BACKGROUND: Kidney stones exhibit a robust correlation with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective of this research is to investigate the correlation between kidney stones and Life's Essential 8 (LE8), a newly updated assessment of cardiovascular health (CVH), among adults in the United States. METHODS: In this study, which analyzed data from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we employed LE8 scores (ranging from 0 to 100) as the independent variable, classifying them into low, moderate, and high CVH categories. The research examined the relationship between LE8 scores and kidney stones by using multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models, with kidney stones as the dependent variable. RESULTS: Out of the 14,117 participants in this research, the weighted mean LE8 score was 69.70 ± 0.27. After accounting for confounding factors, there was an inverse association between higher LE8 scores and the likelihood of developing kidney stones (OR of 0.81 per 10-point increase, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.77-0.85), demonstrating a non-linear dose-response pattern. Similar patterns were observed for health behaviors, health factor scores, and kidney stones. Stratified analyses demonstrated a stable negative correlation between LE8 scores and kidney stones across different subgroups. CONCLUSION: LE8 and its subscale scores exhibited a robust and inverse correlation with the occurrence of kidney stones. Encouraging adherence to optimal CVH levels has the potential to serve as an effective strategy in preventing and minimizing the occurrence of kidney stones.

BACKGROUND: Recent interest in the Non-High Density to High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol ratio (NHHR) has emerged due to its potential role in metabolic disorders. However, the connection between NHHR and the development of kidney stones still lacks clarity. The primary goal of this research is to explore how NHHR correlates with kidney stone incidence. METHODS: An analysis was conducted on the data collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2018, focusing on adults over 20 years diagnosed with kidney stones and those with available NHHR values. Employing weighted logistic regression and Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) models, NHHR levels' correlation with kidney stone risk was examined. Extensive subgroup analyses were conducted for enhanced reliability of the findings. RESULTS: The findings indicate a heightened kidney stone risk for those at the highest NHHR levels relative to those at the lowest (reference group). A notable non-linear correlation of NHHR with kidney stone incidence has been observed, with a significant P-value (< 0.001), consistent across various subgroups. CONCLUSION: A clear link exists between high NHHR levels and increased kidney stone risk in the American adult population. This study highlights NHHR's significance as a potential indicator in kidney stone formation.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the disease burden of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) globally, regionally, and in 204 countries by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI) from 1990 to 2019, and to explore cross-national inequalities across SDI. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database collected data on KOA worldwide from 1990 to 2019, including prevalence, incidence, years lived with disability (YLDs). The average annual percentage change (AAPC) was used to measure temporal trends. In addition, the inequality slope index and the health concentration index were calculated to quantify the unequal distribution of the burden of KOA across 204 countries worldwide. RESULTS: In 2019, the global age-standardized prevalence rate increased by 7.5% compared with 1990, and the age-standardized incidence rate increased by about 6.2%; The age-standardized YLDs rate increased by about 7.8%. In addition to the Republic of Korea and the United States of America, the disease burden of KOA has increased year by year in other countries around the world. The incidence of KOA was highest at ages 50-59, while the prevalence and rates of YLDs were highest at ages 75-84. The burden of KOA was higher in women than in men. Cross-country inequality suggests that the inequality in the burden of KOA between high SDI and low SDI countries becomes greater, and that countries with high SDI bear a disproportionately high burden. CONCLUSION: The global KOA burden has risen steadily between 1990 and 2019, and cross-national inequality gaps remain large. Targeted measures must therefore be taken to address this inequality and the increasing global KOA disease burden.

We propose a modified configuration of the nonlinear-optical loop mirror (NOLM) unit by introducing the polarization-effect optimization (PE) into a nonlinear Sagnac interferometer through a polarization-maintaining optical coupler, enabling significant extension of the regeneration region (RR) of the all-optical multi-level amplitude regenerator. We carry out the thoughtful investigations on this PE-NOLM subsystem, and reveal the collaboration mechanism between the Kerr nonlinearity and the PE effect in only one unit. Moreover, the proof-of-concept experiment and its theoretical discussion of multiple-level operation have been performed, observing the 188% enhancement on the RR extending and the consequent 4.5â dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement for a 4-level pulse amplitude modulated (PAM4) signal compared to the conventional NOLM scheme.

A novel method for the construction of a cyclopenta[c]quinoline ring via cyclization of 3-bromoindoles with internal alkynes in the presence of palladium is described. The formation of the cyclopenta[c]quinoline ring is proposed from a double [1,5] carbon sigmatropic rearrangement of the spirocyclic cyclopentadiene intermediate, which is generated in situ from the cyclization of 3-bromoindoles with internal alkynes involving a sequential double alkyne insertion into the carbon-palladium bond and dearomatization of indole. The present studies have developed a novel ring-expansion reaction of the pyrrole ring to pyridine via one carbon insertion into the C2-C3 bond of indoles and provided a simple and distinct route for the construction of tricyclic fused-quinoline derivatives that are not easy to access with conventional methods.

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) is a promising, noninvasive invasive intracranial pressure (ICP) measurement method. This study aims to analyze the differences in ONSD between the left and right eyeballs and the differences in ultrasonic measurement between the transverse and sagittal planes. METHODS: Data from a total of 50 eligible patients with various types of brain injury who were admitted to our hospital from May 2019 to June 2021 were analyzed. An ONSD assessment was then performed using Philips B-mode ultrasound, measuring ONSD 3 mm posterior to the eyeballs. The left and right ONSDs in the transverse and sagittal planes were measured. Intraparenchymal fiber optic sensors and catheters were inserted into the ventricles and connected to an external pressure transducer to measure ICP. RESULTS: A total of 164 sonographic measurements of ONSD were performed in 50 patients with brain injury in a prospective observational study. Statistically significant differences were found in ONSD between the transverse and sagittal planes. The difference in the left ONSD between the transverse and sagittal planes was 0.007 ± 0.030 cm (P = 0.003). The Spearman rank correlation test showed that the correlation coefficient between ICP and left/right ONSD in the transverse/sagittal planes was 0.495 vs 0.546 and 0.559 vs 0.605, respectively. The results showed that the areas under the curve of ONSD in the transverse and sagittal planes were 0.843 and 0.805, respectively. Medcalc software was used to compare the areas under the receiver operator characteristic curve, and the results showed that ONSD in the sagittal plane is generally better than in the transverse plane (P = 0.0145). CONCLUSIONS: This study found that ONSD in the sagittal plane is superior to the transverse plane regarding the comprehensive efficacy of ICP, and unilateral measurement is sufficient.

The principle of phase-preserving regeneration is revealed by a simple theoretical model, that is, in the regenerated signals the linear phase shift component is dominant over the nonlinear counterpart for phase-preserving amplitude regeneration (PPAR). A Mach-Zehnder- interferometer (MZI)-nested nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) PPAR scheme is proposed and verified by theory and experiment. Our experiment shows that for QPSK regeneration the noise reduction ratio in terms of error vector magnitude (EVM) is linearly dependent on the input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with the slope of 0.78 and the average phase disturbation is 4.37 degree, close to the theoretical value of 3.8 degrees. The influence of the optical couplers on the PPAR performance is in detail discussed.

Cu(OH)2 nanomaterials are widely investigated for non-enzymatic glucose sensors due to their low-cost and excellent performance. Cu(OH)2 nanomaterials usually grow on substrates to form sensor electrodes. Reported works mainly focus on structure adjusting of the Cu(OH)2 nanostructures, while the optimization of substrates is still lacking. In the present work, directional porous Cu (DPC) was applied as the substrate for the growth of Cu(OH)2 nanograss (NG), and hierarchical structures of Cu(OH)2@DPC were prepared by alkaline oxidation. The morphology and microstructure evolution of the prepared hierarchical structures was investigated, and the non-enzymatic glucose sensing performance was evaluated. Cu(OH)2@DPC exhibits enhanced comprehensive non-enzymatic glucose sensing performance compared to the reported ones, which may benefit from both the effective adsorption of the Cu(OH)2 NG with a relatively high surface area and the high solute exchange of the DPC by a channel effect. This work provides new insights into the further improvement of the non-enzymatic glucose sensing performance of Cu(OH)2 nanostructures by optimizing the substrate structure.

We demonstrate a dialytic strategy for the synthesis of congeneric two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2D MOF) nanosheets with a dialysis membrane using 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC), 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (NDC), and 9,10-anthracenedicarboxylic acid (ADC) as organic linkers and copper(II) as a metal precursor, respectively. Polyimide (PI) membranes containing these empty 2D MOF nanosheets exhibit distinct molecular sieve effects. Molecular dynamic simulation results reveal that the structures of MOF-polymer interfaces are designable by modifying the MOF interlayer distance and aperture size, which has significant influences on gas permeability and selectivity. As a result, Cu-NDC/PI with the moderate composite interface structure shows superior performance toward H2/CH4 and CO2/CH4 separations with a selectivity of 199 and 63 over Cu-BDC (121 and 53) and Cu-ADC (135 and 54), respectively.

This study aims to detect whether the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) can be used to dynamically monitor intracranial pressure (ICP). Adult patients undergoing invasive ICP monitoring on the day of admission are included in this study. For each patient, the ONSD is first measured in the supine position and then in the 30° head-up position. Subsequently, a dynamic test is conducted on 16 patients. The ONSD is measured in the supine position once a day for three consecutive days starting on the day of admission. There is a strong correlation between the ONSD and ICP values in the supine position on admission (r = 0.799), and when patients are changed from the supine to the 30° head-up position, the ICP and ONSD values decrease correspondingly. However, the change in ICP is not strongly correlated with the change in ONSD (r = 0.358). In the dynamic test, a good agreement between the ICP and ONSD only exists in three patients (18.8%), and three patients have completely different profiles for ICP and ONSD. These results suggest that the changes in the ONSD and ICP values are not closely correlated after dynamic observation. Therefore, measurement of the ONSD may not be a suitable tool to dynamically monitor ICP.

High quality genome is of great significance for the mining of biological information resources of species. Up to now, the genomic information of several important economic flatfishes has been well explained. All these fishes are eyes on left side-type, and no high-quality genome of eyes on right side-type species has been reported. In this study, we applied a combined strategy involving stLFR and Hi-C technologies to generate sequencing data for constructing the chromosomal genome of Verasper variegates, which belongs to Pleuronectidae with characteristic of eyes on right side. The size of genome of V. variegatus is 556 Mb. More than 97.2% of BUSCO genes were detected, and N50 lengths of the contigs and scaffolds reached 79.8 Kb and 23.8 Mb, respectively, demonstrating the outstanding completeness and sequence continuity of the genome. A total of 22,199 protein-coding genes were predicted in the assembled genome, and more than 95% of those genes could be functionally annotated. Meanwhile, the genomic collinearity, gene family and phylogenetic analyses of similar species in Pleuronectiformes were also investigated and portrayed for metamorphosis and benthic adaptation. Sex related genes mapping has also been achieved at the chromosome level. This study is the first chromosomal level genome of a Pleuronectidae fish (V. variegatus). The chromosomal genome assembly constructed in this work will not only be valuable for conservation and aquaculture studies of the V. variegatus but will also be of general interest in the phylogenetic and taxonomic studies of Pleuronectiformes.

Prostate cancer (PCa) has become one of the most common malignancies in men, and its incidence is increasing year by year in China. When PCa develops into castration-resistant PCa (CRPC), it deteriorates rapidly. So, it is important to find more sensitive molecular markers and effective therapeutic targets for the diagnosis and treatment of the malignancy. Circular RNA (circRNA) is a covalently closed loop non-coding RNA formed by reverse splicing, playing an important regulatory role in a variety of tumors. In recent years, many studies show that circRNA is involved in the regulation of PCa as miRNA sponge, binding with the RNA binding protein and other molecular sponges, and may be a potential molecular marker and therapeutic target for PCa. This review summarizes the advances in recent studies of circRNA in the development and progression of PCa, CRPC, and radiation-resistant PCa.

BACKGROUND: Recently, researchers have proposed a possible relationship between RA and the microbiome of the oral cavity and gut. However, this relation has not been systematically established. Herein, we conducted a comprehensive review of the pertinent literature to describe this possible association. METHODS: We systematically performed searches in databases, namely EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and PubMed, from inception to 7 June 2020 to identify case-control studies that compared the oral and gut microbiome in adult RA patients with those of controls. The primary outcome was specific bacterial changes between RA and controls. The secondary outcome was microbial diversity changes between RA and controls. RESULTS: In total, 26 articles were considered eligible for inclusion and reported some differences. Therein, ≥3 articles reported decreased Faecalibacterium in the gut of early-RA (ERA)/RA patients compared with healthy controls (HCs). Also, ≥3 articles reported decreased Streptococcus and Haemophilus and increased Prevotella in the oral cavity of ERA/RA patients compared with HCs. In addition, some Prevotella species, including P. histicola and P. oulorum, showed increased trends in RA patients' oral cavity, compared with HCs. The α-diversity of the microbiome was either increased or not changed in the oral cavity of RA patients, but it was more commonly either decreased or not changed in the gut of RA patients. CONCLUSIONS: In this systematic review, we identified the microbiome associated with RA patients in comparison with controls. More research is needed in the future to find the deep relationship between RA and the microbiome.

We propose an on-chip all-optical multilevel amplitude regenerator scheme over a Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI) configuration, enabling multiple amplitude-noise suppression on 16-QAM signals. Joint parameter optimization is carried out based on the general nonlinear model of the proposed scheme to significantly reduce the phase distortion caused by the nonlinear interferometer, which is the key to perform the phase preserving operation. The full function of the phase-preserving amplitude regeneration (PPAR) is verified by an experiment on an on-chip nonlinear waveguide with the length of the 2.31â cm. Furthermore, we perform thoughtful investigations on the oscillatory behavior achieved by the silicon MZI regenerator, enabling the full PPAR on 16-QAM signals through the optimized multiple power plateaus. A maximum 1.6â dB improvement of signal quality is achieved by the proposed on-chip amplitude regenerator at the input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 25â dB. The impact from the two-photon absorption (TPA) effect as an positive role in the regenerator is also well discussed.

Bismuth-containing quadruple treatment (BQT) and concomitant treatment (CT) were recommended as alternative first-line treatments of Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori). A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the cure rates and compare efficacy and safety of BQT and CT for H. Pylori eradication. PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases were searched on June 16, 2020. Meta-analysis, sensitivity analysis, and subgroup analysis were conducted by Review Manager 5.3 and Stata 11.0. Ten studies were collected. We found no difference of cure rate between BQT and CT in intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis (84.6% vs. 82.9%, OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 0.94-1.38; P = 0.19) and marginally statistical difference in per-protocol (PP) analysis (92.4% vs 90.1%, OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.00-1.73; P = 0.05). Based on the results of subgroup analyses, we found statistical difference of eradication rate between BQT and CT (amoxicillin + clarithromycin + metronidazole + PPI treatment) according to PP analysis (94.3% vs. 91.5%, OR = 1.49, 95% CI:1.03-2.15; P = 0.03) and marginally statistical difference according to ITT analysis (87.5% vs. 84.6%, OR = 1.28, 95% CI:1.00-1.65; P = 0.05). BQT and CT may be both good treatment options for H. pylori infection. However, BQT was superior to current scheme of CT (amoxicillin + clarithromycin + metronidazole + PPI treatment) in subgroup analysis. It is very necessary to choose tailored therapy as an outstanding way to reduce the impact of antibiotic.

OBJECTIVE: The skin is the second most affected organ after articular involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Cutaneous involvement occurs in approximately 80% of patients during the course of SLE. Interaction between the host and skin microorganism is a complex process. There are few studies on the diversity of skin microbes in SLE patients. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between skin microorganisms and SLE. METHODS: A total of 20 SLE patients, 20 controls with rosacea and 20 healthy controls were selected as study subjects. Both the skin microbiota of rash region and non-rash region for each SLE patient were collected.16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to detected skin microbiota from 80 specimens. α-Diversity and ß-diversity of skin microbiota were analyzed based on operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and minimal entropy decomposition (MED). Using Wilcoxon test and Linear Discriminate Analysis Effect Size (LEfSe), skin microbial diversity and composition were analyzed. Functional capabilities of microbiota were estimated through Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database. RESULTS: Compared to rash region of SLE, diversity and richness were increased in healthy controls, and decreased in non-rash region of SLE and rash region of controls with rosacea. Additionally, changes of skin microbial composition were found at different taxonomic levels between four groups. For example, genus Halomonas was increased and genera Pelagibacterium, Novosphingobium, and Curvibacter were decreased in rash region compared to non-rash region of SLE based on OTUs and MED. Based on OTUs, metabolic pathways were also found differences in SLE patients, such as Xenobiotics Biodegradation and Metabolism. CONCLUSION: Compositions and diversity of skin microbiota in SLE patients are changed. This pilot study provides some suggestive evidence for further exploration of skin microbiota in SLE patients with cutaneous involvement.

BACKGROUND: Biological agents are commonly used for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). As new treatments, tofacitinib, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) have demonstrated efficacy in treating UC. This network meta-analysis aims to determine the efficacy and safety of biological agents, tofacitinib, and FMT. METHODS: A network meta-analysis was conducted by systematically searching the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Libraries. According to strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, we included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of biological agents, tofacitinib, and FMT in UC. A random-effect model was chosen by the network meta-analysis and sensitivity analysis. Heterogeneity test and publication bias test were performed to determine the efficacy of treatments. RESULTS: Data were extracted from 16 RCTs and we found that all treatments were more effective than the placebos. A total of 21 comparisons were made to determine efficiency. We found that infliximab, vedolizumab, and FMT performed better curative effect in terms of absolute effects and relative ranks. Furthermore, there was no statistical difference in the efficacy of biological agents, tofacitinib, and FMT. Moreover, no treatments were found to increase the occurrence of adverse events when compared with placebos, except infliximab. However, vedolizumab seemed to reduce the occurrence of adverse events compared with infliximab. CONCLUSION: Of the biological agents, vedolizumab and infliximab were the most effective, suggesting that biological agents are still a better choice. Nevertheless, tofacitinib and FMT may be promising alternatives with high efficacies. Epidemiological studies have implied that the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indomethacin slows the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the underlying mechanisms are notably understudied. Using a chimeric mouse/human amyloid precursor protein (Mo/HuAPP695swe) and a mutant human presenilin 1 (PS1-dE9) (APP/PS1) expressing transgenic (Tg) mice and neuroblastoma (N) 2a cells as in vivo and in vitro models, we revealed the mechanisms of indomethacin in ameliorating the cognitive decline of AD. By screening AD-associated genes, we observed that a marked increase in the expression of α2-macroglobulin (A2M) was markedly induced after treatment with indomethacin. Mechanistically, upregulation of A2M was caused by the inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and lipocalin-type prostaglandin D synthase (L-PGDS), which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandin (PG)H2 and PGD2, respectively. The reduction in PGD2 levels induced by indomethacin alleviated the suppression of A2M expression through a PGD2 receptor 2 (CRTH2)-dependent mechanism. Highly activated A2M not only disrupted the production and aggregation of ß-amyloid protein (Aß) but also induced Aß efflux from the brain. More interestingly, indomethacin decreased the degradation of the A2M receptor, low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1), which facilitated the brain efflux of Aß. Through the aforementioned mechanisms, indomethacin ameliorated cognitive decline in APP/PS1 Tg mice by decreasing Aß production and clearing Aß from the brains of AD mice.

We report the synthesis of two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on nickel foam (NF) by assembling nickel chloride hexahydrate and 1,1'-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid (NiFc-MOF/NF). The NiFc-MOF/NF exhibits superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with an overpotential of 195â mV and 241â mV at 10 and 100â mA cm-2 , respectively under alkaline conditions. Electrochemical results demonstrate that the superb OER performance originates from the ferrocene units that serve as efficient electron transfer intermediates. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the ferrocene units within the MOF crystalline structure enhance the overall electron transfer capacity, thereby leading to a theoretical overpotential of 0.52â eV, which is lower than that (0.81â eV) of the state-of-the-art NiFe double hydroxides.

In this paper, an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metamaterial with the performances of polarization independence and multi-transmission windows is proposed. First, we design an EIT with a single transmission window, which is composed of an H-shaped structure and two split-ring resonators (SRRs). Then, by sequentially rotating the unit by 90°, a new EIT structure with rotational symmetry is obtained. The results show that the new EIT structure has the characteristics of polarization independence and multiple transmission windows, and each transmission window has a high maximum transmittance and group index. The first transmission window has a maximum group index of 88.9 and 98.9% maximum transmission. The maximum group indices of the second and third transmission windows are 117.9 and 215.3, and the peak transmissions are 89.9% and 97.4%, respectively. The multiple transmission windows with polarization independence widen the application scope of the proposed EIT metamaterial and are suitable for high-performance slow-wave devices with the above two requirements.
