RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gorham-Stout disease is a rare condition characterized by unifocal and massive type IV osteolysis (variant of idiopathic nonhereditary osteolytic disease) with a slow progression, which is self-limiting for some years. It is characterized by recurrent vascular tumors with disruption of the anatomical architecture and intraosseous proliferation of vascular channels that leads to the destruction and resorption of the bone matrix. The aim of this study is to present the clinical features of this disease, as well as the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment, with a review of the reported cases. CASE REPORTS: We describe two cases of Gorham-Stout disease between 2013 and 2017 with surgical interventions, follow-up and results. Case one involves an 11-year-old male with involvement of the left iliac bone, with adequate evolution after a surgical procedure with a lyophilized cadaveric tricortical bone allograft. Case two involves a 6-year-old male with cervical spine C1-C3 repercussion; in the protocol for surgical treatment, he presented with signs of spinal cord compression and died. CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of Gorham-Stout disease is made by exclusion, and its clinical presentation varies widely, from spontaneous remission to a fatal outcome.

RESUMO

A transcriptomic approach has been used to identify genes predominantly expressed in maize (Zea mays) scutellum during maturation. One of the identified genes is oil body associated protein1 (obap1), which is transcribed during seed maturation predominantly in the scutellum, and its expression decreases rapidly after germination. Proteins similar to OBAP1 are present in all plants, including primitive plants and mosses, and in some fungi and bacteria. In plants, obap genes are divided in two subfamilies. Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) genome contains five genes coding for OBAP proteins. Arabidopsis OBAP1a protein is accumulated during seed maturation and disappears after germination. Agroinfiltration of tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana) epidermal leaf cells with fusions of OBAP1 to yellow fluorescent protein and immunogold labeling of embryo transmission electron microscopy sections showed that OBAP1 protein is mainly localized in the surface of the oil bodies. OBAP1 protein was detected in the oil body cellular fraction of Arabidopsis embryos. Deletion analyses demonstrate that the most hydrophilic part of the protein is responsible for the oil body localization, which suggests an indirect interaction of OBAP1 with other proteins in the oil body surface. An Arabidopsis mutant with a transfer DNA inserted in the second exon of the obap1a gene and an RNA interference line against the same gene showed a decrease in the germination rate, a decrease in seed oil content, and changes in fatty acid composition, and their embryos have few, big, and irregular oil bodies compared with the wild type. Taken together, our findings suggest that OBAP1 protein is involved in the stability of oil bodies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prior research shows a link between alcohol use and problematic Internet use among adolescents. This relationship likely indicates a vulnerability to addiction; however, little is known about factors that may increase this vulnerability. One potential factor is social motivation. Adolescents often engage in Internet use and alcohol use as a way of connecting socially. This study examines the moderating effects of social motivation for Internet use on the relationship between problematic Internet use and alcohol use among adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to 582 adolescents selected randomly from one middle school and one high school in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Participants answered questions related to demographics/background (including reasons for Internet use), problematic Internet use, and alcohol use. Hierarchical regression modeling examined the moderating effects of social Internet use on problematic Internet use and alcohol use, controlling for age and gender. RESULTS: Social Internet use and problematic Internet use accounted for a significant amount of variance in alcohol use (R2 = .126, F(4, 575) = 20.77, p < .001). When the interaction term was entered, social Internet use was found to moderate the relationship between problematic Internet use and alcohol use (ß = .525, t = 3.293, p = .001), and the direct effects of social Internet use (ß = -.062, t = -0.663, p = .507) and problematic Internet use (ß = -.129, t = -1.053, p = .293) were no longer significant. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the role that social connections may play in contributing to problematic Internet use and alcohol use among adolescents. Interventions aimed at preventing problematic and addictive behaviors among adolescents should address the role of social motivations.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The effect of smoke-free spaces on the use of electronic cigarettes has not been empirically demonstrated. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the influence of smoke-free and vape policies on the use of electronic cigarettes in young adults and adults. METHODS: A systematic review was carried out according to PRISMA criteria in the Web of Science, PubMed and SCOPUS databases. Keywords used were: Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, Smoke-Free Policy, Young Adult and Adult. We included studies that analyzed the use of electronic cigarettes in smoke-free spaces in adults aged fifteen years and older. The search was conducted from January 2010 to March 2022. Risk of bias was analyzed with the Mixed Methods Assessment Tool. RESULTS: The search identified 861 records. A total of 840 records were excluded because they did not meet the inclusion criteria. The final sample included ten studies on smoke-free spaces, six studies on vape-free spaces and five studies on smoke-free spaces and vape-free spaces. The main risk of bias in the studies was the sampling and measurements used. Most studies associate the use of electronic cigarettes and smoke-free spaces. CONCLUSIONS: Studies suggest that the use of electronic cigarettes and smoke-free spaces and vape are associated. Studies with higher quality of evidence and simultaneous implementation of smoke-free and vape-free spaces are required.

AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze the results of minimum access surgery in comparison with conventional surgery, especially in relation to post-operative (PO) mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was retrospective observational study, employing regressions, and bivariate correlations in the statistical analysis. A total of 114 patients over 65 years of age referred to cardiac surgery: 57 subjects in the minimum access group and 57 subjects in the sternotomy group. The main variables of interest were: demographic variables, PO course, mainly mortality, as well as duration of admission to critical care and total admission time. RESULTS: The mean age was 73.11 years, with 52.6% of women and 47.4% of men, and no significant differences between the pre-operative characteristics of either group. Regarding mortality, this was lower in the minimum access group, statistically significant in the analysis using bivariate correlations. CONCLUSIONS: Aortic valve replacement using a minimally invasive approach is a safe technique in our environment, despite its necessary learning curve.

BACKGROUND: The negative work climate influences the maladjustment of the staff and there are labor, physiological and psychological consequences in the workers. Work stress can appear as a result of the relationship between the individual, the work environment and the individual perception of threatening factors derived from work, which endangers physical, psychological and social well-being and increases the probability of alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption is a frequent behavior in the working population, as a negative coping with stress. The objective of this work was to know the state of the art of the relationship between the work environment, work stress and alcohol consumption in workers. METHODS: Systematic review of primary studies in English, Portuguese and Spanish from 2009 to 2019, the study population was workers of both sexes. Search in multiple databases: PubMed, Scielo, Scopus, EBSCO Host, Redalyc; the Google Scholar search engine was used to obtain full-text documents. Three reviewers participated in the data selection and extraction process independently, agreeing on the results. RESULTS: 533 studies were found, of which 17 met the eligibility criteria. An association was identified between the work environment (work environment) and/or work stress with the consumption of alcohol in the working population, a meta-analysis was also analyzed which concludes that the workers who presented greater work stress were low-risk drinkers of 20 g/day (2 UBEs) for men and 10 g/day (1 UBE) for women; and risk drinkers with 40 g/d (4 UBEs/day) in men and >20-25 g/d (2-2.5 UBEs/day) in women. CONCLUSIONS: The work environment and work stress predict alcohol consumption and the type of alcohol consumption in workers.

This article presents evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for the provision of healthcare services to address sexuality for people living with epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Currently, a lack of EB-specific research limits these services to sexual health assessment and intervention strategies designed for the general population. Due to the unique challenges of EB, a rare skin-fragility condition causing blistering responses to minor skin trauma and other systemic and secondary complications, condition-specific strategies are needed to support people with EB in achieving valued sexual lifestyles. This CPG represents the work of an international panel comprised of thirteen members including a medical doctor, nurses, psychologists, a social worker, an occupational therapist, and patient population involvement members living with EB. It describes the development of EB-specific recommendations for two primary domains of assessment and intervention related to sexuality: psychosocial and mechanical. Following a rigorous evidence-based guideline development process, this CPG establishes the first internationally actionable clinical practice recommendations for sexuality-related assessment and intervention for this population. Future research priorities are identified. Supplemental materials included provide additional support to clinicians in developing the necessary understanding and skills to promote equity and efficacy in this care domain.

RESUMO

The aim of this work was to gain understanding, using the self-transcendence theory, of the perspective of the alcoholic patient. This was a qualitative study using the grounded theory method. Eight semistructured interviews were conducted with alcohol-dependent individuals. Eleven categories emerged that allowed for understanding the process of becoming alcohol dependent to later seeking help and maintaining abstinence through the intervention program developed by Alcoholics Anonymous.

RESUMO

Symptomatic severe aortic stenosis is the most prevalent surgical pathology in cardiac surgery, and its isolated replacement has historically been performed by means of complete middle sternotomy. However, a great revolution has recently taken place, especially after the arrival of sutureless aortic prostheses that, together with a new impulse by cardiac surgery towards a less invasive course, has caused the replacement of said valve to be carried out more and more frequently due to these prostheses and minor access incisions. For this reason, we carried out a review of the cases operated on in our service from the beginning of the minimum access surgery program, comparing them with the results of the cases operated at the same time using conventional surgery.

This work sought to determine the association between stressful events, spirituality, program participation and alcohol consumption in participants of the AA 12-step program. The study used a descriptive correlation and predictive method. The population was comprised by members from AA, Mexico. A simple random sampling by clusters was performed, the sample consisted of 72 AA participants with 95% CI. The Spiritual Perspective Scale and the Social Readjustment Rating Scale were used. Stressful events are negatively and significantly related to alcohol consumption (rs = -0.316, p = 0.007), this indicates that the higher the number of stressors, the lower the number of days without alcohol consumption; participation in the program was positively and significantly related to alcohol consumption (rs = 0.776, p = 0.001), which indicates that greater years of participation means greater number of days without alcohol consumption. Spirituality showed no significant relationship (p > 0.05), there is also a significant effect of participation in the program and age on alcohol consumption (R2 = 65.2%, p = 0.001). Participation in the AA program is related to and has an effect on the number of days without alcohol consumption.

A compositional study was performed on fruiting-body powder of the culinary-medicinal oyster mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus for applications as a nutraceutical/functional food. Carbohydrates (55 g/100 g dry weight [dw]) and proteins (27.45 g/100 g dw, with an in vitro digestibility of 75%) appear to be the major components, but fat content was low (4 g/100 g dw). Pleurotus powder has important micronutrients such as minerals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Mg, and Co) and ascorbic acid, as well as nonnutrients (i.e., phenolics) with antioxidant potential. A powder-derived aqueous extract had a phenolic compound content of 138 mg/100 g that showed 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging and inhibition of membrane-lipid peroxidation activities of 58.3% and 61.4%, respectively. The presence of ß-1,3-1,6-D-glucans was also demonstrated (1.54 g/100 g). An acute toxicity test proved that Pleurotus powder was safe after oral administration to both male and female mice at a dose of 2000 mg/kg. The combination of rich nutritional composition, bioactivity, and safety in P. ostreatus fruiting-body powder highlights its potential as a nutraceutical agent promoting health and life quality.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare frictional resistance among conventional, passive and active selfligating brackets using Finite Elements Analysis (FEA). Seventynine (79) slide tests were performed by combining an upper first bicuspid conventional bracket, 0.018" stainless steel wires and 0.010" ligature by means of an INSTRON 3345 load system to obtain average maximum static frictional resistance (MSFR). This value was compared to the FR (frictional resistance) obtained by simulation of a slide of the same combination by FEA following conventional bracket modeling by means of Computer Aided Design (CAD). Once the FEA was validated, bracket CADs were designed (upper right first bicuspid conventional, active and passive selfligating bracket) and bracket properties calculated. MSFR was compared among conventional, active and passive selfligating brackets with different alloys and archwire cross sections such as 0.018", 0.019" x 0.025"and 0.020" x 0.020". Passive selfligating brackets had the lowest MSFR, followed by conventional brackets and active selfligating brackets. In conventional brackets, a 0.018" archwire produced a linear pattern of stress with maximum concentration at the center. Conversely, stress in 0.020 x 0.020" and 0.019 x 0.025" archwires was distributed across the width of the slot. The highest normal forces were 1.53 N for the 0.018" archwire, 4.85 N for the 0.020 x 0.020" archwire and 8.18 N for the 0.019 x 0.025" archwire. Passive selfligating brackets presented less frictional resistance than conventional and active selfligating brackets. Regardless of bracket type, greater contact area between the slot and the archwire and the spring clip increased frictional resistance.

Abstract Symptomatic severe aortic stenosis is the most prevalent surgical pathology in cardiac surgery, and its isolated replacement has historically been performed by means of complete middle sternotomy.

Abstract Background: The school climate is a protective factor for substance use. Objective: To identify the association between school climate and substance use in adolescents. Methodology: Predictive descriptive-correlational study. Single-stage cluster sampling and a sample of 227 students aged 15 to 18 years. A Personal Traits and Drug Consumption Identity Card and the School Climate Survey (MDS3) were applied. Results: Participants had a positive perception of safety (OR = 0.904; p < 0.01). There was less alcohol consumption in the last week, explaining 8.2% of the variance. Although a positive school climate does not predict tobacco use, a positive perception of the school environment results in a lower probability of tobacco use in the last year (OR = 0.884; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Although a positive perception of safety in the school climate is associated with no alcohol consumption in the last week, it does not predict tobacco use.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal helminths are pathogens for domestic animals and provide a source of potential infection for humans. OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of intestinal helminths in domestic dogs was determined in a province-wide survey in Quindío Province, Colombia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample size was calculated based upon the data of the 2003 antirabies vaccination program in Quindio. Information in the form of an epidemiological questionnaire was provided by dog owners. Fecal samples from dogs were analyzed by Ritchie's concentration method. RESULTS: Of 324 samples, 67.6% were from purebred dog races and 32.4% were mongrels. A 22.2% prevalence for intestinal helminthes was found. Ancylostoma caninum was the most prevalent parasite (13.9%), followed by Trichuris vulpis (4.3%), Toxocara canis (2.5%), and Strongyloides stercoralis (4.0%). Multiparasite infestations were observed in 2.46% of the dogs. CONCLUSION: Presence of parasites was strongly correlated with age and degree of association with the open streets. Control programs are recommended for helminth surveillance in human and canine populations.
