RESUMO

The flower-infecting fungus Ustilaginoidea virens causes rice false smut, which is a severe emerging disease threatening rice (Oryza sativa) production worldwide. False smut not only reduces yield, but more importantly produces toxins on grains, posing a great threat to food safety. U. virens invades spikelets via the gap between the 2 bracts (lemma and palea) enclosing the floret and specifically infects the stamen and pistil. Molecular mechanisms for the U. virens-rice interaction are largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that rice flowers predominantly employ chitin-triggered immunity against U. virens in the lemma and palea, rather than in the stamen and pistil. We identify a crucial U. virens virulence factor, named UvGH18.1, which carries glycoside hydrolase activity. Mechanistically, UvGH18.1 functions by binding to and hydrolyzing immune elicitor chitin and interacting with the chitin receptor CHITIN ELICITOR BINDING PROTEIN (OsCEBiP) and co-receptor CHITIN ELICITOR RECEPTOR KINASE1 (OsCERK1) to impair their chitin-induced dimerization, suppressing host immunity exerted at the lemma and palea for gaining access to the stamen and pistil. Conversely, pretreatment on spikelets with chitin induces a defense response in the lemma and palea, promoting resistance against U. virens. Collectively, our data uncover a mechanism for a U. virens virulence factor and the critical location of the host-pathogen interaction in flowers and provide a potential strategy to control rice false smut disease.

Per- and poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are often encountered with nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) in the groundwater at fire-fighting and military training sites. However, it is unclear how PFASs affect the dechlorination performance of sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nFe0), which is an emerging promising NAPL remediation agent. Here, S-nFe0 synthesized with controllable S speciation (FeS or FeS2) were characterized to assess their interactions with PFASs and their dechlorination performance for trichloroethylene NAPL (TCE-NAPL). Surface-adsorbed PFASs blocked materials' reactive sites and inhibited aqueous TCE dechlorination. In contrast, PFASs-adsorbed particles with improved hydrophobicity tended to enrich at the NAPL-water interface, and the reactive sites were re-exposed after the PFASs accumulation into the NAPL phase to accelerate dechlorination. This PFASs-induced phenomenon allowed the materials to present a higher reactivity (up to 1.8-fold) with a high electron efficiency (up to 99%) for TCE-NAPL dechlorination. Moreover, nFe0-FeS2 with a higher hydrophobicity was more readily enriched at the NAPL-water interface and more reactive and selective than nFe0-FeS, regardless of coexisting PFASs. These results unveil that a small amount of yet previously overlooked coexisting PFASs can favor selective reductions of TCE-NAPL by S-nFe0, highlighting the importance of materials hydrophobicity and transportation induced by S and PFASs for NAPL remediation.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a widely observed metabolic disorder that is increasingly prevalent worldwide, leading to substantial societal consequences. Previous studies have conducted two separate meta-analyses to investigate the relationship between MetS and air pollutants. However, these studies yielded conflicting results, necessitating a thorough systematic review and meta-analysis to reassess the link between different air pollutants and the risk of developing MetS. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of relevant literature in databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science up to October 9, 2023. The search was specifically restricted to publications in the English language. Following the screening of studies investigating the correlation between air pollution and MetS, we utilized random-effects models to calculate pooled effect sizes along with their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We would like to highlight that this study has been registered with PROSPERO, and it can be identified by the registration number CRD42023484421. RESULTS: The study included twenty-four eligible studies. The results revealed that an increase of 10 µg/m3 in annual concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, and O3 was associated with a 29% increase in metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk for PM1 (OR = 1.29 [CI 1.07-1.54]), an 8% increase for PM2.5 (OR = 1.08 [CI 1.06-1.10]), a 17% increase for PM10 (OR = 1.17 [CI 1.08-1.27]), a 24% increase for NO2 (OR = 1.24 [CI 1.01-1.51]), a 19% increase for SO2 (OR = 1.19 [CI 1.04-1.36]), and a 10% increase for O3 (OR = 1.10 [CI 1.07-1.13]). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study demonstrate a significant association between exposure to fine particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), and the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Moreover, the results suggest that air pollution exposure could potentially contribute to the development of MetS in humans.

OBJECTIVE: To report on a case of Kabuki syndrome (KS) due to a novel variant of KMT2D gene. METHODS: A child diagnosed with KS at the Fujian Children's Hospital on July 25, 2022 was selected as the study subject. Whole exome sequencing was carried out for the child and her parents. Candidate variant was validated by Sanger sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. RESULTS: The child, a 4-month-old female, had presented with distinctive facial features, growth retardation, cardiac malformations, horseshoe kidney, hypothyroidism, and recurrent aspiration pneumonia. Whole exome sequencing revealed that she has harbored a heterozygous c.6285dup (p.Lys2096Ter) variant of the KMT2D gene. Sanger sequencing confirmed that neither of her parents had carried the same variant. The variant was previously unreported and may result in a truncated protein and loss of an enzymatic activity region. The corresponding site of the variant is highly conserved. Based on the guidelines from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG), the variant was classified as pathogenic (PVS1+PS2+PM2_Supporting). CONCLUSION: The c.6285dup variant of the KMT2D gene probably underlay the KS in this child.

Arabidopsis RESISTANCE TO POWDERY MILDEW 8.2 (RPW8.2) is specifically induced by the powdery mildew (PM) fungus (Golovinomyces cichoracearum) in the infected epidermal cells to activate immunity. However, the mechanism of RPW8.2-induction is not well understood. Here, we identify a G. cichoracearum effector that interacts with RPW8.2, named Gc-RPW8.2 interacting protein 1 (GcR8IP1), by a yeast two-hybrid screen of an Arabidopsis cDNA library. GcR8IP1 is physically associated with RPW8.2 with its REALLY INTERESTING NEW GENE finger domain that is essential and sufficient for the association. GcR8IP1 was secreted and translocated into the nucleus of host cell infected with PM. Association of GcR8IP1 with RPW8.2 led to an increase in RPW8.2 in the nucleus. In turn, the nucleus-localized RPW8.2 promoted the activity of the RPW8.2 promoter, resulting in transcriptional self-amplification of RPW8.2 to boost immunity at infection sites. Additionally, ectopic expression or host-induced gene silencing of GcR8IP1 supported its role as a virulence factor in PM. Altogether, our results reveal a mechanism of RPW8.2-dependent defense strengthening via altered partitioning of RPW8.2 and transcriptional self-amplification triggered by a PM fungal effector, which exemplifies an atypical form of effector-triggered immunity.

Lattice engineering of nanomaterials holds promise in simultaneously regulating their geometric and electronic effects to promote their performance. However, local microenvironment engineering of Fe0 nanoparticles (nFe0) for efficient and selective environmental remediation is still in its infancy and lacks deep understanding. Here, we present the design principles and characterization techniques of lattice-doped nFe0 from the point of view of microenvironment chemistry at both atomic and elemental levels, revealing their crystalline structure, electronic effects, and physicochemical properties. We summarize the current knowledge about the impacts of doping nonmetal p-block elements, transition-metal d-block elements, and hybrid elements into nFe0 crystals on their local coordination environment, which largely determines their structure-property-activity relationships. The materials' reactivity-selectivity trade-off can be altered via facile and feasible approaches, e.g., controlling doping elements' amounts, types, and speciation. We also discuss the remaining challenges and future outlooks of using lattice-doped nFe0 materials in real applications. This perspective provides an intuitive interpretation for the rational design of lattice-doped nFe0, which is conducive to real practice for efficient and selective environmental remediation.

Co-occurrence of organic contaminants and arsenic oxoanions occurs often at polluted groundwater sites, but the effect of arsenite on the reactivity of sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron (SNZVI) used to remediate groundwater has not been evaluated. Here, we study the interaction of arsenite [As(III)] with SNZVI at the individual-particle scale to better understand the impacts on the SNZVI properties and reactivity. Surface and intraparticle accumulation of As was observed on hydrophilic FeS-Fe0 and hydrophobic FeS2-Fe0 particles, respectively. X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicated the presence of realgar-like As-S and elemental As0 species at low and high As/Fe concentration ratios, respectively. Single-particle inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis identified As-containing particles both with and without Fe. The probability of finding As-containing particles without Fe increased with the S-induced hydrophobicity of SNZVI. The interactions of SNZVI materials with coexisting arsenite inhibited their reactivity with water (∼5.8-230.7-fold), trichloroethylene (∼3.6-67.5-fold), and florfenicol (∼1.1-5.9-fold). However, the overall selectivity toward trichloroethylene and florfenicol relative to water was improved (up to 9.0-fold) because the surface-associated As increased the SNZVI hydrophobicity. These results indicate that reactions of SNZVI with arsenite can remove As from groundwater and improve the properties of SNZVI for dehalogenation selectivity.

Sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) was a promising material for degrading halogenated contaminants, but the easy aggregation limits its application for in-situ groundwater remediation. Hence, S-nZVI was decorated onto modified biochar (mBC) to obtain better dispersity and reactivity with florfenicol (FF), a widely used antibiotic. Uniform dispersion of S-nZVI particles were achieved on the mBC with plentiful oxygen-containing functional groups and negative surface charge. Thus, the removal rate of FF by S-nZVI@mBC was 2.5 and 3.1 times higher than that by S-nZVI and S-nZVI@BC, respectively. Adsorption and dechlorination of FF showed synergistic effect under appropriate mBC addition (e.g., C/Fe mass ratio = 1:3, 1:1), probably due to the enrichment of FF facilitates its reduction. In contrast, the contact between FF and S-nZVI could be hindered under more mBC addition, significantly decrease the reduction rate of FF and the reduction capacity of per unit Fe0. In addition, sulfur dose altered the surface species of surface Fe and S, and removal rates of FF correlated well with surface reductive species, i.e., FeS (r = 0.90, p < 0.05) and Fe0 (r = 0.98, p < 0.01). These mechanistic insights indicate the importance of rational design for biochar supported S-nZVI, which can lead to more efficient FF degradation.

Suppressing persistent multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections and excessive inflammation is the key for treating chronic wounds. Therefore, developing a microenvironment-responsive material with good biodegradability, drug-loading, anti-infection, and anti-inflammatory properties is desired to boost the chronic wounds healing process; however, using ordinary assembly remains a defect. Herein, we propose a pH/enzyme dual-responsive polymyxin B (PMB) spatiotemporal-release hydrogel (GelMA/OSSA/PMB), namely, the amount of OSSA and PMB released from GelMA/OSSA/PMB was closely related the wound pH and the enzyme concentration changing. The GelMA/OSSA/PMB showed better biosafety than equivalent free PMB, owing to the controlled release of PMB, which helped kill planktonic bacteria and inhibit biofilm activity in vitro. In addition, the GelMA/OSSA/PMB exhibited excellent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. A MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa caused infection was effectively resolved by the GelMA/OSSA/PMB hydrogel in vivo, thereby significantly boosting wound closure during the inflammatory phase. Furthermore, GelMA/OSSA/PMB accelerated the sequential phases of wound repair.

Amidst progressive advancements in tissue engineering, there has been a significant enhancement in the efficacy of anti-inflammatory hydrogel dressings, addressing a myriad of clinical challenges on wound healing. A frequent complication during the initial stages of deep second-degree burn wound healing is the onset of an inflammatory storm, typically occurring without effective intervention. This event disrupts normal biological healing sequences, leading to undesirable regression. In response, we have customized a tunable, multidimensional anti-inflammatory hydrogel platform based on sulfated alginates (Algs), loaded with Prussian blue (PB) nanozymes. This platform competently eliminates surplus reactive oxygen species (ROS) present in the wound bed. Algs, functioning as a mimic of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (including heparin, heparan sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate) in the extracellular matrices (ECM), demonstrate a high affinity towards inflammatory chemokines such as interleukin-8 (IL-8) and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1). This affinity effectively impedes the infiltration of inflammatory cells into the wound. Concurrently, Algs markedly modulate the macrophage phenotype transition from M1 to M2. Ultimately, our potent anti-inflammatory hydrogels, which strategically target inflammatory chemokines, M1 macrophages, and ROS, successfully attenuate dysregulated hyperinflammation in wound sites. Precise immunomodulation administered to deep second-degree burn wounds in mice has demonstrated promotion of neovascular maturation, granulation tissue formation, collagen deposition, and wound closure. Our biomimetic hydrogels, therefore, represent a significant expansion in the repertoire of anti-inflammatory strategies available for clinical practice.

We examined the association between social vulnerability and HIV diagnoses, linkage to HIV medical care, and viral suppression among adults in the Southern U.S. Data from CDC's National HIV Surveillance System (NHSS) were used to determine census tract-level HIV diagnosis rates and percentages of persons linked to care within one month and with viral suppression within six months of diagnosis among Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and White adults aged ≥ 18 years residing in the Southern U.S. in 2018. Census tract-level social vulnerability data were obtained from the 2018 CDC Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). Rate and proportion ratios were used to determine the difference between the lowest quartile of SVI scores (Q1) and the highest quartile (Q4) by age group, transmission category, and region of residence and stratified by sex assigned at birth. Areas with the highest social vulnerability (Q4) had the highest rates of HIV diagnoses (Black: 56.5, Hispanic/Latino: 27.2, and White: 10.3). Those in Q4 also had the lowest percentages of adults linked to care (Black: 76.1%, Hispanic/Latino: 81.2%, and White: 77.8%), and the lowest percentages of adults with viral suppression (Black: 59.8%, Hispanic/Latino: 68.4%, and White: 65.7%). This ecological study found an association between social vulnerability, HIV diagnoses, and poorer care outcomes among Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and White adults. Tailoring interventions and improving access for persons residing in areas with the highest social vulnerability is necessary to reduce HIV transmission and improve health outcomes in the Southern U.S.

Gigantol is a phenolic component of precious Chinese medicine Dendrobii Caulis, which has many pharmacological activities such as prevent tumor and diabetic cataract. This paper aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism of gigantol in transmembrane transport in human lens epithelial cells(HLECs). Immortalized HLECs were cultured in vitro and inoculated in the laser scanning confocal microscopy(LSCM) medium at 5 000 cells/mL. The fluorescence distribution and intensity of gigantol marked by fluorescence in HLECs were observed by LSCM, and the absorption and distribution of gigantol were expressed as fluorescence intensity. The transmembrane transport process of gigantol in HLECs were monitored. The effects of time, temperature, concentration, transport inhibitors, and different cell lines on the transmembrane absorption and transport of gigantol were compared. HLECs were inoculated on climbing plates of 6-well culture plates, and the ultrastructure of HLECs was detected by atomic force microscopy(AFM) during the transmembrane absorption of non-fluorescent labeled gigantol. The results showed that the transmembrane absorption of gigantol was in time and concentration-dependent manners, which was also able to specifically target HLECs. Energy and carrier transport inhibitors reduced gigantol absorption by HLECs. During transmembrane process of gigantol, the membrane surface of HLECs became rougher and presented different degrees of pits, indicating that the transmembrane transport of gigantol was achieved by active absorption of energy and carrier-mediated endocytosis.

The primary cause of injury and death in the elderly has been reflected in fall the elderly, so the application of reasonable and effective prevention strategies has great significance in reducing the risk of fall in the elderly. The research progress of virtual reality technology applied in preventing fall in the elderly at home and abroad over the years was systematically reviewed in this study. The mechanism of the technology in preventing fall in the elderly was mainly elaborated from five aspects of improving balance ability, gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, muscle strength and the fear psychology of falling. The purpose of this thesis is to broaden the research ideas of medical personnel on the prevention of fall of the elderly, provide more effective clinical practice plans, reduce the occurrence of fall, and guarantee the safety of the elderly.

Rice production is threatened by multiple pathogens. Breeding cultivars with broad-spectrum disease resistance is necessary to maintain and improve crop production. Previously we found that overexpression of miR160a enhanced rice blast disease resistance. However, it is unclear whether miR160a also regulates resistance against other pathogens, and what the downstream signaling pathways are. Here, we demonstrate that miR160a positively regulates broad-spectrum resistance against the causative agents of blast, leaf blight and sheath blight in rice. Mutations of miR160a-targeted Auxin Response Factors result in different alteration of resistance conferred by miR160a. miR160a enhances disease resistance partially by suppressing ARF8, as mutation of ARF8 in MIM160 background partially restores the compromised resistance resulting from MIM160. ARF8 protein binds directly to the promoter and suppresses the expression of WRKY45, which acts as a positive regulator of rice immunity. Mutation of WRKY45 compromises the enhanced blast resistance and bacterial leaf blight resistance conferred by arf8 mutant. Overall, our results reveal that a microRNA coordinates rice broad-spectrum disease resistance by suppressing multiple target genes that play different roles in disease resistance, and uncover a new regulatory pathway mediated by the miR160a-ARF8 module. These findings provide new resources to potentially improve disease resistance for breeding in rice.

During 2018, Black or African American (Black) persons accounted for 43% of all new diagnoses of HIV infection in the United States (1). The annual diagnosis rate (39.2 per 100,000 persons) among Black persons was four times the rate among all other racial/ethnic groups combined, indicating a profound disparity in HIV diagnoses (1,2). Community-level social and structural factors, such as social vulnerability, might help explain the higher rate of HIV diagnoses among Black persons. Social vulnerability refers to the potential negative health effects on communities caused by external stresses (3). CDC used National HIV Surveillance System (NHSS)* and Social Vulnerability Index (SVI)† data to examine the association between diagnosed HIV infections and social vulnerability among Black adults aged ≥18 years. Black adults in communities in the highest quartile of SVI were 1.5 times (rate ratio [RR] = 1.5; 95% CI = 1.4-1.6) as likely to receive a diagnosis of HIV infection as were those in communities in the lowest quartile. Because of a history of racial discrimination and residential segregation, some Black persons in the United States reside in communities with the highest social vulnerability (4,5), and this finding is associated with experiencing increased risk for HIV infection. The development and prioritization of interventions that address social determinants of health (i.e., the conditions in which persons are born, grow, live, work, and age), are critical to address the higher risk for HIV infection among Black adults living in communities with high levels of social vulnerability. Such interventions might help prevent HIV transmission and reduce disparities among Black adults.

Healthy aquatic ecosystems can offer basic ecological services for the sustainable development of humans and society. Water quality greatly influences the macroinvertebrate community in aquatic ecosystems and can alter the aquatic ecosystem's health status. However, the quantitative relationship between macroinvertebrate community and water quality factors in rivers remains unclear, particularly in urban rivers, which are strongly affected by human activities. Therefore, a new framework for the quantitative analysis between macroinvertebrate community and key water quality driving factors was developed in the study, meanwhile, the aquatic ecosystem health conditions were evaluated and validated by different methods. The framework was applied to a typical urban river, the North Canal River, which is regarded as the "mother river" of Beijing. Combined with the redundancy analysis (RDA) and the threshold indicator taxa analysis (TITAN), the water quality driving factors and their indicator species were identified and the corresponding response threshold was determined. Based on the benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI), the multi-metric rapid bioassessment method, and the biological monitoring working party (BMWP) score, the aquatic ecosystem health condition in the basin was comprehensively evaluated. The results show that fluoride, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia-nitrogen and total phosphorus were the key water quality driving factors influencing the community structure of macroinvertebrates. Four indicator species of ammonia-nitrogen were identified by the TITAN method with a threshold range of 1.09-6.94 mg L-1, and three indicator species of total phosphorus were identified with a threshold range of 0.48-1.27 mg L-1. According to the results of the aquatic ecosystem health assessment, the river ecosystem was generally unhealthy and the upstream was better than downstream; the health condition in the mountainous areas of Changping district was the best, while that in Chaoyang district and the central city area was the worst. The framework could provide a strong basis for ecological restoration and pollution control of the urban rivers and become an important tool for the rehabilitation of aquatic ecosystems.

Based on the time-independent rate equations and nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we simulate a 200 MHz all-polarization-maintaining (PM) mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. The cavity round trip evolution toward stable mode locking is present. Additionally, the gain coefficients along the gain fiber as well as the pulses, chirp, and spectra at different locations in the cavity are examined. The effects of chirped fiber Bragg grating parameters on the pulse shape and spectrum profile are also investigated. According to the calculations, we experimentally realize a 200 MHz femtosecond fiber laser with 115 mW output power. The timing jitter and integrated relative intensity noise are measured as 158 fs (1 kHz to 10 MHz) and 0.0513% (1 Hz to 300 kHz), respectively. Eventually, an amplified average power of 610 mW and 79 fs compressed pulses with a peak power of approximately 28 kW are obtained. The exhibited all-PM femtosecond fiber laser system can be adopted as the foundation for an optical frequency comb.

The detection method of characteristic spectrum for reference samples was established by preparing 15 batches of the reference samples of Huagan Decoction, and the peak attribution and the similarity range in the characteristic spectrum were clarified. The ranges of paste-forming rate, content, and transfer rate of the index components including geniposide, paeonol, and paeoniflorin were analyzed. The key quality attribute of the reference samples of Huagan Decoction was defined. The results showed that the 15 batches of the reference samples of Huagan Decoction had good similarities in the characteristic spectrum, which were all higher than 0.9. According to the information of characteristic peak, there were 18 characteristic peaks in the whole prescription, including seven common characteristic peaks from green tangerine peel and dried tangerine peel, four characteristic peaks from tree peony root bark(three of them were common characteristic peaks from tree peony root bark and red peony root), five characteristic peaks from cape jasmine fruit, one characteristic peak from paniculate bolbostemma, and one characteristic peak from oriental waterplantain rhizome.The paste-forming rate of the 15 batches of reference samples was 14.73%-18.83%. The content of geniposide was 1.68%-2.87%, with the average transfer rate of 70.05%±11.13%. The content of paeonol was 0.10%-0.16%, with the average transfer rate of 9.38%±1.78%. The content of paeoniflorin was 1.94%-2.74%, with the average transfer rate of 36.69%±4.63%. This study analyzed the quality value transfer of the reference samples of Huagan Decoction by the evaluation mode of combining the characteristic spectrum, the paste-forming rate, and the content of index components. The findings of this study initially established a stable and feasible standard decoction evaluation method and provided references for the quality control and the subsequent development of relevant preparations of Huagan Decoction.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play roles in various biological processes, but their functions in the rice (Oryza sativa) response to Magnaporthe oryzae remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate that circRNAs are involved in the rice-M. oryzae interaction using comparative circRNA-sequencing and transgenic approaches. We identified 2932 high-confidence circRNAs from young leaves of the blast-resistant accession International Rice Blast Line Pyricularia-Kanto51-m-Tsuyuake (IR25) and the blast-susceptible accession Lijiangxin Tuan Heigu (LTH) under M oryzae-infected or uninfected conditions; 636 were detected specifically upon M oryzae infection. The circRNAs in IR25 were significantly more diverse than those in LTH, especially under M. oryzae infection. Particularly, the number of circRNAs generated per parent gene was much higher in IR25 than in LTH and increased in IR25 but decreased in LTH upon M. oryzae infection. The higher diversity of circRNAs in IR25 was further associated with more frequent 3' and 5' alternative back-splicing and usage of complex splice sites. Moreover, a subset of circRNAs was differentially responsive to M oryzae in IR25 and LTH. We further confirmed that circR5g05160 promotes rice immunity against M oryzae Therefore, our data indicate that circRNA diversity is associated with different responses to M oryzae infection in rice and provide a starting point to investigate a new layer of regulation in the rice-M oryzae interaction.

High volatility would lead to a highly flammable hazard, explosion danger, low regeneration efficiency and air pollution. Eutectic solvents (ESs) are assumed to be nonvolatile; however, the assumption is not correct. Here, we, for the first time, find that superbase-derived ESs are highly volatile. Even at room temperature (i.e., 25 °C) and atmospheric pressure, the mass loss of ESs could reach as high as 43.5% after 20 h of exposure. Superbase-derived ESs are promising solvents for CO2 capture, and they are also highly volatile after CO2 capture. We found that typical ethylene glycol : 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (EG : DBU (4 : 1)) has a three-stage volatilizing mechanism. EG and DBU volatilize first by breaking weak hydrogen-bonding interactions (1st stage), followed by the destruction of strong hydrogen-bonding interactions (2nd stage), and finally by destroying much stronger hydrogen-bonding interactions (3rd stage). This work presents a new horizon that ESs and their mixture with CO2 are highly volatile, which is helpful for mitigating laboratory explosion, combustion hazards, air pollution and designing new types of ESs with negligible volatility.
