing up test had decreased SBP and/or DBP by ABPM, it is suggested that persons at high risk of postural hypotension during standing work could be screened by the standing up test. The mechanism of postural hypotension may be a decrease of venous return due to leg swelling, and neurocardiogenic or vasovagal response. Preventing the congestion of the lower limbs by walking, managing standing time and wearing elastic hose to keep the amount of the venous return could prevent postural hypotension during prolonged standing work.

This study clarified relationships between morningness-eveningness typology and cumulative fatigue or depressive state in Japanese male workers. 959 male chemical factory workers answered a questionnaire that included the MEQ, SDS, CFSI, age, marital status, sleep indexes, life habits, and labor load. Logistic regression analysis was performed with SDS and CFSI as objective variables. We obtained valid responses from 884 subjects, who were classified according to MEQ into definitely morning type (4.1%), moderately morning type (38.6%), intermediate type (55.1%), moderately evening type (2.3%), and definitely evening type (0%). The results of logistic regression analysis show that the odds ratio of a subscale among CFSI, chronic fatigue in the moderately evening type (3.33, p=0.046) was elevated compared with that in the intermediate type (2.07, p=0.004). However, the odds ratio of SDS (1.67, p=0.028) and two subscales among CFSI, decreased vitality (1.67, p=0.021), and depressive feelings (2.02, p=0.001), for which significant relationships were found only in the intermediate type, were higher in the moderately evening type than in the intermediate type. These results suggest that relationships between cumulative fatigue or depressive state and circadian typology exist among workers independent of working hours, sleep indexes, or life habits.
