RESUMO

Hip resurfacing arthroplasty can be performed through anterolateral or posterior approaches. Concerns have been raised about the posterior approach due to the perceived loss ofthe crucial posterolateral blood supply to the femoral head and neck. The trochanteric 'flip' osteotomy method, pioneered by Ganz, with a blood supply conserving capsulotomy was therefore developed to allow this operation to be performed through an anterolateral incision. The repair of the trochanteric osteotomy has, however, shown an incidence of non-union and does not permit full weight bearing in the immediate post-operative period. Through our current practice we have developed a technique for hip resurfacing through an anterolateral modified Hardinge approach that does not require trochanteric osteotomy, preserves the femoral neck blood supply and allows full weight bearing in the immediate post operative-period.

RESUMO

Early operative repair is the currently accepted treatment of distal biceps rupture. However, we describe 6 patients (with 7 ruptures), 5 of whom are in the armed forces with distal biceps tendon ruptures who, as a result of delays in presentation, were treated non-operatively. The subsequent clinical success of these patients (with three excellent, three good and one poor result), has led us to question whether the role of non-operative treatment has been underestimated within the orthopaedic, military and sports medicine literature. The more rapid rehabilitation of conservatively treated ruptures may well have implications for treatment of armed forces personnel.

RESUMO

Petite deletion mapping helped to generate a fine-structure genetic map of the Oli-2 region of the mitochondrial genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here we report the DNA sequence analysis of the Oli-2 region from two drug-resistant alleles (Olir2-76 and Ossr1-92) which are located in the gene for subunit-6 of mitochondrial ATPase, in agreement with their genetic locations on the mitochondrial genome. An analysis of the corresponding amino-acid substitutions is also presented in the context of protein-antibiotic interactions.

RESUMO

Preincubation of coupled submitochondrial particles with low concentrations of triorganotin compounds results in complete inhibition of the oligomycin-sensitive ATPase activity without any significant effect on the rate of succinate-driven ATP synthesis. The residual ATP synthetic activity is inhibited by oligomycin and uncouplers. The differential inhibition of ATP synthesis and hydrolysis by the triorganotin compounds examined suggests that the two processes are not 'mirror images' of each other, but that they occur through different routes and that the F1F0-ATPase is at least bifunctional.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: As a result of a single spinal injury seen at Frimley Park Hospital, we reviewed the injuries recorded at the Army School of Physical Training since December 1996. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective review of all acute accidents and injuries recorded in the Accident Book since its inception. RESULTS: Over 75% of the injuries that were serious enough to result in soldiers having their training terminated were as a direct result of gymnastic events such as vaulting, trampolining and somersaults. These events were also responsible for most of the small number of career-threatening injuries. CONCLUSIONS: This raises questions about the inclusion of gymnastic events in course training programmes, especially when considering its relevance to army training in general.

RESUMO

The work of the family physician is occasionally enlivened by an unusual patient problem. The particular episode described and discussed in this case report called into question the moral and ethical standards of both medicine and society. Issues of responsibility for unacceptable behaviour by an individual are examined within an historical context, and the reader is left to ponder his or her own answer to the questions raised.

RESUMO

Genetic analysis of venturicidin-resistant mutants has revealed the presence of both nuclear and mitochondrial genes responsible for determining venturicidin sensitivity/resistance in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Recombination studies show that the mutation with phenotype VENR is situated at mitochondrial locus OL I and is therefore extremely useful of future genetic manipulations as it gives a unique phenotype to this locus distinguishable from the second oligomycin locus OL II. The mutations with phenotype VENR OLYR are linked to oligomycin locus OL I and have been allocated a new mitochondrial locus, namely OL III. Three factor croses involving the venturicidin mutations at loci OL I and OL III have shown them to freely recombine with the other mitochondrial loci R I, R III and OL II. The mitochondrial genetic map is therefore represented as four 'recombinational linkage groups'. A fifth linkage group is also specified for mutants with phenotype VENR TETR, and is probably located on a separate DNA molecule from the four other groups.

RESUMO

ATP synthase preparations [complex V, proton-translocatin ATPase (adenosine triphosphatase) and oligomycin-sensitive ATPase ] contain stoicheiometric amounts of lipoic acid residues (up to 6mol of lipoic acid/mol of ATPase complex) and catalyse net ATP synthesis in an uncoupler-and oligomycin-sensitive reaction utilizing dihydrolipoate, oleoyl-CoA and oleic acid, or in a reaction utilizing oleoyl-S-lipoate. The terminal reactions of oxidative phosphorylation are thus analogous to those of substrate-level phosphorylation.
