RESUMO

The lithium deposited via the complex electrochemical heterogeneous lithium deposition reaction (LDR) process on a lithium foil-based anode (LFA) forms a high-aspect-ratio shape whenever the reaction kinetics reach its limit, threatening battery safety. Thereby, a research strategy that boosts the LDR kinetics is needed to construct a high-power and safe lithium metal anode. In this study, the kinetic limitations of the LDR process on LFA are elucidated through operando and ex situ observations using in-depth electrochemical analyses. In addition, ultra-thin (≈0.5 µm) and high modulus (≥19 GPa) double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) membranes with different surface properties are designed to catalyze high-safety LDRs. The oxygen-functionalized DWNT membranes introduced on the LFA top surface simultaneously induce multitudinous lithium nuclei, leading to film-like lithium deposition even at a high current density of 20 mA cm-2. More importantly, the layer-by-layer assembly of the oxygen-functionalized and pristine DWNT membranes results in different surface energies between the top and bottom surfaces, enabling selective surface LDRs underneath the high-modulus bilayer membranes. The protective LDR on the bilayer-covered LFA guarantees an invulnerable cycling process in large-area pouch cells at high current densities for more than 1000 cycles, demonstrating the practicability of LFA in a conventional liquid electrolyte system.

RESUMO

We present a new approach to achieving strong coupling between electrically injected excitons and photonic bound states in the continuum of a dielectric metasurface. Here a high-finesse metasurface cavity is monolithically patterned in the channel of a perovskite light-emitting transistor to induce a large Rabi splitting of ∼200 meV and more than 50-fold enhancement of the polaritonic emission compared to the intrinsic excitonic emission of the perovskite film. Moreover, the directionality of polaritonic electroluminescence can be dynamically tuned by varying the source-drain bias, which induces an asymmetric distribution of exciton population within the transistor channel. We argue that this approach provides a new platform to study strong light-matter interactions in dispersion engineered photonic cavities under electrical injection and paves the way to solution-processed electrically pumped polariton lasers.

RESUMO

Light-matter interactions in optical cavities underpin many applications of integrated quantum photonics. Among various solid-state platforms, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is gaining considerable interest as a compelling van der Waals host of quantum emitters. However, progress to date has been limited by an inability to engineer simultaneously an hBN emitter and a narrow-band photonic resonator at a predetermined wavelength. Here, we overcome this problem and demonstrate deterministic fabrication of hBN nanobeam photonic crystal cavities with high quality factors over a broad spectral range (∼400 to 850 nm). We then fabricate a monolithic, coupled cavity-emitter system designed for a blue quantum emitter that has an emission wavelength of 436 nm and is induced deterministically by electron beam irradiation of the cavity hotspot. Our work constitutes a promising path to scalable on-chip quantum photonics and paves the way to quantum networks based on van der Waals materials.

RESUMO

We present a dual-resonance nanostructure made of a titanium dioxide (TiO2) subwavelength grating to enhance the color downconversion efficiency of CdxZn1-xSeyS1-y colloidal quantum dots (QDs) emitting at ∼530 nm when excited with a blue light at ∼460 nm. A large mode volume can be created within the QD layer by the hybridization of the grating resonances and waveguide modes, resulting in large absorption and emission enhancements. Particularly, we achieved polarized light emission with a maximum photoluminescence enhancement of ∼140 times at a specific angular direction and a total enhancement of ∼34 times within a 0.55 numerical aperture (NA) of the collecting objective. The enhancement encompasses absorption, Purcell and outcoupling enhancements. We achieved a total absorption of 35% for green QDs with a remarkably thin color conversion layer of ∼400 nm. This work provides a guideline for designing large-volume cavities for absorption/fluorescence enhancement in microLED display, detector, or photovoltaic applications.

RESUMO

The concept of a lithiophilic electrode proves inadequate in describing carbon-based electrode materials due to their substantial mismatch in surface energy with lithium metal. However, their notable capacity for lithium chemisorption can increase active lithium concentration required for nucleation and growth, thereby enhancing the electrochemical performance of lithium metal anodes (LMAs). In this study, we elucidate the effects of the supersaturated electrode which has high active lithium capacity around equilibrium lithium potential on LMAs through an in-depth electrochemical comparison using two distinct carbon electrode platforms with differing carbon structures but similar two-dimensional morphologies. In the supersaturated electrode, both the dynamics and thermodynamic states involved in lithium nucleation and growth mechanisms are significantly improved, particularly under continuous current supply conditions. Furthermore, the chemical structures of the solid-electrolyte-interface layers (SEIs) are greatly influenced by the elevated surface lithium concentration environment, resulting in the formation of more conductive lithium-rich SEI layers. The improved dynamics and thermodynamics of surface lithium, coupled with the formation of enhanced SEI layers, contribute to higher power capabilities, enhanced Coulombic efficiencies, and improved cycling performances of LMAs. These results provide new insight into understanding the enhancements in heterogeneous lithium nucleation and growth kinetics on the supersaturated electrode.

RESUMO

Resonant metasurfaces provide a unique platform for enhancing multiwave nonlinear interactions. However, the difficulties over mode matching and material transparency place significant challenges in the enhancement of these multiwave processes. Here we demonstrate efficient nonlinear sum-frequency generation (SFG) in multiresonant GaP metasurfaces based on guided-wave bound-state in the continuum resonances. The excitation of the metasurface by two near-infrared input beams generates strong SFG in the visible spectrum with a conversion efficiency of 2.5 × 10-4 W-1, 2 orders of magnitude higher than the one reported in Mie-type resonant metasurfaces. In addition, we demonstrate the nontrivial polarization dependence on the SFG process. In contrast to harmonic generation, the SFG process is enhanced when using nonparallel polarized input-beams. Importantly, by varying the input pump beam polarization it is possible to direct the SFG emission to different diffraction orders, thereby opening up new opportunities for nonlinear light sources and infrared to visible light conversion.

RESUMO

Reconfigurable metamaterials require constituent nanostructures to demonstrate switching of shapes with external stimuli. Yet, a longstanding challenge is in overcoming stiction caused by van der Waals forces in the deformed configuration, which impedes shape recovery. Here, we introduce stiff shape memory polymers. This designer material has a storage modulus of ∼5.2 GPa at room temperature and ∼90 MPa in the rubbery state at 150 °C, 1 order of magnitude higher than those in previous reports. Nanopillars with diameters of ∼400 nm and an aspect ratio as high as ∼10 were printed by two-photon lithography. Experimentally, we observe shape recovery as collapsed and touching structures overcome stiction to stand back up. We develop a theoretical model to explain the recoverability of these sub-micrometer structures. Reconfigurable structural color prints with a resolution of 21150 dots per inch and holograms are demonstrated, indicating potential applications of the stiff shape memory polymers in high-resolution reconfigurable nanophotonics.

RESUMO

It has been long known that low molecular weight resists can achieve a very high resolution, theoretically close to the probe diameter of the electron beam lithography (EBL) system. Despite technological improvements in EBL systems, the advances in resists have lagged behind. Here we demonstrate that a low-molecular-mass single-source precursor resist (based on cadmium(II) ethylxanthate complexed with pyridine) is capable of a achieving resolution (4 nm) that closely matches the measured probe diameter (∼3.8 nm). Energetic electrons enable the top-down radiolysis of the resist, while they provide the energy to construct the functional material from the bottom-up─unit cell by unit cell. Since this occurs only within the volume of resist exposed to primary electrons, the minimum size of the patterned features is close to the beam diameter. We speculate that angstrom-scale patterning of functional materials is possible with single-source precursor resists using an aberration-corrected electron beam writer with a spot size of ∼1 Å.

RESUMO

Solid-state room-temperature lasing with tunability in a wide range of wavelengths is desirable for many applications. To achieve this, besides an efficient gain material with a tunable emission wavelength, a high quality-factor optical cavity is essential. Here, we combine a film of colloidal CdSe/CdZnS core-shell nanoplatelets with square arrays of nanocylinders made of titanium dioxide to achieve optically pumped lasing at visible wavelengths and room temperature. The all-dielectric arrays support bound states in the continuum (BICs), which result from lattice-mediated Mie resonances and boast infinite quality factors in theory. In particular, we demonstrate lasing from a BIC that originates from out-of-plane magnetic dipoles oscillating in phase. By adjusting the diameter of the cylinders, we tune the lasing wavelength across the gain bandwidth of the nanoplatelets. The spectral tunability of both the cavity resonance and nanoplatelet gain, together with efficient light confinement in BICs, promises low-threshold lasing with wide selectivity in wavelengths.

RESUMO

A highly efficient nanocavity formed by optically coupled nanostructures is achieved by optimization of the collective Mie resonances in a one-dimensional array of semiconductor nanoparticles. Analysis of quasi-normal multipole modes enables us to reveal the close relation between the collective Mie resonances and Van Hove singularities. On the basis of these concepts, we experimentally demonstrate a directional GaAs nanolaser at cryogenic temperatures with well-defined, in-plane emission, which, moreover, can be controlled by selective excitation. The lasing threshold is shown to be significantly reduced by optimizing the interparticle gap such that the optimal near-field confinement is achieved at a resonant wavelength corresponding to the highest gain of GaAs. We show that the lasing performance of this nanolaser is orders of magnitude better than a nanowire-based laser of the same dimensions. The present work provides design guidelines for high performance in-plane emission nanolasers, which may find applications in future photonic integrated circuits.

RESUMO

Resonant metasurfaces are an attractive platform for enhancing the nonlinear optical processes, such as second harmonic generation (SHG), since they can generate large local electromagnetic fields while relaxing the phase-matching requirements. Here, we demonstrate visible range, continuous wave (CW) SHG by combining the attractive material properties of gallium phosphide with high quality-factor photonic modes enabled by bound states in the continuum. We obtain efficiencies around 5e-5% W-1 when the system is pumped at 1200 nm wavelength with CW intensities of 1 kW/cm2. Moreover, we measure external efficiencies of 0.1% W-1 with pump intensities of only 10 MW/cm2 for pulsed irradiation. This efficiency is higher than the values previously reported for dielectric metasurfaces, but achieved here with pump intensities that are two orders of magnitude lower. These results take metasurface-based SHG a step closer to practical applications.

RESUMO

Despite the recent attention for Li metal anode (LMA) with high theoretical specific capacity of ≈3860 mA h g-1 , it suffers from not enough practical energy densities and safety concerns originating from the excessive metal load, which is essential to compensate for the loss of Li sources resulting from their poor coulombic efficiencies (CEs). Therefore, the development of high-performance LMA is needed to realize anode-minimized Li metal batteries (LMBs). In this study, high-performance LMAs are produced by introducing a hierarchically nanoporous assembly (HNA) composed of functionalized onion-like graphitic carbon building blocks, several nanometers in diameter, as a catalytic scaffold for Li-metal storage. The HNA-based electrodes lead to a high Li ion concentration in the nanoporous structure, showing a high CE of ≈99.1%, high rate capability of 12 mA cm-2 , and a stable cycling behavior of more than 750 cycles. In addition, anode-minimized LMBs are achieved using a HNA that has limited Li content (≈0.13 mg cm-2 ), corresponding to 6.5% of the cathode material (commercial NCM622 (≈2 mg cm-2 )). The LMBs demonstrate a feasible electrochemical performance with high energy and power densities of ≈510 Wh kgelectrode -1 and ≈2760 W kgelectrode -1 , respectively, for more than 100 cycles.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The impact of multiple primary tumors, in the setting of malignant glioma (MG), has not been heavily explored. METHODS: We extracted demographics and clinical data from the SEER-18 registry for adult patients with MGs. The cases were separated based on the sequence of MG diagnosis relative to the other primary tumors: Group (A) One primary only or first primary of multiple primaries and Group (B) second primary or subsequent primary tumor. Incidences, frequencies, and glioma-related survivals were analyzed. RESULTS: Group B constituted 12.8% of new MG. The incidences of group B, relative to those of all new MG, range from 0.14 to 0.18. Compared to group A, group B exhibited an older age. Moreover, group B exhibited a higher proportion of females, Caucasians, smaller tumors, non-operative cases, and those receiving radiation (p < 0.05); the proportion with GTR remained comparable. Multiple groupings (oral cavity, digestive system, respiratory system, skin, breast, genital systems, urinary system, lymphoma) exhibited lower glioma-related observed survival (p < 0.05) compared to Group A. An active diagnosis of "leukemia" appears to confer longer glioma-related survival while a history of "breast" or "digestive system" malignancies portends a shorter glioma-related survival. CONCLUSION: For newly diagnosed MG, a high proportion does have history of extra-CNS primary tumors. Generally, these patients appear to have worse glioma-related observed survival compare to those with malignant glioma as the only primary or the first of multiple primary tumors. Knowledge regarding epidemiology, clinical factors, and observed survival can help guide clinical management/consultation for this subset of patients.

RESUMO

In the growing list of 2D semiconductors as potential successors to silicon in future devices, metal-halide perovskites have recently joined the family. Unlike other conversional 2D covalent semiconductors such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, etc., 2D perovskites are ionic materials, affording many distinct properties of their own, including high photoluminescence quantum efficiency, balanced large exciton binding energy and oscillator strength, and long carrier diffusion length. These unique properties make 2D perovskites potential candidates for optoelectronic and photonic devices such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, nanolasers, waveguides, modulators, and so on, which represent a relatively new but exciting and rapidly expanding area of research. In this Review, the recent advances in emerging 2D metal-halide perovskites and their applications in the fields of optoelectronics and photonics are summarized and insights into the future direction of these fields are offered.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Laminectomy is the traditional approach for posterior exposure of the spinal canal for tumor resection. Another technique is split laminotomy, which entails the division and retraction of the spinous processes and laminae to access the thecal sac. This technique has been employed for small-segment exposures, but not extensively explored for long-segment exposures. CASE: A 2-month-old male presented with progressive right-leg plegia. MRI of the spine revealed a large, intramedullary spinal-cord lipoma extending from C6 to L5. Surgical debulking was recommended to prevent further neurological deterioration. The patient underwent a split laminotomy (C6 to L5) for the debulking of the spinal lipoma. Complete resection was not pursued; rather, the goal was complete decompression. Postoperatively, the patient exhibited good upper-extremity strength but minimal lower-extremity movement; the latter had progressively improved by the time he was discharged. The patient was extubated and tolerated oral intake. Urological evaluation noted a high-pressure bladder with neurogenic overactivity; he was started on intermittent catheterization with anticholinergic medication. He was placed in a custom brace with instructions to wear the brace for 20 h per day. At the 2-year follow-up, the patient exhibited a persistent left-foot contracture deformity and weakness requiring an orthosis. Serial films demonstrated no abnormal deformity at 11 months but notable progression of kyphosis and scoliosis at 30 months. CONCLUSION: For multilevel posterior exposure of the spinal canal, split laminotomy is an alternative that can provide adequate exposure for midline lesions without disrupting the paraspinal musculature. Longer-segment exposures, especially spanning the cervical to lumbar levels, may still elicit kyphosis and scoliosis. As such, long-term follow-up remains necessary.

RESUMO

The aims of the present study were to provide nationally representative data on fruit and vegetable consumption in Vietnam, and to assess the accuracy of the reported numbers of 'standard servings' consumed. Data analysed were from a multi-stage stratified cluster survey of 14 706 participants (46·5 % males, response proportion 64·1 %) aged 25-64 years in Vietnam. Measurements were made in accordance with the WHO STEPwise approach to surveillance of non-communicable diseases (STEPS) protocols. Approximately 80 % of Vietnamese people reported having less than five servings of fruit and vegetables daily in a typical week. Fruit and vegetable intake reported in 'standard serving' sizes was positively correlated with levels of education completed and household income (P<0·001 for trend). The correlations between summary values for each province reflect some known demographic, geographical and climatic characteristics of the country. For example, provinces at higher latitude had higher mean servings of vegetables (r 0·90), and provinces with higher proportions of urban population had higher mean servings of fruit (r 0·40). In conclusion, about eight in ten Vietnamese people aged 25-64 years did not meet WHO recommendations for daily consumption of at least five servings of fruit and vegetables. On the basis of the consistency of the data collected with other estimates and with physical and demographic characteristics of the country, the WHO STEPS instrument has construct validity for measuring fruit and vegetable intake, but with two issues identified. The issues were seasonal variation in reporting and a limitation on the usefulness of the information for associative analyses.

RESUMO

AIMS: To provide nationally representative data on alcohol consumption in Vietnam and to assess whether reported numbers of 'standard drinks' consumed have evidence of validity (particularly in rural areas where home-made alcohol is consumed from cups of varying size). METHODS: A nationally representative population-based survey of 14,706 participants (46.5% males, response proportion 64.1%) aged 25-64 years in Vietnam. Measurements were made in accordance with WHO STEPS protocols. Data were analysed using complex survey methods. RESULTS: Among men, 80% reported drinking alcohol during the last year, and 40% were hazardous/harmful drinkers. Approximately 60% of men and <5% of women had consumed alcohol during the last week, with one-in-four of the men reporting having consumed at least five standard drinks on at least one occasion. Numbers of standard drinks reported by men were associated with blood pressure/hypertension, particularly in rural areas (P < 0.001 for trend). Most of the calibration and discrimination possible from self-reported information on alcohol consumption was provided by binary responses to questions on whether or not alcohol had been consumed during the reference period. CONCLUSION: Alcohol use and harmful consumption were common among Vietnamese men but less pronounced than in Western nations. Self-reports of quantity of alcohol consumed in terms of standard drinks had predictive validity for blood pressure and hypertension even in rural areas. However, using detailed measures of consumption resulted in only minor improvements in prediction compared to simple measures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To estimate the prevalence of non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors at a provincial level in Vietnam, and to assess whether the summary estimates allow reliable inferences to be drawn regarding regional differences in risk factors and associations between them. METHODS: Participants (n = 14706, 53.5 % females) aged 25-64 years were selected by multi-stage stratified cluster sampling from eight provinces each representing one of the eight geographical regions of Vietnam. Measurements were made using the World Health Organization STEPS protocols. Data were analysed using complex survey methods. RESULTS: Differences by sex in mean years of schooling (males 8.26 ± 0.20, females 7.00 ± 0.18), proportions of current smokers (males 57.70 %, females 1.73 %), and binge-drinkers (males 25.11 %, females 0.63 %), and regional differences in diet, reflected the geographical and socio-cultural characteristics of the country. Provinces with a higher proportion of urban population had greater mean levels of BMI (r = 0.82), and lesser proportions of active people (r = -0.89). The associations between the summary estimates were generally plausible (e.g. physical activity and BMI, r = -0.80) but overstated, and with some anomalous findings due to characterisation of smoking and hypertension by STEPS protocols. CONCLUSIONS: This report provides an extensive description of the sex-specific and regional distribution of NCD risk factors in Vietnam and an account of some health-related consequences of industrialisation in its early stages. The STEPS protocols can be utilized to provide aggregate data for valid between-population comparisons, but with important caveats identified.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Retroclival hematomas are a rare entity. The pathology can be categorized into epidural hematoma or subdural hematoma based on the anatomy of the tectorial membrane. Frequently, the etiology is related to accidental trauma, though other mechanisms have been observed, including coagulopathy, non-accidental trauma, and pituitary apoplexy. There have been only 2 prior cases where both epidural and subdural hematoma co-present. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old male was involved in a high-speed motor vehicle accident. He presented with a Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) of 14 with bilateral abducens nerve palsies. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a hemorrhage along the dorsum sella, clivus, and dens. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated the retroclival hematoma in both the subdural and epidural space. At discharge, 19 days after the accident, the abducens nerve palsies had resolved without medical or operative intervention. CONCLUSION: Retroclival hematoma may present after trauma. Although most cases exhibit a benign clinical course with conservative management, significant and profound morbidity and mortality have been reported. Prompt diagnosis with close observation is prudent. Surgical management is indicated in the presence of hydrocephalus, symptomatic brainstem compression, and occipito-cervical instability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Equestrian activities can be undertaken for competition or leisure. Accidents can lead to bodily injuries. In particular, traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be devastating. Limited data exist regarding the pediatric population with respect to patterns of injury and related neurosurgical intervention. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data for all pediatric patients diagnosed with equestrian-related injuries with neurological injuries from 2005 through June 2015. RESULTS: Nine patients (1 male and 8 females) had neurological injuries. Their mean age was 10.4 years (range 2.9-16.8 years). Intracranial pathologies ranged from small punctate hemorrhages to large surgical extra-axial hematomas. Five patients also had concurrent skull fractures; 2 exhibited open lesions. Two patients required a decompressive craniotomy with placement of an external ventricular drain. Three patients exhibited other minor injuries; none had thoracic/abdominal/pelvic injuries. At discharge, all had good recovery; 1 patient who had a craniotomy did have a persistent right third-nerve palsy. CONCLUSION: Equestrian activities can present with dangerous and unpredictable situations, which can lead to profound neurological injury. Caution should be observed for all involved members, as both riders and nonriders are susceptible to harm. Protective gear (such as helmets), adequate training, and extensive experience are encouraged.
