RESUMO

Quantum defects in diamonds have been studied as a promising resource for quantum science. The subtractive fabrication process for improving photon collection efficiency often require excessive milling time that can adversely affect the fabrication accuracy. We designed and fabricated a Fresnel-type solid immersion lens using the focused ion beam. For a 5.8 µm-deep Nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) center, the milling time was highly reduced (1/3 compared to a hemispherical structure), while retaining high photon collection efficiency (> 2.24 compared to a flat surface). In numerical simulation, this benefit of the proposed structure is expected for a wide range of milling depths.

RESUMO

The commercialization of quantum key distribution (QKD), which enables secure communication even in the era of quantum computers, has acquired significant interest. In particular, plug-and-play (PnP) QKD has garnered considerable attention owing to its advantage in system stabilization. However, a PnP QKD system has limitations on miniaturization owing to a bulky storage line (SL) of tens of kilometers. And, the secure key rate is relatively low because Bob transmits the signal pulses only at the dedicated time slots to circumvent backscattering noise. This study proposes a new method that can eliminate the SL by realizing an optical pulse train generator based on an optical cavity structure. Our method allows Alice to generate optical pulse trains herself by duplicating Bob's seed pulse and excludes the need for Bob's strong signal pulses that trigger backscattering noise as much as the conventional PnP QKD. Accordingly, our method can naturally overcome the miniaturization limitation and the slow secure key rate, as the storage line is no longer necessary. We conducted a proof-of-concept experiment using our method and achieved a key generation rate of 1.6×10-3 count/pulse and quantum bit error rate ≤ 5%.

Thermal radiation transfer between two objects separated by a subwavelength gap (near-field thermal radiation transfer) can be orders of magnitude larger than that in free space, which is attracting increasing attention with respect to both fundamental nanoscience and its potential for high-power-density and high-efficiency conversion of heat to electricity in thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems. However, the realization of near-field thermal radiation transfer in TPV systems involves significant challenges because it requires a subwavelength gap and large temperature difference between the emitter and the PV cell while minimizing the heat transfer that does not contribute to the photocurrent generation. To overcome these challenges, here we demonstrate a one-chip near-field TPV device consisting of a thin-film Si emitter and InGaAs PV cell with an intermediate Si substrate, which enables the suppression of the heat transfer due to sub-bandgap radiation by free carriers and surface modes. Through the one-chip integration and thermal isolation using Si process technologies, we realize a deep subwavelength gap (<150 nm) between the emitter and the intermediate substrate without using any external positioners while maintaining a large temperature difference (>700 K). Compared to the equivalent device operating in the far-field regime, we achieve 10-fold enhancement of the photocurrent in the PV cell without degrading the open-circuit voltage and fill factor, demonstrating the potential of our one-chip device for the future applications of near-field thermal radiation transfer.

In order to enhance second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency in a waveguide-coupled photonic nanocavity, we introduce a reflector at the edge of the waveguide and investigate its influence on input power and SHG efficiency. SHG efficiency and critical input power of the reflective waveguide-coupled cavity are controlled by the reflection amplitude and phase delay of the reflector. At input powers considerably lower than the critical power, SHG efficiency increases by up to three orders of magnitude higher than the case without reflector. Moreover, SHG efficiency of 100% at critical input power, which is twice that of the previous result, can be achieved over a wide phase range. These results prove the feasibility and controllability of highly efficient nonlinear optical devices.

INTRODUCTION: A proper cavernous endothelial cell culture system would be advantageous for the study of the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in endothelial dysfunction and erectile dysfunction (ED). AIM: To establish a nonenzymatic technique, which we termed the "Matrigel-based sprouting endothelial cell culture system," for the isolation of mouse cavernous endothelial cells (MCECs) and an in vitro model that mimics in vivo situation for diabetes-induced ED. METHODS: For primary MCEC culture, mouse cavernous tissue was implanted into Matrigel and sprouting cells from the tissue were subcultivated. To establish an in vitro model for diabetes-induced ED, the primary cultured MCECs were exposed to a normal-glucose (5 mmoL) or a high-glucose (30 mmoL) condition for 48 hours. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The purity of isolated cells was determined by fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis. MCECs incubated under the normal- or the high-glucose condition were used for Western blot, cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) quantification, and in vitro angiogenesis assay. RESULTS: We could consistently isolate high-purity MCECs (about 97%) with the Matrigel-based sprouting endothelial cell culture system. MCECs were subcultured up to the fifth passage and no significant changes were noted in endothelial cell morphology or purity. The phosphorylation of Akt and eNOS and the cGMP concentration were significantly lower in MCECs exposed to high glucose than in those exposed to normal glucose. MCECs exposed to the normal-glucose condition formed well-organized capillary-like structures, whereas derangements in tube formation were noted in MCECs exposed to high glucose. The protein expression of transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) and phospho-Smad2 was significantly increased by exposure to high glucose. CONCLUSION: The Matrigel-based sprouting endothelial cell culture system is a simple, technically feasible, and reproducible technique for isolating pure cavernous endothelial cells in mice. An in vitro model for diabetic ED will be a valuable tool for evaluating the angiogenic potential of novel endogenous or synthetic modulators.

This study aimed to investigate the short-term postoperative outcomes of reduced-port laparoscopic distal gastrectomy and demonstrate its safety and feasibility in overweight and obese patients with gastric cancer. The medical records of 211 patients who underwent reduced-port laparoscopic distal gastrectomy, between August 2014 and April 2020, were reviewed. After propensity score matching, they were divided into a non-overweight group (n = 68) and overweight group (n = 68). Operative details and short-term surgical outcomes were compared between two groups. Reduced-port laparoscopic distal gastrectomy in overweight group showed statistically longer operation time (200.59 vs. 208.68 min, p = 0.044), higher estimated bleeding volume (40.96 vs. 58.01 mL, p = 0.001), and lesser number of harvested lymph nodes (36.81 vs. 32.13, p = 0.039). However, no significant differences were found in hospital course and other surgical outcomes. There was no mortality in either group, and the postoperative morbidity rate was not significantly different (14.7% vs. 16.2%). In the subgroup analysis, overweight and obesity did not significantly affect postoperative complication rates (16.2% vs. 16.2%, p = 1). We demonstrated comparable short-term surgical outcomes of reduced-port laparoscopic distal gastrectomy between the two groups (p = 0.412~1). Reduced-port laparoscopic distal gastrectomy was safe in overweight and obese patients with gastric cancer.

The human body has a symmetric structure and maintains a physiological balance through the harmony of yin and yang. One of the fundamental principles of acupuncture is that unbalanced or abnormal bioenergetic conditions on the left and right meridians may be restored to a balanced, normal condition by acupuncture therapy. In this study, the electrical potential along the stomach meridian was measured to investigate the bioenergy consensus between the operator and subject during acupuncture stimulation, and the acupuncture response on opposite meridians was investigated by comparing the electric potential on the left and right stomach meridian during stimulation of the left side stomach meridian-36. When meridian electrical potential was simultaneously measured in both the operator and subject, opposite polarities were observed, which might indicate the transfer of bioenergy between operator and subject. In addition, the meridian electrical potentials of the subjects' left and right stomach meridians were also always of opposite polarity and presented three different signal patterns, which might have represented the condition of the associated meridian.
