RESUMO

Because of their ultra-light, ultra-thin, and flexible design, metalenses exhibit significant potential in the development of highly integrated cameras. However, the performances of metalens-integrated camera are constrained by their fixed architectures. Here we proposed a high-quality imaging method based on deep learning to overcome this constraint. We employed a multi-scale convolutional neural network (MSCNN) to train an extensive pair of high-quality and low-quality images obtained from a convolutional imaging model. Through our method, the imaging resolution, contrast, and distortion have all been improved, resulting in a noticeable overall image quality with SSIM over 0.9 and an improvement in PSNR over 3 dB. Our approach enables cameras to combine the advantages of high integration with enhanced imaging performances, revealing tremendous potential for a future groundbreaking imaging technology.

RESUMO

Topological photonic states provide intriguing strategies for robust light manipulations, however, it remains challenging to perfectly excite these topological eigenstates due to their complicated mode profiles. In this work, we propose to realize the exact eigenmode of the topological edge states by supersymmetric (SUSY) structures. By adiabatically transforming the SUSY partner to its main topological structure, the edge modes can be perfectly excited with simple single-site input. We experimentally verify our strategy in integrated silicon waveguides in telecommunication wavelength, showing a broad working bandwidth. Moreover, a shortcut-to-adiabaticity strategy is further applied to speed up the adiabatic pump process by inverse-design approaches, thus enabling fast mode evolutions and leading to reduced device size. Our method is universal and beneficial to the topology-based or complex eigenmodes systems, ranging from photonics and microwaves to cold atoms and acoustics.

Photonic structures with Weyl points (WPs), including type I and type II, promise nontrivial surface modes and intriguing light manipulations for their three-dimensional topological bands. While previous studies mainly focus on exploring WPs in a uniform Weyl structure, here we establish Weyl heterostructures (i.e., a nonuniform Weyl lattice) with different rotational orientations in the synthetic dimension by nanostructured photonic waveguides. In this work, we unveil a transition between bound and extended modes on the interface of type-II Weyl heterostructures by tuning their rotational phases, despite the reversed topological order across the interface. This mode transition is also manifested from the total transmission to total reflection at the interface. All of these unconventional effects are attributed to the tilted dispersion of type-II Weyl band structure that can lead to mismatched bands and gaps across the interface. As a comparison, the type-I Weyl heterostructures lack the phase transition due to the untilted band structure. This work establishes a flexible scheme of artificial Weyl heterostructures that opens a new avenue toward high-dimensional topological effects and significantly enhances our capabilities in on-chip light manipulations.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a highly heterogeneous and aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. Pyroptosis triggered by gasdermins family proteins is reported vital for tumor microenvironment and cancer progression. However, pyroptosis-related gene expression and its relationship with immune infiltration and prognosis of HNSCC have not been fully defined. MATERIAL AND METHODS: RNA-sequencing data of HNSCC patients were acquired from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. A pyroptosis-related gene expression signature and infiltrated immune cells were analyzed. Univariate, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and multivariate Cox regression and nomogram analyses were used to construct a clinical-molecular risk model for survival prognosis. RESULTS: HNSCC was classified into three different molecular subtypes based on the expression information of pyroptosis-related genes. Immune cell infiltration was demonstrated to be distinct between the three subtypes. The segregation of patients into the high-risk group and low-risk group, were carried out using the signature of differential expression genes (DEGs) signature among the three molecular subtypes. The precision of this signature was corroborated by Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis with the 3-year area under time-dependent ROC curve (AUC) reaching 0.711. The risk model was validated in another dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Subsequently we established a clinical-molecular nomogram which combined the risk score with age and stage. The calibration plots for predicting the overall survival rate of 1-, 3-, and 5-years indicated that the nomogram performs well. CONCLUSION: The expression signature that encompasses pyroptosis-related genes could be used as molecular classification for HNSCC and pyroptosis might be a promising therapeutic target in HNSCC.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), exhibiting high morbidity and malignancy, is the most common type of oral cancer. The abnormal expression of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) plays important roles in the occurrence and progression of cancer. The objective of the present study was to establish a prognostic assessment model of RBPs and to evaluate the prognosis of OSCC patients. METHODS: Gene expression data in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were analyzed by univariate Cox regression analysis model that established a novel nine RBPs, which were used to build a prognostic risk model. A multivariate Cox proportional regression model and the survival analysis were used to evaluate the prognostic risk model. Moreover, the receive operator curve (ROC) analysis was tested further the efficiency of prognostic risk model based on data from TCGA database and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). RESULTS: Nine RBPs' signatures (ACO1, G3BP1, NMD3, RNGTT, ZNF385A, SARS, CARS2, YARS and SMAD6) with prognostic value were identified in OSCC patients. Subsequently, the patients were further categorized into high-risk group and low-risk in the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS), and external validation dataset. ROC analysis was significant for both the TCGA and GEO. Moreover, GSEA revealed that patients in the high-risk group significantly enriched in many critical pathways correlated with tumorigenesis than the low, including cell cycle, adheres junctions, oocyte meiosis, spliceosome, ERBB signaling pathway and ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, we developed and validated a novel robust nine RBPs for OSCC prognosis prediction. The nine RBPs could serve as an independent and reliable prognostic biomarker and guiding clinical therapy for OSCC patients.

STUDY QUESTION: Is the ratio of endometrial T-box expressed in T cell (T-bet) and GATA-binding protein 3 (GATA3) changed in patients with recurrent miscarriage (RM) compared to fertile controls? SUMMARY ANSWER: Our study showed a significantly higher T-bet/GATA3 ratio in patients with RM compared with fertile controls. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The endometrial T-bet (Th1 lineage-committed transcription factor)/GATA3 (Th2 lineage-committed transcription factor) ratio could represent the Th1/Th2 balance, which is particularly important for healthy pregnancy. However, a reliable reference range for the T-bet/GATA3 ratio during the peri-implantation period has not yet been established for use in clinical practice. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This was a retrospective study carried out in a private fertility center. The control group included 120 women in couples undergoing IVF treatment for male infertility, who had experienced a live-birth baby following the first IVF cycle. The study group included 93 women diagnosed with RM that experienced at least two consecutive clinically spontaneous miscarriages before gestational week 12. The ratio of T-bet/GATA3 was calculated in the control group and RM group. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Endometrium samples were collected at mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle prior to IVF treatment or pregnancy. The percentage of T-bet+ and GATA3+ cells in total endometrial cells was analyzed using immunohistochemical staining and quantitative analysis. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Using the 95th percentile to define the upper limits of the endometrial T-bet/GATA3 ratio during the mid-luteal phase, the reference range of control fertile women was ≤0.22. Compared with the control group, the RM group exhibited a significantly higher T-bet/GATA3 ratio (P = 0.02), and 19.4% (18/93) women with RM exhibited a T-bet/GATA3 ratio above the reference range in the mid-luteal phase. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: All patients were recruited from a single center. The stability and clinical value of the endometrial T-bet/GATA3 ratio require further investigation. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: The present study suggests that an abnormal endometrial T-bet/GATA3 ratio may be one of the risk factors of RM. Further studies are needed to follow up the pregnancy outcomes in patients with RM with normal and abnormal endometrial T-bet/GATA3 ratio according to the reference range. Weyl medium has triggered remarkable interest owing to its nontrivial topological edge states in 3D photonic band structures that were mainly revealed as surface modes yet. It is undoubted that the connection of two different Weyl media will give rise to more fruitful physics at their interface, while they face extreme difficulty in high-dimensional lattice matching. Here, we successfully demonstrate the non-Hermitian Weyl interface physics in complex synthetic parameter space, which is implemented in a loss-controlled silicon waveguide array. By establishing non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in the parameter space, new Weyl interfaces with distinct topological origins are predicted and experimentally observed in silicon waveguides. Significantly, our Letter exploits the non-Hermitian parameter to create the synthetic dimension by manipulating the non-Hermitian order, which successfully circumvents the difficulty in lattice matching for high-dimensional interfaces. The revealed rich topological Weyl interface states and their phase transitions in silicon waveguide platform further imply potentials in chip-scale photonics integrations.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate a nurse-led shared decision-making model of care for discussing the use of complementary and alternative medicine with diabetic patients and to explore to what extent the risk-benefit assessment of using complementary and alternative medicine can provide a framework for facilitating nurse-patient dialogue and strengthening patient involvement in their disease management. DESIGN: Participatory action research with pre-post intervention. METHODS: A two-run cycle of action and spirals from participatory action research was undertaken using a purposive sampling method to involve healthcare professionals and diabetic patients from September 2021 to June 2022. The nurse-led shared decision-making model of care was designed and implemented congruent with participatory action research principles. Quantitative measures were collected about patients' perceived involvement in shared decision-making and their understanding of the risks and benefits of using complementary and alternative medicine. Patients' outcomes of disease control (fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c) were also collected. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS software (version 28). Interviews were summarized using thematic analysis. An EQUATOR Network guideline for participatory action research supported the preparation of this paper. RESULTS: Comparison of pre-post intervention outcomes showed that patients' scale scores on shared decision-making involvement and understanding of the risk-benefit of using complementary and alternative medicine improved significantly after implementing the model. Fasting plasma glucose improved only slightly after a 3-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The care model strengthens patient involvement in their disease management and makes appropriate decisions about CAM use that should reduce potentially harmful side effects or interactions between CAM and conventional medicine. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND PATIENT CARE: The shared decision-making model of care incorporates evidence-based CAM research into practice, facilitates the standardization of CAM management in diabetes, improves care options for patients and educates nurses about CAM use in managing diabetes. Immune memory represents the most efficient defense against invasion and transmission of infectious pathogens. In contrast to memory T and B cells, the roles of innate immunity in recall responses remain inconclusive. In this study, we identified a novel mouse spleen NK cell subset expressing NKp46 and NKG2A induced by intranasal influenza virus infection. These memory NK cells specifically recognize N-linked glycosylation sites on influenza hemagglutinin (HA) protein. Different from memory-like NK cells reported previously, these NKp46+ NKG2A+ memory NK cells exhibited HA-specific silence of cytotoxicity but increase of gamma interferon (IFN-γ) response against influenza virus-infected cells, which could be reversed by pifithrin-µ, a p53-heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) signaling inhibitor. During recall responses, splenic NKp46+ NKG2A+ NK cells were recruited to infected lung and modulated viral clearance of virus and CD8+ T cell distribution, resulting in improved clinical outcomes. This long-lived NK memory bridges innate and adaptive immune memory response and promotes the homeostasis of local environment during recall response.IMPORTANCE In this study, we demonstrate a novel hemagglutinin (HA)-specific NKp46+ NKG2A+ NK cell subset induced by influenza A virus infection. These memory NK cells show virus-specific decreased cytotoxicity and increased gamma interferon (IFN-γ) on reencountering the same influenza virus antigen. In addition, they modulate host recall responses and CD8 T cell distribution, thus bridging the innate immune and adaptive immune responses during influenza virus infection.

Coupling among closely packed waveguides is a common optical phenomenon, and plays an important role in optical routing and integration. Unfortunately, this coupling property is usually sensitive to the working wavelength and structure features that hinder the broadband and robust functions. Here, we report a new strategy utilizing an artificial gauge field (AGF) to engineer the coupling dispersion and realize a dispersionless coupling among waveguides with periodically bending modulation. The AGF-induced dispersionless coupling is experimentally verified in a silicon waveguide platform, which already has well-established broadband and robust routing functions (directional coupling and splitting), suggesting potential applications in integrated photonics. As examples, we further demonstrate a three-level-cascaded AGF waveguide network to route broadband light to desired ports with an overwhelming advantage over the conventional ones in comparison. Our method provides a new route of coupling dispersion control by AGF and benefits applications that fundamentally rely on waveguide coupling.

Type I photosensitizers with aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIE-gens) have the ability to generate high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which have a good application prospect in cancer photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, the encapsulation and delivery of AIE molecules are unsatisfactory and seriously affect the efficiency of a practical therapy. Faced with this issue, we synthesized the metal-organic framework (MOF) in one step using the microfluidic integration technology and encapsulated TBP-2 (an AIE molecule) into the MOF to obtain the composite nanomaterial ZT. Material characterization showed that the prepared ZT had stable physical and chemical properties and controllable size and morphology. After being endocytosed by tumor cells, ZT was degraded in response to the acidic tumor microenvironment (TME), and then TBP-2 molecules were released. After stimulation by low-power white light, a large amount of •OH and H2O2 was generated by TBP-2 through type I PDT, thereby achieving a tumor-killing effect. Further in vitro cell experiments showed good biocompatibility of the prepared ZT. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first on the microfluidic synthesis of multifunctional MOF for type I PDT in response to the TME. Overall, the preparation of ZT by the microfluidic synthesis method provides new insight into cancer therapy.

In this work, 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene (H4TCPE) was selected as the guest and incorporated into a Eu/AMP ICP host to establish a "lab-on-an-AIE@Ln/ICP" sensor array for identifying and sensing environmental antibiotics simultaneously. First, on the basis of a theoretical study of the antenna effect and reductive photoinduced charge transfer between the as-prepared H4TCPE@Eu/AMP ICPs and antibiotics, respectively, the response from the sensitized time-resolved fluorescence of the host and the unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) of the guest were selected as the main sensing elements for the sensor array. With the regulation of pH, the diverse fluorescence responses for antibiotics with either structural differences (flumequine, oxytetracycline, and sulfadiazine) or structural similarities (oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and doxycycline) were recorded and processed by principal component analysis; systematic analysis of environmental antibiotics was therefore realized. Encouraged by the superior anti-aggregation-caused quenching effect of H4TCPE@Eu/AMP ICPs on the test strip, the distinct fluorescence color changes of the "lab-on-an-AIE@Ln/ICP" sensor array were further explored with the aid of smartphones. The fingerprinting pattern of the sensor array on test paper eventually holds great potential for the point-of-use systematic analysis of environmental antibiotics even in complicated real samples.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) signaling in retinal neovascularization in a mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The OIR model was established in C57BL/6J wild type (WT) mice and TLR2-/- mice. Retinal neovascularization in the OIR model was measured by counting new vascular cell nuclei above the internal limiting membrane and analyzing flat-mounted retinas perfused with fluorescein dextran and immunostained with Griffonia Simplicifolia (GS) isolectin. The expression of TLR2 and VEGF in the retina was detected by immunofluorescence. Expression of TGF- ß1, b-FGF, and IL-6 mRNA in the retina was measured by quantitative real-time PCR. RESULTS: Compared to WT OIR mice, retinal neovascularization was attenuated in TLR2-/- OIR mice. The co-expressions of TLR2 and VEGF were remarkably and consistently increased in WT OIR mice; however, there was no expression of TLR2 and a significant decrease in VEGF expression in TLR2-/- OIR mice. These results suggest that TLR2 plays a central role in OIR model angiogenesis. Expression of TGF- ß1, b-FGF, and IL-6 mRNA were reduced in the TLR2-/- OIR mice, suggesting that the inflammatory response induced by TLR2 relates to angiogenesis. CONCLUSION: TLR2 signaling in the retina is associated with neovascularization in mice. Inflammation contributes to the activation of angiogenesis and is partially mediated through the TLR2-VEGF retinal signaling pathway.

This work demonstrates a new strategy for sensing cerebrospinal acetylcholinesterase (AChE) as a cholinergic biomarker for brain dysfunction based on graphene quantum dot (GQD)-functionalized lanthanide infinite coordination polymer (Ln-ICP) nanoparticles. The ICPs used in this work were comprised of two components, i.e. a supramolecular Ln-ICP host formed by the coordination between the GMP ligand and central metal ion Tb3+, and guest GQDs with abundant functional groups, which were utilized as antenna ligands to further sensitize the fluorescence of Tb/GMP. Upon excitation at 300 nm, the obtained GQD@Tb/GMP ICP nanoparticles exhibited enhanced green fluorescence from Tb/GMP. With the addition of Cu2+, the competitive coordination between Cu2+ and GQDs weakened the antenna effect, leading to a decrease in the fluorescence of GQD@Tb/GMP ICPs. However, in the presence of thiocholine (TCh), a thiol-containing compound hydrolyzed from acetylthiocholine (ATCh) by AChE, a stronger coordination interaction between Cu2+ and TCh occurred, resulting in the restoration of the fluorescence of GQD@Tb/GMP ICPs. Using the method established herein, the cerebrospinal AChE fluctuation of rats with acute organophosphorus pesticide (OP) poisoning or chronic Alzheimer's disease (AD) could be monitored. This study essentially provides a novel approach to realize the direct monitoring of a biomarker for brain dysfunction by regulating the competitive coordination interaction reversibly, which is critical in the early diagnosis and therapy of brain diseases.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is increasingly being used for diagnosing lymphadenopathy. We aim to systematically review the accuracy of EUS-FNA in differentiating benign and malignant mediastinal and abdominal lymph nodes (LNs). METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed on multiple electronic databases through February 2020. A random or fixed effect model generated the pooled sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratio (LR), and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) of EUS-FNA. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression were used to explore sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies involving 2753 patients with 2833 LNs were included. In the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant LNs, EUS-FNA had a pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive LR, and negative LR of 87% (95% confidence interval [CI] 86-90%), 100% (95% CI 99-100%), 68.98 (95% CI 42.10-113.02), and 0.14 (95% CI 0.11-0.17), respectively. The pooled rate of adverse events associated with EUS-FNA was 1.57% (95% CI 1.06-2.24%). The summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9912. EUS-FNA performed in mediastinal LNs gained a sensitivity of 85% (95% CI 81-88%), while in abdominal LNs, it reached 87% (95% CI 82-91%). The sensitivity of the subgroup with rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) was 91% (95% CI 89-93%), while non-ROSE was 85% (95% CI 82-87%). CONCLUSIONS: EUS-FNA is a sensitive, highly specific, and safe method for distinguishing benign and malignant mediastinal or abdominal LNs. However, the sensitivity of EUS-FNA still varies significantly among different centers.

High doses of radiation can cause serious side effects and efficient radiosensitizers are urgently needed. To overcome this problem, we developed a biomimetic nanozyme system (CF) by coating pyrite (FeS2) into tumor-derived exosomes for enhanced low-dose radiotherapy (RT). CF system give FeS2 with immune escape and homologous targeting abilities. After administration, CF with both glutathione oxidase (GSH-OXD) and peroxidase (POD) activities can significantly lower the content of GSH in tumor tissues and catalyze intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce a large amount of ·OH for intracellular redox homeostasis disruption and mitochondria destruction, thus reducing RT resistance. Experiments in vivo and in vitro showed that combining CF with RT (2 Gy) can provide a substantial suppression of tumor proliferation. This is the first attempt to use exosomes bionic FeS2 nanozyme for realizing low-dose RT, which broaden the prospects of nanozymes.

In this work, by fully exploring the stimulus response of infinite coordination polymer nanoparticles (ICPs) and by taking advantage of the particular optical properties of ICP guest tetra(4-sulfophenyl)ethene (TPE-TS) with adjustable monomer emission (ME) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE), we demonstrated a novel sensing mechanism for an anthrax biomarker dipicolinic acid (DPA) based on the competitive coordination interaction regulating the structure of TPE-TS@Eu/GMP ICPs. The double ratiometric fluorescence stemmed from triple response of TPE-TS@Eu/GMP ICPs without spectral cross-interference (ME and AIE from TPE-TS and sensitized emission from Eu/DPA) and a corresponding blue-to-red fluorescent color change, which not only benefited the direct detection of DPA with high sensitivity and selectivity, but also offered a great opportunity to realize real-time monitoring of DPA released by Bacillus subtilis spores. Furthermore, the coffee ring deposition patterns on a test paper were innovatively tuned by the quantity and morphology changes of TPE-TS@Eu/GMP ICPs during their stimulus response toward DPA, which could be exploited as expanded signal channels. By integrating a multichannel responsive coffee ring test kit with image recognition and processing application installed on smartphones, point-of-use analysis of DPA could be realized in a low-cost and high-throughput fashion.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy in pregnancy can lead to substantial maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Early intervention in pregnant women with epilepsy (WWE), accurate assessment of the severity of their condition, and effective treatment are required to improve maternal and neonatal prognosis. Many obstetricians lack experience in monitoring and treating pregnant WWE. AIMS: The aim of this study was to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of pregnant WWE and examine maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: Medical records of 75 pregnant women with a history of epilepsy who delivered at Beijing Tiantan Hospital, China between January 2006 and December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Pregnant women with a history of epilepsy were matched 1:2 with a control group of 150 pregnant women without epilepsy who delivered at Beijing Tiantan Hospital during the same time period. Information including type and frequency of epilepsy and seizures, maternal complications, medication, delivery mode, newborn weight, and newborn Apgar score were recorded. In subgroup analyses, pregnant WWE were stratified according to presence or absence of seizures during pregnancy and generalized seizure vs. nongeneralized seizure. RESULTS: The incidence of anemia, hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, premature rupture of membranes (PROM), cesarean section, and postpartum hemorrhage was significantly higher (p < 0.05), and mean newborn weight and newborn Apgar score were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in pregnant WWE compared with pregnant women without epilepsy. The incidence of premature delivery was significantly higher (p < 0.05), and mean newborn weight was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in pregnant WWE with seizures vs. without seizures. Mean newborn weight was significantly lower (p = 0.01) in pregnant WWE with nongeneralized seizures vs. generalized seizures. CONCLUSION: Pregnant WWE are at high risk of anemia, gestational hypertension, PROM, cesarean section, postpartum hemorrhage, and low newborn weight and Apgar score. Women with epilepsy who experience seizures during pregnancy are at high risk of preterm birth and having low birth weight infants. Pregnant WWE who experience nongeneralized seizures are at high risk of having low birth weight infants. These data emphasize the need to routinely monitor fetal weight on ultrasound and offer appropriate intervention. These findings highlight the need for healthcare providers to take a multidisciplinary approach to the management of pregnant WWE. SYNOPSIS: Pregnant WWE are at high risk of obstetric complications. Women with epilepsy who experience seizures during pregnancy are at high risk of preterm birth and having low birth weight infants. Pregnant WWE who experience nongeneralized seizures are at high risk of having low birth weight infants. These data highlight the need for healthcare providers to take a multidisciplinary approach to the management of pregnant WWE.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between gastric bare area adipose tissues invasion (GBAI) confirmed pathologically and the prognosis of gastric cancer (GC) patients is undefined. Till present, there has not been literature investigating this phenomenon. Here, we aimed at analyzing the implication of GBAI in GC. METHODS: The data of 1822 patients who underwent radical surgery between January 2000 and December 2013 at the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center were retrieved. Pathologically, tumor deposits (TDs) located > 5 mm from the leading edge of the primary tumor and the lymph nodes (LNs) station number 1, 2, 7, and 9 were considered GBAI. Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank test, and Cox's proportional hazards model were employed to analyze. RESULTS: Two hundred and five (11.3%) patients were pathologically diagnosed with GBAI, which was more commonly found in proximal or linitis lastica than distal GC (P < 0.001). There was significant difference in 5-year survival between patients with and without GBAI for stages IIB, IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC, respectively (P < 0.009 for IIB, IIIA, and IIIB; P = 0.021 for IIIC). Among the 205 GBAI patients, 61 had detailed radiological follow-up data in which 26 (34.7%) were found to have retroperitoneal infiltration, 27 (36.0%) had peritoneal metastasis, 10 (13.3%) had hematogenous metastasis, 16 (21.3%) had lymphatic metastasis, and 16 (21.3%) had others. CONCLUSIONS: GBAI was identified as a predictor of unfavorable prognosis for GC and was more commonly found in the proximal or linitis plastica of the stomach than in distal stomach. Retroperitoneal infiltration was one of the most commonly identified metastatic route for GC associated with GBAI after radical surgery.

A smartphone-based detection platform for the determination of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is described. The method is based on the rational design of the stimulus-response of 7-methoxycoumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-MC-3-COOH)-functionalized Eu-AMP infinite coordination polymer (ICP) nanoparticles. The blue fluorescence of 7-MC-3-COOH at 403 nm was suppressed, while the red fluorescence of Eu3+ at 615 nm was sensitized after the formation of 7-MC-3-COOH@Eu-AMP ICP. Upon exposure to ALP, the dephosphorylation of AMP resulted in the destruction of 7-MC-3-COOH@Eu-AMP ICP, and thereby, the blue fluorescence of 7-MC-3-COOH recovered; in the meantime, the sensitized red fluorescence was quenched. With the fluorescence intensity ratio F615/F430 as the signal readout, ALP can be detected within a concentration range 0.001 to 0.15 U mL-1, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.00035 U mL-1. Moreover, fluorescence color changes from red to blue could also be recognized by a portable device with the smartphone as a signal reader, and direct point-of-use testing (POUT) for ALP within a concentration range 0.005 to 0.7 U mL-1 could be realized, with LOD of 0.0015 U mL-1. Endowed with high sensitivity and superior reliability, the assay enabled direct monitoring of P-related water eutrophication in a freshwater lake with ALP as an indicator.
