RESUMO

The impact of microplastics (MPs) on the metabolic functions of the liver is currently unclear and not completely understood. To investigate the effects of the administration of MPs on the hepatic metabolism of normal and obese mice, alterations in the lipid, glucose (Glu), and amino acid regulation pathways were analyzed in the liver and adipose tissues of C57BL/6Korl (wild type, WT) or C57BL/6-Lepem1hwl/Korl mice (leptin knockout, Lep KO) orally administered polystyrene (PS) MPs for 9 weeks. Significant alterations in the lipid accumulation, adipogenesis, lipogenesis, and lipolysis pathways were detected in the liver tissue of MP-treated WT and Lep KO mice compared to the vehicle-treated group. These alterations in their liver tissues were accompanied by an upregulation of the serum lipid profile, as well as alterations in the adipogenesis, lipogenesis, and lipolysis pathways in the adipose tissues of MP-treated WT and Lep KO mice. Specifically, the level of leptin was increased in the adipose tissues of MP-treated WT mice without any change in their food intake. Also, MP-induced disruptions in the glycogenolysis, Glu transporter type 4 (GLUT4)-5' AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway, levels of lipid intermediates, and the insulin resistance of the liver tissues of WT and Lep KO mice were observed. Furthermore, the levels of seven endogenous metabolites were remarkably changed in the serum of WT and Lep KO mice after MP administrations. Finally, the impact of the MP administration observed in both types of mice was further verified in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes and HepG2 cells. Thus, these results suggest that the oral administration of MPs for 9 weeks may be associated with the disruption of lipid, Glu, and amino acid metabolism in the liver tissue of obese WT and Lep KO mice.

Complement component 3 (C3) deficiency has recently been known as a cause of constipation, without studies on the therapeutic efficacy. To evaluate the therapeutic agents against C3-deficiency-induced constipation, improvements in the constipation-related parameters and the associated molecular mechanisms were examined in FVB/N-C3em1Hlee/Korl knockout (C3 KO) mice treated with uridine (Urd) and the aqueous extract of Liriope platyphylla L. (AEtLP) with laxative activity. The stool parameters and gastrointestinal (GI) transit were increased in Urd- and AEtLP-treated C3 KO mice compared with the vehicle (Veh)-treated C3 KO mice. Urd and AEtLP treatment improved the histological structure, junctional complexes of the intestinal epithelial barrier (IEB), mucin secretion ability, and water retention capacity. Also, an improvement in the composition of neuronal cells, the regulation of excitatory function mediated via the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs), and the regulation of the inhibitory function mediated via the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS) were detected in the enteric nervous system (ENS) of Urd- and AEtLP-treated C3 KO mice. Therefore, the results of the present study suggest that C3-deficiency-induced constipation can improve with treatment with Urd and AEtLP via the regulation of the mucin secretion ability, water retention capacity, and ENS function.

Tg2576 transgenic mice for Alzheimer's disease (AD) exhibited significant phenotypes for neuropathological constipation, but no research has been conducted on the association of the fecal microbiota with dysbiosis. The correlation between fecal microbiota composition and neuropathological constipation in Tg2576 mice was investigated by examining the profile of fecal microbiota and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in 9-10-month-old Tg2576 mice with the AD phenotypes and constipation. Several constipation phenotypes, including stool parameters, colon length, and histopathological structures, were observed prominently in Tg2576 mice compared to the wild-type (WT) mice. The fecal microbiota of Tg2576 mice showed decreases in Bacteroidetes and increases in the Firmicutes and Proteobacteria populations at the phylum level. The FMT study showed that stool parameters, including weight, water content, and morphology, decreased remarkably in the FMT group transplanted with a fecal suspension of Tg2576 mice (TgFMT) compared to the FMT group transplanted with a fecal suspension of WT mice (WFMT). The distribution of myenteric neurons and the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), as well as the enteric nervous system (ENS) function, remained lower in the TgFMT group. These results suggest that the neuropathological constipation phenotypes of Tg2576 mice may be tightly linked to the dysbiosis of the fecal microbiota.

This study investigated the laxative effects of phlorotannins (Pt) derived from Ecklonia cava (E. cave) on chronic constipation by evaluating alterations in stool parameters, gastrointestinal motility, histopathological structure, mucin secretion, gastrointestinal hormones, muscarinic cholinergic regulation, and fecal microbiota in SD rats with loperamide (Lop)-induced constipation subjected to Pt treatment. Stool-related parameters (including stool number, weight, and water contents), gastrointestinal motility, and length of intestine were significantly enhanced in the Lop+Pt-treated group as compared to the Lop+Vehicle-treated group. A similar recovery was detected in the histopathological and cytological structure of the mid-colon of Lop+Pt-treated rats, although the level of mucin secretion remained constant. Moreover, rats with Lop-induced constipation subjected to Pt treatment showed significant improvements in water channel expression, gastrointestinal hormone secretions, and expression of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors M2/M3 (mAChRs M2/M3) and their mediators of muscarinic cholinergic regulation. Furthermore, the Lop+Pt-treated group showed a significant recovery of Bifidobacteriaceae, Muribaculaceae, Clostridiaceae, and Eubacteriaceae families in fecal microbiota. Taken together, these results provide the first evidence that exposure of SD rats with Lop-induced constipation to Pt improves the constipation phenotype through the regulation of membrane water channel expression, GI hormones, the mAChR signaling pathway, and fecal microbiota.

Although deformation and aging treatments of Cu-3 wt%Ti alloys dramatically enhance their mechanical properties, the corrosion behavior of ultra-fine grained (UFG) Cu-3 wt%Ti alloys produced by a combination of hot rolling and artificial aging has not been extensively explored yet. To bridge this gap, we herein probe the corrosion behavior of an UFG Cu-3 wt%Ti alloy produced by cold rolling and artificial aging, revealing that cast sample corrosion preferentially occurs around the ß-Cu4Ti phase. Compared to that of the coarse-grained Cu-3 wt%Ti alloy, the corrosion resistance of its UFG counterpart is remarkably higher, which is ascribed to the effects of grain refinement and enveloping between the α-Cu matrix and ß-Cu4Ti in the absence of pitting corrosion. The development of ultra-fine microstructure upon the introduction of severe deformation is shown to dramatically improve the corrosion resistance of aging-hardened Cu-3 wt%Ti alloys without sacrificing their mechanical properties. Finally, we demonstrate that solid solution treatment of the Cu-3 wt%Ti alloy results in serious mechanical property deterioration, even though the thus treated samples feature the lowest corrosion current density.

The biosynthesis and biological activity of colloidal Ag2O nanocrystals have not been well studied, although they have potential applications in many fields. For the first time, we developed a reducing agent free, cost-effective technique for Ag2O biosynthesis using Xanthomonas sp. P5. The optimal conditions for Ag2O synthesis were 50 °C, pH 8, and 2.5 mM AgNO3. Using these conditions the yield of Ag2O obtained at 10 h was about five times higher than that obtained at 12 h under unoptimized conditions. Ag2O was characterized by FESEM-EDS, TEM, dynamic light scattering, XRD, and UV-Visible spectroscopy. Indoleacetic acid produced by the strain P2 was involved in the synthesis of Ag2O. Ag2O exhibited a broad antimicrobial spectrum against several human pathogens. Furthermore, Ag2O exhibited 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (IC50 = 25.1 µg/ml) and 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate (IC50 = 16.8 µg/ml) radical scavenging activities, and inhibited collagenase (IC50 = 27.9 mg/ml). Cytotoxicity of Ag2O was tested in fibroblast cells and found to be non-toxic, demonstrating biocompatibility.

Wound dressings are widely used to protect wounds and promote healing. The water absorption and antifriction properties of dressings are important for regulating the moisture balance and reducing secondary damages during dressing changes. Herein, we developed a hyaluronic acid (HA)-based foam dressing prepared via the lyophilization of photocrosslinked HA hydrogels with high water absorption and antiadhesion properties. To fabricate the HA-based foam dressing (HA foam), the hydroxyl groups of the HA were modified with methacrylate groups, enabling rapid photocuring. The resulting photocured HA solution was freeze-dried to form a porous structure, enhancing its exudate absorption capacity. Compared with conventional biopolymer-based foam dressings, this HA foam exhibited superior water absorption and antifriction properties. To assess the wound-healing potential of HA foam, animal experiments involving SD rats were conducted. Full-thickness defects measuring 2 × 2 cm2 were created on the skin of 36 rats, divided into four groups with 9 individuals each. The groups were treated with gauze, HA foam, CollaDerm®, and CollaHeal® Plus, respectively. The rats were closely monitored for a period of 24 days. In vivo testing demonstrated that the HA foam facilitated wound healing without causing inflammatory reactions and minimized secondary damages during dressing changes. This research presents a promising biocompatible foam wound dressing based on modified HA, which offers enhanced wound-healing capabilities and improved patient comfort and addresses the challenges associated with conventional dressings.

This study evaluated the biological properties of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) extracts. The EtOAc extract of lemongrass had DPPH, TEAC, and nitric oxide-scavenging activity assay results of 58.06, 44.14, and 41.08% at the concentration of 50, 10, and 50 µg/ml, respectively. The EtOAc extract had higher elastase and collagenase inhibitory activities than the 80% MeOH, n-hexane, BuOH, and water extracts and comparable whitening activity toward monophenolase or diphenolase. Also, the EtOAc fraction had higher lipase inhibitory and antimicrobial activities against Cutibacterium acnes among extracts which is known to an important contributor to the progression of inflammatory acne vulgaris, and an opportunistic pathogen present in human skin. Total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations in the EtOAc extract were 132.31 mg CAE/g extract and 104.50 mg NE/g extract, respectively. Biologically active compounds in lemongrass extracts were analyzed by LC-MS. This study confirms that lemongrass extracts have potential use as cosmetic skincare ingredients. Thus, lemongrass can be considered a promising natural source of readily available, low-cost extracts rich in antioxidant, skincare, and antimicrobial compounds that might be suitable for replacing synthetic compounds in the cosmeceutical industry.

Biocalcification is a natural biochemical process, which has been regarded as a promising method for sequestering heavy metals or carbon dioxide in the environment, healing cracks in concrete structures, and stabilizing soil. One of the key factors in this process is calcium carbonate-producing bacteria. The purpose of this study was to maximize the production of calcium carbonate by alkaliphilic Bacillus psychrodurans LC40 isolated from a limestone cave, by manipulating the medium composition for fast and non-detrimental crack healing, and to investigate the mechanism of its production. Strain LC40 could grow well in the strongly alkaline region (pH 9.5-11), indicating its alkaliphilic nature. The optimal medium for calcium carbonate production contained 2% tryptone, 1.5% urea, 0.15% NaHCO3, and 150 mM calcium formate (pH 6). Using this medium, the yield of calcium carbonate at 72 h was approximately 8.6-fold higher than that obtained through Urea-CaCl2 medium. In this culture, the urease and carbonic anhydrase activities were observed simultaneously, and the pH of the medium was found to have increased to 9.4, leading to maximum calcium carbonate production. This suggests that this pH value is achieved by the synergistic action of the two enzymes, resulting in a high calcium carbonate yield. The crystals were characterized by FESEM, EDS and XRD, which confirmed the production of rhombohedral and spherical calcium carbonate crystals containing vaterite and calcite. Strain LC40 completely healed a 0.75 mm wide crack in a very short time of 3 days using the optimized medium as a cementation solution. Our findings indicate that B. psychrodurans LC40 could be a promising candidate for the development of eco-friendly biosealant applicable to environmentally stressed concrete structures.

BACKGROUND: As a laboratory animal resource, the ICR mouse is commonly used in a variety of research fields. However, information on differences in exercise-related characteristics in ICR mice derived from different lineages and the underlying mechanisms remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the intrinsic exercise capacity and a magnitude of response to acute exercise, and sought to identify mechanisms contributing to difference in Korl:ICR (a novel ICR lineage recently established by the National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation, Korea) and two commercialized ICR lineages derived from different origins (viz., A:ICR mouse from Orient Bio Com, the United States, and B:ICR mouse from Japan SLC Inc., Japan). RESULTS: Results showed that despite no significant difference in body weight and weight-proportioned tissue mass of heart and skeletal muscles among groups, the relatively low intrinsic exercise capacity and exaggerated response to acute exercise were identified in B:ICR comparted with Korl:ICR and A:ICR, as reflected by total work and lactate threshold (LT). Also, the mitochondrial efficiency expressed as the complex 1 and complex 1 + 2 respiratory control ratio (RCR) values for cardiac mitochondrial O2 consumption in B:ICR was significantly lower than that in Korl:ICR with higher level of state 2 respiration by glutamate/malate and UCP3 expression in cardiac muscle. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these results indicate that the intrinsic exercise capacity of ICR mouse varies according to lineages, suggesting the role of cardiac mitochondrial coupling efficiency as a possible mechanism that might contribute to differences in the intrinsic exercise capacity and magnitude of response to exercise.

We isolated and characterized novel insoluble phosphate (P)-solubilizing bacteria tolerant to environmental factors like high salt, low and high pHs, and low temperature. A bacterium M6 was isolated from a ginseng rhizospheric soil and confirmed to belong to Burkholderia vietnamiensis by BIOLOG system and 16S rRNA gene analysis. The optimal cultural conditions for the solubilization of P were 2.5% (w/v) glucose, 0.015% (w/v) urea, and 0.4% (w/v) MgCl(2).6H(2)O along with initial pH 7.0 at 35 degrees C. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that B. vietnamiensis M6 produced gluconic and 2-ketogluconic acids. During the culture, the pH was reduced with increase in gluconic acid concentration and was inversely correlated with P solubilization. Insoluble P solubilization in the optimal medium was about 902 mg l(-1), which was approximately 1.6-fold higher than the yield in NBRIP medium (580 mg l(-1)). B. vietnamiensis M6 showed resistance against different environmental stresses like 10-45 degrees C, 1-5% (w/v) salt, and 2-11 pH range. The maximal concentration of soluble P produced by B. vietnamiensis M6 from Ca(3)(PO(4))(2), CaHPO(4), and hydroxyapatite was 1,039, 2,132, and 1,754 mg l(-1), respectively. However, the strain M6 produced soluble P with 20 mg l(-1) from FePO(4) after 2 days and 100 mg l(-1) from AlPO(4) after 6 days, respectively. Our results indicate that B. vietnamiensis M6 could be a potential candidate for the development of biofertilizer applicable to environmentally stressed soil.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies, several strains of mice were used as chemical-induced skin irritation models to identify immunological hazards and elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which irritant dermatitis disease occur. BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice have been used for most of these experiments. Although there are some differences in the immune response to chemical allergens between these strains, few studies have been conducted to determine what regulatory factors contribute to these variations. METHODS: To investigate the cause of high responses to skin irritation in C57BL/6 mice that are widely used to study atopic dermatitis, changes in various immune-related factors such as ear thickness, myeloperoxidase activity, lymph node weight, IgE concentration and cytokine concentration were measured in C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice following phthalic anhydride (PA) treatment. RESULTS: Based on analysis of the skin irritation, C57BL/6 mice showed a greater skin irritation to PA than BALB/c mice, although the IgE concentration and auricular lymph node weight did not contribute to this difference in the response. However, the concentration of several cytokines and chemokines (interleukin [IL]-6 and vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF], keratinocyte-derived chemokine [KC] and regulated on activation normal T cell expressed and secreted [RANTES]) were significantly higher in C57BL/6 mice than BALB/c mice following treatment with PA. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that several of the cytokines and chemokines secreted from irritant site could contribute to the regulation mechanism responsible for the difference in the skin irritation among various strains of mice following exposure to PA.

C57BL/6NKorl mice are a novel mouse stock recently developed by the National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation in Korea. Extensive research into the nature of C57BL/6NKorl mice is being conducted. However, there is no scientific evidence for the phenotypic response to restraint stress (RST), a stress paradigm for modeling depressive disorders, in rodents. In this study, we investigated the repeated RST-induced depressive-like phenotypes in C57BL/6 N mouse substrains (viz., C57BL/6NKorl mice from Korea, C57BL/6NA mice from the United States, and C57BL/6NB mice from Japan) obtained from different sources. The results showed that C57BL/6 N mice derived from various sources exposed to repeated RST resulted in depressive-like phenotypes reflected by a similar degree of behavioral modification and susceptibility to oxidative stress in a duration-dependent manner, except for the distinctive features (increased body weight (BW) and tolerance to the suppression of BW gain by exposure to repeated RST) in C57BL/6NKorl mice. Taken together, the duration-dependent alteration in depressive-like phenotypes by repeated exposure to RST observed in this study may provide valuable insights into the nature of C57BL/6NKorl mice as an alternative animal resource for better understanding of the etiology of depressive disorders and the mechanisms of antidepressant actions.

Gallarhois (GR) is a traditional oriental herbal medicine with various pharmacological effects; however, its effect on gastric ulcer has not been previously explored. We firstly investigated the component and antioxidant activity of GR extract (EtGR) by HPLC analysis and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The results showed that EtGR consisted of gallotannin (68.7%), gallic acid (27.2%) and methyl gallate (4.1%) and that it had a high antioxidant value (IC50 value; 1.93 µg/mL). To evaluate the possible anti-gastric ulcer potential of EtGR, we investigated the effects of EtGR in the model of ethanol/hydrochloric acid (EtOH/HCl)-induced gastric ulcer. Gross and histological gastric lesions, biochemical and gene expression parameters were taken into consideration. The results showed that EtOH/HCl treatment produced mucosal injuries with morphological and histological damage, whereas EtGR co-treatment reduced the gastric injuries. EtGR treatment also decreased the contents of malonaldehyde (MDA) activity relative to the vehicle group. Moreover, EtGR decreased the levels of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression. Finally, EtGR did not induce any specific toxicity in the livers or kidneys of the EtOH/HCl-induced gastric ulcer model. These results suggest that EtGR had stronger antioxidant activity and could be a new useful natural drug for gastroprotection against gastric ulcer. Moreover, these findings provide a scientific basis for the development of drugs from traditional oriental herbal medicines.

MPTP, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine is commonly used to induce nigrostriatal defects to induce parkinsonism and/or parkinsonian syndrome, to replicate the lesions seen in Parkinson's disease (PD), with use in numerous PD models in mice. It has been suggested that various biological characteristics including strain could result in differing mortality rates, sensitivity to MPTP administration, and reproducibility of lesions in mice, but there is no evidence on the sensitivity of C57BL/6 mice from different origins to MPTP and its associated pathological lesions. In this study, we investigated the magnitude of the dose-dependent response to acute MPTP administration in C57BL/6NKorl mice and two commercialized C57BL/6 stocks derived from the United States and Japan. We measured biological features (body weight, temperature, and composition), nigrostriatal neurotoxic responses (dopamine levels, tyrosine hydroxylase enzymes, and protein carbonylation) and motor function. In results, the three different C57BL/6 stocks exhibited similar overall neurotoxic response and locomotor impairment which increased in a dose-dependent manner with acute MPTP administration (10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, and 30 mg/kg, all with external heat support), although some of these differences were not significant. In conclusion, this study provides scientific evidence that C57BL/6NKorl mice can be used as an alternative animal model for practical and targeted PD research.

In the present study, silver nanoparticles (SNPs) were synthesised for the first time using Pseudomonas geniculata H10 as reducing and stabilising agents. The synthesis of SNPs was the maximum when the culture supernatant was treated with 2.5 mM AgNO3 at pH 7 and 40°C for 10 h. The SNPs were characterised by field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction and UV-vis spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated the presence of proteins, suggesting they may have been responsible for the reduction and acted as capping agents. The SNPs displayed 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (IC50 = 28.301 µg/ml) and 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate (IC50 = 27.076 µg/ml) radical scavenging activities. The SNPs exhibited a broad antimicrobial spectrum against several human pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and Candida albicans. The antimicrobial action of SNPs was due to cell deformation resulting in cytoplasmic leakage and subsequent lysis. The authors' results indicate P. geniculata H10 could be used to produce antimicrobial SNPs in a facile, non-toxic, cost-effective manner, and that these SNPs can be used as effective growth inhibitors in various microorganisms, making them applicable to various biomedical and environmental systems. As far as the authors are aware, this study is the first to describe the potential biomedical applications of SNPs synthesised using P. geniculata.

To characterize the changes in global gene expression in the livers of H1/siRNAinsulin-CMV/hIDE transgenic (Tg) mice in response to the reduced bioavailability of insulin, total RNA extracted from the livers of 20-week-old Tg and non-Tg mice was converted to cDNA, labeled with biotin and hybridized to oligonucleotide microarrays. The microarray results were confirmed by a real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Two hundred and fifty-one and 73 genes were up- and down-regulated, respectively by insulin in H1/siRNAinsulin-CMV/hIDE Tg mice compared to the controls. Genes encoding for physiological processes, extracellular defense response and response to biotic stimuli were significantly over-represented in the up-regulated group. Among the down-regulated transcripts, those encoding for extracellular matrix proteins were dramatically over-represented, followed by those related to monooxygenase and oxidoreductase activities. The major genes in the up-regulated categories included Egr1, Saa2, Atf3, DNAJB1 and cCL2, whereas those in the down-regulated categories were Cyp17a1, Adn, Gadd45g, Eno3 and Moxd1. These results indicate that the microarray analysis identifies several gene functional groups and individual genes that respond to a sustained reduction in the insulin levels in the livers of Tg mice. These results also suggest that microarray testing is a useful tool for the better understanding of insulin-regulated diabetes-related diseases.

To investigate whether selenium (Sel) treatment would impact on the onset of diabetes,we examined serum biochemical components including glucose and insulin,endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and insulin signalling proteins, hepatic C/EBP-homologous protein (CHOP) expression and DNA fragmentation in diabetic and non- diabetic conditions of non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice. We conclude that (i) Sel treatment induced insulin-like effects in lowering serum glucose level in Sel-treated NOD mice, (ii) Sel-treated mice had significantly decreased serum biochemical components associated with liver damage and lipid metabolism, (iii) Sel treatment led to the activation of the ER stress signal through the phosphorylation of JNK and eIF2 protein and insulin signal mechanisms through the phosphorylation of Akt and PI3 kinase, and (iv) Sel-treated mice were significantly relieved apoptosis of liver tissues indicated by DNA fragmentation assay in the diabetic NOD group. These results suggest that Sel compounds not only serve as insulin-like molecules for the downregulation of glucose level and the incidence of liver damage, but may also have the potential for the development of new drugs for the relief of diabetes by activating the ER stress and insulin signalling pathways.

Animal model, as an indispensable tool for scientific purposes of biomedical researches and clinical application, is a commonly used in various researches. Regarding to this, it is necessary to establish the metabolic phenotype of animal model to minimize spurious interpretations and ensure a level of accuracy and reliability adequate for experimental research. However, the metabolic phenotype-related analysis within rodent strains derived from different source is nonexistent, especially in C57BL/6Korl mice and Korl:ICR mice (a domestic mouse strain). To compare the physiological and metabolic phenotypes over a period of time, we utilized the C57BL/6 mice (C57BL/6Korl, A:C57BL/6, and B:C57BL/6) and ICR mice (Korl:ICR, A:ICR, and B:ICR) derived from three different sources. Our data showed that average body weight, body temperature, food intake, and water consumption have a similar tendency among the C57BL/6 and ICR groups, except for the higher body weight of C57BL/6Korl mice over a period of time. Moreover, some significant differences was observed in adipose tissue mass and adipocyte size among the groups, with a higher tendency of C57BL/6Korl mice and Korl:ICR mice. Most importantly, resting metabolic rate (RMR) serves as an approximation of the metabolic phenotype showed no significant difference among the groups of C57BL/6 mice and ICR mice, except for the lower oxygen uptake of C57BL/6Korl mice compare to the A:C57BL/6 mice. Taken together, our data suggest that C57BL/6 mice and ICR mice derived from three different sources have an overall similar feature of physiological and metabolic phenotypes.
