RESUMO

Low-cost airlines have embraced diverse business models, yielding varying degrees of success. In our study, we apply a configurational approach that allows us to evaluate business models not as isolated components but as intricate business configurations. Through this lens, we identify two distinct models that successful low-cost airlines adopt: the pure low-cost model and the hybrid model. Each model has its own specific, often contradictory, attributes. Most significantly, our findings indicate that low-cost airlines must choose between offering a broad spectrum of additional services or focusing on high productivity and on-time performance. Our analyses reveal that low-cost airlines cannot sidestep this trade-off, as a simultaneous offering of both models does not lead to success.

RESUMO

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to vaccination, health authorities have strongly advocated the wearing of face masks as a crucial measure in combating the virus. Nevertheless, the recommendation or legal requirement to wear a face mask is no guarantee of adherence to the rules. A person's decision to wear a mask may also be based on their beliefs and is likely to be influenced by their observation of the mask-wearing behavior of other people. This study aims to explore the role of conformity on the wearing of masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that there is little evidence on how the mask-wearing behavior of others and demographic factors affect people's decisions to wear face masks in public settings, we performed a large-scale observational study in the Czech Republic during a period of rapidly increasing COVID-19 related cases and deaths. We observed a total of 1753 customers and 472 employees in 67 highly frequented shopping venues. The data were collected by trained observers and analyzed using multilevel logistic regression modeling. The results indicate that the mask-wearing behavior of new customers was influenced by the proportion of other customers wearing masks and the behavior differed according to the demographics of age and sex. A notable finding was that the greater the presence of customers wearing masks in a store, the lower the propensity of new visitors to wear masks. Which may be evidence of problematic free-riding behavior. These findings therefore have policy implications and can aid the formulation of specific (communication) strategies to promote mask-wearing behavior.

RESUMO

A total of 88 samples of laryngeal lesions (23 vocal cord nodules (VCNs), 23 papillomas (PAs), 18 dysplasias (DYs), and 24 carcinomas (CAs)) were analyzed for p16INK4a protein (p16) expression by immunohistochemistry and for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection using chromogene in situ hybridization (CISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The series comprised 62 males and 26 females, aged 1-87 years (median 55 years). p16 expression was detected in 2 of 23 (9%) VCNs, 18 of 23 (78%) PAs, 9 of 18 (50%) DYs, and 14 of 24 (58%) CAs. Using CISH, HR-HPV DNA was detected in 3 of 23 (13%) VCNs, in 19 of 23 (83%) PAs, in 12 of 18 (67%) DYs, and in 14 of 24 (58%) CAs. HR-HPV DNA was found in six of nine (67%) PAs by PCR. A statistically significant difference in p16 expression and HR-HPV DNA presence detected by CISH was observed between VCNs and PAs (p<0.000001). The sensitivity and specificity of p16 expression for HR-HPV DNA presence detected by CISH was 0.612 and 0.773, respectively. Our study confirms a potential role of HR-HPV infection not only in the pathogenesis of malignant, but also in benign laryngeal lesions.
