Objective: To explore the efficacy and effective node of short-term personalized vestibular rehabilitation (ST-PVR) in treating acute unilateral vestibulopathy (AUVP). Methods: A randomized controlled trial was carried out. The AUVP patients who were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from July 2022 to March 2023 were selected and randomized to the vestibular rehabilitation (VR) group and control group via computer-generated randomization. Standard care was the medical treatment with betahistine and prednisolone. Meanwhile, the VR group received ST-PVR. All the patients completed the baseline assessment and underwent follow-up assessments at 1 month and 3 months after the treatment. The assessments were consisted of spontaneous nystagmus (NYS), Romberg test (ROM), head thrust test (HTT), visual analogue scale (VAS) for vertigo, dizziness handicap inventory scale (DHI), activities-specific balance confidence scale (ABC), caloric test using video-electronystagmograph (VNG), and video-head impulse test (vHIT). The measurement data that did not conform to normal distribution were represented by M (Q1, Q3). Generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used to analyze the influence of the ST-PVR on the values of these clinical indicators and the VR grading score. The values of clinical indicators and the VR grading score were compared between the two groups at each follow-up point. Results: Seventy-one AUVP patients were included, with 35 cases in the VR group [14 males and 21 females, aged 51 (33, 55) years] and 36 cases in control group [17 males and 19 females, aged 46 (34, 59) years]. There were statistically significant differences in the impact of ST-PVR on the values of clinical indicators between the two groups (ABC: ß=10.89, P<0.001; VAS: ß=-1.64, P<0.001; DHI: ß=-8.70, P<0.001; NYS: ß=26.73, P<0.001; vHIT: ß=1.41, P=0.047; the VR grading score: ß=1.03, P=0.045). The assessments of the VR group in the positive rate of NYS [14.3% (5/35) vs 50.0% (18/36), P<0.001], ROM [48.6% (17/35) vs 55.6% (20/36), P<0.001], directional preponderance (DP) [34.3% (12/35) vs 75.0% (27/36), P<0.001] and DHI [26 (22, 32) vs 36 (30, 60), P=0.001] were significantly lower than that of the control group at 1 month after the treatment. The results showed a statistically significant difference in ABC [88 (80, 90) vs 76 (61, 88), P<0.001], VAS [2 (1, 3) vs 3 (2, 5), P<0.001] at 3-months after the treatment. The VR grading score of the VR group was improved significantly than those of the control group at 1 month after treatment [21 (17, 21) vs 16 (13, 20), P=0.001]. Conclusion: ST-PVR could improve the results of clinical indicators and VR grading score of the AUVP patients effectively after 1 month of the systematical treatment, and alleviate the symptoms and signs of dizziness in the acute phase as early as possible.

Powdery mildew (Pm) is one of the most harmful diseases in wheat. Three Pm-resistance genes, Pm3, Pm21, and Pm8, have been cloned but most Pm3/Pm8 alleles have lost their resistance to Pm in hexaploid wheat. In this study, a new Pm3 homolog gene (TmPm3) was isolated from Triticum monococcum L. using a homology-based cloning strategy, being the first report of a functional Pm3 homolog gene from a diploid wheat species. The transient expression of TmPm3 in leaf epidermal cells showed that over-expressed TmPm3 could significantly inhibit the penetration of Blumeria graminis f. sp tritici conidia spores and the formation of haustoria. Sequence analysis of Pm3 alleles shed new light on the evolution of Pm3 genes, providing a better understanding of the molecular basis of disease resistance. This study also suggested that homology-based cloning of resistance genes is a feasible method for the isolation of functional resistance genes from wheat germplasm.

Placental vascular formation and blood flow are crucial for fetal survival, growth and development, and arginine regulates vascular development and function. This study determined the effects of dietary arginine or N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) supplementation during late gestation of sows on the microRNAs, vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression in umbilical vein. Twenty-seven landrace×large white sows at day (d) 90 of gestation were assigned randomly to three groups and fed the following diets: a control diet and the control diet supplemented with 1.0% L-arginine or 0.10% NCG. Umbilical vein of fetuses with body weight around 2.0 kg (oversized), 1.5 kg (normal) and 0.6 kg (intrauterine growth restriction, IUGR) were obtained immediately after farrowing for miR-15b, miR-16, miR-221, miR-222, VEGFA and eNOS real-time PCR analysis. Compared with the control diets, dietary Arg or NCG supplementation enhanced the reproductive performance of sows, significantly increased (P<0.05) plasma arginine and decreased plasma VEGF and eNOS (P<0.05). The miR-15b expression in the umbilical vein was higher (P<0.05) in the NCG-supplemented group than in the control group. Objective: To investigate the effect of hypochloric acid on Escherichia coli biofilm and the clinical efficacy of hypochloric acid for wounds with Escherichia coli infection. Methods: One strain of Escherichia coli with the strongest bacterial biofilm forming ability among the strains isolated from specimens in 25 patients (16 males and 9 females, aged 32-67 years) from five clinical departments of the 940th Hospital of the Joint Logistic Support Force was collected for the experimental study from September to December 2019. The Escherichia coli was cultured with hypochloric acid at 162.96, 81.48, 40.74, 20.37, 10.18, 5.09, 2.55, 1.27, 0.64, and 0.32 µg/mL respectively to screen the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of hypochloric acid. The Escherichia coli was cultured with hypochloric acid at the screened MBC for 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 60 min respectively to screen the shortest bactericidal time of hypochloric acid. The biofilm formation of Escherichia coli was observed by scanning electron microscopy at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h of incubation, respectively. After 72 h of culture, hypochloric acid at 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 times of MBC was respectively added to Escherichia coli to screen the minimum biofilm eradicate concentration (MBEC) of hypochloric acid against Escherichia coli. After hypochloric acid at 1, 2, 4, and 8 times of MBEC and sterile saline were respectively added to Escherichia coli for 10 min, the live/dead bacterial staining kit was used to detect the number of live and dead cells, with the rate of dead bacteria calculated (the number of samples was 5). From January to December 2020, 41 patients with infectious wounds meeting the inclusion criteria and admitted to the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery of the 940th Hospital of Joint Logistic Support Force of PLA were included into the prospective randomized controlled trial. The patients were divided into hypochloric acid group with 21 patients (13 males and 8 females, aged (46±14) years) and povidone iodine group with 20 patients (14 males and 6 females, aged (45±19) years) according to the random number table. Patients in the 2 groups were respectively dressed with sterile gauze soaked with hypochloric acid of 100 µg/mL and povidone iodine solution of 50 mg/mL with the dressings changed daily. Before the first dressing change and on the 10th day of dressing change, tissue was taken from the wound and margin of the wound for culturing bacteria by agar culture method and quantifying the number of bacteria. The amount of wound exudate and granulation tissue growth were observed visually and scored before the first dressing change and on the 3rd, 7th, and 10th days of dressing change. Data were statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance, Dunnett-t test, independent sample t test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, chi-square test, or Fisher's exact probability test. Results: The MBC of hypochloric acid against Escherichia coli was 10.18 µg/mL, and the shortest bactericidal time of hypochloric acid with MBC against Escherichia coli was 2 min. Escherichia coli was in a completely free state after 6 and 12 h of culture and gradually aggregated and adhered with the extension of culture time, forming a mature biofilm at 72 h of culture. The MBEC of hypochloric acid against Escherichia coli was 20.36 µg/mL. The Escherichia coli mortality rates after incubation with hypochloric acid at 1, 2, 4, and 8 times of MBEC for 10 min were significantly higher than that after incubation with sterile saline (with t values of 6.11, 25.04, 28.90, and 40.74, respectively, P<0.01). The amount of bacteria in the wound tissue of patients in hypochloric acid group on the 10th day of dressing change was 2.61 (2.20, 3.30)×104 colony forming unit (CFU)/g, significantly less than 4.77 (2.18, 12.48)×104 CFU/g in povidone iodine group (Z=2.06, P<0.05). The amounts of bacteria in the wound tissue of patients in hypochloric acid group and povidone iodine group on the 10th day of dressing change were significantly less than 2.97 (2.90, 3.04)×106 and 2.97 (1.90, 7.95)×106 CFU/g before the first dressing change (with Z values of 4.02 and 3.92, respectively, P<0.01). The score of wound exudate amount of patients in hypochloric acid group on the 10th day of dressing change was significantly lower than that in povidone iodine group (Z=2.07, P<0.05). Compared with those before the first dressing change, the scores of wound exudate amount of patients in hypochloric acid group on the 7th and 10th days of dressing change were significantly decreased (with Z values of -3.99 and -4.12, respectively, P<0.01), and the scores of wound exudate amount of patients in povidone iodine group on the 7th and 10th days of dressing change were significantly decreased (with Z values of -3.54 and -3.93, respectively, P<0.01). The score of wound granulation tissue growth of patients in hypochloric acid group on the 10th day of dressing change was significantly higher than that in povidone iodine group (Z=2.02, P<0.05). Compared with those before the first dressing change, the scores of wound granulation tissue growth of patients in hypochloric acid group on the 7th and 10th days of dressing change were significantly increased (with Z values of -3.13 and -3.67, respectively, P<0.01), and the scores of wound granulation tissue growth of patients in povidone iodine group on the 7th and 10th days of dressing change were significantly increased (with Z values of -3.12 and -3.50, respectively, P<0.01). Conclusions: Hypochloric acid can kill Escherichia coli both in free and biofilm status. Hypochloric acid at a low concentration shows a rapid bactericidal effect on mature Escherichia coli biofilm, and the higher the concentration of hypochloric acid, the better the bactericidal effect. The hypochloric acid of 100 µg/mL is effective in reducing the bacterial load on wounds with Escherichia coli infection in patients, as evidenced by a reduction in wound exudate and indirect promotion of granulation tissue growth, which is more effective than povidone iodine, the traditional topical antimicrobial agent.

Previous studies addressing the effects of acid reflux and PPI therapy on gene expression in oesophageal epithelium concentrated on inflamed tissue. We aimed to determine changes in gene expression in non-inflamed oesophageal epithelium of GERD patients. Therefore, we included 20 GERD patients with pathological total 24-hr acid exposure of 6-12% and SAP > or = 95%. Ten patients discontinued PPI treatment (PPI-), 10 took pantoprazole 40 mg bid (PPI+). Ten age/sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. Biopsies were taken from non-inflamed mucosa 6 cm and 16 cm proximal to the squamocolumnar junction (SCJ). Gene expression profiling of biopsies from 6 cm was performed on Human Genome U133 Plus 2.0 arrays (Affymetrix). Genes exhibiting a fold change >1.4 (t-test P-value < 1(E)- 4) were considered differentially expressed. Results were confirmed by real-time RT-PCR. In PPI- patients, 92 microarray probesets were deregulated. The majority of the corresponding genes were associated with cell-cell contacts, cytoskeletal reorganization and cellular motility, suggesting facilitation of a migratory phenotype. Genes encoding proteins with anti-apoptotic or anti-proliferative functions or stress-protective functions were also deregulated. No probesets were deregulated in PPI+ patients. QPCR analysis of 20 selected genes confirmed most of the deregulations in PPI- patients, and showed several deregulated genes in PPI+ patients as well. In the biopsies taken at 16 cm QPCR revealed no deregulations of the selected genes. We conclude that upon acid exposure, oesophageal epithelial cells activate a process globally known as epithelial restitution: up-regulation of anti-apoptotic, anti-oxidant and migration associated genes. Possibly this process helps maintaining barrier function.

This study was designed to determine the effect of ultra-fine Chinese herbal powder as a dietary additive on serum concentrations and apparent ileal digestibilities (AID) of amino acids (AA) in young pigs. In Experiment 1, 60 Duroc x Landrace x Yorkshire piglets weaned at 21 days of age were randomly assigned to one of three treatments, representing supplementation with 0 or 2 g/kg of the powder, or 0.2 g/kg of colistin (an antibiotic) to corn- and soybean meal-based diets (n = 20 per group). Blood samples from five piglets per group were collected on days 7, 14, and 28 to determine serum AA concentrations. In Experiment 2, 12 barrows with an average initial body weight of 7.64 kg were randomly assigned to one of the three dietary treatments, followed by surgical placement of a simple T-cannula at the terminal ileum. All of the diets contained 0.1% titanium oxide as a digestibility marker. The samples of terminal ileal digesta were collected on day 7 for determining AID of AA. Results show that dietary supplementation with the herbal powder increased (P < 0.05) serum concentrations and AID of most AA by 10-50% and 10-16%, respectively. As an indicator of improved intestinal function, AID values of calcium were also enhanced in piglets supplemented with the herbal powder. Dietary supplementation of colistin increased serum concentrations and AID values of some AA by 8-44% and 10-15%, respectively, in comparison with the non-supplemented group. These novel findings demonstrate that the herbal powder can enhance the digestibility of dietary protein and the intestinal absorption of AA into the systemic circulation in post-weaning pigs, therefore providing a new mechanism for its growth- and immunity-promoting efficacy.

Studies on nanoscale materials have received great interest in both fundamental and applied aspects in recent years. In this letter, we report the synthesis of CoOOH nanorods and their possible applications as coating materials on nickel hydroxide for high-temperature nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) cells. The morphology and structure of CoOOH nanorods and coated nickel hydroxide particles are investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The electrochemical properties in the cylindrical AA size Ni-MH cells are evaluated. Our results show that the Ni-MH cells, where the positive electrodes are composed of such nanometer sized CoOOH coatings, have a higher capacity available and good performance at elevated temperatures of >50 degrees C.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of soy isoflavones on changes in body and tissue weight and on insulin-like factor I (IGF-I) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) gene and protein expression in muscle and adipose tissues in Chinese Guangxi minipig, as a model for studying human nutrition. A total of 72 male Chinese Guangxi minipigs were fed basal diet (control, Con), low dose of soy isoflavones and high dose of soy isoflavones (HSI). The results showed that HSI increased the body weight (BW) gain and fat percentage of minipigs (P < 0.05). In addition, the serum concentrations of IGF-I and interleukin-6 were increased by high levels of soy isoflavones (P < 0.05). Furthermore, a diet containing soy isoflavones enhanced IGF-I mRNA expression levels in longissimus muscle, but decreased these levels in perirenal fat. However, the mRNA and protein expression levels of PPARγ in longissimus muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue were both increased when compared with the Con. The data indicated that soy isoflavones regulated the BW gain and fat percentage of Chinese Guangxi minipigs, which also showed changes in IGF-I system and PPARγ. However, further research is required to clarify the causative relationship.

Hexagonal nanopillars with a single InGaAs/GaAs quantum well (QW) were fabricated on a GaAs (111)B substrate by selective-area metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. The standard deviations in diameter and height of the nanopillars are about 2% and 5%, respectively. Zincblende structure and rotation twins were identified in both the GaAs and the InGaAs layers by electron diffraction. The excitation-power-density-dependent micro-photoluminescence (µ-PL) of the nanopillars was measured at 4.2, 50, 100 and 150 K. It was shown that, with increasing excitation power density, the µ-PL peak's positions shift to a higher energy, and their intensity and width increase, which were rationalized using a model that includes the effects of piezoelectricity, photon-screening and band-filling. It was also revealed that the rotation twins significantly reduce the diffusion length of the carriers in the nanopillars, compared to that in the regular semiconductors.

It has been shown that TGFBs, their receptors, or downstream targets show genetic alterations in pancreatic cancer. This study was designed to identify transcriptional alterations induced by prolonged treatment of pancreatic cancer cell lines with TGFB. The TGFB-responsive PANC-1 cell line was treated with 10-ng/ml TGFB1 for 24 hr. cDNA representational difference analysis was used to generate subtracted hybridization probes enriched for TGFB regulated genes. These probes were hybridized on gridded arrays of cDNA clones containing genes differentially expressed in pancreatic cancer. Twenty-seven distinct cDNA clones were shown to be TGFB target genes. Eleven genes were upregulated by TGFB and were associated with extracellular matrix composition and formation, including genes usually transcribed by cells of mesenchymal origin only. Transcript levels of 16 genes were downregulated by TGFB and could mainly be classified into markers of epithelial differentiation and genes involved in the transcriptional and translational machinery. In conclusion, a 24-hr treatment of PANC-1 cells with TGFB induced a loss of epithelial and a gain of mesenchymal markers. As in other tumors, this epithelial-mesenchymal transdifferentiation may be of general importance during pancreatic carcinogenesis, and may participate, e.g., in the development of the desmoplastic reaction or the acquisition of an invasive phenotype of pancreatic tumor cells. This study demonstrates the usefulness of cDNA RDA and gridded clone libraries to study the effect of signaling cascades on the expression profile of tumor cells.
