Rationale: Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension involves the formation and nonresolution of thrombus, dysregulated inflammation, angiogenesis, and the development of a small-vessel vasculopathy. Objectives: We aimed to establish the genetic basis of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension to gain insight into its pathophysiological contributors. Methods: We conducted a genome-wide association study on 1,907 European cases and 10,363 European control subjects. We coanalyzed our results with existing results from genome-wide association studies on deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension. Measurements and Main Results: Our primary association study revealed genetic associations at the ABO, FGG, F11, MYH7B, and HLA-DRA loci. Through our coanalysis, we demonstrate further associations with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension at the F2, TSPAN15, SLC44A2, and F5 loci but find no statistically significant associations shared with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension. Conclusions: Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is a partially heritable polygenic disease, with related though distinct genetic associations with pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.

OBJECTIVE: Up to one in five patients with axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) newly initiated on opioids transition to long-term use within the first year. This study aimed to investigate individual factors associated with long-term opioid use among opioid new users with AxSpA/PsA. METHODS: Adult patients with AxSpA/PsA and without prior cancer who initiated opioids between 2006-2021 were included from Clinical Practice Research Datalink Gold, a national UK primary care database. Long-term opioid use was defined as having ≥3 opioid prescriptions issued within 90 days, or ≥ 90 days of opioid supply, in the first year of follow-up. Individual factors assessed included sociodemographic, lifestyle factors, medication use and comorbidities. A mixed-effects logistic regression model with patient-level random intercept was used to examine the association of individual characteristics with the odds of long-term opioid use. RESULTS: In total 10 300 opioid initiations were identified from 8,212 patients (3037 AxSpA; 5175 PsA). The following factors were associated with long-term opioid use: being a current smoker (OR : 1.62; 95%CI : 1.38,1.90), substance use disorder (OR : 2.34, 95%CI : 1.05,5.21), history of suicide/self-harm (OR : 1.84; 95%CI : 1.13,2.99), co-existing fibromyalgia (OR : 1.62; 95%CI : 1.11,2.37), higher Charlson Comorbidity Index (OR : 3.61; 95%CI : 1.69,7.71 for high scores), high MME/day at initiation (OR : 1.03; 95%CI : 1.02,1.03) and gabapentinoid (OR : 2.35; 95%CI : 1.75,3.16) and antidepressant use (OR : 1.69; 95%CI : 1.45,1.98). CONCLUSIONS: In AxSpA/PsA patients requiring pain relief, awareness of lifestyle, sociodemographic and prescribing characteristics associated with higher risk of long-term opioid use can prompt timely interventions such as structured medication reviews and smoking cessation to promote safer prescribing and better patient outcomes.

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) monolayers are transforming electrocatalysis and biosensor design via their increased performance and stability. Despite their increasing use in electrochemical systems, the integrity of the NHC monolayer during voltage perturbations remains largely unknown. Herein, we deploy surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to measure the stability of two model NHCs on gold in ambient conditions as a function of applied potential and under continuous voltammetric interrogation. Our results illustrate that NHC monolayers exhibit electrochemical stability over a wide voltage window (-1 V to 0.5 V vs Ag|AgCl), but they are found to degrade at strongly reducing (< -1 V) or oxidizing (>0.5 V) potentials. We also address NHC monolayer stability under continuous voltammetric interrogation between 0.2 V and -0.5 V, a commonly used voltage window for sensing, showing they are stable for up to 43 hours. However, we additionally find that modifications of the backbone NHC structure can lead to significantly shorter operational lifetimes. While these results highlight the potential of NHC architectures for electrode functionalization, they also reveal potential pitfalls that have not been fully appreciated in electrochemical applications of NHCs.

BACKGROUND: The effects of plant-based milk consumption on the growth of children are unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the relationship between plant-based milk consumption and BMI in childhood. Secondary objectives were to examine the association with height and whether these relationships are mediated by dairy milk intake and modified by age or the type of plant-based milk consumed. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted in healthy children aged 1-10 y through the TARGet Kids! primary care research network in Toronto, Canada. Linear mixed-effect modeling and logistic generalized estimating equations were used to evaluate the association between plant-based milk consumption (number of 250 mL cups/d) and BMI. A mediation analysis was conducted to examine whether dairy milk intake mediated these relationships. Effect modification by age and type of plant-based milk was explored. RESULTS: Among 7195 children (mean age: 3.1 y; 52.3% male), higher plant-based milk consumption was associated with lower BMI (P = 0.0002) and height (P = 0.005). No association was found with BMI categories. Lower dairy milk intake partially mediated these relationships. A child aged 5 y who consumed 3 cups of plant-based milk compared with 3 cups of dairy milk had a lower weight of 0.5 kg and lower height of 0.8 cm. Associations did not change over time and were similar for children who consumed soy milk compared with other plant-based milks. CONCLUSIONS: Plant-based milk consumption was associated with lower BMI and height, but both were within the normal range on average. Future longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether these associations persist over time.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, active surveillance has been introduced as an alternative to excisional treatment in younger women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 because regression rates are high and excisional treatment is associated with increased risk of preterm birth. However, early identification of women at increased risk of persistence/progression is important to ensure timely treatment. Evidence is limited on biomarkers that may be used to identify women at increased risk of persistence/progression. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe human papillomavirus HPV type-specific persistence/progression in women undergoing active surveillance for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a historical cohort study of women aged 23 to 40 years diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 at Aarhus University Hospital from 2000 to 2010. Women were identified through the Danish Pathology Data Bank (DPDB) and were considered as undergoing active surveillance if they had a first record of a cervical biopsy within 2 years after index diagnosis and no loop electrosurgical excision procedure before this. Human papillomavirus genotyping was performed on archived tissue samples using the HPV SPF10-DEIA-LiPA25 system (DNA ELISA [enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay] HPV SPF10 kit and RHA HPV SPF10-LiPA25 kit). Persistence/progression was defined as having a record of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade ≥2 in the DPDB determined on the last and worst diagnosis on a biopsy or loop electrosurgical excision procedure specimen during follow-up. We estimated the relative risk (95% confidence interval) of persistence/progression using a modified Poisson model. RESULTS: A total of 455 women were included. Two-thirds were aged ≤30 years (73.8%) at index diagnosis, and nearly half had a high-grade index cytology (48.8%). Overall, 52.2% of all women had cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade ≥2 during follow-up; 70.5% were human papillomavirus-16-positive and 29.5% were positive for other human papillomavirus types. Human papillomavirus-16 was associated with a significantly higher risk of persistence/progression (relative risk, 1.64; 95% confidence interval, 1.37-1.95) compared with non-human papillomavirus-16. The risk of persistence/progression was highest in human papillomavirus-16-positive women with a high-grade index cytology compared with human papillomavirus-16-positive women with a low-grade cytology (relative risk, 1.29; 95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.61), whereas no differences were observed across age groups. CONCLUSION: The highest risk of persistence/progression was observed among human papillomavirus-16-positive women, particularly those with associated high-grade cytology. These findings suggest that early excisional treatment should be considered in this group of women.

While intensive studies have focused on the synthesis and characterization of new metal-organic nanotube (MONT) structures, the lack of size and morphology control remains an obstacle in broadening applications for this class of materials. Herein, we demonstrate control of MONT crystallite size and morphology by tuning polarity and the protic/aprotic nature of solvents, including dimethylformamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, ethanol, and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, for the isostructural syntheses of two MONTs. Through a combination of transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and selected area electron diffraction, we find that MONT crystallite sizes can be tuned while maintaining control over the relative dispersity without significantly altering the underlying crystal structure.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) with preserved or mildly reduced ejection fraction includes a heterogenous group of patients. Reclassification into distinct phenogroups to enable targeted interventions is a priority. This study aimed to identify distinct phenogroups, and compare phenogroup characteristics and outcomes, from electronic health record data. METHODS: 2,187 patients admitted to five UK hospitals with a diagnosis of HF and a left ventricular ejection fraction ≥ 40% were identified from the NIHR Health Informatics Collaborative database. Partition-based, model-based, and density-based machine learning clustering techniques were applied. Cox Proportional Hazards and Fine-Gray competing risks models were used to compare outcomes (all-cause mortality and hospitalisation for HF) across phenogroups. RESULTS: Three phenogroups were identified: (1) Younger, predominantly female patients with high prevalence of cardiometabolic and coronary disease; (2) More frail patients, with higher rates of lung disease and atrial fibrillation; (3) Patients characterised by systemic inflammation and high rates of diabetes and renal dysfunction. Survival profiles were distinct, with an increasing risk of all-cause mortality from phenogroups 1 to 3 (p < 0.001). Phenogroup membership significantly improved survival prediction compared to conventional factors. Phenogroups were not predictive of hospitalisation for HF. CONCLUSIONS: Applying unsupervised machine learning to routinely collected electronic health record data identified phenogroups with distinct clinical characteristics and unique survival profiles.

The effects of low-load squat jump and maximal isometric priming exercise on muscular performance and perceptual state. J Strength Cond Res 38(1): 1-9, 2024-The aim of this study was to examine responses at 3 and 27 hours after low-load jump squat (LL) and maximal isometric half-squat (ISO) priming stimuli. Fifteen resistance-trained males performed LL (4 × 3 at 20% 1 repetition maximum [1RM]), ISO (4 × 3 seconds), and control (CON) activities (standardized warm-up) in a randomized and counterbalanced order. Countermovement jump (CMJ) and isometric midthigh pull tests were conducted to assess performance changes after priming and CON activities. No clear changes in CMJ measures were found after priming activities compared with CON. However, small effect size improvements were found after priming stimuli completed on the same day. A 2.9% decrease in concentric phase duration (CI = 0.3-5.9, p = 0.333, Cliff's delta = -0.156) and a 9.1% increase in RSImod (CI = 0.2-12.3, p = 0.151, Cliff's delta = -0.218) occurred at 3 hours after LL compared with CON. Braking phase duration (CI = 0.8-10.6, p = 0.333, Cliff's delta = -0.213) was 2.9% shorter at 3 hours after ISO compared with CON. No clear changes in isometric peak force occurred after priming activities compared with CON. Additionally, questionnaires were completed to assess perceptual state and perceived effectiveness of the priming stimulus to influence performance. An increase in the "effect of activity" was perceived at 3 hours after LL and ISO (p = 0.013-0.044, Cliff's delta = 0.578-0.6) and at 27 hours after ISO (p = 0.99, Cliff's delta = 0.173) compared with CON. An increase in "muscular heaviness" was also reported at 3 hours after ISO compared with CON (p = 0.199, Cliff's delta = 0.320). The collective findings suggest limited benefits over the day after LL and ISO priming stimuli. However, as there was substantial variation in individual responses, the relative nature of priming responses should be considered when prescribing similar strategies in practical environments.

Effects of repeated jump testing and diurnal changes on subsequent countermovement jump and squat jump output and force-time characteristics. J Strength Cond Res 38(1): 174-179, 2024-The aim of this brief study was to investigate the effects of repeated jump testing on performance over 2 consecutive days while considering the possibility of diurnal changes. Fourteen male subjects and 14 recreationally active female subjects completed countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ) testing on 5 occasions (baseline [0,800], 5 minutes [0,820], 8 hours [1,600], 24 hours [0,800], and 32 hours [1,600]) over 32 hours. An additional rested baseline test was conducted on a separate day in the afternoon (1,600) to compare jump performance between morning and afternoon baseline values. Excluding small decreases in CMJ height at 24 hours (p = 0.292, Cliff's delta = -0.225) in male subjects and similar decreases in CMJ height at 5 minutes (p = 0.034, Cliff's delta = -0.245) in addition to SJ height:contraction time at 32 hours (p = 0.126, Cliff's delta = 0.153) in female subjects, findings generally showed no changes in jump performance over multiple assessments. Squat jump metrics may have showed small improvements between morning and afternoon baseline values in male subjects (SJ height:contraction time [p = 0.030, Cliff's delta = 0.225]) and female subjects (SJ height [p = 0.013, Cliff's delta = 0.173] and SJ height:contraction time [p = 0.091, Cliff's delta = 0.163)]. As jump performance was largely unaffected by repeated jump testing, the present findings support the use of monitoring practices and research designs that require multiple jump assessments within acute periods (∼32 hours).

Orange II (O-II), a water-soluble ionic azo dye, aggregates and eventually forms needle-like crystals at concentrations greater than 0.15 M. However, when equimolar amounts of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) are added to solutions containing O-II at 0.025 M or higher, the solution's appearance rapidly changes presenting a viscous, birefringent liquid, a lyotropic liquid crystalline solution. Birefringence is absent when viewing aqueous solutions of only O-II or γ-CD at concentrations greater than 0.03 M. Using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy, coupled with conductivity measurements, we postulate a structure for the basic "building block" of the self-assembly that eventually gives rise to a rodlike superstructure, leading to the formation of a lyotropic liquid crystalline phase.

RESUMO

Spontaneous retroperitoneal hematoma (SRH) is a rare complication of anticoagulation therapy. Presentation may vary from limb paresis to hypovolemic shock due to blood loss. The optimal treatment is controversial. It can be managed conservatively or surgically. We report a case of a 73-year-old man presenting with progressively worsening abdominal pain and severe pain radiating to his left lower limb twenty-five days after his pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) surgery. He was on anticoagulation per our institutional protocol for PEA patients. Investigations revealed a large, spontaneously occurring iliopsoas hematoma. Our patient was treated conservatively, and the SRH stabilised.

OBJECTIVES: Persons with intellectual disabilities frequently have podiatric conditions. Findings from the 2018 United States Summer games (USA) venues are compared to those from athletes screened at the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). METHODS: Data from Fit Feet screenings from 2445 United Arab Emirates (UAE) participants were compared to 1244 US participants. RESULTS: A sampling of results that reflect significant differences in findings between the USA cohort and Abu Dhabi cohort include ankle joint range of motion, excessive abduction, hallux abducto valgus and pes planus. The overall shoe to foot mismatch was found to be 52.2%. A professional referral was recommended 27.7% of the time in the USA data and 28.5% in the Abu Dhabi data. An urgent referral was requested 5.1% of the time for the USA data and 3.7% of the time in the Abu Dhabi data. CONCLUSION: Special Olympics athletes experience a greater prevalence of identifiable podiatric conditions as compared to the general population. Several of the conditions investigated in this study differed significantly between the international Special Olympics cohort and the USA cohort. Assessment of the feet of Special Olympics athletes can help to better appreciate the podiatric conditions in a population of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The variance identified between populations of Special Olympics athletes may be a reflection on the lack of standardization of conditions that are assessed for as well as the disparate characteristics of the clinical volunteers. Future Fit Feet events may wish to consider significant improvements in objectivity and standardization as it pertains to the conditions that are evaluated for in the Fit Feet exam.

Quantum light emitters (also known as single photon emitters) are known to be the heart of quantum information technologies. Irrespective of possessing ideal single photon emitter properties, quantum emitters in 2-D hBN defect structures, exhibit constrained quantum light emission within the 300-700 nm range. However, this emission range cannot fully satisfy the needs of an efficient quantum communication applications such as quantum key distribution (QKD), which demands the quantum light emission in fiber optic telecom wavelength bands (from 1260 to 1625 nm) and the free space optical (FSO) (UV-C-solar blind band-100 to 280 nm) wavelength ranges. Hence, there is a necessity to tune the quantum light emission into these two bands. However, the most promising technique to tune the quantum light emitters in hBN here, is still a matter of debate and till date there is no experimental and theoretical assurances. Hence, this work will focus on one of the most promising simple techniques known as Stark electrical tuning of the quantum light emission of hBN defect structures (NBVN, VB, CB, CBVN, CBCN, CBCNCBCN complex, and VBO2). These hBN defects are designed and sandwiched as metal/graphene/hBN defect structure/graphene/metal heterostructure and electrically tuned towards FSO and fiber optic bands (tuning range from UV-C to O-band IR region) region, using constrained DFT computations. The external electric field predicted to yield an atomic bond angle tilt associated with this point defect structure creates out-of-plane dipole moments, enabling the tuning of quantum emission. This electrical tuning technique leads to a simple passive photonic component which enables easier compatibility with quantum circuits and it is found to be one of the perfect alternative solutions, which does not require much external hardware setup to implement as compared to earlier published strain induced tuning experiments.

INTRODUCTION: Prehospital identification of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) in suspected stroke cases may enable the initiation of appropriate treatments and facilitate better-informed transport decisions. This scoping review aims to examine the literature to identify early clinical features and portable devices for the detection of ICH in the prehospital setting. METHODS: Three databases were searched via Ovid (MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL) from inception to August 2022 using prespecified search strategies. One reviewer screened all titles, abstracts and full-text articles for eligibility, while a second reviewer independently screened 20% of the literature during each screening stage. Data extracted were tabulated to summarise the key findings. RESULTS: A total of 6803 articles were screened for eligibility, of which 22 studies were included for analysis. Among them, 15 studies reported on early clinical features, while 7 considered portable devices. Associations between age, sex and comorbidities with the presence of ICH varied across studies. However, most studies reported that patients with ICH exhibited more severe neurological deficits (n=6) and higher blood pressure levels (n=11) at onset compared with other stroke and non-stroke diagnoses. Four technologies were identified for ICH detection: microwave imaging technology, volumetric impedance phase shift spectroscopy, transcranial ultrasound and electroencephalography. Microwave and ultrasound imaging techniques showed promise in distinguishing ICH from other diagnoses. CONCLUSION: This scoping review has identified potential clinical features for the identification of ICH in suspected stroke patients. However, the considerable heterogeneity among the included studies precludes meta-analysis of available data. Moreover, we have explored portable devices to enhance ICH identification. While these devices have shown promise in detecting ICH, further technological development is required to distinguish between stroke subtypes (ICH vs ischaemic stroke) and non-stroke diagnoses.

Several wild game meat species, including deer and feral pigs are hunted and consumed in Australia. Feral pigs and deer are not indigenous to Australia, but they have proliferated extensively and established their presence in every state and territory. Following the report of a sambar deer displaying Sarcocystis like white cysts in its rump muscles, the present study was conducted to explore the prevalence of Sarcocystis infections in wild deer and feral pigs in the southeastern regions of Australia. Oesophagus, diaphragm, and heart tissue from 90 deer and eight feral pigs were examined visually for sarcocysts. All results were negative. PCR testing of randomly selected deer and feral pigs yielded positive results, which were subsequently supported by histopathology. This is the first study to report the presence of Sarcocystis spp. in deer and feral pigs in Australia. As no visual cysts were found on the heart or oesophagus that came back positive with PCR, infected animals, particularly those reared free-range, could be passing through meat quality checks unidentified. If people consume this meat without cooking it properly, it may lead to a human infection of Sarcocystis. However, a more targeted study focused on determining the parasite's prevalence and assessing its risks is necessary to determine if it constitutes a food safety issue. As this species has been found not only in feral pigs but also in domestic pigs, the potential for infection spreading between feral pigs and pigs in free-range livestock systems is high, potentially posing a large problem for the Australian pork industry, particularly with the increased emphasis on free-range pig husbandry. Future studies should concentrate on determining the species of Sarcocystis in feral animals commonly consumed as game meat to determine potential zoonotic risks. This could also include a more in-depth look at the prevalence of Sarcocystis infections in other game animals. Identifying where these parasites are present and to what extent, are important areas for future studies.

Pulmonary arterial sarcomas (PAS) are rare aggressive tumours occurring mainly in the pulmonary trunk. We report a case of PAS involving the pulmonary trunk wall and valve, with uniform wall thickening which represents an atypical imaging manifestation of this tumour. A 63-year-old male presented with vague respiratory symptoms with rapid progression. CTPA showed low density filling defects in both pulmonary arteries and PET scan showed increased uptake in the pulmonary trunk, which along with raised ESR suggested Pulmonary Vasculitis. Echo imaging showed Right ventricular hypertrophy and pulmonary stenosis. Response to steroid therapy was minimal and his symptoms worsened. A referral for second opinion was made and he was diagnosed with PAS. He underwent Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy with Pulmonary valve replacement. Post-operative histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. PAS is rare and frequently misdiagnosed. Surgical resection is not curative, but together with chemotherapy can prolong survival.

A comprehensive computational study on the underlying reactivity of iron tetra-NHC complexes for C2 + N1 aziridination catalysis is presented. A library of 18 unique iron tetra-NHC complexes was constructed, and a computational screening was performed on the reaction barriers associated with the rate-determining step (formation of an open chain radical intermediate). Thermodynamic barriers were computed along with a variety of steric and electronic properties, including the percentage of buried volume, orbital energies and ETS-NOCV analysis, which were used to identify key characteristics related to reactivity. The analysis performed in this study successfully identified key differences in tetracarbenes, such as linking groups (BMe2 or CH2) and the identity of the NHC groups (imidazole, imidazoline or benzimidazole) in terms of sterics, electronics and thermodynamics. Additionally, we have proposed two reaction pathways based on electronic structure arguments for the formation of the key open-chain radical intermediate. The first reaction pathway proceeds through a σ-hole channel where the Fe(IV)-imide intermediate evolves into Fe(III)-imidyl radical through electron donation into the antibonding σ* orbital, while the second involves a Fe(III)-imidyl radical formed through a π-hole channel (donation into π*). These pathways are consistent with the isoelectronic iron(IV)-oxo species for hydrogen atom abstraction mechanisms and they can be used as descriptors of the rate-determining step of the aziridination reaction.

Accreditation of healthcare services provides quality assurance of hospital practice to support safe and effective care for patients. Accreditation programmes focused on antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) have been developed in high-income countries (HIC) and recently the WHO has developed a toolkit to support AMS practice in low and middle-income (LMIC) countries. BSAC has developed their Global Antimicrobial Stewardship Accreditation Scheme (GAMSAS) for hospitals based on globally applicable standards. GAMSAS aims to support healthcare organizations to build measurable AMS programmes and to support spread of best practice. GAMSAS involves a desktop assessment by BSAC experts followed by a hospital visit to gather further insight into how a hospital's AMS programme operates. A final report of compliance with the GAMSAS standards and a recommendation about accreditation at one of three levels is formally approved at a GAMSAS panel meeting involving well-established global experts in AMS. The BSAC GAMSAS team reflect on progress during the first year and ambitions for future spread.

As stewards of public and environmental health, mosquito control agencies are rightfully concerned about impacts on nontarget organisms. This study examined the impact of a modern, pyrethroid based ground adulticide program using ultra-low volume applications in a metropolitan county in central Florida. Nontarget insects and mosquitoes were collected in a before-after control-impact design at 21 sites over 1.5 years. While mosquitoes were reduced, we found no evidence for reduction of nontarget insects, regardless of taxon. Night-flying Lepidoptera may experience greater risk than other nontarget taxa, but overall effects of adulticide missions on this group were low and inconsistent. Instead, meteorology, habitat, and phenology dominate patterns of nontarget abundance. Mosquito reduction was more clearly observed and corrected post-mission reduction was consistent with results expected in complex urban and suburban treatment zones.

Reference conditions are difficult to find in the Anthropocene but essential for effective biodiversity conservation. Aquatic ecosystems in the Andes-Amazon transition zone of Colombia are now at high risk due to expanded human activities after peace agreements in 2016 ended armed conflict because lands formerly controlled by FARC and other armed groups are now prone to agricultural and urban expansion. Particularly, expanding human land use may reduce fish diversity across the altitudinal gradient, especially in the premontane streams (i.e., <500 m a.s.l.) because lands are more amenable to human use than at greater altitudes. We evaluated fish α-diversity (measured as species richness, total abundance, and effective species number) and ß-diversity (spatial and temporal) in 12 sites over 8 years bracketing the end of armed conflict. All α-diversity and ß-diversity analyses were evaluated relative to categorical altitude (< or >500 m) and continuous altitude. Strong differences in fish community structure among sites occurred as a function of altitude. Fish communities exhibit altitudinal biodiversity gradients that are consistent in space and time, and that need to be accounted for conservation and management considerations. Our results provide a reference to identify short- and long-term changes due to impending human land use at a critical moment for the conservation of tropical fish diversity. Similar studies in other areas of the upper Amazon Basin are needed to evaluate effects of subsequent human activities on diversity patterns and our study area to compare to reference conditions reported here.
