This paper investigates the optical phenomenon responsible for the colored shine that sometimes appears at the surface of ink layers in the specular direction, often called "bronzing" or "gloss differential." The prediction of this shine effect relies on the Fresnel formulas of the air/ink interface. The complex refractive index of the ink must therefore be determined, which is made difficult because of the roughness of inked printing supports. We propose a generic method that can be applied to any ink, without any prior knowledge of its composition or the printing substrate. In order to reduce light scattering, a solid colored area is printed with the studied ink on a glossy paper previously printed with black ink. By ellipsometry, we determine the effective refractive index of the sample. The intrinsic complex refractive index of the ink can then be extracted by modeling the optical response of the inked surface with a set of Gaussian oscillators, among which one of them approaches residual scattering. With this data, we could proceed to a fine colorimetric analysis of the bronzing color of some cyan, magenta, and yellow inks. In particular, we show that this gloss color is slightly shifted from the complementary of the ink's usual color in diffuse reflection.

Measurements in a van der Pauw configuration often require the use of complicated mathematical expressions or implicit relations, which may be computer-time-consuming or tedious to implement in a given software. Thus, a closed-form expression is often desirable. We propose to approximate these relations by closed-form analytical functions using only basic operators that can be easily implemented. We present explicitly the functions and the numerical values of their parameters for the cases of standard van der Pauw measurement, anisotropic resistivities, and the probe position correction factor. The discrepancy with the exact values is smaller than 10-5, which is sufficient for practical purposes.

Nowadays, making thermoelectric materials more efficient in energy conversion is still a challenge. In this work, to reduce the thermal conductivity and thus improve the overall thermoelectric performances, point and extended defects were generated in epitaxial 111-ScN thin films by implantation using argon ions. The films were investigated by structural, optical, electrical, and thermoelectric characterization methods. The results demonstrated that argon implantation leads to the formation of stable defects (up to 750 K operating temperature). These were identified as interstitial-type defect clusters and argon vacancy complexes. The insertion of these specific defects induces acceptor-type deep levels in the band gap, yielding a reduction in the free-carrier mobility. With a reduced electrical conductivity, the irradiated sample exhibited a higher Seebeck coefficient while maintaining the power factor of the film. The thermal conductivity is strongly reduced from 12 to 3 W·m-1·K-1 at 300 K, showing the influence of defects in increasing phonon scattering. Subsequent high-temperature annealing at 1573 K leads to the progressive evolution of these defects: the initial clusters of interstitials evolved to the benefit of smaller clusters and the formation of bubbles. Thus, the number of free carriers, the resistivity, and the Seebeck coefficient are almost restored but the mobility of the carriers remains low and a 30% drop in thermal conductivity is still effective (k total ∼ 8.5 W·m-1·K-1). This study shows that control defect engineering with defects introduced by irradiation using noble gases in a thermoelectric coating can be an attractive method to enhance the figure of merit of thermoelectric materials.

The effect of thiophenol layer grafted on carbon for platinum catalyst stabilization was studied. The grafted layer was prepared by reduction of 4-thiophenoldiazonium ions in the presence of Vulcan XC72 substrate. The grafted layer was characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Platinum nanoparticles prepared by the "water in oil" microemulsion method were then deposited on modified substrates and bare Vulcan XC72. The platinum stability improvement was characterized by in situ X-ray diffraction and electrochemical aging. These experiments enabled to evidence a lower crystallite growth during heat treatment under hydrogen atmosphere and a lower active surface area loss for platinum particles deposited on modified substrates compared to those deposited on bare Vulcan XC72. This stability improvement can be attributed to a better interaction between platinum particles and carbon substrate due to the thiophenol molecular bridge.

Ion-beam sputtering deposition has been used in two ways, as granular multilayers and as cosputtered film, to elaborate Ag-Si3N4 nanocermets. Multilayer deposition creates slightly oblate clusters, and cosputtering produces two cluster families: elongated clusters within the Si3N4 matrix and larger ones at the film surface. The transmittance spectra of these nanocermets are characterized by a surface plasmon resonance. In the reported research the position of this resonance is related to the morphological properties of silver nanoclusters, which are studied by transmission-electron microscopy, grazing-incidence small-angle x-ray scattering, and atomic-force microscopy.
