BACKGROUND: Advanced assistive technologies (AAT) aim to exploit the vast potential of technological developments made in the past decades to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities. Combining complex robotic technologies with the unique needs of people with disabilities requires a strong focus on user-centered design to ensure that the AAT appropriately addresses the daily life struggles of target users. The CYBATHLON aims to promote this mindset by empowering the AAT target users ("pilots") to compete on race tracks that represent approximations of daily life obstacles. The objective of this work was to investigate the AAT technology development, usability, and user involvement (i.e., application of user-centered design) in the context of the CYBATHLON. METHODS: With an online survey targeting the pilots and technical leads of teams preparing for the CYBATHLON 2020 Global Edition, we investigated to what extent the pilots were involved in device development and how this influences the perceived usability of the showcased AAT. Furthermore, the effects of user-centered design variables on the individual race performances were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 81 responses from 35 pilots and 46 technical leads were collected in the two weeks prior to the event. Of all teams partaking in the included disciplines of the CYBATHLON 2020 Global Edition, 81.8% (36 of 44) were included in the study. User-centered design appeared to be a prevalent practice among the teams, as 85.7% of all pilots reported a certain level of involvement. However, only 25.5% of the pilots reported daily life usage, despite QUEST usability scores of both respondent groups showing moderate to high satisfaction with the respected AAT across all investigated disciplines. An explorative linear mixed model indicated that daily life usage (p < 0.05) and prolonged user involvement (e.g., more than 2 years, p < 0.001) have a significant positive effect on the race performance at the competition. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the CYBATHLON positively fulfills its conceptual goals of promoting active participation and inclusion of people with disabilities in the design and evaluation of AAT, thereby stimulating the development of promising novel technological solutions. Also, our data could underline the value of the competition as a benchmark, highlighting remaining usability limitations or technology adoption hurdles.

Vestibular stimulation in the form of rocking movements could be a promising non-pharmacological intervention for populations with reduced sleep quality, such as the elderly. We hypothesized that rocking movements influence sleep by promoting comfort. We assessed whether gentle rocking movements can facilitate the transition from wake to sleep, increase sleep spindle density and promote deep sleep in elderly people. We assessed self-reported comfort using a pilot protocol including translational movements and movements along a pendulum trajectory with peak linear accelerations between 0.10 and 0.20 m/s2 . We provided whole-night stimulation using the settings rated most comfortable during the pilot study (movements along a pendulum trajectory with peak linear acceleration of 0.15 m/s2 ). Sleep measures (polysomnography) of two baseline and two movement nights were compared. In our sample (n = 19; eight female; mean age: 66.7 years, standard deviation: 3 years), vestibular stimulation using preferred stimulation settings did not improve sleep. A reduction of delta power was observed, suggesting reduced sleep depth during rocking movements. Sleep fragmentation was similar in both conditions. We did not observe a sleep-promoting effect using settings optimized to be comfortable. This finding could imply that comfort is not the underlying mechanism. At frequencies below 0.3 Hz, the otoliths cannot distinguish tilt from translation. Translational movement trajectories, such as used in previous studies reporting positive effects of rocking, could have caused sensory confusion due to a mismatch between vestibular and other sensory information. We propose that this sensory confusion might be essential to the sleep-promoting effect of rocking movements described in other studies.

The aim of this study was to analyze the development of vascular architecture as well as vascular morphometry and morphology of anastomosed microvascular free flaps. Free pectoral skin flaps were raised in 25 rats and anastomosed to the femoral vessels in the groin region. CD31 immunohistology was performed after 3, 7 and 12 d (each 5 animals each) to analyze microvessel density (MVD), microvessel area (MVA) and microvessel size (MVS). Microvascular corrosion casting was performed after 7 and 12 d (5 animals each) to analyze vessel diameter (VD), intervascular distance (IVD), interbranching distance (IBD), and branching angle (BA). Further on, sprout and pillar density as hallmarks of sprouting and intussusceptive angiogenesis were analyzed. Pectoral skin isles from the contralateral side served as controls. A significantly increased MVD was found after 7 and 12 d (p each <0.001). MVA was significantly increased after 3, 7 and 12 d (p each <0.001) and a significantly increased MVS was analyzed after 3 and 7 d (p each <0.001). VD and IVD were significantly increased after 7 and 12 d (p each <0.001). For IBD, a significantly increase was measured after 7 d (p < 0.001). For IBA, sprout and pillar density, no significant differences were found (p each ≥0.05). Significant changes in the vascular architecture of free flaps after successful microvascular anastomosis were seen. Since there was no evidence for sprout and pillar formation within the free flaps, the increased MVD and flap revascularization might be induced by the receiving site.

With the increasing range of functionalities of advanced assistive technologies (AAT), reliable control and initiation of the desired actions become increasingly challenging for users. In this work, we present an analysis of current practices, user preferences, and usability of AAT intention detection strategies based on a survey among participants with disabilities at the CYBATHLON 2020 Global Edition. We collected data from 35 respondents, using devices in various disciplines and levels of technology maturity. We found that conventional, direct inputs such as buttons and joysticks are used by the majority of AAT (71.4%) due to their simplicity and learnability. However, 22 respondents (62.8%) reported a desire for more natural control using muscle or non-invasive brain signals, and 37.1% even reported an openness to invasive strategies for potentially improved control. The usability of the used strategies in terms of the explored attributes (reliability, mental effort, required learning) was mainly perceived positively, whereas no significant difference was observed across intention detection strategies and device types. It can be assumed that the strategies used during the CYBATHLON realistically represent options to control an AAT in a dynamic, physically and mentally demanding environment. Thus, this work underlines the need for carefully considering user needs and preferences for the selection of intention detection strategies in a context of use outside the laboratory.

The dynamics of color centers, being a promising quantum technology, is strongly dependent on the local environment. A synergistic approach of X-ray fluorescence analysis and X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) using a hard X-ray nanoprobe is applied. The simultaneous acquisition provides insights into compositional and functional variations at the nanoscale demonstrating the extraordinary capabilities of these combined techniques. The findings on cobalt doped zinc oxide nanowires show an anticorrelation between the band edge emission of the zinc oxide host and the intra-3d cobalt luminescence, indicating two competing recombination paths. Moreover, time-resolved XEOL measurements reveal two exponential decays of the cobalt luminescence. The fast and newly observed one can be attributed to a recombination cascade within the cobalt atom, resulting from direct excitation. Thus, this opens a new fast timescale for potential devices based on cobalt color centers in ZnO nanowires in photonic circuits.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Gentle rocking movements provided by a moving bed have been proposed as a promising non-pharmacological way to promote sleep. In rodents the sleep promoting effect of rocking movements depended on the peak acceleration (named "stimulation intensity") perceived by the vestibular system. We set out to verify previous reports on the sleep promoting effect of rocking movements and to investigate the importance of stimulation intensity in this process. METHODS: Side-to-side rocking movements along a pendulum trajectory with different peak accelerations (control: 0 m/s2, low intensity: 0.15 m/s2, medium intensity: 0.25 m/s2, high intensity: 0.35 m/s2) were provided for 45 min during an afternoon nap opportunity. Participants were assigned to a low intensity group (n = 10) experiencing control, low and medium intensity stimulation or a high intensity group (n = 12) experiencing control, medium and high intensity stimulation. Sleep and sleep-related memory performance were assessed using polysomnography and a word-pair memory task, respectively. RESULTS: Participants transitioned faster into deep sleep under the influence of medium intensity rocking as was evident by a faster buildup of delta power compared to the control condition (n = 22). The faster buildup did not affect sleep architecture, since e.g., the proportion of the nap spent in deep sleep or latencies did not change. Previously reported effects like a shorter latency to stage N2 and a higher density of sleep spindles were not observed. Sleep quality during control naps of the low intensity group was worse than in the high intensity group. In the low intensity group, we also observed a significant increase in delta power throughout the nap, as well as a higher density of slow oscillations both under the influence of low and medium intensity vestibular stimulation. No such effects were observed in the high intensity group. CONCLUSION: Rocking movements may promote nap sleep in young adults. Due to a difference in sleep quality during control naps between the low and high intensity group no conclusion regarding the influence of stimulation intensity were possible. Thus, optimal stimulation settings in humans need further investigation.

Background: Unlike other episodic sleep disorders in childhood, there are no agreed severity indices for rhythmic movement disorder. While movements can be characterized in detail by polysomnography, in our experience most children inhibit rhythmic movement during polysomnography. Actigraphy and home video allow assessment in the child's own environment, but both have limitations. Standard actigraphy analysis algorithms fail to differentiate rhythmic movements from other movements. Manual annotation of 2D video is time consuming. We aimed to develop a sensitive, reliable method to detect and quantify rhythmic movements using marker free and automatic 3D video analysis. Method: Patients with rhythmic movement disorder (n = 6, 4 male) between age 5 and 14 years (M: 9.0 years, SD: 4.2 years) spent three nights in the sleep laboratory as part of a feasibility study (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03528096). 2D and 3D video data recorded during the adaptation and baseline nights were analyzed. One ceiling-mounted camera captured 3D depth images, while another recorded 2D video. We developed algorithms to analyze the characteristics of rhythmic movements and built a classifier to distinguish between rhythmic and non-rhythmic movements based on 3D video data alone. Data from 3D automated analysis were compared to manual 2D video annotations to assess algorithm performance. Novel indices were developed, specifically the rhythmic movement index, frequency index, and duration index, to better characterize severity of rhythmic movement disorder in children. Result: Automatic 3D video analysis demonstrated high levels of agreement with the manual approach indicated by a Cohen's kappa >0.9 and F1-score >0.9. We also demonstrated how rhythmic movement assessment can be improved using newly introduced indices illustrated with plots for ease of visualization. Conclusion: 3D video technology is widely available and can be readily integrated into sleep laboratory settings. Our automatic 3D video analysis algorithm yields reliable quantitative information about rhythmic movements, reducing the burden of manual scoring. Furthermore, we propose novel rhythmic movement disorder severity indices that offer a means to standardize measurement of this disorder in both clinical and research practice. The significance of the results is limited due to the nature of a feasibility study and its small number of samples. A larger follow up study is needed to confirm presented results.

We present a new approach for the approximation of solvent densities around solutes of arbitrary shape. Our model represents a three-dimensional (3d) Born-Green-Yvon (BGY) equation for an arbitrary solute immersed into a molecular (M) solvent, the BGY3dM model. It comprises the famous Kirkwood approximation as closure relation. The molecules of the solvent are modeled as rigid bodies by taking the limit of an infinite restoring force for the intramolecular interactions. Furthermore, short-range potentials as well as the long-range Coulomb interaction are taken into account. The resulting integro-differential equations are efficiently solved by a Picard iteration and a solution of the linearized equations using Fourier transformations. We compare the results obtained from the presented BGY3dM method with results obtained by extensive molecular dynamics simulations for a HCl-like model solvent. Furthermore, we apply the method to carbon disulfide as solvent. The overall performance of the method is promising.

RESUMO

Various types of murine free flaps have been developed for microsurgical training and research. We present a new modification of the free pectoral skin flap in Sprague-Dawley rats. Twelve free pectoral skin flaps were raised according to the standard protocol except that we deviated from it by transecting the common thoracic vessels at the origin of the axillary vessels and anastomosing them end-to-side to the femoral vessels in the groin. This reduced operating time and complications as well as postoperative morbidity and mortality. Overall, it simplified the procedure considerably and therefore made the model more attractive to beginners in microvascular surgery.
