Early diagnosis is important for improving the outcomes of keratoconus (KC). Stable expression and a closed-loop structure of circular RNAs (circRNAs) make them ideal for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. However, the expression pattern and potential function of circRNAs in KC is not studied yet. Hence, this study explored the circRNA expression profile of KC corneas through transcriptome sequencing and circRNA expression profile analysis. The diagnostic potential of blood circRNAs for KC was explored by analysing the circRNAs' expression levels of fifty paired blood samples from patients with KC and normal controls. The results showed that 107 significantly upregulated and 145 significantly downregulated circRNAs (|fold change| ≥ 2.0, p-value <0.05) were identified in KC tissues. Eight top differently expressed circRNAs were further validated in more cornea samples. Among them, five circRNAs expressed in peripheral blood, and four circRNAs (circ_0006156, circ_0006117, circ_0000284 and circ_0001801) showed significant downregulation in KC patients' peripheral blood too. The blood circ_0000284 expression levels of early, moderate, and advanced KC patients both were significantly lower than the controls. The blood circ_0006117 expression levels present a positive correlation with corrected distance visual acuity values, and a negative correlation with back elevation values of KC eyes. Notably, the expression levels of these circRNAs distinguished KC patients from their healthy counterparts, with the area under the curve (AUC) of circ_0000284, circ_0001801, and circ_0006117 being 0.7306, 0.6871 and 0.6701, respectively. Further, the AUC value for five circRNAs under the logistic regression model was 0.8203, indicating that they can function as effective biomarkers for the KC diagnostics. In conclusion, the expression of circRNAs showed a relationship with KC, with four significantly differentially expressed circRNAs demonstrating potential as biomarkers for the disease.

Ferroptosis, triggered by discoordination of iron, thiols and lipids, leads to the accumulation of 15-hydroperoxy (Hp)-arachidonoyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (15-HpETE-PE), generated by complexes of 15-lipoxygenase (15-LOX) and a scaffold protein, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE)-binding protein (PEBP)1. As the Ca2+-independent phospholipase A2ß (iPLA2ß, PLA2G6 or PNPLA9 gene) can preferentially hydrolyze peroxidized phospholipids, it may eliminate the ferroptotic 15-HpETE-PE death signal. Here, we demonstrate that by hydrolyzing 15-HpETE-PE, iPLA2ß averts ferroptosis, whereas its genetic or pharmacological inactivation sensitizes cells to ferroptosis. Given that PLA2G6 mutations relate to neurodegeneration, we examined fibroblasts from a patient with a Parkinson's disease (PD)-associated mutation (fPDR747W) and found selectively decreased 15-HpETE-PE-hydrolyzing activity, 15-HpETE-PE accumulation and elevated sensitivity to ferroptosis. CRISPR-Cas9-engineered Pnpla9R748W/R748W mice exhibited progressive parkinsonian motor deficits and 15-HpETE-PE accumulation. Elevated 15-HpETE-PE levels were also detected in midbrains of rotenone-infused parkinsonian rats and α-synuclein-mutant SncaA53T mice, with decreased iPLA2ß expression and a PD-relevant phenotype. Thus, iPLA2ß is a new ferroptosis regulator, and its mutations may be implicated in PD pathogenesis.

Objective: To examine the in vitro inhibitory effect of flower extracts from Salvia deserta Schang (SFE) on Streptococcu smutans ( S. mutans). Methods: The inhibitory effect of SFE on planktonic S. mutans and the effect of SFE on the growth process of planktonic S. mutans were determined by the agar drilling method and the microdilution method. Crystal violet staining and MTT reduction assay were conducted to determine the effect of SFE on S. mutans biofilm formation. The effect of SFE on the production of exopolysaccharides (EPS) in S. mutans biofilm was determined by anthrone-sulfuric acid method. The intracellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in S. mutans was determined by LDH colorimetric assay. The effects of SFE on the acid-producing capacity of S. mutans was determined by pH meter. Results: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of SFE against S. mutans was 14 µg/µL. SFE of the the concentration between 1/8 MIC and MIC could inhibit the growth rate of S. mutans within 30 h and it could significantly inhibit the LDH activity compared with the control group ( P<0.0001). SFE of the concentration between 4 MIC and 1/4 MIC had an inhibitory effect on the acid production of S. mutans ( P<0.001). Moreover, it could effectively restrain the formation of S. mutans biofilm and significantly reduce the amount of EPS produced by biofilm ( P<0.01). Conclusion: SFE can effectively inhibit the activity of S. mutans and its biofilm. The mechanism of inhibiting S. mutans by SFE was preliminarily discussed as follows, it interferes with microbial adhesion and aggregation by reducing the production of bacterial EPS, thus inhibiting the formation of bacterial biofilms. In addition, it interferes with glycolysis of S. mutans by reducing the LDH activity of bacteria, thus inhibiting the acid production of S. mutans.

Retinoblastoma (RB), the most common malignant retinal tumor among children under 3 years old, is lethal if left untreated. Early diagnosis, together with timely and effective treatment, is important to improve retinoblastoma-related outcomes. Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a new class of non-coding RNAs with the capacity to regulate cellular activities, have great potential in retinoblastoma diagnosis and treatment. Recent studies have identified circular RNAs that regulate multiple cellular processes involved in retinoblastoma, including cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, migration, and invasion. Six circular RNAs (circ-FAM158A, circ-DHDDS, circ-E2F3, circ-TRHDE, circ-E2F5, and circ-RNF20) promote disease progression and metastasis in retinoblastoma and function as oncogenic factors. Other circular RNAs, such as circ-TET1, circ-SHPRH, circ-MKLN1, and circ-CUL2, play tumor suppressive roles in retinoblastoma. At present, the studies on the regulatory mechanism of circular RNAs in retinoblastoma are not very clear. The purpose of this review is to summarize recent studies on the functional roles and molecular mechanisms of circular RNAs in retinoblastoma and highlight novel strategies for retinoblastoma diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.

Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) is a key technology for high resolution and super-resolution imaging of biological cells and molecules. The spread of portable and easy-to-align SIM systems requires the development of novel methods to generate a light pattern and to shift it across the field of view of the microscope. Here we show a miniaturized chip that incorporates optical waveguides, splitters, and phase shifters, to generate a 2D structured illumination pattern suitable for SIM microscopy. The chip creates three point-sources, coherent and controlled in phase, without the need for further alignment. Placed in the pupil of a microscope's objective, the three sources generate a hexagonal illumination pattern on the sample, which is spatially translated thanks to thermal phase shifters. We validate and use the chip, upgrading a commercial inverted fluorescence microscope to a SIM setup and we image biological sample slides, extending the resolution of the microscope.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the learning curve of conformal sphincter preservation operation (CSPO) in the treatment of ultralow rectal cancer and to further explore the influencing factors of operation time. METHODS: From August 2011 to April 2020, 108 consecutive patients with ultralow rectal cancer underwent CSPO by the same surgeon in the Department of Colorectal Surgery of Changhai Hospital. The moving average and cumulative sum control chart (CUSUM) curve were used to analyze the learning curve. The preoperative clinical baseline data, postoperative pathological data, postoperative complications, and survival data were compared before and after the completion of learning curve. The influencing factors of CSPO operation time were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: According to the results of moving average and CUSUM method, CSPO learning curve was divided into learning period (1-45 cases) and learning completion period (46-108 cases). There was no significant difference in preoperative clinical baseline data, postoperative pathological data, postoperative complications, and survival data between the two stages. Compared with the learning period, the operation time (P < 0.05), blood loss (P < 0.05), postoperative flatus and defecation time (P < 0.05), liquid diet time (P < 0.05), and postoperative hospital stay (P < 0.05) in the learning completion period were significantly reduced, and the difference was statistically significant. Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that distance of tumor from anal verge (≥ 4cm vs. < 4cm, P = 0.039) and T stage (T3 vs. T1-2, P = 0.022) was independent risk factors for prolonging the operation time of CSPO. CONCLUSIONS: For surgeons with laparoscopic surgery experience, about 45 cases of CSPO are needed to cross the learning curve. At the initial stage of CSPO, beginners are recommended to select patients with ultralow rectal cancer whose distance of tumor from anal verge is less than 4 cm and tumor stage is less than T3 for practice, which can enable beginners to reduce the operation time, accumulate experience, build self-confidence, and shorten the learning curve on the premise of safety.

To investigate the responses of key enzymes involved in steroidal saponin biosynthesis of Dioscorea zingiberensis to low phosphorus stress, we designed three treatments of severe phosphorus stress, moderate phosphorus stress, and normal phosphorus level. The D. zingiberensis plants were collected at the early, middle, and late stages of treatment. The content of total steroidal saponins in different tissues of D. zingiberensis was determined by spectrophotometry for the identification of the critical stage in response to low phosphorus stress. BGI 500 sequencing platform was employed to obtain the transcript information of D. zingiberensis samples at the critical stage of low phosphorus stress, and then a transcriptome library was constructed. The correlation between the expression of genes involved in steroidal saponin biosynthesis and the content of total steroidal saponins was analyzed for the screening of the key enzyme genes in response to low phosphorus stress. Further, the expression patterns of these genes were analyzed by real-time fluorescence PCR(qRT-PCR). The content of total steroidal saponins in D. zingiberensis had obvious tissue specificity under low phosphorus stress, and the early stage of stress was particularly important for D. zingiberensis to respond to low phosphorus stress. A total of 101 593 unigenes were obtained by transcriptome sequencing, of which 77.35% were annotated in NT, NR, SwissProt, KOG, GO, and KEGG. A total of 256 transcripts of known key enzyme genes in the biosynthetic pathway of steroidal saponins were identified. The expression levels of 69 transcripts encoding 18 catalytic enzymes were significantly correlated with the content of total steroidal saponins. The qRT-PCR results showed that several key enzyme genes presented different expression patterns in four tissues under low phosphorus stress. The results indicated that the content of total steroidal saponins and the expression of key enzyme genes regulating steroidal saponin biosynthesis in D. zingensis changed under low phosphorus stress. This study provides the biological information for elucidating the molecular mechanism of steroidal saponin biosynthesis in D. zingensis exposed to low phosphorus stress.

We present a structured illumination microscopy system that projects a hexagonal pattern by the interference among three coherent beams, suitable for implementation in a light-sheet geometry. Seven images acquired as the illumination pattern is shifted laterally can be processed to produce a super-resolved image that surpasses the diffraction-limited resolution by a factor of over 2 in an exemplar light-sheet arrangement. Three methods of processing data are discussed depending on whether the raw images are available in groups of seven, individually in a stream or as a larger batch representing a three-dimensional stack. We show that imaging axially moving samples can introduce artefacts, visible as fine structures in the processed images. However, these artefacts are easily removed by a filtering operation carried out as part of the batch processing algorithm for three-dimensional stacks. The reconstruction algorithms implemented in Python include specific optimizations for calculation on a graphics processing unit and we demonstrate its operation on experimental data of static objects and on simulated data of moving objects. We show that the software can process over 239 input raw frames per second at 512 × 512 pixels, generating over 34 super-resolved frames per second at 1024 × 1024 pixels. BACKGROUND: Currently, the risk stratification of critically ill patient with chest pain is a challenge. We aimed to use machine learning approach to predict the critical care outcomes in patients with chest pain, and simultaneously compare its performance with HEART, GRACE, and TIMI scores. METHODS: This was a retrospective, case-control study in patients with acute non-traumatic chest pain who presented to the emergency department (ED) between January 2017 and December 2019. The outcomes included cardiac arrest, transfer to ICU, and death during treatment in ED. In the randomly sampled training set (70%), a LASSO regression model was developed, and presented with nomogram. The performance was measured in both training set (70% participants) and testing set (30% participants), and findings were compared with the three widely used scores. RESULTS: We proposed a LASSO regression model incorporating mode of arrival, reperfusion therapy, Killip class, systolic BP, serum creatinine, creatine kinase-MB, and brain natriuretic peptide as independent predictors of critical care outcomes in patients with chest pain. Our model significantly outperformed the HEART, GRACE, TIMI score with AUC of 0.953 (95%CI: 0.922-0.984), 0.754 (95%CI: 0.675-0.832), 0.747 (95%CI: 0.664-0.829), 0.735 (95%CI: 0.655-0.815), respectively. Consistently, our model demonstrated better outcomes regarding the metrics of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and F1 score. Similarly, the decision curve analysis elucidated a greater net benefit of our model over the full ranges of clinical thresholds. CONCLUSION: We present an accurate model for predicting the critical care outcomes in patients with chest pain, and provide substantial support to its application as a decision-making tool in ED.

BACKGROUND: To date, the fundamental pathophysiology underlying the occurrence and progression of psoriasis are still unanswered questions. Genome-wide association surveys have revealed that TNFAIP3 and TNIP1 were key biomarkers for psoriasis. Here, we intended to conduct a survey on the association between TNFAIP3 and TNIP1 gene polymorphisms and psoriasis risk. METHODS: A comprehensive search of four online databases-China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library was undertaken up to August 25, 2019. We chose allele genetic model to deal with the original data. Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the risk bias of each study. The RevMan 5.3 software was used to calculate the combined odds ratio and 95% confidence interval. RESULTS: In total, we included 13 case-control studies consist of 13,908 psoriasis patients and 20,051 controls in this work. Our results demonstrated that rs610604 in TNFAIP3 polymorphism was significantly associated with psoriasis risk using random-effect model (G vs. T, OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.09-1.31, P = 0.0002), and a significant association between rs17728338 in TNIP1 polymorphism and psoriasis vulnerability using fixed-effect model (A vs. G, OR = 1.69, 95% CI:1.58-1.80, P < 0.00001). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated that rs610604 in TNFAIP3 and rs17728338 in TNIP1 gene polymorphisms were associated with psoriasis susceptibility.

BACKGROUND: The pathological mechanisms associated with the occurrence and development of Behcet's disease (BD) are not yet known. Two large genome-wide association surveys revealed an association between interleukin (IL)-23R single nucleotide polymorphism and BD. This study aimed to investigate the association between IL-23R gene polymorphisms and BD susceptibility. METHODS: Comprehensive literature search was performed across four online databases - PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of science. The included studies had to be published before May 15, 2019. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the quality of every included study, and pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using the allele model of inheritance to evaluate the potential associations between IL-23R gene polymorphisms and BD risk. RESULTS: In all, 12 case-control studies comprising 6,926 BD patients and 10,211 controls were identified and included in this meta-analysis, in which 5 loci of IL-23R gene polymorphisms were investigated. Of these 5 loci, 2 were found to be significantly associated with BD susceptibility: rs17375018 (G vs. A, OR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.34-1.68, P < .00001) and rs924080 (T vs. C, OR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.29-1.43, P < .00001). Only a systematic review was conducted for rs12119179, rs11209032, and rs12141431, owing to the lack of sufficient data. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis indicated that rs17375018 (G/A) and rs924080 (T/C) were associated with BD susceptibility. However, association of the other IL-23R polymorphisms could not be estimated owing to the lack of studies. Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) is a chronic diffuse airway inflammatory disease, which is strongly associated with the class I human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles. Here, we report a pair of sisters who have been suffering from chronic cough, expectoration and wheezing for many years. They were previously misdiagnosed as chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma, and were recently diagnosed as diffuse panbronchiolitis. The 36-year-old elder sister suffered from diffuse panbronchiolitis complicated with pulmonary tuberculosis. The 30-year-old younger sister suffered from diffuse panbronchiolitis complicated with bronchial asthma and bronchiectasis. We have performed HLA genotyping research on the two sisters, their parents and younger brother. The results showed that all family members were positive for HLA-A24 and HLA-B13. The younger sister and mother were positive for HLA-A2. The younger brother and father were positive for HLA-A11. We suspect that the two sisters' disease susceptibility may be caused by their parents' consanguineous marriage. In this study, we reported the clinical characteristics of the two sisters with diffuse panbronchiolitis and shared the associated HLA genotyping results of this family cluster, hoping to provide reference for the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical characteristics of patients with different severity in the early outbreak of COVID-19, hoping to provide reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 95 COVID-19 patients in Wuhan Red Cross Hospital of China from January 17 to February 13, 2020. All patients were investigated with epidemiological questionnaires. Outcomes were followed up until April 1, 2020. RESULTS: There were 53 males and 42 females, aged 22-84 years (mean 57.3 years). Clinical classification included 54 cases of common type, 27 cases of severe type, and 14 cases of critical type. Six patients had been exposed to the local Huanan seafood market. There were 38 clusters of COVID-19, including 27 family clusters and 11 work unit clusters. Common symptoms included fever (86 (90.5%) of 95), cough (73 (76.8%)), and fatigue (50 (52.6%)). Laboratory findings showed that the most common abnormalities were lymphopenia (75 (78.9%)), elevated D-dimer (60 (63.2%)), and elevated C-reactive protein (56 (58.9%)) on admission. All patients had abnormal chest computed tomography, showing patchy shadows or ground-glass opacities. Severe and critical cases were older, more likely to have shortness of breath, more likely to have underlying comorbidities, and more likely to have abnormal laboratory findings than common cases. The prognosis of patients with different degrees of severity was significantly different. All common and severe patients (100%) were cured and discharged from the hospital, while 10 (71.4%) of 14 critical patients died. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 has fast transmission speed and high pathogenicity. We must assess the severity of the disease and take corresponding treatment measures as early as possible.

BACKGROUND: Aquaporin (AQP) proteins comprise a group of membrane intrinsic proteins (MIPs) that are responsible for transporting water and other small molecules, which is crucial for plant survival under stress conditions including salt stress. Despite the vital role of AQPs, little is known about them in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). RESULTS: In this study, we identified 39 aquaporin-encoding genes in cucumber that were separated by phylogenetic analysis into five sub-families (PIP, TIP, NIP, SIP, and XIP). Their substrate specificity was then assessed based on key amino acid residues such as the aromatic/Arginine (ar/R) selectivity filter, Froger's positions, and specificity-determining positions. The putative cis-regulatory motifs available in the promoter region of each AQP gene were analyzed and results revealed that their promoter regions contain many abiotic related cis-regulatory elements. Furthermore, analysis of previously released RNA-seq data revealed tissue- and treatment-specific expression patterns of cucumber AQP genes (CsAQPs). Three aquaporins (CsTIP1;1, CsPIP2;4, and CsPIP1;2) were the most transcript abundance genes, with CsTIP1;1 showing the highest expression levels among all aquaporins. Subcellular localization analysis in Nicotiana benthamiana epidermal cells revealed the diverse and broad array of sub-cellular localizations of CsAQPs. We then performed RNA-seq to identify the expression pattern of CsAQPs under salt stress and found a general decreased expression level of root CsAQPs. Moreover, qRT-PCR revealed rapid changes in the expression levels of CsAQPs in response to diverse abiotic stresses including salt, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-6000, heat, and chilling stresses. Additionally, transient expression of AQPs in N. benthamiana increased leaf water loss rate, suggesting their potential roles in the regulation of plant water status under stress conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that CsAQPs play important roles in response to salt stress. The genome-wide identification and primary function characterization of cucumber aquaporins provides insight to elucidate the complexity of the AQP gene family and their biological functions in cucumber.

Ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1), a saponin extracted from Panax ginseng, has been well documented to be effective against ischemic/reperfusion (I/R) neuronal injury. However, the underlying mechanisms remain obscure. In the present study, we investigated the roles of Nrf2 and miR-144 in the protective effects of Rg1 against I/R-induced neuronal injury. In OGD/R-treated PC12 cells, Rg1 (0.01-1 µmol/L) dose-dependently attenuated the cell injury accompanied by prolonging nuclear accumulation of Nrf2, enhancing the transcriptional activity of Nrf2, as well as promoting the expression of ARE-target genes. The activation of the Nrf2/ARE pathway by Rg1 was independent of disassociation with Keap1, but resulted from post-translational regulations. Knockdown of Nrf2 abolished all the protective changes of Rg1 in OGD/R-treated PC12 cells. Furthermore, Rg1 treatment significantly decreased the expression of miR-144, which downregulated Nrf2 production by targeting its 3'-untranlated region after OGD/R. Knockdown of Nrf2 had no effect on the expression of miR-144, suggesting that miR-144 was an upstream regulator of Nrf2. We revealed that there was a direct binding between Nrf2 and miR-144 in PC12 cells. Application of anti-miR-144 occluded the activation of the Nrf2/ARE pathway by Rg1 in OGD/R-treated PC12 cells. In tMCAO rats, administration of Rg1 (20 mg/kg) significantly alleviated ischemic injury, and activated Nrf2/ARE pathway. The protective effects of Rg1 were abolished by injecting of AAV-HIF-miR-144-shRNA into the predicted ischemic penumbra. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that Rg1 alleviates oxidative stress after I/R through inhibiting miR-144 activity and subsequently promoting the Nrf2/ARE pathway at the post-translational level.

The search for high-performance organic redox-active materials for non-aqueous redox-flow batteries remains a key challenge. Organic radicals and aromatic imides are two promising classes of redox-active materials with complementary advantages, such as the specific capacity, operating voltage, and stability, etc. Herein, this work reports two stable bifunctional radicals synthesized by the C-C coupling of redox-active phenoxyl radicals and perylene diimides (PDIs, 1. ) or benzo[ghi]perylene triimides (BPTIs, 2. ). The incorporation of electron-deficient PDIs or BPTIs into phenoxyl radicals is desired, to not only increase the number of redox-active groups per molecule and, thus, improve their specific capacities, but also to increase the redox potential and the stability of the phenoxyl radicals and, thus, enhances their battery voltages and cycle lives. When serving as the redox-active species in the catholyte of a non-aqueous static redox-flow battery, both radicals 1. and 2. exhibited a cooperatively enhanced performance with an unprecedented initial discharge voltage up to 3.12 V versus Li+ /Li, which is the hitherto most presentable potential for imide- and radical-based energy storage materials in redox-flow batteries.

RESUMO

A rule of thumb, denoted as IGA-rule 17, has been developed to describe the temperature and cutoff wavelength-dependent dark currents of wavelength-extended InGaAs photodetectors in a 2-3 µm band. The validity and limitations of the rule are discussed. This rule is intended as an index for device developers to evaluate their technologies in processing, a simple tool for device users to estimate reachable performance at various conditions in their design, and an effective bridge between the two.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are an emerging class of biopharmaceuticals. As such, there are no specific guidelines addressing impurity limits and qualification requirements. The current ICH guidelines on impurities, Q3A (Impurities in New Drug Substances), Q3B (Impurities in New Drug Products), and Q6B (Specifications: Test Procedures and Acceptance Criteria for Biotechnological/Biological Products) do not adequately address how to assess small molecule impurities in ADCs. The International Consortium for Innovation and Quality in Pharmaceutical Development (IQ) formed an impurities working group (IWG) to discuss this issue. This white paper presents a strategy for evaluating the impact of small molecule impurities in ADCs. This strategy suggests a science-based approach that can be applied to the design of control systems for ADC therapeutics. The key principles that form the basis for this strategy include the significant difference in molecular weights between small molecule impurities and the ADC, the conjugation potential of the small molecule impurities, and the typical dosing concentrations and dosing schedule. The result is that exposure to small impurities in ADCs is so low as to often pose little or no significant safety risk.

Objective To summarize the clinical features of eosinophilic lung diseases(ELD). Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical manifestations,laboratory findings,accessory examination results,and pathology of 40 patients who were diagnosed with ELD and hospitalized in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2013 to December 2016.Results There were 19 males and 21 females,and the average age was(48.58±18.25) years.The diagnoses included allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis(n=20),eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis(also known as churg-strauss syndrome)(n=10),chronic eosinophilic pneumonia(n=8),parasitic infection(n=1),and drug-induced eosinophilic pneumonia(n=1).Eosinophils counts in peripheral blood were increased in 35 patients(87.5%),and eosinophils counts in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids increased in 17 of 18 patients(94.4%).Arterial blood gas analysis showed varying degrees of hypoxemia in 23 patients(57.5%),and pulmonary function test showed ventilatory dysfunction in 27 patients(67.5%) and defect in diffusion capacity in 12 patients(30.0%).Chest CT revealed bilateral flaky,streaky,or diffuse ground-glass infiltrates and consolidations;in addition,central cylindrical bronchiectasis and mucous plugging with "finger-in-glove" pattern were seen in patients with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis.Diffuse eosinophil infiltration was revealed in lung or other tissue biopsy.Glucocorticoids alone or combined with other therapies were effective in most patients.Conclusions ELD has a wide range of clinical presentations and can easily be misdiagnosed.Increased eosinophils count in peripheral blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluids combined with infiltration manifestations in chest imaging are helpful for the diagnosis of ELD.Oral administration of glucocorticoids is the primary therapy for ELD.
