RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Drought stress is considered as one of the major production constraints in rice. RPHR-1005R is a restorer line (R-Line) with a popular, medium-slender grain type, and is the male parent of the popular Indian rice hybrid, DRR-H3. However, both the hybrid and its restorer are highly vulnerable to the drought stress, which limits the adoption of the hybrid. Therefore, the selection of the restorer line RPHR-1005R has been made with the objective of enhancing drought tolerance. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we have introgressed a major QTL for grain yield under drought (qDTY 1.1) from Nagina22 through a marker-assisted backcross breeding (MABB) strategy. PCR based SSR markers linked to grain yield under drought (qDTY1.1 - RM431, RM11943), fertility restorer genes (Rf3-DRRM-Rf3-10, Rf4-RM6100) and wide compatibility (S5n allele) were deployed for foreground selection. At BC2F1, a single plant (RPHR6339-4-16-14) with target QTL in heterozygous condition and with the highest recurrent parent genome recovery (85.41%) and phenotypically like RPHR-1005R was identified and selfed to generate BC2F2. Fifty-eight homozygous lines were advanced to BC2F4 and six promising restorer lines and a hybrid combination (APMS6A/RPHR6339-4-16-14-3) were identified. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the six improved restorer lines could be employed for developing heterotic hybrids possessing reproductive stage drought tolerance. The hybrid combination (APMS6A/RPHR6339-4-16-14-3) was estimated to ensure stable yields in drought-prone irrigated lowlands as well as in directly seeded aerobic and upland areas of India.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Surface roughness promotes adhesion and colonization of denture plaque. Therefore, it is important to know the effects of polishing and finishing on the surface roughness of various acrylic resin materials. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the effects of different conventional lathe polishing techniques on heat cured acrylic resins in producing surface roughness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different commercially available heat-cured acrylic resin materials namely DPI, Meliodent and Trevalon Hi were selected. 30 Specimens of each acrylic material (30 x 3 = 90, 10 x 60 x 2mm) were prepared and divided into 5 groups, each group consisted of 6 Nos. of specimens per material(6x3=18) and were grouped as Group A(unfinished), Group B (finished), Group C (Polishing Paste), Group D (Polishing Cake) and Group E (Pumice and Gold rouge). The resulted surface roughness (µm) was measured using Perthometer and observed under Scanning Electron Microscope. The values obtained were subjected statistical analyses. RESULTS: Among the materials tested, better results were obtained with Trevalon Hi followed by Meliodent and DPI. Among the polishing methods used, superior results were obtained with universal polishing paste followed by polishing cake; Pumice and Gold rouge. Although Pumice and Gold rouge values produced greater roughness value, they were well within the threshold value of 0.2 mm.

RESUMO

Aim: The Aim of the study was to evaluate the reproducibility of condylar inclination values obtained using three different interocclusal recording materials in Hanau Wide-Vue semi-adjustable articulator and to compare those values of condylar inclination with panoramic radiographic images. Settings and Design: In Vivo Comparative study. Materials and Methods: The clinical trial was carried out in the Department of Prosthodontics, M. R Ambedkar Dental College and Hospital, Bengaluru. A total of 30 dentulous subjects aged between 20 and 40 years were selected, without any signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders. With the help of a custom-made protrusive guide, protrusive records for three materials were made. These records were used for programming the articulator and the respective horizontal condylar inclination (HCI) value, and panoramic radiographs were made. The values obtained were statistically analyzed. Statistical Analysis Used: Independent t-test, multiple comparisons using Bonferroni method followed by Analysis of variances (ANOVA) were used. Results: Among each pair of groups there exists a significant difference, i.e., the mean condylar inclination (degree) was found to be statistically significant between wax and polyvinyl siloxane (P < 0.01) as well as between wax and polyether (P < 0.01). No significant difference was observed between polyvinyl siloxane and polyether (P > 0.05). Conclusion: HCI values differed depending on the type of material employed. The study concluded that the protrusive condylar guidance angles obtained by panoramic radiograph can be used in programming the semi-adjustable articulator and among the materials polyether gave the highest Condylar Guidance values with less variability and wax gave lowest values with greater variation.

RESUMO

Interaction between gene products encoded by the cytoplasm and nucleus form the core of wild abortive cytoplasmic male sterile (WA-CMS) system of hybrid breeding in rice. Gaining insights into such interactions can be helpful in the development of better three-line rice hybrids and also identify novel male sterility systems. In the present study, the whole transcriptome profiles of immature florets of IR58025A, a WA-CMS line and its isonuclear maintainer line, IR58025B, collected at pre-anthesis stage were compared to delineate the pathways involved in pollen abortion and male sterility. Among the 774 differentially expressed transcripts (DETs), 496 were down regulated and 278 were up regulated in IR58025A compared to IR58025B. The genes associated with oxidative stress response, defense response, etc. were significantly up-regulated, while those associated with respiration, cell wall modifications, pectinesterase activity, etc. were significantly down-regulated in the WA-CMS line. Gene ontology and pathway enrichment analyses revealed the down-regulation of both nuclear and organellar genes involved in key metabolic processes of cell respiration, photosynthesis and other energy yielding metabolites in IR58025A, relative to IR58025B, indicating a general shift toward conservation of energy and other key resources in the florets of WA-CMS line. The data derived from RNA-Seq analysis were validated through qRT-PCR analysis. Based on the results obtained, it can be hypothesized that pollen abortion principally occurs due to up-regulation of pathways leading to oxidative stress leading to energy starvation conditions in consonance with reduced expression of genes associated with the cell wall formation, respiration, and other key metabolic processes.

RESUMO

In this era of fast developing technologies and innovative ideas, the need for faster treatment has become a necessity. Treatment with lasers that is much less time-consuming and painless is accepted and appreciated by the patient. Use of Lasers is not new; they have been in use for decades since their development by Maiman in 1960. Lasers have travelled a long way from ruby lasers to erbium lasers and are being fondly used in every aspect of dental treatment. This article aims at elaborate the use and applications of lasers in the field of esthetic dentistry.

RESUMO

Excessive gingival visibility during smile is a common esthetic complaint in dentistry, but excessive gingival visibility in resting lip position is relatively uncommon condition. Several exclusive radical to conservative surgical treatment or its combination with orthodontic therapy to treat this condition are within the reach of every patient nowadays. A case report of an excessive gingival visibility because of altered passive eruption along with inversely inclined maxillary anterior teeth is presented here. A relatively simple treatment approach combining periodontal and restorative therapy is used here to achieve the desirable aesthetic results. The gingival exposure resulting from altered passive eruption was completely managed by a gingivectomy, but the inclined appearance of teeth was still an aesthetic complaint. After complete healing of gingivectomy surgery, appropriately designed crowns were given to rectify the inversely inclined appearance. A complete rehabilitation of patient's smile could be achieved, the case was followed up for 3 years and the condition was found satisfactory.

RESUMO

To minimize the weight of the prosthesis various techniques that create a hollow prosthesis have been known. There are a lot of drawbacks of these techniques as they are complex, time consuming, and of high cost. Here is a technique that utilizes putty material for fabricating hollow denture prosthesis.
