Gestation length, birth weight, and weaning weight of F2 Nelore-Angus calves (n = 737) with designed extensive full-sibling and half-sibling relatedness were evaluated for association with 34,957 SNP markers. In analyses of birth weight, random relatedness was modeled three ways: 1) none, 2) random animal, pedigree-based relationship matrix, or 3) random animal, genomic relationship matrix. Detected birth weight-SNP associations were 1,200, 735, and 31 for those parameterizations respectively; each additional model refinement removed associations that apparently were a result of the built-in stratification by relatedness. Subsequent analyses of gestation length and weaning weight modeled genomic relatedness; there were 40 and 26 trait-marker associations detected for those traits, respectively. Birth weight associations were on BTA14 except for a single marker on BTA5. Gestation length associations included 37 SNP on BTA21, 2 on BTA27 and one on BTA3. Weaning weight associations were on BTA14 except for a single marker on BTA10. Twenty-one SNP markers on BTA14 were detected in both birth and weaning weight analyses.

The objectives of this study were to 1) compare four models for breeding value prediction using genomic or pedigree information and 2) evaluate the impact of fixed effects that account for family structure. Comparisons were made in a Nellore-Angus population comprising F2, F3 and half-siblings to embryo transfer F2 calves with records for overall temperament at weaning (TEMP; n = 769) and Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF; n = 387). After quality control, there were 34,913 whole genome SNP markers remaining. Bayesian methods employed were BayesB (πÌ = 0.995 or 0.997 for WBSF or TEMP, respectively) and BayesC (π = 0 and πÌ), where πÌ is the ideal proportion of markers not included. Direct genomic values (DGV) from single trait Bayesian analyses were compared to conventional pedigree-based animal model breeding values. Numerically, BayesC procedures (using πÌ) had the highest accuracy of all models for WBSF and TEMP (ρÌgg = 0.843 and 0.923, respectively), but BayesB had the least bias (regression of performance on prediction closest to 1, ßÌy,x = 2.886 and 1.755, respectively). Accounting for family structure decreased accuracy and increased bias in prediction of DGV indicating a detrimental impact when used in these prediction methods that simultaneously fit many markers.

Animal scientists face an increasing need to communicate with the lay public because of the public's interest in the origin and production of animal-sourced foods. Consumers' increased interest infers a critical need for effective communication skills among animal science graduates. Effective communication skills are mandatory if students are to explain scientific information and mitigate misinformation about livestock production. The purpose of our study was to investigate the communication styles and communication effectiveness of upper-level animal science students enrolled in a beef cattle production and management course at Texas A&M University across five semesters (Nâ =â 241; spring 2018â =â 61, summer 2018â =â 15, Fall 2018â =â 54, spring 2019â =â 55, and fall 2019â =â 56). Male animal science students (nâ =â 25; 32.9%) preferred assertive and direct communication (a driver communication style) and female students (nâ =â 32; 19.4%) preferred collaborative and accommodating communication (an amiable communication style). Students were moderately experienced with beef cattle production (Mâ =â 3.09, SDâ =â 1.07) before enrolling in the course; however, former beef cattle experiences did not influence their preferred communication style [F(10, 230)â =â 0.36, Pâ =â 0.96]. Researchers also observed students' communication skills during an end-of-semester beef cattle production and management project presentation and identified strengths and weaknesses. Students demonstrated strong, in-depth animal industry knowledge, an ability to connect beef production techniques to management success, and critical thinking skills when answering questions. Oral communication skills warranting improvement included integrating visual aids and/or visual slides to support findings, using improved stage presence and confidence, and sharing responsibilities when presenting as a team. Finally, completion of a supplemental communication training module, intended to develop oral communication skills, significantly improved [F(1, 55)â =â 4.16, Pâ =â 0.046] students' beef cattle production and management project presentation scores. As students become aware of their communication preferences and tendencies, they become equipped to adjust their communication practices and techniques when needed. Through this study, we gained insight into students' communication tendencies and skills, which can be used to provide curricular recommendations and enhance students' workforce readiness.

Cow temperament at parturition may be mostly a measure of aggressiveness. The heritability of cow temperament at parturition in Bos taurus cows has been reported to be low. The objectives of this study were to estimate the heritability of cow temperament at parturition, conduct a genome-wide association analysis of cow temperament at the time of parturition, and estimate the correspondence of cow temperament at the time of parturition with cow productive performance and early-life temperament traits in Bos indicus crossbreds. Cow temperament was assessed from 1 to 5 indicating increasing levels of aggressiveness of cows (937 cows and 4,337 parturitions) from 2005 to 2022. Estimates of heritability and repeatability were 0.12â ±â 0.024 and 0.24â ±â 0.018. The estimates of proportion of phenotypic variance were 0.13â ±â 0.019 and 0.02â ±â 0.011 for permanent and maternal permanent environmental components, respectively. Estimates of heritability for maximum lifetime temperament score and proportions of temperament scores >1 were 0.18â ±â 0.07 and 0.13â ±â 0.072. Within cycles (generations), 2-yr-old cows had lower temperament score means than cows in most other age categories. There were low to moderate positive estimates of unadjusted correlation coefficients (râ =â 0.22 to 0.29; Pâ <â 0.05) of unadjusted temperament score with temperament measured on the same females when they were 8 mo old. There were low to moderate positive estimates of correlation coefficients (râ =â 0.09 to 0.37; Pâ <â 0.05) of unadjusted temperament score with calving rate, weaning rate, weaning weight per cow exposed, and weaning weight per 454 kg cow weight at weaning. Cows with the lowest temperament score had lower (Pâ <â 0.05) calving and weaning rate than cows in other temperament categories. Within 3 of 5 cycles, cows with the lowest temperament score (totally docile) had lower (Pâ <â 0.05) weaning weight per cow exposed than cows in other temperament categories. There were 2 SNP on BTA 4 associated with maximum lifetime temperament score (FDRâ <â 0.05). The non-genetic influence of a cow's mother was documented in her own temperament measured at the time of calving; this may be a consequence of learned behavior. Less aggressiveness displayed by cows at the time of calving may be accompanied by lower reproductive and maternal performance.
Cow temperament was evaluated in 1/2 Nellore 1/2 Angus cows from four distinct generations (five herds) from 2005 to 2022. Cows were scored when their calves were processed (1 d age) as 1â =â totally docile, 2â =â protective, but not aggressive, 3â =â moderately aggressive when calf is disturbed, 4â =â very aggressive when calf is disturbed, and 5â =â very aggressive even when calf is not disturbed. Similar to results in Bos taurus cows, the heritability of this trait was low. The repeatability was more moderate, indicating that additional records from a cow would be beneficial for selection purposes. Young cows had lower scores, indicating more docile behavior. This may be because a strong maternal protective instinct develops and strengthens over time. Temperament measured when cows were 8 mo old was moderately associated with their temperament as mature cows at the time of parturition. Cows with low temperament scores (more docile) had, in several cases, lower reproductive performance and production. Experiential accumulation appears to be important for cow temperament near the time of calving, including the cow's experience as a calf from her dam.

In this study, actinin-3 (ACTN3) gene expression was investigated in relation to the feed efficiency phenotype in Bos indicus - Bos taurus crossbred steers. A measure of relative feed efficiency based on residual feed intake relative to predictions from the NRC beef cattle model was analyzed by the use of a mixed linear model that included sire and family nested within sire as fixed effects and age, animal type, sex, condition, and breed as random effects for 173 F2 Nellore-Angus steers. Based on these residual intake observations, individuals were ranked from most efficient to least efficient. Skeletal muscle samples were analyzed from 54 steers in three groups of 18 (high efficiency, low efficiency, and a statistically average group). ACTN3, which encodes a muscle-specific structural protein, was previously identified as a candidate gene from a microarray analysis of RNA extracted from muscle samples obtained from a subset of steers from each of these three efficiency groups. The expression of ACTN3 was evaluated by quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR analysis. The expression of ACTN3 in skeletal muscle was 1.6-fold greater in the inefficient steer group than in the efficient group (p = 0.007). In addition to expression measurements, blocks of SNP haplotypes were assessed for breed or parent of origin effects. A maternal effect was observed for ACTN3 inheritance, indicating that a maternal B. indicus block conferred improved residual feed efficiency relative to the B. taurus copy (p = 0.03). A SNP haplotype analysis was also conducted for m-calpain (CAPN2) and fibronectin 1 (FN1), and a significant breed effect was observed for both genes, with B. indicus and B. taurus alleles each conferring favorable efficiency when inherited maternally (p = 0.03 and p = 0.04). Because the ACTN3 structural protein is specific to fast-twitch (type II) muscle fibers and not present in slow-twitch muscle fibers (type I), muscle samples used for expression analysis were also assayed for fiber type ratio (type II/type I). Inefficient animals had a fast fiber type ratio 1.8-fold greater than the efficient animals (p = 0.027). Because these fiber-types exhibit different metabolic profiles, we hypothesize that animals with a greater proportion of fast-twitch muscle fibers are also less feed efficient.

Accounting for genotype-environment interactions may improve genetic prediction and parameter estimation. The objective was to use random regression analyses to estimate variances and thereby heritability for intramuscular fat (IMF) across longitude and latitude coordinates within the continental United States. Records from the American Hereford Association (n = 169,440) were used. Analyses were first conducted using the continental United States in its entirety, and then as subdivided into two or four regions. Data were analyzed with an animal model, and linear and quadratic random regressions of additive genetic merit on longitude or latitude as covariate (separately). Subdivided data were analyzed with linear random regressions unique to regions. Regions were North and South separated at 40°N latitude, or West and East separated at 99°W longitude using longitude or latitude as covariate, respectively. Further subdivision to four regions included additional boundaries of 44.46° and 36.46°N latitude and 104.55° and 92.22°W longitude. The estimated heritability of IMF from the traditional model was 0.19 ± 0.004. Without regional subdivision of data, quadratic random regression had the best fit for the data based on likelihood ratio tests using longitude or latitude as covariate (P < 0.01). Estimates of heritability from quadratic random regression on latitude ranged from 0.12 in the South to a high of 0.27 at the extreme Northern latitude. Estimates of heritability from quadratic random regression on longitude ranged from 0.17 in the middle of the parameter space (corresponding to the central United States) to 0.37; higher estimates were noted at the extremes, that is, the far West and East longitudes. Random regression analyses of data divided into regions were conducted with a linear coefficient, as increasing to a quadratic polynomial was never accomplished. Results from random regression on latitude in the East region were similar to results from analyses without regions (h2 ranged from 0.09 to 0.32); however, estimates of heritability in the West region had a lower range from South to North (0.14 to 0.27). Estimates of heritability from random regression on longitude with data divided into two regions were similar to those from analyses that did not include region. Estimates in the South region were somewhat lower and had a lower range (0.15 to 0.31) than those from the North region (0.19 to 0.47). When data were further subdivided, estimation of only a subset of covariances among random regression coefficients was possible, that is, within-region covariances of intercept and linear terms (latitude); those and covariances between all linear random regression coefficients were estimated when longitude was the covariate. Results from random regression analyses of data with four regions modeled produced very high estimates of heritability in low latitudes in the furthest West and high latitudes in the furthest East region, with approximate difference of 0.3 and 0.2 between estimates in the two West regions and the two East regions, respectively. Results from random regression on longitude indicated higher estimates of heritability in North region, especially at the furthest East longitudes of the most Northern region. There appeared to be substantial additive genetic variance differences, as well as estimates of heritability, that correspond to different geographical environments as modeled by random regressions on within-region latitude or longitude coordinates.

Objectives were to evaluate the effects of temperament at feedlot arrival and breed type on productivity, feed efficiency, feeding behavior, and carcass quality traits in finishing beef heifers, and to examine interactions between temperament and breed type. Heifers (Angus, Braford, Brangus, and Simbrah, N = 411, BW = 280 kg) were fed a high-grain diet (ME = 3.0 Mcal/kg DM) in pens equipped with electronic feed bunks. Quality grade (QG), yield grade (YG), and Warner-Bratzler shear (WBS) force values (day 1 and 14 postmortem) were evaluated. Relative exit velocity (REV) at feedlot arrival was used as a covariate in mixed models to assess the effects of temperament and interactions with breed type, with means compared at ±1 SD from the mean initial REV. Calm heifers (mean REV minus 1 SD) had 4% greater (P < 0.001) initial BW, 12% greater (P < 0.001) ADG, 8% greater (P < 0.001) DMI, and 4% greater (P < 0.02) G:F than heifers with excitable temperaments (mean REV plus 1 SD). A temperament × breed interaction was detected (P < 0.01) for residual feed intake (RFI). Braford heifers had a more (P < 0.05) negative REV covariate slope (-1.49 ± 0.65) than the other breeds, such that excitable Braford heifers had lower (P < 0.05) RFI than the other breeds with excitable temperaments. Temperament × breed interactions were observed (P < 0.001) for DMI per BW0.75 and bunk visit (BV) duration. Braford heifers had more (P < 0.05) negative REV covariate slopes for both traits than Angus, Brangus, and Simbrah heifers such that excitable Braford heifers consumed less (P < 0.05) DMI per BW0.75 and had less BV duration compared to excitable Angus and Brangus heifers. Calm heifers had 9% greater (P < 0.01) meal duration, and consumed meals that were 22% longer (P < 0.001) and 17% larger (P < 0.001) compared to excitable heifers. Calm heifers had 12% more (P < 0.001) BV events per meal then excitable heifers. Carcasses from calm heifers were 4% heavier (P < 0.05) and had 7% greater (P = 0.05) backfat (BF) depth and tended to have 4% greater (P = 0.07) USDA YG than carcasses from excitable heifers. Additionally, loin steaks from calm heifers had 8% lower (P < 0.05) WBS force than steaks from excitable heifers. Based on a carcass grid with discounts and premiums for HCW, QG, YG, and tenderness, calm heifers returned $62 more (P < 0.01) revenue per animal than excitable heifers. These results demonstrate that heifers with divergent phenotypes for temperament on feedlot arrival differ in their performance, feed efficiency, and feeding behavior patterns, as well as carcass quality and revenue.

The placenta is a major driver of prenatal growth and involved in programming of postnatal performance. We therefore determined placental and embryo-fetal ultrasonographic parameters in early pregnancy and their relationships with birth weight and postnatal weights in a Bos indicus-Bos taurus composite beef cattle population. Pregnancies were generated in 2-yr-old Droughtmaster heifers by artificial insemination after estrus synchronization in 2 consecutive years (2009, n = 36 and 2010, n = 57), with a subset of 2010 heifers used again as lactating 3-yr-old cows in 2011 (n = 24). Each cohort was managed as 1 contemporary group for measurements of Corpus luteum diameter, amnion length and width, placentome width and thickness, and embryo-fetal crown-rump length, at 7 and 8 wk of gestation. This was followed by recordings of birth weight, branding weight at 5 to 6 mo of age and weaning weight 2 mo later. At a significance threshold of P < 0.05, placentome thickness at week 7 was negatively correlated with weights at birth (r = -0.23), branding (r = -0.25), and weaning (r = -0.35), whereas placentome width at week 7 (r = 0.24) and thickness at week 8 (r = 0.29) were positively correlated with birth weight. Thicker placentomes in males at week 7 (7%) difference mirrored sex differences in weights at birth (7%), branding (10%), and weaning (6%). The sex difference trend for birth weight was not consistent across sire-year combinations, ranging from -3.2 to +4.7 kg (birth weight of males - females per sire). These results support the hypothesis that placental parameters at the transition from embryo to fetal stage are major predictors of fetal and postnatal growth, albeit with significant environmentally induced plasticity, in stabilized B. indicus-B. taurus composite populations, and suggest that elements of B. indicus-B. taurus reciprocal differences in birth weight persist in composite populations.

Beef cow stayability is a complex, economically important trait often used as an indicator of a cow's potential lifetime productivity. Stayability is defined as capability of a cow to maintain a perfect record up to 6 yr of age. This age is commonly cited as a financial break-even point, where initial costs of cow development and maintenance are recovered by her cumulative net income from yearly calf receipts. Later-maturing Bos indicus-Bos taurus crossbred cows may experience reproductive difficulty early in life but have a high potential for a long reproductive life span. It was the objective of this study to identify genetic variants associated with measures of beef cow stayability. A population of B. indicus-B. taurus crossbred cows (n = 305) from central Texas was used. Phenotypes for various measures of stayability to 6 yr of age were produced by artificially imposing five different culling criteria on data from the population. Cows were scored either as a 1 (indicating a perfect record through 6 yr) or a 0 (indicating failure at or before 6 yr), under each criterion. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted for each criterion using univariate procedures and prefitting the fixed effect of cow contemporary group. SNP associations for two criteria surpassed the false discovery threshold of 0.15, when a cow was scored as 0 upon her first failure to wean a calf, regardless of reason, through 6 yr (criterion 2), and when a cow was scored as 0 upon her first failure to give birth to a calf, through 6 yr (criterion 3). Associated SNP were found on bovine chromosomes (BTA) 1, 2, 5, 9, 18, and 21 for criterion 2 and on BTA 1, 5, 11, 15, and 24 for criterion 3. A critical region on BTA 5: 43-50 Mb was identified for each criterion. Due to the similarities to prior work, the tendency for B. indicus cattle to experience reproductive difficulties early in life, and due to the large proportion of cows that left the herd at an early age under these criteria, these results suggest that the associations are likely driven by an early life trait such as age at puberty or rate of heifer development.

This study evaluated reproductive, maternal performance, and longevity traits of 143 F1 cows sired by Brahman (Br), Boran (Bo), or Tuli (T) bulls from Angus or Hereford cows from 1994 to 2011. Cow traits were measured at 7 yr of age in 1999 and 2000 for 1992- and 1993-born cows, respectively. From 2004 to 2010, excluding 2008, incisor condition (solid, broken, smooth) scores were assigned to cows remaining in production; scores were evaluated with two models. Broken and solid mouths were each assigned a score of "1" and smooth assigned "0"; Br-sired (0.76) and Bo-sired cows (0.71) had higher scores (P < 0.05) than T-sired cows (0.54). When solid mouths were scored 1 and smooth and broken scored 0, Br-sired cows (0.34) were higher than T-sired (0.01) (P < 0.05), and Bo-sired (0.23) cows were not different from either (P > 0.05). Age level of the cow within birth year was important for all modeled calf traits (P < 0.05). Birth weights were not different among cow inheritance (P > 0.05). Cow type influenced (P < 0.05) 205-d adjusted weaning weight of calves; Br-sired dams (228.1 ± 2.37 kg) produced the greatest weaning weight, followed by Bo-sired (213.7 ± 3.10 kg), and T-sired (201.6 ± 2.69 kg) dams (P < 0.05). Adjusted means for calving rate for Bo-sired (0.92 ± 0.02) cows were higher (P < 0.05) than Br-sired (0.86 ± 0.02) and T-sired (0.86 ± 0.02) cows. Adjusted mean weaning rate was greater (P < 0.05) for Bo-sired cows (0.86 ± 0.02) than for cows sired by Br (0.77 ± 0.02) bulls, but weaning rate for T-sired cows (0.80 ± 0.02) were similar (P > 0.05). Cow weight was greater (P < 0.05) for Br-sired cows (590.5 ± 8.35 kg) than for Bo-sired (505.8 ± 10.46 kg) or T-sired cows (508.5 ± 9.37 kg). BCS at weaning for 7-yr-old cows was similar (P = 0.08) for Br-sired and Bo-sired cows and lower for T-sired cows (P = 0.0005, condition scores 6.0, 6.3, and 5.8, respectively). Boran-sired cows were older when they were removed from the herd, on average (12.7 ± 0.74 y, P = 0.03) than T-sired (10.6 ± 0.61 y); Br-sired cow persistence was intermediate and not different (11.05 ± 0.60 y, P > 0.06) from the others. Boran-sired cows had higher calving and weaning rates and better mouth scores than the other groups; consequently, they had greater longevity as well. Boran-sired and T-sired cows were moderate in size and weighed less than Br-sired cows throughout the study. Tuli-sired cows weaned the lightest calves and had the most tooth deterioration as they aged.

The causes of bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) are multifactorial and include infection with both viral and bacterial pathogens. Host factors are also involved as different breeds of cattle appear to have different susceptibilities to BRDC. Infection with bovine pestiviruses, including bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 (BVDV1), BVDV2 and 'HoBi'-like viruses, is linked to the development of BRDC. The aim of the present study was to compare the growth of different bovine pestiviruses in primary testicle cell cultures obtained from taurine, indicine and mixed taurine and indicine cattle breeds. Primary cells strains, derived from testicular tissue, were generated from three animals from each breed. Bovine pestivirus strains used were from BVDV-1a, BVDV-1b, BVDV-2a and 'HoBi'-like virus. Growth was compared by determining virus titers after one passage in primary cells. All tests were run in triplicate. Virus titers were determined by endpoint dilution and RT-qPCR. Statistical analysis was performed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Tukey's Multiple Comparison Test (PË0.05). Significant differences in virus growth did not correlate with cattle breed. However, significant differences were observed between cells derived from different individuals regardless of breed. Variation in the replication of virus in primary cell strains may reflect a genetic predisposition that favors virus replication.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) has major impacts on beef cattle production worldwide, but the understanding of host animal genetic influence on illness is limited. This study evaluated rectal temperature, weight change and feed intake in Bos indicus crossbred steers (n = 366) that were challenged with BVDV Type 1b, and where family lines were stratified across three vaccine treatments of modified live (MLV), killed, (KV) or no vaccine (NON). Pyrexia classification based on 40.0 °C threshold following challenge and vaccine treatment were investigated for potential interactions with sire for weight change and feed intake following challenge. Pyrexia classification affected daily feed intake (ADFI, p = 0.05), and interacted with day (p < 0.001) for ADFI. Although low incidence of clinical signs was observed, there were marked reductions in average daily gain (ADG) and cumulative feed intake during the first 14 day post-challenge; ADG (CV of 104%) and feed efficiency were highly variable in the 14-day period immediately post-challenge as compared to the subsequent 14-day periods. A sire × vaccine strategy interaction affected ADFI (p < 0.001), and a sire by time period interaction affected ADG (p = 0.03) and total feed intake (p = 0.03).
